Merrill-Crowe is the primary process used for the concentration and purification of silver in a cyanide solution. The Langmuir Adsorption model for silver recovery in a cyanide solution was used for the study. The maximum adsorption capacity was 6.19 mmol/g for silver. This model properly adjusts the experimental results of the adsorption equilibrium with high correlation coefficients, which also favors the formation of a single layer of molecules adsorbed for the silver in the electrocoagulation- generated species. The thermodynamic parameters ΔG, ΔH, and ΔS were estimated, and it was found that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. For the kinetic study, the Lagergren second-order equation was used to study the adsorption speed. To characterize the solids coming from the electrocoagulation, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were used; the results of this study suggest that silver is present in aluminite, hydroniumjarosite, and alunogen.

The Work Crew Performance Model (WCPM) is a method for designing, implementing, and evaluating? performance improvement strategies for machine operators and other mining personnel. The WCPM offers a practical approach for measuring job proficiency and identifying costly behaviors. It enables interventions aimed at performance improvement, especially training, to be assessed monetarily. Two interrelated elements of the WCPM are emphasized: observational techniques for establishing performance baselines and measuring performance outcomes and cost linkages between job competencies and measures related to profitability. Inter-and intra-subject differences in performance-related behaviors of regular and incidental shuttle car operators were detected during field validation of the WCPM. Downtime data were used as outcome measures to test linkages between performance error rates and cost consequences. Use of a simulation program for analyzing continuous mining face operations showed how common shuttle car operating parameters (e.g., payload, tram rate) can be used as cost-conscious indicators of performance variability and therefore as targets for performance improvement.

At the termination of mining, the quality of ground water in the ore-zone aquifer must be returned to a condition predetermined by the permitting agency. To immobilize the redox-sensitive elements (e.g., uranium, arsenic, selenium, molybdenum), it has been suggested that a reducing agent be circulated through the leached ore zone. We have conducted laboratory experiments to test the ability of sodium sulfide as such a reducing agent. Sodium sulfide lowered the redox potential of the effluent such that insoluble minerals containing the redox-sensitive elements should be stable. The uranium concentration of the solution decreased by more than three orders of magnitude. In column experiments, by the time ten pore volumes of the sulfide solution had flowed through, sulfide minerals were forming. The experimental results indicate that the addition of sodium sulfide should cause the chemical reduction of the leached sediments, thereby producing long-term stability of the ground-water/sediment system.

This paper considers the potential water quality impacts of future energy scenarios which project an approximate doubling of coal utilization from 1975 to 1985. The major impacts estimated for coal extraction are related to effluents from unregulated activities (reclaimed areas prior to stable vegetation) and pollutants (e.g., metals and ammonia). Where applicable, the EPA effluent guidelines to be in effect by 1983 reduce the impact of individual sources to low levels. For example, total suspended solids and acidic discharges are to be regulated to levels generally below recommended water quality standards for receiving streams. However, implementation of these guidelines, particularly for coal extraction, has not been demonstrated on a wide scale. Water quality is not expected to be a major constraining factor for increasing capacity of coal fired utility and industrial boilers. Water quality control has not been demonstrated on a commercial scale for coal conversion to synfuels, but adequate control technologies appear to be feasible.

In order to maximize the benefits obtained from flocculating agents when used as settling aids in high rate and conventional thickeners, it is often necessary to dilute the thickener feed prior to flocculant addition. In some cases, no flocculation at all is possible unless dilution water is used. The most common method of diluting thickener feed has been to recirculate some of the thickener overflow by means of a centrifugal pumping system. This represents a significant capital and operating cost. Supaflo Technologies of Australia has developed and patented an internal recirculation method known as Auto Dilution (or "Autodil") which is based on the principle that an hydraulic head differential exists between the inside and outside of the feedwell because of the higher S. G. of the pulp inside the feedwell, By installing non-return ports in the feedwell wall at the appropriate level, supernatant solution flows into the feedwell at a calculated rate and dilutes the feed without any need for external recirculation of overflow.

