Introduction Flotation is a recovery process that utilizes natural or chemically-introduced hydrophobicity of minerals to separate ore from gangue by attaching the ore particles to bubbles. Flotation has been known since 1906, when it was patented by E. L. Sulman, H. G. K. Pickard and John Ballot. Flotation's first documented plant use was in 1911, when it was used on gravity tailings from a zinc plant. Cyanide leaching was first patented in 1887. Most early precious metals flotation was linked to lead or copper concentrates. Most precious metal flotation is linked to sulfide recovery and utilizes such reagents as xanthates, dithiophosphates and thiocarbanilides. But the involvement of flotation in precious metals recovery does not have to be limited to active flotation of the gold and silver bearing minerals. Flotation can be used to remove interfering minerals, such as carbon, or cyanicides, such as copper, arsenic bearing minerals or other cyanide complexing minerals. Cyanide Leaching The use of cyanide to recover precious metals is the backbone of the industry. The various recovery processes that use cyanide are: 1. Leaching-Counter Current Decantation(CCD) Merrill-Crowe 2. Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) 3. Carbon-in-leach (CIL) 4. Vat leaching 5. Heap leaching These processes are selected depending on ore grade, ore leaching characteristics, reserve size and capital limitations. Ore grade is used as the first criteria to determine the type of cyanide plant required. However, the reserve size can determine whether a ground ore alternative is used. The ore leaching characteristics may indicate that the higher recovery, associated with a process that employs grinding, is the only economic recovery alternative. There are some extremely large leaching plants with grades that would be non-economic for some existing heap leach plants. Many factors, such as strip ratios, metal recovery and reserve size, determine what the ultimate plant design will be. The exact processing scheme that is used, is a multifaceted decision matrix, which gives the process metallurgist some job security. Precious Metal Recovery Using Flotation Flotation recovery can conceivably be used on any ore that has been ground. Many operations utilize gravity separation on the ore to remove native gold from the ore prior to sending it to cyanide leaching. "The Kittilä underground mine in northern Finland is extracting one of the largest known gold deposits in Europe. Kittilä achieved commercial production on May 1, 2009, becoming Agnico Eagle’s first mine to open outside of Canada. The Kittilä orebodies were initially mined from two openpits – Suuri and Roura – and underground operations were added in October 2010. The pits were mined out in November 2012, so mining is now entirely underground in the Suuri and Roura deposits. Additional, small openpits will mine any remaining near-surface reserves in the future.The Kittilä Mine is located in the Lapland region of northern Finland, approximately 900 km (560 miles) north of Helsinki and 150 km (93 miles) north of the Arctic Circle. With a mine life estimated through 2034, Kittilä is Agnico’s longest-life mine.The mine’s proven and probable reserves contain 32 Mt (4.7 million oz) at 4.6 g/t (0.13 oz/ st) gold. Ore has been mined from underground since 2010. The original 3 kt/d (3,300 stpd) operation underwent an expansion project to increase the throughput capacity of the mill by 1 kt/d (1,100 stpd), starting by the end of 2014.The region around the Kittilä Mine is underlain by mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Kittilä Greenstone Belt oriented nearly vertical. This greenstone belt is similar to those hosting Agnico Eagle’s Canadian deposits in Quebec’s Abitibi region and Nunavut. At the contact point between ironrich and magnesium-rich rocks lies a 100- to 200- m (330- to 660-ft) thick structural zone known as the Suurikuusikko Trend. This trend hosts the Kittilä deposit, where multiple mineralized zones have been traced over a strike length of more than 25 km (15 miles).Most of Agnico Eagle’s work has focused on a 4.5-km (2-mile) segment of the Suurikuusikko Trend that hosts the five main zones of the known gold reserves and resources. From south to north they are: Ketola, Etela, Suuri, Roura and Rimpi.The ore at the Kittilä Mine is refractory, making gold extraction relatively difficult because the gold is generally locked inside the two main sulfide minerals – arsenopyrite and arsenic-rich pyrite. Only about 4 percent is very fine-grained “free gold” (not locked in sulfide grains) and easier to extract. Most of this free gold is found in the outer, oxidized or eroded sections of the ore."

