"I. IntroductionThe alveolar surface of the lung is covered by two populations of pneumocytes, type I and type II epithelium. The type I cell, which accounts for most of the alveolar surface area and provides a highly specialized barrier for gas exchange (Rannels et al., 1991), is poorly understood. Although approaches to type I cell purification have been discussed, they have not been applied widely because of the lack of phenotypic markers to monitor isolation procedures (Dobbs et al., 1988; Danto et al., 1992). In contrast, the type II cell has been studied extensively, largely because of the development of reliable procedures for its isolation and primary culture. Investigations based on the use of purified populations of cultured type II cells have provided convincing evidence to support a role for the pneumocytes both in the maintenance of normal lung function and in the response of the lung to injury (for review, see Rannels and Rannels, 1989).While type II cells can be isolated by a variety of approaches, the protocols used most commonly are modifications of the gradient method of Dobbs and Mason (1979) or of the panning method of Dobbs et al. (1986). Purification of the cells based on density gradient centrifugation is reliable and consistent, with yields of 30 to 40 X 106 type II cells per rat of 230 g body weight. Isolation procedures applied to a minimum of three to four rats provide the best results, as lower cell yields are common with the use of fewer animals. As a part of the work which the Bureau of Mines carried out in 1916 and 1917 pertaining to the compressibility of natural gas , it became necessary to de termine the pressure -volume relations of several of the paraffin hydrocarbons of which natural gas is composed . Results of the work on natural gas were published in Technical papers 131 (Burrell , G.A. , and Robertson , I.W. , The compressibility of natural gas to high pressure , Bureau of Mines Tech . Paper 131 , 1916 , 12 pp. ) and 158 (Burrell , G.A. , and Robertson , I.W. , Compressibility of natural gas and its constituents with analyses of natural gas from 31 cities in the United States , Bureau of Mines Tech . Paper 158 , 1917 , 12 pp . ) , and curves were given of pressure volume deviations of the gases , methane , ethane , propane , and carbon dioxide at high pressures . original experimental data on these gases , however , were not published . The In view of many inquiries which the Bureau has received with reference to the original data on the se gases , and the importance of the pressure -volume relations from which it is possible to calculate the deviation of any natural gas who se composition is known , the original data as determined by Burrell and Robertson are pre sented below .

1. A total of 14,413 mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Nearly half (48.9%) were sand and gravel operations, followed by stone (28.5%), coal (14.7%), nonmetal (5.7%), and metal mines (2.1%). 2. Mine operators reported 240,000 full-time equivalent workers1 (down 3.9% from 1999). Independent contractors reported 42,000 full-time equivalent workers working on mine property (up 8.6% from 1999). Coal operators accounted for 26.8% of reported employee hours, followed by stone operators (25.9%) and sand and gravel operators (12.1%). 3. Eighty-four (84) work-related mine fatalities occurred in 2000 compared to 90 the year before. •The mine fatality rate was 29.8 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers compared to a fatality rate of4.6 per 100,000 employees for all private industry. •Thirty-one percent (31%) of the fatalities occurred in underground work areas, which account for only17% of total employment. •Although the largest number of fatalities (28) occurred among miners who work for coal operators, coal contractor employees had the highest fatality rate (61.1 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers). 4.There were 10,839 nonfatal lost-time injuries reported to MSHA, occurring at a rate of 3.8 injuries per 100full-time equivalent workers, and resulting in a total of 417,918 lost workdays.2 •Among all employees,3 the highest injury rate occurred among coal operator employees (5.6 nonfatal injuries per 100 full-time equivalent workers). •The highest percentage (34.7%) of nonfatal lost-time injuries were due to handling materials (e.g., over-exertion in lifting, pulling, or pushing objects), which also accounted for the greatest percentage of lost workdays (29.3%). •Among the most frequently occurring injuries, the most severe (as measured by the median number of days lost) were associated with accidents involving falls of ground, the use of powered haulage, and slips or falls. •The most frequently reported part of the body injured was the back (22.9% of all injuries). Back injuries accounted for the highest percentage of lost workdays (21.6%). 5.Seven hundred sixty-seven (767) cases of occupational illness were reported to MSHA. •The most frequently reported illness was repetitive trauma, resulting in joint, tendon, or muscle inflammation or irritation (37.3%). •There were 155 (20.2%) illnesses reported as hearing loss. The majority (68.4%) of hearing loss cases occurred among surface workers. •Coal workers' pneumoconiosis accounted for 14.5% of reported illnesses.

