Technological innovations and emerging analytical capabilities are transforming the way drill samples are analysed, with real-time mineralogical analysis made possible. In addition, new business/technical requirements are challenging long standing processes to incorporate more sources of information during planning in order to improve compliance to plan during mining and processing. Unfortunately, the new sources of information that are added do not always have adequate protocols in place to ensure quality data is collected.Spectral data covering the visible – near – short wave – midwave – longwave range are routinely collected by the Geoscience and Exploration department at BHP Billiton Iron Ore for accurate mineralogical identification. These data are used for geological interpretations (logging and modelling) and prediction of physical variables (metallurgical and geotechnical properties).This paper introduces how sampling and quality assurance / quality control concepts have been applied in the spectral data process. The described routine for sampling, data collection/management and reconciliation has been developed to track system precision and accurately and consistently ensure the data is of high quality before it is used across the mining chain.CITATION:Mittrup, D, Dominguez, O and Haest, M, 2017. The surface deformations induced by reservoir dilations can be measured using tiltmeters and these measurements can be used to infer reservoir level volume changes by solving an inverse problem. Preferred approach to solve such an inverse problem is to consider more tiltmeter measurements than the number of unknown variables considered in the inverse problem. However, sufficient number of measurement points is not always available due to economical and practical issues. This paper proposes a new approach to circumvent this problem. The new approach entails generation of pseudo surface deformation data by curve fitting tiltmeter measurements using a mathematical function, which delineates three-dimensional characteristics of surface deformation profiles. Then a three-dimensional inverse problem is solved using pseudo surface deformation data. This method is useful in inferring reservoir volume changes with high areal resolution when the number of available measurements is not sufficient to acquire the desired areal resolution.

The coke analogue is a new research tool that has been developed to quantify and characterize the effect minerals in coke have on coke reactivity. The analogue material is made from a number of different carbon or carbon containing materials and minerals to in part replicate real industrial coke’s reactivity behavior. Elucidation of the effects of minerals on coke reactivity has proved difficult due to the complex and heterogeneous nature of industrial coke and the potential non-additive effects of minerals on coke reactivity. The coke analogue addresses this complexity and heterogeneity through control of its mineralogy, mineral size and mineral dispersion through the analogue, porosity and carbon structures. Initial studies using the analogue were focused on coke dissolution kinetics in liquid iron but recent work has focused in characterization of its porosity, carbon structure and rate of reaction.

The Dugald River lead-zinc-silver deposit is located approximately 60 km north-west of Cloncurry and 87 km north-east of Mount Isa. The development project is expected to turn operational in 2018. The resource is estimated to contain 61.1 Mt at 12.6 per cent zinc, 1.9 per cent lead and 34 g/t silver, with a projected mine life of 25 years. The evolution from exploration project to development project has presented multiple challenges for the technical team. Understanding and modelling the structural complexity of the deposit has been one of these challenges.Historically fault zones were logged as a lithology, with structural measurements recorded in a separate database table. When underground drill programs and development commenced in late 2012, it was recognised the deposit was more structurally complex than had been modelled. The extensive number of fault zone lithologies in core logging, made it difficult to identify fault trends and model faults in 3D software packages.In 2014, a structural project was conducted to produce a fault model for the deposit. The project highlighted that by logging the faults as a lithology, a shortage of fault characteristics was being recorded. Additionally, structural information could not be filtered to identify different fault sets due to the lack of information available to filter on. One of the major outcomes of the study was to change the methodology for the structural logging of drill core.Faults are now logged in a separate structural log. The structural log collects two types of information: interval data and point data. The interval data represents the damage zone of the fault in the surrounding rock and the point data the plane of movement for the fault. The faults are further characterised by their intensity on a scale of one to five, the type of fault structure (fault breccia, fault vein etc), the minerals present on the fault surface and structural measurements when available.The new data set allows fault data to be filtered based on fault characteristics, making implicit and explicit modelling of the faults more timely and accurate. The data set can be used to produce fault wireframes as single surfaces from the point data or hanging wall and footwall surfaces from the interval data. The logging method and how its applied in fault modelling form the focus of this paper.CITATION:George, K, 2017. In many cases, current metallurgical accounting practice does not consider the errors associated with the measurements used in obtaining the metal balance. Considering all measurement errors, including errors associated at each step of the process - from sampling and analytical errors to measurement errors in circuit instrumentation, can improve the accuracy of the final metal balance - assisting in the improvement of process performance, optimisation and control.The consequences of the inclusion of measurement errors on metal balance for different circuit configurations and typical metallurgical accounting practice (two product and three product formulae) will be discussed in this paper.Examples of the tools, methodology of implementation, and periodical metal balance tasks are presented to illustrate the advantage of this approach in meeting the different requirements of each department.CITATION:Brochot, S and Durance, M-V, 2012. In May of 1980, a mine operated by Belmoral Mines Ltd experienced a failed crown pillar, resulting in the death of eight miners and putting sixteen others in harm?s way. The Ferderber mine was located in the Val d?Or region of the province of Quebec in Canada, and had been under development for 19 months and production for 9 months, since the opening of the portal. The crown pillar separating the 1?7 level from overlying overburden ultimately failed, permitting an estimated 1.5 million cubic feet of liquefied sediment to gain entry into the mine. This paper back-analyses the cave-in by applying decision error theory, in an examination of the organizational culture and the collective decisions contributing to the cave-in disaster. A case will be made for a greater understanding of mining methodology, geomechanics and risk assessment when operating in such challenging geologic conditions. Boundary condition and decision (BCD) analysis will be introduced as an innovative new method for the analysis of mine accidents and incidents. It will also be shown that BCD analysis can be applied to any event in an enterprise for which standards, norms or legislation exists. A cognitive profile will be presented that provides insight into the safety ethos existing within the Ferderber mine organization at the time of the tragedy.

