The materials containing copper which are refined in the United Statrs, are, for the most part, the natiye noppers of Lake Superior. IJntil quite recently but little pig copper Was made for sale, and that came principally from the pure sulphorous ores of New England and the Sonth, and was generally sdd to reSneries not far from the ore filrnaceu. A stnall aiuoiint found its way into the'niarket which was produced either as the by-product of the treatment of gold and silver ores, or as the result of the treatment of impure copper ores; but both these grades, on account of the impurities they contained, were loolced on with stlspicion, and were not sought for. A11 the grtlGis of pig coppcr are sold by the unit of oopper contents, a great redtiction being made in the price when impurities are present. There are at the present time only three works which treat native copper, the two of the Detroit and Lake Superior copper Company, and the works of C:G. Hussey & Co., in Pittsburgh. There are a few works ivhich smelt sulphuroris ores and refine their pig; bo sides these t1le1-e arc a few siuall works where gig copper is refined uuly. Some of these purcIlase blscir copper, refine scrap, or simply refine such grades of ingot copper as are found in the market, but nlostly that from Lake Superior, for the purpose of getting it into swh shapes that can be handled cpmtriercially to advantage, such as in making large plates or high grades of wire fir electrical purposes. Up to the time of the discovery of the mines on Lake Superior, only a very small quantity of native copper had ever been foond, not sufficient to justify the erection of worlrs fbr its special treatment. With significant vibration control and fragmentation challenges facing them, the CBS quarry (department of the Nord) successfully integrated a technical partner and mine to mill optimisation to deal with a difficult environment. For the last three years, CBS has been conducting a global production monitoring program similar to the mine to mill concept used in the mining industry. This concept consists of optimising the drilling and blasting while monitoring the effects on the downstream chain (vibration control, loading, hauling, crushing, plant output). Blast optimization is ensured by systematic control of the blast geometry (volumes, patterns, bench and face anomalies, drill deviation) and by the use of constant specific energy blasting. Constant specific energy optimises the work of the explosive in a blasting operation and, when combined with a high accuracy programmable electronic blasting system, reduces the impact of blasting on the environment and enhances blast performance. These techniques ensure consistent blasting results and hence improved site productivity. The improvements achieved have been identified thanks to an effective system designed to monitor the key production parameters.

The Multi-Flow Evaluator (MFE) is a new system of tools providing an original approach in drill-stem testing. It improves control during the testing operation and gives a more accurate evaluation of the fluid recovered while providing additional pressure information for reservoir analysis. The tools are operated entirely by up and down motion of the drill stem. This up and down operation provides a positive means of control and offers easily observed surface indications of tool operating position. An unlimited number of shut-in and flow periods may be taken with this tool while in the hole. The key to the success of the MFE system of tools is the safety seal packer. Until this development, operation of the tools by up and down motion only had proven unreliable. The success ratio of the MFE now exceeds the ratio achieved by conventional tools. The equipment includes a 2,750-cc chamber in which a representative sample of the flowing formation fluid is trapped at the end of the last flow period and brought to the surface under pressure. The sample can be evaluated at the wellsite or transferred under pressure for laboratory analysis. The sampling feature of the tool allows a sample to be obtained from a reservoir which has suffered minimum influence from production. A representative sample can be obtained for laboratory or empirical analysis by employing a testing technique to minimize drawdown during flow periods. Interpretation methods to take advantage of this additional information are presented and supported by actual field examples. INTRODUCTlON The Multi-Flow Evaluator (MFE) represents the most recent technical advance in formation testing. Drill-stem testing techniques prior to the MFE have been limited in three areas—(1) operaiion, (2) recovery analysis, and (3) reservoir analysis. The tools in the MFE system allow maximum control during testing and provide test information superior to that obtainable with conventional tools. As a part of a wartime program to aid in the development of known ore bodies and in the discovery of hitherto unknown deposits of strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of diamond-drilling the Christmas copper deposit, in Gila County, Ariz., to increase the reserves of milling ore. Upon recommendation of the examining engineer, drilling was begun in September 1942, from the bottom (770) level of the mine. One month later, in cooperation with the Bureau, the Federal Geological Survey started geologic mapping of the mine workings. Since extensive and costly development would be required, the War Production Board concluded that ore below the bottom level could not be mined at that time because of the wartime shortages of equipment and man-power. In January 1943, drilling was moved to the 300 and 400 levels to locate reserves readily accessible for continued production of fluxing ore. This drilling, which was under the supervision of L. G. Marshall, was completed in January 1944.

