Construction of the Cerro Colorado on-off leach pad in northern Chile required about 3 Mm2 (32.3 million sq ft) of fill over an area of about 600,000 m2 (6.5 million sq ft) in irregular terrain with relief of up to 40 m (130 ft). Earthwork construction was completed in about six months using mine waste, placed in 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) lifts with mine haul trucks. The lift thickness was reduced and the compactive effort increased in the upper 10 m (33 ft). This was done to develop a mat for additional resistance to possible differential settlements due to the modest density of the fill and dynamic (earthquake) conditions. A single 2-mm (80-mil) high-density polyethylene (HDPE) liner was used below the leach pads. This was protected from the loading and unloading equipment by bedding and cover systems. It consisted of screened sand, gravel and silt as the bedding and cover layers and a heel of screened gravel and primary crushed low-grade ore.

"In order to sustain the operations in chromite processing plants, due to concentrate selling cost, plants are in need of optimization in terms of capacity and recovery increase. In this study, DAMA Engineering carried out a methodological study for the purpose after a detailed sampling campaign in a plant which is situated in one the main chromite zones in Turkey; 1 The current status of the plant was investigated quantitatively with the bottlenecks, Plant overall efficiency in terms of recovery, Efficiencies of the particular equipment (mill, screen, gravity circuit), 2 A new circuit was proposed with the available equipment, 3 The new circuit that is product of modeling and experimental effort, was evaluated quantitatively as if it is a running plant, After 4-5 months continuous effort, the capacity of the plant was almost doubled (37 tph to 70 tph) and the plant overall recovery was increased from 48% to 63% by grinding adjustments and additional shaking tables theoretically. It was shown that the plant may move into profit with the minimum amount investment using readily available system. INTRODUCTION TO THE CURRENT PLANT The objective of the study is to increase the capacity and recovery of the chromite plant owned by Kurmel Group, Akmetal Inc. The complete study is given elsewhere (DAMA, 2016). The plant is situated in one of the main chromite zones in Turkey; Aladag. The current capacity of the plant is around 35 tph and the overall recovery declared by plant engineer is around 47 %. The chromite plant mainly has 3 units; crushing, grinding and gravitational circuits. The crushing circuit has 3 stages; a jaw crusher, a secondary cone crusher and a tertiary cone crusher operating in closed circuit with a vibrating screen with the aperture size of 15mm. In grinding circuit, a rod mill (2.44 6m x 3.6) and a ball mill (2.13 x 2.3m) are used for primary and secondary grinding, respectively. Derrick screens are used for the size separation. Additionally, for the size classification of the system, hydrosizers are used and each size fraction is sent to the shaking table sets. The middling product of the tables is subjected to re-grinding with a ball mill with the dimensions of 2.1 x 2.9 m. The capacity and the recovery are affected by several bottle necks; hydrosizers’ pure classification, primary/secondary mill power vs capacity problems, re-grinding product’s high slime content and so on. These combined factors made the plant to run in low recovery and capacity. Hence, DAMA was asked to make a study to investigate current status of the plant and propose a new solution to increase capacity and recovery of the plant. The conceptual flowsheet of the circuit is given in Figure 1 below."

The Jordan Phosphate Mines Company is one of the world's major phosphate rock and phosphatic fertilizers producers (the second largest phosphate rock exporter), with ore reserves exceeding 2 billion tonnes, mainly located in the Eshidiya area. The Eshidiya phosphate deposits, 120 km north-east of Aqaba, are of sedimentary origin (as are all phosphate ore in Jordan). Three exploitable beds (Al, A2, and A3) with variable content of P205, CaO, SiO2, etc., are processed in order to produce 68-70,73-75, and 75-77% TCP grades. The A3 bed, which is characterized as the most siliceous containing 40-48% TCP, requires physical beneficiation using wet scrubbing, screening, and desliming by hydrocylone, followed by anionic conventional flotation to achieve 75- 77% TCP grade. For the last 15 years extensive laboratory and pilot tests (including physical, chemical, and mineralogical studies) were carried out. After operating the industrial plant, certain modifications were deemed necessary to adjust the operational parameters and the final flowsheet, which was followed to obtain the targeted quantity and quality of concentrate.

