"In-mine airborne particulate samples have been successfully collected and the relative amounts of diesel and coal determined using the Laser Raman Quantitative Analysis (LRQA) method. This method allows analysis of filters which have been collected by a method similar to that used to determine the airborne respirable dust concentration in us underground coal mines. Samples were taken near the feeder-breaker, on haulage vehicles, and in the returns. Sampling methodologies were developed for coal-only and diesel-only particulate reference samples with sufficient filter loading for the LRQA method. A statistical analysis of reproducibility has been carried out. Samples have been collected simultaneously at two locations using the LRQA and the size-selective sampling methods. Good agreement between the two methods has been found.INTRODUCTIONThe goal of this research has been to develop the Laser Raman Quantitative Analysis (LRQA) method to measure the composition of respirable particulate, i.e. the fractions of coal and of diesel particulate, in the mine ambient air. In earlier Bureau of Mines sponsored research, we successfully demonstrated that the LRQA method could be used to measure the fraction of Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) in coal/diesel particulate mixtures which were prepared in the laboratory.(I) 'The immediate objective was to test and refine this LRQA method on samples collected in a diesel underground coal mine.Specific objectives required to meet this goal include:I) Develop in-mine sample collection methods which will insure sufficient particulate loading on filters for LRQA. ,2) Develop methodology for in-mine collection of reference samples (""coal-only"" and ""diesel-only"" filters) which arc required for quantitative LRQA. 3) Analyze precision and accuracy of the LRQA method. 4) Compare composition measurements with another analytical method, i.e. the University of Minnesota/Bureau of Mines size selective sampling Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor (MOUDI) method.An advantage of the LRQA method is that it allows analysis of filters which have been collected by a method similar to that used to determine the respirable dust concentration in US underground coal mines. No new sampling instruments and techniques are required. Transfer of sample from collection substrate to analysis substrate is not necessary. Furthermore, other analyses can be made on the same sample since the technique is nondestructive."

"The demand for open-hearth iron ore and the existence of suitable smelting facilities in the St. Louis area seemed to warrant investigation of several Missouri iron-ore deposits of the filled-sink type. Preliminary examinations were made in the autumn of 1944 by an engineer3/ of the Bureau of Nines, and in December of the same year funds were allotted for the exploration of these properties by churn drilling. Three properties, the Silver Hollow Bank and the Newbauer and Coleman properties, were drilled. Work was completed May 8, 1945.The Federal Geological Survey and the Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources assisted in the project by determining the stratigraphy from drill cuttings and by mapping the drilled areas.The properties explored are in the hilly section of east-central Missouri and are connected by all-weather graveled roads with various shipping points of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway system within 3 to 6 miles of each property.The Silver Hollow Bank, in sec., 8, T, 40 N., R. l W. Franklin County, Missouri, is in the Meramec State Game Reserve. The nearest town and shipping point is Sullivan, Mo„ which is 6 miles distant. The Newbauer property, in sec. 28, T. 41 N., R, 2 W., Franklin County, Missouri, is approximately 3 miles west of Stanton; The Coleman property, in sec. 14, T. 38 N., R. 3 W., Crawford. County, Missouri, is within a short hauling distance of the railway at Elayer, Mb. These are shown on figure 1.The region surrounding the explored areas contains a series of low-lying hills or ridges and narrow winding valleys drained by the Meramec River system. These hills seldom rise more than 200 feet above the valley floors, most of which are approximately 700 feet above sea level. Except for numerous small farms and a few small towns, the entire region is covered by a dense growth of timber and small brush. The St. Louis-San Francisco Railway system, U. S. Highway 66, and numerous all-weather State and county roads traverse the area."

