The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the performance of portable power cables under transient conditions. This research had a twofold purpose: (1) to define the thermal characteristics of electrically overloaded trailing cables, and (2) to conceptualize electrical protection for cables that allows maximum cable efficiency without diminishing electrical safety in underground mines. Several tasks were undertaken in support of these goals during the 3-year research effort. Overload tests ranging from 2 to 12 times rated ampacity were conducted in the Bureau's Mine Electrical Laboratory. Two thermal models of energized type G-GC trailing cables were constructed, one based on thermodynamic theory and the other using empirical data from previous Bureau load tests. The empirical model was then incorporated into an interactive computer program that can assist designers and approvers of mining machines in selecting the appropriate size trailing cable. This program can be the basis for a cable protection system that ensures that cables are not the source of fires, ignitions, burns, or explosions underground.

A rig was constructed to burn 100 to 125 lb of coal per hour at 4,000° F in a cyclone burner with oxygen-enriched air preheated to 1,500° F to ascertain the problems in the coal-fired MHD generation of power. Potassium carbonate was added to the coal at several concentrations up to 1.23 g-moles/kg of coal (17 lb K2C03/100 lb coal). Boiler-tube materials maintained at wall temperatures of 800° to 1,500° F were exposed to the combustion effluent of 1,800° to 2,500° F. Practically complete removal of sulfur dioxide from the stack gas was achieved with the seed addition. Nitric oxide formation followed theoretical expectations at combustion temperatures with some decomposition of the NO occurring as the gas cooled flowing through the system. Nitrates in the fly ash were less than 1.7 percent of the total fixed nitrogen. With aqueous extraction of the fly ash a maximum recovery of 75 percent of the potassium was obtained. Haynes 25 was unattacked at a wall temperature of 1,500° F in combustion gas at 2,500° F; the stainless steels 310, 316, and 446 were resist-ant at a metal temperature of 1,100° F in gas at 2,100° F.

As part of its goal of maintaining an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines has studied the removal of iron from simulated aluminum nitrate leach liquors by solvent extraction. Iron must be removed from aluminum nitrate liquor produced by leaching calcined kaolinitic clay with HN03 to reduce the iron level in alumina to less than 0.02 wt-pct Fe203 for use in reduction cells. The parameters reported are for (1) extracting iron from a feed containing 1.5 g/l Fe with di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (EHPA), (2) stripping loaded organic phase with 20-pct HCI, and (3) water washing of loaded and stripped organic phase. Recommended operating conditions are two extraction stages using 15 vol-pct EHPA in kerosene and three stripping stages using 20-pct HCI. Results are also given for tests using other extractants and stripping agents.

A metal diaphragm pressure relay system was constructed to measure vapor pressures of the metal halides, oxyhalides, and other substances at temperatures up to 700° or 800° C. The vapor pressure of arsenic (III) oxide (As2O3) was determined to verify the reliability of the apparatus for such measurements. The data for the liquid AS2 Os (2820 to 4830 C) are represented by the equation, log Pmm = 6.875 - 2,929/T, from which the normal boiling point was calculated to be 461° C. The heat of vaporization calculated from this equation was 13.40 ±0.09 kcal/g mole As4OS and is essentially constant over the interval studied. The melting point of the octahedral arsenic (III) oxide was determined to be 278° C from the inter-section of the solid and liquid vapor pressure curves, A thermal analysis apparatus is also described by which melting and transition temperatures could be checked by a method independent of vapor pressure data. The melting points of the monoclinic and octahedral forms were determined to be 314.4 ±1.4° C and 278 ±5° C, respectively.

Surface vibrations of ground, rock, and structures resulting from blasting or other sources are often measured with portable seismographs. These instruments are usually supported by a three-point mount or tripod which is simply placed on a horizontal surface on which vibration levels are to be measured. The rigid-body motion of a tripod-supported seismograph is considered from the point of view that there should be no slippage of the feet with respect to the surface and none of the feet should leave the surface as a result of imparted motion. From these studies the following design criteria are deduced which assure that the seismograph will respond accurately to vibration levels as large as 1/2 g.:3/ First, the coefficient of friction between the feet and the surface on which the instrument rests should be as large as possible, preferably approaching unity; second, the center of gravity of the instrument should be vertically above the centroid of the three-point mount; and third, the vertical distance between the center of gravity of the instrument and the centroid of the three points of contact with the surface should be less than the perpendicular distance between the centroid point and anyone of the three sides of the triangle formed by the three points of contact. Portable seismographs that do not satisfy these conditions should be clamped to the surface if vibration levels above 0.1 g. are to be recorded.

