The Bureau of Mines, investigated a cyanidation-carbon adsorption technique for extracting gold from arsenopyrite concentrates. Agitation leach experiments were conducted on 85-pct-minus-35-mesh gravity concentrates containing 21.8 oz gold and 6.4 oz silver per ton. Results obtained in leaching the concentrates showed that 96.9 pct gold and 90.7 pct silver extraction could be achieved in 96 hours of agitation. Gold and silver were recovered from the resulting pregnant solution by exposure to granular activated carbon in a countercurrent system. Carbon loadings of 2,556 oz of gold and 502 oz of silver per ton were achieved. These loadings are significantly higher than heretofore thought practical.

The purpose of this study is to develop designs to facilitate and accelerate auger rotation stoppage (and auger rotation start up so as to promote auger disengagement during auger miner repositioning) and to provide a time delay and warning signal prior to auger start up to permit any miner s near the augers to get away from the augers before they start rotating. In the underground coal mines in the U.S., there are four auger miners that are currently in use. They are the Jeffrey 100L (see Figure 1-1) and 100M (see Figure 1-2), and the Wilcox WCM and the MK20A (see Figure 1-3).

This Bureau of Mines study was conducted to determine the sulfur reduction potential attainable when washing fine-size coal on a spiral concentrator. Crushed samples of Middle Kittanning and Bakerstown bed coals washed on the spiral provided pyritic sulfur reductions of up to 90 percent for the plus 200-mesh material. Pyritic sulfur reductions on the minus 200-mesh material seldom exceeded 30 percent; consequently, this material would require further treatment. The capacity of the spiral was 2 tph per unit when washing l4-mesh by 0 coal. The ability to remove pyrite combined with the higher-than-expected capacity makes the spiral worthy of consideration as a rougher-cleaner in new fine-coal desulfurization circuits.

Electric discharge ignition has been reinvestigated in a modified Hartmann apparatus for lycopodium powder with air. Minimum stored energy to ignite air dispersions of lycopodium was 25 to 30 mj; ignition occurred with 1 gram of lycopodium dispersed into the 2.7-liter vessel. Ignition energy was measured as a function of the weight of powder used, although some reservations are expressed concerning the uniformity of the lycopodium-air mixtures. In particular, wall layers of lycopodium, remaining after dispersal of 1 gram of lycopodium, were as easily ignitable as the most easily ignited air dispersion. Thus, an unanswered question has arisen concerning the role of surface coatings in the flammability of all marginally ignitable mixtures.

This report summarizes the results of laboratory investigations by the Alaska Mining Experiment Station, Juneau, to determine the practicability of treating cinnabar-stibnite ore by bulk flotation and controlled-atmosphere roasting of the concentrate. Ore from the Red Devil mine near Sleetmute, Alaska, was selected for testing; it is typical of ores widely distributed throughout the Kuskokwim River Basin. The material, consisting of stibnite and cinnabar in ankerite, dolomite, and quartz, assayed 1.55 percent Hg and 2.87 percent Sb. Continuous treatment of the ore in a laboratory flotation circuit recovered 95.7 percent of the mercury and 82.6 percent of the antimony in a concentrate that assayed 20.4 percent Hg and 34.6 percent Sb.

The value of domestic raw nonfuel mineral output in 1985 was estimated at $23.7 billion, 2% above the 1984 value of $23.1 billion. This crude mineral output was the basis for approximately $244 billion worth of processed materials of mineral origin. [ ] A U.S. company permanently closed its alumina plant in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, reducing domestic alumina capacity by 10%. Another U.S. company sold its 26% interest in an alumina plant in Jamaica to its two U.S. partners. On completion of the purchase agreement, the two remaining partners promptly closed the plant for an indefinite period, citing a world oversupply of alumina and unacceptably low prices.