This paper describes a new approach for examining the kinetics and mechanism of zinc dissolution from sphalerite concentrate in acidic ferric sulfate solution in the presence of manganese dioxide. A literature search was performed to access the possible action of the two oxidizing agents, i.e., ferric ion and manganese dioxide. The possibility of galvanic coupling between ZnS and MnO2 and the cyclic action of the redox couple, Fe2+/Fe3+, on these two minerals were theoretically examined based on corrosion principles. Expressions for the mixed potential (Em) and the mixed current (im) were derived for the relevant corrosion and galvanic couples. Leaching experiments were conducted to establish which of the above phenomena is operative during leaching. The results indicated that the dissolution mostly occurs by the action of ferric ion on ins producing ferrous ions. The presence of MnO2 enables a quick conversion of ferrous to ferric, which maintains the rate of in dissolution. The process has promising features for commercial exploitation.

ABSTRACT Lateritic bauxite deposits of economic size and grade in Sierra Leone occur on granulites of the Kasila series. The high grade trihydrate ores of Mokanji are exploited by SIEROMCO since 1964. Remaining reserves are small (2 million tons) and operation moved over to the Gondama deposits of similar grade. Port Loko bauxite reserves are estimated at 100 million tons and are of relatively lower grade. It is planned to treat this ore locally into alumina. Guinea's bauxite reserves exceed those of any other nation. They occur as hard lateritic bauxite covers on plateaus of the Pre-Cambrian sedimentary formations and on doleritic intrusions. The genesis is still controversial. The Sangaredi mine has produced high grade ore for the last 10 years. Friguia exploits a relatively lower grade ore at a rate of about 2 million tpy to be treated in their local alumina plant. Kindia ore is mined at a yearly rate of 2,5 million tons since 1974. Untouched reserves at Ayékoyé and Tougué/Dabola are estimated at 6,000 million tons.

"The chemical treatment of mine-influenced waters is a longstanding environmental challenge for many coal operators, particularly in Central Appalachia. Mining conditions in this region present several unique obstacles to meeting NPDES effluent limits. Outlets are often located in remote areas with challenging terrain where conditions do not facilitate the implementation of large-scale commercial treatment systems. Furthermore, maintenance of these systems is often laborious, expensive, and time consuming. Many large mining complexes discharge water from numerous outlets, while using environmental technicians to assess the water quality and treatment regime multiple times per day. As an alternative solution, this paper describes the ongoing research and development of automated chemical treatment systems for mine water discharges. The current work explains the development of a bench-scale prototype that has been used to evaluate various monitoring, notification, and control strategies. Results from this testing are compared to present day practices to show the costs and benefits of implementing an automated treatment and monitoring program. INTRODUCTION Background The National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), per Section 402 of the Clean Water Act, requires permitting of all point source discharges from coal mines. This program dictates that all water leaving a permitted boundary, whether it be process water or storm water, must leave through a monitored NPDES outlet. These permitted NPDES discharge points, also denoted outlets, outfalls or monitoring points, must meet a rigorous set of effluent limits to maintain compliance. Common effluent limits monitored by coal companies include but are not limited to iron, manganese, aluminum, total suspended solids (TSS), and pH. Raw mine water is often deficient in meeting these effluent limits, and as a result, various treatment processes are required to bring the water into compliance prior to environmental release. Depending on the mining and geologic conditions, water monitoring and treatment programs can constitute a significant operating cost for the mine operator. In Appalachia, acid mine drainage (AMD) constitutes one of the most significant and widespread water quality challenges that must be treated per NPDES guidelines. AMD is a general lowering of water pH that occurs when water and sulfide minerals interact within oxidizing conditions in coal and metal mining. Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) is a similar term that applies more generally to non-mining causes such as highway construction and other large-scale excavations. Today, mine influenced waters (MIW) is becoming more popular as the general term referring to all types of mining-induced water issues. AMD has been researched substantially over the last 30 years, with investigators studying various causal mechanisms and treatment strategies (e.g. Gazea, 1996; Ziemkiewicz, 1998; Skousen, 2000; Kleinmann, 2001; Johnson, 2003; Akcil, 2006; Kalin, 2006). This research has produced several pragmatic results, which provide numerous methods to predict, prevent, and treat AMD."

