This circular presents the method of making tests and apparent results of comparing performance of tungsten carbide insert bits and steel detachable bits by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at the company's mines on the Marquette iron range of Michigan. The mines are at Ishpeming and Negaunee, Mich., and include the Cliffs Chaft, Mather "A", Cambria-Jackson, and Mather "B". There are four general characteristic types of high-grade iron ore on the Marquette range. B. H. Boyum2/ classifies the Cliffs Shaft as "hard-ore" and the Cambria-Jackson and Mather "A" as "soft-ore" types of deposit. Shaft sinking through Jasper, slate, and graywacke was in progress at this writing at the Mather "B", with completion at 3,100-foot depth in August 1949. The many different kinds of rock and ore at the mines of the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Co. and the experimental work being carried on with carbide in- sert bits make it possible to compare, generally, the carbide insert and steel detachable bit. The type of "hard ore" at the Cliffs Shaft mine re- quired close study of the possible use of the insert tit, and their records are more complete than those of the "soft-ore" mines. History and development of tungsten carbide tips inserted in rock drill bits have been covered by R. W. Adamson, C. H. Vivian, R. C. Sullivan,5/ and others. Tungsten carbide insert rock bits have only recently been introduced to the domestic mining industry. Although unusual performance records are being reported at operations employing the insert bits, the general adaptability of the tool to all rock types and the advantages to be gained by using carbide insert tits remains to be demonstrated. Insert-bit performance is being observed at numerous mines and quarries throughout the United States The several mining operations at the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at Ishpeming, Mich., is one site where exhaustive comparative tests of insert and conventional steel detachable bits are currently in progress. Results to date are sufficiently impressive to be of general interest to the mining

I have been asked to speak briefly about recent progress in the mining industry of the United States, and to touch on the general advancement of en- gineering science as applied to mining. By recent, I shall mean within the past 20 or 30 years. Such a period includes a great many of the changes which are of particular interest to the present generation of engineers, and the undergraduates of today will hardly turn back farther than the beginning of the present century in their study of develop- ment of methods and processes. Also, my own professional life spans this period, and I have seen or have been aware of most of these developments as they were taking place. In my review of developments, for the sake of simplicity and clarity, I shall deal separately with improvements in metal mining, coal mining, mechanical and electrical machinery for mines, metallurgy, petroleum engineering, and safety practices. Under each of these headings I have set down what appear to me to be the outstanding changes brought about during the past 2 or 3 decades. Other points will occur to other engineers; I do not represent that the following re- view is complete; it is only intended to be suggestive. In general, improvements in mining and metallurgical practices have come gradually, the charges being effected little by little, simultaneously in widely scattered places, and through the experience and inventive genius of many men. These changes have has small beginnings, and are generally the cumulative result of many steady and unsensational progressions, which still continue. What we today might be inclined to consider the culmination of a series of betterments in mining is, of course, but an instantaneous phase of developments which will continue in the future at even a more rapid pace than they have in the past. We are looking at but a flesh of a moving picture, with an endless reel to come after we finally leave the theatre. Behind all the changes in the mineral industry, the driving force has been the increasing demand of an expanding population for more metals and minerals with which to advance civilization. "It is well known by all who are familiar with the oil industry in America that the oil pipe line is as fundamentally a part of this industry as the railroad is of most other American industries. The oil pipe line was first introduced about 56 years ago, and since that time has so demonstrated its superiority as a means of carrying crude oil froze the well to the refinery, that this method of transportation has largely superseded all others. This has made possible the building of refineries in or near the large consuming centers, rather than at the wells, which are usually remote from the centers of population.The pipes for conveying the oil are laid on the surface of the ground, or at a depth varying from 18 inches to 3 feet beneath the surface, and the main lines are generally eight inches in diameter. The oil is forced through the pipes by means of pumps operated either by steam or by internal combustion engines. The pump stations are located from 1 1/2 to 90 miles apart, varying with the condition of the country through which the pipe lines extend, and the viscosity of the oil to be handled.Some of the larger pipe-line systems and hundreds of miles in length. It is estimated by the U. S. Geological Survey that the total mileage of oil trunk lines in the United States today is approximately 34,000, and that the gathering systems, which are a fundamental part of the trunk systems, aggregate about 11,500 miles in length, making a total of 45,500 miles.Using those figures as a basis, some general conclusions as to the investment represented will be made. At the time most of the lines were constructed, the average cost per mile based on eight-inch pipe was about $6,500. The cost of the average pump station at that time varied from $130,000 to $250,000. The cost at the present time, on account of the increase in price of labor and materials, would be much in excess of these figures. The fixed investment in pipe lines is, therefore, very extensive. It corresponds closely with the actual cost of the property, and is estimated to be approximately $500,000,000."