The Bureau of Mines surveyed the solid wastes that have accumulated from coal mining in Washington, Oregon, and Montana. Location, amount, character, and condition were determined, and both economic and environmental factors were considered. Areas covered by waste comprise 800 acres in Washington, 5 acres in Oregon, and 1,200 acres in Montana. In a few cases waste is being utilized, particularly cinder from burned refuse dumps, as fill in road construction and as a ceramic raw material. It is estimated that wastes deriving from coal mined for electric power generation by 1974 may amount to 3 million tons of washery refuse, 2.7 million tons of fly ash, and 1,000 acres of spoil banks.

A solvent extraction procedure was developed on a laboratory scale for recovering trisodium phosphate, zinc, and iron from waste phosphate sludge as separate products. The sludge was dissolved in hydrochloric acid, and iron was extracted as ferric chloride by isopropyl ether. Zinc was extracted by di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid in kerosine. The efficiencies of the one-and two-stage extractions ranged from 98 to nearly 100 percent. Trisodium phosphate was recovered by crystallization from the raffinate. The value of two marketable products is considerably more than than the costs of the major reagent. The process was developed to permit recycling of values in this waste and to consequently reduce stream pollution from this source.

"ABSTRACTIn exothermic and endothermic catalytic reactions, control of the temperature is of utmost importance. Basic calculations are developed for determining catalyst volumes of various types of reactors that give particular temperature distributions, and the individual designs are compared.INTRODUCTIONA narrow range of permissible operating temperatures characterizes many, catalytic reactions, and yields of the desired product are reduced sharply if operating temperatures fall outside of this optimum range. In order to achieve close temperature control, reactors with internal heat exchange have been developed in which thin layers of catalyst are located between cooling surfaces.The temperature distribution for an exothermic reaction in such a thin catalyst layer is shown in figure 1. Reactive gases flow downward through the catalyst section, which is 2so wide. It is assumed that a constant amount of heat is generated per unit of bulk catalyst volume, and that this heat is entirely removed through the walls. Consequently, except for a short section at the entrance of the reactor, the heat of reaction is not available for raising the temperature of the gases. Thus, at all points equidistant from the axis, the temperature is the same throughout the entire reactor. At the middle of the gas stream, the temperature is designated as uo. Traveling radially from this point, the temperature decreases because of the removal of heat through the walls and reaches, in the vicinity of the cooling surface, the value u1. Over a relatively narrow zone of width, b, the temperature falls to the value u2 at the cooling surface. Because inadequate data are available on heat-transfer coefficients for a gas flowing through a porous bed, and also because the narrow zone, b, is probably without effect on the reaction by virtue of its low temperature, the temperature drop in this zone at the cooling wall was disregarded. The following calculations were made on the basis of the temperature drop (u0 - u1) resulting from heat conduction within the main body of the catalyst bed only."

MINFO has been developed to serve as a frontend for three databases created to store basic minerals information gathered during the minerals resource assessment conducted by U.S. Bureau of Mines(USBM) for the Malheur and Jordan resource areas of southeastern Oregon(MJRA). The primary database is the Minerals Location Inventory (MLI.DBF) which contains of information assembled from field work performed during this project, the USBM Minerals Availability System/Mineral Information Location System(MAS/MILS) database, the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral lndustries(DOGAMT) Mineral Information Location(MILOC) database, and the U.S. (Geological Survey(USGS) Mineral Resource Database System(MRDS), In addition, assay results are contained in the geochemical database (ELEMENTS.DBF) and modified X-ray diffraction analysis information is contained in the minerals database (MINOR.M.DBF). MINFO includes four types of program modules: ? Enter/Edit Data was developed to allow the addition of new information and to encourage correction of errors by providing a convenient means of entering and editing data and a large degree of automatic checking and filtering of entries. ? ACAD/DBF Link links each site symbol posted on the map in the drawing file to a record in the database. This provides the user with the ability to use a mouse or other pointing device to graphically select a site for viewing and editing. Edits are performed directly in the database file, ? Reports contains 7 formats of data output for creating files for printing, transfer to other database formats, and exporting to other software packages such as spreadsheets and word processing programs. ? Maps includes 5 programs for creating AutoCAD script files which can be used to create maps of selected information in conjunction with AutoCAD. Mineral location mapping files derived from MLI.DBF can be created in 2 formats. Mapping files can be generated from each of the 2 sets of geochemical analyses contained in ELEMENTS.DBF. X-ray diffraction analyses can also be translated into instructions for creating and posting piecharts at sampling sites.