A homely simile will serve to epitomise an interpretation of the rock structures and associated phenomena of the block of country under review, as it appears to the writer.Disregarding the many thousands of feet of overburden that have been eroded away during the ages, the present denuded surface and rock systems below may be pictured as a slab of some titanie ribbon cake that has suffered much damage from rough handling and exposure, yet retaining much of the original symmetry of its superimposed layers of variegated colour and texture.Lateral pressure has crumpled the cake into a series of irregular corrugations and, in parts, has caused some of the layers to crush and slide over their neighbours.Following upon this squeeze, the cake has been severed into segments and rhomboidal slabs by vertical cuts, and these portions have been severely jostled one against its neighbour, crushing the faces of contact and dragging the contiguous layers in the direction of movement.The variegated icing of the cake is represented by intercalated sills of amphibolite, pegmatite, and aplite, and the body of the cake by highly altered sedimentary rocks.The icing has been assailed by the rats of erosion with such effect that only residuals of the original structures remain. The body of the cake has suffered successive waves of igneous invasion in the order of lode pegmatite, followed by zine, iron,copper, and finally by silver-lead. These successive invaders found difficult access, along certain of the vertical cuts, to the more succulent layers of the cake, where, gorging to repletion, many were imprisoned and entombed for the future service of mankind.

"The most important metals in the jewelry sector are undoubtedly gold and silver. As a result of workmanship work done in the jewelry industry, the tiny metal and jewel fragments and metallic powders are scattered. Given the prices of gold and silver on the market, the dust that emanates from these workshops is of great importance. Gold recycling has become as important as raw material production within the mass market and gold production industry. In 2016, 29% of the world gold supply has been obtained through recycled gold production. Waste derived from jewelry activity is included in this category, and represents an essential component of this percentage. In the scope of this study, the recovery possibilities of Au and Ag from jewelry sweeps floor sample was investigated using flotation method. In the experiments, optimum pH value, particle size, the effect of dispersant, type and amount of reagent were investigated. As a result of these studies, it was determined that the optimum pH value was 6.5 and the particle size was -212 microns. It was observed that the most suitable reactive combination was Aero 242 and Aerophine 3418A and Na2SiO3 has no positive effect on recovery of Au and Ag as a dispersant agent. As a result of tests, a final concentrate containing 268 ppm Au and 2122 ppm Ag was obtained with 81.4% and 74.5% recovery respectively. INTRODUCTION Because of the softness of pure gold, it is usually alloyed with base metals for use in jewelry, altering its hardness and ductility, melting point, color and other properties. On the other hand, gold has some special chemical properties which in normal conditions, don’t react with water, dry or humid air, oxygen, ozone, nitrogen, hydrogen, fluorine, iodine, sulfur and hydrogen. In these days, gold is used in different sectors like jewelry, electronics, finances and investing, dentistry, medicine, aerospace, awards & status symbols. According to Deutsche Bank Research, the primary usage of gold is jewelry. It has been used to make ornament and jewelry for thousands of years. In this sector craftsmen learned that alloying gold with other metals like copper, platinum and silver to increase gold’s durability. Alloying gold with other metals changes the color of the products. Another significant sector of gold is electronics. Modern electronics want the use of noble metals, like gold, especially in the areas of information processing, telecommunications, and military and space electronics (Habashi, 1997). Electronic devices use very low voltages and currents which are easily interrupted by corrosion or tarnish at the contact points. Gold is the highly efficient conductor that can carry these tiny currents and remain free of corrosion. Electronic components made with gold are highly reliable. Gold is used in connectors, switch and relay contacts, soldered joints and connecting wires. Every sophisticated electronic device have a considerable amount of gold. This includes cell phones, calculators, personal digital assistants, GPS units, and other small electronic devices. Most large electronic appliances such as television sets also contain gold. Humankind has known silver since prehistoric times like gold because silver occurs in native form. The metal is found in the Earth's crust in the pure, free elemental form native, as an alloy with gold and other metals, and in mineral such as argentite. Most silver is produced as a byproduct of copper, gold, lead, and zinc refining. Silver is very soft metal like gold also, it is the highest electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and the lowest electrical contact resistance of all metals (Habashi, 1997). "Abstract - The Little Falls member of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation is situated in the northern part of the Brunswick Belt of the Bathurst Mining Camp and has been interpreted as the distal equivalent of proximal tuffaceous rocks that host the stratiform Brunswick No. 12 and No. 6 Pb-Zn massive sulfide deposits. It comprises fine-grained, greenish-gray tuffaceous sandstone in the lower part, and coarse-grained, crystal-rich tuffaceous sandstone in the upper part. Petrographic evidence suggests that these rocks have a turbiditic origin. The Little Falls member is underlain by the Vallée Lourdes member, mainly composed of relatively shallow-water calcareous rocks, and is conformably overlain by Mn-rich sedimentary rocks, mainly red argillites that host the Tetagouche Falls Mn-(Fe) deposit. All these rocks are considered to belong to the Nepisiguit Falls Formation, part of the Ordovician Tetagouche Group. Whole-rock geochemical data from the fine-grained tuffaceous sandstone and coarse-grained tuffaceous sandstone indicate that the two units of the Little Falls member are distinct. Zr and TiO2 contents, and total rare earth element (REE) values are higher in the coarse-grained unit (average Zr/TiO2 = 0.040, average SREE = 247 ppm, n = 6) than in the fine-grained unit (average Zr/TiO2 = 0.048, average SREE = 158 ppm, n = 17), which can be attributed to the variation in crystal content between the two units. Both units are HREE-enriched and have elevated La/Yb relative to the typical Nepisiguit Falls Formation. Overall, the geochemical data combined with evidence from the bounding units suggest that the Little Falls member was deposited in relatively shallow water, possibly in a near-arc environment. The relationship of volcanic facies within the Nepisiguit Falls Formation and the geochemistry of these facies indicate strongly that fine grained, reworked tuffaceous rocks, regardless of whether they are the distal equivalents of proximal tuffaceous rocks, are not associated with the major ore-bearing horizons of the Bathurst Mining Camp. A Seam deposit User oriented Mine Planning System (SUMPS) was developed by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) at its head office in Melbourne. It is one of the computer mine planning systems developed by the Corporate Data Processing (CDP) section of BHP. To date it has been employed in the feasibility study of four coal prospects for the BHP Group, including Gregory in central Queensland û Ham and Van Hoorn (1978). It was also used in detailed short term mine planning for Gregory. A recent application was in the feasibility study of Saxonvale, a multi seam coal deposit in New South Wales with seams up to 20 m thick. The other two applications of SUMPS were also on thick multi seam coal deposits. Development of programs for the underground subsection of SUMPS is continuing. SUMPS was developed and implemented on mini computers with graphics and plotting peripherals. The company's philosophy towards computing is one of centralized development and project planning, with transfer of hardware and software to site once the mine becomes operational. Support of the site's system continues from head office which is continually involved in development of SUMPS and issuing revision updates to sites. The users, as well as programmers, were mostly geologists and mining engineers. This helped to ensure rapid, successful implementation. The broad approach of this system was to use interactively the specialist skills and interpretative abilities of the user mining engineers and geologists with the data manipulation abilities of the computer. It is an integrated system which covers geological exploration, deposit modelling, mine planning and production scheduling. An important feature of the system is that the user has full interactive control over each function through a graphics terminal where applicable.

