The Federal Bureau of Mines reviewed the status of tungsten deposits of Utah in 1959. Industrial requirements of tungsten during emergencies have exceeded the domestic supply, and a knowledge of the sources of this strategic element may be helpful in the future. Tungsten occurs as the mineral scheelite in deposits that have been developed or explored on approximately 60 properties in 10 of the Great Basin ranges of Utah, none of which were being worked in 1957-59. Ores from most of the productive areas are similar in that they are contained in tactite deposits on or near the contact of calcareous and acidic intrusive rocks. The tactite ores consist predominantly of the silicate minerals garnet, epidote, and diopside and the carbonate rocks limestone or dolomite. Scheelite, where present, is disseminated irregularly in the tactite. Tungsten ores from Utah mainly have been produced from small deposits worked in World Wars I and II and the Korean campaign. The ores were either hand sorted to a grade ranging from 0.5 to 1.0 percent tungsten trioxide (W03) or were beneficiated in small mills to higher grade concentrates. The largest reserve appears to be in the area of the Notch Peak intrusive in the House Range, Millard County. A large part of the reserve in the House Range is mineralized tactite containing 0.2 to 0.3 percent W03. Research on flotation by the Bureau of Mines has indicated a method of concentrating scheelite in tactite ores that average 0.25 percent W03, with at least 85 percent recovery. The concentrate assays more than 5 percent W03 and can be processed into artificial scheelite ready for industrial use.

Procedures for separating columbium and tantalum have been developed by the Bureau of Mines as part of a broad research program on the utilization of low-grade ores of columbium and tantalum, Columbium and tantalum compounds of greater than 99 percent purity have been obtained by application of the solvent extraction separation system: Hydrofluoric acid-sulfuric acid-methyl iso-butyl ketone. This system is unique in that it not only separates columbium from tantalum, but also separates these two metals from other metallic impurities. The system is effective for separating the metals irrespective of the tantalum and columbium ratio of the starting materials. Investigations in which the spent feed obtained from the initial coextraction step was recycled to the system indicated that efficiency was increased, and cost was reduced without impairing product purity. Continuous tests demonstrated that this solvent extraction system could be used in large-scale equipment without loss in efficiency or in purity of products. The separation of columbium and tantalum has been difficult because of the similarity in their chemical bahavior. Many methods have been proposed for separating these two elements, but most methods either did not achieve satisfactory separation or were tedious and time consuming. The Marignac process (3, 4)4 developed in 1866 was the only method used commercially until recently. This separation procedure is based on the difference in solubility in aqueous solution of potassium tantalum fluoride and potassium columbium oxyfluoride. Current commercial practice appears to favor solvent extraction as a method for separating tantalum from columbium (1). Several efficient methods for separating columbium from tantalum by solvent extraction (2, 9, 8) were reported earlier from this laboratory.

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal in the United States suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known (measured plus indicated) recoverable reserves of all coking coals; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and (3) to study the carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making. This is the fourth of a series of reports giving the results of studies by counties under phase (1) of the investigation. It covers Armstrong County, Pa., which comprises parts of the Foxburg, Clarion, Brookville, Kittanning, Bural Valley, Smicksburg, Freeport, Elders Ridge, and Indiana quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A base map for each bed in each quadrangle was made to the scale of 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, locations of drill holes, bed and total coal thicknesses, and the outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds 0 to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and more than 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into "measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas, areas excluded from the estimate, and areas outside the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps, Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

The Bureau of Mines analyzed the effects of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon on the tensile properties of electrorefined vanadium in terms of the Petch equation. The effects of the different impurities and grain sizes on the yield and flow stress between 2730 and 770 K were studied. For specimens of like composition, the values of the Petch parameters 01 and ky obtained by two different methods, extrapolation and grain size, were nearly the same. For high-purity electrorefined vanadium, the 01 value at 2730 K was 10,300 psi (5,150 psi shear). The 01 values for this metal at 1950 and 2730 K were lower by factors of 3 to 4 than for three less pure samples of commercial vanadium metal of equivalent grain size. Nitrogen was more effective than oxygen in increasing 01' the increase being about twice as much for the same impurity level. Carbon produced a slight increase in 01 up to 0.024 percent and then a gradual decrease in 01 to 0.11 percent, the maximum carbon content studied. The corresponding ky values followed the same trend in regard to oxygen and nitrogen additions, whereas the addition of carbon produced no variations at either temperature. Dislocations in vanadium are anchored by carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen with increasing firmness in that order. The high purity of electrorefined vanadium was confirmed by low yield stress and high ductility throughout the low temperature range. The metal also exhibited profuse twinning with high ductility at 1230 and 770 K. The effective surface energy for fracture, y, was found to lie between 3.3 and 3.6 x 1()4 erg cm-2?