Canadian mining research has recently been reinvigorated through a pan-Canadian research strategy driven by the industry, the research community and government departments. These organisations have come together to form the Canada Mining Innovation Council, whose role is to focus and increase mining research in the country. One of the major themes of the organisation is environment; including major research initiatives on energy, tailings and environmental stewardship. Other major initiatives on exploration, mineral extraction and mineral processing will also consider environmental benefits in the research projects they undertake. All the initiatives have their priorities determined principally by the mining and exploration companies, whose first obligation is to determine the long-term research priorities of the industry as a whole, rather than for their individual companies. Only after industry consensus on priorities does the research community become engaged in the implementation of specific projects to address those identified priorities. A goal of the program is to effectively create a virtual mining research laboratory, by engaging all the major research centres in the country. Membership to date includes most of the major mining companies operating in Canada and almost all of the mining-related universities. The Australian economy has been adversely affected by the hesitation in developing countries to commit to the construction of .new coal-fired power stations. World coal trade which was expected to grow at an appreciable rate has stagnated, world export coal prices have plummetted, and facilities in place in Australia for the production and export of coal are being underutilized. While in some countries this hesitation has been caused by a reduction in electricity load growth, another cause has been the unduly long lead-time imposed on developing countries by the conventional "Banker's Approach" to the planning and initiation of commitments to finance and construct coal-fired power plants. In some countries electricity growth has been met by increased usage of indigenous energy resources, even though this involves costs in excess of imported coal-fired power generation. The avoidance of foreign exchange commitments in these cases can however be desirable. In many other developing countries however, fuel oil continues to be used for power generation at a cost in foreign exchange of up to 50% above the total cost of coal fuel plus capital to construct a new coal-fired power station. The conventional "Bankers Approach" to new power station planning imposes the need for successive feasibility studies to satisfy the normal processes of international development lending agencies. No feasibility study can however, show how keen vendor countries may be to win major power plant contracts; and no feasibility study can determine whether the power station eventually procured will be one of the more reliable, at better than 80% availability, or one of the more unreliable at worse than 60% Availability.

A method for hybrid modelling of blast vibrations in time domain is developed. Field seismograms of single shot experiments are combined with computer simulations. In this way firing times of blastholes in a pattern can be optimized due to diverse criteria like maximum velocity amplitude and frequency content of the vibrations.

