INTRODUCTION A number of tunnels supported and permanently lined by steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) have been built in North America in the 1980s. The material is more economical than, and technically equal or superior to, conventional shotcrete using wire mesh. The design and construction of SFRS-lined tunnels is straightforward, and only a few new design principles, laboratory tests or construction equipment modifications appear necessary in order to use this material. Modern tunnel Contractors may use cyclic drill-and-blast methods on some tunnels, with intermittent shotcreting as part of an orderly cycle. The Dry Mix method is most suitable for cyclic, intermittent, relatively small-scale shotcreting. However, modern Contractors excavating tunnels continuously using large long Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) or Roadheaders may prefer Wet Mix shotcreting on a mass production basis. In either case, the use of steel-fiber-rein¬forced shotcrete (SFRS) promotes the rapid and economical excavation of tunnels. The addition of microsilica will improve SFRS properties and reduce rebound, and is expected to become standard practice with SFRS in North America, as it now is in Scandinavia. HISTORICAL REVIEW Steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) at the present time (1985) is essentially conventional shotcrete with straight or deformed steel fibers added, and in general SFRS for tunnel linings encounters the same problems that conventional shotcrete does. Nowadays more infrastructure tunnel projects are procured using design-build method. In this environment, the Owner’s engineer would typically provide performance requirements for the design-builder, and the Contractor’s designer would work with the contractor to design the tunnel lining based on the Contractor’s means and methods and manufacturing process. This paper will describe the typical requirements provided by the Owner based on its design objectives, and the means and methods by the Contractor that would significantly impact the design. Project examples and recommendations for Owner’s requirements will be provided that can optimize the design and still achieve the Owner’s performance objectives.

The war in Vietnam stretched into another decade, an American President was at the brink of impeachment, the earth was given its own day, twin tower monuments of American ingenuity were completed in New York and would stand high above the Manhattan skyline for 31 years. Inflation, oil shortages, low commodity prices and America’s 200th birthday were part of the decade — it was the 1970s. For the mining industry, the demands of the decade would be high and the challenges would be significant. Because of the many challenges that lined up in front of it, the mining industry was forced to work smarter and more efficiently. The industry also expanded its borders in search of new resources and struggled along with the rest of the world through a fuel crisis, inflation and a recession.

This paper describes a number of aspects of the design and construction of a driven tunnel which forms part of the Boggo Road Busway project. The driven tunnel is 430m long with an excavated width of 15m and a full tunnel excavation height of 8m. The first section of driven tunnel was excavated under the heritage listed Boggo Road Jail for a length of 120m. The main jail buildings and perimeter walls were built in 1908 and are of brick construction. Ground cover over the tunnel beneath the jail site varied from 5.5m to 8m and as a consequence the predicted settlement values and their potential to cause damage to the buildings were critical to determining and obtaining approval for the selected tunnel alignment. The geology along the driven tunnel alignment was very variable, providing mixed face tunneling conditions and ranging from surface residual soils to high strength rock at depth. The maximum ground cover above the driven tunnel is 20m.

Tellurium is a high-tech and also toxic element. This element shows sufficient contents in Fe-Mn crusts and nodules in the modern ocean to be involved in future industrial processes [Hein et al., 2003]. Tellurium minerals and contents are not well recorded in modern and ancient black smoker systems. Tellurides are rarely found in sulfides from the modern oceans [Iizasa et al. 1992; Maslennikov et al., 2010]. The previous common opinion that tellurium is scarce in active seafloor hydrothermal systems can be revised due to the recent discovery of abundant tellurides in chimneys from Brothers Volcano vent site [Berkenbosch et al., 2012]. We found abundant tellurobismuthite, hessite, and native tellurium in chimneys from Su Su Knoll vents sites (West Pacific). So, tellurides can be found in some chimneys but absent in others. The causes of this are poorly understood. These conflicting data create numerous questions and require an explanation. The problem can be resolved by research at different scales including analysis of relevant genetic features of host sequences, systematic textural and paragenetic studies of different types of chimneys, and their rare mineral assemblages. Paragenetic models, compositional analyses and ranges of tellurium-bearing minerals and the physicochemical interpretation of chimney diversity in different types of VMS deposits are the main subjects of our research. The data on tellurides in chimneys from ancient VMS deposits should also be useful to resolve this problem.