Introduction The Sleeper mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 56 km (35 air miles) northwest of Winnemucca, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in 1984 by an Amax exploration geologist. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility studies and metallurgical testwork. Final evaluation of the mine potential proceeded very quickly. The project received Amax board approval in July 1985. Eight months later, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold ($1 million) was shipped one month later, in March 1986. Total plant capital was $27 million. Payback was achieved in six months. The Sleeper mine was expected to produce 1.6 t (53,000 oz) of gold and 1.3 t (41,000 oz) of silver annually. However, the ore body exceeded all expectations. Production for the first 10 months of operation amounted to 4 t (128,000 oz) of gold and 2.9 t (94,000 oz) of silver. Direct cash operating costs are in the $1.77/g ($55 per oz) range. Amax is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine's life. (See update on page 242.) Geology The Sleeper gold deposit is located on the northwestern flank of the Slumbering Hills and in the Awakening Mining District. Rocks exposed in the vicinity of the deposit are interbedded siltstones, sandstones, and limestones of Triassic age. They are overlain by latite lava flows and tuffs of Tertiary age. Dikes and sills of latite and andesite intrude the sedimentary rocks. Quaternary deposits of mostly sand with minor gravel and clay cover a pediment containing the gold deposit. The sedimentary and volcanic rock units have been transsected and offset by extensive north- northeast trending faults and less abundant northwest trending faults. Both fault systems fractured and prepared the ground for subsequent invasions of mineral-bearing hot spring geothermal waters. The hot spring systems produced widespread hydrothermal alteration and gold mineralization at silicified centers near feeder fault structures. The deposit is hosted by siltstone and latite that have been hydrothermally brecciated. The main breccia is elongated north-northeasterly. The hydrothermal breccia zones appear to dip steeply to the west. Gold mineralization consists of native gold and electrum deposited in two or more high-grade quartz-breccia veins. INTRODUCTION The basic purpose of this paper is to suggest procedures and practices to insure that no employee working in a uranium milling operation receives exposure to radioactive, toxic, or other materials or agents that might produce a permanent, deleterious effect upon his physical health and well-being. This program is also designed to insure that each employee can carry out his assigned duties without risk to his health or to that of his fellow workers. The assumptions underlying this program are by necessity, conservative, with emphasis being placed upon prevention rather than correction or reaction to an undesirable situation. The limits specified-either as Threshold Limit Values (TLVs), Maximum Permissible Concentrations (MPCs), or Radiation Protection Guides (RPGs)--represent both standards of best practice and those of law and regulation. The total program is envisioned as a balanced combination of occupational hygiene and radiation monitoring. This includes surveying, air sampling, personnel dosimetry, bioassay, medical surveillance, epidemiology, and training--all backed by a thoroughly tested and evaluated set of emergency procedures. The program, as presented, is keyed to the results of monitoring, surveying, air sampling, medical surveillance, and epidemiology--it being obvious that no problem can result when no hazard can be identified. The lack of an identified hazard, however, does not negate the need for such a program and prudence suggests the need for routine surveillance programs in the best-designed facility. [The Model Mill] The model mill used in this paper is that presented by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency in its study of the uranium fuel cycle1. The model mill processes 600,000 metric tons of ore per year into 1,140 metric tons of U308 as yellowcake per year using an acid leach process. Other characteristics of the mill such as location, tailings dam design, number of light water reactors supported, and geographical location are not pertinent to this paper. The usual remote western location of these facilities produce some difficulties in delivering the required occupational medical services and is not within the scope of this paper. The operating lifetime of most mills is commonly estimated as from 12 to 15 years in actual practice; however, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency estimated a 20-year lifetime for its model. The principal steps in the acid leach process include :2 (a) Ore is blended and crushed to pass through a 2.5 cm (one inch) screen. The crushed ore is then wet ground in a rod or ball mill and is transferred as a slurry to leaching tanks. (b) The ore is contacted with sulfuric acid solution and an oxidizing reagent to leach uranium from the ore. The product liquor is pumped to the solvent-extraction circuit while the washed residues (tailings) are sent to the tailings pond or pile. (c) Solvent extraction is used to purify and concentrate the uranium. (d) The uranium is precipitated with ammonia and transferred as a slurry. (e) Thickening and centrifuging are used to separate the uranium concentrate from residual liquids. (f) The concentrate is calcined and pulverized. (g) The concentrate or yellowcake is packaged in 208 liter drums for shipment. This process is illustrated in Figure 1.3

"The exploration of seamounts south of the Azores during the EMEPC/Açores/G3/2007 campaign allowed for the collection of 30 Fe-Mn crusts from the Atlantis, Great Meteor, Small Hyeres, Irving and Plato seamounts, as well as from the East Azores Fracture Zone. These were the first samples of Fe-Mn crusts studied from these seamounts. The Fe-Mn crusts were analyzed using multiple analytical methods.The crusts are fairly homogeneous, showing typical textures for this type of occurrences. The Fe/Mn ratio, patterns and concentrations in rare earth elements, and the great homogeneity of the crusts lead to the conclusion that they have a hydrogenetic origin, precipitating directly from seawater. Although the content in Fe and Mn of the crusts is consistent with data available for the Atlantic, the mean concentration of Co is comparable to the average values for the Pacific. Cu and Ni show lower values than the ones known for the Pacific."

