ABSTRACT: Underground hydrocarbons storage is a very specific domain for the designer. He is usually free to adjust the section, shape and layout to cope with the geological and geotechnical conditions. This paper presents a panorama of the geotechnical design of mined underground storage caverns, then lists a number of uncommon features encountered in a storage excavated in Sydney, Australia, the Elgas LPG project that had to face major non-isotropic conditions with numerous local variations, impacting on the achievement of the design profiles. Changes in geotechnical design methodology and practice are examined through this project, now in operation, which will have lasted altogether almost ten years. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die untertaegige Speicherung von Kohlenwasserstoffen unterliegt in der Planung sehr spezifischen Bedingungen. Der planende Ingenieur hat bei der Dimensionierung und Formgebung der Speicherhohlraeume gewisse Freiheiten, muss jedoch vorgefundene geologische und geotechnische Bedingungen beruecksichtigen. Der vorliegende Beitrag gibt zunaechst einen allgemeinen Ueberblick ueber die geotechnische Planung von bergmaennisch aufgefahrenen Speicherhhohlraeumen. Darueber hinaus werden Besonderheiten betrachtet, mit denen das Elgas LPG-Speicherprojekt in einer bergmaennisch aufgefahrenen Kaverne in Sydney, Australien konfrontiert war. Hierbei ging es um die Beruecksichtigung anisotroper Bedingungen mit zusaetzlichen Heterogenitaeten im Gestein und den daraus erwachsenden Schwierigkeiten, die geplante Hohlraumform zu verwirklichen. Ueber einen Zeitraum von fast 10 Jahren, in denen das jetzt in Betrieb befindliche Projekt unterschiedliche Betriebsphasen durchlaufen hat, wurden verschiedene geotechnische Entwurfsverfahren auf ihre Anwendbarkeit geprueft. RESUME : Le stockage souterrain d’hydrocarbures est un domaine très spécifique pour le concepteur, car celui-ci dispose d'une large liberté pour adapter les sections, les formes et les implantations aux conditions géologiques et géotechniques de l’environnement choisi. Après un panorama de la conception géotechnique des stockages souterrains d’hydrocarbures par la méthode dite des cavités minées, l’accent sera mis sur un certain nombre de particularités rencontrées lors du projet de stockage de GPL de Elgas à Sydney en Australie, creusé dans de très fortes conditions d’anisotropie du massif rocheux, avec de nombreuses variations locales et toutes les implications que cela peut avoir sur le maintien des formes. L’évolution des approches méthodologiques géotechniques durant la dizaine d'années de développement de ce projet depuis les premières études jusqu'à l'exploitation actuelle est également présentée. "The Red Mountain porphyry molybdenum deposit is situated in the Big Salmon Range, approximately 80 km east-northeast of Whitehorse, Yukon.Red Mountain is underlain by Paleozoic, argillaceous sedimentary rocks of the Yukon Cataclastic Complex, which have been intruded by a multi-phase mid-Cretaceous stock.Mineraliwtion, quartz stockwork, metal zonation, and an alteration assemblage characteristic of a porphyry molybdenum system have been superimposed on quartz monzonite porphyry and adjacent homfelsed sedimentary rocks. The paper discusses assay methods generally used when prospecting for gold, and also the applicability of various chemical methods, it describes a new paper chromatographic technique.for making fairly rapid semi-quantitative assays for very fine gold. Testing of the method in field work shows that this simple method could have applications in geologic work, in prospecting and in certain routine mine sampling work. It is not yet a method that can be used to detect anomalies in traces of gold dispersed around an orebody, as is general practice in geochemical prospecting.INTRODUCTIONAccording to the English economist Harrod (1958), "the acute shortage of gold in the world-because currency value has not been adjusted in line with the fall in the goods value of the various currencies-has been a familiar fact for some time now". Harrod calculates that a rise in the price of gold to double its present value is necessary to rectify this condition, and that, if this rise were to take place, increase in production and reduction in private hoarding might well bring annual accretion to world stocks from the presentaverage of about $464 million to a figure close to the $2,000 million that would probably eiiminate these shortages.Any increase in the price of gold is bound to lead to a great increase in prospecting at working mines, in abandoned areas and possibly in untouched country. Prospecting, techniques for base metal orebodies have improved greatly in the last thirty years; but methods available to detect gold occurring without accessory metals have not received the same attention. "Maximizing the value of each tonne of processed ore is the goal for all operations. Cyanidation processing of gold-copper ores has been challenging since its first use in 1889. The current practice treats a bleed or the total flow of mill solution to recover copper