Laser-based instruments are used in areas where coal dust ignition presents a safety hazard. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory ~NIOSH, PRL! is conducting a study to help determine when an optical beam may be considered a potential ignition source in underground coal mines or coal storage facilities. Researchers conducted experiments to determine threshold igniting powers for Pittsburgh seam bituminous coal dust clouds using an 803 nm continuous wave laser. For fine sized coal dust dispersed in air, concentrations ranging from 600 to 2000 g/m3 were the most easily ignited. A heated layer of coal dust that deposited on the fiber tip during dispersion ignited the dust clouds. Minimum observed igniting powers for laser beams delivered by 200, 400, and 800 mm core fiber optic cables and directed into coal dust clouds were 2.0, 3.0, and 5.0 W, respectively. Threshold igniting power was proportional to beam diameter, and threshold igniting power density decreased with larger fiber diameters. Ignition delay times averaged 0.6 s and did not vary significantly with laser power under initially turbulent test conditions and with flammable targets. Comparisons are made with the results of other researchers.

Beneficiation studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines on three samples of low- grade chromite - bearing material from the Stillwater complex of Montana . The objective of the study was to develop methods for recovering chromite from low- grade materials to improve the domestic reserve situation . Samples were obtained from the three largest deposits in the district , Mouat , Benbow , and Gish . The chromic oxide ( Cr₂ 0 ) content of the ore and of the chromite was about the same in each of the samples . The major gangue constituents ranged from clean olivine in the Mouat sample to such altered minerals as serpentine and talc in the Benbow and Gish samples . Tabling , flotation , high- tension electrostatic separation , and combinations of processes were applied to each ore . Treatment of the Mouat sample ( 9.95 percent Cr₂ 0 ) by high- tension electrostatic separation , a combination of tabling and high- tension electrostatic separation , and tabling with middling retreatment resulted in concentrates that graded 42.8 , 42.0 , and 40.7 percent Cr₂03 at chromium recoveries of 85 , 86 , and 84 percent , respectively . Other techniques were less selective . 2 The Benbow sample ( 7.75 percent Cr₂0 ) responded most selectively to tabling with middling retreatment and a combination of tabling and hightension electrostatic separation to produce concentrates of 40.1 and 39.5 percent Cr₂g with each process having a chromium 2 recovery of 69 percent . Response of the Gish sample ( 8.04 percent Cr₂03 ) to the various concentration techniques was about the same as that of the Benbow sample , but in general , somewhat less selective . A combination of tabling and high- tension electrostatic separation resulted in a concentrate that contained 71 percent The Mouat mine was reopened in 1953 when the American Chrome Co. contracted with the Federal Government to produce 900,000 tons of chromite concentrate . The ore , averaging 20.2 percent Cr₂03 , was treated by tabling to produce a 38.5 - percent Cr₂ O concentrate.

"In the United States there are hundreds of underground and surface (inside and outside) inclines at coal mines on which trips of cars are continually being run with coal, rock, supplies, and men. The safety of the men and prevention of damage to the slopes depend, excluding the personal element of the hoist-man, on the strength and condition of the wire cable, draw bars, and the couplings, and on the links of chains and pins as well. Within a recent period of four weeks there have been two runaway trips, one on the surface and one underground; it seems desirable to call attention of mechanical engineers and others at coal mines to the need for closer and more frequent inspection of the cable, draw bars, coupling links and pins, derailing devices, wheels, brakes, and other parts of cars or trips on which men are hauled on inclines. This bureau has never published anything on this class of accident heretofore.How frequently runaway trips occur is not known. If no serious injury or fatalit has to be reported to the State authorities, a number of such happenings may occur and not be mentioned outside of the immediate vicinity of the mine.Runaway trips can and do result in considerable loss of life, in injuries, and damage, either at or near the place of the break, or throughout a mine by causing an explosion of gas or coal-dust or both, This report is restricted to a study of the mechanical and physical phases of car trip construction and of the metal of couplings and ropes; derailed trips are not included and may be the subject of another paper. There is no need to mention gas accumulations, coal-dust and rock-dusting, open lights, protected power lines, and permissible equipment, because these have all been well covered in Bureau of Mines publications which have been widely distributed and partly or wholly reprinted by others.Most of the items regarding the runaway trips tabulated have been abstracted from reports made respectively by Clarence Hall, W.O. Research performed on computer modeling of mine power systems under USBM Grant G0155003 1S described. The work was performed at the Pennsylvania State University from 5 November 1975 through 4 November 1976. Results presented are interim in nature, and future research is planned to integrate the simulations which have been developed. The thrust of this research has been divided into three main areas. 1. Modification of a previously developed model (Mine Power System Simulation or MPSS) to include interactive operation and the use of default (average) load data. 2. Development of a dynamic simulation of interdependent mine power system induction motors. 3. Development of an approach to modeling of motor shaft loading of induction machines for mining operations. During the course of the current year's research, significant results have been achieved in all areas. Construction of an interactive MPSS model has been completed and checked. This simulation was written in APL code and is fully interactive. In addition, default data representing 158 different pieces of mining equipment has been developed for use with the interactive model. Additional work described includes the construction of a dynamic simulation of interdependent continuous miner induction motors and the development of an approach fo: motor shaft load torque computation from experimental data.

