Etching solutions containing hexavalent chromium ions (e.g., chromic acid) are used in brass finishing, printed circuit board etching, preparation of plastic for plating, anodizing, and various other industrial surface treatment operations. As the solutions are used, hexavalent chromium ions are reduced to their trivalent state, contaminants accumulate in the solution, and the effective acid concentration is reduced. When the etching rate becomes unsatisfactory for the particular operation, the solutions are discarded. This is a problem because the discarded solutions are pollutants, and because replacing the etching solution is expensive. The Bureau of Mines has developed a process for regenerating these spent solutions and returning them to the surface treatment operation without interrupting the etching process. An electrolysis cell containing anode and cathode compartments that are separated by permeable membranes, is used for regenerating the spent solutions. The spent chromic acid solution is fed to the anode compartment and sui (uric acid is circulated in the cathode compartment. Application of a steady electrical potential of a few volts dc across the electrodes causes the copper ions and other contaminants in the spent solution to migrate through the membrane to the cathode compartment where copper is plated onto the cathode. Zinc and the other contaminants remain in the sulfuric acid. At the same time, the complex, trivalent chromium ions in the spent solution are attracted to the anode where they are oxidized to their original hexavalent state. The regenerated solution in the anode compartment is then recycled back to the plant?s etching operation for reuse.

"Mining is one of the oldest of human occupations. The awareness of occupational illnesses associated with mining, even in ancient times, is evident from the writings of Hippocrates (460-370 BC), Pliny and Elder (AD 23-79), and Galen (AD 131-210). Georgius Agricola (1494-1535), in his De Re Metallica, refers to the diseases of miners and the need for their control through good planning and operating practices and responsible management (Schwerha, 1989). Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), often called Black Lung disease, is an occupational disease which results from inhalation of coal mine dust which usually contains relatively small amounts of free crystalline silica.A pneumoconiosis is best defined as the accumulation of dust in the lungs and the tissue's reaction to its presence [Lapp and Castranova, 1993]. Silicosis is the name given to the fibrotic disease of the lungs caused by the inhalation of dust containing silicon dioxide, primarily in the free crystalline form. Silicosis is the older and more well known of these mineral pneumoconioses. In contrast, CWP was not recognized as different from silicosis until the pivotal work of Collis and Gilchrist [1928].The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) still regards worker exposure to respirable aerosols in mines as the most serious health problem in mining [USBM, 1994]. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is considering recommending a reduction in the standard for occupational exposure to respirable coal mine dust from 2 mg/m3 to 1 mg/m3 [NIOSH, 1993]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) may require new criterion for sampling procedures in the mine that would evaluate the ambient dust concentration in the mine atmosphere based on a single sample, instead of the current practice of averaging five samples (MSHA, 1992; Ramat* 1993). Several high-production longwall mining faces currently have extreme difficulty meeting the existing dust standards, and some already operate at reduced production levels to achieve mandated levels [USBM, 1993]. The importance of adequately protecting the miners from high concentrations of coal mine dust, as well as of reducing the incidence and severity of the Black Lung disease, cannot be overemphasized. The importance stems, first and foremost, from the humanitarian viewpoint and, second, from the perspective of the overall welfare of the coal industry.The histopathologic hallmark of CWP is the coal macule (Balaan, Weber and Banks, 1993). Autopsy or open lung biopsy reveals the coal macule to be an amorphous mass of coal particles, dust-laden pulmonary macrophages, reticulin, and collagen. No pathognomonic signs or symptoms identify workers with CWP. A CWP diagnosis requires that the worker experienced the appropriate dust-exposure setting (e.g., underground coal mining) and duration (usually 10 years or more) and, has the characteristic chest radiograph. Based upon the International Labour Organization (ILO, 1980) international classification, pathologists and radiologists have established case definitions for characterizing the pathology and the appearance of CWP on chest radiography (Weeks, 1993). CWP appears in two principal forms: simple, with small opacities, and complicated, with opacities larger than 10 mm in diameter. For all practical purposes, diagnosis of CWP in the living miner is wholly dependent upon the chest radiograph interpretation."