"The Hog Creek mine, in lot 92 of the 17th district in Towns County, Georgia, was examined in 1890 by F. P. King, who reported the existence there of a 4-foot vein of corundum. The mine is about 2 miles west of Hiawassee, on the southern side of Ramey Mountain. Ed Burch, of Hog Creek, holds the surface rights, and the mineral rights appear to be vested in the heirs of William R. McConnell, who formerly owned and prospected the property.Examination by the Bureau of Mines showed the workings to be caved, but it was thought advisable to open the mine and uncover the reported vein. The Bureau's work consisted, of trenching and cleaning out the pits and shaft.William R. McConnell, the former owner, prospected the property in about 1890. At some tine during that operation, the prospect was visited by Francis P. Kings a geologist with the Georgia Geological Survey.3/King reported that a 4-foot vein of corundum was exposed g feet below the surface in the main cut and was opened for 20 feet along the strike. He also reported that the so-called ""Georgia rubies"" were taken from this mine.The main mine is about 2,000 feet- north of Hoc Creek on a timbered southern slope of Ramey Mountain. It lies at an altitude of about 2,100 feet, approximately 100 feet above the high-water level of the Catuga reservoir, which floods Hog Creek to a quarter of a mile above its confluence with the Hiawassee River. The nearest water is a small branch about 1,000 feet to the west.Chlorite schist is the principal host rock. It has been intruded by irregular masses of a very herd periodtite rock possibly troctolite. The schist near the surface is extremely weathered, presenting white and red laminations parallel to the schistosity. At a depth of 40 feet in the cross-cut it appears as a fine-grained green-chlorite schist. The schist strikes about N. 350 E. and dips 800 to the southeast.No corundum vein was found, and if any existed it must have been mined out after King's visit. In the pit, about 15 feet west of the shaft, approximately 150 pounds of zoisite and an occasiona1 small crystal of corundum were found imbedded in schist about 18 feet below the surface, near hard, dense troctolite."

"INTRODUCTION The purpose of this circular is to describe the sealing off of a mine fire and subsequent use of carbon dioxide gas to extinguish it.A fire of electrical origin occurred in the Valier mine of the Valier Coal Co., Valier, Franklin County, I11., on March 29, 1949, at about 1:35 p.m. It was discovered about 3:35 p.m. in 5 south west intake airway inby 1 and 2 west panels. The No. 5 southwest airway had caved, and the fire was in the top coal beneath a large fall of rock. All men, except officials, were ordered from the mine. The mine officials decided to seal the fire, and four temporary seals were erected, which isolated approximately 200 feet of 5 south west entry. The seals were completed on March 30 at 2:45 a.m., but on March 31, at 3;40 a.m,, two of them were blown out by an explosion of gas that was produced by the fire. The two seals were rebuilt, the work being completed on March 31 at 12:00 noon, but they were blown out by another gas explosion at 12:10 a.m. on April 1. It was then decided to extinguish the fire with water if possible.To accomplish this, concrete-block dams were constructed. On April 1, about 4:25 a.m., when the dams were about half completed, water was introduced into the fire area through a 2-inch pipe.On April 4, J. G, Crawford, general manager of the Valier Coal Co., notified James Westfield, chief of the Vincennes (Ind.) Branch, U. S. Bureau of Mines, by telephone of the fire in Valier mine and requested assistance to combat it. Westfield, accompanied by F. J. Smith and H. C. Brumbaugh, Federal coal-mine inspectors, went underground and inspected the seals and dams. Later, during a conference with company officials, it was decided that the concrete-block dams were not strong enough to withstand the hydrostatic pressure that would be produced by flooding the fire area. It was then decided to use carbon dioxide gas to extinguish the fire. Four seals were completed, and 5 tons of carbon dioxide gas was introduced into the fire area, which extinguished the fire."