To demonstrate the feasibility of unwatering ore reserves previously indicated in the virgin Melrose zinc-lead field in Kansas and Oklahoma, the Bureau of Mines .carried through a pumping project on the Park Walton farm in 1943. Due to success of the undertaking, attention was turned to exploration of other indicated ore deposits and promising areas within that part of the field benefited by .the drainage project, By the middle of 1946, four private mining companies were active in the field; and a considerable output of lead and zinc concentrate had been obtained from the new Park Walton mine and mill. The Park Walton Ore deposit was unwatered by installing deep-well pumps in three holes previously drilled by the lessee. Pumping was continued by the Bureau of Mines at a rate of 2,500 to 1,000 g.p.m. for about 6 months; during this time the local static artesian water-level, originally averaging 108 feet below the surface in the old drill holes was lowered to the 316-foot level, which justified beginning the initial shaft sinking and mine developments. In all, about 750,000,000 gallons of water was pumped by the Bureau of Mines at an operating cost averaging $0.024 per 1,000 gallons.

This report, dealing with the separation of coal from its associated impurities by means of a pulsater-type jig, continues the series of reports that have been issued by the Bureau of Mines, in which detailed study has been made of the efficiency and mechanism of separating coal and impurities in various coal-cleaning appliances. The previous reports have dealt with the piston jig, coal-washing table, pneumatic table, and Baum-type jig. Such studies of the separation accomplished by any form of concentration device are essential and necessarily preliminary to any intelligent attempt to improve the performance of such equipment Object and Plan The pulsator-type jig was developed recently by G. A. Vissac. Although two articles(2) describing plants using this typo of cleaning unit appeared in 1936, both dealt principally with plant design and layout rather than with plant performance The object of the stork described in this report was to determine the efficiency of the separation made by the pulsator jig on a sized feed, the specific gravity at which the separation between coal and impurity was effected, and the influence of the specific-gravity composition of the coal on the character of the separation made.

"INTRODUCTION The Phelps Stokes iron deposit, also known as the Iron Mountain claim, was examined by G. L. Thompson, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in January 1943. As a result, the Division of Geophysical Exploration 3/ made a magnetorater survey of the deposit in June 1944, and the Mining Branch included it in a,project to explore Nevada iron deposits.The Bureau explored the deposit from September to November 1944 by means of 643 feet of diamond drilling and 445 feet of trenching holes were drilled, all of which penetrated more than: 100 feet of good-grade magnetite, although nearly all the ore except that found in the first hole contained an excessive amount of sulfur. Trenching was done largely over the first two holes, PS-1 and PS-2, and exposed the full width of the ore.The deposit is in Nye County, Nevada, 7.7 miles east of Gabbs. The property was discovered in 1902 was patented in 1907. There has been no production from the property and except for the Bureau's investigation,,has not been, explored since it was patented.Magnetite is the principal ore mineral; it occurs as fine-grained particles associated with sulfides and cemented with talc and calcite."

