The Royal-Mountain King Project is 7.2 kilometers (4.5 miles) northwest of Copperopolis, California. Reserves of 8,250,000 t (9,100,000 st) at 2.32 g/t (0.068 oz/st) gold will be processed at 2500 t/d (2750 st/d) from three pits. Production is scheduled to begin the first quarter of 1989. District geology consists of northwest trending sequences of Jurassic meta-sedimentary and meta-volcanic rocks. Three ore bodies are located along the Hodson fault which trends northwest and dips 40 degrees northeast. The Gold Knoll and North Pit ore bodies are hosted in carbonate and silica altered meta-volcanic rocks whereas the Skyrocket ore body is hosted in quartz stockwork zones in meta-sedimentary rocks. Gold is present as inclusions and micro-veinlets in pyrite.

The extraction of gold from chloride solutions by ion exchange is examined. It is shown that at initial gold concentrations between 1 - 5 ppm, 20 g/l C1- and pH 5, the kinetics of loading on weak base resins are slightly slower than those observed with activated charcoal. Equilibrium loading of auric chloride varies considerably as a function of pH from one resin to another. For all of the resins studied, nearly complete gold extraction was achieved between pH 2 and pH 6.5. Sodium hypochlorite was found to exhibit a slight effect on the equilibrium loading of gold chloride.

The term "fatigue" in mechanics, is used to refer to reduction in the strength of a material subjected to fluctuating or alternating stresses. Stresses that vary with time are called fluctuating stresses and if during fluctuation the stresses also change sign, they are called alternating stresses. In the field of rock mechanics, the term fatigue (static fatigue) has often been misused to refer to failure of geologic materials in time domain under constant load. To avoid confusion, we use the ten cyclic fatigue here to refer to failure of rock under alternating or fluctuating stresses. Fatigue in metals has been studied for over 100 years. Fatigue properties of geologic materials have, however, received little attention in the past. This is probably because until recently very little was known in regard to the behavior of geologic materials even under static loading. Secondly, suitable equipment for conducting cyclic fatigue experiments was not available until quite recently. A few cyclic fatigue studies have been undertaken on geologic materials to relate it to percussive or rotary drilling mechanisms (e. g. Grover et a11*; Burdine2). The results of these studies were inconclusive due to limited effort. Cyclic fatigue in concrete has been studied more extensively than geologic materials (e.g. Nordby3, Gray et al 4 and Bennett et a15) and mechanisms of fatigue in concrete are better understood than in geologic materials.

Many questions exist within the geotechnical industry as to the applicability of Strength Reduction Factor (SRF) values to the design acceptance criteria (DAC) of mining operations. There are many factors that contribute to changes in the SRF estimate, some of which are numerical (e.g. dilation angle) and some of which are geometric (e.g. model grid size)[1]. Numerous studies have confirmed equivalent values of SRF and FOS are found for soil slopes of limited height as presented in, [2] and [3]. However, significant deviation of the SRF value was observed for highly cohesive materials (rock slopes) of heights typically encountered in mining, [4]. This paper builds on the work presented in [4], providing a more rigorous examination of the modeling parameters that control the SRF estimate. The failure mechanism assumed for this study was a simple circular shear surface in a uniform material. Both LEM and numerical methods are suited well for analysis of this failure mechanism. A parametric study was completed to evaluate and test the relationships of key numerical variables that affect the estimated value of the SRF using Itasca’s Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLACTM) software. The effect of groundwater has been tested and may be significant but is not presented as part of this body of work for brevity and simplicity of presentation.