"The fluorspar deposits in the Gallinas Mining District, Lincoln County, New Mexico, were examined early in February and again in April 1943 by the Bureau of Mines because of the possible importance of newly discovered deposits and of old mine workings showing fluorite-bearing material. There &re many of these deposits spread over a considerable area, and it appeared that exploration might indicate sufficient reserves to support a local mill that could contribute to the supply of fluorspar needed for war purposes. Accordingly, the Bureau initiated an exploratory program in June 1943, which was completed in August 1944.H. E. Rothrock, Roy Earhart, R. G. Smalley, and V. C. Kelly, geologists of the Federal Geological Survey, began mapping and studying the district in May 1943 and continued this work throughout the Bureau's exploration.David J. Stauffer, district ranger, U. S. Forest Service, and several claim owners assisted in the examinations and subsequent exploration.The fluorspar deposits in the Gallinas Mountains are reached by an unpaved forest road, which, leaves U. S. Highway 54 half a mile south of Gallinas station. The road runs due west for 3 miles, then turns due north just beyond the first cattleguard. This north branch is followed for 2 miles to a second cattleguard. There a left branch extends northwest up Red Cloud Canyon to the Red Cloud, and. All. American deposits; the right branch continues north for 2.miles past the Wade Porter ranch, to another left branch, which goes almost 2 miles west to the Hoosier Group deposits. The remaining deposits are reached by trail from either the Hoosier Group or, more easily, from the Red Cloud claim (fig. 1).The Hoosier Group is in sec. l9,, T.. 1S.,1 R. 12 E.; all of the other known ore occurrences are in secs. 13, 14, and 23 to 27, inclusive, T. IS., R. 11 E. All of the deposits are in the Lincoln National Forest and within the limits of a State game refuge. The nearest railroad loading point is Gallinas, Station on the Southern Pacific Railroad. Corona, the next station north of Gallinas, is a Mile or two farther from the deposits.Minor supplied, telegraph, telephone, freight, and express service, and limited living accommodations, Are, obtainable at Corona, 10 to 15 miles from the deposits of Carrizozo, N. Mex., 50 miles south."

A new concept was proposed for a personal warning device for use by miners who may be exposed to health hazards from inhalation of alpha-emitting radionuclides, especially radon-222 and its short-lived daughters. Two successive prototype models of the proposed instrument were designed, fabricated and tested. The Personal Alpha Alarm, in its final form, weighs less than 90 g (3 ounces), and can easily he mounted on a miner's safety cap. It is powered r, by electricity drawn from the cap-lamp battery, and consumes less than 100 n A at 4VDC. It is entirely passive and has no moving parts. Alpha-radiation originating in the air around it is detected by a 5 cm2-area semiconductor-type sensor that was developed especially for this purpose. The presence of alpharadiation in the air is communicated to the wearer by means of a small flashing light-a light-emitting diode-clipped to the brim of the safety cap. When the intensity of alpha-radiation exceeds a predetermined threshold, the flashing mode changes to a continuous illumination, thus providing an alarm signal to the wearer. Because the detector senses all alpha-emitters in the air, including 222Rn, it is not able to measure Working Levels accurately. For its intended purpose, however, which is to give a timely warning of excessive levels (several times the normal control level) of radon and/or radon daughters in an individual's air environment, the Personal Alpha Alarm is expected to be a useful instrument.

