The US Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu codeposited. Decreasing Cu codeposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.7 A h/150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 msecs. Graphite, lead and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave electrowinning at 70°C (158° F) gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10% to 30%, and a period of 100 msecs to 1000 msecs gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 µg/mL to 0.1 µg/mL. Au concentrations decreased from 54 µg/mL to 0.2 µg/mL and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µg/mL.

Of the six forms of asbestos, only three have been used to any significant extent in commerce. These are chrysotile, crocidolite, and amosite. Between 1870 and 1980, approximately 100 million tonnes of asbestos was mined worldwide, of which more than 90 million tonnes was the chrysotile variety, about 2.7 million tonnes the crocidolite variety, and about 2.2 million tonnes the amosite variety. The three principal diseases related to asbestos exposure are (1) lung cancer, (2) cancer of the pleural and peritoneal membranes (mesothelioma), and (3) asbestosis, a condition in which the lung tissue becomes fibrous and thus loses its ability to function. These diseases, however, are not equally prevalent in the various groups of asbestos workers that have been studied: the amount and type of disease depend on the duration of exposure, the intensity of exposure, and particularly, the type or types of asbestos to which the individual has been exposed. Lung cancer is caused by exposure to chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite asbestos; however, increased risk of this disease is usually found only in those who also smoke. Asbestosis is caused by prolonged exposure to all forms of asbestos, whereas mesothelioma is principally caused by exposure to crocidolite asbestos. There is good evidence that chrysotile asbestos does not cause any significant amount of mesothelioma mortality, even after very heavy exposure. The common nonasbestiform amphibole minerals, cummingtonite, grunerite, tremolite, anthophyllite, and actinolite, which are often defined as "asbestos" for regulatory purposes, have not been shown to cause disease in miners. Chrysotile asbestos, which accounts for about 95 percent of the asbestos used in the United States, has been shown by extensive Canadian studies to be safe when exposures do not exceed 1 fiber per cm3 for the working lifetime. Chrysotile dust levels found in buildings rarely exceed 0.001 fibers per cm3. Such dust concentrations will have no measurable health effect on the building occupants. Present and future controls of minerals defined as "asbestos" and removal of asbestos from buildings and homes may cost many billions of dollars. Much of this expense is unnecessary and even counterproductive. Asbestos abatement could in fact produce a health risk to those exposed to dusts during and after removal operations overly restrictive controls could force the use of poor or dangerous substitutes, and could greatly affect the hard-rock mining industry.

Dozer operators are frequently exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) during the execution of their work. Occupational exposure to WBV in Indian surface coal mines was evaluated by measuring vibration intensity and duration of exposure. A triaxial accelerometer was placed on the operator seat surface for taking the readings. Based on frequency-weighted root mean square acceleration equivalent to 8-hr shift duration, i.e., (A(8)) all dozer operators have exceeded an Exposure Action Value (EAV) of 0.5 m/s2 , and 90% of dozers did not exceed Exposure Limit Value (ELV) of 1.15 m/s2 . Based on Vibration Dose Value (VDV (8)), all dozer operators have exceeded Exposure Limit Value (EAV) of 9.1 m/s1.75, but no dozer operators have exceeded Exposure Limit Value (ELV) of 21 m/s1.75. Further, an epidemiological study was performed for identifying the extent of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among dozer operators. For the detailed study, 42 dozer operators and 22 controls were selected from 2 surface coal mines. The control group was not exposed to WBV. It was seen from the cross-sectional study that pain in the lower back was predominantly higher (83.33%) in the exposed group when compared with the control group (31.81%). Likewise, pain in the neck (47.61%), shoulder (42.85%), knees (42.85%), and ankle (11.90%) was higher in the exposed group than that of the control group (22.71%, 0%, 45.45%, and 4.54%). A significant observation among the exposed group was that there was degradation in the quality of life. The outcome of the study would assist in monitoring and mitigation of machinery-induced vibration diseases (MIVD) in India and generally applicable to most of the mechanized mines as well. However, comprehensive studies are still needed to enunciate the magnitude extent.

