Cleaning and handling of fine coal are generally conceded to be more difficult problems than preparation of the coarser sizes. Increased mechanization in the coal-mining industry has, in general, resulted in an increased percentage of the fine sizes in the total coal mined. If the coal fines are cleaned by wet methods, the minus-1/16-inch square-mesh particles cause most of the sludge and slurry problems encountered in preparing wet coal. Equipment that separates coal from refuse on the basis of specific gravity is not efficient on sizes that, because of their fineness, do not follow the same laws of hindered settling as the larger particles. Probably the best solution of fine-coal cleaning problems is to use other methods, such as flotation, that utilize other physical characteristics than those determining hindered-settling ratios. Regarding the type of flotation known as the Elmore vacuum-flotation process there has been a scarcity of data and information available in this country. An investigation has therefore been made to obtain additional date and information on this process under laboratory conditions. During this investigation an effort has been made to evaluate the relative efficiencies of vacuum and mechanical laboratory froth flotation cells. The investigation included float-and-sink, screen-sizing, and flotation tests on 2 different samples of 14-mesh to 0 raw coal and an a sample of slurry from the settling-tank overflow of a typical washer. One raw-coal sample was obtained from the American bed and represented a type of coal that is relatively easy to clean. The other raw-coal sample was from the Mary lee bed and represented a type considered difficult to clean.

The operation of electric face equipment in underground coal mines has proven to be extremely hazardous to mining personnel, including equipment operators and others working in the vicinity of active equipment. Recent industrial engineering studies* of accidents and fatalities indicate that a major contributor to this hazardous situation is noncompliance with modern principles of human engineering, particularly lack of standardization of control configurations. Control configurations differ not only among different machine types, but also among the same machine types produced by different manufacturers. This lack of standardization can produce a high incidence of error in the operation of electric face equipment, thus creating a potential source of accidents. Other examples of non-compliance with human engineering principles are the widespread use of identical black, round control knobs (regardless of the function being performed), and the inappropriate location, spacing, and labeling of controls. Any or all of these factors may place the operator in a "negative transfer" situation, which means that control manipulations appropriate for one type of machine are different from (or even the reverse of) the control movements required to produce the same effect on other machine types. This situation increases the accident potential to the operator, as well as to others in the vicinity. Accident potential is further increased by circumstances which do not allow for large error tolerance-specifically, emergency procedures. Reports of accident statistics cite operator inexperience as a primary cause of most accidents involving underground electric face equipment. Several factors contribute to operator inexperience, including: 1. High personnel turnover 2. Employee absenteeism 3. Current union practice of bidding for jobs.

"INTRODUCTION The construction of frame houses (fig. 1) in recent years instead of the conventional sod hut (igloo) (fig. 2) by the Eskimos in the villages along the Arctic Ocean has increased the demand for fuel in these villages. The frame houses, which are not insulated against extreme cold and are difficult to heat, are equipped with Goal stoves. The well-insulated sod huts were heated comfortably with whale-oil stoves. In some years whaling is Door, consequently there is a demand for solid fuel.The Eskimo villages usually are on the sand spits at the mouths of rivers and points of land near the best fishing and hunting grounds. These narrow necks of land usually are sand bars that are not underlain with coal, and coal must be transported to the villages. Lack of development of coal deposits in the Arctic has made it necessary to import coal from the States, generally from 'Washington, to supply these villages. This coal is imported by boat and is received once a year. Its cost is, high, and development of coal deposits in the Arctic to supply these native villages should result in a considerable saving to the Government-operated schools and hospitals as well as to the natives.Early traders attempted to establish coaling stations in the Arctic, and the Eskimos generally know where the coal deposits are situated. A. reconnaissance of a number of deposits in the Arctic was made in the summer of 1946 by engineers of the Coal Division, Fuels and Explosives Branch, Bureau of Mines, and this report describes the areas investigated and suggests plans for the development of some of these deposits."