"INTRODUCTION At various times, North Carolina has supplied small quantities of brown-iron ore to the furnace o the South. Between 1917 and 1920, the quantity reported to the Federal Geological Survey was 126,000 tons. Most of this came from Cherokee County. 3/In furtherance of the program initiated by the Bureau of Mines to develop additional reserve of iron ore during the emergency, the Cherokee County deposits were examined by an engineer 4/ of the Bureau of Mines, and work was recommended on,12 properties.The project was begun in April 1944 and continued intermittently until April 1945, when work was stopped. The development of the potential supply analytic system has advanced to the point that quantitative estimates of economically recoverable resources can be made as the final step of the traditional regional mineral resource assessment process. In 1983, the BOM and the ADGGS jointly developed a methodology to quantitatively assess the potential for undiscovered yet economically recoverable minerals within a designated geographic area. This methodology was first applied in the assessment of the undiscovered mineral potential of the Kantishna Hills, Alaska (White et al., 1987). At that time the assessment procedure combined a series of technical judgements regarding the major geologic, engineering and economic factors that influenced the occurrence and exploitation of mineral resources in the Kantishna Hills area. Since then the methodology has been further developed and enhanced, particularly with respect to the engineering and economic analysis components. The resulting Potential Supply Analysis System (PSAS) was recently used to evaluate the economic potential of selected types of undiscovered precious-metal deposits in the Tonopah quadrangle of Nevada (Gunther, et al., 1988) and, with some enhancements, has been used to estimate the' economic value of the undiscovered mineral potential of the WMNRA/SNCA study area. The PSAS has been designed to address five basic questions about the mineral potential of an area: 1) What alternative states of geologic nature are possible in the area of interest (e.g. How many and what types of undiscovered deposits could be present and what might be their grade, tonnage and depth attributes?) ?;

Samples of mine atmospheres collected by Federal coal-mine inspectors during their inspections and investigations of coal mines, in accordance with provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act (66 Stat. 692; 30 U. S. C., sees. 451-483) are analyzed routinely by chemical methods at Bureau of Mines laboratories. When samples collected in open workings of nongassy coal mines at points not less than 12 inches from the roof, face, or rib contain 0.25 percent or more methane, the act requires the operator, during operation of such mine, to comply with the provisions of sec. 209, Title II, of the act, which pertain to gassy mines. The methane con-tents of such samples are determined by a physical method based on infrared absorption spectrometry to provide an independent check on analytical results obtained by chemical methods. This information circular describes the equipment and procedures used by the Bureau for determining low concentrations of methane in coal mine atmospheres by infrared absorption spectrometry. The purpose of this program is to demonstrate the feasibility and practicality of noise control for secondary and tertiary crushers in surface non-coal mining plants and mills. It is a part of the broad Bureau of Mines program to reduce noise in mines to levels mandated in the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act. Utilizing the results of previous contractual research efforts in which noise levels of secondary crushers had been measured, two noise enclosures were designed and evaluated for the REXNORD Symons 7-ft diameter secondary and tertiary crushers installed at the Jackson County Iron Company, in Black River Falls, Wisconsin. The first enclosure had a circular shape following closely that of the crusher and was built up entirely of quick-release panels which can be handled by the crusher operator alone. The second enclosure was octogonal in shape and can be rapidly removed, partially or totally using an overhead crane. Both enclosures fully satisfy the noise reduction objectives and permit daily and long-term maintenance of the crushers. Cost analyses show the cost of the enclosure to be less than 10 per cent of the cost of the crusher, the cost of the octagonal enclosure being estimated at only 60 percent of that of the circular one, e. g. $15,000 against $25,000. It is concluded that the octagonal enclosure best meets the needs of the Jackson County Mining Company and it is recommended that an experimental enclosure be built at the earliest possible time, as proof-of-concept.

During February and March 1943, a sampling program was conducted on this property under the direction of the author. Instantaneous dust samples were measured by RAH's. for various locations In the longwall faces. Preliminary analysis of the data shows that in addition to the shearer's haulage speed, there are four major factors that influence the airborne dust distribution in longwall face areas: locations with respect to the position of the shearer's cutting, hardness of the materials, characteristics of water spray, and roof conditions. This paper presents the effects of those four parameters in detail.INTRODUCTIONA research project was initiated in September 1983 to measure and construct .a dust distribution map for the longwall face. During the first year, airborne dust samplings were performed in two longwall panels located in northern and southern West Virginia and working in the Pittsburgh and Eagle Seams, respectively. The physical parameters and equipment employed for both panels are 1 isled in Table 1. Figure 1 shows the detailed characteristics of the coal seams. Notice in both panels floor cutting was involved either to gain sufficient mining height or to reduce the adverse effects associated with a soft floor.The purpose of the research is to define the dust distribution at any instance in the longwall face area so that proper working positions can be determined and/or effective dust control techniques can be developed.This paper presents the partial results obtained during the first year."

