Fuel requirements of the Pacific Northwest have been increased greatly by the war . To the normal peacetime demands for fuel have been added the requirements of new industrial and metallurgical plants engaged in war production , the increased demand arising from expansion of existing industrial establishments , increased amounts of railroad fuel required to handle wartime traffic , and increased quantities of domestic fuel required by the influx of war workers . In the face of these augmented demands for fuel shipments of fuel oil have been curtailed , wood fuel which normally is an important factor in both industrial and domestic markets of the area is less abundant , and the production of coal in Washington has decreased sharply . The fuel requirements of the region have been met so far by shipping large tonnages of coal into the Pacific Northwest from Utah , Wyoming , Montana , and Colorado ; the quantity received from these States and Canada in 1943 amounted to 2,688,9124/ tons , 175 percent of the Washington production . or The proximity of the Washington coal mines to large centers of war production has resulted in widespread migration of miners to employment in shipyards and aircraft plants ; the ensuing shortage of miners largely accounts for the decreased production of coal in the State . Hence , strip mining , which requires relatively few workers and a shorter time for development , offers an attractive means of alleviating the local coal shortage and obviating the necessity of shipping coal from the producing areas of the Rocky Mountain States to the Pacific.coast . So urgent has been the necessity for augmenting local coal production that any coal property that promises to be amenable to strip mining , even though the coal may be inferior in quality , has warranted examination . Even low- grade coals that cannot compete in the normal market can be used locally , thus releasing better coals for shipment to critical centers. of consumption ... One such deposit of low- rank fuel examined by the Bureau of Mines is in western Lewis County , about 9 miles east of Toledo , Wash . The coal is lignitic and on the as - received basis has a heating value of 6,000 to 6,500 B.t.u. per pound . The property is of interest primarily because the physical conditions favor operation by stripping and offer opportunities for low- cost production with very low manpower requirement .

Manipulation of hand-held objects in 3D space is a complex task. Understanding how individual digits interact with a hand-held object provides helpful information for hand tool designers, researchers, clinicians, and occupational therapists. At the object-digit interface, the contact mechanics can be represented by three force and three torque components. Six-component force/torque transducers can register all the three forces and three torques at the digit-object interface, and therefore are advantageous in the study of manipulation mechanics. The large number of force and torque signals from multiple force/torque transducers are difficult to interpret and therefore making experimental research of manipulation a challenging task. The purpose of this study was to develop a 3D visualization tool for the investigation of the contact mechanics at the object-digit interfaces during manipulation tasks. Methods A 3D stick-figure hand model was created based on digitized 23 anatomical landmarks of the hand. Five miniature 6-component force/torque transducers (4 × Nano17 for the fingers, 1 × Mini40 for the thumb, ATI Industrial Automation, NC) were used to record force and torque data at the tips of individual digits. Thirty channels of force/torque signals from the transducers were collected by a 16-bit analogue-digital converter (PCI-6031, National Instrument, Austin, TX) installed in a computer. The transducers were mounted on a custom-made rectangular aluminum handle for object manipulation. Coordinate frames were established at each transducer, on the handle, and at the base of the MicroScribe digitizer. To visualize the force vectors at the digit-tips, the coordinates of the hand landmarks in the MicroScribe coordinate frame and the force vectors in local transducer coordinate frames were transformed to a common coordinate frame defined on the handle. One healthy right-handed, male subject participated in the experimental study. During the tests, the participant sat in a chair by a testing table. The forearm was strapped to an arm holder in neutral rotation position. The instrumented handle was fixed on the testing table by a C-clamp through an adapting plate. With the hand of the subject gripped on the instrumental handle, the landmarks of the instrumented handle and the transducers, as well as the anatomical landmarks of the hand were digitized using the MicroScribe digitizer for the purpose of coordinate frame establishment and transformation as described above. The subject performed three different maximum isometric voluntary contraction tasks: (1) grasping, (2) rotating in pronation, and (3) lifting. Results The 3D hand model and representative force vector clusters in a single trial of grasping, rotating, and lifting tasks are shown in Figure 1. The results of a comprehensive investigation of conveyance arrestment devices (safety catches) in United States coal mines are presented. Availability and