In recent times, smelter off gases treatment plants have become more efficient and environmentally friendly. Where in the past it was acceptable to process only high strength, treatable furnace gases, new smelters must now treat primary gases and abate dust and SO2 from secondary gases: Processing smelter gases can present some interesting challenges. Some equipment can see varying concentrations of sulfuric acid, up to the boiling point, with a periodic table of contaminates thrown in for good measure. Treating weaker secondary gases have, in the past, been cost prohibitive. Nowadays, new technology, like physical absorption or catalytic carbon, show promise for economically treating low strength secondary gases. Modem smelters do a much better job of treating the SO2 laden gases generated by the smelting process but significant challenges remain.

High speed drilling, mucking, and hauling equipment was used in driving approximately 2.16 km(7100 ft) of lower power tunnel in quartz diorite for the Tyee Lake Hydroelectric Project near Wrangell, Alaska. The .91 m(36 in.) guage rail mounted equipment included a Tamrock 2-boom electric/hydraulic drill jumbo, a Haggl and 8HR mucker , and 3 Hagglund 115C shuttle cars. Several other innovative techniques allowed maximum advance rates of up to 17.5 m/day(57ft/day) in the 3 m(10ft) horseshoe section. Average tunnel advance was approximately 11 m(day(35.4 ft/day). The primary difficulties preventing full utilization of the equipment potential were the operators' "learning curve", the need for complete retraining of all personnel in the new methods, and minor sections of faulted ground.

Respirable coal mine dust (RCMD) is a complex mixture of carbonaceous and mineral particles with a variation in size and shape. Accumulation of RCMD in the lungs of underground coal miners results in severe respiratory damage and ultimately progressive pneumoconiosis known as the black lung disease. The occurrence of the black lung disease dropped to a low of 2.1% in 1990s but has increased to 3.1% in 2000s [1], prompting more research on coal mine dust mitigation. In addition to surveying the impact of new mining technologies on the size of generated dust and exposure measurement, a comprehensive characterization of physico-chemical properties of RCMD particles are essential for a better understanding of the adverse health effects of coal mine dust. Such vital factors include particle size, surface charge, morphology, composition, and agglomeration state. The respirable fraction of RCMD, has been designated as particles < 10 μm in diameter, and almost all studies on the RCMD toxicity have focused on micron-sized particles. However, recent toxicological studies have shown that nanoparticles (particles with one dimension less than 100 nm) can have a magnified toxicity compared to the larger particles with the same chemistry [2]. Nanoparticles have a much higher specific surface area compared to the same mass of larger particles and are thus more reactive. Most micron-size particles can be cleared by the body’s defense mechanism. However, inhaled nanoparticles can easily deposit in all regions of the respiratory tract and can translocate to vital organs. [2].

The development drilling program of the Copper Cities mine indicated that the molybdenum content of the ore would be about 0.011% MoS2&apos; The molybdenum content of the Miami mine at the same time was about 0.025% MOS2&apos; The Miami mill had a very successful molybdenum operation which used bleeder turbine steam from the Miami power plant for the steaming operation. The much lower grade of the Copper Cities ore, the absence of a source of low cost steam and the use of sodium aerofloat as the copper collector which Miami experience indicated did not respono readily to the steaming technique made very doubtful the success of a similar operation at Copper Cities. However, the relatively few pounds of copper that could be recovered from the low grade Copper Cities heads made very desirable the recovery of the molybdenwa,as a source of additional revenue. Accordingly, shortly after the Copper Cities mill began operation, a research program was instituted to develop a suitable method of molybdenum recovery. This program explored first, the successful steaming process then in use at Miami and as expected, found it unable to decompose the sodium aerofloat copper collector. The known chemical depressants were then tried without much encouragement. Finally the copper concentrate was dried, not roasted, to 2-3% mOisture and this along with sodium ferro-cyanide and cyanide resulted in sufficient copper depression that a final molybdenum concentrate containing 1.0% CU could be made. The Missouri-Oklahoma tripoli district was discovered and first mined in 1869 near Seneca, Missouri. Tripoli is a microcrystalline form of high-purity silica that is porous, light- weight, and friable and is derived from a parent siliceous sedimentary rock from which soluble minerals have been leached. Tripoli deposits, 2 to 20 feet thick, occur in cherty limestones of Mississippian age beneath 2 to 10 feet of overburden. They are mined in open pits up to 9 acres in size. The color of tripoli is white, but it also commonly is light pink or red where stained by red iron oxides and clays. Ground tripoli is used commercially as an abrasive or in buffing and polishing compounds and is prized for such physical characteristics as its abrasiveness, porosity, permeability, absorption, and specific gravity.