Bauxite ore is used to produce alumina in the Bayer process. For each tonne of alumina produced, around 1 to 1.5 t of bauxite residue is generated, with an estimated 4 Mt of the residue generated worldwide in 2015, four times more in 1985. The residue is currently stocked in tailings dams. A new step in the Bayer process has been used to recover sodium hydroxide, which is used as a leaching agent, and reduce its content in the residue. After digestion, the residue is separated from the Bayer liquor and passed through press filters. This bauxite residue is known as a source of scandium. Characterization of the residue is an important step to map opportunities worldwide. For this reason, the goal of the present study was to characterize the bauxite residue and evaluate the challenges for scandium recovery. The scandium content was found to be 43 g/t, which makes this bauxite residue attractive for extraction purposes.

The solutions used in the heap biooxidative treatment of sulfidic refractory Au ores and concentrates generally load free mineral acid and metals and, in time, become bacteria activity inhibiting due to increased acid and/or metals concentrations. The metals­acid loaded, bacteria action inhibiting, solution must then be: (a) processed, prior to re-use, to reduce its metals and/or free acid mineral acid components to bacteria activity compatible levels; or (b) neutralized prior to discharge. The most common solution processing method to adjust acid-metals contents is liming to effect the precipitation of dissolved metals and neutralization of acid sufficient for solution discharge or re-use. The lime treated solution is high in suspended, colloidal precipitates and requires clarification before reuse. Most often the "bleedstream" of biooxidation solution that is lime treated is discharged and req­uisite volumes of fresh water added to the process inventory. Depending on the level of bacterial action in a heap and the acid consumption characteristics of the ore/concentrate being biooxi­dized, the bleedstream taken from the circulating, irrigation on­off, solution, can be large (e.g., 10%-20% and sometimes as much as 50% of the daily solution flow requires treatment-dis­charge). The lime charge for bleedstream treatment is commen­surately large and represents a major operating cost of the bioox­idation process. The patented HW Process Technologies (HWPT) Engineered Membrane Separation (EMS™) method is an alternative biooxi­dation bleedstream treatment method. EMS™ processing removes the multivalent base metals ions in an acid solution to a small volume EMS™ "concentrate" (typically 25% of the feed­stream volume). The EMS™ method coincidentally makes a "clean acid" EMS™ "permeate" (typically 75% of the feed­stream volume). In general, EMSTM processing enables 75% of the bleedstream volume to be recycled; allows up to 2/3 of the bleedstream acid to be recovered as a 10% solution; and delivers dissolved metals in a highly concentrated stream suited to a. metals recovery or b. reduced cost lime neutralization for a given metals precip­itation relative to full bleedstream neutralization (typically a 30% lime use savings). Implicit in the recovery of process water for re-use and reduced reagent addition requirement for metals precipitation is a significant reduction in wastewater-sludge dis­posal facility size.

The objective of this work was to assess the influence of parameters such as residence time, solid content, and temperature in a process route towards purified rare earth liquor which could be adequate to produce marketable rare earth products. The steps of the process route proposed in this study comprised water leaching of a sulfated rare earth ore and removal of impurities through the purification of the rare earth sulfuric liquor, which is the product of the water leaching step. The sample used in the water leaching experiments was a sulfated rare earth ore produced by the reaction of a beneficiated rare earth ore with sulfuric acid followed by roasting at 700 °C for 2 h in a muffle furnace and cooling at 20 °C. The water leaching experiments showed that the best condition comprised a residence time of 30 min, temperature of 20 °C, and solid content of 10% w/w, resulting in a recovery of 71.3% of the rare earth elements (REE) and a lower impurity extraction, e.g., only 15.0% of Fe, representing the main impurity in the rare earth ore. Even when presenting low amounts of impurities, the rare earth sulfuric liquor still needed to be purified before it can be used in the production of marketable rare earth products. In the study, the rare earth sulfuric liquors were purified in two consecutive neutralization steps, first by dosing the limestone pulp to pH up to 3.5 and secondly by adding the lime pulp to raise the pH from 3.5 to 5.0. The application of two consecutive purification steps at 20 °C resulted in the highest overall REE recoveries (65.4%) throughout all the steps of the process, being 71.3% in the water leaching, 99.6% in the partial purification with limestone pulp, and 92.1% in the purification with lime pulp at 20 °C. Under this condition, there was a total elimination of Fe, P, and Th and a significant reduction in the Al, U, and sulfate concentrations in the purified rare earth liquor. The purified rare earth liquor attained through the experiment is expected to be amenable to be used in the production of marketable products due to the lower impurities/REO mass ratios.

