[In many coal-mining countries, during he pest decade, there have seen made extended studies and accurate measurement of movement of roof strata, tests of the physical properties of specimens cut therefrom, and tests of the strength of end load on artificial supports. Naturally, such studies have been more extensive in European countries, where mining conditions are less favorable than in the United States. As a part of its work in the conservation of coal resource and prevention of accidants in mines, the Bureau of brines began systematic measurements of the movement of roof strata to in coal mines in the fall of 1935. It was decided- that, in the beginning, work on a rapidly retreating rib line in a mechanized mine would give the greatest amount of information in a reasonable time. To this end w cooperative tine agreement was made with the Pittsburgh Coal Co., through Dr. L. E. Young, vice: president in charge of operations, for conduct of work in that company's Montour 10 mine operating in the Pittsburgh coal bed. This paper gives an account of the methods used in the investigation, excerpts from the data obtained, and such generalizations as appear to be justified.]

On June 20, 1972, Ocean Energy was awarded Contract No. H0220055, entitled Portable Task Luminaire System Development. Initially, this was a 12 month program consisting of three phases: Phase I -- Design of the Luminaire System and Battery Chargers, Phase II -- Fabrication of Prototype Units, Phase III -- Fabrication of Production Prototype Units and Battery Chargers. In addition to developing the Portable Task Luminaire System, however, this contract was amended a number of times in the course of the program to include the development of a Low Coal Portable Task Luminaire, a Rib Mounted Luminaire System, and a Machine Mounted Luminaire System, all based upon the same high frequency fluorescent lighting and safety technologies involved in the Portable Task Luminaire. This report covers the activities of this program as amended, and includes the development and fabrication of all of the systems. This report constitutes the final fulfillment of the contract.

Polkowice region (Lower Silesia, Poland) is an area, where the copper mining activity started about 40 years ago and new technologies were applied. There are 3 underground mines, 3 processing plants, tailings pond (the biggest one in Europe), pipelines for flotation waste transport, railways. Although new technologies were applied during the copper ore exploitation, the environment in this area were polluted mostly by dust containing copper, lead, zinc and arsenic. Estimated values of heavy metals in polluted soils were compared to the natural contents of this metals. The geochemical background for Polkowice area was defined. The pollution zones occur around mining facilities. Copper ore exploitation and processing is planned for the next 20-40 years depending on market situation. After mines and other facilities closing the most important problem will be sustainable development of this area. To evaluate the scope of revitalization activities the analysis of recent soil environment condition will be necessary as well as forecasts for pollution migration. Geostatistic methods used also in mining will be very helpful for this task.

The Federal Bureau of Mines evaluated the prospects for using geothermal energy to generate electricity for mines in remote areas. Given the development of a geothermal resource for this purpose, the subsidiary uses of space heating and agriculture were then examined to see if other industries might be viable given a cheap source of heat energy. Sites investigated were located in three areas of Alaska: Kobuk in the northwest, Unalaska in the southwest, and Stikine River in the southeast. Each site was relatively close to mineral deposits whose prospects for development would be enhanced with cheap power.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted field studies in coal mines throughout the United States to determine the effectiveness of electromagnetic techniques in locating miners trapped underground following a mine accident. Data from these tests have been used to generate models of expected signal and noise distributions as found above these mines. These distributions have aided in placing the expected performance of a through-the-earth electromagnetic communications technique into a probabilistic framework. Results show that at a 10% false-alarm rate, the expected probability o detecting a miner's signal" from a depth of 1000 ft is 54% at 500 ft it is 95%. These depths exceed the actual depths of 90 and 50%, respectively, of United States coal mines. Sensitivity studies have shown that at depth of 1000 ft, the probability of detection will improve approximately 2% for each dB of increase in signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio.