The gangue in some magnetite ore bodies contains feldspar; the alkali content of the feldspar reduces the usefulness of these iron ores. One method of decreasing the feldspar content in magnetite concentrate is froth flotation. The amine flotation of feldspar from magnetite concentrate was investigated using zeta potential measurements, Hallimond tube flotation tests and laboratory-scale flotation tests. The zeta potential of various feldspars (microcline, albite, anorthite, oliqoclase and anorthoclase) were determined as a function of pH; the point of zero charge ranged from pH 1.4 to 2.5. Hallimond tube flotation tests using two amine reagents were conducted on the feldspars. Hallimond tube flotation tests using six amine flotation reagents were performed on the cobber tails (quartz, albite and microcline) from a magnetite concentrating plant; in all cases, over 85 percent flotation recovery was obtained at pH 8 and 10-5 to 10-4 [M] collector addition. Laboratory-scale (667 grams) flotation tests were performed on the magnetite concentrate in an attempt to float the feldspar which had reported to the concentrate. The effects of three different collectors, two levels of collector concentration, three pH levels, starch and HF acid were investigated.

Silver Bell produces about 22,000T of fine copper annually from low-grade chalcocite and oxidized copper ore that is recovered by sulfuric acid leaching and SX-EW processing. The current mineable reserves are 146 million short tons averaging 0.39% Cu, at a 0.15% cutoff. Silver Bell utilizes two types of mining methods to develop the low-grade reserves: (1) a conventional blast, load and haul method for run-of-mine leach ore, and (2) rubblization of material on the margins of existing pits. Rubble leach ore is blasted, terraced with a bulldozer, and leached in place. Mining and/or rubble leaching is currently active in four separate pits. Laramide-age intrusive rocks host porphyry copper mineralization at Silver Bell. Quartz monzonite porphyry dikes and stocks, mafic-poor equigranular granite (alaskite), and sub-volcanic dacite porphyry are the predominant host rocks. Most of the ore currently mined comes from near-horizontal enrichment zones containing veinlets and disseminated grains of pyrite and chalcopyrite rimmed by chalcocite. Conversion from a milling operation to a leach only operation allowed for a much lower cutoff grade than was historically used at Silver Bell. Mine geologists were able to increase copper resources by drilling exploration targets that were previously interpreted to provide lower-grade mineralization below cutoff-grade for milling. Geologic parameters that effect the distribution of rubble and mineable leach ore include: ore grade and thickness, variable alteration styles in intrusive host rocks that affect fragmentation during blasting, acid consuming carbonate wallrocks (reactive skarn) which influence leach solution pH, solution flow paths and drainage, presence of leachable oxide mineralization in non-reactive skarn, and depth to hypogene mineralization which is currently uneconomic. Geologic parameters are used to predict rubble bench limits, vary blast hole spacing for consistent fragmentation, and correct errors in mineral zone classification based solely on blast hole assays. An expansion-drilling program has identified approximately 150 million tons of new leachable copper resources with an average grade of 0.35% Cu.

Award of the Design/Build Agreement for construction of Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG’s) Niagara Tunnel Project was made after an intensive 8-month international procurement process. The 14.4-m diameter × 10.4-km long rock tunnel will divert 500 m3/s of water from the Niagara River to the Sir Adam Beck hydroelectric generating complex. The procurement process and Design/Build Agreement included features to address the owner’s requirements regarding risk allocation and cost and schedule certainty, while encouraging innovative ideas from the industry, both technically and commercially. The process included an international expression of interest and prequalification, followed by an invitation for design/build proposals to qualified proponents, and comprehensive proposal evaluations and negotiations with several respondent proponents. An honorarium was provided to the unsuccessful participants in the proposal stage. The resultant negotiated Design/Build Agreement includes Owner’s Mandatory Requirements, negotiated contract terms and conditions, performanceincentive bonuses and liquidated damages for schedule and water delivery performance, a multistaged Geotechnical Baseline Report, joint risk management, references to preexisting community impact agreements and measures to reduce impact on tourism. It also addresses regulatory approvals and permits, an owner controlled insurance policy that required reference to the International Tunneling Insurance Group (ITIG) Code of Practice for Risk Management as a condition of coverage, site specific safety, security and environmental plans, formal team building, a dispute review board, and escrow documentation.

The main train station of Leipzig in Germany is currently being upgraded from a head station to a partially thru station. In order to achieve this, significant ground improvements are necessary. Soil freezing for example is used to create the excavation box retaining walls. The freezing works will be carried out from two tunnels with an inner diameter of 2.4 m (~ 8ft). The tunnels were constructed by the pipe jacking method. The cutter head of the machine was equipped with discs and scrapers. Driving and excavation was carried out using a bentonite supported face. Due to the small arrival shafts, the machine had to be lifted out in components. The essential limitation of settlements during the drives was achieved even better than expected.