The pegmatite investigations at the Rapid City, S. Dak., Experiment Station during; the pact 3 years have been primarily a study of recovering beryl from nonlithium-bearing pegmatite rock by continuous-testing methods. Beryl concentrates containing 25 to 88 percent beryl were produced from rock that ranged in beryl content from 0.1 to 2.5 percent. The beryl recovery ranged upward from 70 percent but averaged better than 80 percent. Although promising results have been obtained with flotation methods for upgrading these concentrates to standard specifications, additional work is needed to improve and simplify the procedure. In addition, it was demonstrated that several potentially useful coproducts could also be recovered from pegmatite rock. The principal coproducts were mica, feldspar, and quartz. A heavy-mineral product also was made from pegmatites containing tin, tantalum, and columbium. The recovery if these minerals in products meeting the specifications of the commercial users has been reserved for future study. The investigations also included studies on extraction of beryllium from both high-grade beryl and flotation concentrates of medium beryllium content. The procedure investigated consisted of sintering beryl or beryl flotation concentrates with limestone, acid curing the resulting sinter with sulfuric acid to dissolve the beryllium, and water leaching to extract the beryllium. Over 90 percent of the beryllium was extracted by this procedure. Most of the optimum conditions and quantities of reagents were determined for dissolving the beryllium. As aluminum and iron also were taken into solution by the acid, further research is needed on methods of recovering high-grade beryllium salts from the solutions containing these elements.

"INTRODUCTION .As part of its spot drilling program, the Bureau of Mines core-drilled seven holes on the Alexander and Barber properties in Spartanburg County, S. C.Extensive surface float and outcrops of sillimanite schist on these properties appeared to justify drilling, which did not prove satisfactory, however, owing to the spotty occurrence of the schist bodies and the poor core recovery in the decomposed schist.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Supernatant media of dust-exposed pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAMs) were inactive in assays for both Interleukin-1 and fibroblast growth factors (FGF). We have begun to evaluate several factors that may interfere with dust-PAM interactions. To determine the effect of sterilization on the activity of dusts, PAMs were exposed to autoclaved dust, heat-sterilized dust or to dust that had not been heated. Supernatants from the first two groups were inactive in the FGF assay, but supernatant from PAMs exposed to unheated dusts stimulated growth of lung fibroblasts. Recent data have revealed that freshly crushed mineral dusts possess labile free radicals that are absent in dust that has been stored for more than a few days. Suspensions .were prepared of a "stale" sample of anthracite dust 867 and of a freshly ground sample of the same dust. These suspensions were instilled intratracheally into guinea pigs under general anesthesia. Two, five or eight days later, PAMs were collected from the lungs by bronchoalveolar lavage, and the cells were counted. At two and five days after instillation, all lavage suspensions contained 70 to 85% PAMs, of which 5 to 18% contained phagocytized dust particles. On day eight there were again 80-84% PAMs in all suspensions, but in the presence of "fresh'" dust, 48% of PAMs. had phagocytized particles in comparison to 16% in the presence of '"stale'" dust. A similar experiment was performed in short-term cell culture. During 24 hours, >95%. of PAMs phagocytized dust particles, whether or not the dust was "stale" or '"fresh". Our studies are being extended to determine the effect of (1) removing surface oil contaminants by organic extraction and (2) suspending dusts without surfactant.