"INTRODUCTION An electrolytic process for the preparation of metallic cobalt has been developed recently in the Bureau of Mines Experimental Station at Boulder City, Nev. Chemical analysis shows this cobalt to contain impurities in small percentages, chief of which is nickel. It is desirable to be able to determine these impurities spectrographically. This report is concerned with a procedure for the spectrochemical determination of nickel in cobalt.Previous spectrographic work on cobalt was done by Breckpot and Mevis,/ who used the method of homologous pairs of lines. However, it was felt that a more detailed investigation was needed, employing the method of internal standards.ACKNOWLEDGMENTWe are indebted to B. G. According to the annual refinery-capacity survey of the Bureau of Mines, the number of refineries in the United States showed little change in 1940, increasing from 057 the first of the year to 562 at the close. Although a number of plants were dismantled in Texas and other States, more than compensating gains were made in California, Illinois, and other States. Low gasoline prices, competition for crude-oil supplies, particularly in Illinois, and the termination of a favorable distributing arrangement for independent plants in the Los Angeles area, forced about 50 refineries to close down in 1940. The number of operating plants accordingly declined from 461 on January 1, 1940 to 420 on January 1, 1941 and the number of idle plants increased from 86 to 136 in the same period. These developments were also reflected in the capacity data, the operating capacity declining from 4,196,694 barrels daily on January 1, 1940 to 4,180,588 daily on January I, 1941 and the idle capacity rising from 431,952 barrels to 53g8381 barrels in the same period. However, the completed capacity on January 1, 1941 (4,718,969 barrels daily) was 2 percent above the previous year.

Most laboratory sealant studies were carried out in 2.0 inch I.D. Plexiglas tubes of 9.0 inches height containing 4.0 to 4.5 inches reconstructed soil from an 0-8 or 8-16 inch soil horizon at the Lanse site. (When soil was used from the Kato site, the top soil horizon was approximately 0-4 inches. The 4-8 inch horizon was somewhat comparable to the Lanse 8-16 inch horizon.) A 20 mesh Saran or steel screen was placed over the rubber stopper with a bottom drain to a 100 ml measuring cylinder. In some earlier experiments a 1/2 inch bed of 1/4 inch pea-gravel was then added, but in later experiments this was eliminated as it showed no particular utility. Field soil samples collected by a shovel were stored in sealed containers and sieved through a 4 mesh screen just before use. (Moisture content was typically about 25% for A horizon soil and about 20% for B horizon soil.) The sieved soil minus roots was then added in increments of about 1 1/4 inches. Compaction was effected by dropping a weighted ramrod (1-7/8 inches O.D,) five times from a height of two inches. If about twenty tamps were used or if the soil columns were rapped vigorously while water-logged, compaction was high with no detectable percolation. Freezing such samples would then usually cause very slow percolation, e.g. 1-2 ml/day. Using this as a standard procedure, percolation flows were usually stablized after two to three days to rates of about 100 to 200 ml/hour. Percolate was recycled carefully to minimize disturbance of the soil surface. When percolation flows were about 100 to 200 ml/hour, various additives (sealants) were introduced to the moist column in two to three increments to maintain a slight head. Additive concentrations were usually 2-1/2% with some at 5% in earlier experiments. Typical use of 40 ml of 2-1/2% additive corresponds to 4400 lbs/acre. When no more additive was present as supernatent liquid, water washes of about 15 ml were then used several times followed by special additives as needed. More water washes were then used to maintain a head of about 1/2 inch. Percolate was collected in 100 ml cylinders to measure percolation rates in ml/hr. Turbid percolate was evaporated to determine amount of eluted latex. Percolate was sometimes checked for pH by Pan-pH Indicator Paper9,10 reading in 0.5 units. Surface tension measurements were sometimes made by a DuNouy tensiometer10 in experiments using a surfactant for pretreatment.

The Production Profile Program is written for use on a Digital Model PDP 11/70 computer using a Fortran IV level G language. It may be run on any system which uses G level or an upward compatible version of Fortran IV language. Please note, however, that the Model PDP 11/70 for which the program was written is programed to read DEC026 type keypunching. If the user's computer is programed for another type of keypunching it may be necessary to re-keypunch the Production Profile Program. The Production Profile Program uses a fourteen card input. The data must be keypunched according to the layout described in detail in the multiple card layout forms (following). The output from this program must be printed on wide paper, as a full 120 columns are used. The samples of output at the back of this appendix have been reduced for inclusion in this report.