In this paper, the performance of the Knelson Concentrator and of the batch and continuous Falcon Concentrators are compared. The units are based on different operating principles, and perform quite differently. The Knelson yields very high free gold recoveries over a wide size range of both the recovered and rejected species. It is less effective in recovering very fine (<15 μm) or very flaky gold, as encountered in flotation feeds, concentrates or tails. It is the preferred unit for gold recovery from grinding circuits. The batch Falcon is effective in the fine range, typically less than 37 μm for gold. Its recovery zone is quickly saturated when there is significant heavies in the feed. It works best as a pre-concentration unit, or when sulphide content is low. The continuous Falcon is a versatile unit which is capable of recovering fine heavies (density down to 5 g/cm 3), especially from coarser gangue.

Residual cyanide in cyanidation tailings can be detoxified by its oxidation to cyanate, as in the Inco and Degussa processes. However, cyanate, the product of detoxification and other oxidation processes, may be reduced to cyanide in reducing environments, e.g., deepwater discharge of cyanidation tailings. This study shows that the reduc-tion of cyanate to cyanide occurs and that the reduction rate increases with decreasing solution redox potential. Solutions with lower pH favor the reduction rate. No significant difference was observed between the results of tests prepared with distilled water and seawater, and the presence of cyanidation solid tailings does not show an effect on the reduction. Because cyanate can be reduced to toxic cyanide, causing environmental concerns, the deepwater discharges of cyanidation tailings must be handled carefully.

Characterization of ore and waste-rock material using automated quantitative micro-mineralogical techniques (e.g., QEMSCAN® and MLA) has the potential to complement traditional acid-base accounting and humidity cell techniques when predicting acid generation and metal release. These characterization techniques, which most commonly are used for metallurgical, mineral-processing, and geometallurgical applications, can be broadly applied throughout the mine-life cycle to include numerous environmental applications. Critical insights into mineral liberation, mineral associations, particle size, particle texture, and mineralogical residence phase(s) of environmentally important elements can be used to anticipate potential environmental challenges. Resources spent on initial characterization result in lower uncertainties of potential environmental impacts and possible cost savings associated with remediation and closure. Examples illustrate mineralogical and textural characterization of fluvial tailings material from the upper Arkansas River in Colorado.