The solubilities of sideronatrite [Na2Fe(OH)(SO4)2?3H20] and ferrinatrite [Na3Fe(SO4),&apos;3H2O] were determined by the Bureau of Mines in the Na2SO4-Fe2O3-H2SO4-H20 system at 25°, 40°, 60°, and 90° C. The solution compositions investigated ranged from Na+-Fe&apos;+ mol ratios of 0.5 to >100 (Na2SO4 saturation) and H+ -SO4 2-mol ratios of 0 to 1. O. The results are presented in the form of contour plots. The solubilities were determined by seeding supersaturated solutions of known composition with the specified solid phase to precipitate a substantial amount of solid. Water was then added in small portions to the solution until the last portion of the solid dissolved. Equilibration times at 25°, 40°, 60°, and 90° C were 2 days, 1 day, 8 to 16 h, and 2 to 4 h, respectively. The accuracy of the solubility data is estimated to be 1 to 2 pet. Low iron solubilities of <0.36 pct Fe2(SO4)&apos;, or 1 g Fe/kg solution, were obtained in solutions containing at least 8 pet Na2SO4 in the absence of H2SO4 or a total of at least 36 to 38 pet Na2SO4 + H2SO4 at high acidity. The filterability and density of sideronatrite and ferrinatrite in comparison with other iron compounds are reported. These compounds are suitable vehicles for iron removal in Na2SO4-rieh solutions. Additional solubility data on the Na2SO4-H2SO4-H20 system were also obtained.

This experiment, one of a series on underground gasification of coal, was an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines of hydraulic fracturing as a means of increasing the air acceptance of a coalbed to permit introducing combustion air and removing product gases. Specific objectives of the investigation included: (1) Fracturing a coalbed; (2) determining the distance the coal was physically affected; (3) ascertaining the effect of the fracture on air acceptance of the coalbed; and (4) gasifying the coal. The coal was fractured with a fluid consisting of 15,000 lb. of sand mixed with 10,000 gal. of fuel oil and 5,000 gal. of kerosine, injected at pressures up to 900 p.s.i.g. and rates up to 425 g.p.m. The oil served as the fracturing medium, and the sand as a propping agent to hold the fracture open. From the fracture point, (the place in the bed where the fluid was injected), the fracture extended 200 ft. or more along the face cleats, somewhat less along the butt. cleats, and was confined to the coalbed. At the fracture point, the bed accepted about 500 std. c.f.m. of air, which was an etghtyfold increase. Fracture effects were extensive, as airflow was noted from old mine workings and outcrops 600 to 800 ft. from the fracture point. It is probable the actual fracture was much less than 600 ft. and that normal coalbed permeability beyond the fracture limits was responsible for this flow. This indicated that effects of the fracture extended beyond the area of coal physically affected. Although no attempt was made to gasify coal more than 200 ft. away, these effects plus the natural permeability of the bed likely would permit combustion beyond the outer limit of the fracture. As these experiments continued for more than 2 years, and greater air acceptance due to the fracture was observed at the beginning of each test, it is apparent that the effects of the fracturing persist for a considerable time.

