"In 1912 bauxite was discovered in the Andersonville district, which lies in the 28th and 29th land districts of Georgia and comprises parts of Sumter, Macon, and Schley Counties. Mining was begun in May 1914 by the Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. Considerable ore has been produced in this region since that time by individual interests and by the American Cyanamid & Chemical Corp., which acquired the property formerly owned by the Republic Co.The area was examined in the fall of 1941 by representatives of the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey, after which a prospecting program was begun by the Bureau. Drilling was started on December 26, 1941, and continued until November 18, 1943. A total of 1,192 holes was drilled in the district, and 3,679 samples were taken and analyzed.Mineral exploration agreements were signed by 146 property owners covering 42,128 acres. Holes were drilled on 121 of these properties, which have a total area of 38,778 acres.Drilling under this project disclosed several new deposits, of which four have been completely delimited. Previous prospecting in this area by mining companies did not find bauxite, as it lies under heavy overburden. Work by the Bureau indicates 14,412,000 long tons of ore containing 30 percent or more alumina. The total tonnage is divided as follows:Georgia State Highway Routes 26 and 4-9 traverse the district. The Central of Georgia Railroad passes through the center of the entire district (see fig. 1).The project was initiated by J. R. Thoenen, supervising engineer, Non-metals Mining Section, Mining Division, Bureau of Mines. It was under his general supervision until July 1942, after which it was under the general supervision of E. J. Lintner and Rowe McCrae, district engineers for Georgia, South Carolina, and Flordia, respectively.John C. Feeley, Jr., was project engineer from December 1941 to April 1942. Other engineers who assisted in the work on the project are R. E. Babcock, T. M. Romslo, Don M. Coulter, and Walter T. The battle of the gold standard is not limited to one country alone, or even to a single group of countries. It is being waged merrily in many important commercial and industrial quarters. Though it is not always a practical issue calling for immediate attention, it is none the less, quite widely, engaging the thought of bankers and other students of finance. The controversy arises, in the last analysis, because of the desire of men to secure a stable currency. There are two ways of restoring a reasonably stable currency system: (1) the re-establishment of the gold standard, or (2) the deliberate and artificial management of a paper currency. Both systems are well known. The gold standard was in use prior to the war in the principal commercial countries. A currency of inconvertible paper has been at times employed in the past in various countries; for example in Britain from 1797 to 1821, and in the United States from 1862 to 1879. The gold standard, as all are aware, implies the selection of gold as the standard of value. The unit of value is a fixed weight of gold and, so long as the standard remains unimpaired, all other means of payment are maintained at a parity with standard gold coins. And gold coins alone constitute the standard money, inasmuch as their value as bullion equals their value as coins. Under the gold standard this would not be true of any other form of money, although all other varieties of money, including bank notes, government notes and silver coins would be freely convertible into gold money. Strictly speaking, the gold standard also implies that the gold money in turn shall itself be freely convertible, through melting, into gold bullion and freely exportable.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program again forged ahead during 1952, and important technical advances led the way to improved methods of converting coal and oil shale into liquid fuels. Marking the eighth year of activities under this program, the past 12 months brought a new domestic industry nearer realization.The increasing demand for gasoline and oil and the rising cost of finding new petroleum, coupled with America's growing dependence on imports and the unsettled international situation, have continued emphasize the importance of the Bureau's Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program. Oil, the indispensable material of wartime, likewise has critical importance in peacetime, touching as it does the life of every individual. Supplementing petroleum with synthetic liquid fuels will not only conserve this Nation's petroleum reserves but also will bring into greater use its tremendous reserves of coal, as well as the vast deposits of oil shale for which no other practical use has yet been found.The Bureau of Mines Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program is one of the most important and far-reaching of the Government's research projects. Through development, of commercial synthetic liquid fuels, the United States can obtain oil products from its great inland reserves of coal and oil shale to supplement petroleum in any quantity that may be necessary, consistent with economic and other requirements, such as national defense. The use of raw materials from such deposits would be of highest importance in wartime, when shipping lanes are menaced by the enemy. The Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program of the Bureau of Mines and research efforts of industry have advanced American technology to the point where it is now possible to begin the design and construction of prototype plants. Certainly, significant improvements will be made as the program continues, but this prospect in no way alters the fact that the start of prototype plants should be encouraged. These plants, as the first step in the development of a synthetic fuels industry, would serve a threefold purpose:"

This document describes the development of a conventional mining equipment data base, and an approach for conducting industrial engineering studies of arbitrary mining systems employing network techniques. Data was acquired through underground time studies. Each member of a four-man field team was assigned to a specific machine during each shift for which observations were conducted. Using digital wrist watches and networks describing the man-machine interactions, all events occurring luring the course of each shift were recorded on cassette tapes. The tapes were transcribed, coded, keypunched, and validated using computerized editing techniques. The resulting data files were processed to provide statistics relating to activity durations and event frequencies. The results were used to evaluate operator, machine, and system performance for each section which was observed. Equipment, reliability, and maintainability analyses were conducted using the industrial engineering data files in conjunction with historical information collected at the mine site.

