Gasoline and other liquid fuels may be obtained from coal by direct and indirect hydrogenation.3/ The direct process, usually termed the coal-hydro-genation or the Bergius process, was patented in Germany by F. Bergius in 1914 and developed to a commercial stage by the inventor and I. G. Farben-industrie. From a chemical point of view, the coal-hydrogenation process consists of adding hydrogen to the complex coal molecules and removing oxygen so that its chemical constitution is changed to that of petroleum, whereupon the coal substance liquefies, yielding an aromatic crude oil. In the indirect-hydrogenation process, known as the Fischer-Tropsch process (invented by Franz Fischer and Hans Tropsch in Germany), coal, lignite, or natural gas is first converted to water gas, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. This mixture of gases, in proper proportion and after suitable purification, is then passed over a solid catalyst at relatively low pressures (1 to 20 atmospheres) and temperatures ranging from 180° to 260° C. The products obtained are gasoline, Diesel oil, liquefiable gases, and paraffin wax.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines study comparing the construction costs, leakage measurements, and predicted performance of different types of large stoppings built and tested in a room-and-pillar oil-shale mine. The six full-sized structures (30 ft high by 55 ft wide) included both permanent and temporary stoppings and were fabricated using materials ranging from structural steel to coated brattice cloth. Leakage across each stopping was measured at differential pressures ranging up to 1.0 in w.g., using both the brattice window method and sulfur hexa-fluoride (SF6) tracer gas. Blast air pressures resulting from a full-scale face blast of approximately 1,800 lb of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosives were measured across two of the stoppings and the pre-and post-leakage rates were compared for all the stoppings. Overall performance of the stoppings for production applications was evaluated using an operational model of a two-panel oil-shale mine. Different combinations of temporary and permanent stoppings were evaluated based upon ventilation performance and construction and operating costs.

The vapor pressures of tungsten (VI ) chloride ( WC1 ) and hafnium ( IV ) iodide ( HFI ) were measured by a metal diaphragm technique . Vapor pressure values were obtained to permit calculation of the thermodynamic properties of the vaporization processes of the compounds . Moderate to acute deficiency of plant available phosphorus is very common in western coal mine spoils and topsoils. Although some of the spoils are known to contain seemingly adequate amounts of total phosphorus, the plant available phosphorus is so low that it constitutes a serious plant growth limiting factor in the mined lands. For the revegetation of these spoils, the use of species, varieties and ecotypes exhibiting greater efficiency for P uptake and utilization, or conversely, lesser susceptibility to P deficiency would be highly desirable. To identify such plants, quick and adequate methods of screening germplasm should he available. In the present growth chamber study several plant species were screened using continuous flow culture and spoil culture systems to provide information on their relative susceptibility. In flow cultures, P was maintained at 0.25, 2.5, and 25 moles; while in spoil cultures it was applied at 0, 25, and 75µg/g to a P-deficient spoil. Phosphorus deficiency symptoms appeared in alfalfa cultivars, birdsfoot trefoil, emerald crownvetch and yellow sweetclover within 7-10 days upon transfer of their seedlings to U.25 or 2.5 µM P solutions. Burning bush and Russian thistle, found abundantly as pioneering species on mine spoils, showed no deficiency symptoms; their shoot dry matter yield in the 0.25µM P treatment was 24% and 36%, respectively of their maximum yield obtained with 25 µM P. However, the percent increase in the dry matter yield of legumes with 0.25 µM P ranged from 7-13% over their maximum yield. With the increase in solution P concentration, the root dry weight ratio in the legumes increased from an average of 0.22 to 0.43, while in the weeds from 0.14 to 0.30. The low susceptibility of Russian thistle to P deficiency was also demonstrated in the spoil culture experiment. Legumes showed greater response to P-fertilization on the spoil than did the two weeds. With increasing concentrations of P in the solution, the root weight ratio of all the species decreased. At 25 µM P, weeds invested only 14% of their total dry matter yield in the root fraction, where as legumes and grasses invested as much as 24% and 33% respectively. Weedy species averaged higher P concentrations than the legumes and grasses. The mean P concentrations of alfalfa cultivars were the lowest among legumes. In general, P concentrations increased with the increase in P supply. In the flow culture system, P supply increased the Ca levels of legumes. The mean Mn concentrations were highest in the weedy species. The increases in P supply decreased Zn levels in all of the species. File effects of P fertilization on the tissue concentrations of Mn and Zn in spoil culture were similar to that of flow culture system. From this preliminary study, it may be concluded that the continuous flow culture system is efficient in rapid screening of a large number of species under controlled conditions for their efficiency in adapting to mineral stresses.