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) and cytotoxicity measurements were made on newly fractured silica to examine specifically the role of the fractured-induced, siliconbased radicals (Si· and SiO·), and silica-generated hydroxyl (·OH) radicals in the mechanism of the cell membrane damage by silica. The concentration of the Si· and SiO· radicals was controlled through decay processes, thermal annealing, and boiling, while that of the ·OH radicals was varied by using catalase, superoxide dismutase, KMnO4, Ha2seO3, ascorbic acid, and metal ions, and monitored via ESR spectroscopy. The dust's cytotozicity potential was evaluated by measuring the silica-induced hemolysis and also by determining lipid peroxidation (using linoleic acid). Prom the comparison of hemolysis and ESR results it is deduced that the radicals play little· or no role in the silica-induced hemolysis. However, the lipid peroxidation data indicate that the radicals might be involved in the initiation of an oxidative chain reaction leading to the macrophage membrane damage through lipid peroxidation. INTRODUCTIONThe biochemical mechanism of Quartz-related pneumoconiosis is still not fully understood. It is believed, nevertheless, that one event of primary importance is the perturbation of cell membranes by the dust particles (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Parazzi, et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Shi et al., 1989; Summerton et al., 1977). The ensuing cell-membrane damage unleashes certain lytic enzymes resulting in additional cell injury and eventual fibrosis (Nolan et al., 1981; Summerton et al., 1977). Thus considerable effort is currently being made towards the understanding of the processes by which quartz particles disrupt the membrane of a red blood cell (RBC) or a pulmonary alveolar macrophage (PAM). A simple but important method of evaluating the membrane damage potential of a dust is the hemolysis test (Harington et al., 1971). Even though this test is used routinely for screening dusts for their cytotoxicity potential, the biochemical mechanism underlying the cell lysis by many dusts, including quartz, is still controversial (Kilroe-Smith, 1974; Singh and Rahman, 1987), and this provided us the impetus for the present undertaking."

Recent developments in mechanizing longwall it mining in Europe have aroused considerable interest among American coal-mine operators because this method provides an opportunity to improve safety, production, efficiency, and recovery. The success of longwall mining in Europe has depended to a large degree on development of effective roof-control systems. One of the major contributing factors in designing these systems is development off improved supports, which combine high load-bearing capacities with controlled yield characteristics, to use in the face areas. Other factors that relate to successful longwall mining involve knowledge of the structural properties of the strata above end below the coal bed being mined, movements of these strata induced by mining, and effects of the strata movements on the strata itself, as well as on the support system used. Extensive studies of the above factors relating to long-wall mining have been made in coal-mining countries abroad, and corresponding studies (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)3/ of room-and-pillar operations have been made in this country. Although descriptions and results of experiments of mechanized longwall operations in the United States have been published (6, 7, 8), this is the first instrumented study of roof behavior on a longwall operation. In view of the possible widespread application of this method of mining to American coal mines, where underground mining conditions are different from those found in European mines, an investigation was conducted at a mechanized longwall operation inn the Lancashire No. 15 mine, Barnes & Tucker Co., Cambric County, Bakerton, Pa., to study the factors that affect roof control. This report describes this investigation and discusses the results. This Technical Memorandum Report is a collection of three working memoranda, prepared during the course of our work for the Bureau of Mines and bound together for convenient reference. These working memoranda present preliminary performance estimates, for baseband voice and narrow- band through-the-earth electromagnetic communications systems of principal interest to the Bureau, for operational/emergency mine communications. The calculations were prepared to obtain early indications of the feasibility and governing parameters of such communications systems. They are based on limited, but pertinent, coal mine electromagnetic noise data acquired to-date by Bureau of Mines contractors; and of theoretical signal-attenuation characteristics for two transmitter antenna types of present interest to the Bureau. The memoranda examine the cases of baseband voice and narrowband communications for uplink and downlink transmissions, for frequencies up to 3kHz. Downlink transmissions are via a horizontal wire antenna, up- link transmissions via a vertical-axis loop antenna, for typical mine depths of 300, 600, and 1000 feet. Representative coal-mine overburden conductivities of 10-2 mhos/meter (moderate and common) and 10-1 mhos/meter (high) were used; for voice and narrowband, 10-1 for narrowband only. Examples of high, moderate, and low; surface and subsurface; harmonic and broadband-impulsive noise conditions were taken from NBS and Westinghouse (WGL) mine noise data, together with examples of high- and low levels of ELF atmospheric noise taken from M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory data. These feasibility calculations are not intended to serve as definitive and complete treatments, but as a starting point: to establish first-order estimates of the magnitude and variability of transmitter power requirements under different noise, overburden conductivity, and mine depth conditions; to identify relationships, conditions, or frequencies that are likely to limit or enhance system performance; to reveal items requiring further investigation and data still required; and to suggest practical methods for optimizing system performance. These objectives were met by the calculations. Simple experiments to support these calculations can and should be carried out; together with more detailed investigations of specific modulation, coding, noise-suppression, voice-compression and signal-conditioning techniques, aimed at producing through-the-earth operational/emergency mine-communication systems that are not only effective, but practical and economically sound.