This paper discusses the design, construction, and performance of the support of excavation system used at The Atlantic Building jobsite. The support of excavation system had to be adaptable to the different conditions surrounding the site. These conditions included support of four historic building façades, including the nine-story Atlantic Building, as well as support of three historic row-houses along two walls. Directly adjacent to the site is the historic Ford?s Theatre and townhouse. Across a 15? alley is the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) Building, and across a 30? alley is the Federal Election Commission Building and another ongoing excavation. Of historical note, these two alleys were the escape route for John Wilkes Booth following his assassination of President Lincoln. With the excavation being 53? to 58? deep, the system included driven and drilled soldier piles, drilled bracket piles, and two modified tangent walls. The bracing included tiebacks, corner braces, wales, cross lot struts, and a specially designed support system for the nine-story façade. The footprint of the excavation included 12 corners and all alleys and streets were to remain open during construction. The performance requirements for system movement at Ford?s Theatre and AILA Building were ½ inches in the horizontal direction. The modified tangent walls were used in these areas to provide stiffness. The soil conditions at the site were fill material on top of a shallow, sandy, silty, gravel layer on top of a deep layer of soft organic silt and clay. Below the silt and clay layer was fine sandy material at the subgrade.

The gold-scheelite-quartz lodes of the Wakamarina valley were the most productive of the mesothermal gold-bearing areas in the Marlborough Schist. Most of the production came from the Empire City and Golden Bar mines which worked the Golden Bar lode. Only 134 m of its 1800 m strike length are accessible, in the No.2 level of the Golden Bar Mine. A fault has downthrown the Golden Bar Mine section by = 47 m and displaced it left-laterally by 18 m. The lode is a typical ribbon-banded mesothermal vein, averaging c. 1.75 m wide, and enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. It is composed of bands of milky æbuckÆ quartz with thin laminae of schist. Scheelite occurs in short strings of grains within quartz on the footwall side of the lode and also in small quartz-carbonate veinlets in the foot wall and hanging wall schist. The lode quartz contains only localised traces of pyrite and arsenopyrite. They are more abundant in the wall-rock schist.   The Golden Bar lode lies within a steeply dipping normal fault, which, on its footwall side, is adjacent to a 40 m-wide, shallow-dipping mylonite shear zone. Within 1 m of the lode, the shear foliation has been dragged down to nearly parallel the lode footwall. Wall rock alteration is manifested by a marked increase in K and Rb, which correlate with abundant illite/muscovite and K-feldspar within 2 m of the footwall of the lode. Amphibole, stilpnomelane, and pumpellyite show a progressive decrease towards the lode. As and Sb increase close to the lode, but are at background levels within the lode itself. Enhanced Cr (150-430 ppm) in the quartz, relative to the schists (~40 ppm), suggests that the source hydrothermal fluids passed through and leached mafic rocks, such as the metabasites from the hanging wall of the lode (~400 ppm Cr).

