The use of ozone as an oxidant for the direct leaching of zinc sulfide (sphalerite) concentrate in sulfuric acid medium under atmospheric pressure was explored. The influence of acid concentration, feed gas injection rate, particle size distribution, stirring speed, temperature and slurry density on zinc extraction efficiency was examined. The experimental results showed that the leaching efficiency depends on all of these operating parameters except for stirring speed. It was found that essentially complete dissolution of zinc from the concentrate with the present method can be achieved in only about seven hours under the conditions of sulfuric acid concentration of 2 mol/L, particle size smaller than 74 µm, slurry density of 50 g/L, stirring speed of 420 rpm and feed gas injection rate of 1 L/min at ambient temperature. The experimental results suggest that the dissolution reactions produce independent elemental sulfur that is readily floated and can be easily separated rather than forming a layer on the surface of the reacted particle, as usually observed in a system with ferric-sulfate as oxidizing agent. It was therefore determined that the dissolved ozone play a key role in improving the rate of zinc dissolution from the concentrate. Analysis of the leaching kinetics indicate that the leaching rate follows the shrinking particle model, and the overall dissolution rate of zinc is controlled by a surface reaction.

Autogenous grinding, broadly defined as the self-comminution of ore in a cylindrical tumbling mill without using auxiliary grinding media, was first applied in the early thirties in the so-called Hadsel mills (Figure 1) mainly used in gold mines on the U.S. West Coast. A number of these mills were built in sizes of 20 to 24 ft. in diameter and five-six feet in length but were later abandoned because of operating and maintenance problems. Further development of autogenous grinding led to the Hardinge wet grinding mill (Figure 2), the Aerofall dry grinding mill and others. A tabulation of all known autogenous and semi-autogenous installations around the world was sent recently to the authors by Hr. G. J. Kushner of the Koppers Mineral Processing Division. In the size range of 24 to 32-ft. in diameter, it lists a total of thirty mills used in the processing of copper ores. An additional 120 units are listed in the same size range for the processing of iron ores and other minerals. The largest mills in existence are 36-ft. dia X 15-ft. long mills in Minnesota, powered by 12,000 hp. motors and used in taconite beneficiation. It is indicative of the phenomenal growth of this technology that none of the above one hundred and fifty mills was in operation prior to 1964.

Introduction Pegasus Gold's Montana Tunnels mine is a large surface gold, silver, lead, and zinc mine located 37 km (23 miles) south of Helena in southwestern Montana. Milling operations commenced in late March 1987. The concentrator achieved full production in May that year after undergo¬ing several modifications and improvements. Production for 1988 is projected to be 2.48 t ,80,000 oz) of gold, 34.2 t (1.1 million oz) of silver, along with 8.5 kt (9400 st) of lead, and 22.6 kt (25,000 st) of zinc from lead and zinc concentrates. Mill throughput currently averages 11.7 kt/d (12,900 stpd), compared to the origi¬nally designed capacity of 11.3 kt/d (12,500 stpd). Cash production costs, net of bypro¬duct revenues for the third quarter 1988, were below $3.20/g ($100 per oz). The introduction of ore to the concen¬trator marked the culmination of 12 years ex¬ploration, evaluation, and development. Initial milling operations encountered diffi¬culties with the circuit as designed. As a result, several modifications and improve¬ments were made to the plant. This article is intended to assist other companies developing projects of this type and complexity. It discusses the mine's de¬velopment from feasibility and construction through start-up. The operation, as it exists today, is reviewed including the modifica¬tions and improvements made since start-up. History The mine is situated in Jefferson County, MT within the historic Corbin-Wickes min¬ing district. Underground mining began in 1864 and flourished until the early 1900s. Between 1864 and 1900 the vein deposits in the district produced about $41 million dol¬lars worth of lead and silver ores containing subordinate amounts of zinc, copper, and gold. At various times, three smelters were operated in the area.