"Respirable-sized quartz, a well-established fibrogenic mineral dust, is compared with kaolin in erythrocyte hemolysis assays aher treatment with saline dispersion of dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine, a primary phospholipid component of pulmonary surfactant. Both dusts are rendered inactive after treatment, but the membranolytic activity is partly to fully restored aher treatment with phospholipase Ai. an enzyme normally associated with cellular plasma membranes and lysosomes. Phospholipid-coated dusts were incubated for periods of 2-72 h at a series of applied enzyme concentrations, and the adsorbed lipid species and hemolytic activity were quantitated at each time for both dusts. Surfactant was lost more readily from quartz than from kaolin, with consequent more rapid restoration of mineral surface hemolytic activity for quartz. Interactions of surfactant and mineral surface functional groups responsible for the mineral-specific rate differences, and implications for determining the mineral surface bioavailability of silica and silicate dusts, are discussed. INTRODUCTIONMineral particles depositing in the lung acinus will contact an aqueous coating containing surfactant molecules spread on the air-liquid interface and dispersed within this hypophase; the primary components of that surfactant are diacyl lecithin phospholipids (King and Clements, 1972; King, 1982). Adsorption of this surfactant can suppress the cytotoxicity of mineral dusts (Marks, 1957). Suppression of hemolytic activity, a measure of membranolytic potential and an indicator of bioavailability of the mineral surface, of respirable-sized quartz and kaolin clay dusts with the adsorption of dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine or dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL) has been measured (Wallace et al., 1985). Such contact and adsorption of pulmonary surfactant in vivo may provide a first defense system of the lung against respired dusts."

"The Bureau of Mines conducted research on the flocculation of various minerals with insoluble cross-linked starch xanthate (ISX) to determine its potential as a beneficiation technique for low-grade, highly disseminated ores and for selective desliming. Covellite, chalcocite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, bornite, sphalerite, galena, and molybdenite fines flocculate with ISX. Floc formation, floc size, and settling rate are dependent on pH, with the pH dependence differing for each mineral. Quartz is not flocculated by ISX. Experiments to obtain selective flocculation of sulfides from quartz were attempted. Good selectivity was only obtained for the bornite-quartz system. Post flocculation separations resulted in flocculated bornite in grades as high as 92 pct. Evidence is presented that the flocculation of many of the sulfide minerals with ISX may involve covalent bonding of the xanthate group to lattice metal site(s). INTRODUCTIONBecause of the increasing interest in selective flocculation as a beneficiation technique for low-grade, highly disseminated ores and for selective desliming, the Bureau of Mines has been investigating the flocculation behavior of several cross-linked starch derivatives containing chelating groups. This report dis cusses the flocculation of sulfide mineral fines by insoluble cross-linked starch xanthate (ISX).Polymeric materials such as ISX, which contain a chelating group of known re¬activity towards specific mineral surfaces, were first proposed by Slater, Clark, and Kitchener (1), 3 Kitchener (2), and Attia and Kitchener (3) as selective flocculants for mineral fines with particle aggregation possible through a bridging mechanism. "INTRODUCTION During the past few years, the development of millisecond-delay electric blasting caps has made possible a more flexible control over timing the firing of individual charges in blasting, The use of these caps has proved especially productive in quarry blasting and in numerous construction operations, but their use in underground mining is developing more slowly, although in some cases, as the solution to a difficult breaking problem, they have been well-received. When used in metal-mine drifts, the general objection is that the broken rock is thrown too far. In nearly all cases, however, use of millisecond-delay caps results in better fragmentation of the rock and a lower powder consumption per ton of rock broken.Prom 1949 to 1952, several series of experiments were conducted at the Mount Weather, Va., Experimental mine in conjunction with driving a 6- by 10-toot ventilation raise. 3/4/ The raise-round experiments in this 238-foot shaft, using millisecond-delay electric blasting caps in various drill-round patterns, are the subject of this report.SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONSAll rounds discussed in this report were drilled in the hard rock (epidosite and greenstone) of the ventilation raise at Mount Weather Experimental mine (figs. 1 and 2). The drill-round patterns varied from 28- to 32 holes and from a V-cut design to one having no cut boles at all. With the exception of the first two rounds, all blasting was done with millisecond-delay electric blasting caps. In all rounds 60-percent ammonia gelatin dynamite was used and holes were stemmed with two cartridges of sand stemming."