After years of cutbacks, closures and layoffs, the mining industry is beginning to expand again. Metals prices are up and so is investor interest and confidence in the industry. Gold prices began to slowly move up in January2003 and finally cracked the $12.86/g ($400/oz) mark in early December. Silver, too, is up, as is copper. So the mining industry is feeling good about itself again and many companies are expanding existing mines and developing new ones. One side benefit to mining’s improved outlook is that companies are beginning to send more of their employees to industry conferences. Such was the case at the109th Northwest Mining Association meeting in Spokane, WA. The meeting was held in early December and attracted 1,100 attendees and 84 exhibiting companies. That is up from 2002’s attendance of about 900 people and 65 exhibitors. The theme was “A Partnership into the Future.”

There are several methods (empirical, statistical, and machine learning tools) to calculate blast-induced ground vibration. Still, due to complications in the blasting procedure, under varying blasting loads and strata conditions, it is not easy to predict and simulate blast vibration precisely. Therefore, a study was conducted to simulate the field blast data in Ansys software using explicit dynamics. For this study, monitoring of ground vibration for 20 single hole blasts was carried out. The density of emulsion explosives was in the range of 0.9 to 1.15 g/cc. In the laboratory, rock properties were determined from the rock sample collected from the mine site before blasting. The in-hole velocity of detonation (VoD) and the density of the emulsion explosive were also determined. These parameters were used for numerical analysis to know the ground vibrations at specified points. The results of ground vibration predicted by the model are validated using field data.

10.1-SHAFT SINKING AND RAISING BY CONVENTIONAL METHODS VICTOR L. STEVEN 10.1.1-SHAFT SELECTION A great deal of thought and planning should go into the selection of a mine shaft to provide the most effective use over the greatest, period of time. It sometimes is better to make an additional capital expenditure in the initial shaft program to achieve the greatest overall shaft usage. It is possible to sink a shaft which could be used for mine development, and initial production and later convert it to a ventilation, service or escape shaft. It is important to consider a second shaft in the original planning to provide ventilation, an escapeway and services for overall efficient production and safety. A second shaft usually is required to comply with state and federal mining laws. The main items to consider in shaft selection are: 1. Installation from surface or underground. 2. Vertical or inclined (sec Sec. 10.1.4L for discussion of factors involved in choice). 3. Tonnage to be hoisted. 4. Size of mining equipment to be lowered through the shaft to the underground workings. 5. Amount of water to be handled in the mining operation. 6. Ventilation requirements. 7. Type of ground the shaft is to be sunk through. 8. Position of shaft with relation to ore body. After the main features of a shaft arc determined, such as vertical or inclined, shape, size, type of lining and support, compartments, and shaft. facilities (air, water, ventilation, pump lines, power cahles, etc.), then :I sinking plant and procedures should be planned. At this point it should be decided whether the company will sink the shaft with its own crews or award the job to a competent shaft contractor. Company sinking generally will cost less if competent shaft men are available. Money also will be saved in plant costs, such as for hoist, headframe, compressed air, buildings, etc., as these will be part of the permanent plant and can be used in the sinking operation. Labor costs generally will be lower than contractor construction rates. The advantage of having a contract, or is the speed of completion of the project. Contractors usually have headframes and hoists ready to move on the job immediately and have trained crews ready to complete the project in the shortest possible time. Next, the type of surface sinking plant (hoist, headframe, etc.) should be selected and a determination made whether it is to be temporary or permanent. In most cases it is less expensive to install the permanent, headframe and hoist, and use them for sinking. The type of actual sinking equipment to be used should be evaluated for the most efficient sinking cycle, e.g., mucking method, drilling method, and lining or support means. The proper cycling of drilling, mucking and lining is extremely important in obtaining the most favourable sinking costs. 10.1.2 - GROUND STABILIZATION AND WATER CONTROL Prior to the shaft-sinking operation an investigation should be made into ground-water conditions. "One of the most important environmental issues associated with contemporary openpit mining is the closure of mine pit lakes, and the perpetual legacy these lakes can potentially generate. Ideally, successful pit lake closure includes the following:• The water quality within the pit lake, plus surface water and ground water discharging from the pit lake, meets premining or other acceptable water quality conditions of the receiving environment. • The termination of all active treatment processes.• The return of the pit lake to the government for long-term care and maintenance.• The release of the mining company from all future liabilities associated with the pit lake.• The return of the environmental bond to the mining company.• The reuse of the pit lake for some post-closure, beneficial purpose.The achievement of these goals is known as walk away pit lake closure.Peer-reviewed publications of successful walk away, pit lake closure provide mining companies with the ability to address public concerns regarding the safety of pit lakes which commonly occur during the permitting, operations, and closure phases of mining. To date, most published work on walk away, pit lake closure work has occurred in the coal mining sector in Germany and Australia (McCullough et al., 2009; Jones and McCullough, 2011; Kumar et al., 2013; Schultz et al., 2013). In North America, examples of walk away, pit lake closure are not widely discussed in the literature despite there being excellent examples from the coal mining sector in Alberta, Canada (e.g. Pleasure Island, Black Diamond, East Pit, Sphynx, Robb, Lovette, Siltstone and Sterling), and from the iron mining sector in Minnesota in the United States (e.g. Portsmouth Lake, see MNDNR, 2018). Although seldom included in discussions of pit lakes from the metal and coal mining sectors, the aggregate and fabricated-stone mining sectors also produce pit lakes, and there are numerous examples throughout North America where these pit lakes have been successfully closed and transformed into post-mining resources (Vandenberg, 2018; Crossman, 2019). The difficulty of finding these good examples in the literature makes it challenging for companies to respond to public and regulatory questions regarding pit lake closure and reuse. As such, there is a pressing need to document the motivations and approaches used in examples of successful, walk away, pit lake closure in North America so that the mining industry, at large, can learn from these examples and can better address public concerns."