For several years, or from about 1932 to 1935, inclusive, the coal industry of the United States had an excellent record as to coal-mine explosions. In 1937 and in 1938 to date there has been a definite increase in the number of explosions attended by considerable loss of life and property damage. In most of these explosions one important underlying and contributing cause has been lack of sufficient (or at least efficient) ventilation to properly dilute and remove explosive gas from the mine. This increase in explosions indicates that. the lesson taught through bitter experience, many times in the not far-distant past, of the need for good ventilation is frequently being overlooked, partly because the relatively good experience of the industry in the past several years has made many mining people forgetful. Moreover mining practices are rapidly changing, and in some instances the changes are being made with little if any regard for safety. It appears, therefore, that a review of some ventilation principles and practices should be of value in preventing further disasters; this paper has been prepared with that object in mind. In coal mining the need for thorough ventilation of all underground working places is recognized by both mining practice and law; such ventilation is generally obtained by the use of fans that circulate a quantity of air much in excess of the quantity of coal produced, by weight as well as by volume. For example, in a relatively small mine producing 1,000 tons of coal per day and circulating 100,000 cubic feet of air, which is by no means abnormal, 2,000,000 pounds of coal and approximately 10,900,000 pounds of air would be moved out of the mine every 24 hours. Because of the need for adequate dilution and removal of methane issuing or likely to issue from mine strata and for removal of the carbon dioxide formed by coal and timber oxidation up-to-date coal mines usually provide an air volume which if adequately coursed not only removes these gases but also the gaseous products of the detonation of explosives (which may include carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen) and the carbon

India is one of the fortunate countries that has substantial reserves of many raw materials for producing steel; however, for historical and economic reasons these resources have not been aggressively developed until recently. Production of steel on an industrial scale started in 1912, but annual output was below 1 million tons3 in 1938 and about 1,500,000 tons in 1951. Expansion of the steel industry became one of the objectives of India's economic planning after independence in 1947. The Planning Com¬mission's 1951 report emphasized the importance of steel production, but financial obstacles, emphasis on river valley projects, and priority for increased food production in the First 5-Year Plan (1951-56) did not permit large-scale expansion of steel capacity. The 1956 planned target for crude steel, only 1,650,000 tons, was actually exceeded by production of 1,737,900 tons. In the Second 5-Year Plan (1956-61), however, construction of steel plants received a high priority. Currently three new steel plants, each with an annual capacity of approximately 1 million tons of steel, are nearing completion in Rourkela, Dorgapur, and Bhilai. Simultaneously, the two privately owned steel plants and the small State-owned plant in Mysore have been enlarged and modernized. As a result, India's crude steel capacity will be about 6 million tons in 1961, almost evenly divided between Government-owned and privately owned plants. Actual production in 1960 totaled 3,254,000 tons compared with 2,434,000 tons in 1959. Assuming that the population will be 430 million and that capacity production will be achieved, the 1961 per capita steel output will be only 31 pounds compared with 200 pounds for Japan in 1959. Some Indian experts feel that development of steel-consuming industries merits greater emphasis in the Third 5-Year Plan (1961-66) than expanding existing steel-producing facilities. Nonetheless, the Third 5-Year Plan calls for a 10 million ton annual capacity by 1966 to be achieved by expanding the Government-owned plants in Bhilai, Durgapur, and Mysore, and by establishing a new integrated Government plant in Bokaro, in the State of Bihar.

INTRODUCTION It's a pleasure to be with you and to share in this opening session for the 27th Annual Institute on Mining Health, Safety, and Research. As we come together today, I would like to reflect for just a moment on the past Institutes. Much of the progress in Mine Health and Safety has been the subject of presentations and discussions at the previous Institutes, either by identifying the issues, proposing techniques to overcome the problems, or presenting new findings to address important issues for the mining industry. May I extend our thanks and congratulations to VPI and to the planners and organizers of all of these Institutes for their important contributions to our mutual goals of improving mine health and safety. In the time available today, I would like to accomplish two objectives: 1. Provide my assessment of the current status of the Mining Health and Safety Research Program; and 2. Share with you the continuing need and direction for the Mining Health and Safety Research. MINE HEALTH AND SAFETY RESEARCH TODAY Mine Health and Safety Research was conducted formerly at four geographical locations within the USBM, specifically: Pittsburgh, Spokane, Twin Cities, and Denver. Although the Twin Cities and Denver Centers were closed, we have been successful in relocatingfmaintaining much of the core competencies to conduct a responsive, multidisciplinary Mine Health and Safety Research Program. The current staff at Pittsburgh and Spokane directed toward Health and Safety Research totals 397. This includes Lake Lynn Laboratory, about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, where large-scale mine fire and explosion research is conducted. With the closures and transition we have worked to maintain the core competencies necessary to address Health and Safety issues. In some cases we have made arrangements to provide the requisite core competencies through external organizations. An example is the reassignment of the diesel particulate instrumentation capability from Twin Cities to Pittsburgh. In the case of diesel emission control, due to the cost of relocating laboratories and the lack of the appropriate skills at Pittsburgh or Spokane, the emission control laboratory is now being operated in Minneapolis through a contractual arrangement with the University of Minnesota.