Pittsburgh No. 8 coal, cleaned by conventional froth flotation, was oxidized in a 2-L Parr stirred bench-top autoclave. Autoclave tests were carried out for up to 5 hrs under the following conditions: 150 to 225ºC, 60 to 500 psi 02 and 15 to 60 g of coal per 600 mL of distilled water. The oxidation of coal was evaluated by measuring the total acidic group formed on the surface of the coal and by measuring the adsorption (under standard conditions) of calcium ion from a solution. The degree of oxidation of the coal increased continuously, without much leveling off, with increasing oxygen pressure. With increasing temperature, the oxidation of the coal increased sharply between 150 to 175ºC and then leveled off above 175 °C. The adsorption of calcium was >3% on coal oxidized under the most favorable conditions. The adsorption of calcium on coal increased sharply with increasing equilibrium pH. The loss in Btu was found to be sensitive to oxidation temperature. This study concluded that the optimum oxidation of coal is achieved over 3 hrs at high oxygen pressures (e.g., 500 psi) at ~170ºC. This study also concluded that, when measured in terms of calcium adsorption, Btu loss and reaction time, the oxidation achieved in an autoclave is far superior to that achieved in a fluidized bed.

Introduction On the banks of the Columbia River, about halfway between Seattle and Spokane, sits Wenatchee, WA. It calls itself "the apple capital of the world." And it has a gold mining history that dates back to the 1880s. It was just outside Wenatchee - three blocks outside, to be exact-that Asamera recently dedicated its $60 million Cannon underground gold mine. At full production, it is estimated the Cannon mine will yield between 5 and 5.6 t/a (160,000 and 180,000 oz per year) of gold. That would make Cannon the largest North American underground gold mine to be brought into production this year. Cannon should also be among the top 10 of all North American gold producers. Asamera officials project Cannon's operating costs at about $4.8019 ($150 per oz). At that rate, the mine should also be one of the lower cost and most profitable gold mining operations in North America. One reason for low operating costs is low electric power costs. The Cannon operation will be paying about 2.5 cents per kWh for hydroelectric power supplied by the Bonneville Power Authority. Proven and probable ore reserves at Cannon are in excess of 4.7 Mt (5.2 million st). Reserve grades average 7.29 g/t (0.21 oz per st) of gold in three ore zones, in order of discovery - B, B West, and B North. The ore bodies could have been mined by open-pit methods. But underground mining was chosen for environmental reasons. In addition, the rich B North ore body extends beneath a nearby horse stable and arena. The Cannon mine area comprises some 20 km2 (5000 acres) in Chelan County. The mine site is located at the 305 m (1000 ft) elevation in Dry Gulch at the base of the Cascade Mountains. The initial estimate of mine life for the Cannon operation is eight years, depending on gold prices. But Asamera officials believe the Wenatchee area has excellent potential for future gold discoveries. Asamera, Inc. of Calgary, Alberta, owns 51% of the Cannon property, through its wholly-owned Asamera Minerals (US). Breakwater Resources Ltd. of Vancouver, British Columbia owns 49% of the operation. The Cannon mine is named in honor of longtime Asamera, Inc. executive and current company director, geologist Donald G. Can¬non. It was he who first brought the Wenatchee property to Asamera's attention and urged the company to pursue it. Asamera is a major explorer and producer of oil and gas. Its Cannon operation is the largest and most significant to date in its mining division, according to Rob¬ert G. Welty. He is Asamera's chairman and chief executive officer. It should be noted there was an element of serendipity involved in Cannon's development. The development program be¬gan when geologist Cannon visited the Wenatchee area. He was visit¬ing old mining districts. He liked what he saw. The Cannon property was eventually optioned for ex¬ploration, including a modest drilling program.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Homestake Mining Co.'s operations are at Lead, SD. Production from the various methods used are: 1 155 753 t/a (1,274,000 stpy) by open cut-and-fill, 68 039 t/a (75,000 stpy) by square set cut-and-fill, 144242 t/a (159,000 stpy) by shrinkage stoping, 107 048 t/ a (118,000 stpy) by blasthole stoping, and 67 132 t/a (74,000 stpy) in development work for a total of 1 542 214 t/a (1,700,000 stpy). Mining takes place from the 616-m (2000-ft) level to the 2073-m (6800 ft) level (Fig. 1). The average travel time to the stope is 45 min. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size, Shape, and Dip of Ore Body Six major ledges varying from 914 m (3000 ft) long by 228.6 m (750 ft) wide to 305 m (1000 ft) long by 122 m (400 ft) wide are mined. Within these ledges are irregular-shaped areas of varying sizes. These ledges dip at approximately 1.2 rad (70°) to the east and plunge to the south from 0.26 to 1.57 rad (15° to 90°). Ground Conditions The ore is cummingtonite (chlorite schist) which is very competent except for major bedding planes and fracture patterns. The footwall is a slate but because of the dip presents very few problems. The hanging wall is also a slate which because of the dip and bedding is very weak and requires considerable rockbolting. No problem has been encountered with rock bursts to a depth of 2438 m (8000 ft). Ore Value The ore values vary somewhat from ledge to ledge, but the average ore delivered to the mill is approxi¬mately 6.2 g (0.2 oz) of gold per ton. A small amount of silver is the only byproduct of this operation. Annual production of gold is approximately 10 575 183 g (340,000 troy oz). Production Requirements The mine has a mill capacity of approximately 1 723 651 t (1,900,000 st) but because of several fac¬tors (manpower, depth, etc.) this mill capacity has not been attainable for the past several years.