Introduction FMC's Paradise Peak gold mine was discovered by staff geologists in July 1983. Located south of Gabbs, in western Nevada, the deposit contains about 11 Mt (12 million st) of ore grading at 3.6 g/t (0.105 oz per st) of gold and 129 g/t (3.75 oz per st) silver. It is estimated that the ore contains 34 t (1.1 million oz) of recoverable gold and 933 t (30 million oz) of recoverable silver. The 3.6 kt/d (4000 stpd) mill began operation April 14, 1986, just 18 months after Davy McKee completed a feasibility study and construction, and two-and-a-months ahead of schedule. It also came in about 10% under budget at a cost of about $100 million. Crushing Run-of-mine ore is delivered from the mine in 45-t (50-st) haul trucks to a 272-kt (300,000-st) capacity open air stockpile. Ore is reclaimed using 5 m3 (7 cu yd) front-end loaders that feed a 91-t (100-st) hopper equipped with a 610- x 610-mm (24- x 24-in.) grizzly. A 1.4- x 11-m (54-in. x 35-ft) apron feeder delivers ore from the hopper by way of a vibrating grizzly screen with 127 mm (5 in.) openings to a 1- x 1.3-m (43- x 51-in.) Rexnord jaw crusher. Crushed material is conveyed to a 1.8- x 4-m (6- x 14-ft) Link Belt vibrating screen equipped with a 50-mm (2-in.) manganese grizzly bar deck. Screen oversize is fed to a 1.7/0.6-m (5.5 ft) Rexnord standard cone crusher. Product from this crusher joins the -50 mm (-2 in.) screen undersize and is conveyed to a 136-t (150-st) surge bin. Three hydraulically driven belt feeders deliver ore from the ore bin to three 2 x 6 m (7 x 20 ft) Link Belt single-deck tertiary screens fitted with 6 x 25 mm (0.25 x 1 in.) slotted polyethylene screens. Screen undersize - -6 mm (-0.25 in.) rock - is conveyed to a 3.6-kt (4000-st) ore storage bin. Screen oversize is delivered by way of a conveyor to a 91-t (100-st) surge bin. From this bin, two belt feeders feed ore to two 1.7 m (66 in.) Rexnord Gyradisc crushers, which are in closed circuit with the tertiary screens. Design features include magnetic protection for tramp iron removal and sloping floors and pump sumps for ease of clean up. Dust scrubbers keep the working environment clean and in compliance with state dust emission regulations. Grinding Two 1 x 4.5 m (3.5 x 15 ft) belt feeders deliver ore from the fine ore bin to a conveyor belt that feeds it to the 5 x 7 m (16 x 22 ft) Allis-Chalmers ball mill. The conveyor belt is equipped with a Merrick weightometer. This controls feed rate to the ball mill by speed control on the hydraulic motors driving the feeders. The 2.6 MW (3500 hp) powered mill grinds 3.6 kt/a (4000 stpd) to an average grind of 85% -75 µm (-200 mesh). The mill is in closed circuit with four 660 mm (26 in.) Krebs cyclones. Three of these are normally in operation while one is a standby. Warman pumps feed the cyclones through a cyclone distribution manifold. The cyclone underflow returns to the ball mill, which has a 300% average circulating load. Mill discharge pH is 11, and that is obtained through pebble lime addition to the feed belt. Cyclone overflow is sampled using a Heath & Sherwood two-stage sampler. It then flows to a 27-m-diam (90-ft-diam) Eimco thickener. Thickener overflow is returned to the grinding circuit, while underflow at 50% solids is pumped to the leaching circuit. Grinding-circuit design features include a steeply sloped floor for ease of clean up, an open area over the pumps for maintenance accessibility, and a ball hopper with a self discharge bottom to speed ball addition. Other features include a mill liner handler and an air clutch that connects the mill motor to the mill.

A great amount of work in recent years has been devoted to refining older survivorship models, e.g. life tables, and developing newer ones, e.g. Cox regression. In this paper, these models are applied to data from an epidemiological study of uranium miners in four western states conducted by the U.S. Public Health Service. One of the principal problems addressed in this paper concerns the appropriateness of using cumulative dose as the measure of radiation exposure. An alternative is considered that incorporates dose rate into the model. This procedure does not implicity assume that equal cumulative doses produce the same lung cancer mortality, but instead considers the amount of time in which each miner's dose was accumulated. Results of the statistical analysis indicate that dose rate is a significant factor at higher cumulative dose levels, with lower dose rate apparently more damaging than higher dose rate. The shape of the dose response curve is curvilinear at higher dose levels. No interaction was found between smoking and radiation exposure on a multiplicative or relative scale.

