1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1980, 13 companies operated 33 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 62% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 30% of the total production; Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas 19%; Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina 15%; other central and eastern States 36%. Based on published producer prices output of primary metal in 1980 was valued at over $7 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Packaging accounted for an estimated 26% of domestic consumption in 1980, building 22%, transportation 21%, electrical 12%, consumer durables 7%, and other uses 12%.

ABSTRACT Hydrophobic polystyrene nanoparticles were evaluated as potential flotation collectors for pentlandite. The flotation of hydrophilic glass beads demonstrated the nanoparticles’ ability to induce flotation. Deposition of nanoparticles on glass surfaces increased the contact angle and enhanced adhesion of the beads to air bubbles. High flotation recoveries were achieved when 5–10% of the bead surfaces were covered with nanoparticles. Surface functionalization—the addition of vinylimidazole to polystyrene nanoparticle surfaces—caused the nanoparticles to selectively deposit onto pentlandite surfaces in the presence of Mg-Si slimes. "Abstract - The development of robust 3-D geological models involves the integration of large amounts of public geological data, as well as additional accessible proprietary lithological, structural, geochemical, geophysical, and diamond drill hole data. 3-D models and maps have been available, particularly in the petroleum industry, for more than 10 years. Here, we demonstrate how robust 3-D maps can be used as interactive tools for mineral deposits exploration. In particular, we show how the interrogation of 3-D data sets can constrain exploration targets at depth. The main advantages of this technique for the mining industry are the homogeneity of data treatment and the validation of geological interpretations, taking into account geophysical and geochemical data. Data integration and cross-correlation of geology and geophysics can be achieved in two dimensions in any good GIS package. However, the added strength of 3-D analysis is the integration of separate data sets in three dimensions to build more complete, more realistic models, and in delineating areas of high economic potential at depth. Furthermore, these models can be modified and improved at any time by adding new data from ongoing drilling and geoscientific surveys. This paper presents two examples of 3-D models used for mineral exploration: the Joutel VMS mining camp and the Duparquet gold camp, Quebec. In both examples, the creation of the model is discussed and queries specific to the relevant exploration model are introduced. Eight potential exploration targets are generated at Joutel and seven at Duparquet. Although the targets defined are dependent on the details of the chosen queries, it is apparent that this technique has the potential to generate promising exploration activity that can engender new targets. Sommaire - Le développement de modèles 3-D géo-intégrés fiables implique l’intégration de grandes quantités de données géologiques publiques ainsi que des données lithologiques, structurales, géochimiques, géophysiques et de forages en provenance du secteur privé. L’industrie pétrolière dispose de modèles et de cartes 3-D depuis plus de 10 ans. Ce manuscrit présente un exemple d’utilisation de modèles et de cartes tridimensionnels détaillés comme outils interactifs dans l’exploration de dépôts métallifères. L’emphase est mise sur le processus d’interrogation des données en 3-D pour la définition de cibles d’exploration en profondeur. Les avantages principaux de cette technique sont l’uniformité du traitement des données et de la validation des interprétations géologiques, tout en tenant compte des données géophysiques et géochimiques. L’intégration de données et la corrélation de la géologie et de la géophysique peuvent être accomplies en deux dimensions dans n’importe quel logiciel SIG. La plus grande force de l’analyse 3-D demeure cependant la possibilité de construire des modèles complets et réalistes permettant de cibler des secteurs à haut potentiel économique en profondeur. De plus, ces modèles peuvent être modifiés et améliorés de manière interactive en ajoutant de nouvelles données provenant de forages et de levés géoscientifiques en cours. Ce manuscrit présente deux exemples de modèle 3-D géo-intégrés développés pour l’exploration minérale : le camp de SMV de Joutel et le camp aurifère de Duparquet, Québec. Dans les deux cas, la construction du modèle est décrite et les requêtes spécifiques à chaque type de gisement sont présentées. L’exercice a permis de définir huit cibles d’exploration potentielles à Joutel et sept à Duparquet. Bien que les cibles identifiées dépendent des contraintes utilisées pour les requêtes choisies, cette technique permet de générer de nouvelles cibles qui pourraient relancer l’activité d’exploration dans les camps miniers " matures " ou dans des secteurs moins explorés."