"In recent years operators of brown-ore mines have shown increasing interest in .the reclamation of ore heretofore lost in tailing ponds. In January and February.1945 the author made a preliminary survey of the ponds in the Russellville district, Franklin County, Ala. The Russellville district (fig. 1) was chosen for the preliminary work because it contains many large ponds in a comparatively restricted area. All important properties in the district were visited with Charles R. Wilson of Russellville, who has been familiar with the Franklin County brown-ore industry since 1890; with Edmund Craddock and W. S. Blackburn, managers of the two washers now operated near Russellville by Shook & Fletcher Supply Co., and with S. A. Britton, manager of the Sloss-Sheffield Steel & Iron Co. washer. The larger ponds were measured roughly and tonnages estimated. and samples taken from different areas were analyzed and beneficiated at the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines; Tuscaloosa, Ala.The ponds explored were the Sloss No.1 (Ensley); the Sloss No. 8, and the Sloss No. 4-5, which are among the largest in the district and so located, within an area of .three square miles (see fig. 2), that ore from all of them could be-treated,one centrally located washer.Actual work was begun on May 9. Between that date and June 30, when field work was completed, 246 holes in ponds were drilled and sampled, and 15 additional holes were put down primarily to test the drill .in different types of ground with a view to its possible utilization in other types of prospecting. Samples from all holes were analyzed for iron content; samples from 13 holes were sized and analyses made for each size fraction, and six large samples have been composited for beneficiation tests.Brown iron ore has been mined in the Russellville district since 1815, when the first blast furnace in Alabama was built in NW1/4 sec. 10, T. 7 S., R. 12 W., about 3 miles southwest of Russellville (19).-J The furnace was abandoned before the Civil War, and mining continued on a small scale until 1888, when Enoch Ensley began to mine the ridge between Russellville and Pain Creek. His first washer, Ensley No. 1, was about 300 feet south of the junction of the present Tharptown road with the Waco spur of the Southern Railway."

"With a view of elucidating the role of glutathione (GSH) in the biochemical pathways of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis, we carried out electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopic investigations of the chromate-GSH redox reactions. The ESR measurements, employing spin-traps, provide evidence for the involvement of the glutathione (GS•) radical, as well as an isolable Cr(V)-glutathione intermediate. These results indicater a new mechanism for the reduction of chromate by GSH in cellular environment and help understand the (unexpected increase in Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand breaks at elevated GSH levels.We report here indirect electron spin resonance (EGR evidence for the involvement of the glutathionyl (GS) radical and direct evidence for a Cr(V) intermediate in the reactions of glutathione ¬(GSH) with chromate for the first time.. This work was undertaken to clarify the biochemical pathway of the reduction of chromate by GSH, since this reduction process is thought to be a critical step in the pathogenesis of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis. This follows from the literature reports which show that (a) Cr(VI)compounds have been proven to be carcinogens in laboratory animals as well as in human studies2-4, (b) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds are mutagenic 5-7, (c) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds can penetrate cell membranes 8.9 (d) the final state of Cr(VI) in cellular reductions is Cr(III)', (e) by itself chromate (or Cr(VI)) cannot be directly mutagenic since Cr(VI) is known not to interact with isolated DNA under physiological conditions 10, suggesting the significance of Cr(VI).reduction processes. One of the major reductants in cellular environments is thought to be the GSH, both outside and inside the ce11s 11-13. Other evidence for the role of GSH in the chromate toxicity is seen from recent studies showing that exposure of hamster cells to non-toxic levels of added selenite increases the levels' of GSH as well as the Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand beaks 14, and thatsuch DNA strand breaks in hepatocytes also change in direct proportion to their GSH content 15,16. These observations wereinterpreted as implying that the reduction of chromate by GSH, to some reactive intermediate is an important step in the