As in many other industries, such as construction and agriculture, overhead electric power lines are a serious hazard at mining and mining-related operations. Even when excluding injuries that occur during electrical maintenance work, over one fourth of electrical fatalities in the mining industry are due to accidental overhead line contacts, and for each fatality nearly two serious non-fatal injuries occur due to such contacts. In incidents involving high-reaching mobile equipment, many of the victims touched the equipment after the fact, unaware that the machine frame had become energized by the line contact. MSHA data for accidents involving overhead power line contacts in the mining industry between 1980 and 1997 reveal that in 57% of the cases personnel were unaware of the accidental line contact until after one or more workers touched the equipment or a hoisted load and were injured. The situation is similar in the construction industry, where according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) data at least 20% of such victims are unaware of the line contact. This suggests that a device that alerts workers when a power line has been contacted could help prevent many of these injuries. Such a device would not prevent power line contacts, yet if widely employed could yield a significant reduction in the number of resulting injuries. Researchers at the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory are attempting to develop such a device. The approach being investigated is based on measuring electric current flow to ground through a machine during a line contact. The specific technique being tested involves the diversion of some part of this current through a shunt cable mounted on board the machine, to provide a point at which to install a current sensor. Experiments thus far indicate that this approach is feasible. Ongoing research is better defining electric current flow through mobile equipment, refining techniques for measuring this current, and identifying factors that could limit the effectiveness of the proposed alarm.

This paper discusses the social and economic impact of mining, and in particular goldmining, on New Zealand. The range of topics covered and their complexity has confined us in this paper to highlighting the main points of concern û a detailed report is under preparation. A major problem in undertaking this study was the lack of hard data on important environmental, economic and social issues and if there is to be effective planning in the area of natural resource use this situation must be rectified. The following conclusions were drawn: Goldmining was very important in shaping New Zealand's early social and economic development, providing wealth, employment and impetus for social change.Foreign investment and technology has been an essential element in New ZealandÆs economic development.Mining is a small industry at present by this must not be allowed to obscure its potential to broaden New Zealand's economic base and provide foreign exchange.With modern methods, development of mineral resources and environmental protection are not incompatible but certain unique and irreplaceable areas must be preserved.There are problems in evaluating mining and other projects because different groups hold different values, and arguments often hinge on the valuation of costs and benefits rather than the technical aspects of the analysis.Mineral exploration is a high risk business and the potential returns must be sufficient to attract capital if New Zealand's mineral resources are to be developed.A resurgence of goldmining will clearly have obvious benefits for Waihi but the local community must plan carefully for their future. New Zealand will also gain valuable foreign exchange required for higher levels of economic activity.

In September 2004, Hurricanes Frances and Ivan caused the Pigeon River in western North Carolina to flood. This flooding eroded the embankment below Interstate 40 (I-40) and sent one of the eastbound lanes, along with the roadway shoulder, into the river below the embankment. North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) needed to reopen all the lanes of I-40 as soon as possible and considered this damage to be an emergency situation. NCDOT contracted Schnabel Foundation Company to design and build a repair that would keep this important interstate open and reestablish the eastbound lane. The obstacles included limited work room, the requirement of keeping the remaining lanes of I-40 in service, and producing a final product that would be relatively maintenance free and last at least 100 years. The proposed repair had to consider that the existing interstate was founded on a rock fill that was constructed from rock blasted off the adjacent mountain side. The selected design included two, tied-back micropile walls to address these obstacles and other issues. Each of the walls were constructed of 10.75 inch diameter micropiles and corrosion-protected tieback anchors installed through the existing rock fill into competent bedrock, concrete wales, and a reinforced shotcrete facing. This successful project was completed during the coldest months of the year and within the timeframe established by the State of North Carolina. This paper will discuss the design and construction of the repair and the many challenges that had to be overcome.