"Lithium is a silver-white alkali metal that has recently become a target commodity for many junior mining companies. Lithium has a wide range of applications including ceramics and glass, lubricating greases, air treatment, continuous cast mold flux powders, polymer production, and primary aluminium production, but the current popularity of lithium can be attributed to an anticipated increase in demand for lithium ion batteries. The most common lithium-bearing minerals occur globally in pegmatites and granites. Spodumene [LiAl(Si2O6)] is the most desirable economic lithium-bearing mineral due to its high lithium content (theoretical Li2O content of about 8 wt%). However, lithium can also be hosted in petalite, micas, tourmaline, and phosphate minerals. In Canada there are a number of spodumene deposits in Ontario and Quebec at development stage that have the potential to help narrow the forecast lithium supply gap stemming from the widespread acceptance and use of electric vehicles. This paper discusses the beneficiation of hard rock lithium deposits, including an in depth review of the use of flotation to upgrade spodumene. A review of the use of dense media separation (DMS), magnetic separation, and roasting as means to process spodumene bearing ores is also discussed. INTRODUCTION Lithium is a soft, silver-white alkali metal with atomic number 3. As of 2015, the end use of lithium was estimated to be as follows: lithium-ion batteries (35%), ceramics and glass (32%), lubricating greases (9%), air treatment (5%), continuous casting mould flux powders (5%), polymer production (4%), primary aluminium production (1%) and other uses (9%) (Jaskula, 2014). Lithium is found in brine lake deposits containing lithium chloride and in hard rock pegmatite deposits. It can be sold in a range of product types; as mineral concentrate, brine, compound (lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide) and metal depending on its intended end use (Goonan, 2012; Jaskula 2014). In the 1990s the United States and Chile were the largest producers of lithium globally, primarily from brine operations (Ober, 1994). Most of the lithium compounds produced over this period were consumed in the glass, ceramics and aluminium industries. In the 1980s and 1990s there were two major lithium operations in the United States: brine operations at Silver Peak, Nevada, and a spodumene mine and lithium carbonate/lithium hydroxide plant in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. The Kings Mountain operations ceased production in 1991 and were eventually dismantled in 1994. Brine operations were also active in Argentina and Chile, while the largest lithium ore deposit in the world was operated at Greenbushes, Western Australia. During this period it was predicted that major shifts in demand for lithium would come from the success and widespread use of electric vehicles (Ober, 1994)."

Introduction Shale Mining Problems The mining problems an oil shale operator will face are largely determined by the process. Candidate oil recovery processes are surface (above ground processing of mined oil shale), modified in situ (underground with some shale removed), and true in situ (completely underground with no shale removed). The shale removed for modified in situ (MIS) is generally processed by surface techniques. The mining problems are different for each category. Fig. 1 depicts the diversity of western shale deposits. Mining for surface operations will employ underground mining techniques in common use but the scale will be larger. A typical oil shale operation is expected to require 75,000 to 250,000 st (68 000 to 226 800 tons) a stream day of crushed oil shale. This is above the upper limit of current mining operations. Major problems include: (1) lack of good engineering design properties for oil shale, especially when interbedded with saline minerals at depths below 1,000 ft (305 m); (2) presence of water, hydrogen sulfide, and methane in some areas; (3) necessity for mine disposal of as much retorted oil shale waste as possible; and (4) control of environmental impacts of mining. Portions of the oil shale deposits in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah and significant portions of the Devonian shales in the eastern U.S. are adapted to surface mining. No major technological problems are apparent outside overburden thicknesses up to 1,000 ft in the West. However, numerous political and environmental difficulties have arisen. One major oil shale developer cancelled a planned surface mining operation and currently is pursuing a modified in-situ plan. The eastern shales are closer to the surface than the western, but suffer from many of the same environmental and political problems. Modified in-situ operations face much more severe mining problems than surface efforts. Because the mined stope (called an in-situ "retort" by processors) acts as a retorting process vessel subject to gas flow, combustion, and temperatures between 1,500° and 2,000°F, mining is under highly restrictive limitations. This processing method involves removing between 20 and 40% of the shale deposit and then blasting the roof and walls into the mined space, where the oil is recovered by retorting. Major problems are: (1) swell factor severely limited; (2) need for consistent size distribution of blasted shale; (3) even filling of stope (in-situ retort) by blasted shale with consistent permeability throughout; (4) scaleup of blasting techniques, after optimization; (5) protection of retort pillars and roof during and after retorting; (6) prevention of groundwater percolation; (7)use of ANFO explosive in wet holes; (8) disposing of surface-retorted shale waste in stope; and (9) restoration of site. Increasing use of pressurized-face tunnel boring machines in North America has produced a similar increase in the application of precast concrete tunnel linings. Where a pressurized TBM is needed, immediate ground support and ground water pressure resistance is also required. A segmental lining installed within the TBM tail shield provides the only available means of providing such a sealed lining. This paper addresses new developments in North America in lining applications and design. For the purposes of this paper, a precast concrete tunnel lining is defined as a tunnel lining constructed using precast concrete segments that are assembled into a lining ring. The lining rings are connected adjacent to each other to form a tunnel lining. Each segment has a sealing gasket around it so that when the lining is completed, it provides a fully waterproof lining system. The ring is erected within the tail shield of the TBM and the annular gap around the ring is filled with grout as the machine moves forward. The ring is not expanded and normally provides the finished lining of the tunnel with no requirement for a second pass lining. The TBM has a series of hydraulic rams that push on the leading edge of the segmental lining to provide the sole system of forward propulsion for the machine. The rings are tapered, being longer on one side than the other. This allows the rings to be installed either on a curve or in a straight line depending on the rotational position of the rings.