Estimated reserves of high-grade iron ore at Serra dos Carajás total 16 billion metric tons and have an average grade of 66.7 percent iron, 2.2 percent combined silica and alumina, and 0.05 percent phosphorous on a dry basis. Hematite is predominant and no significant sulfur or other deleterious elements are present. Figure 1 illustrates the comparative magnitude of the Carajás reserves. Serra dos Carajás is located in northern Brazil, about 550 kilometers southwest of Belém, Pará. It is six degrees south of the equator between the Xingu and Tocantins Rivers. Both rivers flow northward toward the Amazon River. The greater part of the area is covered by thick jungle, and the most practical means of access is by air. Figures 2 and 3 show the location of Serra dos Carajás. Figure 4 shows the distribution of the major iron-ore deposits.

Gypsum (CaSO4-2H2O) is an abundant and naturally occurring mineral. Under elevated temperatures (250 to 300°F) gypsum loses its crystalline water and is converted to hemihydrate (CaSO4 -0.5H2O). The hemihydrate form is also called plaster that is widely used in wall- board, joint compound, and many other industrial applications. At temperatures higher than 450°F (up to 1,200°F), gypsum loses all crystalline water and is converted to anhydrite form (CaSO4). The loss of crystalline water at elevated temperatures is an endothermic reaction. This property makes gypsum an attractive filler and fire retardant in certain thermosetting plastics. The applications of gypsum in plastics, food, pharmaceutical, and paper coatings will be reviewed in this paper. The future of synthetic gypsum, a by product of various industrial processes, will also be discussed.

The US Bureau of Mines has funded several research and development projects in computerized mine monitoring and control. Hardware and software components have been sufficiently developed so that mine operators have been provided with an efficient means to comply with federal regulations and increase mine safety. Several cost benefits have been realized as well, particularly with increased conveyor belt haulage availability. Western Fuels-Utah Inc. approached the Bureau to assist in planning, installing, and evaluating a computerized mine monitoring and control system because of the agency's research experience in this area. The installation was planned for Western Fuel's Deserado mine, located in Rangely, CO. Since a large, complex, underground mine producing about 2.4 Mt/a (2.7 million stpy) of coal was projected, the company anticipated significant benefits in safety and efficiency through a computerized monitoring and control system. A major part of the cooperative program was to document and evaluate the system design, installation, and operation. This will assist others to adequately design, specify, install, and operate future systems. Mine description The Deserado mine plan and layout have important impacts on the monitoring system requirements. Long range plans are to produce 2.4 Mt (2.7 million st) of clean coal annually from two longwall sections and four continuous sections. Presently, two continuous miner sections operate under 213 m (700 ft) of overburden in the 2.3 to 2.5 m (7.5 to 8.5 ft) thick D seam to develop main, submain, and panel entries have developed for a longwall. These began operation in December 1986. Belt conveyors haul the coal from the mining sections to a 1.4-m (54-in.) belt located in the upper compartment of the slope. The lower compartment contains a hoist for men and material transport. From the slope, the coal moves to two 9 kt (10,000 st) raw coal storage silos, then to a 680-t/h (750-stph) preparation plant. After cleaning, a 5.5-km (3.5-mile) overland conveyor carries the coal to a clean coal slot storage and rail load-out facility. An electric locomotive then transports the coal to the Bonanza Power Plant in Utah. Allen-Bradley monitoring and control hardware and software controls the preparation plant, with two PLC-3 programmable controllers and a Process Control Industries D-1200 color graphics interface. The system operator uses three "smart" color video display units and an alarm printer for hard copy records. Originally, it also monitored and controlled the conveyors from the bottom of the slope to the top of the raw coal silos, the preparation plant, the overland conveyors, the main mine ventilation fan, and the hoist. Some of these features, though, were later transferred to the mine system.