The Floorgas and Roofgas simulation programs are used to identify strata relaxation zones and their boundaries, to assess active gas sources from coal seams and gas¬bearing rocks and to determine relevant gassiness prediction coefficients for any local longwall. The paper shows that by use of the print-outs from the Floorgas and Roofgas programs the following benefits are achievable: • identification of the shear and gas discharge zone positions in the floor, strata relaxation angles and various gas discharge zone positions in the roof, which are both relevant to local geological and mining conditions • optimisation of cross-measure drainage hole length, location, number and angle of inclination calculation and definition of gas make prediction coefficients such as the release ratio from adjacent coal seams, specific gas emission during longwall extraction and the relationships between gas make, longwall width and coal production levels.

Efficient separation of naturally hydrophobic gangue, such as talc and carbonaceous materials, from sulphide minerals in flotation is becoming a significant challenge in many processing plants due to the need to process lower grade and more complex ores. Considering the hydrophobic nature of these gangue minerals, prefloating them at the beginning of the flotation circuit in the absence of collectors and rejecting the concentrate is a common practice to remove these gangue minerals. However, sulphide minerals, such as chalcopyrite, can become naturally floatable due to surface oxidation and therefore may float together with naturally hydrophobic gangue. In this study, a new approach was developed to maximize the prefloat of hydrophobic gangue while minimizing the loss of sulphide minerals. The new approach introduced a prefloat cleaner stage where sulphide minerals recovered to the prefloat concentrate was depressed and separated from other hydrophobic gangue minerals at a low pulp potential with the prefloat cleaner tailing fed back to the main sulphide flotation circuit. Flotation tests were conducted using chalcopyrite and organic carbon. The results show that the proposed approach can significantly reduce the loss of valuable minerals in the prefloat flotation without affecting the reject of naturally hydrophobic gangue. Applying pulp potential control at the prefloat cleaner flotation stage also reduces the consumption of reducing agents while minimizing the effect of reducing agents on downstream rougher flotation.

Belt conveyors offer a reliable means and often do the most economical job for providing continuous bulk material transport, whenever the terrain permits their installation. The ore processing, construction and mining industries use belt conveyors to carry all types of material, from small to large tonnages. Most of the conveyors Fluor Mining & Metals, Inc. designs for metallurgical plants are in the in-plant category, of limited length and medium tonnages, and use fabric carcass conveyor belting. Belt widths can range from 24 to 60 inches Generally, the layout and design of these belt conveyors present no unusual problems. However, calculations for belt tension and horsepower, design of materials transfers, and the sizings and layouts of belt pulley stations and their drives are time consuming.

Many people are familiar with the use of marine echo sounders which are used by fishermen to monitor water depth and locate schools of fish. Similar technology has recently been used in some West Australian mines to provide detailed maps of ore contacts and other geological structures. Whilst drillhole intersections provide details of the location of a contact at a point, echo sounding can be used to obtain a continuous profile of the contact. A series of profiles together with drillhole intersection data can be used to build a more accurate geological model than can be inferred from drillhole intersections alone. The benefits of this are more complete ore extraction, less dilution and the ability to make more informed financial decisions. This paper presents a case history which demonstrates the successful application of the technology.

WE are approaching the depletion of our principal source of iron ore-the Great Lakes deposits, which have provided 85% of the nation's requirements for the past fifty years. This situation presents a threat to our standard of living and our position as a world power. Fortunately, in the Great Lakes region there are still tremendous quantities of potential iron ore in the form of the low iron, high silica rock called taconite. The economical extraction of iron from taconite will insure our future steel supply if no new deposits available to the United States even in time of war are discovered. In the new process presented here, the iron is reduced directly by a simple method and then separated from the silica. The product is "feed," not to the blast furnace, but to the steel plant. This process requires very much less plant, less physical and chemical treatment, and less fuel and auxiliary materials than the conventional ore concentration-blast furnace method. In my opinion, this new, fundamentally different approach offers a better hope for the solution of the iron ore problem.