Introduction The Homestake Mining Co. has always been big on gold. After 108 years in the business, the company and its principal product are almost synonymous. The relationship continues. On Sept. 28, 1985, Homestake held formal dedication ceremonies for its newest gold mine - McLaughlin. The McLaughlin open-pit operation is located in northern California, some 113 km (70 miles) northeast of San Francisco. It lies near the boundaries of three counties - Napa, Yolo, and Lake - and a portion of its facilities are located in each. McLaughlin was originally the site of the Manhattan mercury mine that produced nearly 80,000 flasks of the quicksilver from the 1860s to 1978. At the September dedication, Homestake renamed the mine in honor of the late Donald H. McLaughlin. McLaughlin was with Homestake for nearly 60 years. He rose from exploration geologist to his ultimate positions of chief executive officer, director, chairman of the board of directors, chairman emeritus, and chairman of the executive committee. The discovery of the McLaughlin deposit occurred in 1978, the last year of operation for the Manhattan mine. Homestake geologists used a newly developed model and found surface gold at the mine site. That same year, Homestake signed an agreement with the property owner and began a two-and-a-half year exploration program. An initial discovery announcement of 31.1 t (1 million oz) of gold was made in 1980. In 1981, this was revised to 93.3 t (3 million oz), or 18 Mt (20 million st) of ore grading 5.2 g/t (0.152 oz per st). Expected mine life is 20 years. Construction began in September 1983, following the issuance of stage one permits. Start-up of operations took place in early 1985 and the first gold-silver dore bar was poured on March 4. Since then, more than 540 kt (600,000 st) of ore has been milled, producing about 1.6 t (50,000 oz) of gold. Of special interest at McLaughlin is the use of three autoclaves for gold extraction. According to Homestake, this is a first. The autoclaves are designed for a 90% gold recovery rate. Early results have proven yields at this rate and higher. PRINCIPLES OF MINE PLANNING During the initial planning stages, all mining operations are analyzed and evaluated in a similar fashion. This similarity holds true because the mine-planning procedure can be reduced to a network of interrelated systems that are tied together by a common philosophy of mine planning: namely, that the resource is to be extracted in a manner which is safe, efficient, and profitable. The success of the mining operation cannot be guaranteed unless each of these three requirements is met. Fig. 1 shows a flowchart for the initial planning of any mining operation. Notice that there is a preplanning stage that leads to the planning of four interrelated systems. The preplanning stage includes property exploration, estimation of production and manpower requirements, and the establishment of construction timetables. The four systems, evaluated after the pre-planning stage, are broken down into the following: (1) Excavation and handling system, (2) Strata control system, (3) Operating support system, and (4) Service support system. The Excavation and handling system includes the selection of all the equipment for the removal of the resource from its in-place deposit (e.g., draglines, continuous miners, rock drills, etc.) and for the transportation of the mined material from the face (e.g., belt conveyors, trucks, etc.). The Strata control system incorporates all those considerations which maintain the integrity of the roof, ribs, floor, and overburden both during and after the extraction phase; typical considerations in this area include pillar sizing, artificial support of the immediate roof in mine entries, and subsidence protection. The Operating support system contains the "necessary evils" of mine planning; the system consumes a large percentage of the mining engineer&apos;s planning time but does not contribute to the actual extraction of the resource. However, if proper attention is not paid to the various components of the system, such as ventilation, drainage, and power, then the mining operation will not perform to its capabilities. Finally, the Service support system is composed of those operations which keep the mine running efficiently; typical examples of these include maintenance and sup- ply. One important concept that Fig. 1 is designed to emphasize is that the four systems are interrelated; typically, a slight alteration of one can affect the performance of another. If these interrelationships are ignored, the effects on the system can be disastrous. The mine preplanning stage and the four subsequent system evaluations constitute the Analysis portion of the mine planning flowchart. After this portion of the study is completed, the overall projected operation can be evaluated by techniques such as financial analysis. This last step in the study is referred to as the Synthesis of the previously calculated parameters into an overall plan. Much has been written about the overall evaluation of mining properties, but, over the past thirty years, very little has been written about the analysis of mine- planning systems in a coordinated manner. Further, those texts which attempted this topic have failed to give sufficient examples for successful implementation, thus supporting the operating engineers&apos; lament that it is easy to discuss theories but difficult to show applications. This text is intended to bridge this gap. Examples of the various stages of the analysis portion of the mine planning flowchart shown in Fig. 1 will be covered in this text, with the exception of the Service support system, since this system is oriented more toward day-to-day planning than long-term mine planning. INTERNATIONAL STANDARDIZATION The benefits that can be derived from an international standardization of the units used in mining engineering calculations are numerous. The interchange- ability of equipment parts and the ability to analyze and compare performance and design specifications on an equal basis are just two of the goals desired by both manufacturers and mine operators. Unfortunately, conversion to an international standard has not been rapidly achieved by engineers in the United States, due to their training under the English system. The Society of Mining Engineers of AIME has made the commitment for the adoption of the Systeme International d&apos;Unites (SI) in all mining engineering calculations. Since many practicing mining engineers and students in undergraduate programs still find difficulty in relating to SI units, the calculations in this textbook will use the English system, with Table 1 available for conversion into SI units.