use, performance, inspection, maintenance, testing, procedures, and regulatory requirements were investigated. Information was obtained from equipment manufacturers, mine operators, and regulatory-agency personnel, as well as from studies of domestic and foreign mining safety regulations. Traditional mine hoists and commercial elevators for mine use were investigated. Results of this and an earlier study of wire-rope practice in United States coal mines show a continued need for conveyance arrestment devices. A wide variety of these devices are in use. Only two types have been proved reliable for stopping a conveyance without injuring passengers or equipment. These are elevator overspeed-actuated wedge-clamp (Type B) safeties and broken-rope-actuated devices for wooden guides using a single-tooth-dog design developed in Ontario as a braking element. Elevators are widely used in U. S. coal mines. When maintained according to American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Specifications A17. I and A17. 2, they appear to present no major arrestment problems. Of 42 coal-mine hoists used for man transport that were inspected, 30 are in vertical and 12 in inclined shafts. Twenty-four vertical shafts use wood guides; 6 use steel. The 12 inclined-shaft systems use flanged-wheel T-rail guidance. Two wood-guided vertical-shaft systems use the single-tooth Ontario-type dog; the other 22 use multi-toothed wedges, cams, or dogs that have been proved highly unreliable. The arrestment devices in the six steel-guided vertical-shaft systems and in six of the inclined-shaft systems cannot be evaluated because performance data are lacking. The remaining six inclined-shaft systems have no arrestment devices at all. Of the 36 hoists with arrestment devices, the devices of 16 are never tested, the devices of 10 are actuated periodically with the conveyance at rest, and the devices of the other 10 are actuated periodically with a slow-moving conveyance. Although high speed is as probable as low speed in an emergency and would provide the best test of arrestment capability, no tests are performed in the United States which demonstrate the ability of an arrestment device to stop a loaded conveyance from high speed. Mine operators indicate little confidence in their conveyance arrestment devices, and manufacturers recognize a need to improve their products. Neither state nor Federal regulations provide a guide to this improvement. Mine operators, manufacturers, and state and Federal regulatory agency personnel would welcome specific guidance. In view of this, a set of application, design, actuation, stopping-performance, and testing and inspection criteria is presented as a guide to eliminating the inadequacies of these devices. Recommendations are included for improving hoist controls and machinery directly affecting conveyance safety.

A recently completed survey , made by the Bureau of Mines to determine the trend of fuel consumption at refineries in the United States , showed the following outstanding points : A decrease in the use of oil for fuel in 1927 of over 5,000,000 barrels as compared with 1926 ; a decrease in the use of coal of over : 1,000,000 short tons ; small increases in the use of both natural gas and refinery gas ; an increase in the use of petroleum coke . The decrease in fuel - oil consumption was approximately 2,000,000 barrels each in the Atlantic Coast , Texas , and Louisiana- Arkansas districts , with an increase of 1,000,000 barrels in the Indiana - Illinois district , or a net decrease of 5,000,000 barrels . The decrease in fuel- oil consumption by refineries in the Texas and Louisiana- Arkansas areas was offset largely by increased consumption of natural gas and refinery gas , whereas the increased consumption in the Indiana- Illinois region was more than offset by the decrease in coal consumption . The use of coal for fuel declined from 6,052,000 short tons in 1926 to 5,031,000 short tons in 1927. Practically all of this decrease was recorded in the Appalachian and Indiana- Illinois districts , which at the same time showed the largest percentage increase in the use of oil for fuel . It is probable , therefore , that although coal prices also fell off , a considerable quantity of oil replaced coal in this area in 1927. In addition , the group of refineries , which are by location more or less definitely committed to the use of coal for fuel , undoubtedly succeeded in saving a material amount of coal through the use of more efficient fueling methods . A total of 130,815,000,000 cubic feet of natural gas was consumed for fuel at refineries in 1927. This represents an increase of 8 per cent over the 1926 total . Nearly all of this increase resulted from the opening of a line from the Monroe field to Baton Rouge , La . Had this line not been opened , there would have been a decrease in the use of natural gas , as a number of districts , particularly the Rocky Mountain , reported decreases in its use . The use of refinery or still gases for fuel did not change materially during 1927 , there being a total of 52,807,000,000 cubic feet burned as compared with 52,077,000,000 cubic feet in 1926. Refinery gases are largely a product of cracking and , it was probably more than a coincidence that a few districts in which cracking slowed down in 1927 also reported less refinery gas used as fuel .