In overview, the world's mineral industry in 1989 registered gains over its 1988 performance, but these gains were by no means as pronounced as had been those of 1988. The traditional statistical measures of mineral industry performance, namely production, trade, and consumption levels, reflected significant growth in most industry sectors from crude material extraction through the gamut of down- stream processing. Growth in market economy countries generally exceeded growth in the centrally planned economy countries as a result of a variety of causes that will be covered subsequently, but even among the centrally planned countries there were some upturns. In contrast to these measures of the soundness of the industry, the situation for nonfuel mineral and metal prices was less satisfactory than in 1988, and low crude oil prices continued as a problem for the all-important petroleum sector, despite some gains during the year. The oil price situation mitigated against price increases for competitive fuels. Although this was unfavorable for fuel producers, it remained advantageous to consumers, including nonfuel mineral producers, processors, and transporters. Thus it cannot be viewed as a negative factor for the whole of the global mineral industry. Global crude mineral output value was estimated at nearly $1,420 billion in current dollars, an increase of 9% over the 1988 level, and an increase in current dollar terms for the seventh consecutive year. Measured in terms of constant dollars, however, adjusting for inflation, the increase was only 4.7% compared with the 1988 level. Despite the prolonged growth trend, the 1989 crude mineral output value level was still 3.2% below the record high set in 1980, which was $1,467 billion in terms of 1989 dollars.

Accidents underground are being avoided and mines made safer by means of revising and adding to their mining laws , by enforcing them through mine inspection departments , and by hearty co - operation with other agencies working miners ' safety . The U. S. I do not regard the criticism by Rankin of my work as valid or even meaningful. I strongly reject the assertion by Rankin that my results are invalid. As stated in my paper, the equation to solve (in e. m.u. ) is: [ ] where n2 =4 ps? . This may be rewritten as three scalar equations in Cartesian coordinates, one of which is [ ] The equation to be solved is the diffusion equation, and it is not appropriate to consider waves in this context. In the method a point-wise solution to the problem is approximated. As discussed in my paper the approach taken at discontinuities in conductivity is to choose the normal component of [E] at the discontinuity as the average of the normal components on either side of the discontinuity. This is similar to the well-known assumption made in obtaining Fourier series representations for piecewise continuous functions (Pipes, 1958; p. 51). In the geophysical problem this means that the discontinuity is approximated by a transition zone, which is a very good approximation for such cases. By using this approach, both the values of the function and its derivatives give a good estimate for those associated with the physical situation. It is not apparent and Rankin has not shown that "all the field components and the derivatives are grossly distorted in the region about the boundary" for geophysically realistic situations. He has given no evidence to support his assertation that the results are "invalid". Although Rankin declares that one cannot calculate the electric components from the magnetic, in his discussion he has not stated why this is so. After once calculating the magnetic components the electric components may be calculated, but one must insure that the initial solution is accurate enough to prevent significant round-off errors.

This report has been prepared in response to a request by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Fairbanks Alaska District Office that the Bureau of Mines quantitatively assess the potential supply of minerals from undiscovered deposits in the White Mountains National Recreation Area (WMNRA) and the western part of the North Steese National Conservation Area (SNCA) in Alaska. The assessment will be used to assist in future land-use decision-making. Resource Management Plans (RMPs) for the WMNRA and the SNCA were approved by the BLM in 1986. These plans imposed significant restrictions on new mineral development in the two areas. The level of public concern regarding these actions, especially on the part of the mining industry, has spurred BLM to seek additional information about the potential supply of minerals from the two areas with assistance from the Bureau of Mines. The assessment focuses on an area within the WMNRA and the SNCA which has been administratively closed to mineral entry. The study area encompassed approximately 1.24 million acres and included all of the WMNRA and the western portion of the North SNCA (fig. ES-1). Three quantitative estimates of the potential supply of minerals from the study area were developed: 1) For all lands in the study area, assuming that they are open to mineral entry-the baseline analysis; 2) For those lands which have been closed to mineral entry; and 3) For eleven prospective mineral activity areas, assuming that all are open to mineral entry.

