An investigation is made of the feasibility of developing compact transmit antennas and/or other means to efficiently couple VLF to MF band radio energy between portable wireless communication units in coal mines. The completely wireless communication ranges between two portable radios equipped with practically-sized reference loop antennas in representative coal mine environments are estimated. Antenna technology is assessed with respect to transmit moment, range, intrinsic safety, battery and wearability requirements to deter- mine the most suitable antenna types for use by miners. It is concluded that air-core bandolier loop antennas, and perhaps ferrite-loaded loop antennas, having peak transmit moments of about 2.5 ampere-m5 will be the most effective antenna choices for portable units. This choice, however, will not allow the range goal of 1350 feet to be attained in mines having unfavorable signal attenuation and noise environments. Rectangular air-core loops are compared with grounded horizontal-wire and vertical-wire mode exciters for fixed station applications. The potential for significantly increasing the wireless communication range by inductively coupling to communications and power lines in a mine is evaluated and found to be considerable based on theoretical coupling equations. Lastly, the theoretical performance of a hybrid noise cancelling diversity receiving technique that utilizes both the electric and magnetic field components of the ambient noise to improve the receiver output signal-to-noise ratio under certain adverse conditions is estimated and shown to be favorable when the magnetic and electric field noise components are highly correlated.

"INTRODUCTION Deposits of iron ore in Cherokee County, Tex., have been worked at various times in the pact, and the ore has been smelted in small local blast furnaces.Recently it was proposed to establish a charcoal blast furnace with a wood distillation plant to produce charcoal for fuel and byproducts. Financial assistance from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation was sought by George Easley and associates to enable them to purchase, move, and erect the furnace and build the required accessory plants. The furnace was to be moved from Pembroke, Fla.In August 1941, the Bureau of Mines was asked by the Office of Production Management to check the development work of Easley and associates and to ascertain (1) the iron-ore reserves, (2) the cost of mining ore and delivering it to the blast furnace, and (3) the grade and character of the ore. The Bureau of Mines was advised, while the investigation was in progress, that approximately 1,000,000 long tons of measured reserves would be sufficient to demonstrate the feasibility of operating the properties.Although deposits of iron ore are widely distributed in Cherokee County, only the Pryor Mountain, Banks and Cherokee, J. P. Acker, and Citizens State Bank tracts were sampled thoroughly by the Bureau of Mines. The iron-ore rights on these are owned by the New Birmingham Development Co., the Cherokee Development Co., or by individuals. Options to lease the ore rights were obtained by Easley, who obtained options on the Hawes Peach Orchard and Bradford tracts, also, which were examined only cursorily by the Bureau."

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known (measured plus indicated) recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and, (3) to study the carbonizing properties of coal and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke. This is the third of a series of reports giving results of studies by counties under part (1) of the investigation. This report covers Pike County, Ky., which comprises parts of the Harold, Williamson, Matewan, Gilbert, Pikeville, Regina, Hurley, Pound, and Clintwood quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A base map for each bed in each quadrangle was made to the scale of 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, locations of drill holes, bed and total coal thicknesses, and the outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds 0 to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and over 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into "measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas, areas excluded from the estimate but which may contain reserves based only on geologic inference, and areas outside of the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps. Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

"In presenting the results of this survey on consumption of ferrous scrap and pig iron for the year 1935 the Bureau of Mines, responding to requests from industry, seeks to fill a major gap that has long existed in the field of metalliferous raw-material statistics. This type of information is designed to meet the needs of: (1) Consumers of ferrous scrap. including operators of blast furnaces, steel mills, ferrous foundries, and rolling mills; (2) marketers of scrap iron and steel, including large brokers who sell, and dealers who collect, prepare, and sell the material; (3) large scrap producers; (4) producers of iron ore, with which scrap competes indirectly; and (5) other individuals and agencies interested in more general economic analysis, since the scrap market has repeatedly been cited as one of the most sensitive of all industrial barometers, If the survey prover as useful as now seems probable, it will be continued annually with possibly an enlarged scope of treatment.The Bureau appreciates that its first efforts in this field may not meet all expectations: but it hopes to develop gradually, through suggestions, advice, and criticism from the industrial groups most interested, a type of analysis that will accord closely with technical processes and best meet the needs of all groups vitally interested in supplies and use of ferrous scrap. Constructive criticism and suggestions from industry regarding improvements to be desired in the conduct of future surveys on this subject will therefore be warmly received by the Bureau."