A series of controlled experiments was conducted at four surface coal mines to study the effects of certain blast parameters upon the ground and air vibration. Preliminary scale-model blasts were conducted at a quarry to provide basic data. It was found that the amplitudes of the ground and air vibration were controlled by the maximum explosive weight per delay. Either cube root or square root scaling could be used for the seismic amplitudes, and cube root scaling could be used for the overpressure amplitudes. Both amplitudes were not significantly affected by the total charge weight per blast, the attitude of the boreholes, or the charge length or diameter. The overpressure amplitudes were affected by the charge depth, the use of cover over surface detonating cord, and the use of adequate stemming. The length of the delay intervals and the spacing of holes were important in determining the potential for reinforcement of the amplitudes in certain directions from the blasts. In downwind directions from the blast, the attenuation of the overpressure with distance decreases. Surface terrain did not significantly affect the overpressure amplitudes within the range investigated. The type of overburden affects the generation of both amplitudes and the propagation of the seismic amplitudes. Spectral analysis of the ground and air vibration is reported. A scaled distance of 300 ft/lb1/3 should produce a peak particle velocity of less than 1 ips and an overpressure of less than 128 dB linear peak. For square root scaling, a scaled distance of 75 ft/ lbl/2 should limit the ground vibration to less than 1 ips.

In 1992, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 19,200-hectare Garfield Mountain study area in east central Idaho. The area had been proposed for Wilderness. Cretaceous-age quartzite and limestone conglomerates underlie the area's east half; thick travertine beds, as well as limestones, dolomites, sandstones, and volcanic tuffs occupy the west half. All the rocks have been faulted and folded as part of the Western Overthrust Belt. Two, enormous travertine deposits occur in the west end of the study area. The lower deposit, controlled by Faxe Kalk Inc., has at least 200 million m3 (cubic meters) of travertine resources. Most of their deposit is very bright with a high CaC03 content and a low insoluble residual percentage: thus it is suitable for use as a paper and paint filler. The upper deposit, owned by Idaho Travertine Corp., contains 100 million m3 of travertine resources; it is used for facing or dimension stone. Weathered travertine outcrops are buff to tan and locally vuggy. Bureau of Mines samples of' outcrops contained greater than 95% CaC03. Approximately 600 m3 of travertine have been quarried from the two deposits and used for facing stone. Four travertine quarries and two dozer cuts were examined. Faxe Kalk has 103 White Rock placer claims on the lower deposit; approximately one-half of the claims are within the study area. Idaho Travertine has the Limestone 1 and 2 placer claims on the upper deposit. A 4,647-m-deep oil and gas exploratory well was drilled on the east end of the study area without success.

This section of Minerals and Materials analyzes the following three factors affecting the recent performance of the U.S. and world mineral industries: 1) the health of the U.S. and world economies, 2) the level of interest rates and 3) the performance of productivity in both the U.S. mineral industry and the general economy. While these indicators do not exhaust the possible critical factors, they represent an initial attempt to probe some of the considerations underlying the performance of the U.S. minerals and materials industry. The U.S. and World Economies It is essential to analyze the state of the U.S. and world economy because the demand for minerals and materials is a derived demand; that is, since minerals and materials are used in the productive process, the demand for them is a direct function of the demand for the finished products of which they are a basic input. Thus, the demand for minerals and materials is directly affected by changes in present and planned consumption and investment expenditures. The past two issues of this publication have highlighted the generally discouraging performance of the national and inter-national economies. Briefly, the world economy is in the third year of the first long recession in recent history where inflation rates have remained above 5 percent. With many countries either unable or unwilling to support domestic spending while inflation continues, there has been a growing tendency to institute trade-restrictive policies to support domestic demand. The resulting weakened demand conditions in exporting nations have had a direct effect on the mineral industry.