chromatecarcinogenicity 15,16. The Bunker Hill Mine, located in north Idaho, consists of over 150 miles of passageways within highly fractured and faulted Precambrian metamorphosed rocks. The Bunker Hill Mine was at one time a major producer of lead and zinc; currently it is on inactive but maintained status. Ground water moving along flow paths that have been disturbed by mining reacts with pyrite and oxygen to produce acid water within the mine. Discharge of this acid water averages more than 5 cubic feet per second, with an average zinc concentration of 160 mg/L and pH of 2.8. Treatment of this acid mine drainage is required by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). Cessation of all underground activities at the Bunker Hill Mine will not terminate the production of acid mine drainage. Reclamation alternatives that could either reduce the quantity or Improve the quality of the drainage upon mine closure are highly attractive. This project is directed towards delineation of reclamation alternatives based upon an understanding of the characteristics of ground water recharge near the mine. A variety of field techniques were used to identify areas of rapid infiltration and to investigate the ground water flow system associated with the upper portion of the mine in a portion of the Milo Creek drainage. These techniques include Installation of piezometer nests, dye tracing, surface resistivity, dye dilution, spring surveys, and hydrochemical analyses. Sites of direct Infiltration into the mine have been located. These include mine workings directly below perennial streams, intersections between streams and faults, and a caved area adjacent to an ephemeral stream. Results of these investigations indicate that recharge through these sites is not as rapid as suggested by previous studies. Inflow to the underground workings from the ground water flow system around the margin of the mine may account for more mine water than sites of direct infiltration. Recharge control at areas of direct infiltration could result in a net decrease in the quantity of acid drainage from the Bunker Hill Mine. Locations suggested for recharge control are West Milo Creek above the Guy Caving Area, the intersections of the Cate Fault with South Milo and Milo Creeks, and an area of Milo Creek below the Milo Creek Dam that overlies shallow mine workings.

"The present and possible future commercial production of potash from various sources in the United Status is discussed below under the following heads:1. Potash from the saline lakes.(a) Nebraska lakes.(b) California lakes.(c) Other lakes.2. Potash as by-product from the cement kilns.3. Potash as by-product from the iron blast furnace.4. Potash from silicate rocks.(a) Feldspathic material.(b) Leucite rocks of Wyoming..(c) Sericite slates of Georgia.(d) Glauconite (greensand) of New Jersey.5. Potash from Alunite.6. Potash from organic sources other than kelp.7. Potash from kelp.In this discussion very little more than passing reference, if any, will be given to those projects which up to date have been developed only slightly, if at all, beyond the small scale laboratory stage, or for the development of which there appears to be very little financial and technical backing at the present time. Nether or not many of these proposed projects have merit can be determined only by an actual operating demonstration.Generally speaking, the potash industry of the United States has been hardly more than marking time since the armistice. This is, largely due to the fact that the consumers of potash have been expecting that heavy shipments of foreign potash to the United States would be resumed soon at somewhere near the pre-war prices, and they have not seen owing domestic potash at present prices for many months. The result has been that domestic producers have been unable to sell their product at even cost and many producers of potash have been obliged to close down. Thu Nebraska lake plants were closed down in February. The California saline plants were operating at below capacity, and the only large alunite plant is closed down. Even the cement plants have little or no inducements to recover the potash being lost in their waste gases and the production is very small at present.This condition will doubtless continue until a definite policy is decided upon as to the future importation of potash salts from Germany and. France. If unrestricted importation is allowed at prices even 50% greater than in 1913, only a very few, if any, of the domestic projects will be in position to compete with the foreign potash immediately, and the present industry will probably greatly decline with little or no prospect for a future resumption of the industry."