"IntroductionA particle dispersion system has been developed to aerosolize bulk powders or material deposited on surfaces such as filters. The size distribution of the aerosolized particles can then be obtained by sampling the particles with an aerosol sizing instrument such as a TSI aerodynamic particle sizer (APS) or a cascade impactor.Of particular interest is the applicability of using this technique to obtain the size distribution of particles collected on filters. This system has been used to determine the size distribution of coal dust particle collected on membrane filters. The use of this device in this application is quite intriguing in that, if this technique can be shown to accurately determine the size distribution of airborne particles, one can easily collect particle samples using either personal or area particle samplers, determine the mass concentration of the collected material through gravimetric techniques and then use the particle dispersion system coupled with the APS to determine the particle size distribution. With this technique one can determine the particle size of dust in environments, such as underground mines, where it would be inconvenient or impossible to use a particle sizing instrument.Particle Dispersion SystemA prototype particle dispersion system has been developed for aerosolizing particles. A schematic diagram of the system is shown in Figure 1. The system consists of mechanism for advancing the particle sample beneath a dust pickup tube, a venturi for deagglomerating the particles, and a instrument for analyzing the aerosolized particulate matter.The procedure to analyze a particle sample is as follows. The particles to be aerosolized are placed on a sample plate from where the particles are picked up by an air stream flowing upward in a small capillary tube (dust pickup tube). This tube operates as a small vacuum cleaner passing over the sample plate. The air is drawn up the capillary tube at a rate of 2 L/m by a venturi aspirator. This is accomplished by placing the outlet of the capillary tube near the throat of the venturi. The accelerated velocity of the air creates a low pressure in this region which draws flow up the capillary tube. From the outlet of the capillary tube particles are transported to the inlet of the APS where a small fraction are sampled and the aerodynamic diameter of the particles determined. The particles which are not measured by the APS are passed into a HEPA filter."

The monetary metals , gold and silver , have recently been the object of such general interest that the United States Bureau of Mines has received many inquiries regarding them . Though requests for technologic information have been numerous , they have been exceeded in number by those concerned with economic aspects of these metals . The nature of the latter communications indicates that the public is not generally aware that various Bureau publications are available which deal with the economic situation of gold and silver . For this reason , it is deemed advisable to present a brief résumé of the papers which are obtainable from the Bureau or the Superintendent of Documents , together with the text of three articles recently prepared by the Director , reprints of which are not otherwise available . The Bureau of Mines compiles figures showing mine production of gold and silver , by districts and States , and cooperates with the Bureau of the Mint in determining the total annual output in the United States as a whole . 3 It recently established an annual canvass to determine the consumption of silver in the arts and industries of the United States , and published an economic paper covering such use in 1928 and 1929 , followed by an information circular on silver consumption by industry during the 2 years subsequent . A 4-year record is thus provided for those interested in utilization of silver . The Bureau has also published summarizations of all available data upon world production since 1493 of gold and of silver . It has , furthermore , rendered available a compilation of production- data of silver mines of the world , and an analysis of it , showing the proportions of silver and other metals contained in all the ores from which silver is derived . " All of these papers are concerned solely with putting into readily usable form statistical data and other factual material ; they do not offer theories or express opinions upon controversial questions related to these metals . Three other recent papers concerned with gold and silver are presented below in order to put them in shape for distribution by the United States Bureau of Mines . The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted joint research to evaluate explosion blast effects on typical U.S. mine ventilation stoppings in the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory?s (PRL) Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM). An innovative Australian-designed brattice stop-ping was also evaluated. After mine explosion accidents, MSHA conducts investigations to determine the cause(s) as a means to prevent future occurrences. As part of these postexplosion investigations, the condition of underground stoppings, including the debris from damaged stoppings, is documented as evidence of the approximate strength and the direction of the explosion forces. The LLEM data showed that a typical dry-stacked and coated solid-concrete-block stopping survived a total explosion pressure of ~6.7 psi (~46 kPa) and was destroyed at a total explosion pressure of ~7.6 psi (~52 kPa). In comparison, a typical dry-stacked and coated hollow-core concrete block stopping survived a total explosion pressure of ~3.4?4.3 psi (~23?30 kPa) and was destroyed at a total explosion pressure of ~3.6?5.2 psi (~25?36 kPa), depending on the length of the pressure pulse and the value of the pressure-time integral. A typical steel panel stopping design survived a total explosion pressure of 0.8 psi (5.5 kPa) and failed at a total explosion pressure of 1.3 psi (9 kPa). The LLEM data also showed that an obstacle blocking the path of a pressure wave resulted in a higher reflected pressure at the obstacle. An 8-in (20-cm) thick wet-laid solid-concrete-block stopping coated on one side survived a total explosion pressure of ~26 psi (~180 kPa); this stopping was not tested to failure. A 6-in (15-cm) thick wet-laid solid-concrete-block stopping coated on one side survived a total explosion pressure of ~14 psi (~97 kPa) and was destroyed at a total explosion pressure of ~25 psi (~172 kPa). An innovative Australian woven cloth stopping survived an explosion pressure of 4.0 psi (27 kPa) and was destroyed at an explosion pressure of ~6.1 psi (~42 kPa). These results will help investigators determine the approximate explosion forces that destroy or damage stoppings during actual coal mine explosions.