Trona ore at the Westvaco mine of FMC Corporation has been obtained by room- and-pillar methods since the mine began operation. The flat-lying, 10-foot bed of trona, Na2CO3 NaHCO3 2H2O, is covered by 1500 feet of weak shale and sandstone. Extraction of pillars on the retreat quite often throws large amounts of weight onto development workings. Weak shales in the roof and floor fail rapidly and the mine ribs slough to such an extent that mining often becomes very difficult. When this occurs efficiency goes down, costs go up, and the risk to men and machinery increases greatly. Difficult mining conditions in the early 60&apos;s forced a re-evaluation of all presently known mining techniques in bedded deposits. Many room-and-pillar mining plans&apos; were compared with the system in use at that time, but none of them offered a better solution to the roof control problem. Longwall techniques were seriously considered, but machinery was not available that would cut the hard trona seam and still maintain the productivity obtained from room-and-pillar sections. Roof cones troy in the longwall methods appeared to be more satisfactory than that found in room-and--pillar techniques. It was therefore felt that a new technique using the longwall principle and based on rock mechanics should be tried rather than previously known pillaring methods.

The Egyptian marine phosphorite of Sebaiya West, the Nile Valley, consisting of both non-oxidized hard siliceous and oxidized leached friable ore types, is subjected to a roughing-cleaning silica flotation circuit for production of wet-process phosphoric acid concentrate. Operating at its maximum capacity of 268 t/hr, the following were the main problems encountered during the early stages of running the plant: 1. The tremendous amount of slimes generated by scrubbing the crushed ore causing turbidity in the plant thickener after a short time of operation, regardless of the added flocculant. 2. Rod mill choking leading to inefficient performance of all other equipment and poor flotation results. 3. The drastic increase in imported oleic acid price. Pulp density and slurry flowrate measurements at different points of the plant as well as ore microscopy, size distribution analysis, chemical analysis and x-ray diffraction analysis of representative ore samples coupled with Work Index measurements of feed samples showed that the wide variation in the ore&apos;s hardness was responsible for such problems. Application of the locally produced non-edible rice bran oil as a substitute to imported oleic acid in flotation resulted in total saving of U.S.$2 million in 1990. The total unsaturated fatty acid content of the oil is high, ranging from 75.2 to 81.5 mole % of which the C18-unsaturated fatty acid content ranges from 72 to 79 mole %.

COAL CHARACARISTICS AND PREPREPARATION REQUIREMENTS Preparation and Market Specifications The national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) established by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1977 require that when coal is burned, the environmental degradation should be a minimum. For this reason, even coal containing low ash and sulfur must be used in compliance with the NAAQS. The most important pollutants resulting from the combustion of coal are ash, SO2, and NOx gases, and the particulate matter escaping with the combustion gases. The ash is the residue left after complete combustion of coal. It results from the inorganic mineral matter existing in the coal before it is burned. The SO2 results from the combustion of inorganic and organic sulfur associated with the coal. The inorganic sulfur may occur as pyrite, marcasite, or as sulfate sulfur of mostly iron and calcium. The authorities disagree in the definition of organic sulfur in the coal. However, according to ASTM Standard D2492-77,1 the organic sulfur is that sulfur occurring in the coal after subtracting the sum of pyrite and sulfatic sulfurs from the total sulfur in the coal. The NOx gases are produced from high temperature oxidation of nitrogen in the coal that is released into the atmosphere. The particulate matter may consist of fly ash and unburned coal. Selective Mining The cleaning of coal from included ash and sulfur-bearing materials should start at the working faces of surface or underground mines. This can be done by (1) mining only those seams which meet certain quality standards, (2) not mining sections of the seams which may cause deterioration in overall quality of the mined coal, and (3) using a mining method that allows selective mining of coal areas or horizons either underground or on the surface. Since these steps improve the coal quality before the coal reaches the preparation plant, they can be considered to constitute precleaning of coal. During the exploration and development stage of a mine, core and channel samples taken from the coal seam are used to determine (1) petrographic analysis and physical properties,2 (2) character of roof and floor of the seam, 3,4 (3) character and quality of impurities,5 (4) proximate and ultimate analysis, and (5) washability characteristics. However, all of these parameters are subject to considerable variation even within the same seam during the advance of the coal face. This creates a problem in meeting the market demand for coal quality if the coal is to be shipped directly from the mine. If the mining operation is large enough, special blending silos or mechanical blending systems may have to be used to provide uniform quality to the market. The CANMET diesel-related work, carried out in cooperation with the Canadian mining industry, resulted in the identification of several useful R/D studies. One such study was the development of a dash-mounted alarm signal system to indicate overexposure of production LHD diesel vehicle operators to toxic contaminants in a mine environment. The resulting instrument has been called the [CO2 Exposure Meter]. This meter is particularly applicable to LHD machines because previous investigations have indicated that operators of LHDs and some haulage truck drivers are exposed to up to 200% of the contaminant concentrations measured in the general mine return air. This paper describes the development of the system which continuously monitors and displays the operator&apos;s exposure to diesel pollutants, and indicates an overexposure by an alarm light. The overexposure limits are preset by mine personnel based on carbon dioxide (CO2) measurements, which in turn are related to simultaneous spot respirable combustible dust (RCD) measurements (or to Air Quality Indices - AQI, if available). The CO2 settings are, in general, related to the engine/exhaust treatment selections, vehicle duty cycle and local ventilation rates and efficiency. The system continuously displays one of three lights: green for underexposure, yellow for caution, and red for overexposure. Overexposure can occur for several reasons, such as: reduced ventilation, malfunction of the diesel vehicle, and excessive airborne contaminants. The paper confirms satisfactory operation of the system in a laboratory-simulated mine environment, as well as in field trials.