"Within the framework of the European project NeTTUN, the Laboratory of Civil Engineering and Building Sciences of ENTPE in Lyon (France) is in charge of a large experimental campaign to investigate the impact of tunneling on neighbouring piled structures. For this study, an original reduced-scale (around 1:10) physical model of EPBS is used. This ""1g"" laboratory model is able to reproduce the main features of the excavation method. For this new experimental program, the miniature EPBS advances inside a large tank filled with a model soil (dry sand), in which instrumented piles were pre-installed. In this paper, the authors describe briefly the original 3D device and present results concerning the impact of tunneling on a single pile located above the tunnel. Different tunneling face pressure are studied in connection with the practice. Machine parameters, pile solicitations and stress-strain behavior of the soil mass monitored under real time conditions are discussed. INTRODUCTION When tunnels are constructed in urban areas, they often come close to pre-existing structures, such as pile foundations. Perturbations of tunnel construction on these neighbouring structures must be considered during design and construction of the tunnel. Ground movements due to tunnelling may induce bending moments, lateral and vertical loads, settlements and lateral deflections in the piles, which may lead to structural damage or failure of the piles or the supported structure. The interaction between piles and a tunnel in construction is a complex three dimensional problem. To date, several experimental approaches have been carried out to analyse the effects of tunnelling on piled foundations (Bezuijen et al., 1994, Loganathan et al., 2000, Jacobsz et al. 2004, Lee and Basset, 2006, Marshall and Mair, 2011, ). These different studies carried out in the laboratory on 1 g or centrifuged models aim at a better understanding of tunnel - piles interaction and a quantification of the influence of each dominating parameter on the structural responses. Parameters like foundation type (single pile, group of piles) and geometry, relative tunnel – pile position, volume loss induced by tunnelling, ground characteristics, pile loading history were considered. However, most of these experiments were carried out under plane strain conditions by modelling the volume loss due to tunnel excavation by decreasing the tunnel diameter or the radial support pressure. As a result, these models do not adequately account for the variations of settlements both in the longitudinal and the transverse direction, which can induce significant flexional and torsional effects on the structures. These effects are particularly critical and detrimental in the case of historical monuments."