Introduction Caverns of 50 m in linear dimension at depths below 2300 m with a life of more than 25 years are proposed for the next generation of water-filled neutrino detectors. Little precedent exists for excavations in such an extreme environment, although some guidance is available from mining experience at great depths, for example, in South Africa, in Canada and at the former Homestake Mine in the U.S.A. Unlike mining for ore, there are choices available in the construction of such caverns that may mean the difference between success and failure. These choices should be informed by rock engineering principles. Recently proposed guidelines for orientation of brick-shaped caverns where the long dimension is a small multiple of the short dimension indicate that the most favorable orientation is with the long and short dimensions parallel to major and minor preexcavation principal stresses (Pariseau, 2005). Numerical analyses at reduced strength indicate some yielding at cavern walls should be expected but that an equilibrium state is quite possible and is aided by arching the back into a spherical dome when the cavern is an empty cylinder (Tesarik and others, 2002). The same indications of stability occur with brick-shaped caverns. However, the most dangerous situation occurs during the excavation sequence to final cavern dimensions. There are any number of excavation sequences that lead to the same final cavern shape, so there is an opportunity to partially optimize the sequence with construction guidelines that minimize peak stress concentrations during construction. This contribution discusses three practical excavation sequences that lead to the same brick-shaped cavern in the strong, massive Yates formation at the Homestake Mine where considerable rock mechanics data has accumulated through the years(e.g., Pariseau, 1985, Pariseau and others, 1995) and where actual mining on the 8000 Level indicates a strong possibility of successful investment in the next generation of large, deep neutrino detectors. The main results are: (1) a favorable brick-shape is one with dimensions in the same proportion as the preexcavation principal stresses (compressionpositive), and (2) favorable orientation of the most extreme but temporary shape of excavation is also best for the construction sequence. Analysis results from a mix of Homestake Mine data and possible excavation geometry illustrate the advantages of these guidelines.

A new generation of hydraulic efficient pumper and auxiliary impeller designs is the result of an extensive research program focused on improving the overall performance of optimized SX/EW plants. Combined with the proper scale-up, these optimized designs will greatly reduce aqueous and organic entrainment losses, reduce or eliminate air entrainment and crud formation, enhance mass-transfer and maximize the overall copper yield. Currently, these new pumper and auxiliary impellers are installed full-scale in numerous plants ranging in flow rates from 90 to 15000 G.P.M. and developed heads up to 51 inches. Operational results reported by the independent metallurgist at each processing plant are reporting the lowest entrainment results in the industry. Further R&D has just been completed on a new mixing configuration that separates the systems mixing and pumping requirements. Results from the system pilot test document further improvements in reduction of both chemical entrainment and crud formation, while keeping mass transfer stage efficiencies.

Freely accessible and non-confidential real-life geological data sets from mineral deposits are desirable for the wide range of applications in research and education. However, publicly available statistical data are limited in their number and quality—they contain reduced information about geological, geophysical, geotechnical, chemical, mineralogical, and other relevant properties of deposits. This makes such data insufficient for scientific purposes. However, the amount of geological knowledge obtained for a variety of deposits in the past allows the construction of an idealized synthetic ore body model using analytical approach. Such a model could be used for education purposes and testing basic scientific theories, e.g., visualization of deposit structure; teaching sampling strategies; testing new algorithms for mine planning; or comparing geostatistical modeling methods. This paper presents an analytical approach to simulate volcanic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits and shows how synthetic deposit model can be constructed and further used for studying sampling with drilling and simulating folding and faulting.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc.’s Betze open pit is located at the north end of the Carlin Trend, in Eureka County, NV. Ten open pit gold mines exist on the trend, which strikes northwesterly, through the north end of Eureka County and into Elko County (Fig. 1). The final pit will be about 2440 m long x 1550 m wide (8000 x 5100 ft), elongate in a west-northwesterly direction and about 425 m (1400 ft) deep. The pit straddles the Barrick-Newmont Gold Co. property boundary. History The first hole at the Goldstrike Mine was drilled in 1962. Between 1963 and 1964, 17 shallow holes were drilled with little encouragement, in view of the price of gold at $1.12/g ($35/oz). From 1962 to 1975, several different companies explored the Goldstrike property. In 1975, Pancana Industries acquired the property. At the Fort Knox Mine, Fairbanks, Alaska, carbon fines are generated during stripping, acid washing and kiln regeneration operations. Because of their gold value, carbon fines are collected by a filter press. Samples of the carbon fines show that they consist of 20% to 30% carbon, 70% to 80% grit and 0.17 to 0.68 g/kg (5.0-19.9 oz/st) gold. About 80% of the gold values in the carbon fines used in this study are in the form of recrystallized free gold grains, with the balance being the adsorbed gold on the carbon. High recoveries of gold and carbon were obtained from the fines in laboratory tests using froth flotation, with a high rejection of the grit. More than 95% of gold and 90% of carbon can be recovered by three stages of gold flotation followed by two stages of carbon flotation. Key words: Gold recovery, Activated carbon, Flotation