The copper catalyzed gold oxidation and reduction mechanisms in ammonium thiosulfate solution were investigated by Eh-pH diagram based on the optimum reagent combination for 60 mass% -75 µm silicate ore at 16g/t Au with the maximum gold extraction of 92% and the minimum ammonium thiosulfate consumption of 23 kg/t-ore for 24 hour’s leaching at ambient temperature. The gold recovery by cementation was nearly 100% by Zn and Al powders at Metal/Au mass ratio of 30, and around 95% by Cu powder at Cu/Au+ mass ratio of 50. In order to oxidize the gold efficiently with the less thiosulfate consumption, the stable region of [Cu(NH3)4]2+ should be as wide as possible in the region, where [Cu(S2O3)2]3- was more stable than [Cu(NH3)2]+. In order to reduce gold from the pregnant solution with the less metal powder’s (Zn, Cu, Al) consumption, the stable region of [Cu(S2O3)2]3- should be wider than [Cu(NH3)2]+ on copper precipitation. Zinc powder may recover gold more efficiently than copper powder with the similar trend on the effect of ammonia, copper and thiosulfate. However, the large amount of copper will be co-precipitated along with gold since the stability of zinc ammine and thiosulfate complexes are higher than that of copper’s. Aluminium may reduce gold efficiently at higher thiosulfate concentration and pH. These results were confirmed and compared with the optimum reagent combination for finer grind sample at 100 mass% -75 µm, which is the optimum ore size for the standard cyanidation at 1.0 g/ l NaCN to obtain about 95% gold extraction. The optimum reagent combination was concluded as 0.5 mol/l NH4OH, 0.0001 mol/l CuSO4*5H2O and 0.05 mol/l (NH4)2S2O3 with the result of 94% gold extraction and 3kg/t-ore of ammonium thiosulfate consumption. Gold and copper stabilities were well agreed with the result of coarser grind ore thermodynamically. The lower reagent combination will reduce gold oxidation power, but significantly minimize the reagent consumption. From this pregnant solution, nearly 100% of gold was successfully recovered by zinc precipitation at Zn/Au+ mass ratio of 30. Aluminium and copper precipitations resulted in less than 40% of gold recovery at Metal/Gold mass ratio of 30. The reagent consumption cost on this lower reagent combination followed by zinc precipitation was $1.6/t-ore, while the cyanidation was $3.1/t-ore. Thiosulfate oxidation mechanism indicated the similarity to Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction.