The work of the operational communication systems' group dealt with a range of communication needs and functions within mines, primarily along haulageways, to and within sections up to the working face itself, and in mine shafts. A mixture of communication techniques and hardware is needed to satisfy this variety of communication needs within the differing environments encountered in U.S. mines. Substantial progress, both experimental and theoretical, has been made in recent years towards developing alternative communication systems suitable for use in mines which are based on "guided" waves, including wire-less (waveguide-like propagation in mine tunnels) and wire-based systems (leaky coaxial cables or wires) . Major priorities identified for further work needed to confirm (or deny) the applicability, and refine the operational specifications of promising communication systems for mine use include: Short-Term Projects o Cost/performance analyses of promising leaky coaxial cable and UHF radio communication systems which require further data from: - Experimental investigation under U.S. mine conditions of the performance of potentially applicable leaky coaxial cable communication systems developed in Europe (France, Belgium, and the U.K). - Cost estimates on these coaxial cable communication systems. - Measurements of UHF radio propagation in low-coal mines. - Investigation of the influence of obstacles (e.g. shuttle cars and section machinery) in the entries on UHF radio propagation in mines. o Investigation of the problems of transmitter and receiver coupling and termination matching associated with the two-way propagation of low frequency radio waves in hoist shafts.

"A New Mica Company in China A report has been received from the American Consulate at Chungking, China, to the affect that a new company has been organized to operate a mica mine north of Ta-chien-lu, in the province of Ssu-Chuan. The company, which is entirely under Chinese management and control, has a working capital of $10,000. While comparatively new, the mine has been worked before, and apparently with some success. The mica is said to be of good quality. It is claimed that the deposit will supply a limited amount of mica that will cut in pieces a foot square or over, and larger quantities of smaller sizes. The chief difficulty is transportation, for it is reported that a ten days' journey, part of it over mountain trails, will be necessary to transport the mica from the mine to Yachow, the nearest practical waterway. It is probable, therefore, that the output of the mine will be limited.Necessity for Careful Trimming and Grading of MicaA recent report to the Department of Trade and Commerce, Ottawa, Canada, by Acting Trade Commissioner C. G. Venus, London, England, contains information which is of vital interest to mica producers in the United States. It is pointed out that mica exports from Canada to England show a gradual decline dur¬ing recent years, the figures being as follows: 1913- 1,383 cwt: 1914 - 1,225 cwt: 1915 - 1,864 cwt: 1S16 - 879 cwt: 1917 444 cwt: 1918 - 480 cwt. Shipments from India to England, on the other hand, show a steady increase from 40,178 cwt. in 1913 to 66,401 cwt, in 1918."

For the proper control of gasoline treating plants there is need of a quick test for corrosion. In "sweetening" gasoline that is, in treating it to remove evil smelling mercaptans or to convert them to disulphides or sulphides the sodium plumbite ("doctor") method is generally used. This method involves agitation of the gasoline with "doctor solution's (sodium plumbite made by dissolving litharge in a solution of caustic soda) in the presence of free sulphur3. One of the common mistakes in the technique of this process is the addition of too much free sulphur, which will dissolve in the gasoline and cause it to be corrosive. In the operation of a continuous sweetening; or treating plant, a check on the corrosiveness of they product is imperative at all times. The copper-strip test commonly used in specifications take, so long to perform that the plant may fail to function properly for some time before the operator discovers it. The writer has investigated a rapid corrosion test method involving the use of metallic mercury, recently developed by Messrs. G. T. Granger, refinery superintendent, and A. B. Comstock, chief chemist, of the Barnsdall Refineries, Inc., Okmulgee, Okla. They have used this test successfully for several months in controlling the operation of their continuous treaters any have come to the conclusion that it has several advantages over the copper-strip test. Chief among these is the time caved, as the copper-strip test takes at least one-half hour, while the mercury test can be wade in about five minutes. It is very evident that this is an important item in controlling a continuous treater.