Industrial equipment exposes individuals to whole-body vibration (WBV) and mechanical shock. This exposure can negatively impact their health, safety, comfort, and working efficiency and performance. Accordingly, proper seat design is an important consideration in reducing the adverse effects of WBV exposure to vehicle operators. Since the human body is sensitive to low frequency WBV, ride quality is a basic and important element of good seat design. When designing a suitable seat, it is essential to understand vibration exposure environment of workers and how well they can tolerate this environment [1]. This is particularly true in the mining industry. Mayton et al. [2] reported on a low-coal shuttle car seat design that underwent limited, yet successful underground mine trials. Building on this work, a follow-up study compared NIOSH and existing seat designs on low- and mid-coal seam shuttle cars. The NIOSH seat designs included viscoelastic foam, which has properties similar to those found in a mechanical spring/damper suspension system. The seats also included an adjustable lumbar support and a fore-aft seat adjustment. The NIOSH seat designs contrast with the existing seat design, which have little or no lumbar support and include inexpensive foam padding of the type commonly used in furniture. This paper will focus on the seat designs for the mid-coal seam shuttle car and compare subjective comfort data collected from five vehicle operators with ISO 2631 – based reduced comfort boundary (RCB) analysis of recorded vibration levels. Methods Experimental data were collected using three different tools: triaxial accelerometers, pre-amplifiers, and filters connected to a data recorder; a visual analog scale (VAS); and a short questionnaire. Researchers recorded quantitative or objective vehicle vibration data to determine the input and output acceleration at the operator cab floor and operator seat interface. Qualitative or subjective data, collected with the VAS, allowed researchers to obtain the operators’ immediate impressions of shock, vibration, and discomfort levels for the vehicle ride on each of the seat designs. Each shuttle car operator made six round trips with the vehicle each seat. The shuttle car operator marked the VAS on the first, third, and sixth round trip of the trials for each seat. A round trip consisted of traveling to the coal face with no load and returning to the load discharge location with a full load of coal. Results Total overall average ratings for the five vehicle operators of the mid-coal seam shuttle car, showed that operators sensed from 45 to 87% less discomfort with NIOSH seat designs compared to the existing seat design. Using a 95% CI, researchers computed a strong positive correlation for discomfort. Figure 1 illustrates the RCB analysis method for one of two NIOSH seat designs.

"The Avon mica district of Latah County, Idaho, is situated on a heavily forested spur of the Thatuna Range at an average altitude of 4,000 feet. The nearest rail connection is at Avon, a small farming settlement 7 miles to the south. The main supply point is Moscow, Idaho, which is 35 miles by graveled and graded county roads from Avon.Discovery of mica-bearing pegmatites in 1885 was followed in 1888 by exploitation of several outcrop deposits. Although factual data are unavailable, past production appears to have been well in excess of $100,000. Recent production (September 191 to April 1945) amounted to 65,824.78 pounds of trimmed sheet mica and 33,294.17 pounds of punch mica having a total gross value of $434,298.The several properties of the district are variously owned by estates, individuals, and the State. When active, all wore under lease or sublease to individual operators.The deposits are in an area of pre-Cambrian schists adjacent to a small granitic outlier of the Idaho batholith. The pegmatites are nearly concordant in dip and strike to the foliation of the enclosing schists. The more persistent bodies are usually tabular, lenticular, or pegmatite. Individual dikes range in length from 10 feet or less to 300 feet.The recoverable crude mica content of the pegmatites ranges downward from a maximum of 115 pounds per ton of pegmatite mined. Material discarded in rifting and trimming operations further reduces recovery to a maximum of 5 pounds per ton -of pegmatite mined. The average recoverable sheet content of the 'recently operated .deposit is estimated at 2 pounds per ton of pegmatite -mined. Available data indicate that about 21 percent of the district's recent production of trimmed sheet mica has been ""Group A"" material suitable for exacting condenser requirements. A few of the dikes contain local concentrations of beryl.Reserves of the three known major deposits of the district are estimated at about 600 to 1,000 tons of combined ""indicated"" and ""inferred"" crude block mica. One of these deposits is inferred to contain between 150 and 450 tons of beryl.It is believed that those mica reserves are minable only under a cost-market price ratio similar to that established during 1943 and 1944. A small part of the reserves can be ""high-graded"" under the present price structure. Profitable recovery of the beryl would require a market price four to five times that paid in 1944.Preliminary examination of the Avon mica district was made by the Bureau of Mines in the summer and fall of 1942. A study of the Muscovite mine and a brief reconnaissance of the surrounding district led the Bureau to recommend that the district be explored by angle-dozer trenching."