The treatment of materials for the recovery of the precious metals imposes many processing and environmental challenges. Sunshine Mining and Refining Company has developed hydrometallurgical technology for recovery of values from refractory precious metal materials. At Sunshine, the industrial focus of these processes has been for the direct recovery of silver without cyanidation. However, recent work has indicated that these technologies can provide a means for treating complex, refractory gold concentrates. This will be the focus of this paper. The practice of pretreating ores and concentrates to make them more amenable to cyanidation is becoming more common. Several pretreatment options for sulfide concentrates containing gold include roasting, bio-leaching, direct pressure oxidation and nitrogen species catalyzed pressure oxidation. The industrial use of nitrogen species catalyzed pressure oxidation has been limited to the Sunshine refinery where its focus has been for the treatment of silver concentrates. Much of the reluctance, outside of Sunshine, to use this type of technology may be based on the perception that high costs are associated with using nitrogen species (e.g. nitric acid, sodium nitrite) to leach. Also, the use of nitrogen species catalyzed pressure oxidation on an industrial scale is unfamiliar to most metallurgical professionals. A summary of pressure leaching processes which utilize nitrogen species as a catalyst is presented in Tables 1 and 2.

Pittsburgh #8 coal cleaned by the conventional froth flotation was oxidized in a 2-liter Parr Stirred Top Bench Reactor. The oxidation time was varied up to 5 hours; the temperature, from 150 to 225°C, the oxygen pressure, from 15 to 500 psi; and coal dosage, from 15 to 60 grams in 600 ml of distilled water. The oxidation of coal was evaluated by measuring total acidic group formed on the coal surface as well as by measuring the adsorption of calcium ion from a solution under standard conditions. It was found that the oxidation increased with increasing oxygen pressure without much leveling-off effect. However, the oxidation of coal increased sharply from 150°C to 175°C and then tended to level off above 175°C. The adsorption of calcium was reached more than 3% on the coal oxidized under favorable conditions. The adsorption of calcium on coal increased sharply with increasing equilibrium pH. The BTU loss was sensitive to oxidation temperature. This study concludes that the optimum oxidation of coal should be conducted at high oxygen pressures around (e.g. 500 psi) 170°C for 3 hours. This study also concludes that the oxidation in an autoclave is far superior to that in a fluidized bed in terms of calcium adsorption, BTU loss and reaction time.

"INTRODUCTION The Butte district of Montana is well-known as one of the biggest historic producers of copper in the world. It is also a classic example of a porphyry Cu-Mo system that has been overprinted by zoned, polymetallic (Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag) lode mineralization. After copper, silver was the next most important metal mined from Butte, with over 700 million ounces of total Ag production between 1880 and the present day. Although many papers have been written on the mineralogy of the early porphyry Cu-Mo mineralization and the high-grade Cu-rich lodes in the center of the district, relatively little information exists on the mineralogy of silver in Butte. The purpose of this paper is to summarize past and present silver production trends for the district, and to combine previously published work with new research to examine the mineralogy of silver in the Butte mining district. BUTTE HISTORIC SILVER PRODUCTION According to a recent USGS compilation1, Butte is one of the most Ag-rich porphyry deposits in the world, both in terms of average Ag grade (8.6 g/ton) and total production + reserves (Fig. 1). It is also the 2nd biggest Ag-producing mining district in the U.S. (after the Couer d’Alene district, Idaho). Annual silver and copper production data for the Butte district, compiled from various sources2,3,4, are summarized in Figure 2. Peak production of Ag and Cu was in 1917. While Ag production gradually declined in the ensuing decades, Cu production remained strong until the years leading up to the closure of the Berkeley Pit in 1982. In 1984, mining of the nearby Continental Pit resumed under a different operator, and continues to the present day. The Continental mine produced an average of 35,000 metric tons Cu and 575,000 oz Ag per year between 1984 and 20044. These figures do not take into account a period of mine closure in 2001-2003 due to an unexpected hike in utility prices. The long-term decline in Ag/Cu ratio of ore mined in Butte (Figure 3) is due to several factors, including: 1) changes in metal prices; 2) a downwards decrease in Ag/Cu ratio of most of the lodes with depth below surface; and 3) a shift in mining methods from selective underground mining of high-grade veins to open-pit mining of the bulk rock."