"The experimental flotation work described in this paper was undertaken to test the conclusions derived from a previous microscopic and chemical study of several samples of converter slag. That study3 resulted in the conclusion that approximately 90 per cent of the copper content of a converter slag wad in either the sulphide or metallic form, and that if the slag were cooled slowly the copper-bearing material would be in particles of such size that they would be freed from silicate and magnetite grains by grinding the slag to pass a 150-mesh sieve. If this were true, it should be possible to separate the copper-bearing grains from slowly cooled, converter slag by the flotation process.Many attempts, of which the author has seen no published account, have been made to treat slags, especially converter slags, by flotation. In every case these trials have been made with chilled slags, in which, as shown in the preceding report, the copper-bearing material is top finely disseminated, to be freed by any reasonable degree of grinding.The flotation tests described in this paper have shown that it is possible to recover by flotation about 30 per cent of the copper content of a converter slag containing 3 per cent copper and to obtain flotation concentrates which have a copper content of 35 per cent.Acknowledgment is made to G. The prospect is reached by a good gravel road through Havillah to Vincent's ranch, about 3 miles northeast of Havillah. From the ranch, an abandoned dirt road extends to the portal of the Moly alit, about 1 mile distant. The mine road could be kept open without difficulty if properly graded and surfaced."

"During the development of the sulphur dioxide leaching process for the treatment of ""mixed"" copper ores at the Southwest experiment station of the Bureau of Mines*** the pulp from treatment of roasted cupriferous pyrite with sulphur dioxide gases and water showed an unexpected amount of sulphuric acid. After following out several false premises it was found that this was due to iron in the solution, and also that this iron tended to oxidize to the ferric state if the concentration of sulphur dioxide in the roaster gases used did not rise above a certain figure. While the percentage of iron present was email it was enough to cause an entirely different set of conditions from those of the original sulphur dioxide leaching process and to promise a much wider application of the general idea. Sulphurous acid dissolves only certain copper minerals, sulphuric acid solutions certain additional minerals and ferric sulphate solutions certain further additional copper minerals, so this observation was of importance in connection with possibilities in the hydrometallurgy of the so-called ""mixed"" or partly oxidized copper ores.The work has been carried along by a number of experimenters. L. R. Eckman, junior chemist of the Southwest station, contributed largely to the early developments. L. Roberts, W. D. Bonner and C. G. Maier each in turn physical chemists at the Pacific Experiment station, (Berkeley, Calif.) have studied the reactions involved. A complete report of all the work on this process will be prepared later under the direction of O. C. Rolston. The purpose of the present paper is to place a summary of the more practical phases of this seemingly important piece of work before those interested."

"INTRODUCTION The United States, with its vast resources of relatively low-grade zinc been the world's leading producer of zinc -metal for many years. The expanded zinc production during the period, 1939-44, inclusive, was induced by favorable premium prices and has depleted the known ore reserves in the United States. The 1943-44 rate of zinc production cannot long be maintained in the United States, especially if premium prices are removed. Domestic zinc reserves, have been depleted to such an extent that it is doubtful if our mines will again be able to completely and continually fulfill the needs of this country.The Bureau of Mines, anticipating a postwar consumer demand for 550,000 to 750,000 tons of slab zinc and an additional 100,000 tons for use in paints and chemicals, sent two engineers to Sedanka Island in July 1945 to investi¬gate the deposits near Biorka Harbor.ACKNOWLEDGMENTIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "Any burning carbonaceous material, unless supplied with enough oxygen for complete combustion, will liberate carbon monoxide. Since tobacco in its many different forms consists largely of carbonaceous material, and duo to the conditions under which it is smoked (burned), carbon monoxide should be liberated. That this is true has been shown by Armstrong.***** who found that undiluted smoke from cigars contained in some tests more than 3.00 per cent carbon monoxide, the amount present depending upon the size and closeness of packing of the tobacco during manufacture and on the rate of burning.****** Cigarets gave much less CO, varying from 0.06 to 1.40 per cent. The rate of consumption and carbon content of the tobacco are not g.ven, so that a correlation of the values reported to conditions in closed spaces where people might be assembled are difficult, if not impossible.The Bureau of Mines is interested in the general question of carbon-monoxide hazards from tobacco smoke, mainly with regard to mine ventilation. In non-gaseous mines, especially metal mines, the question arises, whether, if groups of miners are permitted to smoke while working at unventilated faces or entries, would the accumulation of tobacco smoke in these places create an' additional hazards the to carbon-monoxide poisoning. The results should, in addition be of general interest in connection with ventilation of building and inclosed places where people may be assembled and smoking is permitted. The investigation described in this report was made with the above idea in view."