The steps for the beneficiation of iron ores differ from ore to ore, depending on the mineralogical phases of the particular iron ore and the nature of the association of the gangue minerals with iron oxide in that ore. The extent to which the beneficiation can be undertaken economically depends both on the amount and the nature of the gangue. The analysis of the phases present in an orebody optimises the mining and process operations (separation, beneficiation, sintering, etc).X-ray diffraction (XRD) provides qualitative and quantitative information about the main ore phases as well as the gangue mineralogy and the amorphous content present in a sample. In addition, modern quantification methods such as Rietveld refinement allow the calculation of the distribution of elements in solid solutions such the substitution of Fe with Al in goethite or hematite.The use of high speed detectors has made XRD an important tool for grade and process control. Finger printing of XRD data can facilitate multi-dimensional mapping of ore deposits and drill cores, identifying regions of favourable mineral compositions. Grade control using XRD can be completely automated and controlled remotely.The two case studies in this paper demonstrate how XRD and finger printing can be used for grade control, process optimisation and quality control of a goethitic and a magnetitic iron ore. The enormous potential of XRD as an inexpensive, reliable tool, useful in the characterisation of iron ores will be demonstrated.CITATION:K÷nig, U, 2013. "The Cobalt embayment is a large domain of Paleoproterozoic clastic sedimentary rocks that unconformably overlies the Archean Abitibi greenstone belt. Regionally extensive sills and dikes of Nipissing diabase, emplaced circa 2219 Ma, occur throughout the embayment and are the preferential host to gold-bearing polymetallic vein systems on the Merico-Ethel property, near the northeastern margin of the Cobalt embayment. These gold-bearing, polymetallic veins are predominantly east-west-trending, steeply dipping, discordant calcite- quartz vein systems that formed close to the time of crystallization (within ~15 m.y., based on Pb-Pb ages) of the Nipissing diabase. The ore mineralogy is complex in character, typically comprising sulfides, arsenides, native metals (gold and silver), and specular hematite, preferentially concentrated along the interface between silicate and calcite gangue. A simplified sequence of mineral deposition in the veins is: (1) "Early-stage" pyrite ± chalcopyrite hosted in quartz ± chlorite gangue; (2) "Main-stage" polymetallic (Cu + Co + As + Ag + Au + Bi ± Pb ± Ni ± U) sulfides, arsenides, and native metals hosted in calcite gangue; and (3) "Late-stage" calcite flooding ± galena. Wall-rock alteration in Nipissing diabase is restricted to narrow (<5 cm) haloes of calcite-chloriteepidote- bearing assemblages, whereas a weak alteration halo of specular hematite, calcite, and allanite-epidote has been observed in the surrounding sedimentary rocks. In terms of their age, geology, mineralogy, paragenesis, and morphology, the gold-bearing vein systems at Merico-Ethel closely resemble the silver-sulfarsenide vein deposits of the historic Cobalt and Gowganda mining camps. These observations indicate that the Au-bearing veins are variants of the Ag-vein systems and as such, have a common genesis belt. La Diabase de Nipissing, mise en place vers 2219 Ma et qui constitue un réseau de sills et de dykes d’importance régionale, est présente dans l’ensemble de l’échancrure et constitue la roche-hôte principale des systèmes de veines aurifères-polymétalliques de la propriété Merico-Ethel, près de la bordure nord-est de l’Échancrure de Cobalt. Ces veines à minéralisation aurifère et polymétallique constituent un système de veines de calcite-quartz sécantes d’orientation principalement est-ouest et à pendage fort qui se sont formées peu de temps après la cristallisation de la Diabase de Nipissing (à ~15 Ma près, d’après les âges Pb-Pb). La minéralogie de la minéralisation est complexe; elle consiste typiquement en sulfures, en arséniures, en métaux natifs (or et argent) et en hématite spéculaire, préférentiellement concentrés à l’interface entre les silicates et la gangue de calcite. La séquence de déposition simplifiée des minéraux dans les veines est : (1) «Stade précoce» pyrite ± chalcopyrite encaissés dans une gangue de quartz ± chlorite; (2) "Stade principal" sulfures polymétalliques (Cu + Co + As + Ag + Au + Bi ± Pb ± Ni ± U), arséniures, et métaux natifs dans une gangue de calcite; et (3) "Stade tardif" calcite massive ± galène. L’altération pénétrative de la Diabase de Nipissing est confinée à des halos étroits (<5 cm) présentant des assemblages marquées par la présence de calcite-chlorite-épidote, tandis qu’un faible halo d’altération en hématite spéculaire, calcite et en allanite-épidote est noté dans les roches sédimentaires environnantes. A study is described which attempts to identify the chemical factors of common concern to environmental and exploration geochemistry as indicated by recent work in both disciplines in Nova Scotia. Cores taken in lake sediments define geochemical baselines for the modern and pre-industrialisation periods. The investigation of lake and stream drainage indicates the presence of numerous chemical and organic factors that can be attributed to man's activities, such as construction and energy consumption. Geochemical surveys of lake and stream sediments are used to locate potentially toxic, high risk areas in Nova Scotia. Rapid change occurs in most surface drainage systems with the possibility of numerous chemical reactions taking place. It is found that spatial and temporal variations in the chemistry of modern and recent sediments are of interest to exploration and environmental surveys.