Multiple seam mining interactions caused by full extraction mining, whether due to undermining or overmining, frequently involve tensile failure of the affected mine roof. The adverse ground control conditions may prevent mining for both safety and economic reasons. Prior researchers have identified the geometric, geologic and mining factors controlling multiple seam mining interactions. This numerical study examines the mechanics of these interactions using a modeling procedure that 1) incorporates the essential constitutive behavior of the rock such as strain-softening of the intact rock and shear and tensile failure along bedding planes and 2) captures the geologic variability of the rock especially the layering of weak and strong rocks and weak bedding planes. Specifically, the numerical study considered the effect of vertical stress, interburden thickness, and the immediate roof quality of the affected seam in both undermining and overmining situations. The models show that for overburden-to-interburden thickness (OB/IB) ratios of less than 5, interactions do not occur, and that for OB/IB more than 50, extreme interaction is a certainty. In between, the possibility of an interaction was found to depend on gob width-to-interburden thickness ratio, site specific geology and horizontal stress to rock strength ratio in addition to the OB/IB ratio. The models also showed that horizontal stress was profoundly altered well above or below a full extraction area and that these changes are likely to influence the success or failure of multiple seam mining. The role of horizontal stress in multiple seam mining interactions has received little attention in prior investigations. Four factors control the mechanics of multiple seam mining interactions: 1. vertical stress concentration 2. horizontal stress concentration 3. stress re-direction 4. bedding plane slip bands A combination of vertical and horizontal stress increase and high stress gradients in the vicinity of full extraction areas re-orients principal stresses into a very unfavorable direction. This seemingly small stress re-orientation has a profound adverse effect on bedded rock.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines study was conducted to gain a basis for recommending methods to predict and prevent the occurrence of cutter roof failure, a common ground control problem in mines of the Northern Appalachian Coal Basin. This was accomplished by determining the geologic and engineering factors responsible for cutter development at six mines affected by cutter roof failure. Three distinct factors were found to be initiators of cutter roof failure: (1) high horizontal roof stress, (2) surface topographic variations, and (3) geologic anomalies. Effective control of cutter roof was obtained through improved bolting techniques, entry and mine reorientation, and entry and pillar size modifications, but only when selected based on the actual cause of failure.

"The thirteenth annual accident-prevention competition conducted by the Bureau of Mines during the calendar year 1937 was completed with 318 mines and quarries participating. This contest, known as the National Safety Competition, is open to all minas and, quarries employing 25 or more men underground or in the quarry or open pit. The entries are divided into five groups to obtain as nearly as possible uniformity of operating conditions and hazards. The five divisions are: (1) Underground anthracite mines, (2) underground bituminous-coal mines, (3) underground metal mines, (4) underground nonmetal mines, (5) quarries and open-pit mines. A bronze trophy, known as Sentinels of Safety, provided by the Explosives Engineer magazine, is awarded to the winner of each group. The trophy is kept by the winning company 1 year and then transferred to the winner of the succeeding year's contest. Certificates of Honorable Mention are given to plants ranking second, third, fourth, and fifth in each group and to all plants operating without a lost-time accident provided the period of exposure to hazard was not less than 30,000 man-hours. Relative standing in the contest is determined by the contestant's accident-severity rate, which represents the total number of days of employee disability from accidents per thousand man-hours worked by all employees.The 1937 contest was outstanding in that the accident-frequency rate for the contest group as a, whole was the lowest on record. Moreover, with one exception 1934, the accident-severity rate was the lowest ever attained: For frequency, 3S.0 accidents per million man-hours worked; and for severity, 8.2 days lost from accidents per thousand man-hours worked. The rates represent a decline of 62 percent in accident frequency since 1925, the first year of the contest, a remarkable accomplishment both for the contest group and for the purpose of the contest because a majority of the contestants have not only participated during the past year but have been enrolled several years, some enrollments even dating back to 1925."

