The Shiloh Church deposit is a very significant molybdenum occurrence in an ususual, perhaps unique, geologic environment. Work done to date indicate that several million tons of "ore" may be present, occurring as a matrix in limestone and dolomite breccias. Mineralized rocks cored to date are at or near the surface and the deeper resource potential has not been tested. The prospect is located in Polk County, north- western Georgia (Fig. 1). The "ore zone" was outlined by North American Exploration, Inc. (NAE) using geochemical prospecting techniques. Extensive geological work, including core drilling, has been conducted on the properties, together with geochemical and geophysical surveys. The geology, geochemistry and geophysics of the prospect are discussed. It is hoped that these data can be used to formulate exploration programs in similar terranes located elsewhere in the eastern U.S.A.

The value of U.S. mineral raw material output reached a record $63.1 billion in 1975. This high exceeded the 1974 value of $55.2 billion by 14 percent. Among the three major mineral categories -fuels, metals, and nonmetals -only fuels showed an increase in value. Both the metal and nonmetal categories showed declines in value. The significance of this nearly $63 billion mineral output can be noted in the fact that it is the basis for the subsequent production of over $270 billion a year in energy and processed materials. Of the 78 individual mineral commodities included in these 1975 totals, only 17 registered gains in output, while 45 registered value increases, reflecting higher prices.

This Bureau of Mines report describes several significant problems associated with absenteeism among underground coal miners. The vast empirical literature on employee absenteeism is reviewed, and a conceptual model of the factors that cause absenteeism among miners is presented. Portions of this model were empirically tested by performing correlational and multiple regression analyses on data collected from a group of 64 underground coal miners. The results of these tests are presented and discussed.

Some design and feasibility studies have been made into possible methods of economic recovery of sulphur from smelter gases emitted at Western Mining Corporation's Nickel smelter at KalgoorIie in Western Australia. The smelter discharges some 330 000 tonne/yr of sulphur dioxide in a stream of approximately 6 per cent by volume of S02.Three possible recovery methods have been considered:1. The manufacture of sulphuric acid using the contact process.2. The concentration of sulphur dioxide to a pure form using dimethyl aniline as an absorbing medium.3. The reduction to elemental sulphur using natural gas as the reducing agent.Design studies were carried out by final year chemical engineering undergraduate students at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1981 under the supervision of the author and other teaching staff of the chemical engineering department. These studies indicate that sulphuric acid manufacture is the economically preferred recovery route.Markets for sulphuric acid include several potential mineral processing applications and the established fertiliser industry.Sulphuric acid is currently manufactured in a number of plants located at coastal regions of Western Australia using imported sulphur. The sulphuric acid is then used for superphosphate or titanium dioxide pigment manufacture at adjacent plants.The possibility is considered of manufacturing superphosphate at Kalgoorlie from locally produced acid obtained from the smelter gases and from phosphate rock railed to the site from the coast. The advantages of such a scheme include improved scale and technology of operation compared with some existing coastal operations, use of a waste material to replace imported sulphur, and avoidance of costs and hazards associated with railing large quantities of sulphuric acid.