During the gold cyanidation process, cyanide can be lost from the leachate by various chemical routes. The products of these cyanide losses include base metal cyanide complexes, thio­cyanate and cyanate. These losses are particularly important when treating pyritic or cupriferous ores since the two most sig­nificant cyanic ides, in order of importance, are sulfides and cop­per bearing minerals (I). Cyanidation of pyritic minerals results in the formation of thiocyanate. The problems caused by cyanide soluble copper minerals are well known to the gold processing industry and have been reviewed by several authors (e.g. 2, 3). An important consider­ation, especially with a number of more recent leaching tech­nologies, is the effect of the CN :Cu mole ratio, R, on the gold leaching kinetics. In order to efficiently leach cupriferous ores, it is important that R is maintained at a level that allows suffi­ciently rapid leaching without excessive use of cyanide. The optimum value for R in a fixed leaching system would appear to lie between 3 and 4. This is based on the early observations that the leaching rate is very slow when R is below 3, with a rapid increase in the leaching rate above 3 (2, 3,4). The leaching rate increases gradually when R is greater than 4 (4). The major Cu(I)-cyanide complex in this range of R values is the [Cu(CN)J]2· species. It has been postulated that leaching occurs due to either uncomplexed cyanide or the fourth ligand in [Cu(CN)4]3·, since the stepwise formation constant for this complex is very small (2, 3). An additional consideration when leaching cupriferous ores is the oxidation of cyanide by Cu(II) minerals, resulting in the formation of cyanate. It has also been reported that both sulfide minerals (5) and activated carbon (6, 7) catalyse the oxidation of cyanide to cyanate. From the above discussion, it is important for the leaching con­ditions to be carefully controlled when treating pyritic and cuprifer­ous ores in order to achieve efficient and economically viable leach­ing. For example, large concentrations of thiocyanate in the leachate would reveal large cyanide losses and thus indicate the need for a pretreatment step to oxidize the sulfides. Alternatively, a low R value would indicate slow leaching kinetics and consequent low gold recoveries, indicating the need for increased cyanide dosage.

Experiments were done to determine if a mushroom compost-based sulfate reduction system could be used to treat nickel-contaminated mine waters. Sulfate reduction systems were established in columns containing acid-washed mushroom compost. Simulated mine waters containing 2000 mg/L sulfate and 50 to 1000 mg/L nickel were adjusted to pH 4.5 and pumped through the columns at flow rates between 15 and 25 mL/hr. During the first nine days of operation, virtually all influent nickel was removed in the columns by sorption and ion exchange mechanisms. The nickel removal rate then dropped to 18 to 30 mg Ni/day (7.8 to 12.8 nmol/ g-substrate/day), probably due to low sulfate reduction rates. When sodium lactate was added to the inflow, a sustained and seven-fold increase in the nickel removal rate was observed. Bacterial sulfate reduction rates measured in mushroom compost-based wetlands exposed to coal mine drainage are 2 to 20 times faster than the rates observed in this study. Low sulfate reduction rates in the columns may have been due to the inhibition of microbial activity by high nickel concentrations and the removal of labile organic compounds from the mushroom compost substrate during acid-washing. Results of this study indicate that bacterial sulfate reduction can effectively treat nickel concentrations up to 500 mg/L if labile carbon is nonlimiting.