"This report describes the trend of developments in electric brass-furnace practice in the last two years, and supplements Bureau of Mines Bulletin 202, ""Electric Brass-Furnace Practice"", which was published in 1922. In that bulletin it -as pointed out that some of the lines on which electric brass-furnace progress would take place were clear, but others were less so.Developments in foreign countries.Foreign brass-melters have not yet adopted electric melting to an extent comparable to its use in the United States. It is doubtful Whether all foreign countries combined use 100 electric brass furnaces; of these about 35 are of American make (Ajax, Detroit, Baily) and are operating in Canada, Mexico, England, France, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Norway, Germany, Argentina and Czecho-Slovakia.`The Rennerfelt furnace finds some use in Sweden (1)c, notwithstanding its high metal loss on alloys high in zinc, Two German firms are reported(2) to be using the Rochling-Rodenhauser induction furnace on bronze, the average energy consumption being given as 400 kw.-h. per ton. No comment is made on any trouble from the ""pinch effect"", A firm in Switzerland is reported (3) to use three 600-lb., direct-arc furnaces of its own design to melt babbitt, antimonial lead, coinage silver, nickel, copper, and brass. The metal loss on yellow-brass turnings is high. Use Of a direct-arc furnace in England, with precautions aimed to prevent surface overheating, vas abandoned (4) in favor of an Ajax furnace."

Approximately half of all the fuel energy used in the United states is now pro-vided by oil and natural gas. A persistent and rapid growth in energy demand during the last 3 decades has been absorbed largely by the liquid and gaseous rather than solid fuels. In 1948 the energy provided by coal was substantially the same as in 1920. Meanwhile, the use of oil and natural gas each had increased fivefold. On a per capita basis, the change is more significant. Coal consumption has dropped from about 6 tons per person to 4-1/2 tons, while oil has increased from 4-1/3 barrels to 14-1/3, and natural gas from 7,500 cubic feet to about 35,000. These facts would have only academic interest if the United States had unlimited supplies of all fuels. However, while the Nation's reserves of coal are adequate to meet our needs for centuries, those of oil and natural gas appear limited. It is obvious, therefore, that the security of our liquid-fuel position would be greatly enhanced if the supply could be based in an increasing degree on solid fuels, such as coal and oil shale, which make up more than 95 percent of our fuel reserves, instead of natural oil and gas. In addition, this would create new employment and help to stabilize the market for coal, which may be facing comparatively bleak prospects in the near future unless its position with respect to other fuels is improved.

In 1986 at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 2 acre North Sisters Rocks Wilderness Study Area (OR-12-8) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The Wilderness Study Area is located in Curry County, Oregon, about 15 miles north from Gold Beach. No mines, prospects, or mining claims were located inside the study area, and no mineral resources were identified. Stone from the study area could be quarried and used for construction purposes; however, two nearby quarries have sufficient stone to satisfy local construction needs. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and mineral resource potential of the North Sisters Rocks WSA (Wilderness Study Area) 1/ at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the North Sisters Rocks WSA for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

"SUMMARYThe J. D. Price property is in Crittenden County, Ky., about 5-1/2 miles west of Marion. The Levias-Crittenden Springs fault system traverses the property. Mines on 3 miles of the same fault system immediately northeast have produced about 250,000 tons of fluorspar ore. The Keystone property, adjacent on the northeast, has produced about 150,000 tons of ore. 3/About 1934, lessees, sank a shaft upon the Price property to a depth of 111.5 feet and crosscut from the bottom of the shaft to the principal fault. No ore was found. Later, in 1942-43, they explored the same fault by core-drilling, but this project also was unsuccessful in finding ore.The author visited the property in September 1944, and subsequently the Bureau further explored the property by core-drilling three holes. No ore was found.ACKNOWLEGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. Two types of flammability limits have been measured for various dusts in the Fike 1-m3 (1000-L) chamber and in the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) 20-L chamber. The first limit is the minimum explosible concentration (MEC), which was measured at several ignition energies. In addition to the three dusts studied previously (bituminous coal, anthracite coal, and gilsonite), this work continues the effort by adding three additional dusts: RoRo93, lycopodium, and iron powder. These materials were chosen to extend the testing to non-coal materials as well as to a metallic dust. The new MEC data corroborate the previous observations that very strong ignitors can overdrive the ignition in the smaller 20-L chamber. Recommendations are given in regard to appropriate ignition energies to be used in the two chambers. The study also considered the other limiting component, oxygen. Limiting oxygen concentration (LOC) testing was performed in the same 20-L and 1-m3 vessels for gilsonite, bituminous coal, RoRo93, and aluminum dusts. The objective was to establish the protocol for testing at different volumes. A limited investigation was made into overdriving in the 20-L vessel. The LOC results tended to show slightly lower results for the smaller test volume. The results indicated that overdriving could occur and that ignition energies of 2.5 kJ in the 20-L vessel would yield comparable results to those in the 1- m3 vessel using 10.0 kJ. The studies also illustrate the importance of dust concentration on LOC determinations.

