Vehicle vibration exposure has been linked to chronic back pain and low back symptoms among agricultural tractor drivers. The objectives of this study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) were to assess driver whole body vibration (WBV) exposures and recommend interventions to reduce the risk of back related injuries, particularly relative to vehicle jarring/jolting (the transient mechanical shock components of WBV). The methodology included collecting, from two independent samples, ?eld data and health and work history data of farm equipment operators. Data were collected during mowing, raking, baling, chiseling, tilling, and road travel for different model tractors. Spraying using a sprayer and shrub removal with a skid steer loader were also included. Based on ISO 2631 (1985), the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, threshold limit values, presents 0.5 m/s2 as the action level recommended by the Commission of European Communities for overall weighted total RMS acceleration (vector sum for axes x, y, and z) [ACGIH, 2006. Threshold limit values and biological exposure indices. Cincinnati, OH]. WBV measured at the operator/seat interface exceeded this action level. The roughest rides and highest vector sum accelerations occurred with small utility tractor mowers (3.3 and 2.8 m/s2) and a skid steer loader (1.7 m/s2). Major ?ndings from health and work history data showed 96% of participants reported having to bend or twist their necks, although 24% reported neck symptoms. Sixty four percent of participating operators reported experiencing back symptoms (e.g., pain, aching, stiffness, etc.). Recommendations included: specifying a seat that ??better?? isolates operators from jars/jolts with new tractor purchases; maintaining the seat/seat suspension and replacing worn or damaged cushions with NIOSH tested viscoelastic foam padding; using larger diameter tires with radial ply instead of bias ply construction, particularly on small utility tractor mowers, to aid in attenuating ride ??roughness??; using a swivel seat to reduce the stress on the neck from bending or twisting; and improving efforts to educate owner/operators of the adverse effects of WBV exposures. Since the data presented in this paper were collected from two independent samples, the authors were unable to draw any correlations or etiological inferences from the study. However, results were compared and contrasted with other studies which included similar vibration measurements in agriculture.

The human lumbar spine is inherently an unstable structure and requires sophisticated neuromuscular control to maintain its stability and for performing physical tasks. As a consequence, it is important to understand the potential health effects on human operators of mechanical stimuli such as shock and vibration.1 Impact applied to a vehicle operator combines the risk of sudden, unexpected load with the mechanical stress of the seated posture.2 Because many work environments contain the potential for multiple, unexpected impacts, it is important to understand how the trunk muscles respond to complex conditions. We believe the results have implications for isolation design and standards development. Methods Muscle activity was recorded during simple and complex impacts, applied randomly and without warning, while subjects sat on an air-suspension truck seat located on a man-rated 6-DOF motion platform (Rexroth-Hydraudyne). Simple (single) impacts consisted of 100 ms quarter-sine jolts in the side-to-side (L and R) and vertical upward (V) directions with peak amplitude at 0.4 g. Complex impacts consisted of combinations of two simple (single) impacts in sequence (LV, RV, VL, VR), separated by 100 ms. Twelve right-handed males (23.7 ± 7.8 years old) were tested without a blindfold under 2 posture conditions (supported while leaning back and unsupported, sitting upright) and 2 seat suspension conditions (present or absent). Each type of impact was repeated three times under each posture and suspension condition, resulting in 84 impacts in total. Surface EMG signals from the left and right erector spinae (ES), rectus abdominis (AR), external obliques (EO) and internal obliques (IO) were recorded and transformed to 25ms RMS values. The response time, defined as the time the muscle activity exceeded the mean + 2 STD of the pre-impact resting period, peak response amplitude, and time were then derived. A mixed-model repeated measures analysis of variance was used to evaluate statistical significance, where type I error rate was set at .05. Results One question we asked of these data was whether there were differences in responses related to simple single strike impacts (L, R, or V) and complex, double-strike impacts (LV, RV, VL, VR). There are 21 possible combinations of comparisons of simple and complex impacts to each other. The differences found are listed in Table 1.