This digital peer reviewed publication has been created as a vehicle for the sharing of technical information related to the science and technology of precious metals. Since 1976, the International Precious Metals Institute has championed the exchange of information of critical importance to the precious metals scientific and commercial communities through its various communications vehicles. This has included instructional videos, annual conference symposia, special topic committee meetings, regional seminars, and professional and student achievement awards. Due to the breadth of important topics related to all aspects of precious metals, it has been the vision of the IPMI to provide a publication available to the general public that would become a key source of pertinent topics containing high quality publications by experts in their fields of study. Historically, the IPMI has attracted world renowned experts in many fields (including Nobel Laureates Henry Taube, Ei-ishi Negishi, Robert Grubs, Professor Ben Feringa, and David MacMillan) in the dissemination of discoveries, inventions, and industry proven practices. Such information has a total value greater than the sum of its parts as seemingly unrelated innovations from distinct focus areas can be adapted to solve problems. Because of this important characteristic of information exchange, we have decided to create a digital journal, available to the general public, that will not only communicate state of the art discoveries and sound practices, but will also review historical communications from the IPMI’s archives that have value and use even in today’s environment. Section 15 covers a loose collection of topics that involve water in some way. The chapters in this section include Dredge and Placer Mining (Chapter 15.1), Solution Mining: Surface Techniques (Chapter 15.2), and Solution Mining: In Situ Techniques (Chapter 15.3). The dredge and placer systems involve water in several forms. The segment on hydraulicking or hydrosluicing discusses the use of monitors to direct high-pressure water jets to move material. As such, this represents an alternative to mechanical breakage, loading, and hauling. This chapter also covers placer mining (except dry placering) where the water provides the medium that promotes the separation of minerals based on their density and other settling characteristics. Thus placer mining is generally limited to concentration of gold, tin ore, diamonds, and other heavy minerals that are already liberated and are contained in a less dense matrix. The third topic, straight forward dredging, as in sand and gravel operations, involves water only in an incidental way. Here water simply covers the minerals of interest. Thus the dredging system need only lift a payload from the submerged location to the surface for further processing or handling

This preliminary bulletin was written as the first of a series of several on the significance of drafts in steam-boiler practice, the succeeding bulletins to be along the same lines but of a more advanced character. The conclusions arrived at are tentative, and are the result of a study of one of the many problems growing out of a general plan of the United States Government to increase the efficiency with which the coals of the country are being used. Greater efficiency requires better boiler and furnace design. The experimental study of drafts on which the conclusions presented in this bulletin are based formed part of the fuel-testing investigations that were carried on by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey and have been transferred to the Bureau of Mines. The experiments made seem to indicate that it is possible to double or treble the capacity of a plant without making any radical changes the furnaces and boilers. These increases require about double and treble the quantities of air to be put through the fuel beds and boilers. It also seems probable that rebafHing the boilers will often permit the capacity to be doubled or trebled, while still getting more steam than formerly per pound of coal for uses outside the boiler room. These experiments were undertaken with the object of clarifying ideas concerning the passage of air through fuel beds and boilers. Measured weights of air were passed through two beds of lead shot, series, one of which remained always the same and represented a boiler; the other being varied as to size of shot and depth of bed, and representing a fuel bed. Careful observations were made of the weight of air passing through the beds per minute. All data were plotted in many charts, so as to permit the study of them from several points of view. A number of laws were deduced bearing on the relative amounts of power required to force air through fuel beds of various thicknesses, composed of various sizes of coal, and through boilers of various lengths and areas of gas passages. An important part of the discussion relates to an increase in the capacity of boilers by increasing the amount of power applied to pressure and exhausting fans and thus forcing several times as much air through the fuel beds and boilers. may be possible, as a result of these investigations, to raise the rate of working the boiler heating surface to three or even four times its present value. Such an increase would undoubtedly mean new designs of grates, stokers, furnaces, and boilers, especially fitted for high rates of working. Fan equipments designed to supply three or four times as much air under several times the pressure would be provided with more efficient engines, thus giving an additional factor favoring high-capacity working. It must be borne in mind, as stated above, that the results are tentative. It will cost money to force gases at high speeds through fuel beds and boilers, and there will soon be pressing need of such quantitative data as will enable the largest possible part of the energy imparted by the fans to be advantageously utilized. This study of the tin-tungsten ore of the Shepherd and Murphy Mine, in central northern Tasmania, was originally undertaken at the request of the Moina Tungsten-Tin Mining Co., N.L., as part of the research programme of the Mineragraphic Investigations Section of the C.S.I.R.O. It is based on the examination of a suite of specimens supplied by the management, supplemented by a more extensive collection and observations made by the author during a short visit to the mine in October, 1956.The Shepherd and Murphy Mine is at Moina, 36 miles S.W. of Devonport and 22 miles from Sheffield, the nearest railway station. It was worked almost· continuously from 1893 to 1919, when a fire destroyed the mill; to that date it had produced concentrates to the value of £141,000. After a long period of idleness, the mine was re-opened by the present company, but it has been announced recently that unfavourable market conditions have again forced closure.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe mine is on a deeply dissected plateau, about 2,500 ft. above sea level; it lies between the Iris and the Forth Rivers, whose valleys are deep gorges cut to about 400 to 600 ft. above sea level. From Moina westwards to the Iris River, a limestone regarded as part of the Gordon River Group, of Ordovician age, conformably overlies a sandstone containing tubicolar casts which are circular in cross section, half an inch in diameter and up to two feet long, and which resemble marine worm burrows (Elliston, 1953).

