The new Paradisus Coco Beach Resort in Rio Grande (PR) is located on an old swamp area, which has been filled with relatively clean to silty sands. The swampy deposits consists of organic silts, peat and loose fine to medium sand and silty sand. The project requires the placement of 1.0 to 1.5 meters of additional fill together with the construction of light structures. The need for the fill will trigger the development of settlements in the underlaying weak and compressible stratum. Furthermore, the susceptibility of the loose sand to liquefaction during an earthquake was considered. This paper describes the soil improvement by means of vibro-replacement, the purpose of which was threefold: reduction in total and differential settlement, acceleration of settlements during the surcharge period and densification of the loose sand to reduce its liquefaction potential. The predesign is presented together with relevant construction details of the preliminary trial areas from which the final column diameter and grid spacing were derived. Instrumentation together with settlement observations during the surcharge period are presented as well and compared with the initial predictions.

Dams and highways were built to keep up with the growth of towns and cities, which were bursting at the seams, not just from the returning soldiers settling down with their families but also from the many waves of refugees from war torn areas around the globe.The demand for electricity generation and distribution required for the growing population sparked the expansion of the national power grid with new high-voltage transmission towers appearing across the landscape. However, with an original design life of 50 years, those transmission lines constructed in the 1950s are nearing, or are at the end of, their anticipated service life.In recent years, the Australian power distribution network has changed from a period of high construction activity in greenfield high-voltage lines to a period that is now focused on reducing cost and maintaining existing assets. Replacing aboveground structural members and electrical components is relatively simple even under live conditions. However, the replacement or repair of tower foundations, many of which are in remote locations, has been a problem that has caused difficulties for power utilities trying to operate on a budget while also avoiding costly and unpopular power outages.With thousands of miles of aging transmission lines needing life extension work, Piling & Civil Australia (PCA) has developed a patented system of upgrading the foundations with micropiles while under live-line conditions without requiring costly outages. The system is seen as revolutionary by power utilities, allowing the utilities to extend the life of their existing assets until demand increases to warrant the construction of a new line. PCA has been working on a potential solution with Powerlink Queensland for the past 5 years to develop a quick and cost-effective foundation replacement system that can extend the life of its existing asset base anywhere from an additional 5 years to 50 years.With design support from Quanta Subsurface, USA, PCA recently completed the foundation replacement of 26 lattice tower foundations in the Townsville region of North Queensland. Using a steel bracket (patent pending) to connect hollow bar micropiles to the lattice towers, the installation techniques that were developed enabled the micropiles to be installed within a tolerance of less than about 3/8 in (10 mm) through the existing steel grillage foundation while maintaining live line conditions. The project was an Australian first and a trial by Powerlink for wider use within its network, and it was delivered on time and within budget at one tenth of the cost of traditional methods."

Environmental regulations for noise and air pollution are directly affecting the type of equipment and construction techniques being utilized for pile driving construction using diesel hammers in California and elsewhere. Consequently, the cost of construction is increasing and in some cases, the use of diesel pile hammers has been prohibited. Based on the trend in California and elsewhere in the world, environmental constraints are spreading and becoming more restrictive. The City of Tokyo, Japan, for example has banned the use of diesel hammers. Environmental restrictions on diesel hammers can be satisfied by using modern hammers, clean burning fuels, synthetic lubricants and pre-excavation techniques.

This presentation shows the results of laboratory and field tests to date for the NCHRP project entitled "Downdrag on Bitumen-coated Piles". This project required to test a variety of bitumens in the laboratory to determine their properties and then to establish a field testing program to verify the bitumens effectiveness. Figure 1 shows an organizational chart that gives an overview of the agencies involved in the project. The first part describes the laboratory testing program in which bitumen samples of various types were obtained from a variety of manufacturers. Initially, classification tests were performed to verify the manufacturers' specifications. Additional tests were then developed and performed to determine the bitumens behavior under the various conditions that they may be exposed to in the field. The test results were analyzed and their usefulness for design purposes were determined. The test results are presented in either graphical or tabular form. The second part describes the field testing program which was designed to test the effectiveness of various bitumens under a wide range of soil, temperature, and construction conditions. The first site was in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where a construction project was to take place in the winter of 1989-90. This was ideal for the cold temperature extreme that was needed. The soil conditions were conducive to downdrag problems: an embankment placed over soft clay underlain by dense sand resulting in end-bearing piles. The other site was in New Orleans, Louisiana. The part of the project involving this downdrag study was to be carried out in the summer of 1990. The first reinforced earth railway bridge abutment in China has been successfully constructed of September, 1985 under the supervision of the Reinforced Earth Researth Group of Shanghai Institute of Railway Technology. In order to verify the reliability of the designed structure and its behaviuors, the 1:10 reduced scale model tests in laboratory and field tests on the actual structure during construction were proceeded. Various loads of different positions were charged, the vertical and lateral earth pressure in the filling soil, the stresses developed in the reinforcements, and the deformations of the models or the actual structure were recorded in those tests. The behaviors recorded are presented and discussed in this paper.