The mucus secreted in the respiratory tract provides the first barrier against inhaled particulate and gaseous toxicants. The major component of mucus which is responsible for the physical properties and protective functions of the respiratory mucus is mucin. We have initiated investigations to determine the effects of coal mine dust on the synthesis of respiratory mucin by rat trachea under in vitro and in vivo conditions. In this study we have established optimum conditions-:ro-r~ the asceptic growth and mucin secretion of rat tracheal explants in culture. The best outgrowth of ciliated epithelial cells and maximum mucin production was obtained in CMRL 1066 medium containing 10% fetal calf serum. The explants continued to secrete mucin even after three weeks in culture. For the estimation and characterization of mucins the tracheae were cultured in the presence of [3H] glucosamine and [35S] sulfate or [14C]leucine. The mucins were isolated from the medium by gel filtration, treatment with hyaluronidase, ion exchange chromatography and CsBr density gradient centrifugation. Precipitation of polyanionic material in the culture media with cetyl pyridinium chloride and fractional extraction with NaCl also yielded mucin free of glycosaminoglycans, but in low yields. The tritium label in the purified mucin was distributed in sialic acid (50%) galactosamine (37%) and glucosamaine (13%). The density of purified mucin as determined by CsBr gradient centrifugation was about l.43g per ml in comparison to l.46g per ml for human respiratory mucin with a carbohydrate content of about 80% by weight. Alkaline borohydride treatment released saccharides which contained about 80% of the radioactivity. The effect of adding varying amounts of coal dust to the culture medium is under investigation. The effect of slag composition on lead losses to slags and on the behavior of associated accessory elements in lead blast furnace smelting has been studied by the Bureau of Mines. Equilibrations of 30 g of lead and synthetic slag doped with Cu, In, TI, and Sb at 1,200° C in CO-C02 atmospheres revealed the importance of the FeO:Si02 ratio and the basicity ratio, (CaO+MgO):SiO2, of the slag. Lead losses to slags increased with an increasing FeO:Si02 ratio and decreased with an in-creasing basicity ratio. Copper and indium distribution coefficients, [Lx =] increased from 15 at the lower basicity ratios to near 60 at higher basicity ratios. LTI values increased from 20 to 150 as slag basicity increased. Lcu, Lin, and LTI were relatively in-dependent of the FeO:Si02 ratio, but increased with greater amounts of accessory elements in the system. Antimony distribution alone was shown to be strongly affected by FeO:Si02 ratio, although data were scattered. LSb values ranged from 20 to 800 and decreased sharply with increasing FeO:Si02 ratios. The basicity ratio and the level of accessory element load did not have any noticeable effect on LSb.