INTRODUCTION 1. The application of retreat longwall mining to the North American coal mining conditions is becoming more advantageous as more experience is gained. The productivity results being achieved and potential possible illustrates that this system can be keystone of future underground coal production. 2. In the American coal fields multi-entry is normally practiced as this allows profitable longwall development with existing equipment and systems. Difficulties are being experienced however in the longwall retreat phase by the collapse of multi-entry roadways and excessive use of supplemental support in the following panel tailgates. In some instances the headgate of an operating face can also be in difficulty. 3. Jim Walter Resources Mining Division is developed on a mining plan that calls for three retreat longwalls at each of its four deep mines which have varying depths of cover and immediate roof and floor conditions. The 63 Mine has experienced longwall entry difficulty and there were differing viewpoints with respect to the best development systems to adopt particularily regarding the number of entries and pillar sizes. In an attempt to reconcile these different points of view J.W.R. asked Dr. Wilson to examine the problem and this paper outlines the new approach developed.

Ground anchorage systems in the form of rock bolts are used extensively throughout the world as supporting devices for civil engineering structures such as bridges and tunnels. It is widely recognized that non-destructive testing methods for ground anchorages need to be developed as a high priority [1 ], with only a small proportion of anchorages currently being monitored in service [2]. The condition monitoring of anchorages is a relatively new area of research, with the objective being a wholly automated or semi-automated condition monitoring system capable of repeatable and accurate diagnosis of faults and anchorage post tension levels. The GRANIT tm system developed by the University of Aberdeen is capable of measuring the integrity of ground anchorages and has won two major UK Awards - the National John Logic Baird Award for Innovation in 1997 and a Design Council Millennium Product Award in 1999. The normal procedure with the GRANIT tm system [3,4] is to train a neural network on dynamic response data that has been sampled from an anchorage over a range of post-tension levels. Further data is needed in order to test the neural network. The paper presents neural networks that have been trained on data taken from a number of anchorages on different sites, and the results of the diagnosis of these neural networks on new test data is presented. The results show that the cross-diagnosis of anchorages is possible, where a neural network trained on one anchorage is capable of successfully diagnosing the post-tension level for an anchorage of similar construction, and the high level of accuracy that can be attained with the GRANIT tm technique is shown. The paper also introduces a mathematical model of the GRANIT tm process.

INTRODUCTION The Southern California Rapid Transit District has commenced Preliminary Engineering for an 18 mile Metro Rail Project. This initial line will consist of approximate 36 miles of single track tunnel and 16 subsurface stations. The estimated cost of $1.2 Billion in 1978 dollars, places it in the category of a major public works project. During the planning phase of this project, particular attention was paid to the National Academy of Science Reports, "Better Contracting for Underground Construction" (1974), "Better Management of Major Underground Construction Projects" (1978), and "Management of Urban Construction Programs" (1980). The improved transportation service that this project will furnish the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area will result in significant benefits that will add immensely to the economic well being of the community-which is one of Webster's definitions of improved productivity. RAPID TRANSIT PROJECT BACKGROUND Rapid Transit studies have been going c in the. Las Angeles area since 1925. In 1969 and 1974, sales tax ballot issues were not adopted by the electorate of the county mainly because the pre-ponderous of County voters are outside the City of Los Angeles.

Some of the members will probably ask themselves what close relationship exists between hydro-metallurgy and a wet scrubber, but we are sure that as soon as deeper thought is given to the matter it will be realised how vital scrubbing, operations are in metallurgical plants. In ordinary metallurgical installations or pyro-metallurgical processes ore concentrates are first of all shifted from place to place and dust is created. In other cases the ores or concentrates are crushed or dried or roasted, and in each one of these operations dust and fumes, are created. All suspended particles and fumes originating from the abovementioned conditions not only, in many instances, provide health hazards which disrupt production and endanger the personnel in the plant, but also are the source of economic losses through extra maintenance and wear to moving machinery due to abrasion and corrosion. Further losses are incurred by the waste of fine, very often valuable, components. The Party who once said that in several metallurgical plants the bulk of the profits was discharged into the atmosphere by the stack wasn't stretching the truth. There is a place in Africa where a gold producing concern used to lose over 5 oz. of fine gold per day out of a total production of 3000 oz. per month. In another instance, copper concentrate going as high as 80% Cu was discharged into the atmosphere at the rate of 4 tons per day. Realising the value of removing and collecting solids and fumes created in metallurgical plants, a thorough study was made of the available plant and equipment offered on the market. Some units were found very efficient, but very expensive; some others also very efficient but with temperature and maintenance limitations. Some others were also efficient but prohibitive from the point of running costs.