The key to unlocking value is to find opportunity where others have missed it. How does a company find value in a thoroughly explored asset? This article explores the approach taken by one company and the results it achieved from working this problem. The town of Shafter is located on a small bend in the road in west Texas' Big Bend Country. Its past emulates the glory days of so many other mining camps. A discovery was made, fortunes were built and World War II shut down the operation. The Shafter deposit continues to be one of the larg¬est undeveloped primary silver deposits in North America. Gold Fields Mining Co. recognized the area's potential in 1977 and embarked on studies to reopen and develop the district. Gold Fields spent $16 million on the Shafter project. It drilled more than 86,240 m (282,940 ft) in 475 holes, sunk two shafts and developed 1,550 m (5,100 ft) of underground workings. Today, the mothballed 447-kW (600-hp), single-drum Nordberg hoist and permanent production-type, single-compartment headframe continue to crown the shaft. Other buildings onsite house compressors, mine pumps, spare parts, drill core and other supplies. All these items look as though they arrived yesterday. By 1982, Gold Fields had completed an extensive feasibility study with ambitions to. construct a 1.36-kt/d (1,500-stpd) agitated cyanidation mill and base metal gravity circuit. Reserves at Shafter stand at 4.23 Mt (4.67 million st) grading 193.5 g/t (5.65 oz/st) silver. Gold Fields planned to produce 71.5 t/a (2.3 million oz/year) of silver at a head grade of 196.2 g/t (5.73 oz/st) silver with a 77% recovery rate. Cash costs were projected to be $5.54/oz with an anticipated initial and total capital cost of $46.2 million and $51.3 million (1984 dollars), respectively. The study assumed a silver price of $8.60/oz that has not been seen since the Hunt brothers quit buying silver. When silver prices declined, Gold Fields put the property up for sale.

The availability of a fluid whose gross behavior sharply changes in a magnetic field without affecting its rheologic characteristics has been recently demonstrated. A colloidal solution of a ferrimagnetic material, such as magnetite, in a liquid that is immiscible with and lighter than water is projected for use in selective separation of particles according to their density spectrum in a continuous fashion. Magnetic levitation forces were created as an antigravity field when the fluid was properly placed in an inhomogeneous magnetic field. Five spherical non¬magnetic objects with densities ranging from 2.70 to 11.35 gram cm ' were made to float or submerge at will in a 0.96-gram cm-3 density fluid placed at vertical magnetic field gradients ranging from 0.2 to I kilooersted cm-1. The magnetic levitation farce in dyne cm-3 was found to vary linearly as a function of the object-fluid density mismatch with a slope equal to one g, the acceleration due to gravity.

The inability to economically separate Fe3+(aq) from a variety of liquid effluents is a major Concern for the primary metals industry. A unique solvent extraction process, galvanic stripping, has been developed to address this problem. The galvanic stripping of iron from D2EHPA using only a 5~10 g/L H2SO4 solution is achieved after Fe3+ is directly reduced to Fee, in the organic phase using zinc metal additions. To date, the primary focus of the laboratory research has been on optimizing the parameters that control iron removal. The results from these studies have now been, used to make a preliminary design for a continuous flow process that is envisioned for zinc industrial applications. Specific quantitative data are shown for the use of a Zn-Ph cellos° in the iron-reams al process. Some introductory results on electrochemical potential measurements and impurity distribution with solution cycling are also giiven.

Bacterial populations play an active role in mineral weathering in subsurface and near-surface environments e.g., supergene enrichment of Cu at Morenci, AZ. An in vitro bacterial biofilm model was used to examine the interaction between Sporosarcina ureae and ionic gold (which is toxic) or amino acid-gold complexes in gold mobility. The immobilization of ionic gold was between 80-90% for 1 week but as the available, cellular reactive sites became saturated immobilization decreased to 14% within 2 weeks. In the asparagine-gold system, gold immobilization occurred at a high rate (80-90%) throughout the experiment with limited toxicity towards Sporosarcina ureae.