"INTRODUCTION The Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point (BCP) project, located in the north-east New Territories of Hong Kong, will form the seventh land crossing between the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HK) and Shenzhen in China (Figure 1). The BCP project comprises an 11km long dual two-lane trunk road linking the border crossing facility to the existing road infrastructure in HK and when completed it will facilitate future regional development and alleviate frequent traffic congestion at the existing Boarder control points.In December 2013 Dragages Hong Kong (a member of the Bouygues Construction Group) was awarded the 5.4km long Contract 2 section of the project, including the 4.8km long Lung Shan Tunnels, by the Civil Engineering and Development Department of the Government of the HK SAR. To overcome the difficult ground conditions anticipated along the Contract 2 section of the project the tunnels will be constructed using mechanical and drill and blast (D&B) excavation techniques together with a 14.1m diameter multi-mode Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Land constraints imposed on the project alignment require that the final 500m section at the northern end of the Lung Shan tunnels, under Princess Hill (Figure 2), takes an almost 90 degree turn towards the north. The resulting 354m radius curve restricts the sight-line of road users to below the minimum 110m at 80km/hr hence, the internal span of the tunnels needs to be increased from 12.6m, in the standard straight section, to 15.4m in this curved section to accommodate a widened shoulder which will provide the required sight-line distance."

Albite (NaA1Si308) is one of the important raw materials for the rapidly developing Turkish ceramic and glass industry. Prior to 1980, development of the ceramic industry in terms of raw material was dependent upon small-scale mining operations; in the last decade, these efforts have increased substantially. The aim of this study is to investigate the geochemical properties and distribution of albite occurrences in the Kocayayla district, which is about 12 km northeast of the town of Milas, about 50 km west of the city of Mugla in southwestern Anatolia. Kocayayla is also well known for its famous ancient city, Labranda. The field area is located in the Menderes Massif, which was formed by major tectonic events during the Late Proterozoic and subsequent periods. The target area was studied to prepare a detailed geological map (scale, 1:10,000), and to determine the formation of albite-mica-schist-quartzite borders in the host rock gneiss. To do this, systematic sampling of albite was done in the two main areas, the Sarikaya and Yumruta? regions. In the study area, albite zones are scattered within an area of about 20 km2, and they extend in a northeast-southwest direction; mica-schists and quartzite veins accompany these units. Mineralogical observations show that quartz is the main mineral associated with albite. In the ceramic industry, the albite + quartz assemblage is well known and is classified as "standard" or "super type," depending upon the content of TiO2 and Fe203. In this study, the Sarikaya albites (profile I) exhibit remarkably lower TiO2 (0.15% on the average) values contrasted to that of Yumruta? (profile 11; 0.24% on the average), whereas Fe203 values vary slightly from 0.076% to 0.085% in both regions.