"The Johnny Bull and Silver Knight claims were selected for exploratory diamond drilling after having been examined by the Bureau of Mines 3./The property was considered attractive for two reasons: (1) A prominent outcrop, recognized as an extension of the Tennessee vein, persisted over a distance of 2,000 feet across the claims; (2) its proximity to the known ore shoots in the Tennessee-Schuylkill mine, one of the largest zinc-load producers in Arizona.Actual drilling was started September 18 and was terminated December 8, 1943. Eight holes, aggregating 2,979.5 feet, were drilled with two machines. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resource to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. .1. The purification pilot plant and the equipment, solution, and gas cycle used for removing hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide are described. 2. As sulfur recovery is necessary in any large Fischer-Tropsch plant, pilot-plant runs were made at 300 p.s.i.g. to study the efficiency of tri-ethanolamine solutions in removing selectively hydrogen sulfide from gases containing varying amounts of carbon dioxide. 3. Aqueous solutions of TEA of 20, 30; 35, and 50 percent were investi¬gated. Data indicate that 30 to 35 percent is the optimum concentration if both selectivity and economy are considered. Slightly better selectivity is obtained with the.20 percent solution, but steam consumption is greater owing to the higher solution rates. Results from our pilot plant runs indicate that a 50 percent solution not only produces an acid gas of lower hydrogen sulfide content but also requires high solution rates to effect hydrogen sulfide purification. 4. Data from 37 runs using TEA are presented in tabular form. In addition, the data are correlated and presented in three sets of curves. By using these curves, it is possible to calculate the compositions of the purified and acid gases for various raw gas mixtures. 5. In cooperation with the Southern Natural Gas Co., investigations were carried out at 300 p.s.i.g. on the simultaneous removal of hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide, from gases using various concentrations of diethanolamine. 6. Data from 17 runs employing 20, 30, and 40 percent DEA are reported in both tabular and graphic form. 7. A comparison of the data from one DEA run made at 200 p.s.i.g. with those from the runs operating at 30O p.s.i.g. shows float the absorption capacity of the solution, and, hence, the steam requirements per gallon are about the sage for both pressures. .The only real advantage of the higher pressure is the additional volume of gas that can be treated. 8. The quantity of steam needed to reactivate fouled TEA and DEA solutions increased as the reactivator pressure was increased about 1,0 to 1.1 pounds of steam was required for each gallon of circulating solution when the reactivator was operated at 5 p.s.i.g. 9. A curve is included that shows the effect of the hydrogen sulfide con-centration in a lean 35 percent TEA solution on the hydrogen sulfide content of the purified gas and on steam consumption for reactivation. 10. Both TEA and DEA reduced the organic sulfur content of the raw synthesis gas considerably. Analyses of the lean amine solutions showed a gradual build up of sulfur compounds, indicating that the compounds formed by the amines and organic sulfur do not break down under the ordinary operating conditions of the reactivator. 11. Considerable operating difficulty was encountered in the pilot plant owing to foaming of the amine solutions. Laboratory experiments in which the effectiveness of certain antifoam agents was studied showed Alkaterge C to be most promising for the particular conditions studied.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the sequence of principal chemical reactions taking place during the roasting of covellite (CuS). Practically all covellite is converted to digenite (Cul.SS) before oxidation to Cu20 begins. Part of the Cu2O is then converted to CuO, which in turn forms CuS04 through CuO?CuS04 as an intermediary. CuS04 and CuO&apos;CuS04 decompose at 600° to 700° C to yield CuO and S03 (g) as final products. An overall mechanism is proposed for chemical reactions occurring at different interfaces of partially oxidized CuS pellets.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of lignite char for producing carbon disulfide; CS2 production rates were as high as when wood charcoal was used as raw material. The maximum space velocity for CS2 produced in the bench-scale study was 9,280 hour-1, reacting sulfur and lignite char at 792° C. The reaction temperature and the temperature at which the char was carbonized were the two most important factors in determining CS2 production rates. Increasing the carbonization temperature in nitrogen from 400° to 900° C advanced the temperature at which carbon disulfide was first produced from 550° to 850° C. The average activation energy for reacting chars with sulfur was 44,000 cal/g mole. The reaction was first order with respect to the partial pressure of sulfur. Increasing the rate of sulfur admission caused a decrease in rate of production at otherwise similar conditions. Rates were not affected by either char size or sodium carbonate catalysis. High space velocities at moderate temperatures using inexpensive lignite chars could offer an economic advantage in the manufacture of carbon disulfide provided that yields were attractive.