as copper sulfide (by sulfidization, acidification, recycling, and thickening), or to recover the cyanide (by acidification-volatilizationneutralization). The process presented uses the adsorption of copper cyanide by carbon and the selective elution of copper from carbon to concentrate copper into a smaller stream. Copper contained in the smaller stream is precipitated as copper cyanide.RÉSUMÉ Toutes les exploitations ont pour objectif commun d’optimiser la valeur de chaque tonne de minerai traité. Depuis sa première utilisation en 1889, la méthode de traitement par cyanuration des minerais aurifère et cuprifère s’est révélée complexe. La pratique actuelle traite la saignée ou le débit total d’une solution de traitement du concentrateur pour récupérer le cuivre sous la forme de sulfure de cuivre (par sulfuration, acidification, recyclage et épaississement), ou pour récupérer le cyanure (par acidification, volatilisation et neutralisation). Australian coals tend to be young in geological age and high in ash by world standards; preparation of the coal before marketing is almost universal. On the basis of float and sink data from 39 locations in the Eastern Australian coalfields, the coals are placed in four categories representing increasing difliculty in their washability characteristics. These seem to be related neither to the geological age nor the geographical position of the deposit and Hunter Valley coals, for example, span all categories. The influence of crushing on the washability of Australian coals is briefly considered and from limited data it is concluded to be appreciably smaller than for British or North American coals. A strategy for the float and sink analysis of Australian coals is proposed and the influence of washability characteristics on current trends in the selection of separating processes for coking and steaming products is discussed.

"Abstract - Potentially commercial deposits of kaolin are found in the fluvial Lower Cretaceous Chaswood Formation, the sedimentologically proximal equivalent of deltaic sediments of the offshore Scotian basin. The geological setting of the kaolin deposits has been interpreted from high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles and boreholes, and mineralogical studies on one reference borehole. The kaolin is a product of early diagenesis involving meteoric water below the water table. The distribution of kaolin is controlled by the presence of intraformational unconformities that were sites of ground water recharge, and are marked by the development of oxisols above the water table. Such diagenesis was facilitated by interbedded, loosely consolidated, permeable sandstone. The highest-grade kaolin deposits are found in areas close to river belts, where overbank muds were not sufficiently drained to develop paleosols, but where later uplift created intraformational unconformities. In the sandstone, meteoric water flow altered feldspars to kaolin, thus yielding commercial silica sand deposits. It also altered ilmenite to rutile, which is concentrated as secondary placers in modern rivers that have eroded the Chaswood Formation and tills derived therefrom. Sommaire - Des dépôts de kaolin potentiellement économiques ont été notés dans la Formation de Chaswood d'’âge Crétacé Inférieur, laquelle constitue un équivalent latéral en milieu fluviatile aux sédiments deltaïques du bassin de Scotian. Le contexte géologique de ces dépôts de kaolin a été interprété a partir de profils de seismique-réflection à haute résolution, de sondages, et d’études minéralogiques sur un sondage de référence. Ce kaolin est un produit diagénétique précoce formé par de l’eau météorique sous le niveau de la nappe phréatique. La distribution du kaolin est contrôlée par la présence de zones de recharge associées à des discordances intraformationelles marquées par le développement d’oxisols au-dessus du niveau de la nappe phréatique. La présence d’interlits de grès perméables faiblement consolidés a contribué à l’efficacité de ce processus diagénétique. Les dépôts de kaolin les plus riches se trouvent en périphérie des rivières, là ou les boues de la plaine d’inondation n’étaient pas suffisamment bien drainées pour permettre le développement de paléosols, mais où des mouvements verticaux subséquents ont crée des discordances intraformationelles. La circulation d’eau météorique dans les grès a entraîné l’altération des feldspaths en kaolin, générant ainsi des dépôts économiques de sable de silice. Elle a aussi causé l’altération de l’ilménite en rutile, que l’on trouve dans des placers secondaires situés dans des rivières contemporaines qui ont érodé la Formation de Chaswood et les tills qui en sont dérivés."

In addition to elementary statistical theory the material presented in the bulletin includes: (1) Certain special statistical techniques that have been found useful in mining applications; (2) problems, implications, and limitations that may be encountered in applying these techniques in mine sampling and evaluation; and (3) numerous examples to demonstrate application of the theory and techniques.