The American Petroleum Institute (API) method of predicting pile capacities in sands is reviewed. Factors that influence pile capacity such as soil parameters, pile parameters, loading effects and installation effects are listed. In addition, the simultaneous occurrence of physical phenomena such as grain crushing, pile shaking, stress-redistribution and plugging add to the uncertainty in the prediction model. To better understand the method of prediction, each parameter and the associated uncertainty is revisited. It is evident that these factors are inter­related and sometimes compensating. This discussion also draws attention to the influence that pile installation procedures can have on pile capacities and highlights the need for field experience with various pile installation procedures for designers. In summary, the strength of the method lies in its simplicity and ease of application, but the possible savings generated by an improved method are too substantial to ignore.

Piled raft foundation under uniformly distributed vertical loads has been analyzed using Finite Element Method. The soil is considered to be linear elastic, isotropic, homogeneous. The raft,pile and the soil have been idealized with eight noded brick elements. Parametric study have been carried out varying pile length, soil modulus, raft thickness, and pile spacing. Design charts have been produced to achieve 50% load sharing between pile and raft for optimum design. Data available in literature is compared with the design chart results and found satisfactory.

Further pile load testing has been carried out at Canary Wharf to compare the performance of base grouted and ungrouted bored piles founded in the Thanet Sand. The testing regime included three preliminary test piles and two working test piles. The results of these tests are summarised in Table 1 below. Two of the preliminary test piles were located only 14m apart to compare the performance of a base grouted and ungrouted pile in similar ground conditions. The load/settlement behaviour of these two preliminary test piles are compared on Figure 1. All the piles were drilled under bentonite with a drilling bucket. In the base grouted piles four grouting tubes were placed with the reinforcement cage to within 500mm of the pile toe. After the pile had been concreted these grouting tubes were then extended to the pile base by drilling and packers were installed. Grout was then injected into the four tubes simultaneously.

On the basis of relatively large number of field load tests of piles, the determination of the ultimate bearing capacity have been studied. Using the load settlement curves and the results of the cone or standard penetrat­ion tests, the ultimate bearing capacity was determined by Van der Veen?s, Mazurkiewicz?s and bilinear approximation method. Also, the evaluation of the modulus of deformation and the unit skin friction has been discussed.

Nodular piles is to be piles provided with several nodular projections along the pile shaft, as shown in Fig. 1. Nodular piles are usually installed through either driving method with hammer or preboring method. This paper presents that the bearing capacity installed through each method is considerably higher than that of cylindrical pile without nodules. This paper also proposes the statistically analyzed unique formulae of the bearing capacity of nodular piles.

On August 7, 1986, Barge 45, while being towed near the mouth of the Niagara River, was swept downstream and pinned against one of the central piers of the Peace Bridge. The barge rested against the pier with 125 feet overlying the Canadian border and 50 feet overlying the American border. The tug boat which was towing the barge was lost further downstream. Fortunately, the crew escaped and were rescued with no loss of life. There was serious concern about the potential erosion effects of the river currents on the foundation of the bridge pier as caused by the flow concentrations around the barge structure. Due to the time of year, with the approaching Fall and associated worsening weather conditions, it was imperative that the barge be removed as soon as possible. Donjon Marine of New Jersey, the United States Navy's Atlantic Zone Contractor, was called on to retrieve the barge. By this time the original owner had abandoned the wreck.