On April 21, 1980 the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union (OCAW) submitted a petition urging the revision of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure limit to radon daughters in underground mines. This petition asks for: 1. Annual worker exposure to be lowered from the current 4 WLM/year to 0.7 WLM/year; 2. Full economic protection for workers whose exposure exceeds the proposed 0.7 WLM/ year; and 3. The primary means of lowering workers' radiation exposures shall be environmental controls. I will present the scientific rationale for the lower standard requested in our petition to the Department of Labor. [1. Radiation Exposures to Uranium Miners] Two types of radiation exposures are present in the environment of uranium mines: A. [External Exposure] to gamma sources which until 1978 was considered as negligible compared with internal alpha radiation. R. E. Utting (1), in an investigation of three Canadian uranium mines, found levels of exposures adding to an annual dose equivalent of 3 rems (30 mSv)/year. He concluded that gamma dosages may be a major fraction of the maximum permissible dose for many individual miners. The U.S. experience has shown that there is significant gamma exposure in U.S. uranium mines and, therefore, it could contribute to the total radiation exposure to the lungs in combination with internal alpha radiation. Before ventilation improvements in uranium mines, the contribution of external radiation to total lung dosage was relatively small. After improvements in ventilation, the reduction in internal radiation exposure appears to be in 1980 as low as 1/10 of the 1950 dosages. However, ventilation improvements do not affect external gamma radiation. Gamma radiation remains at the same 1950's level, and it represents today a higher proportion of the total radiation burden to the miner's lungs. MSHA regulations (57.5-47) state that if gamma exposure is below 2.0 milliroentgens per hour, then workers are not required to wear gamma dosimeters and cummulative gamma radiation records need not be kept. Assuming an exposure of 1.9 milliroentgens per hour per 173 hours/month for 12 months,a miner would accumulate a dose from external radiation of 3.9 rems/ year. This dosage would, of course, go unrecorded. MSHA, therefore, should consider a downward revision of the external radiation permissible exposure limit of 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. MSHA should make clear that this exposure level, when added to the internal exposure, does not make for sound health physics -even though the measured current levels do not approach 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. B. [Internal Exposure] to alpha radiation is still the larger contributor to lung irradiation in uranium miners. The target organ is still the lung. The parameters to be considered in determining the biological radiation load appear in Table I for radon daughters present in the upper respiratory tract (URT). Introduction Gold mining on an industrial scale is becoming increasingly dependent on low-grade refractory sulfide ores that contain large amounts of pyrite (FeS2) and arsenopyrite (FeAsS). Gold is usually present as sub-microscopic particles dispersed evenly throughout the sulfide matrix. Without some form of preoxidation, efficient recovery of this finely disseminated gold through cyanide leaching is hampered because the surface of the sulfide particle becomes passivated and impervious to penetration of the cyanide. Traditional methods for recovery of refractory gold from arsenopyrite ores include roasting and autoclave leaching. A modem alternative method is to preoxidize the mineral using the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans prior to attempting to re- cover the gold through cyanidation. The bioleaching of arsenopyrite ores presents a problem in the mobilization of large quantities of arsenic, present both in the +5 and +3 ionic states. Dissolved arsenic species pose a dual problem: they are -1 to the bioleaching process itself through inhibition of bacterial activity, and they also pose an environmental threat. The arsenate anion (AsO2) has been shown to be more toxic to living organisms, including Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, than the arsenate anion (AsO43) (Collinet and Morin, 1989). There is some disagreement as to the fate of arsenite in bioleaching solution. Mandl, Matulova, and Docekalova (1992) reported that dissolved arsenite concentration was constant during a long-term bioleaching study of chalcopyrite using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Torma and Oolman (1992) report that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been found capable of oxidizing As3+ to As5+. The solid products of arsenopyrite/pyrite bioleaching include jarosite (MFe3(SO4)2(OH)6 where M can be K+, Na+, NH4+ or H3O+), scorodite (FeAsO4.2H2O), ferric hydroxides, and ferric hydroxysufites (Carlson et. al., 1992; Van Breemen, 1982; Lazaroff et. al., 1982). The particular species formed is a function mainly of pH. Little study has been performed on the effect of solid products on bioleaching. Pesic and Kim (1993) showed that Thiobacillus ferrooridans cells served as a nucleation sites for jarosite particles, which grew rapidly and eventually killed the cell. Most bioleaching studies are performed at low pH&apos;s (<2.0) under uncontrolled conditions. By studying bioleaching of arsenopyrite under controlled pH conditions and at higher pH&apos;s (2.0 to 3.0), the distribution of iron and arsenic between the solid and liquid phases can be controlled, and their effects studied. The objective is to develop a bioleaching process that operates at high efficiency while keeping amounts of dissolved heavy metals low. Pesic, Stohok, and Torma (1993) demonstrated the usefulness of this approach in the leaching of cobaltite (CoAsS) concentrates. Materials and Methods The focus of this study was the bioleaching of arsenopyrite ore by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The parameters studied included the effects of pH, and the