The study site in northeastern Illinois underwent surface mining for coal in 1943 and was reclaimed by the state of Illinois in 1972-1973. Additional soil amendments and seed were applied to the spoil surface in 1975-1980. Previous studies in 1975-1978 had shown that the surface spoil materials and five final-cut lakes at the site were quite acidic and the lakes contained high concentrations of sulfate and dissolved metals. Surface runoff water from monitoring plots in 1976 were only moderately acidic and the mean concentrations of most dissolved metals and sulfate in the runoff waters were less than 25% of the concentrations found in Lake B. By 1980, vegetation had become well established over most of the mined area. However, the five final-cut lakes (Lakes A-E) remained acidic. The purpose of the study reported here was to determine the physical and geochemical subsurface conditions of the spoil materials, the hydrologic flow system within the spoils, and the magnitude of acidic spoil leachate migration into the lakes and into the wetland prairie north of the mine site. Lakes A, B, C, and E were still very acidic in 1980-1981 (pH range: 2.9-3.4; aridity range: 110-860 mg/L as CaCO3). Lake B had the worst water quality, with mean concentrations of dissolved aluminum, iron, manganese, and sulfate of 75, 25, 37, and 3340 mg/L, respectively. Shallow groundwaters in spoil materials around Lake B had a lower pH and about two to four times greater concentrations of aridity, aluminum, manganese, zinc, and other metals and nearly 20 times greater dissolved iron than the water in Lake B. The shallow groundwaters in undisturbed soils and bedrock 10-30 m north of the mine site spoils generally were alkaline, but did contain occasional moderately high sulfate and metal concentrations. Pumping tests and recovery tests conducted in piezometers showed hydraulic conductivities of spoil materials ranging from less than 10- to 10-5 m/s; hydraulic conductivities of natural soils and bedrock were measured between 10-10 to 10-7 m/s. Water levels in spoil materials increased rapidly in response to rainstorm events and the recession curves were relatively quick to decline, lasting only two or three days. Quick infiltration of rainfall into the spoil surface and percolation down to the water table caused a rise in groundwater levels and movement of spoil groundwater into the lakes. This groundwater component in the lake water budgets could account for most of the water quality problems occurring in the acid lakes.

"INTRODUCTION ..Although the occurrence of iron ore in Missouri was recognized by Marquette as early as 1673, the first known mining and smelting operation was conducted in 1815. This operation was near Arcadia, Iron County, the first of its kind west of the Mississippi-Ohio River system. Several small furnaces of short life were erected in Missouri in the ensuing 30 years. However, until the extensive deposits of Iron Mountain and Pilot Knob were opened between 1843 and 1850, the state remained a minor producer of iron. It was this district which was chiefly responsible for the prominent position Missouri held in the iron industry until the late 1880's. At this time the easily minable high-grade ores became exhausted and the discovery of the immense Lake Superior deposits depressed the raw-ore price to such an extent that any mines ceased to operate. 3/Small yearly production of iron ores continued in Missouri to the present. Owing to war demands for hard ore suitable for open-hearth steel, the M. A. Hanna Co., through its subsidiary, the Ozark Ore Co., reopened the Iron Mountain, deposits and installed new equipment in an old concentrator to handle the low-grade ores left from previous operations. At present, ore production is from open pits, but underground mining is contemplated in the future. About 2,000 tons a day of iron ore is treated by gravity concentration of material from the open pits in the immediate vicinity. The concentrate is shipped to the Birmingham, Ala., district and to Granite City, Ill., for smelting. The coarse tailing is sold for ballast and concrete aggregate. The iron requirements of the concentrate stipulated by the purchaser are not difficult to meet, but the phosphorus is frequently higher than desired. For 1946 the concentrates averaged 54.18 percent iron and 0.235 percent phosphorus with low sulfur. The Ozark Ore Co. concentrate, however, sometimes contains as much as 0.40 percent phosphorus. The phosphorus in ores from those portions of the deposits wherein the phosphorus occurs with siliceous gangue is readily rejected in the milling, but in much of the ore the phosphorus is associated with the iron and concentrated with the iron minerals. Selective mining is impossible owing to the spotty occurrence of the phosphorus mineral. Often within 5 feet the ore will change from low phosphorus to high phosphorus, and it would be expedient to find a method of rejecting enough phosphorus at the mill from the latter type of ore to meet the phosphorus specification."