"INTRODUCTION This is the fourth report of investigations dealing with the cooperative tests between the Bureau of Mines and industry on the use of electrolytic manganese in steelmaking. The first report dealt with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steel 3/ the second with its use in acid electric steel practice, 4/ and the third with its use in low-carbon basic open-hearth steelmaking. 2/ A résumé of those investigations E7 appeared in the magazine STEEL. 5/ The present report deals with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of four types of stainless steel and the new Timken 16-25-6 alloy. The Bureau of Mines supplied The Timken Roller Bearing Co. with 62,000 pounds of electrolytic manganese for use in the tests.The electrolytic manganese was produced at the Bureau of Mines pilot plant, Boulder City, Nev., by the process developed by the Bureau and described in Bulletin 463, Operation of Electrolytic Manganese Pilot Plant, Boulder City, Nev., by J. H. Jacobs. J. W. Hunter, W. H. Yarroll, P. E. Churchward, R. G. Knickerbocker, R. W. Lewis, H.A. Heller, and J. H. Linck. The workcarried out under the direction of R. S. The recovery of zinc from oxidized zinc minerals by the caustic soda leach and electrolytic or chemical precipitation was investigated . With the exception of willemite ( 2 ZnO • Si0₂ ) oxidized zinc minerals were readily soluble in 180 to 240 g / 1 NaOH solutions . A high- grade zinc flake was recovered electrolytically from solutions which had been treated with zinc powder to precipitate copper and lead . Solutions were recycled to the leach stage with a recovery of about 85 percent of the zinc from an ore containing 21.2 percent zinc . Electrolysis was conducted at a current density of 120 amp / ft2 with a power consumption of about 1.5 kwhr /lb zinc . Zinc was also recovered from leach solutions by dilution of the solutions , carbonation of the solution , or the addition of sulfur to boiling solutions . A dilution ratio of 5 : 1 precipitated 59 percent of the zinc in 9 days . Carbonation of the solutions precipitated the zinc as zinc oxide ( ZnO ) and solutions could be recausticized for recycling . Zinc precipitated as the sulfide with sulfur was easily filtered and washed . Approximately half of the sulfur added to solutions was lost in the form of sodium thiosulfate ( Na S₂03 ) .

A modified transpiration apparatus was devised by the Bureau of Mines to permit rapid and accurate measure of the vapor transport and vapor diffusion coefficients of antimony sulfide (Sb2S3) and other compounds at temperatures to 1,045 K. The apparatus was equipped with dual condensers and valves to switch the flow of vapor in a fraction of a second from one condenser to the other, thus allowing short-interval sampling under equilibrium conditions. Reliability of the technique was established by measuring the vapor pressure of ZnC12 as a function of temperature and comparing the results with published data. As part of an investigation of the vapor concentrations and species of accessory element sulfides associated with copper and zinc smelting, the apparatus was used to measure the rate of vapor transport and diffusion coefficients of vapor over liquid Sb2S3 as a function of temperature between 870 and 1,045 K. The calculated vapor density was combined with published direct measurements of vapor pressure to calculate the average molecular weight of the gaseous species. Average molecular weight of the vapor in equilibrium with Sb2S3 ranged from 286 to 112 g/mol over the temperature range studied.

This report, authorized under Contract Number H0220065, Amendment Number Six, documents the results of an investigation of lighting system modifications and designs for working place illumination in high and low coal entries of underground coal mines. The portable and machine mounted system designs, both modified and prototype, represent a continuation of work performed under Contract Number H0111403, Amendment Number One. See the Final Technical Report dated May 26, 1972 for detailed information concerning this prior Contract. All modified and prototype systems met the performance requirements of Bureau of Mines Specification 2G, as proved by test. In addition, the systems met the requirement for illumination, as specified in the Contract and in the proposed standards which were generated in response to Public Law 91-173.

The Bureau of Mines has carried out experimental and theoretical studies with prilled and pulverized ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) mixtures containing varying amounts of fuel oil in an attempt to quantify the effects of stoichiometric composition, nonideal detonation behavior, and expansion volume on the production of CO, NO, and N02 fumes. Experimental fume measurements were obtained in the Bureau&apos;s large closed gallery facility (7.2 X 104 liter expansion chamber) and in the standard Crawshaw-Jones apparatus (90--liter expansion shamber) using a prepackaged charge configuration containing about 450 g of explosive.4 The theoretical calculation of toxic fumes was achieved with an equilibrium detonation code called "TIGER,," Contrary to initial expectations, the NOx (= NO + N02) fumes from the large gallery test were found to be in essential agreement with the Crawshaw-Jones results. It was also concluded that (1) "TIGER" calculations offer a good approach to the prediction of toxic fumes; (2) there is a basic problem in extrapolating laboratory measurements of CO fumes to mine conditions--this being due to postdetonation oxidation of CO to CO2; and (3) the detonation velocity decay rate of an explosive is a useful experimental parameter for correlating toxic fumes production with nonideal detonation behavior.