effects of arsenate (AsO43 and arsenite (AsO2). pH studies included pH set initially but not controlled, and pH controlled continuously with NaOH or LiOH. Bioleaching results from two strains of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans with different adaptation histories were compared. Bioleaching experiments were conducted in 150 ml stirred glass reactors using a strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans adapted to arsenopyrite ore, supplied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. These bioreactors were innoculated with stock cells grown on arsenopyrite ore for 14-16 days. Typical elemental breakdown for this ore was: As, 9.90%; Fe, 18.60%, Stot, 9.26%; Suifide, 7.50%; SiO2, 25.90%. Mineralogically, the ore contained both arsenopyrite and pyrite. Bioleaching efficiency was measured by withdrawing bioleach solution samples at selected intervals, filtering, and measuring the amount of dissolved cobalt, iron, and arsenic by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Because the precipitation of iron and arsenic at higher pH&apos;s would lead to unreliable results, a 100 mg tracer of cobaltite concentrate from the Blackbird mine in southern Idaho was added to solution. Dissolution of the cobaltite tracer was used to indicate bioleaching of the bulk arsenopyrite ore. "Taking the long flame coal, gas-fat coal and anthracite as samples, we tested the adsorption quantity to single component gas of N2, CO2 and CH4 under atmospheric pressure phase at different temperatures. Then we analyzed the adsorption characteristics and models of different metamorphic coals. The results show that metamorphic grade, temperature and gases species are main factors to adsorption quantity of coal. The higher and lower metamorphic grade of coal have greatly influence on adsorption capacity while moderate grade of coal has opposite result. The coal adsorption amount to three single component gases under the same experimental condition is CO2> CH4> N2.The simulation precision order of four adsorption models is quadratic curve model > Freundlich isotherm model> Langmuir model >logarithmic curve model. Quadratic curve model and Freundlich isotherm model both can accurately describe the adsorption behaviors of N2 and CH4, different isothermal adsorption curve of CO2 needs two kinds or more models to describe. This has a reference value to the study of adsorption characteristics and models to single component gases.INTRODUCTION Adsorption is the interfacial phenomena that concentration of single or multiple components in the interface layer is different from the bulk phase (1964). Adsorption model is mathematical models to describe the adsorption characteristics of the adsorbent, mainly reflected to fitting effect of gas adsorption isotherm, which contribute to deeply understand the adsorption characteristics of adsorbent. Many scholars have carried out extensively experimental studies of the coal adsorption process from different angles. Zhao (2010) studied the influence of coal metamorphism to pore development of coal seam through a variety of experimental methods. Zhang (2006) analyzed the adsorption capacity and the controlling factors from three aspects of the coal rank, maceral and coal mass deformation. Cheng et al., (2002) studied the influence of pore size distribution of different rank coals to adsorption constants. Zhong (2002) carried out varieties of isothermal assay and established the prediction method of coal seam adsorption affected by a variety of conditions. R. M. Bustin (1998) proposed that we could not simply describe the change law of coal adsorption capacity and maceral content by a fixed parameter, and the adsorption capacity of the same coal rank also has great change. C. R. Clarkson et al., (1997) used four different adsorption models to describe the coal methane adsorption process, and the fitting precision of adsorption models is D-A equation >D-R equation > BET equation> Langmuir equation. Gasem, K et al., (2003) found that the fitted isothermal adsorption curve of D-A equation and BET equation are better than Langmuir equation under high pressure condition, while D-R equation and BET model are better to CO2 adsorption. In recent years, scholars’ at home and abroad research achievements of coal adsorption focused on high-pressure stage (about 0~15 MPa), mainly for coalbed methane exploitation, carbon dioxide trapping and sealing technology development, but the study of coal adsorption under atmospheric pressure phase is little. "GENERAL PROJECT DATAThe Sparvo Tunnel is part of the “Variante di Valico” project, a new 65km (40mi) highway link between Bologna and Florence, designed to renew the existing A1 route which connects Bologna and Florence. It is composed of 2 x 2,5km (1,55mi) twin tunnels excavated inside a complex geological context, characterized by the presence of a series of surface landslides and methane gas.The inclination is 2,6 % and the minimum radius is 1.400m (4.600ft). The two tunnel tubes were excavated by a 15,6m (51ft) diameter EPB-TBM from summer 2011 to summer 2013. The internal diameter of the concrete lining is 13,6m (44,5ft), made up of precast concrete segments 2m (6,5ft) long and 70cm (28”) thick, being the largest and heaviest segments ever produced. Excavation went smooth apart from initial problems concerning clogging problems and a main bearing damage of the TBM, which are discussed in a further paper during the congress. No structural damage was observed until the end of the TBM drives.SITE OBSERVATIONS DURING THE POST-EXCAVATION PHASEThe first evidence of the stress state of the segmental lining appeared on November 20, 2013 inside the northern tube (1st drive). Ring No. 884 showed obvious signs of overstress, resulting in spalling and crushing of the concrete, and the subsequent bending of the reinforcement, as visible in figure 1.At this time the tunnel invert was already partially backfilled, and construction traffic was running through the tunnel. First safety measures included closing of the tunnel, and initial measurements of the displacements."

