A computer model has been developed at Consolidation Coal Co.'s Central Engineering Dept. for preliminary economic evaluation of deep coal mine reserves. Since it was first formulated more than two years ago, the model has been used for the following purposes: (1) ranking studies of coal exploration projects, (2) marketing surveys, (3) preliminary sale and acquisition analysis of coal reserves, and (4) parametric analysis in conjunction with detailed feasibility studies.

The rate of adsorption of gold cyanide on activated charcoal was examined as a function of charcoal concentration and size, temperature, initial gold concentration, pH, and initial concentration of gold on the charcoal. Drillability of rocks by mechanical means is closely related to the physical properties of the respective rocks, Various approaches by previous investigators on rock drillability are presented, as well as recent techniques studied by the Bureau of Mines. The studies show drillability concepts based on (1) theoretical drilling equations derived from laboratory drilling experiments extended to field drilling results and on (2) a statistical method where multiple regression analysis is used to develop a prediction equation for drillability.

The fundamentals behind a novel approach for creating inorganic/polymer hybrids are described. The binding of +2 charged ions, specifically Cue-and Cat+, to ionic functional groups is explored through UV-Vis spectroscopy and zeta potential measurements. The novel approach uses an electric field to drive ions into a functionalized polymeric matrix, thereby inducing the precipitation of calcium phosphate species. Scanning electron microscopy images of the resulting composite illustrate the results of these precipitations with two distinct morphologies observed.

A flotation process has been developed to successfully treat ore from the Santo Domingo phosphate deposit in Baja California Sur. The ore contained less than 4% P2O5 with quartz, silicates, and carbonates as gangue minerals. Flotation of the low- grade feed in seawater required that the conventional Crago process, comprising direct anionic flotation, deoiling, and inverse cationic flotation, be augmented by an anionic cleaner flotation step, phosphate depression, and a calcite flotation step.

The ability of conveyor belts to transport large mass throughputs economically over previously unprepared ground has resulted in this system achieving great and extensive use. A significant component in this development is the conveyor belt itself. The development of high strength steel cord conveyor belts involves the optimising of splice design, the use of excellent rubber material especially in the splice, good craftsmanship during splice production and modern field vulcanisation equipment. The durability of a splice for belts of class St 3000 up to St 790 is expressed by the fatigue strength under dynamic stress. The results obtained with a test method and equipment developed by the University of Hannover indicate the present state of the art in this field. Belts of high nominal strength used on inclined long distance conveyors reach splice fatigue strengths of about 3000 N/mm. The design should only exploit approximately 50% of the fatigue strength determined in the tests as maximum operating stress. IMPORTANCE OF CONVEYOR BELT SYSTEMS The use of conveyor belt technology has expanded considerably over the last decades in the bulk goods transportation sector. Because of the favourable transport costs and the technology's adaptability to specific topographies, belt conveyors frequently represent the most economic solution. When flows of goods are large, as in German lignite mining operations, where masses of up to 40,000 t/h are given, it is the only technically feasible alternative. The use of belt conveyor systems allows the sensible distribution of the waste and the production of the coal (Hager, 1981). But this transportation alternative is also suitable when the masses involved are smaller. Whereas conveyor belts were only suitable for loose bulk goods up until a few years ago, today they are frequently also used for hard rock open cast mines, e.g. in the production of copper ore. Because of the favourable transport costs it is frequently still economic to use mobile crushers with a throughput of up to 10,000 t h 6 which breakdown the large blocks produced y explosives into transportable grain sizes. In many operations, trucks are only used to provide flexibility between the excavator and the crusher, i.e. over short routes, and the long, frequently steep, transport paths to the processing plant or to the spreader are undertaken by belt conveyors (Einenkel et al., 1992). The advantages of belt conveyors, i.e. to cope with large mass flows over inclines and down slopes of up to 1:4 have resulted in this system gaining very extensive use throughout the world. The conveyors can be installed over for the most part unprepared ground with suitable vertical radii, adapted to the locally available belt material. In the process individual conveyor belts with lengths of up to 15 km, and in the underground sector with lift heights of up to 1 km, have been built and operated. This great variety of application possibilities is complemented by a limited ability to pass through horizontal curves. This can be achieved with the help of design measures on the conveyor whilst bearing in mind the characteristics of the belt. STRESSING OF CONVEYOR BELTS IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF PLANT The advantage of conveyor belts compared with other systems is also to be found in the large available service-time window, i.e. the excellent reliability and the low costs of energy consumption and maintenance. It is in particular the reliability of a belt transport system which depends to a great degree on its main component, that is the belt - in all its different types and variations. For this reason, the belt is also given the greatest attention in the development of the individual components, because it is the belt which must be designed optimally with regard to various factors. Stillwater Mining Co. (SMC) is the largest primary producer of platinum and palladium in North America. SMC operates two underground mines in south central Montana, along the 45-km (28-mile) platinum/palladium J-M Reef in the Stillwater Complex. The Stillwater Mine exploits 9.6 km (6 miles) of deposit strike length and East Boulder Mine exploits 4 km (2.5 miles) of deposit length. The two mines are 20.4 km (12.7 miles) apart with SMC controlling a considerable length along the entire J-M Reef trace. Production at the Stillwater Mine began in 1986 and in 1988 the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) was commissioned, becoming an integral part of mine development at SMC. TBMs have been used for developing production footwall laterals (FWL) to access new mining blocks at the Stillwater Mine, as well as boring twin crosscut ac-cess tunnels at the East Boulder. Two TBM development expansion projects are currently in progress: the Graham Creek project at the East Boulder Mine, which will extend footwall lateral development 2,591 m (8,500 ft) to the west, and the Blitz project, where a TBM will be commissioned to extend east out of the Stillwater Mine to 3,658 m (12,000 ft) beyond the current production mining front. General strike and dip of the Reef is west to east and to the north, respectively.