U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine mineral resources and resource potential in and adjacent to the North fork Smith RARE II study area. Most mineral resources identified in this area are in laterites, highly-weathered residual soil zones. In the RARE II area, resources of nickel, cobalt, chromium, and magnesium were identified at 15 laterite properties and chromium resources at one chromite mine. Other commodities include copper, gold, silver, and mercury (fig. 1). Approximately 1,100 lode and 1,200 placer claims have been located in or adjacent to the area. Most placer claims are for literites. There are no patented claims or mineral leases. Forty laterite deposits on 15 ,properties within the RARE II area (fig. 2) contain about 16 million tons of identified marginal reserves and subeconomic resources containing nickel, cobalt, chromium, an magnesium (table 1). Most deposits have keen explored and are currently claimed. California Nickel Corporation is developing laterites on Gasguet Mountain, within and adjacent to the southeastern and western parts of the study area. If this project proceeds to production, a laterite processing plant on Gasquet Mountain would enhance the minability of other deposits in the study area. The Climax, PFM, DF, and Stone Corral properties (fig. 1, nos. 1, 6, 9, and 23) have deposits of sufficient tonnage and grade to attract mining interest; resources at these properties are in and adjacent to the RARE II area.

As a result of Synopsis 73-16 Dynadyne responded with an unsolicited proposal offering the Bureau of Mines to develop an ultra-low volume coal mine dust personal sampler. In the ensuing technical discussions the choice of a desirable volumetric rate became a focal point. While, the initial proposal was based on a volumetric rate in the area of 50 cc/min the Government expressed interest in a variety of mass flow rates ranging from 50 cc/min to 2000 cc/min. The physical characteristics such as weight, volume and configuration of a personal sampler are to a large extent - dependent on the operating volumetric rate. It became readily apparent that the optimum size of such an instrument as a function of volumetric rate was not known and that a study of the choice of optima was essential prior to beginning the development, Hence, the Government authorized a two phase approach to this project. Phase I was to include a Technical Evaluation Study of optimum characteristics in the range between 0. 1 to 2. 0 lpm. Based on these findings and in consultation with MESA personnel, the Bureau of Mines was to authorize the second phase that is, the development. Phase II, was to include the drawing of a set of performance specifications stating among others the desired operating volumetric rate. In this report, every effort was made not only to present the actual work done over the course of this development, but to reflect also our engineering "thinking" providing answers as to the "why" we preferred certain solutions over others. We believe that this added dimension is not only useful for the Government official evaluating this report, but also that the Government is entitled to it providing the official with an educational content useful in avoiding future costly repetitions of similar situations.

The increased costs of exploration and drilling of new oil fields and the continued success of water flooding in nearly depleted oil fields have created a demand for information on the results obtained from individual projects. The Bureau of Mines has published several reports concerning water-flood activity in the Mid continent area and at the request of the industry has continued to collect and disseminate this information. This report was written in response to these requests. It describes in detail the water-flooding projects in Anderson, Franklin, Linn, and Miami Counties, Kans., and includes methods of water treating and the results obtained. The production histories of each county and many water-flood projects are shown graphically from the date of the first development. Maps of most of the major projects, showing their status as of January 1, 1953 are presented also. The practice of injecting water to stimulate oil production was legalized in Kansas in 1935, and the first water-flooding project authorized in this four-county area was initiated by the Texas Co. in December 1935 in Linn County, Forty-nine projects2/ initiated in the area to January 1953 are estimated to have recovered approximately 10 million barrels of oil that could not have been produced by methods used previously. About 7,900 productive acres had been, or are, flooded by these projects, and approximately 1.36 million barrels of water had been injected.