The Bagdad mill, built in 1977, was de-signed for a mill capacity of 36,300 tpd. An ABC (Autogenous Mill-Ball Mill-Crusher) grinding circuit was chosen. The original mill contained three completely independent grinding circuits, each containing one 9.75 m diameter by 3.96 m long fixed speed autogenous mill, one 4.72 m diameter by 6.71 m long ball mill and one 2.13 m diameter short-head cone crusher. Total installed power per grinding circuit was 8,464 kw with 5,966 kw in the autogenous mill, 2,237 kw in the ball mill and 261 kw in the crusher. (See FIGURE I--Major Equipment Flow Diagram.) The autogenous mills were designed to be able to operate semi-autogenously but were never converted to SAG. As a result of this design, only about 4,100 kw of the designed power is utilized in the autogenous mills. The grinding circuits are closed with 2.44 m by 6.10 m double deck vibrating screens. Screen oversize is returned, by a series of conveyors, underneath the mill coarse ore stockpile to feed the crushers. Variable speed belts feed the crushers and control power draw. Crusher product reports directly to the tail end of the autogenous mill feed belt. (See FIGURE 2--Typical Crusher Feed and Product Size Distributions.) Tramp iron in the autogenous mill-crusher circuit is handled in a unique way. A magnetic sensor detects the metal. This closes a gate which directs the crusher feed onto a separate belt which bypasses the crusher and returns the material to the autogenous mill feed belt.

Hibernia de Mexico SA de CV, based in Durango, Durango, Mexico built and put into operation a 700-t/d (770-stpd) agitated cyanide leach plant in Guanacevi, Durango. Plant construction began in March 1993 and operations began in November 1993. Hibernia de Mexico, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hibernia Holdings, Inc., is a privately held Tucson, AZ-based company. The startup procedures described here deal with Mexico&apos;s legal, import-export and finance requirements, and labor and security requirements. The 700 t/d (770 stpd) Guanacevi project is located next to the town of Guanacevi. The project is an agitated cyanide leach plant built to process about 2 Mt (2.2 million st) of flotation tailings over its life. The plant is operated by Servicios de Guanacevi, Asociasion en Participacion. It is owned jointly by Hibernia de Mexico and Metalurgica Guanacevi SA de CV. Legal, importation of equipment and financing For a foreign company to operate in the mining industry in Mexico, it must form a Mexican company. A Mexican company presently must be at least 51 % owned by a Mexican entity. The other 49% may be owned by non-Mexicans.