SRC rockmass classification have been applied to 25 tunnels in Spain and Italy, for which it was found that much heavier supports than those estimated by the RMR index were required. SRC and RMR indices and other relevant geomechanical data were obtained during the site investigation and construction stages. Data corresponding to in situ stress measurements, analysis of tectonic structures, and instability problems arising during construction were used to asses the state of stress. The relationship between tunnel section convergence and the SRC and RMR indices was also analysed. Support measurements based on SRC and RMR classification were compared with those actually used during construction. These analyses indicate that for most of the tunnels examined, supports estimated using the SRC were much closer to those actually installed than those predicted by the RMR index. Bei der Verwendung des SRC-Systems zur Klassifizierung des Gesteins als Baugrund für 25 Tunnel in Spanien und Italien wurde festgestellt, dass viel schwerere Abstützungen benötigt wurden, als wenn die Beurteilung anhand des RMR-Systems angefertigt würde. Die Klassifizierung anhand des SRC- und des RMR-Systems, sowohl als auch andere wichtige geomechanische Daten wurden während des Ablaufs der Erkundungen und der Bauausführung gewonnen. Die Resultate der Messungen der Spannungen vor Ort, die Analyse der tektonischen Struktur und die Stabilitätsprobleme während der Bauausführung wurden dazu verwendet, um den im Felsgrund vorherrschenden Spannungszustand zu definieren. Das Verhältnis der Messungen der Tunnelkonvergenz zu dem SRC- und RMR-Index wurde auch analysiert. Introduction It is believed that the present paper will be of some interest, not because of any outstanding features of Renabie milling practice but because Renabie is the first gold mining property in a newly explored area - in Leeson and Rennie townships, Sudbury district, Ontario - to reach the production stage. The Renabie mill was originally designed by the General Engineering Company (Canada), Limited, as a 300-ton plant and went into operation in June, 1947, treating an average of only 128 tons a day for the balance of that year. Toward the end of 1948 the capacity of the plant was expanded to 450 tons a day, and the tonnage treated was gradually increased from the 1947 figure to the point where 420 tons a day was averaged for the first nine months of 1949. Description of Ore In general, the outstanding gangue component of Renabie ore is white quartz, which comprises at least 80 per cent of its total bulk and in some sections considerably more. Virtually all the gold occurs in very finely divided state; only very rarely has free gold coarser than 325 mesh been observed. The ore has a very low sulphide content, ranging from about 0.50 to 1.00 per cent by weight. The gold occurs both free in the gangue and ? locked in sulphides, the proportion of one to the other varying considerably from one orebody to the other. Pyrite is by far the most abundant sulphide, followed by galena, which, however, appears to be entirely absent in some of the orebodies. Minor amounts of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, and sphalerite have been noted. The ore appears to be entirely free, or almost so, of minerals containing arsenic, antimony, or molybdenum, and in general it could be described as free milling. The various hindrances to extraction of the gold which have been met with are believed to be due largely to the very finely divided state of the metal and to its intimate association with the sulphides and gangue. The ore contains silver, with the gold-silver ratio about 3:1.