ALTHOUGH MANYSTUDIES HAVE SHOWN an association between operating heavy construction equipment and symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), little research has been performed that systematically characterizes the exposure of operating engineers to ergonomic hazards. This study evaluated: 1) vibration at the seat/operator interface;2) transmissibility of vibration in the Z-axis; 3) psychophysical ratings of vibration level and vibration discomfort; and 4) postural requirements of the job. Results indicate that the digging operation had higher levels of total weighted acceleration than high- or low-idling conditions. Transmissibility data showed that the seat amplified vibration, particularly in the lower frequencies. Seats demonstrated that they may not be sufficient in protecting operators from long-term effects of vibration exposure. High positive correlation was found among subjective ratings (vibration discomfort and vibration level), but moderate positive correlation was found between subjective ratings and quantitative vibration levels. Postural evaluations revealed that the operators were required to assume awkward postures of the neck, shoulder and trunk while performing their jobs. Work-related injuries and illnesses pose a continuing threat to the health and well-being of American workers. The construction industry has been historically recognized as having higher rates of fatality, injury and illness than other industries (McVittie285+; BLS). In 1994, an estimated 218,800 lost-work-day injuries were reported in the construction industry (BLS). Construction also had the second-highest incidence rate for sprains and strains. Although the industry has made progress since then, injuries and illnesses, including MSDs, continue to because for concern.

Coal production from underground coal mines has been important to the development of the industrial economy of the United States. Environmental problems have developed from some abandoned operations. These problems include: mine and refuse pile drainage, subsidence, unsafe mine openings and to a lesser extent mine gases, slope stabilities, mine and refuse pile fires and abandoned equipment and structures. Field investigations in three eastern coal mining districts, two in Ohio and one in Illinois, were performed to document the mine closure procedures used and subsequent problems that developed. The purpose was to identify, evaluate, and rank the seriousness of these problems. Based upon this evaluation, the undesirable present day situations could have been avoided or at least minimized by varying certain mining practices or mine closure procedures. It was found that federal regulations address all of these problems during the pre mining, active mining and post mining phases except for abandoned equipment which is the least threatening problem category. Ideally current practice would prevent future problems. However, the extensive and complicated nature of the legislation, environment and mining practices will necessitate adjustments to the law. The investigator recommends the following: 1) Goal oriented legislation encouraging complete resource extraction, standardization and compilation of mining generated hydrological data, periodic review of the coal mining regulations, and improved communication and cooperation between coal interests, regulators and the public. 2) Permitting effluent limitations to accurately reflect natural conditions. 3) Solidly back filling shafts and individual assessment of sealing or capping requirements. 4) Installing shaft vent pipes into the fill material to intercept and vent methane.

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the Diamond Peak area comprising 183,000 acres in the Challis and Targhee National Forests in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. More than 3,000 mining claims were located in three mining districts between the years 1882 and 1986. Approximately 230 mining claims in and the 150 claims adjacent to the study area were current in 1986, when Bureau of Land Management mining records were researched for this study. A total of 1,270 samples were collected from these sites (30 were for alluvial placer). Results of the investigation help determine the suitability of the study area for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Lead-, silver-, zinc-, copper-, and gold-bearing minerals occur as veins and replacement bodies in shear and fault zones in Precambrian and Paleozoic calcareous Sedimentary rocks that have been complexly folded and faulted. Total production from the three mining districts in the study area was more than 150,000 tons of ore between 1901 and 1982. Approximately 11,600 tons of subeconomic resources consisting of lead, silver, zinc and copper were identified within the area. Over 37,500 tons of lead and zinc subeconomic resources were identified just outside the area. In addition, lead-, silver-, and zinc-mineral resources were identified at 4 mines within 2 miles of the study area. Iron mineral resources were also identified just outside the area.

"The Bureau of Mines for some time advocated the firing of all blasts in coal mines as single shots, and this method of firing is the general practice in American bituminous-coal mines. All single shots can be fired with permissible single-shot units so designed that they will not ignite mixtures of methane and air.If several shots in a face are fired singly it is necessary to return the face after each shot. In some mines having steeply pitching coal seams, this may be dangerous or even impossible, under these conditions shots are usually fired simultaneously.Several shots cannot be fixed simultaneously with permissible single-shot blasting units, and safe types of multiple shots blasters are not readily available. This means that the firing of multiple shots in gassy mines is usually accompanied by the possibility of gas ignition as the blast occurs.Tests have been made at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station to determine the possibility of developing safe types of multiple-shot units suitable for such use, or of applying other type safely in gassy sections of mines where firing shots singly is impracticable.The tests may be divided into the following four groups:1. Tests to demonstrate hazard in the use of existing types of multiple-shot units of the portable generator type.2. Tests to show the electrical characteristics of multiple-shot generator units relative to the possibility of preventing igniting sparks and of modifying the design and application of such units in furthering safety."