Objective To accurately measure very low air velocities (0-100 ft/min) in U.S. large-opening underground metal/nonmetal mines. Background Hundreds of metal/nonmetal underground mines operate throughout the United States. They extract commercial products from deposits such as limestone, salt, and gypsum. Mining generates a wide variety of gases and dusts, such as silica, diesel exhaust, radon, blasting byproducts, and perhaps even methane. If these substances become airborne, they can adversely affect the health and safety of underground workers. Many metal/nonmetal mines have large cross-sectional airways that could be 60 times larger than an average underground coal mine entry. These large airways require adequate volumes of fresh air to dilute, make harmless, and exhaust the toxic and, at times, explosive byproducts. However, in some underground mine sections, air movement is barely perceptible. The technology of measuring very low air velocities will become increasingly more important for operators of large-opening stone mines in order to monitor miner exposure to diesel particulate matter. Conventional anemometers (e.g., vane) are capable of accurately measuring air velocities only above 100 ft/min. Thus, it was necessary to investigate other anemometry technology to detect low air velocities in the range of 0-100 ft/min. Two different portable ultrasonic anemometers were tested. Actual testing was done in an underground limestone mine with openings about 51 ft wide by 29 ft high. Ultrasonic Anemometers Vane-type anemometers are commonly used by engineering personnel throughout the underground coal mine industry. They work well in measuring air velocities >100 ft/min. However, a separate technology, e.g., portable ultrasonics, is needed to measure air velocities much below 100 ft/min at various places within the large mine opening. Laser-doppler technology was also considered for this application, but was ruled out because of its high cost and other technical limitations. With no moving parts, the portable ultrasonic anemometers are claimed to be accurate down to about 1or 2 ft/min. The first type of ultrasonic anemometer that was examined underground is manufactured by Gill Instruments Ltd., Hampshire, U.K. The U.S. distributor is IN USA, Needham, MA. The Gill Instruments Solent Volometer (figure 1) is a battery-powered, single-axis anemometer meant for measuring low to medium air flows up to1,999 ft/min. It uses the ultrasonic "time of flight" principle where pulses of high-frequency sound are transmitted along the air flow path and the time taken to reach the receiver is measured. The faster the air speed, the quicker the pulses reach the receiver. The second ultrasonic anemometer that was examined under-ground is manufactured by Airflow Developments Ltd., Buckinghamshire, U.K. The U.S. distributor is Airflow Technical Products, Inc., Andover, NJ. The Anemosonic UA-6 (figure 2) is a battery-powered, handheld instrument with digital display. It measures air velocity (0 to 9,999 ft/min) or volume flow, flow turbulence intensity, and air temperature. Neither device is considered to be intrinsically safe for use in underground gassy coal mines. A comparison of salient specifications of both instruments is shown in table 1. The total suspended weight includes the instrument (Gill) or instrument probe (Airflow) plus about 35 ft of connecting cable attached to the pole. This combination of instrument plus cable length allows two operators to measure air velocities up to about 30 ft above the mine floor. Figures 1 and 2 show how each unit would be attached to an extensible, graduated fiberglass rod in order to position the sensor probe at a certain spatial point (centroid of the quadrate) within the underground large opening.

Although the pathophysiology of vibration-induced white finger (VWF) is still under discussion, evidence has been accumulated to understand the underlying mechanism. VWF is pathophysiologically characterized by an enhanced vasospastic response to cold, which can result from an imbalance between vasoconstriction and vasodilation in the digital arteries in response to cold (i.e., vasoconstriction-dominant). The imbalance is supposed to be due to faults in vascular vessels and sympathetically mediated vascular tone. Enhanced vasospastic response to cold Narrowing of arterial lumen with medial smooth muscle hypertrophy. Possible functional factors for enhanced vasoconstriction • Increased sympathetic nervous activity to cold (e.g., norepinephrine) • Increased release of endothelin-1 (ET-1; an endothelial-dependent vasoconstrictor) from the endothelium • Increased reactivity of alpha2-adrenoreceptors to cold Possible functional factors for decreased vasodilation • Decreased release of nitric oxide (NO; an endothelial-dependent vasodilator) from the endothelium • Decreased release of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP; a vasodilatory neuropeptide) from sensory afferents The question is how their interrelations or imbalances among them are Vibration and arterial damage The next question is, how does hand-arm vibration exposure induce such pathophysiological changes in VWF patients? Recent morphological evidence from animal experiments shows that vibration acceleration stress (including shear stress) and smooth muscle contraction contribute to arterial damage of smooth muscle and endothelial cells. The vibration-induced arterial damage is frequency-amplitude-dependent.

Noise processing experiments with ELF (3 to 300 Hz) atmospheric noise and signals in the 40 to 80 Hz range are described. The primary purpose of the experiments was to record and analyze wideband ELF noise in order to design the noise processing portion of a receiver which minimizes the required transmitter power. The application of appropriate theory and extensive simulations led to a noise processor which consists of the following functions: (1) a compensating (or whitening) filter, (2) a prenotch filter clipper, (3) notch filters at frequencies of manmade interference (e. g., power lines), (4) a post-notch filter clipper, and (5) a phase-coherent linear matched filter. The nonlinear processing provides considerable gain relative to a linear receiver (i. e. , a receiver consisting only of a matched filter and appropriate whitening filters). It is convenient to measure sys tem performance in terms of an "effective noise level" which is equal to twice the received signal energy divided by the signal to noise ratio at the matched filter output. For example, the highest effective noise levels observed at 45 Hz with the nonlinear processor were about -134, -131 and -137 dB wrt 1 amp/m [Hz] using Saipan, Malta and Norway data, respectively, compared to 1 percent exceedance levels of effective noise for the linear receiver of about -115, 115 and -130 dB wrt 1 amp/m [Hz] respectively.