International Minerals & Chemical Corp.'s New Wales operation near Mulberry, FL, is reportedly the world's largest concentrated phosphate chemical fertilizer and phosphate-based animal feed ingredients complex. Its latest expansion represents a $191-million investment. Two Northwest draglines were put to work at the operation early last year and, according to a company spokesman, total production from the units have more than doubled that from older rigs. This article describes how the draglines are used and provides details on the New Wales operation. The principle product at New Wales is phosphoric acid, produced by reacting ground phosphate rock with sulfuric acid in large concrete attack tanks. For each ton of phosphoric acid produced, New Wales must dispose of about 4.5 t (5 st) of waste gypsum. New Wales stores the gypsum on-site, and uses durable Northwest draglines to help handle the material. Two Units Maintain the Gypsum Stack After the gypsum is separated from the phosphoric acid through 23-m-diam (75-ft-diam) vacuum filters, it is mixed with water from a 121-hm2 (300-acre) recirculating cooling pond and, in slurry form, is pumped to the top of a 121-hm2 (300-acre) gypsum stack located adjacent to the cooling pond. The slurry contains mostly gypsum (CaSO4), with small traces of silica and other elements. The water at this point is corrosive, containing from 1-2% phosphoric acid. Its pH usually ranges from 1.5-2.0. Water drains from the gypsum stack into the cooling pond. Only about 15% of the pond's water, however, comes from the gypsum stack; the balance is from various sources throughout the complex and is held in the pond to cool before being returned for reuse in the plant. About 97% of New Wales' water needs come from this recycling program. The gypsum remains on the stack, inert, ready for future processing if it becomes economically feasible. Throughout the handling process, Northwest draglines work around the stacks' rim, continually directing the waste flow and digging out dried solids to heighten the perimeter dike to provide more storage volume. When wet, gypsum is extremely soft. When dry, it compacts well and provides footing with enough bearing capacity to support the machines. Processing at New Wales started in 1975 and the gypsum storage area has already been built up 12 m (40 ft) above grade. A total of 14.8 km3 (12,000 acre-ft) of solids are now stored. Iodine, a grayish-black nonmetallic element, with a density of 4.9 g/cm3, is a solid at ordinary temperatures. It is a member of the halogen family, along with fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and astatine. Iodine melts at 114°C. and at 184°C it is volatilized to a blue-violet gas that has an irritating odor. It does not occur as an element in nature, but occurs as iodates, iodides, or other combined forms. It is the 47th most abundant element in the earth's crust. Iodine was discovered by Bernard Courtois in 1811. He observed an unknown substance in the crude soda ash that results from the burning of seaweed. Samples of this unknown substance were identified to be a new element, and in 1813 Gay-Lussac named the substance iode, from the Greek word for violet color. The world production during 1989 and 1990 [(Table 1)] is estimated to be about 16 million kg per year (Lyday, 1991), of which about 30% is consumed in the United States. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY Compounds of iodine are minor constituents in seawater and brines, in certain marine organisms, and in minerals of the Chilean nitrate deposits. Seawater contains approximately 0.05 ppm iodine, and certain marine organisms, such as seaweed, sponges, fish, and some brown algae, are able to further concentrate iodine (Lyday, 1989a). Some seaweed can extract and accumulate iodine up to 0.45% of their weight, on a dry basis. The northern Chilean nitrate deposits, in the Atacama Desert, contain the following iodine minerals: lautarite, Ca(I03), (calcium iodate); dietzeite, CaJIO,), (CrO,) (calcium iodate-chromate); and bruggenite, Ca(I03), . H20 (Erickson, 1981). Various subsurface brines also contain iodine compounds. Some gas-field brines in the United States and Japan locally contain 30 to 1 300 ppm iodine. Several coals in Germany also contain iodine compounds. Iodine has been recovered from brines mainly in Japan and the United States, but also in Java, Indonesia, Italy, England, and the former USSR. Iodine has also been recovered from seaweed in Ireland, Scotland, France, Japan, Norway, and the USSR. Seaweed was a major source of iodine for the world in the first half of this century, and it remains as a large resource. The reserves and future resources of iodine are large, even excluding the resources in seaweed and seawater, and are shown in [Table 1]. Analysis Iodine as the free element can be detected by the characteristic blue color it gives to a starch solution. Quantitatively it is determined as the free element by titration with standard thiosulfate solutions using starch as an indicator. Colorimetric methods are also applicable. PRINCIPAL PRODUCING COUNTRIES Major iodine-producing nations are Japan, Chile, the USSR, and the United States, with lesser amounts being produced in China and Indonesia ([Fig. 1; Table 1]). Annual world production in 1989 and 1990, respectively, is estimated at 15.6 and 16 million kg. In Japan and Chile, the production of iodine depends on production of other materials, such as natural gas or nitrates, respectively, whereas in US operations (in Oklahoma) iodine is the major product recovered from natural brines. Chile was for a long time the principal world producer of iodine from its nitrate-fertilizer operations, but in recent years Japan has become the world leader with increased production of natural gas and associated iodine-rich brines.

Consistent increase has been the mark of North American potassium (K) consumption. In 23 of the last 25 years there was upward progress The pace of usage has quickened in the past three or four years This, together with a predicted accelerated future demand, has created unprecedented interest -and activity in the potash industry. Potassium enjoyed a ninefold increase in consumption from 1940 to the present time in North America (Figure 1). Since 1950, it increased from just over a million tons of potash (K20) annually to nearly three million tons in 1964. World-wide usage exclusive of mainland China is now about 10 million metric tons. Some predictions call for another doubling in consumption in the next 10 to 15 years, About 20 percent of the four million tons of K20 produced in North America is now exported overseas and this percentage is likely to increase in the years ahead. Ten years ago, exports represented only 3-1/2 percent of total K2O production from this continent.