How can employees be stopped from engaging in unsafe work practices? It is often easier to prevent employees from performing unsafe acts through manipulations of the work environment than through various training or motivational programs. Therefore, it is important that accident prevention programs seek to identify the reasons for the unsafe behavior and to redesign tasks and the work environment (e.g., tools, equipment, physical surroundings) in order to remove employees from sources of harm and to prevent situations from arising that would prompt them to perform unsafe acts. Unfortunately, in the mining industry the work environment is often innately hazardous, rapidly changing, and difficult to predict, making it very difficult, perhaps impossible, to fully protect the employee by environmental manipulations. Therefore, it is important that effective methods be identified for influencing mine employees to work safely. Various strategies have been used to convince employees to avoid unsafe acts and/or adopt self protective behaviors. The intent of this article is to provide guidance to mine operators concerning the use of four techniques for influencing mine employees to work safely: (1) employee surveys, (2) incentives, (3) fear communications, and (4) disciplinary actions.

To improve the air quality in large-opening stone mines by developing better ventilation techniques, including appropriate fan selection in conjunction with air-coursing methods. Background Stone mines are the most common underground large-entry mines in the United States. Data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for the year 2000 indicate that there were 162 active nonmetal underground mines in the United States, of which 117 were stone mines. Many underground stone mines are drift mines developed from previous quarry operations. Typically, these room-and-pillar mines have entries that are 20 ft or higher and at least 40 ft wide. These large dimensions lead to a very small ventilating pressure loss, even when significant air quantities move through the mine. This is especially true of drift mine operations where ventilating pressure losses of <0.25 in w.g. are common. Underground stone mines with shafts that are<200 ft deep typically have ventilating pressure losses that are <2 in w.g. The pressure losses through these mines are much lower than those of a typical coal mine or deep metal/nonmetal mine. Therefore, the ventilation techniques and principles are quite different. In addition, because of new MSHA regulations that limit the concentration of diesel particulate matter, these mines may need to greatly increase their ventilation airflow. Therefore, large-opening mines need a fan that can move large air quantities and operate at low static pressures. There are three fan types for mine ventilation: centrifugal, axial vane, and propeller. Centrifugal fans are uncommon in underground stone mines as they are often associated with mines requiring the highest of ventilation pressures. Axial vane fans are widely used in all types of mining operations. They are the most common fan type currently found in underground large-opening stone mines. However, they typically do not operate at low static pressures with high efficiency. Propeller fans are currently uncommon in underground stone mines. They are designed for low static pressures and large air quantities at higher efficiency. This fan type best suits the ventilation needs in large-opening stone mines?they produce large air quantities at low pressure losses. Mines with air shafts<100 ft long and at least 12 ft in diameter have fairly low mine static pressures and may also benefit from propeller fans.

"Platelet activating factor (PAF) can be released from pneumocytes following exposure to occupational dust (Am. Rev. Respir. Dis. 135:83, 1987). In addition, PAF has been shown to induce pulmonary inflammation, edema, and bronchoconstriction (Hosp. Prac. 19, 67, 1983). This investigation reports the effects of PAF on the properties of three types of cells found in the lung. PAF (1-100, K1/2 = 2.5 pH) caused depolarization of neutrophils as well as generation of chemiluminescence and secretion of hydrogen peroxide. These responses were dependent on the presence of extracellular sodium. However, PAF did not alter oxygen consumption of neutrophils. Although PAF (10 uM) caused depolarization of alveolar macrophages, no stimulation of chemiluminestence, superoxide secretion, or oxygen consumption was observed. However, PAF (10 uM). did potentiate chemiluminescence and superoxide secretion in response to zymosan (2 mg/ml) by 55% and 36%, respectively. In addition, PAF (10-90 uM) caused aggregation of alveolar macrophages. PAF (2-10 uM) also caused depolarization of type II cells, but did not affect membrane integrity or oxygen consumption. However, PAF (10-18 PM) enhanced the activities of two distinct forms of cytochrome P-450 in type II cells and caused aggregation of type II cells at PAF doses above 18 uM. These data indicate that PAF can affect the secretory activity of pulmonary phagocytes and the ability• of type II cells to detoxify foreign compounds (Bureau of Mines Grant - G1175142).INTRODUCTIONPlatelet activating factor (PAF) is a glycerophospholipid (1-0-alkyl-2-acetylsn-glycerol-3-phosphoryl choline) which has been shown to Mediate a broad range of biological activities (1-3). Its pulmonary actions include contraction of pulmonary tissue (4), secretion of leukotrienes from leukocytes (5), airway constriction (6), pulmonary edema (7), and enhanced migration of neutrophils into the airspaces of the lungs (8,9).PAF can be released from several different cell types, such as, basophils, neutrophils and alveolar macrophages, in response to a variety of particulates or membrane stimulants which include zymosan, calcium ionophore, phorbol esters, chemotactic agents, and endotoxin (10-13). Therefore, PAP may play an important role in the development of pneumoconioses by mediating pulmonary responses of lung cells to a variety of occupational dusts. To investigate this possibility, we determined the effects of PAF on several physiological parameters of neutrophils, alveolar macrophages, and alveolar type II epithelial cells."