"IntroductionIn part 1 of this paper, the results of the experimental work in a wind tunnel under controlled conditions were presented. To understand the spatial and temporal behaviour of airborne dust under mine conditions, experiments were performed in the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine of the US Bureau of Mines. The mine airway experiments were designed to study the variations of ambient concentrations along the length of an airway, and the deposition rates and deposition velocities in an airway cross section. Other objectives of the study were to investigate the spatial and temporal behaviour of airborne dust with regard to air velocity and particle density, the size distribution of the airborne dust cloud as it travels in the airway, and the size distribution of the dust particles deposited along the airway. Other objectives of the study were to compare wind tunnel results with In-Mine results, whenever appropriate.Experimental ProcedureLocationA complete description of the Lake Lynn Laboratory Mine of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) can be found in the US Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8911 (Mattes et al., 1983). This mine provides excellent facilities for dust experiments. The airway dimensions are similar to those of a coal mine airway. The mine has a drift (D Drift, see Figure 1) that extends almost 500 meters without interconnecting airways, stoppings, or bends. The D drift measures approximately 6m in width and 2,25m in height.The Lake Lynn Laboratory Mine· is ventilated by a variable speed, 75 kW (100 hp), 28,3 m3/s (60 000 cfm) blower fan installed on the top of the ventilation shaft. Air velocities of 1, 1,3 and 1,8 m/s, respectively, could be obtained in the D Drift. However, the temperature changes at the surface can cause small variations in air quantities and velocities underground. The low background dust level in the mine reduces the problem of sample contamination from other sources of dust. Extended periods of uninterrupted data collection can also be scheduled. Mine airway parameters which are important for the analysis include the dimensions of the airway and the ventilation data such as the air velocity, and the pressure loss in the drift. All these data were acquired during altimeter surveys which were conducted prior to each of the experiments."

The gas -flow oil-shale retort is a continuous, crass flow, gas -to -broken solid heat-exchange system in which heat is transferred by convection from the gas to the solide.2/ This type of heat transfer presents a problem of analysis that cannot be solved by methods in common use. Solution of this problem is necessary for design, operation analysis, and predict ion wherever that type of heat exchanger is used. This report embodies a method for calculation of heat transfer coefficient and temperature histories of gas and solid in the gas- flow retort operating at equilibrium conditions. Detailed calculations are presented to show the application of the method explained in this report to conditions of an actual run made in the gas-flow retort. Although used here for a specific case, the method is applicable to all heat exchangers that are characterized by continuous, crossflow, gas -to-broken solid heat transfer. INTRODUCTION In any direct, gas -to -broken solid heat -transfer system, it is difficult to measure the temperatures of the gas and solid inside the heat exchanger. The driving force for heat transfer between the two media in the bed there- fore usually is unknown. The major resistance to heat transfer is in the gas film surrounding the solid particles, and the thickness of this gas film is neither uniform nor can it be determined readily. It is well to point out also that determination of the surface area of the particles is of poor accuracy. Since the driving force, the major resistance, and the surface area in the heat-transfer system are such uncertain quantities, It is not feasible to calculate the heat transfer by usual methods. All of the fore- going statements are true of the gas-flow retort; as a result, efforts were made to determine apparent heat-transfer coefficients and temperature histories of gas and solid in the heat -exchange bed by calculation using those data that were available. The heat -transfer coefficient calculated has the following dimensions: B .t .u. per second, °F., cubic foot of bed volume, where heat - transfer coefficients normally have the units; B .t .u . per hour, square foot, °F. Only the Schumann-Furnas formulas may be used to determine the heat- transfer coefficient and temperature histories in this type of heat exchanger.