Methane in coal constitutes a serious hazard in coal mining. Draining the methane in advance of mining can mitigate this hazard, conserve energy, and offer economic benefits. This Bureau of Mines report evaluates the Pittsburgh coalbed in Greene County, Pa., to determine if advance drainage is feasible. The gas content of virgin reserves in Greene County is estimated at 100 to 200 ft3/ton, a total of over 370 billion ft3 of gas in an area approximately 310 mi2. Because of the similarity to natural gas, drained coalbed gas could be recovered and added to pipeline supplies of natural gas. The value of conserved gas would offset the cost of drainage and extend energy resources.

The natural gas-air burner described in this report was designed and constructed to meet the thermal requirements of a convective process for heating steel scrap. This process involved downward combustion of natural gas with air, blending the combustion products with diluent air, and then passing this tempered stream of gases downward through a porous bed of steel scrap contained in the furnace chamber. The scrap would be heated to a temperature limited by the adiabatic flame temperature of the gas stream in a period that depended on the rate at which heat was supplied per unit of bed cross section. The temperature of the gas stream would be limited to that beyond which an objectionable degree of oxidation would occur; for carbon steel this limit had been found to vary from 1,900° to 2,100° F. with the superficial velocity of the gas stream. The productivity of the process was dependent on the rate of heat input per unit of furnace cross section; for the 3-foot-diameter experimental furnace an input of 680,000 B.t.u. per hour was desired. The burner described was designed to meet these conditions of temperature and heat input. It provided for three streams of entering gases: (1) A primary air-fuel mixture too rich to be combustible, that is, above the upper flammable limit; (2) secondary air for combustion of the primary mixture; and (3) tertiary air, principally for cooling the combustion products to the temperatures desired for process operation. Downward combustion of the primary and secondary streams occurred in a flame stabilized on an annular port, while tertiary air flowed in an annular path surrounding the port and also through an axial channel whose wall formed the inner ring of the annular port. This burner performed beyond the designed heat-input rates while producing stable flames, which were adjusted readily to the temperatures desired. Gas-stream temperatures were easily controlled to within 15° F. of the desired value by simple manual adjustment of the flow valves.