Considerable amounts of Fe3+ ions are released into solution when coal is exposed to 1-3 M acid solutions. These ions superficially oxidize the coal surface, and are reduced to Fe2+ ions. When provisions are made to generate the Fe3+ ions in solution, e.g., by inserting an anode whose potential is above the reversible potential for the Fe3+/Fe2+ couple, considerable amounts of mineral matter are liberated from the coal matrix. With many eastern U.S. bituminous coals, this mineral liberation is achieved selectively without significant breakage of the coal. It is believed that this process is induced by the osmotic pressure set-up in the crevices between the mineral matter and coal that are exposed to the solution. A theoretical model predicting the osmotic pressure is presented in this work, along with some results obtained with different coal samples.

The Jabali zinc deposit, in Yemen, contains at least 9.4 Mt at a grade of 10.7% zinc, 2.2% lead and 77g/t silver. The zinc occurs as smithsonite with minor hydrozincite. The Jabali ore does not produce a zinc concentrate of sufficient grade to be acceptable to conventional smelter/refineries, and it has been necessary to formulate a less conventional development plan. This involves the construction of a mine and concentrator at Jabali and a metal production facility using a new flowsheet designed specifically for the treatment of oxide material, at Yanbu, in Saudi Arabia. In order to give the facility the necessary economies of scale, the Jabali concentrate will be supplemented by feed from other deposits, this may be either oxide or sulphide material. The paper outlines the geology and proposed mining and treatment operations at Jabali, the flowsheet for Yanbu and presents preliminary costs for both operations

In early 1970, General Mills Chemicals, Inc. announced the availability of en improved liquid ion exchange reagent, LIX® 64N, for the recovery of copper from various solutions, such as dump leach liquors. LIX 64N has been shown to be a considerable advance over LIX 64, and is presently in use in three commercial plants. Results have been very gratifying. For example, one of the plants was designed for operational production of 40,000 pounds copper per day, and in fact reached this output within the third week following startup of the plant. In addition to the operating plants, another is scheduled to come on stream this month with L D( 64N being used to extract and recover both copper and nickel. The chemical properties and operating characteristics of this reagent have been fully described in a previous paper. 1 LIX 64N is quite an effective and selective extractint for copper, even with copper contents as high as 15 g/l, but the reagent is somewhat limited in pH range, and loses some of its extraction efficiency as the pH drops below 0.8. Liquors derived from vat leaching, electrolytic tankhouae bleed streams, or some of the new leach schemes derived to solubilize copper from sulfide concentrates are examples of the liquors that present major problems when treated via liquid ion exchange. LIX 64N could extract some of the copper from such streams, but recovery was limited to about 75 percent. Also, in some parts of the world there are streams which are relatively low in copper (-5 g/l) but which are very high in acid (25-50 g/1 H2SO4). Again, LIX 64N can attain only about 75 percent recovery from such streams. A thorough Life Cycle Assessment of ilmenite extraction and processing to yield synthetic rutile (ERMS/EARS process) was performed according to ISO norms 14040 and updates. The LCA includes the parallel application of selected environmental impact assessment methods (as illustrated in Ulgiati et al. [1]), the results of which are compared and discussed. A MI value of 16 kg of abiotic matter per kg of output rutile is calculated, which is largely determined by the amount of coal that is employed in the reduction and drying steps. The Gross Energy Requirement is 3.33 * 107 MJ/kg, a value which we found to be comparable with that previously calculated by us for alumina. Finally, the increase factor of the Emergy Intensity from the raw mineral to the marketed rutile is 3.19, which points to a comparatively medium-low requirement for indirect environmental support. GWP and AP were calculated to be respectively 1.89 kg(CO2eq)/kg and 12.7 g(SO2eq)/kg.