1. Under the conditions of the tests described herein, the proper use of an incombustible stemming plug of the type discussed prevented ignitions of gas in all tests during the firing of 21 single shots of permissible explosive in cool. In two tests with multiple blasting (four and five shots each) no ignitions resulted. 2. The results of a few tests in this investigation and of numerous tests made previously indicate that fire-clay stemming of the same weight as an incombustible plug provides about the same degree of protection as the plug against gas ignitions during blasting of coal by permissible explosives. 3. The hazard of gas ignition on firing charges of non-permissible 40-percent gelatin dynamite in coal was reduced but not eliminated when the shot holes were stemmed with one or two incombustible plugs or with an equivalent weight of fire clay. 4. On the basis of this investigation, the Bureau of Mines considers the proper use of incombustible stemming plugs of the design tested, under the conditions of the tests described in this paper, to be of equivalent safety as the same weight of fire-clay stemming. This report does not constitute approval or disapproval of the incombustible stemming plugs by the Bureau of Mines. 5. The test data indicate that misfired charges in shot holes stemmed with the incombustible stemming plug cannot be disposed of with certainty by the procedure recommended by the manufacturer. In this investigation the misfired charges failed to detonate in 30 percent of the trials.

"The economic features of coal mining must take into account the drain on the man power. Study over a recent 5-year period reveals an average yearly loss of 2,125 underground men, of whom 1,182 are killed by falls of roof and coal, and according to recent data compiled by the Bureau of Mines it is estimated that 54,000 men sustain lost—time disabling injuries from the same cause.Under normal activity of the mines approximately 50 lives are taken by falls of roof during every 10 days the mines are operated, or 5 persons are killed per day, which, at a compensation charge of $5,000 each, amounts to $25,000 per day. Add to this the similar number killed by causes other than by falls of roof and we have $50,000 as an approximate daily fatality charge for each day the mines operate. On the basis of 200 working days per year, this amounts to the alarming figure of $10,000,000 annually. An investment at 5 per cent to yield this amount would require $200,000,000, which is equivalent to a capital investment of $0.40 per ton of coal, produced annually, on the basis of 500 million tons. These figures apply only to fatalities for which a fixed or stated amount is paid for compensation and do not include the compensation and hospitalization paid for the approximately 103,000 upon whom idleness is enforced by a lost-time disability injury. In one State having an annual production equal to approximately 30 per cent of the total bituminous production of the United States, the most recent data shows that for each fatality there are eight serious injuries causing 60 days or more lost time. The frequency rate of accidents for that State is less than the average for the United States, and so a conservative comparison may be made by using the figures of that State in estimating the total serious injuries, which gives 16,000 as losing 60 days or more. The average number of underground employees in the coal mines of the United States for the past 10 years has been approximately 570,000; the annual underground fatalities amount to approximately 2,000 and non-fatalities to 108,000, or a total of 110,000, which means that one out of every 5.17 employees ,or 19.3 per cent, receives an injury which results in either a fatality or a lost-time disability; this figure in a little over five years will reach a number equivalent to 100 per cent of all underground workmen. Against this is the record of many miners who have worked 25 years or more without a lost—time disability injury, indicating that coal mining is not necessarily productive of injury or death to workers.In the matter of falls of roof, it is found that 85 to 87 per cent of all fatalities occur at the working face, face of a room or entry, or in pillar work. It is at the working face that the greatest roof hazards are encountered, and when about 75 per cent of the underground employees spend approximately 90 per cent of their working hours at the face, it is logical that there is where injury is most likely to occur.Although the roof hazards may vary in different beds of coal, experience has proved that roof hazards can be successfully controlled in all coal mines, essentially regardless of the character of the roof if constant care and attention are given by the management and employees in applying the principle of safety. In almost every mining district some companies maintain an extremely low frequency rate of injury, whereas in the same district with essentially the same roof conditions the opposite is true.A study has recently been made of a number of reports upon fatalities in one district of one of the principal coal—producing States and it showed that 50 lives had been lost at 23 mines as the result of falls of roof or sides. These reports were made by the mine officials, safety engineers, and safety committees and an attempt was made to give both the cause and the person or factor responsible for the fatality. "While control of dust-related diseases, the objective of the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust, is of prime importance from the human standpoint it is also essential to the economic well-being of the mining industry (FIGURE 23). Although significant progress has been made, the problem continues to be a major concern to the mining community. An increasing global demand for coal and other minerals means that production and the number of miners employed is on the rise. Therefore, the importance of this research to the mining industry cannot be overemphasized.The five areas of dust research are 1) control of dust generation, 2) dilution, dispersion and collection of dust in mine airways, 3) characterization of dust particles, 4) interaction of dust and lungs, 5) relationship of mine environment, geology, and seam characteristics to dust generation and mobility. Some experimental projects where the research is conducted almost exclusively in the laboratory may still rely on industry for imput. No industrial resources are necessary to the research of the non-experimental projects, for example computer modeling .The remaining research is classified as experimental and these projects do require interaction with industry in varying degrees. Periodic trips to mining sites in Western Pennsylvania, Southern Ohio, and West Virginia are necessary to record measurements or collect samples. Or companies may provide needed samples or equipment to the university for use in the laboratory. On several projects interaction is limited to advice or information supplied to the researcher by industry personnel."