IN the middle of the eighteenth century John Frazier and wife, Sarah Ingraham, removed from Boston, Mass., to Philadelphia, Pa., where he was held in such esteem that we find him one of the Committee which arranged the ball at Washington's inauguration. Their son John. Nalbro Frazier, was prosperous in his mercantile career and fortunate in his wife, .Anne West; who was an important personage in the early life of Professor Frazier. This cultured lady brought into the family an atmosphere of religious enthusiasm, of thoroughness and: of unity of purpose. Her son, Benjamin West Frazier, inherited her traits and displayed them during a. short and active life. Like his father, he engaged in mercantile pursuits, and was a member of the firm of Zimmerman, Frazier & Co. In their interests he lived for a short- time in Montevideo, and on his return married Isabella Zimmerman, a daughter of the head of the firm. Their happy married life was cut short by the death of Mrs. Frazier shortly after the birth of the subject of this sketch which, occurred October 3, 1841. Mr. Frazier did not long survive her, and left his orphaned sons to, the care of his mother, from whom he had inherited a lovable and deeply religious nature, an : artistic temperament and a capacity for thorough work. Whatever of these traits fell by inheritance to these children were strengthened by the influence of their grandmother, and. the purity of mind, the delicacy of sentiment, the refinement of honor, which characterized. Professor Frazier, are due to Anne West Frazier, and are generally present in the characters of all of gentle blood who have been under the sole and immediate influence of a mature and refined woman. A laboratory investigation was carried out on the characterization and beneficiation of sillimanite ore. Petrographic analysis indicated that the ore consisted of massive elongated sillimanite grains in a matrix of hematite, garnet, feldspar and silica. A procedure for estimating the percentage of sillimanite was developed using float-sink and magnetic-separation techniques. A liberation study was carried out to determine the level of size reduction required to achieve sufficient liberation while ensuring that gravity concentration techniques would be applicable. Laboratory testing was performed on the liberated ore to investigate the applicability of using wide-angle dense-medium cycloning to upgrade this ore. Initially, medium-only tests were carried out using various size distributions of magnetite and ferrosilicon as the dense-medium solids to evaluate the effects of operating conditions on medium segregation. Depending on the medium solids and operating conditions, either positive of negative differentials (difference between the relative densities of the underflow and overflow streams) were obtained. Based on these results, separation tests were performed to process nominal -1.2-mm sillimanite ore. The results indicated that sillimanite concentration could be obtained using a medium relative density that was much lower than would typically be used in a dense-medium cyclone separation.

The Bureau of Mines' Oil Shale Data- Bank (OSDB) was created in 1976 to serve as a centralized source for the storage, retrieval, and dissemination of technical literature, patents, and information on research projects in oil shale. Thousands of bibliographic references, patents, and research projects relating to the mining of oil shale have been identified, abstracted, and indexed according to selected keyword topics. The resulting data bank listings are contained in three sections, each with a separate keyword breakdown for use in rapidly identifying references pertaining to a specific subject. All references cited in the OSDB were published prior to an established cut-off date of May 1, 1981, when a redirection of Bureau of Mines programs resulted in the loss of project funds and the subsequent phasing-out of data bank operations. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The oil shale data bank listings are the result of a team effort of the project staff. The contributions of Jimaleen Jansma for keypunching, information acquisition, and data entry, and John Brandenburg and Sandra Brake for keywording and information acquisition are gratefully acknowledged. This report presents the results of a three-phase investigation of the feasibility of using cemented coal waste in active underground coal mines to prevent mine subsidence. Coal caste was broadly defines to include waste from both coal preparation plants and coal-fired power plants. Underground systems with potential for cemented backfill are determined through identification of current mining methods and available technologies for cemented backfilling and consideration of materials and systems constraints upon mining and backfilling integration technical concerns including operation, health and safety, materials utilization, environmental impact, applicability and techni¬cal status are assessed for six (6) systems which were identified as potentially feasible. Two (2) of these systems are conceptualized in a hypothetical case history and developed to further assess their operational and economic feasibility. Comparisons of costs among both systems and with costs of surface disposal are presented. Also presented are the conclusions reached concerning the present feasibility of using cemented backfill in active coal mines and potential avenues for further research. Appendices contain further consideration for design of cemented mixtures to be used in backfilling, the results of laboratory testing of mixtures rich varying concentrations c: waste products and cementing agents, and an annealed bibliography

A study was made of the instrumentation and technique of atomic absorption spectroscopy developed by Walsh of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (C.S.I.R.O.), Australia.The method was evaluated for the determination of silver in lead sulphide concentrate. The precision of the procedure developed is equal to that of the uncorrected fire assay method and the accuracy is greater.Brief mention is made of the use of this technique for the determination of silver and other elements in ores and concentrator products.INTRODUCTIONThe fire assay method, although accepted on a world-wide basis as the umpire method for the determination of silver in ores and concentrates, is freely recognized as yielding results which are lower than actual due to unavoidable losses.King (1934) investigated the influence of the cupelshape, size and material on silver losses during cupellation. Using 100 mg silver prills he recorded silver losses ranging between l. and 10 per cent under extreme conditions and averaging approximately 2 percent under conditions which might be considered normal. Guerin (1957) made a detailed study, under carefully controlled conditions in a furnace similar to that described by Esdaile (1952), of the effect of temperature on silver losses during cupellation. One of the chief drawbacks to Bendigo mining always has been the difficulty of draining the mines in an equitable manner, so that each company or mine owner bears the properly share. The trouble seems to have been apparent on this field since the diggings were discovered. One mine would push on more expeditiously than its neighbour in looking for the precious metal and sink its shaft, whilst those in the vicinity would simply potter about, and discontinue sinking until gold was struck in the deeper ground, and: then they would go ahead, start sinking, while the pioneer would have to pump all or most of their water. This sort of thing continued here for years until the leases were worked down to the very deep ground and the water became such a b.urden on those companies that had deep shafts, that first one stopped hauiing and then others; with the result that over 1000 feet of water was allowed to accumulate on the New Chum line. lt appeared that if something were not done the whole of the main line of reef in the Bendigo district would be at a standstill, when a scheme was formulated and handed to Mr. Lansell, who, with other gentlemen, took the matter up, and at the present time all the mines on that particular portion of reef are in full work and the water all bailed out.lt is this scheme that I am requested to place before you and also to give you the details of the work done since its adoption.