As part of the development of processes for producing synthetic fuels from coal, the Bureau of Mines prepared a special jet fuel in a pilot plant for evaluation by the Air Force. This jet fuel had all the required physical properties, including the important specifications of high heating value and high density. However, the finished fuel did not pass the stability test specified by the Air Force and conducted by the Southwest Research Institute in a high-temperature research coker. The cause for this instability is being investigated because pure compounds of the type identified in this fuel are known to be stable. The tar acid oil used was a 230° to 300° C. fraction of low-temperature tar obtained by carbonization of a West Virginia bituminous coal in the pilot plant of the Consolidation Coal Co. Both the desulfurization at 400° C. and saturation at 300" C. were done in the vapor phase at 2,500 p.s.i.g. After catalytic treatment and distillation the final jet fuel had a boiling range of 194° to 247° C., a net heating value of 18,420 B.t.u./lb. and a specific gravity of 0.8463 60° F./60° F. It also had u pour point below -62° C., and at 0° C. its viscosity was 4.5 cs. The oil was virtually all bicyclic, 41 pct. noncondensed and 56 pct. condensed.

Since roof falls in the vicinity of the working face in underground coal mines are a major source of fatalities and injuries in this country's coal mines, it is evident that the present systems of temporary support for use in this working area are ineffective. This seems to be chiefly due to the inconvenience of setting up heavy and awkward devices such as jacks, posts and the like, which also interfere with the movement of men and machines in this critical working area. This program was concerned with defining and testing commercially available materials that could be used as support elements in a more convenient flexible personnel shield. The objectives of this program were to: 1. survey the materials that might provide the support elements of a flexible-material personnel shield for use in underground coal mines and prepare a list of those materials which appear most suitable for use in coal mines. 2. prepare a proposed testing plan for the materials to be selected from the aforementioned list by the Bureau of Mines for further evaluation. The test plan was designed to provide the following information: a. Tensile strength. b. Proportional limit. c. Creep characteristics at room temperature. d. Elastic properties depicted by stress-strain curves. Properties were tested in two directions for woven fabrics. e. Density. f. Resistance to abrasion. g. Resistance to attack by mine atomsphere. h. Resistance to humidity. i. Impact characteristics.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a HCI-02 leaching procedure to recover Cu, Ni, and Co from a low-grade bulk sulfide flotation concentrate prepared from the Duluth gabbro complex. Since the Duluth gabbro complex is the largest known and unexploited Ni resource in the United States, the development of options for extracting the metal values from the flotation concentrate of this domestic resource is necessary. Conditions were determined for producing a pregnant solution low in Fe to facilitate recovery of the metal values. Leaching experiments were conducted at 15 pct solids, 1000 to 1200 C, 0.2 to 0.3 g HCI per gram concentrate in a 50-gal reactor pressurized to 50 pSig with 02. Base metal extractions from the concentrate were, in percent, 90 to 92 Cu, 99 Ni, 97 to 99 Co, and 0.1 .Fe. Precious metals extractions were erratic and unpredictable; at best their extractions were, in percent, 55 Au, 90 Ag, 40 Pt, and 45 Pd. The reaction time at 1200 C was 0.5 h. The use of compressed air instead of 02 as the oxidant was also investigated. Solvent extraction using LIX 622 was used to remove Cu from the pregnant solution. Cementation on Cu was tested for precious metals recovery, while sulfide precipitation was used to produce a Ni-Co product. A conceptual flowsheet for treating the Duluth gabbro concentrate is proposed.