Les substrats organiques sont à la base des biofiltres utilisant la réduction des sulfates pour générer de l&apos;alcalinité et diminuer la concentration des métaux dans des effluents contaminés. Afin de tester l&apos;efficacité de résidus forestiers utilisés dans de tels contextes, cinq types d&apos;écorce de nature et d&apos;âge variables ont été placés dans des contenants hermétiques et mis en présence d&apos;une solution synthétique de drainage minier acide. Le pH, l&apos;alcalinité et les concentrations de Fe2+ et SO4 2- ont été mesurés à intervalles réguliers pendant 70 jours. L&apos;importance d&apos;un éventuel neutralisant minéral et du type de souches de bactéries sulfato-réductrices pour l&apos;initiation et l&apos;évolution des réactions d&apos;oxydo-réduction ont été évalués en utilisant de la dolomite ainsi que des inocula de sédiments portuaires réducteurs et de boues d&apos;usine d&apos;épuration. Une augmentation de pH et des diminutions de Fe2+ et SO4 2- ont été notées dans tous les réacteurs. En l&apos;absence de dolomite, le pH augmentait de 1.6 à 5-6, Fe2+ diminuait de 400 à moins de 5-100 mg/L, et SO4 2- diminuait de 2500 à 750-1250 mg/L. Les échantillons inoculés avec des sédiments s&apos;avéraient légèrement plus performants que ceux avec boues. En présence de dolomite, le pH atteignait 6.5-7.0, et Fe2+ et SO4 2- tombaient à <5 et 20-40 mg/L, respectivement. Le degré de réactivité des résidus forestiers n&apos;était pas une simple fonction inverse de leur âge. Les échantillons ayant le mieux réagi, bien que parmi les plus vieux testés (années 1980), étaient ceux contenant une proportion significative d&apos;écorces de feuillus et peu de bran de scie. Les échantillons avec des proportions élevées d&apos;écorce de conifères ou de bran de scie étaient associés à des taux de réduction moindre. Nonobstant l&apos;amélioration rapide des conditions obtenue avec la dolomite, grâce à une neutralisation initiale plus prompte, il s&apos;avère que le type de résidus forestiers éventuellement utilisé dans une barrière réactive est de première importance pour l&apos;efficacité des mécanismes de réduction. Un système basé sur l&apos;utilisation de résidus forestiers devrait utiliser des écorces (plutôt que du bois) provenant de feuillus (plutôt que de conifères).

"INTRODUCTION This investigation was undertaken to obtain information concerning the effects of boron in steel and its method of addition, so that boron, which is readily obtainable domestically, may be used to relieve the great demand for those scarce, strategic, alloying elements that hitherto have been considered necessary for the successful manufacture of quality steel.Previous Work Guillet 4/ seems to have been the first to predict that boron-bearing steel might have a possible industrial use when, in 1907, he published results of an investigation into the properties of steel containing 0.21 to 1.51 percent boron.Possibly Walter 2/ was the first to appreciate the fact that extremely small percentages of boron are effective in improving the properties of a steel. His patent, issued in 1924 claimed steels containing boron within the limits of 0.001 to 0.100 percent; furthermore, the specifications disclosed that boron increased the hardenability of steel and refined its grain structure. In 1937, Naton and Piwowarsky 6/ otherwise observed that boron increased the hardenablity of steel."

El presente artículo describe la historia geológica pre-cretácica de la Cordillera Negra. En algunos intervalos predominaron los pantanos que dieron lugar a la formación de carbones. Luego, en el Valanginiano superior, la región estuvo sumergida, depositándose calizas delgadas. Explosives identification tagging refers to the addition to explosives, during manufacture, of coded microparticles that can survive detonation, be recovered and decoded, and allow the explosives to be identified and traced to the last legal possessor as a result of distribution records kept of the coded tagged explosives. This study seeks to prepare the way for National implementation of identification tagging of all dynamites and cap-sensitive slurries (also known as water gels) by resolving technical issues and by developing a plan for pilot testing of the program. It is presented in two volumes: Volume I, National Implementation Model, and Volume II, Pilot Test Plan.

Development in the Upper Texas Gulf Coast during 1945 resulted in the discovery of 23 new fields; one Miocene, eight Frio, three Cockfield-Yegua and eleven along the Wilcox trend. The Wilcox trend appears to he the most active at this time. Producing depths of the new Wilcox discoveries range from 2050 to 10,050 ft. Drilling along the Frio trend has been, for the greater part, projected to the deeper downdip sands. Eighteen of the new discoveries are classified as oil or condensate and five are gas discoveries.