The variogram is the function used to express the intercorrelation of a regionalized variable. It is used to quantify, for example, the natural variability of mineralization and in that sense may be thought of a average disimilarity between metal quantity at two points inside a deposit.2 As David2 explains, appropriate mathematical functions of distance and direction are used to characterize variograms, a process that he says is analogous to selecting a normal or lognormal model for an observed distribution. Methods for choosing a model for the underlying variogram of a random function based on the sample data appear in the literature.3,8 A crossvalidation procedure is available to check the validity of the model.3 However, statistical validation of the choice of the model through the mechanism of hypothesis testing is not presently available. In the section to follow, notation and background material is presented upon which a large sample test procedure will be constructed. The stationarity assumptions presented refer to covariance stationarity. A test procedure is then proposed, and an example is given for the case of the one dimensional random process.

From 1990 to 1996, 16 states reported 92 injuries from falls of roof, rib or face in the more than 90 underground stone mines in the United States (Fig.1). Missouri, Pennsylvania and Kentucky accounted for 48% of the total number of injuries (Fig. 2). Of this total, 11 miners were killed. Of the 11 fatalities, 10, or 91%, were associated with unrecognized loose or failed rock within the roof beam. Additionally, unrecognized roof beam failures resulted in a majority of the falls of ground injuries occurring in underground US stone mines from1990 to 1996. This number is not large in magnitude. But a workforce of fewer than 2,000 miners makes for a high fatal-accident rate. The severity of the typical fall-of-ground injury is, in general, very high. About three-fifths of all roof, face and rib fall injuries were designated by the US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as some kind of lost time accident. MSHA assigns each accident a severity value from one to six. A one represents a fatality, a two, a permanent disability and three, a lost time accident (Fig. 3).

US coal consumption reached new heights in 1985, but production was constrained by excess consumer inventories. Domestic consumption of coal reached a record 742 Mt (818 million st) during the year. This is a 3.4% gain over the previous consumption high 718 Mt (791 million st) in 1984. An additional 84 Mt (92.7 million st) of US coal were shipped abroad in 1985, up 13.7% from exports a year earlier. Coal production in 1985 totaled 804 Mt (886 million st), 1.1% below the record 813 Mt (896 million st) produced in 1984. The slight decline in coal output is attributed primarily to a 13% drawdown of large consumer stockpiles built up in 1984 in anticipation of a miners strike that never occurred. Coal demand, and hence production, were also restrained by slower economic growth in 1985 and additional gains in nuclear generation of electricity. Domestic market requirements for coal in 1985 were mixed. Electric utility consumption rose 4.4%; coke plants consumed 6.7% less coal; coal requirements in the other industrial sector expanded by 2.1% and consumption in the residential and commercial sector fell 14.8%. The 2.2% increase in electric power generation in 1985 resulted in a 4.4% rise in utility coal consumption, totaling 630 Mt (694 million st) for the year. Twenty-nine of 45 states where coal-fired electric power plants were operating shared in the 26.7 Mt (29.5 million st) increase in 1985. Coal receipts at utilities fell by 16 Mt (18 million st) as these facilities worked off 21 Mt (23.4 million st) from stockpiles during the year. Electricity generation at coal-fired power plants similarly climbed 4.4% to 1.4 trillion kWh in 1985. This gave coal a 56.8% share of electricity generated from all energy sources compared with 55.5% in 1984. The average price of coal delivered to these facilities remained essentially unchanged during the year. It declined on 1.5% from $38.26/t ($34.71 per st) during the fourth quarter of 1984 to $37.70/t ($34.20 per st) in the fourth quarter of 1985. Coal consumption at coke plants continue to reflect a depressed steel industry. After rebounding 18.9% in 1984 for the first time in five years, coal consumption at coke plants again declined 6.7% to 37 Mt (41.1 million st) in 1985. Coke consumption 26.5 Mt (29.3 million st) exceeded production, 26 Mt (28.7 million st), in 1985. This resulted in a 1-Mt (1.2-million st) decline in coke stocks at producer and distributor levels during the year. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants decreased 7.6% from $64.30/t ($58.34 per st) during the final quarter of 1984 to $59.42/t (53.91 per st) in the last quarter of 1985. Coal consumption in other industries, including all manufacturing and industrial consumers except coke plants, totaled 68.3 Mt (75.3 million st) in 1985. This was the highest level attained in more than a decade. But the lower percentage rise last year (2.1% compared to 11.8% in 1984) reflected slower growth in the nation's economy in 1985. The average price of coal delivered to industrial firms declined 4.5% from $42.32/t ($38.39 per st) in the fourth quarter of 1984 to $40.39/t ($36.65 per st) in the last quarter of 1985. Coal-producing states in Appalachia mined 9.8 Mt (10.8 million st) tons less in 1985 than in 1984 for a 2.4% loss. The largest contributors to the region's production decrease to 393 Mt (433 million st) were Pennsylvania, down 14.7% to 60 Mt (66 million st); Ohio, down 8.3% to 32.6 Mt (36 million st); and West Virginia, down 2.9% to 115 Mt (127 million st). Conversely, eastern Kentucky production was up 4.8% to 111 Mt (122.8 million st) in 1985, while production in Tennessee climbed 9.7% to 40 Mt (44 million st). No coal was mined in Georgia last year. Coal production in the interior region in 1985 declined 3.9% to 173 Mt (190.4 million st). Substantial production losses occurred in Indiana, down 8% to 31 Mt (34.5 million st); and in western Kentucky, down 7.9% to 36 Mt (40 million st). Coal production in Texas rose 5.7% to 39 Mt (43.5 million st) in 1985. Louisiana began mining lignite 140 kt (151,000 st) during the year. Production in the western region increased 3.4% to 238 Mt (262.5 million st) in 1985. Wyoming, up 5.3% to 125 Mt (140 million st); and North Dakota, up 16.5% to 23.5 Mt (26 million st) contributing the largest amounts. Production gains were also shown in Washington, Utah and, notably, in Alaska where coal output climbed 72.9% to 1.3 Mt (1.5 million st) in 1985. Most of the additional coal produced in Alaska last year was shipped abroad. Coal stocks held by consumers totaled 154 Mt (170 million st) at the end of the year. This was 27 Mt (30 million st), or 13.7% below the inventory level at the end of 1984. Stocks held by producers and distributors declined by 868 kt (957,000 st), or 2.8% in 1985 to 30 Mt (33 million st). A drawdown in stockpiles occurred in each consumer sector during 1985. Stocks held by electric utilities totaled 142 Mt (156 million st) at the year's end, 13% lower than stock levels at the end of 1984.