Repeated exposure to hand-arm vibration through the use of vibrating hand tools can result in the development of the disorder known as hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS; (1,3)). One of the hallmark symptoms of HAVS is cold-induced peripheral vasospasms that result in finger blanching (4). Although the vascular and neural pathology associated with vasospasms has been described, little is known about cellular mechanisms leading to this damage (4). To understand how vibration may alter vascular and neural physiology and anatomy, rats were exposed to a single bout of tail vibration and the molecular responses of neural and vascular tissues were measured to determine if there are immediate or sustained affects of vibration that may underlie longer term changes in physiology. Methods Experiment 1. Male Sprague Dawley rats (n = 32, 6 weeks of age) were housed in AAALAC accredited facilities. All procedures were approved by the NIOSH Animal Care and Use Committee and were in compliance with the CDC guidelines for care and use of laboratory animals. Vibration exposures were performed by restraining rats in Broome-style restrainers, and securing their tails to a vibration platform using 6 mm wide straps that were placed over the tail every 3 cm. Restraint control rats were treated in the same manner, except that the tail platform was mounted on isolation blocks and not on a shaker. The vibration exposure was 125 Hz, 49 m/s2, for 4 h. Rats were euthanized with an overdose of pentobarbital (100 mg/kg) 1 h or 24 hours after the exposure. RTqPCR was used to measure transcript levels for endothelin 1 (ET-1), the 3 forms of nitric oxide synthetase (NOS) NOS-1, NOS-2, NOS-3 and norepinephrine receptor subtypes 1D, 2A, 2C, in artery tissue, and to measure calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and nitric oxide synthase-1 (NOS-1) in ventral nerves. Data were analyzed using 2-way ANOVAs. Experiment 2. Male Sprague Dawley rats (n =24, 6 weeks of age) were maintained as described above. Animals were exposed to a single bout of restraint or vibration. Another group of animals served as cage controls. All animals were euthanized 24 h after the exposure, and tail arteries were isolated and frozen. Reactive oxygen species ROS) were measured using electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR). Arteries were homogenized over ice in 1 ml of PBS with protease inhibitor cocktail, using a tissue tearer (Biospecs Products Inc. Racine, WI USA). The sample was split into two 0.5 ml samples. One set had PBS and the spin label hydroxyl-TEMPO [0.1 mM] added while the other set had hydroxyl-TEMPO [1.0 mM] plus the specific hydroxyl radical scavenger, dimethylthiourea (DMTU), added to confirm the presence of the hydroxyl radical. Samples were vortexed and then placed in a flat cell for ESR analysis. The ESR spectrometer settings were: receiver gain, 6.32 x 102; time constant, 0.02 s; modulation amplitude, 1.0 G; scan time, 20 sec; magnetic field, 3490 ± 100 G (2). Data were analyzed using 1-way ANOVAs.

Because of an urgent national need for manganese, the deposits in the Little Florida Mountains of Lune County N. Mex., were visited by O.H. Metzger, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, on June 12 and 13, 1940, accompanied on the second day by S. G. Lasky, a geologist of the Federal Geological Survey. After this preliminary examination, it was recommended that exploratory work be done by the Bureau of Mines on several properties in the district. An exploratory project of trenching, sampling, and core drilling was started by the Bureau of Mines in September 1940 and completed in May 1941.2/ Work was done on three properties - the Luna mine, the American group of claims, and the Manganese Valley mine. The Little Florida manganese district is situated on the eastern slope of the Little Florida Mountains about 2 miles south of U. S. Highway 80-90, 12 to 14 miles southeast of Deming, Luna County, N. Mex. The principal claims comprise the Luna Manganese, American, and Manganese Valley groups.