This paper compares the covariance and multiquadric functions in some mining and geological applications. The basic principals of the two techniques are covered briefly. Similarities and dissimilarities of the covariance and multiquadric functions are discussed geometrically, mathematically and practically. A 14 km2 x 16 km2 area in Baharia Oasis, Western Desert of Egypt, was selected for a detailed comparative test. The gravity anomalies of 48 test stations were computed by using the data of 63 control stations. The results indicated that the covariance function is quite better than the multiquadric one. On the other hand, the multiquadric function is simpler in computation than the covariance, which requires precalculations such as semivariogram and covariogram. Moreover, multiquadric equations are based on geometric and physical considerations rather than covariance functions.

India does not possess any soluble potash reserves and depends completely on imports. In this study, an attempt has been made to recover potash (K) values from the mica sample employing thermal and mechanical routes followed by leaching. Direct leaching of mica in different lixiviants is found to be ineffective with very low K-dissolution (1–5%). Heat treatment with different fluxes, such as NaCl, NaOH, and CaCl2, is carried out and almost 85% K-values are recovered. Mechanical activation of mica and with different calcium additives is carried out to recover potash values. K is recovered in leach solution in the form of soluble salts, such as K2CO3, K2SO4, and KOH, and leach residue consists mainly of calcium-alumino-silicates. Using mechanical activation with flux, it is possible to recover >95% K-values from mica sample. Mechanical activation with calcium-based flux is found sustainable in the recovery of K-values from mica.

This paper aims to assess the current and future role of coal in energy strategy of Turkey and evaluates the compatibility of the policies to the EU energy policy and strategy. The Turkish government set targets to utilize more coal reserves of the country in next decades. However, the country is also in the process of becoming an EU Member State, hence, it is expected that the energy policies have to comply with the EU. Moreover, Turkey ratified Kyoto Protocol, thus the country should limit greenhouse gas emissions. Clean Coal, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies are expected to become an important instrument for the mid-term reduction of CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants. An alternative technique to the conventional CCS methods is CO2 sequestration by mineral carbonation. Turkey has significant resources of magnesium silicate minerals (olivine, serpentine) deposits which can be utilised in CO2 sequestration by mineral carbonation method.

A mineralogical and geochemical characterization study was carried out on arsenic-bearing Ketza mine tailings to complement a column extraction test program with the purpose of assessing the potential of arsenic mobilization from the tailings. Two types of tailings samples (i.e., exposed tailings from the impoundment area and water covered tailings samples) were subjected to column tests under standing water cover and with no water cover but weekly flow-through flushing. The tailings have a uniform size distribution. The samples are characterized by high Fe2O3 (44.0 to 68.2 %) and As (3.7 to 4.4w%) concentrations. Ferric hydroxides are the dominant species that are mostly amorphous or cryptocrystalline. Arsenopyrite, scorodite, an Fe-Ca arsenate hydrate phase, an Fe-Bi-As phase and ferric hydroxides are the arsenic-bearing minerals. Arsenic is essentially contained in Ca-As goethite, Fe-Ca arsenate hydrate phase and scorodite. Goethite, although containing low levels of arsenic, could be a significant arsenic-bearing phase because of its high abundance. There does not appear to be any significant chemical or mineralogical difference between the original exposed tailings and the material left underwater with no flow-through for over a year. There are differences in terms of CaO, Fe2O3, SiO,, As, goethite, scorodite, calcite and dolomite concentrations between the exposed tailings and the column material after undergoing approximately two-year flow-through and aggressive leach tests. These differences are likely to be resulting from a combination of different column test conditions and sampling or heterogeneity of the material.

Increasing demand for high-grade manganese (Mn) ore has led to the practice of selective mining, which produced low-grade Mn ore as waste and in the long term could lead to environmental pollution. Research had been carried out to extract Mn from low-grade ore, which mostly exists as black Mn(IV) oxide (MnO2). Most extraction methods involved the reduction of insoluble MnO2 to soluble Mn2+ in acidic media. Metals other than Mn are also transferred to the pregnant leach solution (PLS) during the leaching process, especially iron (Fe). Due to high Mn concentration in PLS, precipitation is considered the best method to isolate Mn from PLS compared with solvent extraction and ion exchange/absorption. However, due to unselective leaching, the presence of Fe in the PLS makes the Mn separation and purification difficult. Therefore, in this research, the parameters affecting the selectivity of Mn over Fe in leaching process were investigated.