This paper evaluated using a water-filled abandoned mine (Orphan Boy) as a heat source for a 240- kW closed-loop heat pump with the goal of heating a 2,000-m2 building. The mine has a 245-m vertical shaft connected to a large stope by three horizontal cross-cut shafts. There is 1,250 x 106 L of water at a consistent temperature of 24-26° C that is available mostly in the stope. The only heat exchanger placement option is in the vertical shaft. Therefore, the focus was to model heat exchanger placement in the vertical shaft to determine the extent to which the systems will induce thermal currents between the stope and vertical shaft. Modeling of thermal currents, temperature profiles and heat contribution from the ground was done using finite difference and computational fluid dynamics. An optimal configuration was determined showing sufficient water movement and heat transfer will occur with a low water temperature in the shaft above 20° C. This project supports a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) grant that will implement the full-scale system.

Introduction Argyle is located in the Kimberley region in northwest Australia (Fig. 1). It is a significant diamond discovery by world standards and is the first major diamond find in Australia. The deposit consists of a pipe and associated alluvial deposits. Before the 1970s, diamonds were known to exist only sporadically in Australia. They have been found occasionally in association with gold deposits in Western Australia. There is a small deposit near Copeton in New South Wales. Some alluvial occurrences have also been found in Victoria, South Australia, and New South Wales. The first indicator minerals in the Kimberley region of Western Australia were discovered in January 1973. Production from the alluvial deposits at Argyle began in 1983. A $430-million construction program to develop a mine and treatment plant capable of producing 25 million carats per year was completed in December (1 carat = 0.2 grams). Ownership and management Participants in the project are known as the Argyle Diamond Mines Joint Venture. The group consists of CRA Ltd., 56.8%; Ashton Mining Ltd., 38.2%; and the Western Australian Diamond Trust (formerly Northern Mining Corp.), 5%. The project is managed by Argyle Diamond Mines Pty. Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of CRA. Marketing is undertaken separately by the Western Australian Diamond Trust and by Argyle Diamond Sales Ltd. (for CRA and Ashton Mining groups). History Ownership of the Exploration Joint Venture has changed over the last 12 years as various parties changed their shareholdings. The original Kalumburu Joint Venture was formed in 1972 with five participants, each holding a 20% interest. By 1983, a number of ownership changes had occurred. The end result is that two original participants have sold out. CRA now holds a 56.8% share and the Ashton Mining Group holds 38.2%. CRA also assumed project management in January 1977. Table 1 demonstrates the long lead times involved in developing a project.