The first version of the longwall strata control and maintenance system (LSCMS) has been successfully developed by the Strata Control Re¬search Team at the University of Alabama. The system includes a software package designed to monitor shield leg pressure, interpret the data and predict the forthcoming roof loads and the existence of geological anomalies. It can also detect maintenance problems of the face equipment. The LSCMS was installed underground and connected to the surface terminals at Drummond&apos;s Shoal Creek Mine in Alabama. The system has proven to be a useful and practical system for improving safety and efficiency in coal-mining operation. The Shoal Creek Mine is a new, large coal mine operated by Drummond with two longwall panels. The Blue Creek seam is the primary source of coal production. It is located at a depth of 275 to 440 m (900 to 1,450 ft) below the surface with an approximate 2% southwest dip. Typical strata conditions are represented by two stratigraphic columns (Figs. la and b). A fireclay/dark shale parting (called Middleman) 0.2- 0.7-m- (1- to 2.5-ft-) thick exists between the Mary Lee and Blue Creek seams. Mining conditions vary from area to area. This mainly depends on the Blue Creek seam thickness that ranges from 0.9 to 2.9 m (3 to 9.5 ft). The thickness of the Mary Lee and the parting is relatively consistent with a to¬tal of 0.9 m (3 ft). The value addition potential of ilmenite was examined using several characterization techniques. Raw ilmenite is composed of 93.65 wt.% of FeOTiO2, 3.55 wt.% of SiO2, 1.22 wt.% of Al2O3, and the remainder being other minor oxides. Ilmenite and powdered carbonized coconut shells were mixed in the weight ratio of 4:1. A separate fraction of the same mixture was added with powdered seashells in the weight ratio of 4:1:0.5. Six fractions of each mixture were distinctly milled from 1 to 6 h in a planetary ball mill. XRD spectra (broadened and diminished reflections of ilmenite) and FTIR observations (Ti―O―Cbonding) of milled samples indicate the possible incorporation of carbon into the ilmenite structure. Any clues of an occurrence of new rutile peaks were not observed in XRD spectra of milled samples. Consequently, the carbothermic reduction has not been initiated during mechanical activation. In this case, samples powdered for 6 h in a mill were isothermally annealed for 2 h under normal airflow at temperatures of 800 °C, 1000 °C, and 1200 °C, respectively. According to the X-ray diffractograms, the annealing temperatures of 1000 °C and 1200 °C exhibited almost similar trends with rutile (R), pseudobrookite (PB) and elemental iron (F), and a very few ilmenite (I) peaks. Consequently, 6 h of milling and 1000 °C annealing were concluded as the optimum conditions for the carbothermic reduction. Moreover, this study indicated seashells as a potential rate raiser for the carbothermic reduction of ilmenite at 800 °C. Therefore, this process is applicable to upgrade ilmenite into a mixture of synthetic rutile and elemental iron.

A field investigation was undertaken to study some of the. chemical and hydrological aspects of leaching an impermeable copper sulfide waste dump. Samples, obtained by means of a Becker pneumatic drill from Kennecott&apos;s Chino "J" dump, near Silver City, New Mexico, were analyzed for their moisture and soluble-salt content, Fe +2 , Fe +3, Cu +2 , and H in their interstitial solutions and non-water - soluble Fe, Cu, and S in their rinsed residues. Conclusions were drawn from these data concerning the overall chemistry of impermeable-dump leaching and the hydrological characteristics of the dump.

This is the sixth annual tabulation that gives mineral royalty information. This tabulation, like the previous editions, includes all of the earlier data plus more than 100 new entries. In addition to the royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. An article in the December 1984 Kentucky Coal Journal could have far reaching applications. It explains that a banking firm examined the "reserve risk" as one of six factors for analysis when financing a coal project. The firm concluded that coal reserves in Kentucky are worth an average of $0.29/t ($0.26 per st) in-place. The banking firm based this in-place value on its examination of more than 50 leases. In-place value is especially important when trying to establish a mineral value for a given deposit. Ernie Lehman wrote to this author after last year&apos;s column appeared and he quoted the lease rates for lead and zinc on federal land. He states, from first hand information, that the leases are based on a percentage of net smelter return as follows: 4% for the first five years, 4.5% for the next five years, and 5% thereafter. The figures used in last year&apos;s column ($ per st) came from dividing reported royalty income by reported production. The information reported last year merely translates the results of the net smelter return (as written in the lease) to royalty income per ton to the US Government for the various years. Statistics from the Minerals Management Service of the Federal Government show that oil and gas account for 40% and 53%, respectively, of the Federal royalty income. Coal accounts for about 4% and all other minerals, the remaining 3%. Oil and gas leases are mostly at 12.5%. Most of the coal leases are at 12.5% for surface mining operations and 8% for underground mining. Many of the other commodities are leased at 5%, which has been true for decades. Relative to Federal leases, this year&apos;s table shows some percentages and some costs per ton. This was done to give information about the leases and also to show income produced by various commodities. Note that some commodities have a variation in $/ton even though the royalty percent is the same. These