The mines and prospects in the vicinity of Landlocked Bay, 25 miles southwest of Valdez, Alaska (fig. 1), were examined, mapped, and sampled in July and August 1955 as part of a comprehensive investigation by the Bureau of Mines of ore deposits adjacent to Prince William Sound. The purpose of the investigation is to establish and record the location, nature, extent, and metallurgical characteristics of copper and associated metallization in the Prince William Sound district and to indicate, if possible, those areas in which additional exploration and development may be justified. Of particular interest are the possibly numerous deposits of massive iron sulfides that were neglected during early mining operations. These deposits may constitute important reserves of sulfur and iron. At Landlocked Bay deposits of copper-bearing iron sulfide minerals have been mined or partly explored through mine workings, which are in a zone about 1 mile wide along the western side of a large overthrust fault known as the Landlock Overthrust. Eight of the principal mines along this zone were examined end sampled. Although only three of the mines have a recorded production of shipping-grade copper ore, all have deposits of copper-bearing iron sulfide minerals that are similar in occurrence. The deposits occur as lenticular masses and disseminations of chalcopyrite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite which replace crushed rock or fill cavities along shear zones in greenstones and in sedimentary rocks that are exposed between sea level and an altitude of 2,500 feet. These lenticular masses of sulfide minerals range in size from small pods to ore bodies that have been stoped to maximum widths of 9 feet, strike lengths up to 70 feet, and dip lengths as much as 350 feet. Where accessible for sampling,, the copper content of the deposits ranged from a few hundredths of a percent to over S percent; zinc, gold, and silver are present in negligible amounts. Flotation tests of a sample composited to represent typical mine-run ore indicate that 81 percent of the copper is recoverable in a product assaying 28 percent copper at a concentration ratio of 17.5 : 1. INTRODUCTION Statistical records indicate that approximately 110,000 tons of metallic copper (about 16 percent of total Alaskan production) was produced from mines adjacent to Prince William Sound during the 40-year period ended in 1938. Although the principal production was from a large-scale mining and milling operation on Latouche Island (Kennecott Copper Corp., Beatson mine), a substantial amount of the total copper was derived from direct-shipping ores selectively mined or hand-sorted from numerous other deposits in the district. No production has been made since 1938; many of the claims have long been abandoned, and mine workings are either caved or deteriorating rapidly.

"A virtual impactor personal aerosol sampler (VIPAS) bas been developed for use in diesel-equipped mines to collect size-separated samples or diesel exhaust and mine dust particles in the respirable size range. This sampler consists or three stages: a 10-mm cyclone, a 0.8- µm cutpoint virtual impactor and two filter cassettes. The large non-respirable particles are removed in a 10-mm cyclone. The respirable particles from the cyclone pass through a 0.8- µm cutpoint virtual impactor with the particles larger than and smaller than 0.8 JI.ID (mine dust and diesel exhaust particles, respectively) collected on two 37-mm filter cassettes. The sampling How rate is 2 L/min so as to be compatible with the standard respirable dust sampler and personal sampling pumps. INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry has been increasing its use of diesel-powered equipment in underground mines, especially in coal mines. With this increased usage has come an increased concern regarding the health effects associated with inhaling diesel exhaust particles since they are in the respirable particulate size range. A Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) advisory committee directed MSHA to develop a sampling protocol for diesel exhaust particles to assess worker exposure (MSHA, 1988). In addition, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recommended that ""whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a potential occupational carcinogen as defined in the Cancer Policy of Occupational Safety and Health Administration"" (NIOSH, 1988).Past work, with cascade impactors in both the laboratory and in underground coal mine studies, has shown that the diesel exhaust particles are primarily in the less than 0.8 µm aerodynamic diameter size range whereas the coal dust particles are primarily greater than 0.8 µm (Marple et al., 1986; Cantrell, 1987; Rubow and Marple, 1988; Rubow et al., 1990a, b; Cantrell and Rubow, 1991). This work has been jointly performed by the University of Minnesota and Bureau of Mines researchers over the last 8 years. Typical particle size distributions for a diesel-equipped coal mine and an all electric coal mine are shown in Figure l. Note that the particles in the < 0.8-µ.m mode are the diesel exhaust particles (seen only in diesel-powered mines) and the particles in the > 0.8-µ.m mode are coal particles (seen in both the electric-powered and diesel-powered coal mines). Chemical mass balance analysis was also performed on these two size fractions to determine the degree of particle cross-contamination in the two modes. This analysis showed less than 10% cross-contamination, i.e., in coal mines Jess than 10% of the diesel exhaust particulate was collected in the coarse fraction and Jess than 10% of the mine dust was collected in the fine fraction (Cantrell, 1987; Rubow et al., 1990a)."