This paper describes work done by Placer Dome Technical Services Limited, a subsidiary of Barrick Gold, and Nautilus Minerals Inc. in support of the conceptual design of a subsea mining system. It describes an overall concept design plus specific studies into mechanical excavation at depth. The concept design includes one or more subsea excavators connected to a suction riser, which transports the cut material to a shipboard dewatering and offloading system. A multi-phase investigation was performed into the mechanical excavation of seafloor massive sulphides at depths of around 1600m. Rock samples were recovered and tested for rock properties and cutting behaviour. A small pick drum cutter was procured and tested on a representative concrete slab in a lab and tested again while submerged in a test tank. Finally the cutter was tested on a massive sulphide ore body at 1600m depth. The cutting performance results, e.g. pick forces and specific energies, should provide valuable input to the design of future full scale subsea mining systems.

In this study, the effects of various extraction and stripping parameters, such as equilibrium pH (7.0, 8.5 and 10), extractant concentration (5, 10 and 20 volume %), organic-to-aqueous (O/A) ratio and stripping agent type and concentration were studied on chromium (VI) recovery from chromium electroplating rinse bath wastewater using Aliquat 336. Results showed that these parameters all had significant effects on chromium (VI) recovery. A pregnant strip solution from a chromium electroplating rinse bath wastewater with 33.4 g/L chromium content, suitable for sodium dichromate production, was generated by 20 vol. % Aliquat 336 in commercial kerosene. The O/A ratio was 1/4 and the equilibrium pH value was 0.87, the as-received pH value. The wastewater was treated with a two-stage countercurrent extraction process to produce a loaded organic phase, which was later stripped at the O/A ratio of two with a 4-M NaOH solution in a two-stage countercurrent stripping process using Taguchi?s optimization technique.

About Cominco Only the original Broken Hill zinc deposit in Australia is larger than Cominco's Red Dog deposit. Indeed, the third largest zinc deposit in the world is Cominco's own Sullivan mine in British Columbia. The production plan at Red Dog is based on mining 1.9 Mt/a (2.1 million stpy) or ore, to produce 635 kt (700,000 st) of zinc and lead concentrates. At full production, Red Dog will be the largest zinc mine in the Western world. It will also be one of the lowest cost producers in the Western world. And Red Dog will be one of the first major hardrock mines to operate in Alaska in modern times. The Red Dog project will be the third and largest of Cominco's Arctic mining developments in the past 13 years. The company's Black Angel mine in Greenland started up in 1973. And the Polaris mine, high in the Canadian Arctic, began production in 1982. Red Dog is one of the world's great mineral deposits. It is a unique combination of large size, high grade, and a waste-to-ore ratio less than 1:1. The present mineral reserve (Table 1) is estimated to be 77 Mt (85 million st), at a grade of 17.1% zinc, 5% lead, and 82 g/t (2.4 oz per st) of silver. Mine life is estimated at nearly 50 years. Cominco is the largest producer of lead and zinc in the Western world. Cominco's smelter in southern British Columbia is the largest lead and zinc plant in the west. Cominco also produces copper, steel, tin, gold and silver, along with potash, ammonia, urea, and phosphate fertilizers. But Cominco's major products are lead and zinc. At present, Cominco produces more than 10% of the Western world's needs for these metals. Background-Red Dog The Red Dog mineral deposit is located in northwestern Alaska, about 960 km (600 miles) by air from Anchorage, Alaska's largest city. The Red Dog region is home to more than 5000 people living in 11 villages. The largest village is Kotzebue, with a population of about 2500. The village is located about 144 km (90 miles) southwest of the mine. The country around Red Dog features rolling hills, leading into mountains to the north and east. The deposit, at an elevation of 305 m (1000 ft), is in permafrost. But the area is not nearly as cold as that encountered in the Canadian Arctic, or on Alaska's North Slope. At Red Dog, the permafrost is relatively fragile. It can be thawed fairly easily, a factor in engineering designs. Red Dog Creek flows through the mineral deposit. One of the natural phenomena at Red Dog is the presence of significant heavy metal contamination in the creek. This has eliminated all fish in the vicinity of the deposit. The contamination, and resulting mineral stain, led to the discovery of Red Dog. The staining is caused by rain and snowmelt. This leaches the heavy metals from the mineral zone, which comes right to the surface in many places. As mining progresses, this surface mantle will be removed. This will

The Cadia Mine is located 25kms South West of Orange in the central west of New South Wales (NSW), Australia (Figure 1). Orange is a major regional centre with a population of 35,000 people. Cadia has a history of mining and exploration dating back to 1851 and shortly after the first Australian gold rush at Ophir, north of Orange. Newcrest Mining commenced an exploration program at Cadia Hill in 1992. This identified a substantial zone of copper and gold mineralization. Subsequent resource definition drilling defined an orebody with a mineable reserve of 200 million tonnes of ore with an average gold grade of 0.74g/t and 0.17\ copper. A full feasibility study commenced in 1994, approvals to proceed with development were granted in September 1996 and the processing plant was commissioned in July 1998. The project came in on budget at A$440 million and on time, 24 months from design to construction. The estimated operating cost at the time of commissioning was A$8.85/t of mill feed.