The papers contained herein summarize results of various recent Bureau of Mines investigations in the area of mine power distribution systems. They are based on information from Bureau personnel, contractors and grantees, and Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration. Conclusions drawn from a series of parameter measurements on mine power systems, taken over a 3-year span, are presented. Personnel and equipment hazards due to faults on isolated, solidly grounded, and resistance grounded three-phase systems are discussed. Two papers cover dc applications of circuit breakers, including a novel protection scheme for trolley lines. The methods of suppressing induced arcing currents and voltages in a-c machines are evaluated. An evaluation program for ground monitors is described. Acceptance test procedures and the importance of various paparameters for trailing cable splice are covered. A number of techniques for locating faults in trailing cables are described.

Coal mining in the United States, had a somewhat higher death rate per million man-hours of exposure among the employees in 1937 than in 1933 to 1936. However, the rate in 1937 was lower and therefore more favorable than that in any year since 1921 but previous to 1933. The nonfatal injury record, which began in 1930, was lower and therefore better in 1937 than in any other year since 1930. Separate figures covering bituminous-coal mines in all States showed a lower fatality rate in 1937 than in any year since 1920 but before 1933, and a lower nonfatal injury rate than that of any year since 1930 except 1933 and 1936. Reports for anthracite mines in Pennsylvania revealed a better safety record for fatal accidents in 1937 than in any year since 1930 except 1933, 1934, and 1936 and a better record for nonfatal injuries than in any year since 1930 except 1933.

A cooperative project between the Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, and the Montana School of Mines, investigating results of hydraulic systems for transporting sand slurries for emplacement, was begun in August 1955. In such circumstances, the Bureau provides funds for a fellowship leading to a Master of Science degree as well as available instruments, tools, supplies and equipment. The School provides the ore-beneficiating laboratory with its equipment for use as a pilot plant. The success of a hydraulic backfilling method employing mill tailings depends largely upon the physical characteristics of the tailings. One of these characteristics is size distribution, especially in the finer size ranges. When being emplaced underground, almost impervious layers of slimes separate from some types of mill tailings containing a high percentage of slimes and settle on the top of the sand fill. These coatings may be so dense that the water in the slurry cannot percolate through them for proper drainage. Successive layers of fill in a stope, each with an impervious coating on top, sometimes build up a hydrostatic head, creating pressure on the bulkheads. This may cause breaks in the lining material, inducing sand runs and flooding the level and sumps below. Deleterious slimes flocculated and disseminated throughout the sands should help prevent the formation of impervious slime layers, increasing percolation and settling rates.

Io these days of specialization, papers of the kind being considered mostly gravitate to the American Society for Metals, the American Society for Testing Materials, the Institute of Metals, and the Iron and Steel Institute. In proof that there is a place for the newest and most specialized of these societies, the American Society for Metals, it may be said that in the Montreal Chapter there are 200 active members, and in the Ontario Chapter more than 200. Yet the overshadowing glamour of the mining industry proper, and the publicity it receives, result in an almost continuous dearth of students in metallurgical engineering at our universities. There are more jobs than graduates.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of lead and zinc from 104 domestic mines and deposits. Fourteen primary lead and fifty-three primary zinc operations with in situ demonstrated resources containing 27.3 million metric tons (t) of lead and 53 million t of zinc were subsequently evaluated. Potentially 17.5 million t of lead and 2.4 million t of byproduct zinc could be recovered from 14 primary lead operations. Economic evaluations performed in constant January 1982 dollars determined a long-run total cost per pound of recoverable commodity. Including a 15-pct discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR), 59 pct of primary lead was potentially available at or below $0.32 per pound of lead. Potentially 40 million t of zinc and 5.6 million t of byproduct lead could be recovered from 53 primary zinc operations. Ninety percent of the recoverable zinc is potentially available from currently nonproducing mines and deposits, and a weighted average of their long-run total costs was determined at $0.98 per pound of zinc. At a breakeven (0-pct) DCFROR, these non producing operations had a weighted average long-run total cost of $0.58 per pound of zinc. Sensitivity analyses illustrated that operations that recover byproducts were most sensitive to fluctuating metal prices, producing operations were more sensitive to increased smelter treatment charges, and nonproducing operations were impacted most by the DCFROR.