HAVIC is a collaboration of investigators from North America, Sweden, and Finland having a scientific mandate from NIOSH, to study the exposure response relationship between vibratory tool exposure and adverse health effects. Five cohorts, the Suomossalmi forest workers cohort, Volvo truck cab workers, Connecticut shipyard workers, and matriculating dental hygiene students and experienced dental hygienists have been under study. In the case of shipyard workers, there was survey and tool exposure data from 1988, although detailed subject testing was only available within the timeframe of the study. The truck cab assembly workforce was an inception cohort that had been followed from 1994 along with age-matched controls. The Finnish forest workers had cumulative health data on a cohort (n=52) that had been studied from 1976. For a subset of these subjects, there was detailed tactometry testing in 1990, 1995, and 2003. Accordingly, there was historical as well as new prospective data for the industrial cohorts. The Suomossalmi cohort was reassembled only for our study, which precluded follow-up evaluation and because of retirement is almost certainly the last time this historic group will be studied. The study features are: • Characterization of the exposure response relationship for hand-arm vibration through a study design, incorporating multiple cohorts, some having existing historical data, • Selection of cohorts to include different types of vibration: oscillatory (forest workers) impact (truck cab workers), high frequency (dental hygienists) and mixed (shipyard workers), • Inclusion of two inception cohorts: dental hygiene students and Swedish truck cab workers, • Methods for multi-site and historical integration A description follows. [ ] Methods The study included surveys, physical evaluation, and a selection of battery of “best tests” (cold challenge plethysmography, multi-frequency tactometry, segmental sensory nerve conduction velocity [SNCV]1,2,3) applied across groups to quantify responses to exposure. Exposure monitoring included exposure characterization through daylong data logging at the individual level. Workers at each site were instrumented with a microcomputer-based Vibration Exposure Monitoring (VEM) system, developed at the Biodynamics Laboratory of UCHC and about the size of a police walkie-talkie, to record user-specific tool-operating times, vibrations, and grip forces throughout all, or a representative part, of their workday. Of the many angles from which coal can be studied it is evident that some have a direct and others have only an indirect bearing on its physical or chemical nature . The more drastic the treatment employed in an investigation , the more inferential become the conclusions permissible from the experimental evidence obtained . Thus , ultimate and proximate analyses tell something concerning age , behavior on carbonization , and possible industrial usefulness , but nothing regarding structure or composition in the larger sense . Strong oxidation reveals the fact that benzenoid , pyrrol , and furane rings are prevalent in the chemical substances present , and milder oxidation indicates that the mass of coal , as in the case of the peats and lignites , is humic in character . But beyond such points of information , very little additional can be gained by the use of these more or less vigorous measures . To gain wider knowledge of the actual constituents of coal substance as found investigators have worked out systems of separation by means of solvents , of which a large number have been employed at various times both singly and in combination . The list of solvents includes petroleum ether , benzene , toluene , xylene , ethyl ether , alcohol , acetone , carbon bisulphide , pyridine , quinoline , aniline , phenol , tetralin , glycol ethyl ether glycol ethylether acetate , glycol methyl ether , glycol diethyl ether , pine oil , mesityl oxide furfural , benzaldehyde , ethylene oxide , rosin , caustic potash in solvents , amyl alcohol plus pyridine , chloroform , carbon tetrachloride , acetylene tetrachloride , naphthalene , and others . Once a coal has been extracted it has become common practice to subdivide the extract by means of partial solution in other and weaker solvents . Thus , we find the oily and solid bitumens of Fischer ( 1 ) , 3 Bone ( 2 ) and others ; the alpha , beta and gamma constituents of Wheeler ( 3 ) ; the classification of Novak and Hubacek ( 4 ) embracing oils , resins A , resins B , bitumens An , bitumens Bn , and bitumens Cn ; Crussard's ( 5 ) malthenes , asphaltenes , and carbenes , borrowed from asphalt terminology; and the 40 or more subdivisions of the phenol extract of coal worked out by Frazer and Hoffman ( 6 ) . Perhaps the primary object of interest in these many researches has been to find the coking principle of coal , and to study it and to learn why certain coals form hard , wellfused cokes , and others merely fall to pieces during carbonization . The origin of the various constituents of the gas and tar , the temperature at which each forms , and something of the mechanism of their synthesis have also been sought , as well as new bases for adjudging rank .