This information circular is one of a series published by the Federal Bureau of Mines in which the methods and costs of producing uranium ore on the Colorado Plateau are discussed. This report describes the three largest company-operated uranium mines of Climax Uranium Co. - the G-1, the Mineral Joe, and the Frank No. 1. Climax Uranium Co., a subsidiary of American Metal Climax, Inc., was [corporated] May 11, 1950, just 2 years after establishment of the domestic uranium program by the Atomic Energy Commission. Twenty-five years earlier Arthur H. Bunker, now chairman of the board, American Metal Climax, Inc., organized and operated the U. S. Vanadium Co. at Rifle, Colo.3/ Soon after Climax Uranium Co. was organized, it entered into a contract with the Federal Government to build a uranium-vanadium processing mill in Grand Junction, Colo. Under the contract Climax leased from the Federal Government certain uranium-bearing lands that had been withdrawn from public entry in 1948. From Minerals, Engineering Co. on June 12, 1950, Climax acquired other uranium-vanadium properties on Calamity, Outlaw, and Monogram Mesas in Colorado and on Polar Mesa and in the Yellow Cat area of Utah. To house the milling equipment, Climax leased the old Grand Junction sugarmill building of the Holly Sugar Co. Milling facilities, based on a then new process developed for treating both uranium and vanadium, were completed, and the plant went into production in 1951.

"A comparative study of the intensities of the IR modes in the pjlotoacoustic and. FrIR spectroscopy of amorphous and crystalline SiO2 particles is presented. It is observed that in photoacoustic spectroscopy of amorphous SiO2, IR modes of surface species are enhanced by over an order of magnitude compared to the bulk IR modes of SiO2. This effect, though not yet understood, may find applications in surface science.Since the publication of the Rosencwaig-Gersho theory of the photoacoustic effect in solids in 1976 [1], a great deal of attention has been paid to the development .of photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) into an analytical technique for condensed matter studies, especially when combined with the modern Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer [2-8]. PAS has now been applied to a variety of experimental situations [2, 3] and it is particularly suitable for opaque powders and for cases where ~ample preparation (e.g. mixing with KBr as is usually done in FTIR spectroscopy) is not desirable. Another area of interest is the depth profiling feature of PAS, which is studied by varying the modulation frequency of the incident radiation [2-8]. The one-dimensional Rosencwaig-Gersho theory for non-porous samples has been extended to other cases [9-12]. Recently it has become known [11, 12] that for porous samples with porosity the IR modes are enhanced by a factor proportional toe. This enhancement is due to the pressure wave set up in the interstitial gas in the porous sample and this enhancement has been reported by a number of groups [12-14].In this Letter we report the observation of anomalously large enhancement of the PAS signal for certain surface IR modes on the surface of amorphous silica particles. This observation differs from the previous reports in that certain surface modes are enhanced by over an order of magnitude compared to the bulk IR modes. Although the reasons for this enhancement of the surface IR modes in PAS are not understood at present, this observation may open up new approaches to the study of surfaces. Results of these initial observations are given in this Letter. ·Experimental studies reported here were carried out on an FTIR spectrometer (Mattson Instruments, Model Cygnus 100) equipped with an MCT detector. The same instrument was used for PAS studies in conjunction with an MTEC (Model 100) PA cell. The sample cell and the spectrometer are continuously flushed with dry, CO2 free air obtained by the use of Balston Instruments Air Dryer Filter System (Model 75-60). Usually data were collected for 32 scans at 4 cm-I resolution, although both scan and resolution can be varied. For FTIR studies, samples were mixed with IR-grade KBr and pelletised. For PAS, no sample preparation is necessary and data are ratioed against dry carbon black [4, 5]."