Objective Develop a method to warn of hazardous conditions and enhance safety during operation and inspection of vertical mine shafts and hoists. Background Mine hoisting is the most critical and potentially the most dan¬gerous operation in underground mining. Many hazards are related to falls of miners and materials, ground instability, and malfunction or lack of safety devices. All have the potential to cause a cata¬strophic accident. A condition known as "slack rope" is particularly dangerous, expecially if it occurs without the operator's awareness. The most common occurrence of slack rope is in metal or nonmetal mines that have a history of ground control problems near the "haft. Approach Studies of hoist safety features and Mine Safely a and Heath Administration (MSHA) accident statistics suggests a need to measure wire rope tension, conveyance speed and position, and shaft guide misalignment. The most accurate data are obtained directly from the conveyance. Such data could warn of potentially dangerous situations during hoisting operations, as well as during inspections, maintenance, and lowering of large equipment. Figure I shows the concept for monitoring wire rope tension, conveyance position, and guide displacement. Progress to Date A conveyance-mounted system has been developed that monitors rope tension: hoist conveyance position, speed, and load; and shaft guide misalignment. A "flex-beam" load sensor mounted just above the- conveyance protects against slack and tight rope. The measurements are transmitted 60 times a second via wireless equipment from the conveyance to the hoist room. An encoder mounted on the conveyance eliminates the need to correct the position because of rope stretch. Figure 2 shows the encoder wheel and guide displacement sensors being mounted on a cage in¬spection deck. A potentiometer monitors misalignment of the shaft guides during inspections. Information about the cage or skip can be acquired by the shaft inspector using a hand-held indicator. Inspection can also he conducted remotely from a station or hoist room using the wireless link to a laptop computer. Figure 3 shows test results from a simulated slack rope condition. Patent Status NIOSH has a patent pending on this device entitled "Cable-Load¬Sensing Device." "INTRODUCTION In 1930 the Shenandoah-Dives Mining Co. near Silverton, Colo., put into operation a newly erected, 300-ton selective flotation plant to mill complex ores from its nearby mine. The operation was a steady producer and was enlarged to treat 600 to 800 tons a day. In 1942 the company opened and started milling an area in the mine containing semioxidized ore. The valuable mineral content of this ore was considerably higher than in, the straight sulfide ore previously handled alone. The mixture of clean sulfide and semi-oxidized ore was difficult to treat; consequently, tailing losses, especially with respect to lead, were high. A few years later, in order to study the possibilities of obtaining higher recoveries by a modification of the mill flow sheet, a 1,200-pound sample of mill, feed, taken over a period of several days by the company, was submitted to the Mississippi Valley Experiment Sta¬tion for testing-. Although this sample proved to contain more than twice as much lead as the average yearly mill feed, the same problem of recovering the oxidized values was present.A résumé of the ore-dressing treatment used in the Shenandoah-Dives mill follows. After crushing, the ore passes through a ball mill, the minus 5-mesh discharge of which is distributed to three tables. A finished lead concentrate is made on the tables, and the table tailing goes to the classifier which is in closed circuit with the ball mill. The classifier overflow is treated -by flotation to obtain a bulk sulfide concentrate at a relatively coarse size. The bulk concentrate is thickened and reground to about 95 percent minus 325-mesh before flotation treatment to separate a lead-copper and a zinc concentrate. A typical monthly average showed that the table concentrate contained about 45 percent lead, 1 percent copper, 4 percent zinc, 12 ounces of gold, and 40 ounces of silver; that the lead flotation concentrate contained '35 percent load, 6 percent copper, 7 percent zinc, 3.5 ounces of gold, and 50 ounces of silver; and that the zinc flotation concentrate contained 2 percent lead, 0.5 percent copper, 60 percent zinc, 0.15 ounces of gold, and 4 ounces of silver. Recoveries in salable products were roughly b5 percent of the lead, 70 percent of the copper, 45 percent of the zinc, 85 percent of the gold, and b5 percent of the silver."