Homans [1950] offered a working definition of group that is useful for this research: "We mean by a group a number of persons who communicate with one another often over a span of time, and who are few enough so that each person is able to communicate with all the others, not at secondhand, through other people, but face-to-face." This chapter begins with a discussion of the group concept in reference to the hypothesized escape groups mentioned earlier. It then moves to an examination of analysis techniques used by the authors. Finally, the subjects themselves are profiled according to their demographic characteristics. The Nature of Groups Warriner [1956] took a realist approach to understanding groups: "(1) the group is just as real as the person, but (2) both are abstract, analytical units, not concrete entities, and (3) the group is understandable and explicable solely in terms of distinctly social processes and factors, not by reference to individual psychology." Warriner&apos;s realist position merely holds that "group" occupies a different domain in which it is no more or less concrete than "person." At this group level the unit of analysis will be those relations that indicate social rather than individual behavior. It is possible to investigate these group properties empirically-if a researcher avoids confusing conceptual entities with concrete ones. Most people seem to accept that group attributes must somehow be inferred, but think personal attributes will be directly manifested, requiring little or no interpretation [Snizek 1979]. In other words, nobody would equate physical components of an underground working section with the actual work group, yet social scientists (as well as laypeople) very often confuse real individuals with notions of the person. In actuality, neither groups nor persons are directly disclosed to the senses; both are inferred by experience and observation. One can "see" a group just as clearly as one can "see" a person, given the proper perspective from which to do so. It is necessary, in developing this perspective, to begin with a sound definition of the thing being examined. Besides communication, or more generally, social interaction, Homans [1950] included three other components of group makeup. "Sentiment" is characterized as the feelings people tend to form about one another when they interact often. These feelings include not only friendliness and dislike, but attitudes such as approval or disapproval. A "norm" is an idea, held in common by group members, that specifies how people ought to behave in given circumstances. In lay terms, norms are simply those informal rules individuals abide by in order to get along together in social situations. Finally, "activity" refers to those things persons do with others. In work groups, as an example, many of the activities are cooperative and goal-directed.

"A personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler has been designed and evaluated in both laboratory and field settings. The sampler uses size selective sampling for the determination of the respirable mass concentrations of mineral dust and diesel exhaust particulate matter found in underground coal mines. This design is based on the premise that diesel exhaust particulate matter is predominantly less than 0.8 um while mineral dust is greater than 0.8 gm. Operating at a flow rate of 2 L/min, the sampler consists of a 10 mm Dorr-Oliver respirable dust cyclone followed by an 0.8 gm cutpoint impactor and an afterfilter. Field evaluations consisted of sampling at 6 different locations in these underground coal mines. Measured aerosol concentration less than and greater than 0.8 um have been compared with a well characterized cascade impactor.Techniques must be developed for measuring the mass concentration of diesel exhaust particulate matter found in underground coal mines due to the health concerns associated with worker exposure to diesel exhaust particulate matter. Diesel exhaust particles are in the respirable size range and have been regarded as a potential occupational carcinogen by NIOSH (1988). Furthermore, a 1988 MSHA advisory committee directed MSHA to develop a sampling protocol for assessing worker exposure to diesel exhaust particles.The University of Minnesota and the Bureau of Mines, over the past 4 years have measured the size distribution of diesel exhaust particles and mineral dust, both in the laboratory and underground mines (Cantrell, 1987; Cantrell et al., 1987; Cantrell and Rubow. 1988; Marple et al, 1986; Rubow et al., 1988: and Watts et al., 1989). To date, measurements have been made in nine coal mines. Seven mines utilized diesel-powered equipment at the mine face while two used electric-powered equipment. The results of these field tests indicate that mineral dust and diesel exhaust particles can be differentiated on the basis of particle size. The measured particle size distributions have been found to be bimodal with a saddle point at 0.8 um. This has led to the hypothesis that one method for measuring worker exposure to diesel exhaust particles would be to collect size fractionated particle samples separated at 0.8 um with the diesel particles being less than 0.8 um and the mineral dust particles greater than 0.8 um.Aerosol size distribution measurements, using a micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI), have been conducted in the mine intake air portal, intake entry to the working section, haulageway, and section return entry. The MOUDI is a ten stage cascade impactor with particle cutpoints ranging from 0.1 to 15 um aerodynamic diameter (Marple and Rubow. 1984b; Marple et al., 1989). The sampling flow rate is 30 L/min."