The use of radio signals for underground communications was considered as early as the mid-1920's [1] - [4] . However, early experiments did not produce promising results with the type of equipment that was available then [5] . With advancements in solid state technology many of the schemes considered impractical in the early days suddenly became practical. The properties of electromagnetic wave behavior in conducting media have been intensively studied by Wait [ 6] and others and can be utilized not only in communication with trapped miners, but also as a means of locating their position. This report deals with the development of portable electromagnetic equipment, powered by the miner's conventional lamp battery, which can be used to alert surface rescue personnel of the trapped miner Is location. The Westinghouse Georesearch Laboratory (WGL) under BUMINES sponsors hip initially approached the trapped miner location problem using seismic techniques. It was learned from this effort that two serious shortcomings of seismic techniques are (1) the extremely weak signals available on the surface from miner generated hammer blows, requiring long processing times at the surface receiver, and (2) the relatively slow procedure of deploying geophone arrays to sense the seismic uplink signals. By contrast, the electromagnetic techniques have proven much more practical from a deployment time standpoint and in most cases have also proven to be more accurate in determining location. Furthermore, these techniques have been successfully tested using a receiver in a heli- copter for reconnaissance purposes. However, before any electromagnetic location technique can become fully operational, the miners themselves must be equipped with emergency transmitters to be carried with them on each work shift. Consequently, much emphasis has been placed on the development of extremely lightweight transmitting equipment. The performance of some of the electromagnetic location equipment developed by Westinghouse will be described in the following sections. 2.0 Basic Concepts Theoretical concepts for locating magnetic dipoles in the earth have been treated by Wait [ 7] and Olsen [ 8] . Coal mine fires pose a constant danger to the safety of miners and to their livelihood. Underground mine fires pose an added hazard because of the confined environment with remote exits. Enactment of safety regulations [30 CFR2 75 and 771 for under- ground coal mines and surface coal operations has greatly improved the safety of miners. However, mine fires and fire injuries remain serious hazards for all coal mining operations. This report analyzes mine fires and fire injuries for all U.S. coal mining categories (underground coal mines, surface of underground coal mines, surface coal mines, and coal preparation plants) during 1990-1999. Fires involving contractors are also included in the analysis. Similar analyses (for underground coal mines only) by the former U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) were reported by McDonald and Pornroy [I9801 and Pornroy and Carigiet [I9951 for 1950-1977 and 1978-1992, respectively. For comparison purposes, data for 1978-1 992 are mentioned in the "Underground Coal Mine Fires" section of this report. Detailed analyses of mobile equipment fires for all underground and surface coal and metal/nonmetal mining categories during 1990-1999 have recently been reported by NIOSH [De Rosa 20041. Risk rate values (fire and injury risk rates) for the 10-year period (1990-1999) and for five successive 2-year periods within the 10-year period are derived. Risk rate values for individual states for the 10-year period are also derived. Other variables by state and time period include employees&apos; working hours, lost workdays, and coal production (underground and surface coal mines only). The number of fire fatalities is reported by time period. Variables such as ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material are reported by five 2-year periods only. Furthermore, the number of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires has been analyzed by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location. For comparison purposes, the major fire and fire injury findings for all coal mining categories have been reported. The data in this report were derived from "Injury Experience in Coal Mining" [MSHA 1991a, 1992,1993,1994a, 1995a, 1996, 1997, 1998b, 1999c, 20001, "Fire Accident Reports" [MSHA 199 1 b,c; 1994b; 1995b,c; 1998a,c,d,e,f; 1999a,b,d,e], MSHA "Fire Accident Abstracts" internal publications, and verbal communications with mine personnel. Mining companies are required by 30 CFR 50 to report to MSHA all fires that result in injuries and fires that are not extinguished within 30 min of discovery. A small number of fires lasting <30 min without injuries reported in the "Fire Accident Abstracts" have been included in this report. The analysis in this report will provide the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the mining industry with a better understanding of the causes and hazards of mine fires and fire injuries. It will also form a basis for developing future fire research programs.

A survey of the petroleum pipe lines by the Bureau of Mines as of May 1, 1923, shows that on that date there was a total of slightly more than 90,000 miles of pipe lines in the United States, having a capacity of approximately 15,750,000 barrels, which is equivalent to one-fourth of the nation's average production for one month. These lines varied in diameter from 2 to 16 inches, the weighted average being 6 inches. The total pipe-line milenge was about equally divided between trunk lines and gathering lines, though the capacity of the former was about four times that of the latter. This was due, of course, to the difference in average diameter, that for the former being 7.4 inches as compared with 3.7 inches for the latter. The common size for trunk lines was 8 inches, and for gathering lines 2 inches. Oklahora, with 19,180 miles of pipe lines, is the leading State in total mileage, with Texas second and Pennsylvania third. From point of trunk lines alone Texas is considerably ahead of any of the other States, a position which it owes to its size and to the growth in the rovement to its Gulf ports. Cali- fornia, though the leading State from point of production, ranks only seventh in pipe-line mileage. This is due to the fortunate location of the Los Angeles Basin fields, some of which are within sight of the refineries to which their oil is delivered or of the port of San Pedro through which their oil is shipped. The last survey of this nature, made in the spring of 1924 by the U. S. Geological Survey, recorded a total mileage of nearly 83,000 with a capacity of approximately 14,450,000 barrels. This indicates an increase of 9 per cent in both mileage and capacity during the two years.

To find solutions for common safety problems encountered in the handling of trailing cables, based on observations at many different surface mining operations. Approach Practices in handling trailing cables were Investigated through personal visits to over 40 mines, supplemented by visits to cable manufacturers and cable repair service companies. The most effective solutions to the safety problems en-countered were noted and are described In the project final report. Examples are given in this Technology News. Accident Experience Most cable-related injuries occur as a result of workers lifting, pulling, tripping, or being struck by the cable. The Table gives the frequency of occurrence for injuries reported during a recent 3 1/2 year period.