Water spray applications are one of the principal means of controlling airborne respirable dust in coal mines. Since many coals are hydrophobic and not easily wetted by water, wetting agents can be added to the spray water in an effort to improve coal wetting and assist with dust capture. In order to study wetting agent effects on coal dust capture, laboratory experiments were conducted with three wetting agents used by the coal industry on -325 mesh sized Pocahontas No. 3 coal dust. Significant differences in coal dust sinktimes were observed among the three wetting agents at water mixture concentrations of 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2%. The best wetting agent as identified by the coal dust sink test was only tested at the lowest 0.05% water mixture concentration and was found to have a negligible effect on spray airborne dust capture. Water spray airborne dust capture results for all three wetting agents tested at a 0.2% water mixture concentration showed that all three wetting agents exhibit similar but small improvements in dust capture efficiency as compared with water. These results indicate that the coal dust sink test may not be a good predictor for the capture of airborne dust. Additional research is needed to examine if the coal dust sink test is a better predictor of wetting agent dust suppression effects during cutting, loading, conveying, and dumping of coal products by comparison to airborne dust capture from sprays.

Research objectives included 1) determine relationships if any between spectral response of soil and soil textural groups, Unified Soil Classification subgroups and selected landforms and 2) develop computer assisted techniques for engineering soils mapping of remotely sensed data. The sire in northeastern Kansas, 1.6 Km by 43 Km (1.0 mi by 27 mi), contained glacial and alluvial soils. Multispectral scanner data (0.40 to 1.80 pm) collected at 915 meters altitude (3,000 feet) were analyzed using two distinct computer techniques: the nonsupervised approach involving delineation of soil training areas directly by computer and the supervised approach entailing training area selection manually by the researcher. Computer classification of surface materials follows both methods. Non supervised analysis results failed to show a consistant relation- ship between landform type and soil spectral class. Landforms correlating well displayed either unusually bright or unusually dark spectral signatures. Supervised analysis results showed a strong relationship between soil texture and soil spectral class. A moderately strong tie was shown between engineering soils groups (ML, CL, CH and OH) and their respective spectral classes, and a weak association between landform type and soil spectral class. An analysis procedure for engineering soils mapping by computer of remotely sensed data was developed. 1. Locate cultural features by visual examination of imagery. 2. Produce generalized bare soil-vegetation- water map using nonsupervised technique. 3. Outline significant soil fields for computer training using supervised approach. 4. Computer-classify entire area based on these soil fields.