"A group of bisbenzylisoouinoline alkaloids has been shown to exhibit various degrees of effectiveness in preventing silica-induced fibrosis in animal models [1, 2]. The objective the present study was to characterize the binding of several of these alkaloids to phosphatidylcholine vesicles and rat alveolar macrophages using fluorometric and equilibrium dialysis methods, respectively. The lipid binding affinity of these alkaloids was found to depend upon several structural factors including hydrophobic substitutions, chiral configurations, and double oxygen bridge-restricted conformation of the benzylisoquinoline moieties. Tetrandrine, which is a highly effective agent in preventing fibrosis, showed strong binding to both lipid vesicles and alveolar macrophages. In contrast, certain analogues of tetrandrine such as curine and tubocurine, which have little or no effect on silicosis, exhibited only weak binding to lipid vesicles and almost no binding to cells. The moderate binding affinity of fangchinoline to vesicles and cells corresponded to a moderate effectiveness of the compound as an antifibrogenic agent. Methoxyadiantifoline, an alkaloid of unknown antifibrogenic potential, also exhibited high binding affinities for lipid and cells. In conclusion, the results of these studies indicate that alveolar macrophages exhibit large binding capacities for certain members of this class of bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids. A positive correlation was observed between binding affinity to alveolar macrophages and the reported antifibrotic potency of these compounds. These data also suggest that the ability of these drugs to interact with alveolar macrophages may be a key step in inhibition of the progression of silica-induced pulmonary disease.INTRODUCTIONInhalation of crystalline silica is associated with the development of silicosis. This fibrotic disease is characterized by the appearance of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions in the lungs with the progressive development of pulmonary dysfunction [3, 4]. Many theories concerning the etiology of silicosis involve silica-induced activation of alveolar macrophages. Evidence indicates that in vitro silica exposures result in the generation of chemiluminescence, and the release of superoxide and hydrogen peroxide from alveolar macrophages [5]. Activation of alveolar macrophages has also been demonstrated after intratracheal instillation or inhalation of silica [5, 6]. Such excess release of reactive products from pulmonary phagocytes has been associated with damage to the lung parenchyma [7, 8]. In addition, silica exposure results in the release of mediators from alveolar macrophages, which enhance proliferation of fibroblasts and collagen synthesis by these pneumocytes [9-12]."

Physiol. 252 (Cell Physiol. 21 ): C677-C683, 1987.-An electrooptical method was developed to quantify superoxide (02) release from single rat pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) during adherence to the bottom of a culture dish. This was done by measuring the reduction of nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate at 550 nm from videorecorded images of individual cells. Temporal changes in cell optical density, which are proportional to the mass of diformazan produced, were calculated from videophotometric measurements of the change in light intensity over individual cells. Total diformazan produced increased 78 and 1263 with an increase in NBT from 0.5 to 1.0 and 2.0 mg/ml, respectively. Total diformazan produced and maximum rate of production among individual PAM varied two- to threefold providing strong evidence for heterogeneity in 02 production. Specific inhibition of 02 production by superoxide dismutase, iodoacetate, and chlorpromazine significantly reduced the total diformazan produced and maximum rate of diformazan production. Hydrogen peroxide was not involved in NBT reduction, since catalase alone did not significantly change diformazan production. This novel method to quantify 02 release from single PAM should be valuable in analyzing heterogeneity and single cell kinetics of O; production, in assessing the effects of exposure of cells to particulates on O; release, and in relating release to electrophysiological measurements.rat; nitro blue tetrazolium; macrophage heterogeneity; single cell kinetic PULMONARY ALVEOLAR MACROPHAGES (PAM) protect the lungs by phagocytizing foreign debris and bacteria (24). This process involves ingestion as well as destruction of foreign matter. Phagocytosis is usually accompanied by a respiratory burst that increases cellular oxygen consumption and glucose metabolism in the hexose monophosphate shunt (7), which leads to the release of highly reactive oxygen metabolites at the surface of the · plasma membrane (6, 27). These agents have been implicated in the killing of bacteria by phagocytes (22), but have also been shown to be toxic and have been linked to cancer, emphysema, arthritis, diabetes, and other diseases (17, 22, 30). Toxic effects may be a result of either an abnormally low production of metabolites, resulting in damage to lung tissue by respirable bacteria and dusts, or an abnormally high production, resulting in direct damage to lung tissue by metabolites themselves."