Recently research efforts have been made to obtain a high-purity gibbsite concentrate, suitable for first-class alumina refractories, from a Brazilian bauxite ore containing gibbsite (50%), quartz (35%),and kaolinite (15%). Detailed polished-section microprobe analysis was used to describe the liberation characteristics of the ore. Experimental results suggest that the kaolinite liberation characteristics can be described by King's liberation model and that only about 11% of the kaolinite is expected to be liberated at a particle size of 75 µ. Bench-scale experiments for the flotation of gibbsite/kaolinite from quartz using alkyl sulfates as collectors were particularly successful at pH 2, and under appropriate conditions a concentrate containing 93.0% A1 0 (calcined basis) was obtained 2 3 at a gibbsite recovery of about 96%. Subsequently, the more difficult separation of kaolinite from gibbsite was accomplished by kaolinite flotation from the alumina concentrate with a quaternary ammonium salt at pH 6 to produce a high-purity gibbsite product, 97.4% A12O3 (calcined basis), at an overall gibbsite recovery from the bauxite flotation feed of about 90%.

Proximity Detection Systems (PDSs) are used in the mining industry for protecting mine workers from striking, pinning, and crushing injuries when they work in close proximity to heavy machines such as continuous mining machines (CMMs). Currently all Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved PDSs are magnetic field based systems which can be influenced by the presence of wire mesh that is commonly used for supporting roof and ribs in underground coal m ines. In this paper, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) characterize the influence of the mesh on the performance of magnetic PDSs by measuring the magnetic field difference around a CMM caused by the presence of the mesh. The results show that the magnetic fields are generally enhanced by the mesh which causes the PDS detection zones to be increased correspondingly. It was discovered that the fields around the joints of two mesh sections have the greatest enhancement and thus deserve more attention. In addition, it is found that the presence of mesh can also cause a variation in the generator current. The influence of mesh is characterized by the change in the generator current with respect to the distance between the generator and the mesh. It was found that the generator current change caused by the mesh can be significant (on the order of ten) when the mesh is extremely close to the generator (e.g, less than 1 cm) and is negligible when mesh is relatively far (greater than 0.15 m). The findings in this paper can be used to develop guidelines and best practices to mitigate the influence of mesh on PDSs. INTRODUCTION The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires operators of underground coal mines to equip place-changing continuous mining machines (CMMs) with proximity detection systems (PDSs) to protect mine workers from striking, pinning and crushing injuries when they work around these heavy machines. Although a variety of technologies can be implemented for proximity detection, the magnetic-field-based PDS that was originally developed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown great effectiveness in challenging mining environments and currently all MSHA-approved PDSs are magnetic-field-based systems. As shown in Figure 1, a magnetic PDS typically includes two major components----the magnetic field generator and the Miner Wearable Component (MWC). Magnetic fields are generated by injecting a high electric current into a ferrite-rod antenna sealed in the generator. The magnetic field strength detected by an MWC varies with the distance between the MWC and the generator. In a typical PDS, multiple generators are mounted on different locations of the machine. The relative location/zone of an MWC is determined based on the field strengths from different generators picked by the MWC. Ideally, for a PDS to work properly in the underground, the magnetic fields generated by the different generators should be stable and not vary with the environment, as the system would interpret any variation of the magnetic field as a result of the distance change between the machine and the miner wearing the MWC. In reality, however, this is not always the case since magnetic fields can be altered by a number of environmental factors such as the presence of steel wire mesh that has been widely used in underground coal mines for supporting roof and ribs In this paper, the influence of mesh on the PDS performance is investigated and the magnetic field change caused by the mesh is measured.