Introduction As the Sherritt Gordon property is still in the development stage, . it is rather difficult to write a proper account of the mining methods and milling practice that will be used. While the general scheme of operation will remain the same, there will undoubtedly be many minor changes to meet special conditions which we cannot forsee at the present time. Most of the work accomplished to date has followed the usual routine of preliminary development in the Canadian North. However, we have learned a few things which might be of use to others operating under similar conditions. The most important of these is the saving in power cost made possible by the use of Diesels as against steam power when using wood fuel, and the movement of freight by tractors when rail transportation is not available. Location The property i6 located about 90 miles north of The Pas, or 40 miles northeast of the Flin Flon mine. A branch line from Cranberry Portage, on the?C. N. railway, between Flin Flon and The Pas, connects the property with the outside.

"Some non-flotation chemicals are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust in other areas of the operations. Since dosage levels are generally not high, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect of a specific chemical on the productivity of the flotation circuit. This paper presents a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5–100 g/t). Results indicate that this protocol helps to predict potential interference by a particular chemistry on the flotation circuit.RÉSUMÉ Certains produits chimiques ne servant pas à la flottation sont ajoutés directement et indirectement aux circuits de flottation afin de contrôler des problèmes tels que l’entartage et la poussière dans d’autres secteurs des opérations. INTRODUCTION The economic analysis (Chapter 3), the engineering studies (Chapter 10), the credit structure (and the consequential funding sources) - Chapter 11, and the overall feasibility structure for any venture are all directed to determining one major decision element: How much and how certain is the reward for taking these risks? Risk assessment is a surprisingly weak area of analysis and is usually addressed in a checklist fashion. It is much preferable to deal within a risk system so that the inevitable tradeoffs among risks are correctly made. DEFINITION The first step toward risk definition must be to ascertain all of the risks to which a project or a company is exposed; otherwise one will remain ignorant of the possibility of a financially crippling loss until it occurs. (Carter and Crockford, 1974). However, simply stating what "risk" is can lead to debate. For example, risk could be (adapted from Vaughan, 1982): -the chance of a loss - uncertainty of loss -possibility of loss - uncertainty -dispersion of actual from expected results - probability of an outcome different from the one expected - possibility of an occurrence of an undesirable contingency -a condition in which a possibility of a loss exists. For the minerals industry financier, the last definition is probably the most appropriate. However, from a mineral company's point of view the definition might well include the possibility of not achieving the expected financial return. RISK CLASSIFICATION Risk identification will be readily agreed as the all-important first step. There are five major "branches" of risk classification. These are: -Statistical -Modellers -Checklist -Project Financing -Insurance The Statistical set discovered probability theory and any risk discussion soon deteriorates into a mathematical jungle (Megill, 1977; Hartman, 1976; Reutlinger, 1970; and Pouliquen, 1970).Their use of terminology tells its own story: coin toss (binomial distribution), gamblers' ruin, delphi (oracle) techniques, monte-carlo simulations, random walks, etcetera. These techniques inadequately represent the judgements necessary in an increasingly complicated and interrelated world. The risk Modellers have turned to the computer to handle these inter-relationships but soon find barriers because of "simultaneity". Certainly the computer has its uses to conduct various analyses (marketed as "sensitivity" analyses) but very often one finds that this involves changing one or two variables at a time, all other things being equal. This work is both a revision and an elaboration of Bureau of Mines Bulletin 371, which was published in 1934 and included data available to October 1933. During the intervening years, a large number of new experimental, high-temperature, heat-content data have become available through continuous, systematic efforts of the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines and the Laboratory for Inorganic and Physical Chemistry of the University of Groningen (Netherlands), coupled with various individual investigations at many institutions. In addition, calculations from spectroscopic and molecular constant data have been extended and applied to a wide variety of gaseous substances. This bulletin purposes to collect and correlate all available high-temperature heat-content and specific-heat data for inorganic sub-stances and to formulate tables and algebraic expressions for their representation. It is hoped in this manner to remove some of the tedium of thermodynamic calculations for industrial metallurgical research workers and engineers who often have available only an inadequate library in this field. It is expected also that this bulletin will have value to those teaching courses in metallurgical and chemical thermodynamics.