A questionnaire was sent out to three classes of mines to determine the extent of the heat problem in U.S. and Foreign underground mines. The following list shows the replies received from this questionnaire, however not all the known hot mines in the US replied. A complete listing of the results can be seen in Appendix I. 1) US coal mines - 37 replies 2) US non coal mines - 23 replies 3) Foreign non coal mines - 36 replies. At the present time there are approximately eleven non coal and one coal mine in the US experiencing heat problems which require special efforts to maintain an acceptable working place climate. However since the survey was completed some of them have been placed on standby. The Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) does not have any specific regulations relating to heat stress. Informally the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists guidelines are followed which use wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) with values ranging from 26.7°C to 31.1°C for a moderate workload, and different rest regimes. An MSHA report (Misaqi 1976) recommended that conditions should not exceed 26.1°C WBGT for men and 24.4°C WBGT for women. However, quite recently the organizations involved with planning two of the proposed nuclear waste repositories in the United States, have opted for the criteria of an air cooling power of 300 w/m2, and a WBGT of 27'C respectively.

The control of sulfur dioxide and fly ash in the emissions from coal-fired boilers is a significant segment of the national environ- mental protection program. Developing technologies to accomplish this objective presently emphasize aqueous scrubbing techniques. Should circumstances require aqueous scrubbing for fly ash control only, provision must nevertheless be made to counteract the presence of sulfur dioxide which can create an acidic and potentially corrosive environment. Major technologies for sulfur dioxide control by aqueous scrubbing include, l), recovery processes yielding sulfuric acid or elemental sulfur and 2), throw-away processes which produce a sludge consisting essentially of calcium sulfite or varying amounts of calcium sulfate.1/ Recovery processes are more sophisticated and best suited for locations where there are markets for sulfuric acid or sulfur, or where sludge disposal is an overriding consideration. Throw-away processes are generally less sophisticated but have a problem in that gas scrubbing systems may not operate for practical time periods without failures due to corrosion and to plugging by particulates and precipitates. To overcome this difficulty, some throw-away systems employ an aqueous solution of caustic in the gas scrubbing device to assure maximum water solubility of sulfur compounds, followed by the addition of lime to the scrubbing medium in a system external to the scrubber to produce the throw-away sludge and regenerate the caustic for recycle. Such systems are referred to as double alkali systems.2/

The dissolution of gold in cyanide_ leaching has been we11 published with the genera1 acceptance that gold is oxidised by oxygen and stabilized by complexation with cyanide [1]. The dissolution of gold is essentially an electrochemical process. The rate of the anodic gold dissolution is controlled by the cyanide concentration. - (2) While the cathode reduction of oxygen is controlled by dissolved oxygen concentration - (3) There are a number of factors influencing the concentration of oxygen, and if 1owered substanth.lly will effect the efficiency of the leaching plant. These include: "' salinity "' temperature "'partial pressure "'oxygen consumption rate The use of pure oxygen for· cyanidation is only beneficial if oxygen is rate limiting, Conversely a slurry saturated with air (typically 5 - 8 ppm) may not be enough for maximum leach rate. The diagram below shows the maximum dissolved oxygen levels obtainable with pure oxygen and air. DISSOLVED OXYGEN (MAXIMUM) IN WATER At steady state, the rate of the cathodic reaction must equal the rate of the anodic reaction. Thus the rate of gold dissolution is dependent on both the· cyanide and oxygen concentrations. - (4) Using an average of Do/Den =· 1.5 [2] (where Do and Den are the oxygen and cyanide diffusion coefficients) the table below illustrates the maximum effective oxygen concentrations for given cyanide levels in clean water [3].

Blasting generates undesirable ground vibration with adverse effects on humans, the environment, and structures. Numerous studies have used various techniques including machine learning (ML) to predict the peak particle velocity (PPV) caused by blasting in surface mines. These studies used the validation-set approach to evaluate the performance of their predictive models. In this study, Random Forest (RF), Gaussian Process (GP), and Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM) were applied for the prediction of PPV using data from a large open-pit gold mine in Ghana. An ensemble model based on a stacked generalization approach was then built on these three base models to significantly improve the PPV prediction performance. The model evaluation was done using repeated tenfold cross-validation which resolves the challenges with the validationset approach for small datasets. The dataset used in this study comprised a total of 196 measurements taken from different blasting operations. R-squared ( R2 ), mean absolute error (MAE), and root mean square error (RMSE) were used to evaluate the model performance. The results obtained from these models revealed that all the base models did not significantly outperform each other. However, the stacked generalization approach had a better performance, with RMSE = 0.12, R2 = 0.96, and MAE = 0.07. This approach presented an improvement over the existing methods and will be useful for highly accurate predictions of ground vibration during blast design. The application of this model will be useful for efficient and effective blast design.