INTRODUCTION Volcanic tuffs on and adjacent to the Nevada Test Site (NTS) are being considered by the Department of Energy (DOE) for the possible geo- logic disposal of high-level radioactive wastes. The Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations (NNWSI) project was established in 1977 to evaluate such disposal. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), one of the participants in the NNWSI project, has as one of its responsibilities the development of a rock mechanics program for the Nevada site. SNL conducted three small-diameter heater experiments in welded and nonwelded tuffs in G-Tunnel on the NTS, to investigate the thermal (heat transfer) and hydrothermal (thermal- induced water migration) behavior as part of the rock mechanics program. These two aspects were investigated to increase knowledge about the behavior of tuff so that predictive capabilities are available for use by repository designers, waste-package designers, and performance analysts. Also, knowledge of the behavior of the tuff is invaluable for planning and designing future in situ experiments at Yucca Mountain, the candidate site for the repository. The evaluations of these three experiments is the subject of this paper. Designers, analysts, and experimenters are seeking a better understanding of the behavior of tuffs under the influence of thermal loads expected from radioactive-waste storage, because of two physical features peculiar to tuffs. First, tuffs are inherently porous because of the manner in which they are deposited (Smith, 1960). Tuffs utilized in G-Tunnel testing have porosities ranging from 15 to 46%, which cover the ranges of expected porosities in the target horizon at Yucca Mountain. It has been established that the G-Tunnel tuffs have similar bulk, thermal, and mechanical material properties to those at Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984), thus, G-Tunnel testing can be used to evaluate the effects of porosity on the thermal and mechanical behavior. The second feature is that tuffs above the water table contain pore water that influences the thermal properties of the rock; displacement of the water must be accounted for in repository designs and analyses. For example, G-Tunnel tuffs, located some 600 m above the static water level, have saturations in excess of 60%. Similar percentages are expected at the target horizon in Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984). The presence of and the removal of the pore water affects the thermal behavior of the tuffs, and these three experiments were designed first to determine the phenomenological behavior and then assess influences on predictive capabilities. The focus in this paper is to present the results and evaluations of the experiments as they apply to improving predictive capabilities. The thermal aspects are emphasized by comparing the measured temperatures (in and around heater emplacement holes) with calculations of predicted temperatures using numerical models, so that the effects of significant parameters can be evaluated and integrated into future predictive models. Observation of the hydrothermal aspects is needed to assess the effects of loss of pore water and subsequent migrations on the temperature fields during the heating, and also to define the expected environment in the vicinity of the outer metallic surface around the waste. The metallic boundary can be either the outer shell of the waste package system, which is the main engineered barrier for waste containment, or the borehole liner. A final decision has not been made as yet about the necessity for lining boreholes; thus, the emphasis is on predicting the characteristics of the environment around the outer metallic surface. Introduction The mining industry is perhaps best characterized by the numerous and abnormally high risks associated with the business of mining and by its most basic assets - ore deposits, people and technology. At the most fundamental level, it is the quality and effective utilization of these basic assets that determine a mining company's ability to compete efficiently in the international market place. The gold industry has received much attention in recent years and especially in recent months, for good reason. This commodity serves as an excellent platform for the subsequent discussion of these three basic assets and their role in mining's future. Facets of the gold industry The fate of this noble metal in recent times illustrates some of the various risks associated with the mining industry and the importance of high-quality assets, whether they be ore deposits, people or technologies. The following comments pertaining to the gold industry help place proper focus on subsequent discussions. All monetary amounts given are in US dollars. Throughout 1997, falling gold prices broke record after record: first hitting three-year lows, then a 12-year low in July and finally an 18-year low at year's end. From Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 1997, the price of gold fell by more than $2.57/g ($80/oz), or some 22%. The decline in gold-mining profitability and stock prices was even more dramatic. At the beginning of 1997, the 20 largest gold producers in North America had a market capitalization of approximately $44.5 billion. At year's end, this market cap had fallen to $26.2 billion, a reduction of 41%. The total market cap of all the world's gold companies fell from $71 billion to $46 billion, a 35% drop (Serwer, 1998). Analyses suggest that, at a spot gold price of $9.65/g ($300/oz), only one, or possibly two, North American gold-producing companies can make money when break-even or "total costs of production" are considered. While strong hedge positions mitigate this situation in the short term, clearly, this is an industry in desperate straits. For example, write-downs for North American producers in 1997 were approximately $2.5 billion. Speculative short positions in 1997 were near historical record highs and generally exceeded long positions by factors of 9:1 or 10:1. Much of this is driven by some US commercial banks, hedge fund managers and commodity speculators who can significantly move gold prices sharply over short periods of time by selling gold they do not own in the expectation they can buy it back at a lower price before they have to deliver. These signifcant short positions are likely to continue as long as central banks are willing to sell or loan gold to financial institutions that in turn make the gold available to speculators who hope to capitalize on price fluctuations. The Far East accounts for approximately 26% of the annual demand for gold. Including India, the region accounts for 43% of total demand. More than 85% of the physical demand for gold is for investment jewelry in Asia and the Middle East. This demand is extraordinarily price sensitive. The fairly recent turmoil in Asian markets and economies, combined with currency devaluations throughout the region, have made gold more expensive (30% to 50% in local currencies) for those peoples most likely to treat gold as a safe investment haven. Higher interest rates also have reduced the amount of money they have to spend on consumer goods such as jewelry. All of these recent Asian events are deflationary in nature. Philippines is a country that is richly endowed in mineral wealth. In 1988, Climax Arimco Mining Corp. (CAMC) geologists found the Dinkidi porphyry gold-copper deposit in Nueva Vizcaya province. It is the most significant mineral discovery in that country in recent times. To date, the company has defined indicated resources of 124 Mt (136 million st) of 1-g/t (0.029-oz/st) gold and 0.4% copper. This includes a high-grade core of 7.9 Mt (8.7 million st) of 6-g/t (0.175-oz/st) gold equivalent. Total contained metal is 124.4 t (4 million oz) of gold and 499 kt (1.1 billion lb) of copper. Dinkidi's discovery resulted from initial geologic reconnaissance and recognition of the intrusive complex that is exposed at surface and anomalous in its topographic expression. This was followed by systematic exploration. This includes extensive gradient array induced polarization (IP), ground magnetics, geochemical sampling and diamond drilling. This later defined a further 16 satellite porphyry targets in the Didipio region. Climax was been granted a Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement contract with the Philippine government. It allows 100% foreign ownership of mining projects. After four years of negotiations, Climax was the first company to have such an application granted. Some 120 applications from numerous international mining companies are waiting for approval following implementation of new Philippine Mining Act of 1995. Exploration history Didipio is located 200 km (125 miles) north of Manila at an elevation of about 700 m (2,300 ft) in the remote Sierra Madre mountains. This region remains mostly unexplored. The property is accessed by 25 km (15 miles) of logging track from the town of Cabarroguis, Quirino. The area experiences an average rainfall of about 3,000 mm (118 in.) a year. Most of it falls during the July-to-November typhoon season. Didipio was first recognized as a gold province in the 1970s when native Ifugao and Ilongot hunters discovered alluvial gold in the region. The region had been prospected over the years by local companies. They were mostly prospecting for alluvial gold. However, in 1988, Climax Mining geologists identified the potential of an obscure razorback ridge protruding from the alluvial valley floor. This ridge, later named Dinkidi by Climax, was the site of several small- scale tunnels. Locals had mined narrow quartz stockwork veining and sluiced soft argillic alteration zones, using irrigation canals and sluice boxes to catch free gold.