variations result from a combination of factors that influence the value of a mineral commodity. The same caveats that have appeared in previous columns relative to factors that influence the value of reserves are restated. The data in the table serve as a general reference and are not intended to present an absolute scale of reserves costs. Several factors influence the value of any mineral commodity. The factors include: • location/transportation (especially significant for most industrial minerals); • market conditions both for the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine it; *quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing/beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; and • legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will significantly influence the cost of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity in column 1, and the subsequent columns give the location - either by state, US geographic area or Canadian province; the cost - R for royalty and P for purchased cost; and the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred. The last column offers either comments or gives a footnote number for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. The units may refer to cubic yards (/yd), cubic feet (/cu ft), tons (/T, 2000 lbs) or acres (/A). 1 cu yd = 0.7646 m3 1 cu ft = 0.2832 m3 1st=0.9078t 1 acre = 0.4047 hm or m2 In several cases, the royalty is a percentage of the sales price of the finished product and is levied against either the amount produced or the amount sold. Over the next two decades there will be significant trade and development opportunities in China for mining, engineering, equipment, and construction companies interested in becoming part of the development of China&apos;s chemical and fertilizer industries. At last count, China&apos;s phosphate ore reserves of 11.8 Gt (13 billion st), ranked fourth in the world behind the US, the USSR, and Sahara-Morocco. However, a recent statement by the head of the Ministry of Geology and Minerals, Sun Daguang, claims that with increased prospecting in the last few years, China&apos;s phosphate reserves now rank first in the world. Whatever the actual size of its known and potential reserves, China&apos;s present phosphate processing capabilities fall far short of demand, while the substantial progress that has been made in this area points out the severity of the problems that still remain. Since 1949 China has developed 181 mines and increased its phosphate concentrate production from 10 kt (11,000 st) to 10.86 Mt (11.97 million st). By the 1980s, China was the third largest chemical fertilizer producer in the world-although this claim is slightly misleading as China&apos;s nitrogen/phosphate potassium ratios are far from average world ratios and even further from US standards. According to the Sixth Five Year Plan promulgated in 1982, the country&apos;s development plans emphasize the expansion and upgrading of key energy and industrial sectors, including that of fertilizer production-specifically phosphate and potash. Within the framework of the plan, the Ministry of Chemical Industry&apos;s development priorities are to: • Increase potash production by 150% to 50 kt (55,115 st). • Raise phosphate fertilizer production 21.2% to 2.8 Mt (3.1 million st), 46 kt (50,705 st) of which will come from new projects constructed and completed within the Sixth Five Year Plan, with projected new production of phosphate concentrate and complex fertilizer in the next decades totaling 500 kt (551,146 st). • Commence work to increase phosphate ore production by 8.33 Mt (9.18 million st). Facilities for 2.43 Mt (2.68 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Commence work to increase iron pyrite ore production by 3.69 Mt (4.07 million st), facilities for 2.9 Mt (3.2 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Verify 600 Mt (661 million st) of new phosphate ore reserves. Since the promulgation of the Sixth Five Year Plan, Chinese authorities have announced that 70 key construction projects will receive top priority in the implementation of the plan. These projects include five in the chemical industry area, including the construction of four fertilizer plants in Urumqi (Xinjiang), Zhenhai (Zhejiang), Beijing, and Lucheng (Shanxi), and a pyrite mine in Yunfu (Guangdong). In addition, by 1985 the state will expand or construct three major phosphate mines: Wangji in Hubei, Kaiyang in Guizhou, and Kunyang in Yunnan. Fertilizer Ratios In 1982, China&apos;s fertilizer production was slightly higher than 12 Mt (13.2 million st) and consisted of 80% nitrogen, 19% phosphate, and 0.19% potassium. By 1985, state officials project that fertilizer production will reach 13.4 Mt (14.8 million st) and consist of 78.4% nitrogen (10.5 Mt or 11.6 million st), 21.2% phosphate (2.8 Mt or 3 million st), and 0.39% potassium (52.3 kt or 57,605 st). To attain the world average using the country&apos;s 1985 projected production level for nitrogen, China will have to double its 1985 phosphate production to 5.76 Mt (6.35 million st) and increase its 1985 potassium production almost 80 times to 4.1 Mt (4.5 million st). These numbers demonstrate the seriousness of the fertilizer production problem in China today and the long-term nature of the problem&apos;s solution. Development Examples Yunnan is the third largest phosphate-rich province in China with verified deposits of 1.9 Gt (2.1 billion st). Despite this abundance, the province only mines around 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of phosphate rock annually. In June of this year, Yunnan announced its intention to initiate 39 development projects within the next two and a half years, requiring an estimated $200 million worth of foreign investment.