"In presenting this list of permissible explosives and blasting devices, the Bureau of Mines desires to call attention to pages 20 and 25 outlining the conditions in use under which, and only under which, the explosive or blasting device is permissible.In view of a recent publication recounting trade practice favoring the use of a blasting device without stemming, particular emphasis is placed upon condition 4 on page 20 and condition 2 on page 25. An explosive or a blasting device enumerated in the permissible lists of this Bureau is not permissible in use unless it is properly confined with clay or other incombustible stemming.PERMISSIBLE EXPLOSIVES TESTED UNDER SCHEDULE 17CAn active list of permissible explosives was published in October 1938 as part of Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3421, under the title ""Active List of Permissible Explosives and. This list included 191 brand names.Changes in the list that have been authorized to June 30, 1939, placed 56 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a result of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. "INTRODUCTION The Miscellaneous Minerals Division of the War Production Board requested the Bureau of Mines to investigate the Gallatin corundum property as a possible source of corundum, which was in short supply due to the war. The Gallatin corundum property, also known as the ""Fuller mine"", the ""Montana Corundum mine"", and as the ""Old Qorundum mine"" was first examined by a Bureau of Mines engineer 2/ in July 1943. Bureau of Mines work on the property started October 11, 1943, was recessed May 5, 1944, and was resumed in October 1944 when the diamond-drilling program started. The project was completed February 7, 1945. The data obtained are given in this report.The Federal Geological Survey made a reconnaissance survey in the spring of 1943 and mapped the area the following autumn. In the context of the following report, an hazardous location can be described as any industrial area in which flammable or explosive gases, vapors, and dusts can be encountered. When electrical apparatus is used in such hazardous atmospheres, the chance of a dust or gas ignition is ever present. Consequently, in an effort to reduce the ignition hazard, several protection systems have been devised. Such systems are termed electrical hazard reduction techniques. The most widely accepted and used of these, the explosion-proof enclosure, is the principal subject of this report. However, other techniques are briefly mentioned. Hazard reduction techniques used in coal mine atmospheres (which can contain methane, coal dust, and air mixtures) are classified as Group I. The explosion-proof enclosure commonly used in mines is defined by the USBM Schedule 2G as a device that can contain internal explosions of methane-air mixtures without undergoing damage or excessive distortion and without an ignition of a surrounding methane-air mixture or discharge of flame. (100) Internationally, the definition remains the same except the words "discharge of flame" are not present. (4,5,31,42,52,76,102) The latter description often refers to flame-proof enclosure construction, but the terms "flameproof: and "explosion-proof" commonly have the same connotation. These enclosures which may not be vapor tight, are distinguished by heavy-wall cast or welded construction and bolted or threaded close fitting flanges.

Alveolar macrophages (AM) exposed to cytokines or bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) produce the free radical nitric oxide (NO·) by an inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). They also release reactive oxygen free radicals following exposure to silica dust. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether NO· is produced by rat AM and/or recruited leukocytes following the intratracheal (IT) instillation of silica. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (175 to 225 g) were IT instilled with either silica dust (10 mg/100 g body wt) or LPS (0.25 mg/100 g body wt). After 24 h, bronchoalveolar lavage cells (BALC) and lavaged lung tissue were assayed for iNOS mRNA. Cell counts of BALC and iNOS-dependent (Nw-nitro-Larginine methyl ester [L-NAME]-inhibitable) chemiluminescence generated by AM were also determined. Northern blot analysis demonstrated that the steady-state levels of BALC iNOS mRNA were significantly increased by 3-fold following IT silica and by 7-fold following IT LPS. Partially enriched fractions of either AM or leukocytes from silica-treated rats both exhibited significantly elevated iNOS mRNA in Northern analysis. iNOS-dependent chemiluminescence was significantly increased in AM by 36-fold following IT silica and by 89-fold following IT LPS. Differential counts of BALC showed that AM numbers did not change in any of the treatments; however, red blood cells increased by 30-fold following IT silica and by 23-fold following IT LPS. Total leukocytes (polymorphonuclear leukocytes plus lymphocytes) increased by 58-fold following IT silica and by 274-fold following IT LPS. The results demonstrate that AM and neutrophils iNOS steady-state mRNA levels, AM iNOS-dependent chemiluminescence, and lavagable red blood cells and leukocytes all increased following IT silica. These findings suggest that NO· production in rat AM and neutrophils is increased in response to silica. NO· has the ability to then combine with superoxide and form a highly reactive toxic species, peroxynitrite, which may be responsible in part for silica-induced lung damage.