"INTRODUCTION The Cphir Hill Consolidated mine was examined 2/ in January 1944. It was recommended that the mine be explored for the purpose of increasing of lead and zinc ore.The Bureau of Mines began exploratory work at the mine in June 1944 and completed it in June 1945. The work was planned to indicate ore that could be developed and extracted quickly and consisted of core drilling and trenching.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Its the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by cash exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, O. C. Ralston, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests.The work reported on in this paper was conducted under the supervision of S. R. This circular outlines salient facts regarding the manganese-ore industry in the United States and the world. It is founded chiefly upon published information available in the literature of the subject. The Bureau of Mines has in its files additional, more detailed data upon many of the topics presented very briefly here, and will endeavor to assist the mineral industries and public by giving further information in response to individual inquiries. The Bureau will welcome comments, criticisms, and contributions of data that may assist in making later additions of this circular more accurate, or in developing more fully its mineral files pertaining to manganese. In reporting the production of manganese-bearing ores in the United States the following classification has been adopted by the Bureau of Mines: (1) Metallurgical-grade ores, under which have been classified manganese ores containing 35 percent or more of manganese used in the manufacture of iron and steel, ferruginous manganese ore containing 10 to 35 percent of manganese, manganiferous iron ore containing 5 to 10 percent of manganese, and manganiferous zinc residuum; (2) battery ore; (3) fluxing ores, under which are classified ores that may contain a few ounces of silver and are rich enough in manganese to make them valuable chiefly for fluxing purposes in nonferrous smelters; and (4) miscellaneous ores, under which are classified the ores shipped to brick manufacturers, glass makers, and manufacturers of manganese chemicals.

This report describes in detail methods of making corrosion tests and chemical analyses that have been used extensively and satisfactorily in a study of plants in which various surface, waters and brines are conditioned and used for water flooding, brine disposal, and reservoir-pressure maintenance in Kansas, Oklahoma, and North Texas. The tests and analyses described were designed and adapted for use in the field in determining the relative corrosive and plugging tendencies of waters from various sources conditioned by different methods. Although the described methods were developed and used in testing oil-field waters in the Midcontinent oil-producing area of the United States, these same methods should be equally applicable to testing oil-field or highly mineralized waters throughout the world. Many of the methods used have been discussed by the writer (1)2/ previously, and some of them have been used for similar work in other laboratories. Early in the development of the practice of the subsurface injection of brines for disposal and increasing the recovery of oil, it became evident that different methods of chemical treatment and conditioning equipment would have to be devised to sustain desired injection rates into water-input wells. These changes became necessary because the highly mineralized waters produced with petroleum from deep formations became chemically unstable when pumped to the surface, owing to loss of dissolved gases as pressure and temperature dropped to atmospheric and to the contact with atmospheric oxygen at the surface.

Phenol was discovered in coal tar by Runge (1)1/ in 1834 and was isolated (2) in 1841 as pure phenol by distilling the tar, extracting with caustic soda, acidifying the extract, and fractionating the tar acids. Later, o-cresol was isolated (3) through careful fractional distillation of the tar-acid mixture. The m-and p-cresols distilled within a boiling range of about 1.50 c. and had to be separated by other means. Raschig (4) fractionated the tar-acid mixture to obtain pure o-cresol, sulfonated the mixture of m-and p-cresols, and treated the cresol-sulfonic acids with superheated steam at 1200 to 1300 c. to hydrolyze the m-cresol sulfonic acid, the p-isomer was not affected at that temperature. He also attempted to make use of the different crystallizabilities of the m-and p-cresol sulfonic acids (5). When treated with sodium bisulfate and sodium pyro-sulfate at 100° to 110° C. or with sulfuric acid (90/0) at 20° C., only the m-cresol was sulfonated (6). Hoffman-La Roche (7) treated the meta-para mixture with concentrated sulfuric acid at 40° to 100° C., when m-cresol and part of the p-cresol was sulfonated, and precipitated the m-cresol sulfonic add by diluting with water. The same sort of separation may be carried out by means of 80 percent sulfuric acid at 35° C. and 35 mm pressure (8).