Heavy mineral mining has been a relatively small but important Florida industry for over sixty years. Geology of the Florida heavy mineral deposits is similar. Each formed along active coastlines after which the titanium minerals were upgraded in TiO2 by post depositional oxidation and leaching of the iron. There are four heavy mineral plants currently Operating in Florida. Ore is mined by dredges and the heavy minerals concentrated by gravity separation. The heavy mineral concentrates are further processed with high tension and electromagnetic separators to Produce titanium mineral concentrates for TiO2 pigment manufacturing plants. Zircon sand is produced as a co-product at all of the Florida plants. Staurolite is produced by Du Pont and Titanium Enterprises. Du Pont also markets a kyanite-sillimanite product. (Monazite is produced by Humphreys and Titanium Enterprises). Reclamation of mined-out land is an important part of heavy mineral mining. At the Du Pont plants soil is removed ahead of the dredge and placed over the quartz sand tailings. Grass is planted after fertilizing. A year later the land is fertilized again and pine trees planted. Most of the heavy mineral deposits now being mined will be nearly exhausted by the end of the century. New deposits to be mined in the 21st century will probably be smaller and lower grade than those now being mined. Advances in mineral processing technology will have to be made to allow these lower grade deposits to be mined economically.

The flotation of diaspore, kaolinite, pyrophyllite, illite and the diaspore-kaolinite mixture were studied with a new cationic organosilicon quaternary ammonium collector entitled QAS222. The acting mechanism of the collector with the four minerals was analyzed by Zeta potential measurement and FT-IR spectrum analysis. The results indicate that the QAS222 was effective in the reverse flotation of the diaspore-bauxite mixture of different Al2O3 -to-SiO2 mass ratios (A/S ratio) at an optimum pulp pH of 11. The potentials of the four minerals increased when they were conditioned in the QAS222 solution; however, the potentials of the three aluminosilicate minerals increased faster than that of the diaspore, especially at pH>9. Furthermore, they were positive in a wide pH range, indicating that QAS222 has a strong adsorption on the surface of the aluminosilicate minerals and thus that these minerals can be floated. The FT-IR spectra analysis further indicates that, besides electrostatic adsorp-tions, formation of the hydrogen bond and ammonium absorptions, chemical adsorptions occur between QAS222 and the aluminosilicate minerals, which allow for the QAS222 to be strongly adsorbed on the aluminosilicate minerals. However, these reactions between QAS222 and diaspore at pulp pH=11 are weaker than those of the aluminosilicate minerals. Thus, surface adsorptions cannot be formed effectively, resulting in reduced floatability.

Laboratory tests were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the respirable dust reduction effectiveness of and interaction between face airflow and water sprays for a continuous miner. Exhausting face ventilation was varied from 3,000 to 9,000 cfm (1.42 to 4.25 m3/sec). Spray-water-flow was varied from 15 to 35 gpm (0.057 to 0.132 m3/min), while nozzle operating pressure was varied from 80 to 200 psi (5.62 to 14.06 kg/cm2). Results from gravimetric dust samples indicated that airflow had the greatest individual impact on reducing dust levels, with return and operator concentrations reduced by as much as 57% and 99%, respectively. Interactions between dust control parameters were found to be significant. Often, these interactions defined a level of application for a control parameter where further increases in that parameter failed to produce additional reductions in dust concentrations. In several cases, increases in a control parameter resulted in higher dust levels at the operator's location. These higher dust levels were attributed to additional rollback and/or airflow turbulence. Regression modeling indicated that increases in airflow to 8,400 cfm (3.96 m3/sec), water flow to 25 gpm (0.095 m3/min), and water pressure to 140 psi (9.84 kg/cm2) typically were beneficial at the operator and return sampling locations.