"From1927 to1989, the Hornemineproduced53.7 Mt of ore grading 6.1 g/t Au and 2.2% Cu from two large volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits composed primarily of pyrrhotite, pyrite and chalcopyrite. The ore bodies were hosted by a package of chlorite-sericitealtered epiclastic rhyolite tuffs which were deposited in a narrow palaeo-graben located on the flank of a major felsic volcanic centre. M ineralizingfluids percolated upward through the permeable footwall rocks and were further focussed along syn-volcanic, graben-bounding faults. Sulphides were deposited by a process of sub-seafloor replacement of the rhyolite tuffs.Gold-copper-(zinc) mineralization, including ore zones mined between 1985 and 1989 as the REMNOR ore zones, is present throughout the 900 m of felsic volcanic stratigraphy at the Horne. All the deposits were formed by syn-volcanic hydrothermal processes active during felsic volcanism. Ces gites se sont formes par le biais d' un processus hydrothermal qui ag issait pendant le volcanisme felsique. II n'y a aucune évidence de minéralisation aurifère d'importance économique qui soit postérieure a l' activité hydrothermale syn-volcanique."

Extraction and separation of La, Sm and Dy ions from acidic sulfate-phosphate solutions was investigated using a cation exchange extractant, bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid, CYANEX 272, in kerosene. The influence of shaking time, equilibrium pH, extractant, sulfate and phosphate ion concentrations, diluent type and temperature was studied. The extraction was found to be pH-dependent, and increasing the phosphate ion concentration inhibited the extraction which was found to be endothermic. The stoichiometry of the extracted metal species was found to be MOH.H2OHSO4H2A.A2. Aliphatic diluents were found to enhance the extraction compared to aromatic diluents. The results showed that there was a separation mode between the metal ions when varying the hydrogen ion and sulfate ion concentrations, under the used experimental conditions. The investigated process was used for the recovery of La, Sm and Dy from the acid solution resulting from the leaching of low-grade monazite.

On the more important mines it is almost essential to have a general plan of the surface. A special feature of this plan should be the indication thereon of a suitable arrangement of contour lines, either wholly over the surface of the property or at parts where may seem most useful. The importance of having these contours marked on the plan will be best appreciated by the engineer, in selecting the best available site for a proposed new plant, in locating a tramway, in connecting the surface with the underground workings to the best advantage, or in solving many similar problems that come within his province. The closer the contours are together vertically the better, the limitation being the trouble and expense of getting them on to the plan. They may range from five to fifty feet apart but a distance of ten feet will be found, in most cases, to be the most useful.In deciding the datum level from which these contours are to be measured, it is best to depart from the ordinary sea level datum, and use instead the highest available point on the property. This datum will be called zero and all levels will be reckoned so many feet below it; thus by a contour marked 160 on the plan, it will be understood that the level of the plane of the contour is 160 feet below the highest available point on the property. This system of measuring levels downward is readily suggested from measuring the depths of shafts from the brace or of excavations from the original surface.