The lacustrine Green River Formation of Eocene age in the Green River Basin, southwest Wyoming, contains the world&apos;s large resource of natural sodium carbonate in bedded trona (Na2CO3? NaHCO3? 2H2O). In this study, 126 billion tons are estimated to be present in 22 beds, ranging from 4 to 36 feet in thickness. These 22 beds underlie areas of about 50 to more than 775 square miles at depths ranging from about 650 to more than 3,000 feet below the surface. The total resource of trona ore in the basin for which drilling information is available is estimated to be about 149 billion short tons. The undeveloped deeper trona beds in the southern part of the basin may be exploitable by solution mining. Additional unevaluated sodium carbonate resources are present in disseminated shortite in strata interbedded with the trona and in shallow sodium carbonate brines in the northeast part of the basin.

In 1967, development of the Cyprus Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit began near Challis, ID. The first mining claims were staked on an intrusive rock out-crop. Exploration continued for 14 years. In 1978, the decision was made to develop the deposit. In Dec. 1980, approval was received for the environmental impact statement and facilities construction and waste rock removal began. By the middle of 1983, 126 Mt (139 million st) of rock had been removed and all facilities completed. Location The Thompson Creek project is located about 58 km (36 miles) southwest of Challis in Custer County, in south central Idaho. The mine and mill are situated between 2.2 and 2.6 km (7,217 and 8,530 ft) in elevation. The project is located in an isolated area. Two aspects of tunnel support design are considered, and for both particular attention is paid to the influence of rock failure around the tunnel on the loads developed on the supports. 1) In general it has not been possible to extend analytical methods for the study of rock failure around tunnels to three dimensions. As a consequence it was not possible to calculate either the influence of the face or the actual sequence of support loading as the face advanced. The finite element method made this extension possible. A simplified analysis of the influence of the face and of the sequence of support installation has been made. The influence of the original stress field and of the rock behaviour on the length of tunnel which can be left unsupported (related to the stand-up time) is shown. The degree to which a 2-dimensional analysis can be used to approximate the final support load is shown to be dependent upon the post-failure behaviour of the rock. 2) Tunnel support design requires a knowledge of the forces and of the -rock displacements which cause stressing and deformation of the support system. A 2-dimensional model incorporating a detailed representation of several support systems, of the rock behaviour in the broken zone and of the interaction between rock and support is given. The model allows the calculation of the stress distribution in the support. The significance of the relative stiffness of support and rock on the stresses developed in the support is shown.

Many mining operations generate seismic signals. They come from blasting and from underground mine failures such as rockbursts, longwall first caves, coal bumps and pillar collapses. Traditionally, seismic motions have been of concern on a local scale because they could create damage to structures at the mine site or at neighboring locations. Recently, there has been much interest in the Comprehensive Nu-clear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). It prohibits any kind of nuclear explosion, anywhere. So distinguishing signals of mining operations from a possible nuclear explosion becomes important. An international monitoring system (IMS) is being implemented to verify the Treaty when it is ratified. It includes a large number of seismic stations capable of recording signals at regional (200 to 2,000 km or 124 to 1,240miles) and teleseismic (more than 2,000 km or 1,240 miles) distances.

This paper presents and describes the South Interceptor Parallel Phase III Contract C93012C, which involved construction of a nominal 2.7 m (9-ft) finished diameter sewer conveyance using both pipe jacking and conventional tunneling methods. Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) excavation was required to minimize the potential for settlement beneath a main rail line, overpass, sensitive wetland, areas of contaminated soils, and nearby structures. Ground conditions predicted in the Geotechnical Baseline Report included low plasticity, clayey silt (40 to 10%) and silty sand (60–90%) with pieces of wood such as logs, stumps, branches and other tree fragments. Soil cover ranged from 2.7 m (9-ft) to 5.4 m (18-ft) over the tunnel crown with a groundwater table between 1.5 m (5-ft) and 3.7 m (12-ft) deep.

The mineral sector is a fundamental part of the U.S. economy. It contributes to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several stages—basic (mining), intermediate processing, manufacturing of finished goods and construction. The estimated growth rate for the real GDP of the United States for 2006 was 3.2 percent. The nominal GDP was about $13.2 trillion. The value of minerals mined in the United States in 2006 rose significantly because of increased unit price for some metals—particularly copper, zinc and other base metals. There was also a significant reduction in metals stocks. Infrastructure expansion and manufacturing in China and India have been absorbing a significant portion of world output.