The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH OMSHR) conducted laboratory testing of a self-tramming, remotely controlled mobile Dry Scrubber (DS) that J.H. Fletcher and Co. developed under a contract with NIOSH OMSHR to reduce the exposure of miners to airborne dust. The scrubber was found to average greater than 95 percent dust removal efficiency with disposable filters, and 88 and 90 percent, respectively, with optional washable filters in their prewash and post-wash test conditions. Although the washable filters can be reused, washing them generated personal and downstream respirable dust concentrations of 1.2 and 8.3 mg/m3, respectively, for a 10-min washing period. The scrubber’s velocity-pressure-regulated variablefrequency- drive fan maintained relatively consistent airflow near the targeted 1.42 and 4.25 m3/s (3,000 and 9,000 ft3/min) airflow rates during most of the laboratory dust testing until reaching its maximum 60-Hz fan motor frequency or horsepower rating at 2,610 Pa (10.5 in. w.g.) of filter differential pressure and 3.97 m3/s (8,420 ft3/min) of scrubber airflow quantity. Laboratory sound level measurements of the scrubber showed that the outlet side of the scrubber was noisier, and the loaded filters increased sound levels compared with clean filters at the same airflow quantities. With loaded filters, the scrubber reached a 90 dB(A) sound level at 2.83 m3/s (6,000 ft3/min) of scrubber airflow, indicating that miners should not be overexposed in relation to MSHA’s permissible exposure level — under Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 62.101— of 90 dB(A) at or below this airflow quantity. The scrubber’s washable filters were not used during field-testing because of their lower respirable dust removal efficiency and the airborne dust generated by filter washing. Field-testing the scrubber with disposable filters at two underground coal mine sections showed that it could clean a portion of the section return air and provide dust reduction of about 50 percent at the face area downstream of the continuous-miner operation.

Rhodes Mining NL, Perth, Australia, is developing the Lahoca Gold Project which is located in Hungary, about 30 km from the town of Eger. The preliminary resource is estimated to contain approximately 1.5 million ounces of gold. The project is being evaluated for an annual process capacity of 2 million tonnes. The test samples contain just over 2 g Ault and 6% sulfur as sulfide. Copper and arsenic levels are approximately 0.2 and 0.1 %, respectively. The ore is refractory due to submicroscopic gold occurrences and structural associations with pyrite. A small amount of the gold is finely encapsulated in quartz. Approximately 30% of the gold in the crushed ore is soluble in cyanide and up to about 55% is cyanide-recoverable with ultra­fine grinding. The ore has little preg-robbing ability. Metallurgical test work done by Colorado Minerals Research Institute (CMRI) and other investigators has shown that as much as 85 to over 90% of the gold was recovered by the relatively severe conditions of pressure oxidation or roasting of the whole ore or a flotation concentrate. The Lahoca ore responds to flotation with gold recoveries of 87% into a low grade concentrate. Subsequently, with a view toward defining a process route with potentially more attractive economics, Rhodes Mining and CMRI conducted an extensive review of biooxidation technologies and concluded that, in particular, heap biooxidation methods promised lower process costs which normally are associated with heap leaching. Based on the study, which included the analysis of the closely related practices of copper dump/heap bioleaching now well established in that industry, CMRI conducted simulated heap biooxidation experiments which evaluated factors such as ultra fine ore crushing, agglomeration techniques, heap design, forced aeration oxygen supply, and whether or not the heap is irrigated. Separate flask biooxidation tests at Little Bear Laboratories showed that the finely crushed ore is biooxidized readily, with a near linear relationship between sulfide oxidation and gold cyanide solubility. Gold recoveries of as high as 66% have resulted after biooxidation of crushed ore. This paper highlights the metallurgical developments of the Lahoca project, and focuses on recent biooxidation laboratory test work aimed at enhancing the treatment of crushed ore.