"The Anomaly A area of the Clarence Stream gold deposits in southwestern New Brunswick contains mineralized structures that bear geometrical relationships to regional folding events. The four mineralized zones of Anomaly A (AD, MW, 93, and Murphy) are hosted by turbiditic graywacke, quartzose wacke, siltstone, and argillite sequences of the Kendall Mountain Formation. A regional scale structural analysis reflects at least four deformational events, three of which appear to control the folded geometry of Anomaly A (D2, D3, and D4). F2 and F3 folds are coaxial and are refolded into a dome and basin geometry by F4 folds. The mineralized zones are subparallel to axial surfaces of F2 folds. Structural analysis of a mineralized zone exposed at surface indicates that gold mineralization is hosted by a quartz-vein system that comprises veins generated during both D2 and D3. Threedimensional representations of Anomaly A created using drill-core data and ®GoCAD suggest that the quartz-vein system was emplaced in fault structures during D2 as well as within brecciated dilation zones during D3. Three of the four zones that make up Anomaly A have F2 hinge surfaces that can be linked through a geometry compatible with the style of F3 and F4 folds. The apparent continuity of these three zones indicates the potential for kilometer-scale mineralized structures at Anomaly A. Les plis P2 et P3 sont coaxiaux et sont replissés en dômes et bassins par les plis P4. Les zones minéralisées sont subparallèles aux plans axiaux des plis P2. Une analyse structurale effectuée sur une zone minéralisée exposée à la surface indique que la minéralisation aurifère est localisée dans un système de veines de quartz qui contient des veines générées durant D2 et D3. Des représentations en trois-dimensions créées avec le programme informatique ®GoCAD à partir de données de forages suggèrent que le système de veines est localisé dans des zones de failles D2 ainsi que dans des zones de dilatation associées avec D3. Trois des quatre zones qui forment l’Anomalie A possèdent des plans axiaux P2 qui peuvent être liés par l’entremise d’une géométrie qui respecte le style des plis P3 et P4. La continuité apparente de ces trois zones indique qu’une structure minéralisée pourrait s’étendre sur plusieurs kilomètres dans le secteur de l’Anomalie A."

The objective of the study is to examine the apparent influence of soil and near surface rock strata on the severity of damage experienced by surface structures subjected to mine subsidence. The report discusses: 1) modes of ground movement that might complicate or be confused with mine subsidence; 2) prevailing concepts concerning mine subsidence in the Northern Appalachian Coal Field and Illinois Basin; 3) apparent influences of soil and near surface rock strata on the character of subsidence-related ground movements; 4) classifications and criteria for characterizing damage due to ground movements; and 5) types of subsidence damage experienced by homes above active mines in western Pennsylvania. Presented is a damage classification system incorporating a severity index for characterizing subsidence damage to homes with basements above active mines. A series of case histories illustrate subsidence damage to structures above active and abandoned mines.

WORLD production of silver in 1929 totaled 256 million ounces. In 1928 production was 258 million ounces, and in 1927, 254 million ounces. With an actual decrease in the amount of silver produced last year, as compared with 1928, and an increase over 1927 of less than one per cent, obviously there has been no overproduction of the metal in the popular sense. But the price of silver tells a different story. For 1927, the average quotation was 56.37 cents; it was 58.17 in 1928, and 53.0 in 1929. During the last year it reached a high point of 57 cents in January, and fell steadily, without interruption to the downward trend, to a low of 47 cents in December. Since then it has dropped to an all time low of 43 cents on February 6.

A brief review of the silver industry is presented to set the stage for the analysis of the distribution of silver production by source from various types of mines in Canada and of the changing relationship between the total output of silver and the total output of base metals. The decline in the average grade of the Canadian mines is also discussed and a trend for the future is proposed. The report then examines in broader aspects the world primary silver production and concludes, in the section on outlook, that the effective supply in primary silver will grow at a rate significantly lower than the growth rate expected for base metals. A cumulative deficit of some 900 million ounces is projected for the period 1975-1980 and a further deficit of some 1,100 million ounces if projected for the 1980-to-1985 period.

Cette présentation décrit les étapes de développement et l?exploitation souterraine au puits Penna chez Agnico-Eagle division Laronde. Les sujets suivants sont touchés : le fonçage du puits, le développement des niveaux, la méthode d?exploitation, la manutention de la roche brisée, le méthode de remblayage et la ventilation. En résumé : le fonçage du puits s?est fait sur 2,240 mètres de novembre 1995 à mars 2000. Le développement des niveaux a débuté en octobre 1998. Les opérations de minage ont débutés en août 99 dans le premier horizon situé au dessus du niveau 122. Les chantiers sont exploités par longs-trous d?environ 25 mètres de long avec un diamètre de 10 cm. Les accès à la zone minéralisée sont transverses. Le minerai est soutiré des chantiers et acheminé au passe-minerai a l?aide de chargeuses navettes. Par la suite, le minerai passe sur un marteau, est concassé et transporté sur un convoyeur, jusqu?au silo de 4,500 tonnes au-dessus de la station de chargement automatisée du niveau 152 d?ou les skips sont alimentés. Le remblai en pâte est envoyé de la surface par des trous ayant un revêtement d?acier. Le diamètre intérieur est de 15 cm. Le réseau de ventilation est principalement alimentée par des ventilateurs de surface (système aspirant et souflant) conçus pour acheminer sous-terre un maximum de 640 mètres cubes par minutes (1,350,000 pcm).