Large amounts of manganese-rich slag were generated from smelting low-grade manganese ore containing high iron and high phosphorus in electric furnace or blast furnace, which contain 25–40 mass% Mn. This paper describes an efficient hydrometallurgical process for the utilization of high manganese slag instead of conventional usage of pyrometallurgical route for manganese recovery. Pressure acid leaching of manganese-rich slag using air as pressurized gas is studied systematically. The effects of mass ratio of manganese-rich slag to pyrite, concentration of sulfuric acid, leaching temperature, partial air pressure, leaching time, and liquid-solid (L/S) ratio on the separation of manganese with other main impurity components were investigated comprehensively. Under the following optimal process conditions, weight of manganese-rich slag powder,100 g; mass ratio of manganese-rich slag to pyrite, 20:1; sulfuric acid concentration of 140 g/L; air pressure of 0.6 MPa; leaching temperature of 140 °C; leaching time of 1 h; L/S of 7:1; ore size of 75–80 μm; and stirring rate of 600 rpm, the extraction rate of Mn reached 94%, and the dissolution percentage of Si, Al, and Fe are as low as 2%, 6%, and 10%, respectively. The leaching slurry presented a good solid-liquid separation characteristic. The silicic acid formed during sulfuric acid leaching manganese silicates was converted to filterable dehydrated SiO2 particles which precipitated in the residue under the condition of higher temperature with higher pressure. The effect of adding pyrite may be to reduced iron ions and decreased the output of iron hydroxide colloid and also reduced MnO2 to manganese sulfate in sulfuric acid leaching. Thus the formation possibility of colloid such as silica gel and iron hydroxide was decreased, and higher yield of manganese sulfate could be achieved.

Iron ores associated with the Oriskany formation extend from the West Virginia border to the southwestern corner of Virginia. The deposits have been mined at many places, and the district is credited with the production of approximately 13,000,000 tons of ore to 1925, when mining operations ceased (fig. 1). The Oriskany iron-ore deposits occur in the Alleghany Mountains throughout their extent in the State. The name Oriskany was originally given to the limonite ore that was supposed to occur in the Oriskany sand-stone. At present, the name applies to all iron-ore deposits occurring in the lower part of the Devonian shale, Oriskany sandstone, and Helderberg limestone. The principal ore-bearing minerals are goethite and limonite. This report deals principally with the occurrences in Allegheny, Bath, Botetourt, and Craig Counties, Va. The Bureau of Mines, as part of the strategic-minerals program, began a project to develop the reserves of the area in November 1943; and continued until December 1944. Work started near Oriskany and extended northeast for nearly three-fourths of the area of the more important deposits. During the program 163 holes were drilled, totaling 11,651 feet; 256 feet of prospect tunnels were driven; 1,346 samples were collected; beneficiation tests were performed; and bulldozer trails and trenches wore excavated. The work served to delimit and appreciably extend the reserves of several areas. Analyses of channel samples are -given in appendix A, and diamond-drill and churn-drill hole logs and sample analyses are given in appendixes B and C, respectively.