Introduction The frigid regions of Canada's high arctic islands are well-known for major oil and gas explorations. But mining leads the way in development. Cominco Ltd.'s Polaris mine is in its second full year of commercial production, and outstripping the rated production capacity foreseen by its planners. The Polaris mine is located on the shore of Little Cornwallis Island, near the settlement of Resolute Bay. The mine property is compact. It occupies about 3 km2 (0.5 sq miles) of the vast Arctic landscape. A number of mining and technological firsts were necessary to bring a mine into production at this 76° North latitude. Development constraints that had to be overcome included climate, remote location, and the limited ice-free shipping season. Construction of the entire process plant and ancillary facilities took place on a barge in the South where labor and supplies are plentiful. The plant was towed through ice-strewn waters to its permanent location at the mine site 1450 km (900 miles) from the North Pole. Freighters moved the first shipments to the South during ice break-up in late summer 1982. Most of the zinc concentrate is sold to European smelters. The remainder is tolled at a custom smelter in Europe, and the resulting metal is sold by Cominco. Lead concentrate is sold to European smelters. The mine was designed to produce 177 kt/a (195,000 stpy) of zinc concentrate and 41 kt/a (45,000 stpy) of lead concentrate. Actual production in 1983 was considerably greater, with both mill throughput and feed grades being higher than forecast. Production was 217 kt (239,300 st) of zinc concentrate and 51 kt (56,300 st) of lead concentrate. Average milling rate was 2.3 kt/d (2500 stpd), well above the designed capacity of 2.1 kt/d of (2300 stpd). Arctic Climate Extremes The climate is typical of the Arctic: very dry with short, cool summers and long, cold winters. From November through February, there is continuous darkness. Continuous daylight prevails from April to August. Precipitation is light, rivaling the Sahara desert at about 127 mm (5 in.) of rain and snow a year. An almost continual wind forms deep snow drifts against any obstacle on the ground. Temperatures range from a winter low of about -50°C (-58°F) to a relatively pleasant 15°C (59°F) during sunny days in August. Freeze-up begins in September and ice thickness increases from less than 0.3 m (1 ft) in early October to a maximum of about 2.1 m (7 ft) in May. "First Majestic Silver Corp. (FMS) is a silver mining company founded in 2002 that operates exclusively in Mexico. It has six producing silver mines, one of which is the La Encantada silver mine (La Encantada) located in the state Coahuila. La Encantada is located near the southern United States border and 708 km (440 miles) north of the city Torreon.La Encantada is located in the Sierra Madre Oriental and is a high-temperature carbonate replacement deposit. Mineralization in La Encantada occurs in many different forms such as veins, chimneys, breccia pipes and reefs (mantos). Mineralization is mainly oxides of iron, zinc, lead and manganese, with high concentrations of sulfides at depth relating to two main intrusive events: the Milagros Intrusive and the La Prieta Skarn.Mining began in La Encantada during the 1950s with small vertical shafts, drifts and raises. It focuses on the high-grade silver zones using traditional hoists and extraction methods, before branching into two main separate mining camps: El Plomo and Penoles camp. Penoles, the previous owner, focused mainly on large ore bodies using post pillar cut-and-fill mining method to extract the higher-grade material. Due to the type of ground, irregularity of pillars, and rock conditions, large amounts of high-grade pillars had to be left in situ to ensure the stability of the excavations. The mined-out areas would then be filled with lower-grade material to assist in the stability of the secondary level. These room-and-pillar development entries were 2.5 m x 2.5 m (8.2 ft x 8.2 ft) and spaced every 10 m (32 ft), leaving a vertical pillar of 7.5 m (25 ft). First Majestic acquired La Encantada in 2006. After the acquisition of the mine, the company began the conversion of the surveying reference system from a local grid (Maria Isabel Shaft as 0,0) to the Nav27 coordinate system, and subsequently converted to the WGS84 coordinate system in 2015. Due to the extensive history of the mine, different areas were surveyed with different systems, causing significant challenges when designing the principal extraction levels, pillar heights and ramp locations. To overcome this difficulty, the entire mine was resurveyed and the old workings transposed to the new coordinate system, except for some inaccessible areas due to poor ground conditions or ground collapses. To further ensure pillar height and the safety of the mine workers, probe holes were drilled during the development process."