1984 saw the 30th anniversary of a momentous event in Soviet geology-the discovery of kimberlites in Siberia, an event that vaulted the Soviet Union to second rank among the world's producers of both gem and industrial diamonds. There are many legends associated with this story, legends about those who predicted the discovery and those who achieved it in the field. The story told here unfolded during the field campaigns of the 1940s through 1960s, as witnessed by the authors and their companies of an earlier generation. This story illustrates science, chance, and human emotions at work, resulting in a blend of conviction, courage, bureaucratic sniping, and competition for glory. At the same time, it is an illustration of the workings of the Soviet exploration system. In a broader sense, it is the realization of the Russian image-boundless natural wealth, indomitable ingenuity, and the rigid political economic system that permeates the Russian landscape as well as the people. Most accounts of the Siberian diamond saga begin with statements such as, "This discovery confirmed the predictions of...", or "It was a result of predictions of one of the greatest Soviet geologists, Academician V.S. Sobelov...". These are only part of the truth. It had become apparent even in the 1930s that the Siberian Platform contained one of the Earth's greatest Basaltic provinces, described in a monograph by Sobolev...; and at the end of the thirties, G.G. Moor of the Institute of Arctic Geology found alnoites, similar in many ways to kimberlites. At the same time, the famous polar geologist, N.N. Urvantsev found other kimberlite like rocks in the southern Taymir Peninsula, adjacent to the Siberian Platform. In publications describing these rocks, Moor and Urvantsev mentioned for the first time the possibility of finding diamondiferous kimberlites similar to those in South Africa. Unfortunately, Urvantsev spent little time in the field between terms in concentration camps. Moor was considered by his superiors to be no more than a good descriptive petrographer; they suggested to him that his conclusions should be backed up by more highly regarded specialists. Thereupon, Moor asked Sobolev to coauthor a paper with him and this became the widely quoted prediction about diamonds in Siberia. Another early paper should also be mentioned, an unpublished paper found by M.I. Rabkin in the geological archives of the Norilsk Metallurgical Plant, written by Yu. M. Sheinmann when he worked in the concentration camp there in the late forties. This report placed the probable location of yet-to-be-discovered kimberlites within less than 100 km of their correct location.

This study investigates upgrading of low-grade banded hematite quartzite iron ore (Fe ~31%). Conventional beneficiation was found to be futile. The susceptibility of iron phases to microwave exposure and their selective absorption assists in the liberation of iron values. Microwave exposure of coarse particles at 540 W for 10 min yielded a concentrate with Fe 56.30% and recovery of 50.68%. Conventional carbothermic reduction at 500 °C, 60 min and 9% charcoal yielded a concentrate with Fe 57.6% and iron recovery of 68%. The presence of sufficiently bonded silica leads to an easy formation of a fayalite phase. The microwave reduction design yielded FeG of 57.6%, FeR of 47% and a yield of 24% at an optimal condition of 540 W, 8 min and 6% charcoal. It was found that a small fraction of microwave-irradiated ore-charcoal mixture melted rapidly, and pure ferrite balls were observed within 8 min. An optical micrograph of a ferrite ball reveals the retained austenite and martensite phase.

A stochastic model for evaluating the impact of the reliability and maintainability of shovels and trucks on the operational effectiveness of shovel-truck mining systems is presented. In the model, the Markov modeling technique is used to analyze the operating status of a shovel-truck mining system. Then, simulation is used to study the productivity of a shovel-truck system in a particular state. Finally, the relationship between the effectiveness of a shovel-truck system in terms of productivity and the reliability and maintainability of equipment is established. This relationship may be very useful to mine managers in making decisions in surface mining (e.g., regarding production process control, equipment replacement, and maintenance planning). A quantitative study is given to demonstrate how the reliability and maintainability of equipment affect the system effectiveness and how to pinpoint the parameter that has the most significant effect on the system effectiveness. The quantitative study indicated that in order to improve the system effectiveness significantly, the reliability and maintainability of the equipment need to be improved simultaneously.