Study Design. Survival analysis techniques were used to compare the fatigue failure responses of elderly motion segments to a middle-aged sample. Objectives. To compare fatigue life of a middle-aged sample of lumbosacral motion segments to a previously tested elderly cohort. An additional objective was to evaluate the influence of bone mineral content on cycles to failure. Summary of Background Data. A previous investiga¬tion evaluated fatigue failure responses of 36 elderly lumbosacral motion segments (average age, 81 ± 8 years) subjected to spinal loads estimated when lifting a 9-kg load in 3 torso flexion angles (0°, 22.5°, and 45°). Results demonstrated rapid fatigue failure with increased torso flexion; however, a key limitation of this study was the old age of the specimens. Methods. Each lumbosacral spine was dissected into 3 motion segments (L1-L2, L3-L4, and L5-S1). Motion segments within each spine were randomly assigned to a spinal loading condition corresponding to lifting 9 kg in 3 torso flexion angles (0°, 22.5°, or 45°). Motion segments were statically loaded and allowed to creep for 15 minutes, then cyclically loaded at 0.33 Hz. Fatigue life was taken as the number of cycles to failure (10 mm displacement after creep loading). Results. Compared with the older sample of spines, the middle-aged sample exhibited increased fatigue life (cycles to failure) in all the torso flexion conditions. Increased fatigue life of the middle-aged specimens was associated with the increased bone mineral content (BMC) in younger motion segments (mean ± SD, 30.7 11.1 g per motion segment vs. 27.8 ± 9.4 g). Increasing bone mineral content had a protective influence with each additional gram increasing survival times by approximately 12%. Conclusion. Younger motion segments survive considerably longer when exposed to similar spine loading conditions that simulate repetitive lifting in neutral and flexed torso postures, primarily associated with the increased bone mineral content possessed by younger motion segments. Cycles to failure of young specimens at 22.5° flexion were similar to that of older specimens at 0° flexion, and survivorship of young specimens at 45° flexion was similar to the older cohort at 22.5°. Low back disorders (LBDs) are a major cause of both short- and long-term occupational disability in the United States, and it is clear that workers in certain occupations are more susceptible to LBD.2-5 Specifically, epidemiologic studies have shown that jobs involving heavy physical demands such as construction,2,3 mining,2,4 and farming,5 engender increased risk of back pain. These occupations are thought to experience high LBD rates as a result of their extreme postural and manual lifting demands. Studies have shown that jobs involving significant lifting 6-9 and jobs that involve frequent bending10-12 are associated with increased LBD risk. Workers in the mining industry, in particular, often have to lift heavy materials in restricted workspaces that compel torso flexion. An understanding of the impact of repeated loading of the spine in flexion on fatigue failure of spinal tissues is thus a critical issue for our research agency, which is concerned with reducing the pain and disability associated with LBD in the mining industry. It is well accepted that loads experienced by the spine during manual lifting tasks are sufficient to cause fractures in the endplates of lumbar vertebrae, particularly on repeated loading. 13-15 Endplate fractures may not be painful in and of themselves 16; however, evidence suggests that the process of internal disc disruption and disc degeneration may be initiated via endplate fractures. 16,17 It has been shown that endplate damage will alter the distribution of stress in the disc, resulting in buckling of the lamellas of the internal anulus.17 Once this process has been initiated, repeated spine loading will cause additional disruption of the anular fibers, resulting in formation of significant fissures or tears. 11-21 If these tears occur near or extend close to the outer portions of the anulus, a wound healing process is initiated, which involves infiltration of mast cells, macrophages, and re¬lease of cytokines and growth factors. 21 The presence of these infiltrates has been strongly linked to discogenic low back pain. 21,22 Indeed, for patients experiencing chronic low back pain, the prevalence of internal disc disruption is at least 39%,19 which represents the most

"Sillimanite, kyanite, and andalusite are aluminum silicates having the same chemical composition (Al2Si05) and are used in the ceramic industry for the manufacture of high-grade refractories. ""Natural sillimanite with added corundum or other alumina to just short of mullite 2SiO2) proportions is unequalled for jobs where strength at high temperatures, resistance to spalling, and resistance to slagging by acid slags is desired. High-grade porcelain ware also requires these minerals.""At the same cost, sillimanite would be preferred for most uses, but the lack of any large source of sillimanite has given economic preference to kyanite or andalusite for special refractories and high-grade porcelain ware.""3/The possible economic value of the sillimanite schist in the piedmont Plateau was first recognized by Dr. L. L. Smith, of the University of South Carolina, who published an article in the Engineering and Mining Journal, August 1943, on an occurrence of sillimanite schist in South Carolina.The Bureau of Mines was interested in developing a large source of sillimanite to relieve the shortage of high-grade refractories, and initiated a project to locate the ore-bearing areas in Georgia and South Carolina and to develop the most favorable ones.Two hundred and seventy-eight outcrops of sillimanite-bearing schists were found by a Bureau of Mines engineer.4/ The schist occurs irregularly throughout a belt extending from Talbot County, Georgia; to Spartanburg County, South Carolina, about 220•miIes long and approximately 15 miles in maximum width. The Bureau drilled four areas of the more coarsely crystallized schist in Georgia and South Carolina:In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon; chief; conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work; and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch;.R. G. Knickerbocker; chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director."