A computer model of an existing mine ventilation system can be executed using data developed from ventilation survey results. This model can then be used to analyze and evaluate proposed modifications to the system. The acquisition of field measurements during a ventilation survey and the corresponding development of this information into computer input data have been discussed in detail in the preceding chapters. In this chapter, the data are used in computer-oriented analysis of the mine ventilation system. The PSU/MVS was selected for use because of its advanced capabilities. MINE DESCRIPTION The mine chosen for this application is located in Western Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh coal seam, having an average height of 5-1/4 to 6-1/2 ft, is mined under approximately 300 to 500 ft of cover. The mine preparation plant and shipping facilities are located at the seam outcrop along a river; mining has progressed from the outcrop to an area about 10 miles from the pit mouth so that there are extensive worked-out areas through which access is maintained to the current mining area. Coal haulage is by conveyor to an underground transfer point, located four miles from the pit mouth, and then by high speed rail haulage to the preparation plant. The rail haulage link is scheduled for replacement by a conveyor in the near future. Mining at the present time is limited to the room and pillar method using continuous miners. Longwall mining had been attempted in the past with only limited success; as a result, several panels originally laid out for longwall mining are currently being extracted by room and pillar work. "The size of off-highway trucks has increased substantially over the last decade, bringing about a radical change in truck maintenance practices and procedures. As a result, surface mine maintenance mechanics today are faced with the increased hazards of working with larger and heavier tools and components and doing repairs at greater heights, thereby exposing them to a high potential for serious injury or death. Not surprisingly, the number of accidents involving truck maintenance mechanics is significantly increasing.The Bureau of Mines has assessed the haulage truck maintenance safety problem, analyzing maintenance-accident data over the 7-yr period, 1978- 84, in terms of personnel, job activities, truck components and systems, tools involved, and truck design. This assessment, based on the review and interpretation of 1,225 haulage truck maintenance accident reports, identified major factors contributing to these accidents. Overall, young, inexperienced workers are involved in most accidents. A typical maintenance accident involves a male mechanic under 33 yr old, with less than 5 yr job experience. INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, surface mine maintenance and repair operations have changed radically. The number of maintenance personnel has grown along with the hazards of working with larger and heavier components at greater heights and with larger and heavier tools. Furthermore, transfer of skills from over-the-road vehicle mechanics is not as feasible as it once was, because of the ever increasing size of mining equipment and the complexity of its design. In short, surf ace mine equipment maintenance and repair has become increasingly sophisticated as well as labor intensive, necessitating further research and evaluation in terms of both safety and efficiency (1, 7-8) 2"

The use of sulfur combined with either sand or waste copper tailings was investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a substitute for a good graded aggregate in asphalt paving materials. The research was part of a utilization program to develop meaningful uses for a projected oversupply of sulfur. Many sections of the country lack good aggregate for paving but do have available sources of sands and sulfur. The development of paving mixtures of desert sands or tailings with sulfur and asphalt was accomplished in the laboratory and tested by laying small paving test sections. Three types of material were studied for use with the sulfur and asphalt. They were (1) a concrete sand similar in gradation to river or beach sands, (2) desert blow sand, and (3) waste copper tailings. Desert blow sand and waste copper tailings are much finer than concrete sand. Mix designs were established for the three types of materials, sulfur, and asphalt used in the paving materials. The best mix designs were as follows, in weight-percent: 80.5 concrete sand, 13.5 sulfur, and 6 asphalt; and 77 either blow sand or tailings, 17 sulfur, and 6 asphalt. Small-scale testing showed that these mixtures were suitable paving materials but would require specialized equipment for transporting and laying. The chemical modification of sulfur to obtain properties that would allow placement of these materials with normal asphalt paving equipment was studied. Results indicate that reacting sulfur with dicyclopentadiene before adding it to the paving mixture was effective in modifying the sand-sulfur-asphalt paving so it could be placed and rolled with conventional equipment.