Science involves the study of the nature and behaviour of natural things and the knowledge we obtain about them. Scientific endeavour leads to the unfolding of new knowledge and adjustments to our understanding and our behavior. To indicate that we ‘know’ something may merely mean we do not feel able to, or that we do not wish to, disagree with others who claim to know; or it may mean we have either heard about it, or studied it, or understand part of it, or accept that it is true, or have seen evidence to be convinced of its veracity. What do we ‘know’ about the health effects of vibration? There are many unknowns in the field of human responses to vibration. Not all would agree on what is known and what is unknown. This paper seeks to summarize what we know that we know, what it is sometimes claimed that we know, and what we know that we do not know about the relation between exposures to vibration and our health. It also speculates on what we do not know that we do not know. Hand-transmitted vibration What we know we know We know that exposures to hand-transmitted vibration result in various disorders of the hand, including abnormal vascular and neurological function. Not all frequencies, or magnitudes, or durations, of hand-transmitted vibration cause the same effects. What we may claim to know To enable exposures to be reported and compared, they are ‘measured’ and ‘evaluated’ using defined (e.g. standardised) procedures. This involves identifying what is to be measured and specifying how it is expressed by one (or a few) numbers. Summarising a vibration exposure in a single value involves assuming the relative importance of components within the vibration (e.g. different magnitudes, frequencies, directions, and durations), so standards define ‘weightings’ for these variables. The importance of the weighted values may also be suggested, allowing ‘assessments’ according to a criterion (e.g. the probability of a specific severity of a specific disease). Standards for the measurement and evaluation of hand-transmitted vibration define a frequency weighting and time dependencies that allow the severity of vibration exposures to be assessed and the probability of finger blanching to be predicted 1. What we do not know We do not know that the frequency weighting in current standards reflects the relative importance of different frequencies and axes of vibration in producing any specific disorder. We do not know whether the energy-based daily time-dependency inherent in A(8) reflects the relative importance of vibration magnitude and daily exposure duration. Consequently, the relation between A(8) and the years of exposure to develop finger blanching, as in an appendix to ISO 5349-1 (2001), is not well-founded. We do not know, or at least there is no consensus on, the full extent of the disorders caused by hand-transmitted vibration (e.g. vascular, neurological, muscular, articular, central), or the pathogenesis of any specific disorder caused by hand-transmitted vibration, or the roles of other factors (e.g. ergonomic factors, environmental factors, or individual factors). Future development of the magnetic sludge process should involve optimization of the process variables; these include stirring rate, sludge heating time, aeration rate, method of preliminary sludge dewatering, and the effects of magnetic separation for final sludge processing. In addition, the matter of amenability of coal mine waters to treatment should be considered more thoroughly by means of a more comprehensive literature review as well as actual tests on mine drainage samples. 2. The technique of sludge freezing should be explored further. Emphasis should be given to conservation of energy in the process, and the filtration characteristics of the resulting sludges should be evaluated. 3. Further studies should be conducted on the feasibility of the CO2-addition approach to mine drainage sludge densification. The filtration characteristics of product sludges should be evaluated, and the possibility of recovering and recycling the residual alkalinity of the sludge, either directly as CaCO3 or as CaO plus CO2 after calcination, should also be explored further. 4. Efforts should be made to develop cost data for the conceptual processes involving magnetic sludge formation, sludge freezing, and C02 pretreatment, with the purpose of selecting at least one of these processes for further testing at a field site. 5. The use of inexpensive waste materials (e.g. fly ash, "red dog," slag) as sludge additives, possibly in conjunction with coagulant aids, should be considered further. Results of the present studies have indicated that such materials, employed in relatively large amounts, increase the density and enhance the filterability of sludges from lime neutralization of coal mine drainage. The use of pulverized blast furnace slag in this regard appears particularly promising, and studies should be made to ascertain its availability, relative cost, residual alkalinity, and behavior as an additive in conventional mine drainage treatment processes involving lime neutralization and aeration.