This report (Safety File Guidance 6.0) is the eighth in a nine-part series of recommendations and guidance addressing the functional safety of processor-controlled mining equipment. It is part of a risk-based system safety process encompassing hardware, software, humans, and the operating environment for the equipment’s life cycle. Figure 1 shows a safety framework containing these recommendations. The reports in this series address the various life cycle stages of inception, design, approval and certification, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. These recommendations were developed as a joint project between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. They are intended for use by mining companies, original equipment manufacturers, and aftermarket suppliers to these mining companies. Users of these reports are expected to consider the set in total during the design cycle. • 1.0 Safety Introduction (Part 1).—This is an introductory report for the general mining industry. It provides basic system/software safety concepts, discusses the need for mining to address the functional safety of programmable electronics (PE), and includes the benefits of implementing a system/software safety program. • 2.1 System Safety (Part 2) and 2.2 Software Safety (Part 3).—These reports draw heavily from International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard IEC 61508 [IEC 1998a,b,c,d,e,f,g]and other standards. The scope is “surface and underground safety-related mining systems employing embedded, networked, and nonnetworked programmable electronics.” System safety seeks to design safety into all phases of the entire system. Software is a subsystem; thus, software safety is a part of the system’s safety. • 3.0 Safety File (Part 4).—This report contains the documentation that demonstrates the level of safety built into the system and identifies limitations for the system’s use and operation. In essence, it is a “proof of safety” that the system and its operation meet the appropriate level of safety for the intended application. It starts from the beginning of the design, is maintained during the full life cycle of the system, and provides administrative support for the safety program of the full system. • 4.0 Safety Assessment (Part 5).—The independent assessment of the safety file is addressed. It establishes consistent methods to determine the completeness and suitability of safety evidence and justifications. This assessment could be conducted by an independent third party. • Safety Framework Guidance.—It is intended to supplement the safety framework reports with guidance providing users with additional information. The purpose is to assist users in applying the concepts presented. In other words, the safety framework is what needs to be done and the guidance is how it can be done. The guidance information reinforces the concepts, describes various methodologies that can be used, and gives examples and references. It also gives information on the benefits and drawbacks of various methodologies. The guidance reports are not intended to promote a single methodology or to be an exhaustive treatment of the subject material. They provide information and references so that the user can more intelligently choose and implement the appropriate methodologies given the user’s application and capabilities. The Bureau of Mines investigated nitrous oxide (N20) stability when used as a solvent for organic removal from metal powder surfaces. Both supercritical and subcritical conditions were studied. This investigation was prompted by the occurrence of a violent reaction when supercritical N20 was being used to deoil a metal powder grinding waste sample that contained 20 to 25 wt pct cutting oil. Tests were conducted to determine the cause of the reaction and to define stability limits. Test data showed that the waste&apos;s oil fraction reacted violently with N20 acting as an oxidizer; the metal powder acted as a promoter to reduce the ignition temperature. Although the data were scattered, this temperature appeared to reach a minimum at a certain pressure (dependent on vessel and sample size). The minimum ignition temperature for a 0.64-g sample in a 72-cm3 vessel was 360° C at 200 psig. As the sample size increased, the ignition temperature decreased. For example, when the sample size was increased to 10 g, a reaction occurred at 240° C and 600 psig. Because of the variability of ignition temperature with pressure and sample size, safe operating conditions were not established. Overall, this research showed that extreme caution should be exercised when using N20 in an organic or organic-metal system.