INTRODUCTION The term "dewatering" refers to removal of water from coal. Water associated with coal can be categorized as "free or surface" and "inherent or chemically bound" moisture.' The free moisture is found on the surface of coal, in capillaries and small spaces between two or more particles. The inherent or chemically bound water is found in the interior of the coal and as part of coal structure. A significant amount of free moisture can be removed by mechanical dewatering techniques. However, inherent moisture can only be removed by applying energy intensive techniques, e.g., direct or indirect heating. Moisture in the coal offsets some of the benefits of coal cleaning. Extra water in clean coal adds to extra cost in transportation, heat lost during vaporization, and plugging of chutes. From a utility perspective, a 1 % increase in moisture can offset a 4.5% decrease in ash.2 Mechanical dewatering can be classified into two major process categories according to the principles involved, namely, 1. Sedimentation-liquid is constrained and particles move freely. 2. Filtration-particles are constrained by a medium and the liquid flows through. Each of the process categories is composed of various separation techniques shown in Fig. Equipment currently being used by the mechanical dewatering of coal of varying size ranges and final moisture content is illustrated in Fig. 8-2. This figure indicates that sizes larger than 13/, in. (37.5 mm) present no particular dewatering problem. Shaker screens of the very crudest types and designs are capable of producing these sizes at low surface moistures. High-speed vibrators are used for the intermediate sizes and can be used for smaller sizes down to 0.02 in. (0.5 mm) if high moistures (15% surface moisture or greater) can be tolerated in the product. Usually, however, the vibrator is not used below 3/, to 3/, in. (9.5 to 6.3 mm) because of the moisture associated with these fine sizes. At this level, centrifugal force is usually employed to aid dewatering. For the third successive year it appears that demand for platinum will exceed supplies of newly-mined metal, forecasts Johnson Matthey in its "Platinum 1987 Interim Review." Based on data available at the end of August 1987, Johnson Matthey estimates that western world demand for platinum could exceed 93t (3 million oz) for the first time ever in 1987. Given a likely increase in demand of 4.3t to around 94t (140,000 oz to around 3.02 million oz), up by about 5% over 1986, there would be a 1.8- to 2.2-t (60,000- to 70,000-oz) shortfall in 1987 supply. South African mines enjoying undisrupted production last year after strikes affected Impala's output in 1986. The rate of increases in western world supplies, though, has probably not kept pace with the growth in demand. A downturn in US demand for platinum was counterbalanced by substantially increased purchases from Japanese and Western European consumers of the metal. Total imports of platinum into Japan in 1987 may have reached a record level of 45t (1.45 million oz). The largest source of demand for platinum remains its use in autocatalysts US and Japanese auto manufacturers reduced their platinum purchases in the wake of falling car production. Therefore, a small decline in overall 1987 sales of perhaps 780 kt (25,000 oz) was expected in 1987. Western European demand, however, rose strongly as a result of increased output. The spread of exhaust emission control regulations has sharply boosted the number of cars equipped with three-way catalysts containing platinum and rhodium. Western European auto makers probably needed 5.6t (180,000 oz) of platinum last year, a 50% increase over 1986. The jewelry industry, the second largest user of platinum, increased its offtake of platinum in 1987. Japan, the key to the jewelry industry's consumption of platinum, could absorb 24.8 to 26.4 (800,000 to 850,000 oz) in 1987, compared with 23t (740,000 oz) in 1986. Platinum has wide and diverse applications in industry. Other major users are the chemical, glass, electronics and petroleum industries. They were expected to increase their aggregate demand by about 1.8t (60,000 oz), or 11% in 1987. Investment demand for small platinum bars and coins of up to 311g (10 oz) dropped back in relatively inhospitable conditions. This, after rapid increases in recent years and a surge in US demand in 1986. However, Japanese investors purchasing bars weighing 500g or 1 kg (16 to 32 oz), and considered more speculative, recovered last year. Over the first eight months of 1987, platinum performed strongly on the open market with average prices well up from 1986 in dollar terms. But the increase was less marked where measured in sterling or yen. Platinum ad¬vanced by $3.70/g ($115 per oz) between Jan. 1 and mid-September with the average price having been surpassed only in the heady days of 1980. Johnson Matthey believes that supply and demand appear likely to keep more or less in step on a gently rising path. The recent open market volatility will continue with prices fluctuating widely over short periods. Writing in mid-September, and basing its view on the tangible evidence of platinum's price fall since the review was written, the company's assessment of price prospects is unchanged. Demand for platinum remains strong all-round. In October, imports of platinum into Japan were exceptionally high. And in the US and Japan there was a marked resurgence of demand from private investors. Although market sentiment may have been influenced in part by the news of several potential new platinum mines in South Africa, the full effects of these prospects on supply, even if they were all to materialize, would not be felt before the early-mid 1990s, Johnson Matthey said. According to the review, no radical change in platinum supplies is discernible in the near-term. Incremental growth from South Africa can be expected as the major producers continue to make the most of their existing resources. The Soviet Union may be keener to sell than it appeared earlier in 1987, especially if prices hold up, but a substantial increase is improbable. Canadian supplies are not capable of much variation from present levels. The palladium-rich Stillwater mine will make a modest contribution. Referring to the investment market, Johnson Matthey concluded that despite this year's reduction in sales of small-denomination investment products, platinum does appear to have established itself with private investors. Bearing in mind how business multiplied in comparatively unfavorable conditions before 1986, it is reasonable to look for a resumption of growth once the climate improves.