The effects of eight independent variables on froth flotation product yield, ash content, and coal recovery were studied using laboratory batch flotation of 0.6 am x 0 coal. The eight flotation variables investigated were air feed rate, pre-dispersion of collector oil, impeller speed, product collection time, initial solids concentration, collector conditioning time, frother (methyl isobutyl carbinol) concentration, and collector (No. 2 fuel oil) dosage. The two-level Plackett-Burman screening design and the three-level Box-Behnken design were used. Within the ranges studied, air feed rate had no effect on product yield. Pre-dispersion of collector oil, impeller speed, product collection time, initial solids concentration, and collector conditioning time showed only minor effects on the product yield and quality. Frother concentration (mg/L) in the process water and collector oil dosage (g/kg) were shown to be the dominant independent variables in coal froth flotation. Flotation experiments that vary initial solids concentration at constant frother dosage (g/kg) confound the effects of frother concentration (mg/L) and solids concentration. The dominating effects of frother concentration and oil dosage on coal recovery and froth product ash content are illustrated with three-dimensional plots. The relationship between froth product ash and coal recovery is also clearly illustrated by the flotation data.

Thoron daughter WL&apos;s measured by alpha-spectroscopy and the Kusnetz method are about one-half those of radon daughter WL&apos;s in a uranium mine in Canada.1 A diffusion model can account for the relative concentrations.l Since the Kusnetz technique is most widely used for measuring radon daughter WL&apos;s in uranium mines, a general procedure is derived to extend this method to measurement of WL&apos;s of radon and thoron daughters in air containing their mixtures. Coté P. and Townsend M.G., 1981. A procedure is also suggested for counting radon and thoron daughters by 3-channel [a]-spectroscopy. Errors in WL(Rn) are calculated for standard radon daughter counting procedures when a-decay of both thoron and radon daughters is attributed to radon daughters alone. Providing overall counting times are short, [<]30 min, these errors are generally small. The precision of ß -counting methods is also investigated. A portable 3-channel alpha spectrometer for measurement of radon and thoron daughters in uranium mines or homes is described, Carson D.W., 1979. The computer programs for analyzing the data to give, depending on the mode employed, some or all of the concentrations RaA, RaB, RaC, ThB, ThC and WL of radon and thoron daughters by alpha spectrometric, modified Kusnetz, Rolle and Tsivolglov methods are presented.(l) A commercial apparatus, based on the above prototype, incorporating a microprocessor and built under contract to EMR is now available.(2) A number of personal radiation dosimeters for miners are now being tested in mines. One of these is the CEA dosimeter which uses the track-etch film method, Duport P., Chapuis A.M. and Pradel J., 1979. An apparatus for rapid reading of track-etch films by the spark technique has been described previously, Cross W.G. and Thomasino L., 1970 and Huang V.F., 1975. We have developed such an apparatus for rapid semi-automatic reading of films exposed to radiation from mixtures of radon and thoron daughters in CEA dosimeters. The films used, Kodak LR 115 Type II Strippable, may be stripped rapidly and easily, for counting after irradiation and developing, by use of a special punch and suction technique. The method promises to provide an inexpensive and rapid technique for reading large quantities of personal dosimeter films. However, the present CEA dosimeter has faults in design, leading to a contamination problem. Those films that show contamination cannot be read by automatic means. A commercial apparatus based on the above prototype spark counter and built under contract to EMR is now available.3 1. These computer programs are available on request. 2. Mill #4 processes mildly refractory ore from Carlin Trend deposits. Diagnostic analysis of plant operating data was used to generate a mathematical model containing the important parameters influencing gold recovery. The model was used to direct modifications to plant operating practice. The cyanide-dosing strategy was changed to reduce gold losses from preg-robbing and to cut reagent consumption. A finer grind was achieved without capital investment. The density in the carbon-in-leach circuit was lowered, and tighter control was exercised over the plant throughput. A procedure has been developed for the removal of zinc from acid solutions containing aluminum, silicon, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium and manganese ions and high concentrations of chloride ions. The first step of the procedure involves the precipitation of aluminum and silicon at pH 4.2. The second step, the removal of the zinc as zinc oxide, was studied in detail to get in- sight into the formation of oxychlorides. A diagram was developed giving the conditions at 75O C under which the formation of oxychlorides is avoided. Under optimal conditions a zinc oxide with less than 0.5 weight percent of chloride can be produced from 11 - 16 g/l chloride solutions.