It provides basic system/software safety concepts, discusses the need for mining to address the functional safety of programmable electronics (PE), and includes the benefits of implementing system/software safety program. • 2.1 System Safety (Part 2) and 2.2 Software Safety (Part 3).—These reports draw heavily from International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard IEC 61508 [IEC 1998a,b,c,d,e,f,g]and other standards. The scope is “surface and underground safety-related mining systems employing embedded, networked, and nonnetworked programmable electronics.” System safety seeks to design safety into all phases of the entire system. Software is a subsystem; thus, software safety is a part of the system’s safety. • 3.0 Safety File (Part 4).—This report contains the documentation that demonstrates the level of safety built into the system and identifies limitations for the system’s use and operation. In essence, it is a “proof of safety” that the system and its operation meet the appropriate level of safety for the intended application. It starts from the beginning of the design, is maintained during the full life cycle of the system, and provides administrative support for the safety program of the full system. • 4.0 Safety Assessment (Part 5).—The independent assessment of the safety file is addressed. It establishes consistent methods to determine the completeness and suitability of safety evidence and justifications. This assessment could be conducted by an independent third party. • Safety Framework Guidance.—It is intended to supplement the safety framework reports with guidance providing users with additional information. The purpose is to assist users in applying the concepts presented. In other words, the safety framework is what needs to be done and the guidance is how it can be done. The guidance information reinforces the concepts, describes various methodologies that can be used, and gives examples and references. It also gives information on the benefits and drawbacks of various methodologies. The guidance reports are not intended to promote a single methodology or to be an exhaustive treatment of the subject material. They provide information and references so that the user can more intelligently choose and implement the appropriate methodologies given the user’s application and capabilities. "A sensitive colorimetric assay for detecting mucins and glycoproteins rich in 0-glycosidically linked saccharides is reported. The method combines the susceptibility of N-acetylgalactosamine terminating 0-glyco idically linked saccharides to P-elimination with the Morgan-Elson reaction for N-acetylhexosamines with free reducing ends. All mucin and mucin-type glycoproteins but none of the serum-type glycoproteins tested resulted in characteristic color production. All mucins tested gave linear responses in the range 5 to 200 ""g and the assay was also adapted to the microscale involving the use of 96-well microtiter plates. The microassay in which the volumes of samples and reagents are scaled down 2.5-fold was particularly useful in monitoring of mucins, in the presence of other glycoconjugates, in large numbers of samples obtained during fractionation procedures. Cesium chloride, cesium bromide, potassium thiocyanate, and various detergents do not interfere with the colorimetric determination. Guanidine hydrochloride, cesium triftuoroacetate, and B-mercap- . toethanol decreased color by 30 to 45%; however, the interference was not serious to prevent the use of the method for detection of mucins in their presence. The use of the method for the specific detection of mucin during fractionation by gel filtration and density gradient centrifugation of cystic fibrosis sputum samples is demonstrated. Mucins are an important class of biomacromolecules whose structure-function relationship is poorly understood (1,2). The investigations of mucins are hampered by difficulties in purifying these very large size molecules which appear to avidly bind other components of the mucus (3,4). One of the problems during purification is the specific detection of mucins. For example, during the various purification steps, the fractions containing mucins are typically detected by assaying for neutral sugars (hexoses) (5,6), for sialic acids (7), or for periodate oxidizable saccharide units (8). However, these methods are not entirely satisfactory because neutral sugars, sialic acids, and periodate-oxidizable saccharides are also components of other glycoconjugates. In addition, the neutral sugar and sialic acid measurements are also subject to interference from high levels of proteins and nucleic acids."

[Frequent accidents in the transportation and. handling off petroleum and its more volatile products, serve as a reminder that this is indeed a hazardous undertaking and should always be conducted with due caution. On October 4, 1920, vapors in the held of the British tanks steamer G. R, Crowe became ignited and, caused an explosion which, it is reported, killed 5 men, injured. 40 others and endangered the lives of some 300 more. On November 10, 1920 the Morgan, Line freighter El Mundo was almost totally sot destroyed in New York harbor by fire caused by an explosion of gases in a fuel-oil tank. These two disastrous explosions emu emphasize the ever- present danger attending the use of petroleum products. This is also shown by the frequent occurrence of minor fires and explosions, caused by careless handling of baseline, which result in loss of life or serious injury to railroad employees, to oil-tank drivers, and to individuals in various walls of life. Statistics indicate that the lighter cuts of petroleum products, because of fire hazards, are dangerous, and are so considered by the railroad and other transportation companies. According o the Bureau of Explosives (Bar-eau of Explosives Report No. 13 p. 7) during 1919 transportation of gasoline in the United States resulted in 172 accidents, causing 2 deaths and 31 injuries, and a property loss to the extent of $687,966. Among the causes of ignition, an open light in the vicinity of the container stands out most prominently.]

The Bureau of Mines investigated alloys containing mischmetal (MM), cobalt, copper, magnesium, and iron for use in permanent magnets in place of the scarce samarium-cobalt alloys. The magnetic properties of MM-Co, MM-Co-Cu, MM-Co-Cu-Mg, and MM-Co-Cu-Fe-Mg alloys were evaluated. Magnets were fabricated by powder metallurgy consisting of arc-melting the metals, crushing and grinding the resultant alloys, alining and compacting the powder, and sintering the compacts. Magnetic values of MHc = 4.7 kOe, BHc = 4.07 kOe, Br = 6.81 kG, and (BH)max = 10.0 MGOe were obtained with a MM-Co alloy containing 36±0.5 wt-pct MM. By substituting copper and magnesium for part of the cobalt, the values for MHc and BHc were increased to 29.0 kOe and 5.89 kOe, respectively. This intrinsic coercivity value exceeded that of Sm-Co alloy obtained in our laboratory. The addition of iron to MM-Co-Cu-Mg alloys resulted in an increase of Br to 6.90 kG and (BH)max to 10.3 MGOe. Copper and magnesium contents of these alloys were optimized to obtain maximum values of MHc.