To achieve compliance with 2015 EPA Tier 4 Final regulations, which permit only around 10% of Tier 3 particulate matter (PM) and NOx emissions, a number of technologies are being implemented. Use of a fuel borne nanoparticle combustion catalyst reduces the level of PM and unburned hydrocarbons exiting the combustion chamber, alleviating the burden on downstream exhaust after-treatment systems. The impact of an iron-ceria combustion catalyst (GO2) on carbon oxidation kinetics and on diesel engine emissions is presented. The iron-ceria nanoparticles catalyze carbon oxidation at lower temperatures and increase the oxidation rate by a factor of 18 at 400 °C. Engine tests on a generator powered by a John Deere Model engine and field tests on a Cummins ISC 330 tractor truck and CAT 3508B propulsion engines are presented. Use of GO2 resulted in a reduction in PM10 (particulate matter under 10 um) emissions of up to 26% and a hydrocarbon emission reduction of up to 41%. NOx emissions did not increase in these trials and the amount of change depended on engine type. Application of this fuel borne technology for emissions reductions in mining equipment offers significant benefits.

Peabody's Camoy mining system is a truly continuous conceptual method of underground mining of coal. The system solves the three factors which limit coal from being mined continuously. Camoy's principal features are improved productivity and increased recovery. A conservative retreat production rate of 2 1/2 times normal continuous miner room-and-pillar mining rates are projected for a 6-7' seam. Overall mine productivity will be 2 times normal, with a potential for considerably higher rates. Major incremental production increases can be achieved by partial implementation of the system. Total mine recoveries of 75% are expected. The system includes both advance and retreat mining. The retreat half of the approach encompasses many of the features of short wall mining. A central panel is prepared for retreat mining by driving entries using room-and-pillar mining to the left and right of it. The room-and-pillar mining encompasses the advance features of Camoy. In the retreat phase, the roof of the face is supported by self advancing chocks or shields. All mining is done under the chocks by a continuous miner. As the miner advances the chocks continuously move forward behind it. Thus, as in a typical short wall system, continuous roof support is attained. Ventilation is unidirectional, another characteristic of short-wall type systems. Fresh air is brought in and passed over the working personnel. It moves to the face where the continuous miner is operating, picks up the generated dust and released methane, and is exhausted away from all personnel. Exposure to respirable dust and ignition hazards due to methane build-ups are almost totally eliminated. Thus, the second limiting factor is overcome and continuous ventilation is attained. Coal mined with the continuous miner is passed to a surge car and then to a Serpentix conveyor. The Serpentix, a Peabody invention, is a flexible conveyor capable of going around corners.

"Shin-Yokohama station (tentative name), one of the station of the Sotetsu - Tokyu through line (ST line), is under construction by the OPEN – CUT method. The Underground Soil–Cement Steel Diaphragm Wall is implemented as an earth retaining wall. This earth retaining wall is utilized as a main body of a subway station. It is the first time to utilize this earth retaining wall as the main body. There are two difficult issues for this project. One is that this station is planned under busy major road and there are many underground utilities, for example, an electrical transmission line. Because of that, construction area is limited. The other is that this station is located in a thick soft clay layer. This layer has a high risk of consolidation settlement because of draining during main excavation. Thus, high water tightness is required for this earth retaining wall. This paper reports design and construction methods for the Underground Soil–Cement Steel Diaphragm wall introduced as a part of the body of the subway station.1. OUTLINE OF SHIN-YOKOHAMA STATION 1-1. Location and structure of Shin-Yokohama Station Shin-Yokohama station is an intermediate station on the ST line connected to the Tokaido-Shinkansen bullet train, the JR-Yokohama line and the Yokohama Municipal Subway. Access to Tokyo and the Tokaido- Shinkansen from the eastern part of Yokohama city will be improved by this project. In addition, the number of estimated passengers of this station is one hundred thousand people/day because a soccer stadium (Nissan Stadium: 72,000 people), a huge indoor arena and a hotel are located in this area. This station consists of 4 stories and 3 spans (Max width; 29m, Depth; 33m, Length; 325.5m). Completion image is shown in Figure 2. Generally, stations have 1 platform and 2 trucks. But this station has 2 platforms and 3 tracks because some of ST line trains return at this station and a train deadheads from Hazawa station to this station in an emergency. This station is planned as 4 stories underground station, and the platform is on the lowest story. The reason why this station is in such a deeper position is to prevent the alignment from interfering with the Yokohama Municipal Subway station and foundation piles for bridge piers existing along the alignment. Even under the constraint conditions, earth covering should be shallow as much as possible. As a result, the tunnel edge is very close to the foundation pile, and the gap is only about 2m (Figure 3). In addition, passengers will be able to change trains easily from the ST line to the Yokohama Municipal Subway or vice versa at this station."