In 1861, Reich and Stockhardt examined the extent of injury to vegetation by the Muldner works. Needles and twigs of pine showed in 100,000 parts : Pb, 5 to 50 ; As, 3.3 to 14.3 ; S02, 62 to 120. In the top twigs, 5 to 8 ; needles, 10 to 16 ; thicker twigs, 10 to 22 ; thinner twig-ends, 17 to 54 of lead. Lead greater in amount in sickly twig-ends with few needles ; also in the bark than in the naked wood of the trunk, which had hardly a trace ; also in the part turned toward the works than on the opposite side. Pb and As diminished in the vegetation with distance from the smelter ; and the same with regard to the soil. Fresh snow was collected, and SO, As, and Pb detected in it.

A DISCUSSION of the developments of the past decade in the field of refractories, and the effect of these developments on the performance and life of open-hearth furnaces, is perhaps best introduced by reference to Fig. 1. This shows the most important types of refractories doing into various parts of the furnace, together with their cost, and remarks on their use. It has been estimated that half of the refractory makers market comes from the iron and steel industry, and something like one-third of all refractory brick used finds its way into open-hearth furnaces. To melt steel, a furnace capable of withstanding temperatures close to 3000 deg. F. is required. The furnace is assembled of various refractory materials selected by experience and economic considerations. Furnace structures today, from a refractory standpoint, are considerably different from a quarter century ago. Furnace operators, interested in the performance of refractories, care little how they are made or where they come from so long as they give reasonable service. But, the entire history of the refractory is important and technical knowledge of the ceramic materials used in making the refractory is necessary to the manufacturers, so that the proper article gets into the hands of the ultimate consumer.

On the preceding pages, operations of the four major producers of nickel today have been described. There are, however, other operations in the world that, while not as large, are still of importance to the over-all picture of the industry. Among these are the Finnish producer, Outokumpu Oy, a state-controlled company that operates the Kotlahti mine 200 miles northeast of Helsinki. The ore from this operation, which began production in 1959, is pentlandite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite, occurring as disseminations in the host rock and in breccias. The flowsheet of the 1500-tpd mill at Kotlahti follows standard practices of crushing, grinding, and flotation to produce a pentlandite-pyrrhotite concentrate and a copper concentrate, both of which are shipped to the smelter at Harjavalta.

The Canadian concept for nuclear fuel waste disposal is being assessed by AECL Research in a series of experiments at its Underground Research Laboratory (URL) near Lac du Bonnet. Manitoba, Canada. As pan of this research, the Mine-by Experiment has been designed to obtain information on rock mass behavior, the development of an excavation-induced damage zone and failure mechanisms around a circular bored tunnel. An iterative design approach was used to effectively reconcile the experiment objectives and construction logistics. This paper discusses the design considerations and construction methodology adopted on the project.

"Le présent article porte sur la diminution des rejets de concentrateurs produits durant l’exploitation et le traitement des minerais métalliques.Le minerai dilué envoyé au traitement a, très souvent, un certain pourcentage du stérile qui affecte directement la rentabilité des opérations souterraines et amplifie l’impact négatif sur l’environnement. Les essais de la séparation du stérile et du minerai effectués en milieu dense sur quelques types de la minéralisation d’or, ont démontré les deux possibilités qu’offre cette technique:• Dans le cas d’un minerai riche, il a été possible de séparer la part importante du toutvenant (minerai dilué contenant le minerai et le stérile) provenant de la dilution, tout en ayant un taux de récupération élevé (supérieur à 96%).• Dans le cas d’un minerai ayant une teneur sub-économique à cause d’une dilution importante, il est possible de produire un concentré ayant une teneur économique à l’entrée de l’usine de traitement, en éliminant une partie du tout-venant.En plus la séparation du stérile peut accroître, en outre, la rentabilité de l’exploitation minière, car le fait d’éliminer la partie de stérile le plus tôt possible diminue certains coûts (transport, traitement et autres). On conclue que la pré-concentration du minerai (séparation du stérile et du minerai) est probablement une seule solution actuellement étudiée qui diminue l’impact environnemental de la mine, sans avoir des conséquences négatives sur la rentabilité de l’exploitation souterraine."