Objective The main purpose of this video is to teach mine rescue personnel certain aspects of rescue work that are not traditionally taught. These include the strain caused by working continually under adverse conditions; the "survivor guilt" that occurs from being spared the fate of one's deceased cohorts; and the posttraumatic stress that may be experienced during the sometimes lengthy task of recovering the victims' bodies. Background On November 20, 1968, an explosion rocked the Farmington No. 9 Mine in northern West Virginia (figure 1). The explosion killed 78 of 99 miners who were working in the mine, including all but one member of the mine's rescue team. Some 30 years after the event, researchers from the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) conducted a video interview with Danny Kuhn (figure 2), the only Farmington No. 9 mine rescue team member who was not working that day and who did not die in the explosion. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), there are about 80 underground coal mine rescue teams in the United States, and according to the National Mining Association, there are more than 850 underground coal mines. This represents a significant decrease in both over the past decade. The low number of rescue teams is a concern because serious incidents, though fewer, still happen, and if a disaster occurs, there will be fewer rescue teams to respond. This would result in an increased need to use available human resources very efficiently. Much training to prepare these rescue teams still takes the form of what educators call "teaching to the test." In other words, teams practice in order to win mine rescue contests. This test-oriented approach has traditionally been augmented by interactions with others who have responded to real situations or by participating in actual incidents. Given few incidents and fewer rescue teams from whom to derive enrichment, the preparation of coal mine rescue personnel becomes a problem. Recently, more emphasis has been placed on active learning, such as working out problems in smoke. These sessions more nearly simulate the actual conditions that today's team members might rarely encounter. To properly prepare and retain the current coal mine rescue personnel who are left in the workforce, it is necessary not only to offer such hands-on experience, but also to replace the learning narratives that once were passed from team to team. The present video is intended to contribute in that capacity. Approach NIOSH researchers first learned of Mr. Kuhn in the fall of1998. Mr. Kuhn was contacted and agreed to an interview. An oral history interview was conducted with Mr. Kuhn in early November1998. After reviewing the videotape of the interview, researchers determined the content to be so rich as to warrant a second interview in a more formal setting. The second interview was done in early December 1998. During this interview, Mr. Kuhn spent about 2 hours describing the Farmington disaster, including the workplace climate leading up to the explosion, the events that took place in the 10 days after the explosion, and the nearly 10-year effort to safely and successfully recover most of the victims' bodies. The videotape of the second oral history interview with Danny Kuhn was reviewed and edited by NIOSH researchers for content. Careful attention was used to ensure that valuable information was presented, but within a reasonable timeframe. A detailed map of the Farmington No. 9 Mine was edited into the final video and used to highlight critical features as they were being described by Mr. Kuhn. Results and Accomplishments A 60-minute videotape and instructor's guide for use in safety training or other settings was completed. The target audience consists of all those who work in underground coal mines. This training video will help safety instructors better prepare mine rescue team members for the situations that they will encounter when engaging in extended rescue and recovery work.