The land-pebble district of Florida, wnich in 1928 supplied 96.7 per cent of the phosphate production of that State and 82 per cent of the domestic requirements of the United States, is centered in Polk and Hillsboro Counties about 30 miles east of Tampa The deposits are unconsolidated sediments occurring as beds of phosphate matrix overlain by a mantle of barren sands and clays. The matrix consists of a mixture of sand (quartz grains), clay, and phosphate rock in which the coarsest sand is much finer than the coarsest phosphate; that is, the sand is segregated in the fine material. Before the introduction of classifiers the concentration consisted of log washing, and screening at about 20-mesh, which was usually the finest size that could be taken to maintain commercial grade, 66 per cent B. P. L. (bone phosphate of lime) or more. When classifiers were introduced some of the fines that had escaped at the head of the washery and some of the minus 20-mesh material isolated during the washing and formerly lost supplied the feed. During October, 1927, the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy began to investigate the amenability of phosphatic sands to gravity methods of concentration. The work was under the immediate supervision of B. W. Gandrud, acting supervising engineer of the Southern Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Will H. Coghill, supervising engineer of the ore dressing section of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. More comprehensive testing followed and in the early part of 1930 some of the companies cooperated with the bureau and the above-mentioned institutions in conducting a series of tests on hydraulic classification and tabling. The results indicated that marketable concentrates could be obtained with a recovery of 25 to 45 per cent of the phosphate formerly lost. As a result two companies have introduced hydraulic classification to treat the current tailings, and one of them has substituted classifiers for the 20-mesh screens which had been unsatisfactory. Because the phosphate grains and quartz grains have nearly the same specific gravity, the use of concentrating tables by the customary methods is not applicable. The washeries included in the following report are designated as Nos. 1, 2, and 3.

Comprehensive world mineral industry investment data do not exist, but limited material published on aggregates of in vestment in some elements of the world mineral industry suggest a continued up-turn in the investment level, at least in market economy countries in 1989. Steel industry investments in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries are not yet available for 1989 but, as shown in table 6, increased by 22.1% in 1988, after showing a decrease of 5.2% (revised) in 1987. The pattern of investment ups and downs varied during 1988 within country blocs and economic alliances showing no particular trends. Investment in the steel industry by the United States increased by 58.3% between 1987 and 1988 and was 1 1.9% higher than the previous highest amount invested during the 1984-88 period but was still 41.5% less than the amount invested in 1983. Investment in the steel industries of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) dropped again in 1988 from the revised amount for 1987, which became the first drop after several years of steady growth in what became the expanded ECSC in 1986. This drop in 1988 was the result of lower investments by Denmark, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Nether- lands, and Spain, investments grew or remained level in Belgium, Portugal, and the United Kingdom in 1987 and 1988. A decrease in investment in the Canadian (-26.6%) steel industry was offset by in- creases registered by the members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) of 31.7%, by Japan of 19.8% by Turkey of 22.4%, and a slight increase by the nations of Latin America. If data for the world steel industry as a whole, including those of the centrally planned economy countries, were available, the same pattern presumably would be shown as that reported; that is, it would remain fairly stable, with increases in some countries being offset by decreases in others. Material used for flame safety lamp gauzes should possess the following qualities: (1) mechanical strength, (2) resistance to corrosion under service con- ditions, (3) a relatively high thermal conductivity, (4) a melting point above the ignition temperature of mine gas. Heretofore, three metals have been used for flame lamp gauzes, namely: steel, brass and copper. While each of these has the requisite qualities to some extent, none of them is an ideal gauze material. Copper gauzes lack mechanical strength, especiall, after they have been heated; brass and copper both have comparatively low melting points so that before the gas ignition is reached the gauze metal is attacked and oxidized under the action of the heat. Steel corrodes readily in damp atmos- pheres and if the lamp stands unused under these conditions for some time, the gauzes become unfit for service. Tests of these three materials have shown that steel offers the highest degree of safety. Manel metal, the natural alloy of nickel and copper, is practically noncor- rodible. Its relting point is approximately the same as that of steel. From time to time it has been suggested that this alloy might be a better gauze material than steel, since gauzes made of Monel metal should have all of