Thirty mines and prospects were studied; 22 are within the Dolus Lakes RARE II area. Three properties within the area and one adjacent to it were determined to have indicated or inferred gold, silver, or molybdenum resources (fig. 1 and table 1) associated with quartz veins and shear zones or quartz-pyrite stockworks in granodiorite. Five other properties in the area and three just outside have potential for the discovery of gold and silver resources. Minor amounts of very fine-grained placer gold are in glacial outwash in and near the area. The John G. Carlisle Mine (fig. 1, no. 9) produced 120 oz (3.7 kg) of gold between 1897-1899. The Independence Mine produced 481 oz (15 kg) gold, 197 oz (6.1 kg) silver, and 189 lb (86 kg) of copper between 1926 and 1935. These mines are adjacent to the study area's northern boundary.

Recent studies suggest that trace metals emitted by internal combustion engines are derived mainly from combustion of lubrication oil. This hypothesis was examined by investigation of the formation of particulate matter emitted from an internal combustion engine in the absence of fuel-derived soot. Emissions from a modified CAT 3304 diesel engine fueled with hydrogen gas were characterized. The role of organic carbon and metals from lubrication oil on particle formation was investigated under selected engine conditions. The engine produced exhaust aerosol with log normal-size distributions and particle concentrations between 105 and 101 cm-3 with geometric mean diameters from 18 to 31 nm. The particles contained organic carbon, little or no elemental carbon, and a much larger percentage of metals than particles from diesel engines. The maximum total carbon emission rate was estimated at 1.08 g h-1, which is much lower than the emission rate of the original diesel engine. There was also evidence that less volatile elements, such as iron, self-nucleated to form nanoparticles, some of which survive the coagulation process.

The deposits had been examined by A. B. Needham, district engineer of the Bureau, in November 1942. A review of development and a reevaluation of uses of the hydraulic air compressor are suggested by the constant changes in technology, which frequently make an old art valuable in solving current problems. Contacts with research workers in various branches of engineering indicate that this older method of producing compressed air may not be familiar to some or that its salient features might be useful in solving problems involving uses of compressed air. Briefly, a hydraulic air compressor may be described as an inverted siphon, consisting of an intake head where water and air are mingled, followed by a gravity-fall tube in which air is intimately mixed with the water and is compressed as the water pressure increases during the fall down the tube, then a separating, or stilling, chamber in which air bubbles rise to the surface of the water and collect in the upper portion of the chamber at a pressure equal to the weterhead maintained by the height of water in the discharge leg of the circuit. The water, which now contains only the fraction of air that has gone into solution, passes out of the separating chamber and rises up the discharge leg to the surface, which is, of course, at some suitable distance below the level of the intake. Present-day applications include (1) utilizing low hydraulic heads, which otherwise have little commercial values; (2) utilizing low hydraulic heads in reclamation work to supply compressed air, or in some instances to produce a small suction, for air-lift pumping (or for operation of air motors), with minimum attendance and without need for electric power; (3) utilizing medium heads, as at dam and lock installations, to produce compressed air for pneumatic operation of airlifts, gates, valves, and rubber gate seals; (4) utilizing underground waters, as in mines, to produce compressed air for general mine use; (5) using this method of isothermal compression of air in combination with standard compressors wherever hydraulic head is available, thereby securing the advantages of low-temperature intake to the mechanical compressors and reduction of moisture content below that of atmospheric air; (6) development of large air supply at pressures up to 150 p.s.i.g., which, after performing work in reciprocating or centrifugal expansion cylinders, is available at temperatures approximating -50° F. Possibilities in freezing and reheating should be mentioned which may prove economical for obtaining uniformly dry air for process work, wind-tunnel tests, or large air-conditioning installations, such as ventilation of underwater traffic tunnels, and may be economic for supply of supercharged air to gas-turbine plants.

"INTRODUCTION This is the third report of investigations by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with industry to establish the value of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of ferrous and nonferrous alloys. The manganese was produced by the Bureau at its Boulder City pilot plant from domestic ores and by the process developed by it. 4/ The work was done under the direction of R.S. Dean, assistant director, Bureau of Mines, and R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, metallurgical branch. The first report dealt with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steels 5/ and the second with its use in acid electric or open-hearth low- and medium-carbon steel castings. 6/The present report treats of the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of low—carbon rimmed and killed steels. A résumé of these three investigations and two others appeared in the magazine STEEL. 7/ Further reports will be published as tests are completed at some 70 industrial plants. All tests were made on full—scale heats or melts, and the resultant product was processed and used commercially."