There were 63 fatalities in the California petroleum industry in 1929, the largest number in any year since 1923 and an increase of 34.0 per cent over 1928, when 47 men lost their lives in the drilling, producing, manufacturing, and marketing divisions of the industry. It will be observed from the accompanying chart that after following a consistent decline for 4 years, the fatality curve turned upward in 1923 and advanced sharply in 1929. Although this increase in fatalities coincided with a period of intensive development it tends to indicate some laxness in the industry during a period of increased hazards. Intensive drilling campaigns are usually started hurriedly and conducted with a great demand for speed, and the result is that accident-prevention work is too often relegated to a position of minor importance.

Video techniques for monitoring exposure, such as NIOSH’s “Helmet-CAM,” employ both real-time dust monitors and mobile video cameras to assess workers’ respirable dust exposures. Many real-time personally worn dust monitors utilize light scattering sensing elements, which are subject to measurement biases as a function of dust type (size, composition, shape factor) and environmental conditions such as relative humidity. These biased and inaccurate dust measurements impair the monitor’s ability to properly represent actual respirable dust concentrations. In the testing described, instrument mass concentration data was collected using three different types of commonly used commercial off-the-shelf personal dust monitors and compared to a reference standard. This testing was performed in a calm air (Marple) dust chamber in which three units of each make and model (for a total of nine monitors) were used for each test. Equivalency factors (EF, a multiplier to match the Thermo TEOM 1400a reference instrument) ranged between 0.746 and 1.879 across all dusts and environmental conditions tested, and between 0.821 and 1.519 on the ISO test dust.