"Underground mine fires can significantly influence mine ventilation airstreams, in some cases throttling or even reversing airflows. As a result, the performance of a metal and nonmetal mine stench fire warning system, which depends on the ventilation to carry the vital warning signal, under fire conditions is different from performance under nonfire conditions. The safety of underground miners can be jeopardized if the warning signal is delayed. This Bureau of Mines report describes research to investigate fire and stench warning system interactions. A computer model is presented that permits quantitative analysis of stench warning signal delays as a function of fire location and intensity. The results of a case study involving computer simulations of stench distribution in a hypothetical mine network subject to various fire exposures are also discussed. This case study illustrates a technique for identifying the areas within a mine that are subject to unacceptable warning signal delays, thereby enabling preemptive action by mine personnel, such as redeployment of stench injectors. INTRODUCTIONFires are an ever-present threat to the safety of underground miners. Since the smoke and toxic gas produced by a mine fire can be spread rapidly by the mine's ventilation system, mine evacuation must be accomplished as quickly as possible in the event of fire. In metal and nonmetal mines, the most common means of passing the fire warning signal to each miner is the stench system. The typical stench system utilizes ethyl mercaptan, a highly odoriferous organic compound, injected on the surface into the compressed and/or ventilation airstreams. Upon smelling the stench, workers evacuate the mine according to an emergency preplan.Although the stench system has been used successfully for over 60 yr, it has several serious shortcomings, owing to certain chemical properties of ethyl mercaptan and to certain performance characteristics and limitations of present injection systems.Recent Bureau research succeeded in upgrading the overall safety and effectiveness of the stench system through the use of a superior stench odorant and the development of improved stench injection equipment (1).4 This research has also investigated a specialized computer simulation model capable of calculating the precise concentration of stench in any mine ventilation network branch at any time after stench release (2). An adaptation of the computer model now enables the analysis of stench system and ventilation system interactions under the influence of a mine fire."

"Using propidium assay and flow cytometry, we examined how silica exerts its toxicity toward phagocytic cells employing the human neutrophil as a model. This toxicity appears to be associated with calcium bound to silica. Once the silica with calcium is phagocytized, the extra calcium causes the death of the cell. Using ""Ca we found that 6 to 10% of millimolar calcium is bound to milligram amounts of respirable-sized silica (diameter of 5 µ.m or less) at physiological pH. If the silica particles arc coated with an organosilanc (Prosil 28). calcium binding is decreased by 60% as is cell death. Pretreating with INDO IAM (a chelator of intracellular calcium) reduces the cellular death by 80%. Nonfibrogcnic particles- polystyrene beads or coal dust-produced 10% or less cell death in a 4-h period. Silica with no added, external calcium appears to exert toxicity to neutrophils; however, pretreating cells with EDT A decreases cellular death to the level of nonfibrogcnic particles. Chronic toxicity with silica-calcium appears similar to the chronic toxicity in gout where particles cause a cycle of inflammation. c 1993 Academic Press, Inc.Silicosis is an occupational disease caused by the inhalation of fine particles of silica, usually between 0.1 and 5 µ.m in diameter (1). A recent hypothesis explaining silica's toxicity suggested that surface free radicals caused damage to cells (2). This explanation appears doubtful, however, since the addition of silica to water, such as that found in biological systems, quenches free radicals; also, such a hypothesis does not provide basis for a persistent inflammatory pattern that lasts for years. Kane et al. (3) proposed that silica's toxicity resulted from an excessive concentration of calcium ions within the phagocytic cell (macrophages). However, the mechanism that was capable of linking silica to an excess of intracellular, ionic calcium was not explained. The surface of silica is certainly involved because covering the surface with polymers or phospholipids decreases silica's toxicity (4-6).When silica is engulfed by macrophages platelet activating factor and leukotrienes are produced (7, 8). This is the same inflammatory pattern produced by phagocytic cells exposed to the calcium ionophore A23187 and ionic calcium. How could silica be acting like A23187? Perhaps calcium binds to silica extracellulary and then is released intracellulary following phagocytosis; the latter process, in a sense a ""piggy back"" process, would permit activation of inflammation and cell death mechanisms."