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo investigar a influência da adição de carvão vegetal e do seu tamanho de partícula na reatividade do coque. Para isso, um carvão vegetal de eucalipto foi adicionado a um carvão médio volátil americano em três teores (3%, 5% e 8%) e em duas faixas granulométricas distintas (abaixo de 1 mm e entre 3 mm e 4 mm). O carvão individual e as misturas de carvão/carvão vegetal foram carbonizados em um forno de escala laboratorial (1 kg). A reatividade dos coques produzidos e do coque de referência foi avaliada e comparada usando análise termogravimétrica. Também foram realizadas análises morfológicas através de microscópio óptico e eletrônico, usando amostras antes e após os ensaios termogravimétricos. Baseado nos resultados, a influência da introdução de carvão vegetal na reatividade do coque foi analisada e discutida neste trabalho.

"This presentation reviews three continuous centrifuge separators, the Falcon-C, Kelsey Jig and Multi-Gravity Separator, two units with possible synergies with centrifuges, the In-Line Pressure Jig and InLine Leach Reactor, and two centrifuge prototypes, the continuous Knelson and the Altair Jig. Typical applications, potential problems, promising synergies and general concentration mechanisms are discussed. A general discussion on the sources of information, the nature of the fluidization water flow, test work for potential centrifuge separations and the early life cycle of new technology, using centrifuge separators as an example, follows. "Cobalt refining at Vale Canada (previously known as Inco) has been associated with Ni production. Because certain compounds of both metals carry risks for adverse health endpoints by inhalation exposure, it is critical to understand the aerosol concentrations of specific substances and the metallurgical processes through which they enter the air. Vale Canada has therefore decided to describe the histories of its Ni-related operations and to report industrial hygiene measurements when available. This paper describes electrolytic Co operations carried out at Port Colborne, Ontario (1954–1966), and provides aerosol measurements (1995–2008) for current Co electrowinning operations.RÉSUMÉ L’affinage du cobalt chez Vale Canada (anciennement Inco) a été associé à la production de nickel. Puisque certains composés de ces deux métaux comportent des risques d’effets néfastes pour la santé par exposition à l’inhalation, il est essentiel de comprendre les concentrations en aérosol des substances spécifiques ainsi que les procédés métallurgiques par lesquels ils entrent dans l’air. This paper presents the art of on-stream particle size and elemental analysis used at iron ore concentrators, followed by the results and experiences from several sites.Online particle size analysis is rather common at medium- to large-sized concentrators. Online X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental analysis, however, is only used in some iron ore concentrators, while it is a routine practice in base metal concentrator plants. Online XRF analysis is applicable for process monitoring and control down to four to five per cent silica by measuring Fe assays accurately. With lower silica content, direct measurement of silica and other light elements is required. Some light element analysers that are based on the prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) method have been developed, but they have not performed up to expectations with slurry analysis. Other methods have been tried though these have not been used beyond prototype installations. Operating online light element slurry analyser installations are not common in iron ore applications.There is an economic incentive to mine lower and variable grade iron ore resources, which require concentration and removal of several impurities to produce high-quality concentrates for pellet production. Monitoring such operations by on-stream analysis has significant economic benefits, and there is a need to develop a dependable slurry online analyser for Si, Al, Mg and other light elements. "IntroductionIN THE COURSE of. a spectrographic investigation of the platinum metal .content of various minerals in sulphide ores, the use of • fire-assay beads dissolved in gold-amalgam ( 1) was found suitable for the quantitative determination of palladium and platinum. Later work on platinum and bismuth-rich beads showed however, that these could not always be readily mixed uniformly in the amalgam. Accordingly another technique was sought which would allow the simultaneous determination of gold, silver, palladium, platinum, rhodium, and bismuth, the last .a common contaminant in fire-assay beads. The method evolved, which consists of dissolving fire-assay •beads in .lead, resembles in several respects the method of Scobie (2) in which silver was used. It has equally good sensitivity arid reproducibility, and allows the determination of silver as well as the other metals mentioned. The 'mutua1 standard' method of calculation (3a) is used to determine actual quantities present. This method has been applied to sulphide and arsenide minerals and •ores• of nickeliferous and non-nickelferous deposits• of both pre-and post Cambrian age, and, following a suggestion by Dr. G. S. Hume and the late Dr. H. V. Ellsworth, Geological Survey of Canada, has also been used for a peculiarly rich platiniferous uranium oxide ore from the Nicholson property, Lake Athakaska, Sask. More recently, the method has been .tested for the determination also of iridium and ruthenium and results indicate it may be applied, as• well to osmium."