A flat slot is created in rock to cause stress relief effects in a pair of hydraulic borehole pressure cells (previously installed in drill holes above and below the slot ) , which act as sensing devices . This relief is annulled by repressuring the slot by means of a flat hydraulic cell . The slot pressure at annulment is taken to be the existing ground stress at right angles to the plane of the slot . A number of trial installations in the rib of a mine drift showed that for a valid determination of ground stress the sensing devices that respond to relief and repressuring must be within a specified zone close to the pressure transmitter ; otherwise the indicated ground stress may be excessive . By using an additional pair of borehole pressure cells , installed a few feet away , the existing rock stress can be redetermined at intervals , irrespective of a change of stress intensity subsequent to the initial installation . Based on these findings , equipment and procedures have been developed that make possible the installation and operation of a permanent rock stress monitoring station for observing mining - induced stress changes . The station consists of a 12 - in - wide hydraulic pressure cell cemented in a flat slot and four 2- by 8 - in flat hydraulic pressure cells in nearby drill holes . All drilling for the installation can be done with an air leg drill and conventional bits . Once the installation is completed , all required information is obtained by Bourdon pressure gage readings . The apparatus is simple , relatively inexpensive , and reliable under operating conditions in a wet mine . Unlike most methods of rock stress determination , this scheme permits periodic remeasurement of absolute rock pressure over several years , without additional drilling or instrumentation . The petroleum industry continued to be the most important mineral activity in Bahrain during 1978-79. Revenues generated by the petroleum sector increased from $378 million' in 1977 to an estimated $419 million in 1978 and approximately $522.5 million in 1979, despite decreasing production over the 2 year period. There were two oilfields that produced revenues for Bahrain, the Awali oilfield, the nation's only onshore producer, and the Abu Sa'fah oilfield, located in the Persian Gulf, north of Bahrain, The Await oilfield has been decreasing output from a high of 27,973,000 barrels in 1970 to 19,000,000 barrels in 1979. Bahrain shared the revenues from the Abu Sa'fah oilfield with Saudi Arabia, as settlement of an ownership dispute. For the first time, in 1978, revenues from the Abu Sa'fah oilfield represented over 50% of the total receipts from the petroleum sector. The years 1978-79 saw the gradual takeover of the Bahrain Petroleum Co. (Bapco), formerly a subsidiary of the California Texas Petroleum Co. (Caltex), by the Government-owned Bahrain National Oil Co. (Banoco). By yearend 1978, Banoco owned 60% of Bapco, and Caltex the remaining 40%. The Government-owned company controlled exploration concessions, managed domestic marketing of petroleum products, and controlled natural gas production and marketing. On December 15, 1979, the Bahrain Government completed full takeover of the Bapco operations. Bapco will continue to own and operate the 250,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery located near Sitrah, as well as handle foreign marketing of petroleum products.

This report includes a review of all relevant data on underground hydraulic coal mining technology collected during Phases I and II of the contract. Data collection and analysis procedures are discussed. Information is included on past and existing underground hydraulic coal nines in the USSR (27 mines), Poland (1 mina), Germany (1 mine), Japan (1 mine), Canada (1 mine), China (1 nine), as well as underground tests conducted in the United Kingdom (2 mines), and in the United States (5 mines). Data is also included on Czechoslovakia and New Zealand. In all operational hydraulic mines, coal is transported underground in flumes. In most cases, bituminous coal is broken by monitors with nozzle diameters larger than 16 mm (0.63 in.) and jet pressures of 50 to 125 atm (710 to 1780 psi). Technical design and performance data are included on all key types of equipment and components which have been developed for, used in, or which could be potentially be used in hydraulic coal mining systems. Data sheets are presented on 180 types of equipment, divided into 24 major categories. Where available, sketches, drawings, photographs, and price estimates are included. Data are included on pitching coal seams in the United States which potentially can be mined by hydraulic methods. Preliminary conclusions are presented, subject to revision as a result of economic feasibility studies to be completed during Phase III. An outline is presented of the final report, which will include economic studies and recommendations for research and development.