The overall injury experience, excluding officeworkers, at metal mines and mills during the period 1961-63, reported by operators, was 174 fatal and 11,357 nonfatal disabling work injuries during an aggregate worktime of 451 million man-hours. These injuries occurred at a frequency rate of 25.55 per million man-hours, comprising 0.39 for the fatal and 25.17 for the nonfatal injuries. The combined severity rate of the disabilities was 3,779 days lost or charged per million man- hours, consisting of 2,314 for the fatal and 1,465 for the nonfatal injuries. The average severity of all disabilities during 1961-63, was 148 days per injury. The number of days lost and/or charged, ex- cluding officeworkers, at metal mines and mills during the period 1961-63, was 1,440,000 days charged to fatal injuries and 661,290 days lost from nonfatal injuries. An average of 70,966 men were at work daily. The outstanding cause for fatal injuries was the fall of rock or ore from the back, while most of the nonfatal injuries were caused by handling materials, slips or falls of persons, machinery, falls of rock or ore from back and side, and haulage. Injury experience at primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants during 1961-63, excluding officeworkers, was 23 fatal and 3,214 nonfatal disabling injuries during a total work- time of 277 million man-hours. The injuries occurred at frequency rates of 0.08 per million man-hours for the fatalities and 11.61 for the nonfatal disabilities. The severity rate for all injuries of 1,085 days lost or charged per million man-hours comprised 498 for fatal and 587 for nonfatal injuries. The number of days lost, excluding officeworkers, at primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants during 1961-63 was 138,000 from fatal injuries and 162,385 from nonfatal injuries, An average of 34,938 men were at work daily an active plant days during the three year period. The injury experience for officeworkers at metal mines and mills during the period 1961-63 was 20 nonfatal disabling work injuries, (there were no fatal injuries reported), during an aggregate work-time of 28,694,244 man-hours. These injuries occurred at a frequency rate of 0.70 per million man-hours. There were no fatal injuries reported for officeworkers at non-ferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants during 1961-63, but seven nonfatal injuries were reported during an aggregate work-time of 30,814,772 man-hours. The frequency rate for these injuries was 0.23 per million man-hours for this period.

The design and engineering of flotation circuits is driven by numerous inputs, including (in no particular order) testwork outcomes, site considerations, type of separation required, energy sensitivity of the flotation response, personal experience and preference for flotation machines, maintenance access requirements, operability, level of automation and capital constraints.This paper discusses these and other issues in the Australian context and covers the flotation of copper/gold ores and polymetallic (copper/lead/zinc) ores. "12.1. NO DEPRECIATION/GAAPAll calculations and computations relating to the Royalty shall be carried out in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles consistently applied to the extent that such principles are not inconsistent with the provisions of this Schedule and the agreement attached hereto, it being specifically agreed that nothing herein contained shall permit, or be construed to permit, the Operator to deduct any amount for depletion, depreciation, amortization or any deduction that represents a non-cash outlay.Comment: In cases like net profit royalties where recoupment of prior expenditures is permitted, care should be taken to avoid any implication that depreciation may also be taken. It is only logical and equitable that Property Owners should not be permitted an apparent ability to “double dip” with respect to deductions. A provision like this example should accomplish the task. It will be noted that the example specifically contemplates that the negotiated arrangements will prevail over any requirements of GAAP. Accordingly, if the parties agree to an unusual formula for recoupment, it will not be set aside to accommodate GAAP requirements. Under GAAP, revenues and expenditures are accounted for on an accrual basis. In addition, it specifically prohibits the taking of non-cash deductions, which is in keeping with the concept of recoupment.Although in some ways the example states the obvious and could be considered redundant, its presence, especially in provisions contemplating recoupment, makes it clear to the financial people that there may well be some variations from normal practices dictated by GAAP, while at the same time confirming the availability of GAAP to fill any voids.The accounting profession often makes the caveat that application of GAAP is an “art”, not a “science”. GAAP do not provide a cure-all and can create problems that will have to be addressed. For example, GAAP contemplate that asset costs are to be reduced by investment tax credits, which can cause a problem for a payor with more than one mine."

This article explores the Fray Farthing Chen (FFC) Cambridge process, a novel method for the electrochemical deoxidation of metal oxides in molten salt, discovered at the University of Cambridge in 1997. The process was hailed as a highly promising, potentially low cost, novel method for the production of titanium metal direct from its oxides. The article should inform researchers in the field of some of the challenges in the commercialization of a novel, high profile process involving multiple stakeholders. The author, former senior process engineer at British Titanium Plc, the company originally tasked with commercializing titanium production via the FFC Cambridge process, reviews the latest literature and discusses past and present progress in the pursuit of low cost titanium metal via this process. Surface mining and reclamation of a southeastern Ohio site with sandstone-shale overburden resulted in (as compared to premining levels): 1) runoff volumes and peak rates that increased by a factor of from 2 to 10 during mining and after reclamation, 2) destruction of the "aquifer" perched on the underclay of the mined coal bed and gradual, but, as yet incomplete redevelopment of this aquifer after reclamation, 3) no immediate effect on another, lower perched "aquifer", 4) up to 100 times greater sediment concentrations in runoff. Results were influenced by increasing annual precipitation amounts through the period of record; 1978, 1979, and 1980 (postreclamation years) experienced precipitation amounts approaching or exceeding long-term normalcy for the area. Part of the reason that the site produced more runoff after reclamation than before mining is that the premine condition was one of an open, porous soil under woodland, while the postreclamation condition was one of a compacted, bulldozed soil. Sediment concentration results were influenced by failure of the postreclamation erosion control system and by a series of detention reservoirs above the stream monitoring station.