A number of state and federal agencies are calling for development of aquatic life criteria for conductivity. These aquatic life criteria or ?benchmarks? are based on observed correlations between conductivity and benthic macroinvertebrate community composition, generally measured by composite metrics or indices. However, development of an aquatic life criterion for a composite variable like conductivity is made difficult by a number of factors. Based on a database from West Virginia, observed patterns of invertebrate community composition versus conductivity may instead be related to a combination of abiotic (e.g., ionic composition, habitat) and biotic (e.g., life history, colonization potential) factors. Many benthic invertebrate taxa also do not respond to increasing conductivity in a consistent relationship. Many states have determined that a composite variable, like conductivity or TDS, is not appropriate for criteria development, as many studies have shown that toxicity varies as a function of ion composition and can be mitigated by elevated hardness. We conclude that the relationships between conductivity and changes in benthic macroinvertebrate community composition are neither strong nor reliable enough to warrant derivation of a criterion based solely on conductivity.

One of the challenges of mining is the concentration of heavy metals it releases into the environment through a phenomenon called Acid Mine Drainage. Freiberg is no exception due to its long mining activities. The European Union proposes that all rivers and streams must be in a good ecological status by the year 2027 but this would be difficult for large water sources as it would be economically unviable. Consequently, the approach of treating these waters at point sources would be of immense help and hence this column experiment on mine water treatment with carbon sorbents to remove zinc form the Rothschönberger Stolln. For this experiment three resins namely, APTsorb, activated coke, charred fermentation residues (which was produced by the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology) were analyzed through a simple column experiment to determine their sorption capacities. Through their sorption capacity as this experiment seeks to ascertain: we are able to make suggestions scientifically on the best material among the three for the future design of a treatment plant for the RSS. After the experiment whereby a 10 ml peri glass column was used, material A: APTsorb showed the least adsorption capacity (0.01 meq/g) and this could be attributed to the fact that the resin works well under pre-determined parameters such as pH and surface area. Material B: Activated coke showed a better sorption capacity (0.53 meq/g) in comparison to the basis value used for this experiment. Material C: charred fermentation residue which was produced by the University showed the most efficient capacity of (1.69 meq/g). This in comparison with the value used as the basis for this experiment showed that material C (charred fermentation residue) is very efficient for zinc sorption. pH values measured at the effluent of all the experiment were slightly higher than the pH measured in the initiating water.