Zinc smelting is frequently termed a ba.ckward art. The term is hardly true, for great progress has been made in recent years in the design and in the thermal efficiency of the retort furnace, in the quality of retorts, in the recovery of zinc, and in the ability to treat more impure and complex ores. The fact remains, however, that the peculiar physical and chemical properties of zinc have delayed such immense advances-large smelting units, high recovery, lowunit costs, and ability to treat low-grade ores-as have been made in the metallurgy of lead and copper. In current retort-smelting practice, the ores, if carbonates, are calcined to remove carbon dioxide; or, if sulphides, are roasted to remove sulphur. The sulphur must be eliminated as completely as possible, usually to less than 1 per cent. This means that the roast must be continued for a long time at a high temperature, with resulting high cost and small capacity per furnace. The roasted ore is mixed with about 50 per cent of its weight of reducer, which may be fine coke, anthracite, or nonbituminous coal. This mixture is charged into horizontal fire-clay retorts. The retorts used in this country are about 8 inches in internal diameter by 4 feet in length and hold 50 or 60 pou~ds of ore. The diameter of the retort is limited by the tirrie required for the heat to penetrate to the center of the charge; the length by the strength of the retort, which at the high temperature employed can not support the weight of the charge if the span is more than about 50 inches. The retorts are heated externally by coal, natural gas, qr ·producer gas to a temperature of 1,200° C. or more. The zinc oxide is reduced to zinc, which is volatile at this temperature, and passes into a conical fire-clay condenser. attached to one end of the retort, where it conde_nses to liquid zinc and is removed. Twenty-four hours are required for distillation, and because of the low heat conductivity of the retort walls 11.nd of the ore charge itself, the heat efficiency even of the most modern regenerative furnacei;; is only about 12 per cent. The retorts have a short life, 30 to 6Q days, at the high temperature required-; zinc losses are heavy, usually 10 per cent or more; and the proportion of impurities in the retort charge must be carefully controlled to prevent the rapid corrosion of retorts. For these reasons, much work has been done in an e:ff ort to, find cheaper and more efficient methods o.f recovering zinc from its ores. Various methods have been proposed for smelting in the blast furnace. Some of these contemplated the production of zinc vapor and its condensation to liquid; others attempted to produce liquid zinc directly by smelting under pressure. It is now realized that fundamental difficulties render these proposals impracticable. The electric furnace for smelting offers obvious advantages in the way of the efficient utilization of energy, large units, easy attainment of high temperatures, and the possibility of treating complex ores. E. H. and A. H. Cowles first suggested a design for an electric furnace for the reduction of zinc ores and patented their process in 1885. Their attention was soon directed to other uses for their furnace and nothing further of importance was done in the electric smelting of zinc until about 1900. Several investigators then started work upon various processes and had more or less success. The chief difficulty they encountered was the impossibility of obtaining more, than a small amount of the zinc as liquid metal because most of the zinc vapor condensed as blue powder. Interest in the electrothermic metallurgy of zinc increased, many patents on processes and furnace design were taken out, and the literature on the subject grew, until in 1914 and 1915 the problem seemed to be approaching solution. About this time the hydrometallurgy of zinc, the development of which had been lagging somewhat behind that of the electrothermic metallurgy, sprang into the limelight and a commercial process was soon perfected. This rapid development, perhaps aided by the war premium on the high-grade spelter produced by electrolytic deposition, distracted attention from electric smelting to some extent, though progress continued. With the perfection and standardization of the electrolytic process has come a better realization of its limitations, especially the necessity for large-scale operation ·and the difficulty of obtaining high extraction. Because of these limitations the electrothermic metallurgy of zinc still has a field of its own and in fac-t promises to become a strong competitor of both hydrometallurgy and retort smelting except under conditions highly favorable to the latter methods. Because of the imperfections of the retort and electrolytic processes and the promise that the electric furnace offers in overcoming these imperfections, the. United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, has undertaken a study of the electrothermic metallurgy of zinc.