the good qualities that steel gauzes possess and, in addition, would not corrode appreciably in ordinary mine atmospheres. One advocate of this use for Monel metal, the International Nickel Co., through their development engineer, Mr. Robert J. McKay, cooperated with the Interior Department, Bureau of ines, to the extent of supplying twelve sets of 30 mesh, Monel-metal gauzes for tests. Those gauzes were made up by the same lamp manufactur- er ho rade the steel gauzes used in the previous investigation. Being made by the same processes as the steel gauzes, these Manel-metal gauzes were needlessly given the same anti-rust coating that is always applied to steel gauzes to prevent any corrosion before the gauzes are used. In previous tests the Bureau of Mines had collected data as to the behavior of steel gauzes. In determining the value of Monel metal as a gauze material, it was planned to obtain similar data with Monel-metal gauzes, and thus make a direct comparison with the steel gauzes. Although there are discernible patterns in the velocity distribution, there are wide differences in distribution in the cases examined. This can be attributed to differences in mining and face geometry. An important factor is air leakage into the goaf.IntroductionOver the past two years several intensive air velocity surveys have been carried out in West Virginia coal mines as part of a programme aimed at understanding dust transport mechanisms on mechanized longwall faces. These are presented here and some of the patterns of velocity distribution are discussed.Ventilation survey methodologyThe air velocity vector consists of three mutually perpendicular subvectors; the vertical subvector is directed toward the roof, one of the horizontal subvectors is parallel to the coal face and the other pointing to the gob. The air velocity which was measured in this paper is the horizontal subvector parallel to the coal face.To record the velocity distributions at the longwall faces, the surveying stations and the surveying points were established as follows.(1) The first station usually was set at the third support from the headentry T-junction. Within the first few supports, the air coming from the intake airway encounters a sharp right-angle turn at the T-junction, and forms a turbulent region close to the coal face. The intake air in this region is also influenced by the motors that drive the face conveyer. But when the air reaches the different. But for the same face the number was the same. The main air-travelling area was divided into six to 12 equally sized sub-areas, and each surveying point was situated approximately at the centre of the sub-area.The velocity survey was carried out by two persons, one reading the meter and the other taking down the readings. A complete survey at one station took about 5-8 min. Usually, the dimension of the cross-sectional area was measured during that time.A third person used the smoke tubes to observe the following: (I) the air movement patterns at different locations; (2) the extent and the direction of the air leakage; and (3) the machines' influence on the main airflow. At the same time he observed and recorded the roof conditions and the compactness of the roof-caving in the gob."

"Necessary Qualities There mines are located in out of the way places, where timber is scarce and its price high, the problem of protecting it from fire risk is of considerable practical importance. Scarcity of timber for mining purposes is commonly met with in the more arid parts of the country, where, also, mine timbers are most likely to become dry, and inflammable, and where, therefore, the risk from fire is accentuated. Any effective and cheap method of securing adequate protection of such timber at the lowest possible cost is worthy of careful investigation. The use of magnesite cement has been suggested in this connection.The necessary qualities for any substance for the use suggested above may be summarized as follows: It should be resistant to abrasion, and to impact and structural stresses. It should be durable when subjected to the action of the ele¬ments, and stable to any minor derangements of the base on which it is placed. It must be relatively unaffected by changes in temperature, by the action of water, and should adhere to the material on which it is placed, and it should also be free from shrinkage cracks due to setting up the material, Magnesite cement appears to fulfill the various conditions outlined above.The elasticity of such cement is the outstanding quality which makes it desirable for exterior work. It also possesses the ability to adhere to all materials in a marked degree. Its freedom from expansion and contraction after setting is one of the principal reasons for its adhesive quality. It may be applied to old brick or stone walls, even tho they have been repeatedly covered with paint, and the quality of ad-hearing to wood makes it possible to secure a weather-proof protection to the wooden casings and trim of exterior openings. The quality of adhesion and elasticity is easily proved by applying a 1/2"" layer to a 1"" board which has been first covered with metal lath. Such a board, about 8 feet long, may be repeatedly deflected about 3"" in the center without breaking the bond to the board, or causing any cracks to appear in the magnesia cement. The ability to resist fire as well as the possession of insulating qualities are also desirable characteristics of magnesia cement stucco."