"INTRODUCTION A preliminary examination of the Green Monster and Benich copper prospects was made by engineers E. W. Newnan and George N. Bennett, of the Bureau of Mines, on December 13, 1943. In an unpublished report, it was stated that certain geologic features appeared to be similar to those associated with the copper deposits of the nearby Butte district. On these premises, a preliminary diamond-drilling program was recommended to explore 300 to 400 feet below the mineralized outcrops for the possible presence of a sulfide enrichment zone. In accordance with that recommendation, three holes were drilled. Background. There is currently little information regarding factors associated with specific modes of motion segment failure using a fatigue failure model. Methods. Thirty-six human lumbar motion segments were fatigue tested using spinal compressive and shear loads that simulated lifting a 9 kg weight in three torso flexion angles (0°, 22.5°, and 45°). Twenty-five segments failed via fatigue prior to the 10,000 cycle maximum. These specimens were visually inspected and dissected so that the mode(s) of failure could be determined. Failure modes included endplate fractures (classified into nine varieties), vertebral body fractures, and/or zygapophysial joint disruption. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine whether certain morphometric variables, amount of motion segment flexion, disk degeneration scores, and/or loading characteristics were associated with the occurrence of specific failure modes. Findings. Results indicated that stellate endplate fractures were associated with increased posterior shear forces (P < 0.05) and less degenerated discs (P < 0.01). Fractures running laterally across the endplate were associated with motion segments having larger volumes (P < 0.01). Endplate depression was more common in smaller specimens (P < 0.01), as well as those experiencing increased posterior shear force (P < 0.05). Zygapophysial joint damage was more likely to occur in a neutral posture (P < 0.01). Interpretation. These results suggest that prediction of failure modes (e.g., specific endplate fracture patterns) may be possible (at least for older specimens) given knowledge of the spinal loads along with certain characteristics of the lumbar spine. "INTRODUCTION Alunite occurs within a radius of 10 miles of Marysvale, Piute County, Utah, in veins and as replacements of igneous rocks. A number of each type of deposit was explored by the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Geological Survey, under the Strategic Minerals program during 1942. The exploratory work comprised geologic and topographic mapping, diamond drilling,,bulldozer and hand trenching, sinking test pits, rehabilitation of old workings, sampling alunite exposures, and constructing and repairing roads.ACKNOWLEDGNENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits; the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "Bureau of Mines engineers3/ examined the White Eagle fluorspar mine on September 3, 1943, and again on February 17, 1944. The examinations led to a proposal for the exploratory project upon which this report is based. The project, which was supervised by the author and P. L. Russell, was started on April 6, 1945, and completed on June 26, 1945.Geologists4/ of the Federal Geological Survey examined, mapped, and reported on this property prior to initiation of the Bureau of Mines project.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The property is reached from Deming, N. Mex. by taking the paved U. S. Highway No. 260 northwestward for 13 miles to the junction with State Route 61. State Route 61 is a graded but unpaved road and is followed northward for 8 miles to a junction with a poor dirt road, which is followed eastward for 11 miles to the mine. Silver City, N. Hex., is about 50 miles northwest of the mine and may be reached by several routes.The White Eagle patented claim was owned by L. H. Duriez of Vanadium, N. Mex., W. D. and W. A. Howard of Deming, N. Mex., Alvan N. White of Silver City, N. hex, and: Mrs. E. M. Saunders of Los Angeles, Calif. D. P. McCabe of Lordsburg, N. Mex., a former lessee, has recently contracted to purchase the property.The White Eagle claim was located about 1920 and was patented in November 1933. It was leased to Cooper Shapley of Deming, N. Mex., in July 1933; to General Chemical Co. from August 1938 to May 1940; to Antonio Cristo from October 1940 to the fall of 1942; and f is ally it passed into the hands of D. F. McCabe of Lordsburg, N. Mex., in May 1945.Approximately 25,000 tons of fluorite ere containing about 65 percent CaF2, have been mined and shipped from this property.5/ Most of this ore was mined by Cooper Shapley and the General Chemical Co. and shipped to the General Chemical Co.'s La Purisima mill at Deming. No exact data on production are available."