G. Campbell The paper by M. Lonoff looks at the importance of byproduct prices on copper production. The paper develops several interesting points on this topic, but there are some points in the theoretical discussion that could use further development. A couple of these theoretical topics will be considered here using the paper's framework of assumptions without concern about how realistic the assumptions are for the copper industry. Lonoff's theoretical model is based on a static, homogenous world where all copper/byproduct deposits are identical, and these deposits are the main source of these metals. Due to the importance of the byproducts to the production decision, the term coproducts will be substituted for the term byproducts to reflect more accurately this condition. The conclusion is drawn that a rise in coproduct prices necessitates a decrease in copper prices because copper production is increased as a consequence of increased coproduct production. The observation that real world behavior does not always follow this pattern is dismissed as "speculation." However, it can be easily shown that within this simple framework market forces might create the observed behavior. The key question to be answered is what causes coproduct prices to rise. Three possible cases will be used as illustrations. The first case is the one implicity assumed by Lonoff. Here, the demand for coproducts increases at all prices (an outward parallel shift of the demand curve) with the demand for copper remaining constant. As reported in the paper, the results are higher coproduct prices, an increase in coproduct production, and lower copper prices due to the resulting increase in copper production. The second case is when the supply of coproducts are constrained-leading to higher market prices. Copper production, as required by the simple model, is also reduced which Reply by M. Lonoff Campbell's comments give me an opportunity to clarify a few points in "Copper and Its Byproducts." That paper examined the affect of byproducts on the copper market and considered the relative riskiness of multi-metal deposits from an investment standpoint. That brief note made no attempt to be exhaustive. Nevertheless, Campbell's comments miss the point of the paper and necessitate a response. My "theoretical model" was static and I freely conceded after introducing the assumption of identical deposits that "none of the assumptions hold." These simplifying assumptions allowed me to bound the possible effects of higher byproduct prices on the copper price by assuming identical deposits and computing average price effects. I took great pains to subsequently explain that since deposits are not identical the identity of the marginal deposit might change due to byproduct price changes. In this case, average price affects will overstate the affect of byproducts on copper prices. According to Campbell, I dismiss as speculation any "real world behavior that does not always follow this pattern" (of metals prices moving in opposite directions). In the byproducts paper I noted that gold, copper, and silver price movements often parallel each other on an intra-day or day-to-day basis. Such movements are largely due to market anticipation of or reaction to changes in interest rates that affect carrying costs of metals stocks. Other movements may be due to anticipated changes in available supply or physical requirements. I loosely grouped these effects as speculative. To distinguish this statement from the main thrust of the paper, I contined "In the long run if gold and silver prices remain high the equilibrium copper price will be lower." The paper set out long run equilibrium conditions rather than attempting to explain price movements on a daily basis or on a year-to-year basis.

1.1. INTRODUCTION Despite indications of a general economic recovery in the U.S. during the mid-19801s, mine operators have not generally shared in the benefits of these reported better times. Budgets have not rebounded, borrowing is tougher, parent companies' pockets are not as deep as in previous years, and margins are not any better -- if there is any left over at all. Managing capital equipment budgets is always a challenge, and the last five years of stretched equipment lives make these decisions more tenuous. Delays and avoidance of replacements due to tough times inevitably makes those decisions increasingly difficult and usually more expensive The purposes of this paper are to present. a brief refresher outline of the fundamentals of equipment replacement analysis, to suggest a number of papers where analysis methods are explained in greater detail. and to recommend the use of a widespread microcomputer software capability (1-2-3) as the easiest path to a much-needed solution for a very difficult, and usually under-supported management decision problem 2. REPLACEMENT DECISION POLICY Investments in equipment replacements must compete for capital with all other investment alternatives. Capital for replacements of ten represents a greater commitment than do the new projects which a company might handle in a given year. But. sadly, formal policies for standardized analysis of replacements rarely exist, even in major companies. Yet this policy can be very significant in determining the competitiveness of a firm. Whereas many replacement decisions are based on cost minimization, economists and financial analysts agree that wealth maximization or return on investment is the superior criterion. Though the difference may seem slight, agreement on a firm's financial objective is vital. Replacement policy should be straight- forward. have a logical basis, and a proper level of sophistication. There are several reasons to develop a policy for replacement decision-making: [I] 1 - equipment's optimal economic life is nearly always shorter than its physical life; 2 - mine life often exceeds equipment life, so management must face these decisions routinly 3 - replacement capital costs, on an undiscounted basis, can run 25 to 75% of original capital 4 - technological changes may result in a newer machine or system which can operate more efficiently, more safely. or less expensively 5 - estimates should be made consistently in the fundamental areas of life expectancy, availability, utilization. price escalation, taxes 6 - long-term and short-term budgeting without decent data and analytical capability is nearly impossible, or at least ineffective Policy development assumptions which must be considered include: the planning horizon, cost patterns, interest rates, availability of capital, replacement vs. expansion, technology advances.