A list of permissible mine equipment approved by the Bureau of Mines before January 1, 1937, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6942.3/ Information Circular 7007,4/ published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved. Burin', the calendar year 1937. The present list includes most of the material liven in these two publications, as well as approvals that have been issued up to January l, 1940. Some equipment formerly listed has been omitted because it has become obsolete or is no longer actively marketed. The list now includes electrically-operated air compressors, coal drills, loading machines and conveyors, mining machine, mine ones, rock-dusting machines, room hoists, storage-battery gathering and haulage locomotives and storage-battery power trucks, mine telephones, junction boxes, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, electric flood lens, flashlights, methane detectors, and single and multiple-shot blasting units. The appendix at the end of this circular lists trailing, cables that have passed tests prescribed by Schedule 2D. When equipment passes the inspections and tests prescribed by the United Status Department of the interior, Bureau of Mines, in published "schedules" or standards, it is formally approved as "permissible" for use in gassy mines, and the manufacturer is then permitted to mark it with an approval plate that identifies it as having been approved by the Bureau. The inspections and tests are designed to insure that each equipment satisfies the minimum requirements for safety in use. Available statistics show that the demands of the American chemical industry for sodium sulphate have been increasing slightly in recent years. The supply from domestic sources, particularly in the form of byproduct salt cake from the acid manufacturers, has been tending to decrease this to the growing manufacture of synthetic acid. Both hydrochloric and nitric acids are being synthesized from their elements. The natural result has been that a smaller amount of salt cake is available. Simultaneously, the expansion of the kraft-paper industry, especially in the South, has brought about greater demand for sodium sulphate in that section. This demand is being met by domestic byproduct salt cake, by imported German sodium sulphate made from potash waste liquors, and by favorably situated domestic deposits of Glauber salts and the anhydrous salt, thenardite. No shortage of natural sodium sulphate exists in the United States, but usually such deposits occur in semiarid regions far removed from transportation facilities and from markets. Moreover, the major portion of the natural deposits is Glauber salt or mirabilite (Na2 504 • 10H20), which must be dried or dehydrated in order to meet consumer requirements. The water of hydration represents, roughly, 55 percent of the total weight of the crude salts and therefore has a very important influence on transportation costs, in many instances the cost of getting even the dehydrated product to market is the deciding economic factor. Therefore, the recovery of production of anhydrous sodium sulphate from plant-waste liquors or from natural brines of suitable composition might be economically feasible.

"INTRODUCTION The orienting phases of the current investigation of cushioned blasting in the Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines were indicated in a previous publication (5) 3/. Pertinent literature reviewed therein indicated a highly controversial field. This emphasized the need for experimental studies of many factors that affect the health and safety of miners and the efficiency of mining operations. Results of some orienting tests showed marked effects on practical hazards. Further, they emphasized the necessity and importance of the contemplated investigation. The scope and general plan of these practical inquiries into the safety of cushioned blasting were indicated.This investigation of cushioned blasting relates to the various means employed to reduce the intensity of application of energy from explosive actions in boreholes. It has been suggested (from p. 19 of reference that the divisions of this work would correspond to the salient hazards affected by cushioned blasting. These include the ignition hazard, hazards from poisonous gases, and other practical hazards in the blasting technique. The ignition hazard was resolved into two components of approximately equal weight. These include studies of effects upon (1) the incendivity of blown-out shots and upon (2) the occurrence of such shots. Experimental studies of effects on the incendivity of blown-out shots were first undertaken. Questions of the best procedure for making these evaluations have been adduced, and the interpre-tation and utilization of the results of gallery testing seemed to require detailed attention; some preliminary general considerations of such testing were therefore necessary."