"A search for manganese ore by core-drill exploration was carried out by the Bureau of Mines in the Philipsburg mining district in Granite County, Mont., in 1939 and 1940. This work was based on detailed studies of the manganese ore bodies of the district previously made by the Geological Survey.In 1949 further search for manganese in the district was deemed advisable. Diamond drilling was begun the following year as a joint program by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines with the primary purposes of probing ore-leasing structures and extending the limits of known ore bodies. A secondary objective was to test a geologic theory based on a new conception of manganese-ore localization. The exploration targets were designated and the drilling results interpreted by the Geological Survey, and the Bureau of Mines was responsible for the drilling, sampling, and core handling. Improved drilling equipment and methods were utilized in an effort to obtain better core recoveries than resulted from the earlier drilling campaign.The Philipsburg mining district, Granite County, Mont., is 27 miles south of Drurrnnond, about 45 miles airline northwest of Butte, and 1 mile east of Philipsburg. During the course of the investigation patented lode-mining claims owned by the American Machine & Metals, Inc., the Contact Mines, Inc., and the Moorlight Mining Co. were diamond drilled.The district has been an important source of domestic manganese dioxide ore since local recognition of the mineral's importance during World War I. Peak annual output in 1918 of about 127,000 tons of manganese ore was utilized principally by the steel industry. A small but relatively steady output has persisted to the present to satisfy demands by battery manufacturers for battery-grade manganese dioxide.The known manganese deposits of the district are in sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic age. These rocks lie along a north-trending anticline traversed by a series of east-west tension veins. The east flank of the anticline terminates at a steep-dipping fault contact against a small granodiorite batholith.Replacement deposits of manganese oxides and carbonates occur locally in or closely associated with tension veins cutting calcareous rocks, or adjacent to the intrusive. Rhodochrosite has been a common accessory mineral in deposits valuable chiefly for lead, zinc, and silver. Some of the replacement deposits characteristically are irr2gular in outline, whereas others have fairly regular walls marking the limits of favorable beds."

Highwall mining is an important coal mining method. It appears that upwards of 60 highwall miners are presently in operation, and they may account for approximately 4% of total U.S. coal production. A review of the Mines Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data over the 20 year period from 1983 to 2002 identified 9 fatalities attributable to auger and highwall mining of which inadequate ground control accounted for 1/3. In the past 5 years, 1 fatality occurred in highwall mining. Estimates of the manpower requirements in highwall mining suggest that its fatality rate is essentially the same as for surface coal mining, thus highwall mining appears to be a very safe modern mining method. Highwall stability is the major ground control related safety concern, and operators are required to develop and follow an appropriate highwall mining ground control plan. The plans usually specify the following geotechnical parameters: hole width, maximum hole depth, maximum overburden depth, seam thickness, web pillar width, barrier pillar width and number of holes between barriers. Calculated web pillar stability factor exceeded 1.3 for most designs evaluated. This study examined records from 5,289 highwall miner holes with a total completed footage of about 2,560,000 feet to understand the reasons for early pull out. Average lost footage is typically about 20% of planned footage. Only 35% of the holes reached planned depth, and 20% were short due to rockfalls. Water and adverse geology accounted for 15% of the losses. Mechanical/electrical problems, guidance, and slope stability problems accounted for the remaining 30%. Web pillar stability factor for these holes also exceeded 1.3 in 95% of cases. Best practices to avoid trapped miners include: avoid mining in stream valleys, avoid mining near outside corners, careful alignment of each hole and the use of an onboard guidance system. Several issues in highwall mining ground control require further investigation including highwall mining through old auger workings, highwall mining near old underground mines, multiple-seam and multiple lift highwall mining and finally the size and frequency of barrier pillars.