"The X-ray method of quantitative determination is advantageous because it permits determination of compounds rather -than ions or elements; for example, the direct determination of quartz in silicates,4/,5/,6/ The method also takes into account the finest particles of a sample, which may be lost in wet chemical methods because of solubility or in petrographic methods because of limitation of the microscope. The sample is usually reduced to a powder and is easily prepared,7/ only a few milligrams of material being necessary. The sample and its chemical composition are not destroyed and may be used for further analysis by X-ray diffraction or by other methods.This paper presents in detail some of the more essential problems that arise in the application of X-ray diffraction to quantitative chemical analysis, Photometric measurements are discussed in connection with line intensities and the choice of X-ray film. The internal standard method, successfully used in spectrographic analysis, is applied.Copper K-alpha X-rays from a demountable research-type X-ray tube were used with a camera of 20 centimeters radius with a cast-lead-slit collimating system. A combination of a tilted wedge and a lead-slit collimating system permitted irradiation of a large amount of sample with X-rays. This tended to minimize errors due to possible inhonogeneity of the sample, to decrease the time of exposure, and to keep the lines on the X-ray film to a minimum width. There was sufficient dispersion of the lines for satisfactory analysis of most samples. Power was furnished the tube by a. source of constant high potential consisting of a synchronous motor generator furnishing 500-cycle power to a 100-kv. transformer, rectifying valves, and a condenser filter circuit. The X-ray tube was operated as a gas-type tube at 35 kv, and 20 ma,, the exposure times varying from 1 to 2 hours. The constant output of X-rays from the tube, indicated bar an exposure meter built for the purpose, was satisfactory.The recording microphotometer8/has been described. It was found preferable to a nonrecording instrument for measuring blackening of lines above a background on X-ray films. This background, which usually occurs, is sometimes complicated by numerous peaks from lines of complex diffraction patterns. is microphotometer record of the pattern, therefore, facilitates the location of the background 'and the measurement of the heights of the peaks and thus contributes to the accuracy of a determination."

"INTRODUCTION During September, October, and November 1946 the Safety Division of the Bureau of Mines, off' the United States Department of the Interior, Pittsburgh, Pa., tested four new types of self-contained breathing apparatus and approved them in accordance with Schedule 13C. Approval was granted with the proviso that certain specifications outlined on the approval plate be made fully effective, and with the understanding that established safe practices in training in the care and use of self-contained breathing apparatus are of major importance.The excellent records made during the past 30 years in the safe use of self-contained breathing apparatus, some of which required the almost continuous wearing of apparatus during several hours daily for days, weeks, or months, may be attributed largely to the Bureau's system of rescue organizations, selection of physically fit rescue workers, effective training, and educational work done in rescue and recovery operations during fires or following disasters and in the care and use of self-contained breathing apparatus. Loss of life during wearing of breathing apparatus was due almost invariably to poorly assembled or otherwise defective apparatus, poor physical condition of the wearer, or insufficient training or some incorrect procedure.The newly developed breathing apparatus are of much simpler design than the conventional type used for the past several years; however, it is just as important to select rescue crews carefully and to train them properly in the care, use, and limitations of the new types of apparatus as for the older long-established types, if anything like safety is to be achieved in using them. The Bureau of Mines considers that 1/2-hour and 3/4-hour self-contained breathing apparatus should be used only as auxiliary equipment in mine rescue and recovery work, and their capabilities and limitations should be well understood by those who wear them."

In overview, 1988 appeared to be the best year for the world's mineral industry since 1980, although the all-important petroleum component suffered severely from low prices. With this notable exception, the traditional statistical measures of mineral industry performance, namely production, trade, and consumption, reflected growth in most elements of the world mineral industry from crude material extraction through the gamut of downstream processing. Moreover, the growth was reasonably well distributed geographically, with many countries sharing in the substantial upturn in activity. World crude mineral output value was estimated at over $1,272 billion in current dollars ($1,090 billion in constant 1983 dollars). The value added by the processing component of the mineral industry raised the total value of the industry's output to an estimated $3,057 billion in current dollars ($2,620 billion in constant 1983 dollars). Less easily assessed was the value of mineral commodities moving in 1988's international world trade, particularly because of the declines in world crude oil and refinery product prices. It remained to be seen if increased volume and value in nonfuel mineral and coal exports, coupled with an increase in the volume of oil exports, would be adequate to offset the drop in oil prices. Whether or not the value of world mineral commodity trade topped the 1987 level of over $498 billion, an increase in the volume of mineral commodity trade was almost assured. Similarly, although comprehensive statistics were not avail-able on consumption of all mineral commodities in all countries, available data on selected major commodities in selected major countries suggested that not only had output of most mineral commodities advanced, but so too had consumption levels for most commodities.