1. INTRODUCTION In the early 1980s, the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Research Center required that a large reverberation acoustic facility be constructed. This facility was designed to determine the sound power level emissions of mining equipment, especially continuous miners and jumbo drills. A contract for a conceptual design of a reverberation chamber was awarded to Wyle Laboratories of Huntsville, AL, which had extensive experience in the design, construction, and accreditation of acoustical reverberation chambers. The following standards were referenced as guidelines for the design of the chamber: ANSI S1.31-1980, “Precision Methods for the Determination of Sound Power Levels of Broadband Noise Sources in Reverberation Rooms” and ANSI S1.32-1980: “Precision Methods for the Determination of Sound Power Levels of Discrete-Frequency and Narrowband Noise Sources in Reverberation Rooms.” Specific requested criteria included that the room be large enough to accommodate typically large mining equipment and that there be adequate acoustical modal density in the frequency range of interest. It was also required that the room dimensions would support broadband acoustical measurements down to the 100 Hz third octave band. With the closing of the Bureau of Mines in 1996, this reverberation chamber lay dormant for a number of years. However, this facility is now part of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH’s) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). One of NIOSH’s missions is to decrease noise induced hearing loss among the nation’s mineworkers. To this end, PRL researchers are refurbishing and instrumenting this reverberation chamber to facilitate assessment of the various engineering controls being developed to decrease the sound power level emissions of mining equipment. Early on, this work has sought to bring the chamber up to the level of ISO 3743-21 standard for engineering grade measurements for broad-band noise, with a longer range goal of improving the lab to meet the requirements of ISO 37412standard for broadband precision grade measurements. 2. DESIGN OF THE REVERBERATION CHAMBER The nominal room dimensions are 18.3 meters long by 10.3 meters wide with a height of 6.7 meters. The chamber volume is 1,286 cubic meters. These dimensions are important, as few reverberation facilities are large enough to test typically huge mining equipment. The floor is poured concrete with a sealer to make it acoustically reflective. The walls are built of hollow concrete block, 16 inches long x 8 inches high by 12inches thick. "INTRODUCTION The Rodessa oil field in Marion and Cass Counties, Tex., Miller County, Ark., and Caddo Parish, La., was discovered in August 1930, when a well drilled to a depth of 5,506 feet in Caddo Parish, close to the surface trace of the Rodessa fault, produced gas in commercial quantities. During the next 5 years 21 gas wells were drilled, and a large reserve of natural gas was developed in the high part of the Rodessa structure underlying the Massive Anhydrite member of the Glen Rose formation.In July 1935 oil was discovered on the flank of the structure when a well drilled to 6,048 feet also in Caddo Parish, was completed as an oil well. The discovery of oil in the Rodessa structure initiated art intensive development program of more than usual interest to geologists, engineers, and operators in the petroleum and natural-gas industry. The complex nature of the different reservoirs, the large volume of ""free"" gas under high pressures and temperatures in the upper part of the reservoirs, and the high gas:oil ratios of some of the wells during the early production of oil presented many problems the solution of which taxed the ingenuity of those responsible for the development and exploitation of the Rodessa field.Early waste of gas and resultant dissipation of reservoir energy led to State intervention, which brought about effective regulation of the quantity of gas blown to the air. Oil production from wells producing more than 2.000 cubic feet of gas per barrel of oil was restricted, and oil allowables generally were based equally upon acreage and upon reservoir pressures. Consequently, oil-production statistics of the field are closely associated with gas:oil ratios and reservoir pressures.The primary object of this report is to present factual and statistical data on well performance in the Rodessa field and to show established trends under certain operating methods and practices in high-pressure gaseous reservoirs, which have been carefully developed and outlined by modern technique and exploited under close engineering supervision.The large size of the Rodessa field, it’s fairly well defined gas caps, and a somewhat definite water table in a part- of the oil- and gas-producing region are of special interest and importance in a study of the fluid and energy relationships in reservoirs. Consequently, the results of much of the authors' work in collecting and compiling date are presented in the form of tables, maps and cross sections to show the relative thicknesses of the different oil-and gas-producing members and their permeability and porosity relationships, and, when possible, the variations in stratigraphy are exhibited in cross sections. Results of a detailed analysis of cores from a number of wells also are presented in tabular and graphic form."