Few elements have received more attention and developed greater interest in the last ten years than titanium. The substantially pure metal has been din...ie. cult to isolate, and so far has been little employed oommercially, but the use af alloys and chemical compounds of titanium has increased markedly in recent years. The earlier attempts at preparing pure titanium resulted in various impure forme which, from their metallic appearance, were always mistaken for the metal. Hunter in 1910 isolated pure titanium by the reduction of titanium tetrachloride with sodium. This brief statement is issued by the Bureau of Mines in response to numerous inquiries which have been received concerning titanium. More complete in. formation on the metal may be had by consulting the referenpes appended. The Literature is voluminous and only the more important references are Riven. It has been drawn upon freely in preparing this report; also information was supplied by M. g. Hunter, Arthur Braid, M 1. Schmid, C. M. Johnson, N. B. Hoffman, and de Courny Browne. The pioneer investigator in titanium is A. IL Rossi.

The production of bituminous coal by stripping methods has become an important factor in some areas, especially in the Central and South Central States. In the latter, production at strip mines exceeds that at deep mines. VANADIUM was discovered in 1801 by Andres Manuel del Rio, a professor of mineralogy at the School of Mines in Mexico City. Del Rio called the new element erythronium. Later, he decided that this was not a new element but a form of chromium. Not until 1831 did Nils G. Sefström, a Swedish chemist, positively determine that the metal was a new element which he named vanadium, after Vanadis, the Scandanavian goddess of beauty. From 1831 to the 1860&apos;s and 1870&apos;s, the comparative scarcity and high cost of vanadium restricted its commercial use. Shortly after 1870, more information was obtained on the physical and chemical properties of the element. Thereafter, research on vanadium has dealt largely with its use as an alloying element in steel and nonferrous metals. Vanadium is a widely distributed element in the earth&apos;s crust. It is more abundant than many metals but is disseminated in small quantities throughout a great variety of rocks. Relatively few deposits have contained ore of a grade suitable to warrant development for vanadium alone. It is produced in conjunction with uranium, iron, titanium, aluminum, and lead-zinc ores.

External control of the electrochemical potential of a bed of mineral particles has been investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a method for controlling particle inter-action with organic collectors and thus, flotation response. A cylindrically shaped, 200-to 300-g bed of sulfide mineral particles was used as the working electrode to examine the potential distribution in the bed. The dissolved oxygen concentration of the electrolyte had a significant effect on the potential profile across the mineral bed. Low oxygen levels were necessary to achieve uniform electrochemical potential distributions. Flotation separation of a chalcocite-pyrite mineral mixture by controlled potential was achieved using ethylxanthate, but the flotation behavior of chalcocite and pyrite from the mixture does not follow the flotation behavior of the individual minerals. That is, the presence of another sulfide mineral alters the flotation behavior with ethylxan-thate. Galvanic interaction due to mineral-to-mineral contact between chalcocite and pyrite contributes to differences in the recovery. Chalcocite dissolution products had a deleterious effect on pyrite flotation by activating flotation below -0.1 V (saturated calomel electrode) and depressing flotation above -0.1 V. Pyrite dissolution products had no effect on chalcocite flotation.

"INTRODUCTION This report describes an exploratory project conducted by the Bureaus of Mines on a fluorite deposit, near Glenwood, N. Mex. Results of wagon drilling, crosscutting, and test pitting are given, together with results of metallurgical tests made upon samples of the ore. Mining and treatment methods are suggested.C. H. Johnson, Bureau of Mines engineer, examined the deposit in August 1942. H. E. Rothrock, of the Federal Geological Survey, completed a preliminary geologic study and mapped the deposit during the fall of 1942. As a result of these brief investigations, it was concluded that the deposit contained substantial inferred ore reserves, and exploratory work was recommended. G. A. ApelI, also of the Bureau of Mines, made a topographic and underground survey and report on the mine in March and April 1944. A wagon drill, air compressor, and other equipment and supplies were delivered to the property on May 19 to 23, 1944. Drilling began under the direction of the author on May 25, 1944, and was completed in October 1944. The results of drilling and. sampling form the basis of this report."

Design a model health and safety program which, when implemented, can improve mine safety by reducing occupational injuries and accidents. Approach The Bureau of Mines developed a model program which identifies the elements essential to the effectiveness of health and safety programs designed for mining operations, and is readily adaptable to all types of sizes of mines. The model program primarily provides training on loss control and accident investigation and technical assistance with health and safety problems. In order to assess the effectiveness of the program, it was tested at both a coal and gold mining operation. Monthly statistics were generated to reflect the number of occupational injuries and accidents, and the severity of injuries (as measured by the number of work days lost during recovery). Observations were made of employees performing a large number of randomly selected jobs in order to estimate. the proportion of the workforce that was working in the presence of one or more of three types of safety deficiencies: Type A-individual job performance deficiencies which could be corrected by the employee alone I e.g., an employee is seen not wearing a seatbelt.