ISO8662-4, “Hand-held portable power tools - Measurement of vibrations at the handle - Part 4: Grinders” is under revision. The new revision shall harmonize ISO 20643 “Mechanical vibration - Hand-held and hand-guided machinery - Principles for evaluation of vibration emission” which, among others, requires measurements in three directions and declared values related to the upper quartile of real-use vibration. To get the most suitable test method, a round robin test was made for evaluation of the two test methods proposed by the ad-hoc group working with this standard revision. Methods Seven laboratories measured the vibration from four grinders of different sizes, with and without autobalancing units. The laboratories come from universities, health & safety laboratories and grinder manufacturers. Two measurement methods are evaluated with respect to repeatability and reproducibility: 1. Grinding on a well-defined mild steel bar with depressed center wheels according to detailed test instructions. The test sequence starts and ends with 10 seconds of running the grinder in the air, when measuring the unbalance contribution to the vibration coming from the unbalance of the grinding wheel. Between these runs the average vibration during 60 seconds of grinding is measured. Three operators do five grinding tests per grinder. 2. Measurements using an aluminum unbalance disc similar to the one defined in ISO8662-4. Each operator runs the grinder four times, between each run the unbalance is moved 180 degrees to avoid variations caused by the play between the test wheel and the spindle. The averaging time is 10 seconds. Each grinder is tested by three operators. Repeatability is the spread within a lab between operators and over short time period for one machine and reproducibility is the spread between laboratories and over longer time periods for one machine. Instrumentation and transducer location are chosen according to ISO8662-4 and circulated test instructions. Results Both the repeatability and reproducibility is poor for the real grinding test, see figure 1. The coefficient of variation for repeatability is approximately 40% higher for the grinding test and the coefficient of reproducibility is 60% higher for the grinding test than for the unbalance disc test.

During the first quarter of 1973 ADL worked closely with PMSRC staff, under an extremely compressed time schedule, on all aspects of the detailed planning, organization and overall coordination and preparation of the lectures and in-mine demonstrations for the Bureau's Technology Transfer Seminar on Mine Communications given in March of 1973 to representatives of the mining industry. Our efforts centered on the detailed organization and preparation of each of the five technical seminar lectures and associated supporting material, and the coordination of tasks assigned to ADL and other seminar participants. Revised and expanded drafts of the seminar papers were prepared from rough draft versions obtained from PMSRC, Collins Radio and ADL staff. Measurements were made to gather key data on the operation and performance of each of the following systems installed in the Bruceton Safety Research Mine; call alert paging, roof bolt paging, section wireless radio, and guided wireless radio systems. These data were analyzed, manufacturer's equipment specifications utilized, and calculations made to provide performance curves and data for each of the above systems. A substantial amount of artwork was conceived and prepared for 35 m slides, system identification posters in the mine, and seminar handouts. This artwork included some forty 8-1/2" x 11" line sketches, graphs, block diagrams, circuit diagrams, coverage maps, and other line drawings; five 30" x 40" block diagram system identification posters suitable for in-mine use; a 20" x 30" detail perspective illustration of a representative coal mine layout; forty viewgraphs; and seventy 35 m slides of the artwork and word charts. Conferences, discussions and review sessions were held with conference participants to help coordinate the various efforts, obtain technical information, and make final plans regarding the lecture presentations, associated visual aids, and the communication system installations to be demonstrated in the Bruceton mine. These meetings included final systems checkouts and dry run presentations and reviews of the lectures and mine demonstrations. This phase of the seminar effort concluded with R. Lagace and R. Spencer of ADL participating in two days of seminar presentations in the lecture hall and in the Bruceton mine.

This report on water requirements for the New Mexico mineral industry includes data on industrial operations closely related to mineral production. It contains general information concerning public water supplies at five principal cities and a short discussion of water needs for agriculture. Background data are presented regarding the geography, hydrography, and water laws of New Mexico, as well as precipitation and evaporation characteristics of the State. Most of the information on source, quantity, distribution, cost, and treatment of water was obtained in interviews with company representatives. Water systems at 46 operations are illustrated by schematic waterflow diagrams. The study revealed that the New Mexico mineral industry in 1962 used about 16 billion gallons of new water and reused 152 billion gallons, a total usage of 168 billion gallons. Consumption amounted to 7.6 billion gallons. Of the 16 billion gallons of new water, 11.9 billion gallons was "self- supplied" from ground water sources, and 2.6 billion gallons was self supplied from surface sources. Approximately 1.5 billion gallons was purchased. Some of the water from company-owned wells is piped as far as 30 miles. Reported costs of the self-supplied new water range from 1 to 20 cents per 1,000 gallons and average 8 cents per 1,000 gallons for power and maintenance. Inadequacy of the supply of new water at many operations necessitates large-scale recirculation. Reported costs for recirculating water (power and maintenance) average 1.8 cents per 1,000 gallons. For the entire New Mexico mineral industry in 1962, the value of product was $42 per 1,000 gallons of new water intake and $88 per 1,000 gallons consumed. Analyses of 40 water samples, listed in the appendix, show the wide range in water quality at plants throughout the State. Projection of the 1962 water requirements of the mineral industry indicate that the total demand for new water will increase from the 16 billion gallons used in 1962 to 24 billion gallons in 1980, a 50 percent increase; and to 36 billion gallons in 2000, which is 125 percent more than the 1962 intake of new water.