"History can provide many answers with regard to what today’s mining industry looks like and how we got to where we are today. It has always been self-evident that safety has to be given the highest priority and, throughout history, many mine workers have been injured, become ill and have even sacrificed their lives due to the way in which attempts have been made to extract the ore, often due to ignorance of the dangers being faced. In more recent stages of history we have seen certain dangers being compensated by means of higher wages and bonus systems in order to have the work carried out: one example of this is when the rock heating method was employed and the men who first went underground to put out the fires that were burning, were paid extra. The working conditions, to which these people were exposed, with smoke-filled closed spaces, shortened their life expectancy considerably and today we can ask ourselves whether it is really possible to value these efforts just by higher wages. In all mines worldwide the working environment has been improved and many mining companies have a zero vision where work-related injuries and accidents are concerned. Despite this, incidents of varying severity still occur and a continuous improvement process and ongoing training is necessary in order to constantly minimise risks and improve the working environment. Atlas Copco takes this into account in all its development and we not only review our own production units but also the needs of our customers, with regard to the machinery that is produced in order to cater for customers’ safety and production objectives. Underground mining probably started at the beginning of the 11th century when people with modest tools tried to extract ores that were present in the bedrock. Methodology has developed enormously over the years with a strong focus on increased efficiency and higher production. In different parts of the world the development is driven forwards at different rates depending on which controlling factors are regarded as necessary. Political decisions, profit goals and productivity have partly controlled the development, but the greatest factor where improvement is concerned still remains with increased understanding of the totality. During more than 1000 years since underground mining has been conducted, all individuals at all levels have constantly improved their expertise and the human element has been of great importance with regard to the development that has been made, even though technology often occupies a leading role when we describe the improvements made."

Increased coal production on longwalls has brought with it higher levels of dust generation. Most U.S. longwall mining operators have difficulty complying with Federal dust standards, which are stricter than European standards. Longwall operators faced with a longwall that is "out of compliance" have implemented a variety of practices designed to reduce dust levels. Mining conditions and other important variables, however, can cause fluctuations in dust levels that may overshadow the performance of a new dust control technique. This can result in the continued use of an ineffective technique or lead to the abandonment of an effective dust control technique. No single technique can keep a longwall in compliance. Maintaining compliance requires a fundamental approach to dust control -- proper application and continued use of effective dust control techniques.

This paper will discuss how the construction management team and the contractor working together on the City of Los Angeles, North East Interceptor Sewer project, managed information on a daily basis. Data was synthesized from various sources including: inspection, survey, instrumentation, laboratory and the tunnel boring machine data logger systems to produce state-of-the-art reports and graphics which will become industry standard. Special emphasis is placed on how the data is managed and interpreted in a clear and objective manner, permitting the tunneling processes to be carefully monitored and suggesting appropriate action to be taken by the construction management team and contractor.

Microcomputer technology has begun to revolutionize petroleum engineering. Petroleum engineers' use of relatively inexpensive personal computers (PC's) is likely to continue expanding rapidly. Since 1982 SPE's Microcomputer Applications Committee has developed a Society-wide users group, a bi-monthly newsletter (MICROCOMP NEWS), an SPE Short Course, a hardware and software distribution program, and a world wide electronic network (SPE NET). The purpose of this paper is to share SPE's experience in creating a dynamic program for meeting the individual member's need in the application of microcomputers to petroleum engineering. My hope is that this will encourage other engineering and scientific organizations to provide similar programs for their members.

Information gathered while studying geological parameters that govern fine gold deposition in the a1luvial environment can be applied to the technological development and selection of fine gold recovery systems. It is recognized that substantial gold losses occur in the minus 1.5 mn (minus 12 mesh) fraction using conventional sluicing systems. Within the past two decades much attention has been given the design and efficiency of these thick bed concentrators. Studies and comparisons drew information from several foreign and domestic placer operations. These studies concentrated on: 1) the physical and chemical properties of alluvial gold 2) the parameters that control fine gold deposition 3) the geometrical form, components and general working structure of conventional sluicing systems 4) the physical properties which contribute to the overall efficiency of a sluice system 5) the comparison of three major styles of conventional sluicing systems. A dramatic improvement regarding fine gold recovery and water quality was observed when using modern multiple-channel sluicing systems in place of conventional single-channel sluicing systems.