The applicability of the Q-system [Barton et al. 1974] to Australian underground metal mines is discussed with reference to two common design issues: ground support for horizontal mine development, and assessing the stability of bored raises. Installed ground support in mine development is com-pared to empirical estimates using the Q-system and associated support capacity calculations. Data are graphically presented from 59 specially selected sites at 15 contributing mines. The actual performance of large-diameter raise-bored shafts is also compared to empirical stability assessments using a modified version of Q (Qr, after McCracken and Stacey [1989]). Lower-bound Qr values are plotted against raise diameter for 47 selected sites at 23 mines in Australia and Papua New Guinea. The influence on Q and Qr of some geotechnical aspects of the Australian landscape, the dynamic nature of mines (compared to civil construction), and occupational health and safety regulations are discussed. Stability and support assessments that are based just on Q or Qr are not always conclusive. It is often necessary to consider other rock mass parameters, the regulatory environment, and risk issues. These results are interim; further data collection and analysis are required with regard to comparing actual performance versus empirical assessments.

Scheelite, the most abundant tungsten mineral in the Philipsburg region of Montana, is found in replacement deposits and along fissures and cracks in limestone at various distances from contacts with acidic igneous rocks. It also occurs at the limestone-igneous contacts, but typical garnet tactites are developed in only a few places in the region. The most favorable host rocks for scheelite mineralization are the Jefferson, Hasmark, and Madison limestones. Scheelite is exposed in float, outcrops, and surface and mine workings along a 2-mile-wide belt extending southwest from Lost Creek beyond Silver Lake, a distance of 15 miles or more. (See fig. 1.) Some scheelite is found in veins formerly mined for silver. Powellite and molybdenite occasionally are present with the scheelite. Hubnerite occurs in quartz veins in the Black Pine area 10 miles northwest of Philipsburg. These quartz veins occur in the quartzites of the Precambrian Spokane formation. Tungsten production in the region has come almost exclusively from scheelite deposits, both lode and placer. During a 6-year period beginning in 1943 a total of 142.0 tons of 63-percent W03 concentrate was produced by H & H Mines Co. In the early 1950's, the Trigger mine produced 4,000 tons of 1-percent W03 ore and the Tip Top 650 tons of 2.0-percent W03 ore and 2,906 tons of 2.2-percent ore. There has been sporadic production from some of the smaller properties in the area.

Paper presented at the conference: Risk assessment in the extractive industries, held in Exeter, UK, 23-24 March 1994, and first published London: IMM, 1994, preprint volume, 20pp., 31 refs. Estimates of coal tonnage on UK open cast mining sites often vary from the recoverable tonnage. This is because the estimates depend on the geological variability of the coal measures. Geological parameters, such as thickness, quality and disturbance of the seam, have a direct control upon this variance. Risk analysis techniques have been applied using commercially available software to combine each parameter's variability into a cumulative variance, resulting in a tonnage distribution. Sensitivity modelling has also been used to identify the geological parameters which have the largest influence on the variance of the simulated tonnage distribution. An understanding of the relationship between the tonnage and geological variability has helped to focus exploration more efficiently. A cost to risk relationship can now be monitored, helping management to avoid negative consequences on site

This report describes the results of a study to determine which types of, and to what extent, mining wastes can contaminate groundwater through leaching of acid-forming or potentially toxic constituents. The primary focus of this study was on coal mining wastes, especially overburden spoils and preparation plant refuse. In addition, the potential for contamination by leachates from clean coal stockpiles was also examined. The study approach included investigation of (a) the amounts and geographic locations of mining wastes in the United States; (b) the chemical character of mining wastes, especially with regard to potentially acid-firming or toxic constituents; and (c) the extent to which acid and/or toxic components are leached from mining wastes by rainwater. To evaluate the leachability of coal wastes, a laboratory waste leaching method was developed during this study to specifically simulate the leaching process over a long-term. Waste samples collected during this study were also leached by the EPA extraction procedure and ASTM waste leaching method. Results of the three leach test methods were compared to evaluate their relative capabilities to predict the leachability of mining wastes.

This report describes the work done to develop a coal mining machine to increase productivity and recovery from thin seams beyond the highwall, in addition to decreasing the miner's susceptibility to to highwall hazards First, radar transducers were adapted to measure coal thinkness and detect rock and coal interfaces; Then, the radar was incorporated into a cutterhead with steering controls. Next, visual displays were designed to show cutter position in the coal seam, and anticipated change in coal seam inclination, Finally, development of a telemetry system made remote control of the cutterhead possible. Simultaneously, a high-performance extended depth (HPxD) auger machine was designed with an automatic system to handle 600 ft of 36-in, diameter dual spiral flight conveyor sections. A two man crew controls all operations from a weather conditioned cab outside the VDZ, either at night or day time. As a primary mining tool, working 4000 hr/yr (2 shifts/day) recovering 60% of the coal 600 ft beyond the highwall, productlon to 500,000 ton/yr can be achieved.
