Since 1993 Cyprus Amax has brought $2.5 billion dollars of greenfield and expansion projects into production, taking it from a mid-sized domestic minerals company into a major international minerals organization. The near simultaneous development of these multiple mineral projects in different locations around the world provided the opportunity for Cyprus Amax to develop a formal project management approach based, in large part, on an outsourcing philosophy. This formal project management system along with its outsourcing philosophy has served the growth agenda of Cyprus Amax extremely well. These preceding factors, coupled with the in-house retention of a core project group that fully understands the breadth of skills and abilities needed to undertake development of multiple large projects successfully, have been the cornerstone of Cyprus Amax’s project development success.

The advent of the more efficient and effective rare-earth roll (RER) separator in the early 1980?s began a new era of dry magnetic separation. The RER units quickly became the separator of choice within the materials processing industry. Though RER separators are now commonplace throughout the world, only modest advancements have been made to the original design. This paper details recent, more significant, rare-earth magnetic separation developments. These developments maintain the best features of existing technology while minimizing shortcomings. The discussion includes discerning features that aid in better metallurgical performance. Also discussed are improved mechanical aspects that allow for both easier operation and maintenance. Performance details from various test programs are included.

Mine workers in heavy and dangerous work are under several physical risk factors, for example temperature, humidity, noise, vibration, lighting and air velocity. Thermal comfort includes parameters such as air temperature, air humidity, air flow rate, radiant heat, metabolic rate and garment insulation. In this study, thermal comfort conditions were evaluated using thermal comfort indices defined as predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage dissatisfied (PPD) which were determined by measurements taken from an underground coal mine for approximately 100 days. Although the metabolic rate (light work) was kept at 2 met, it was found that predicted mean vote ranged between − 2.58 and 1.68. The predicted percentage dissatisfied index was found to reach 95%. According to the results, it can be seen that thermal comfort may have negative effects on occupational health and safety. The change in thermal comfort index values in the Soma Underground Coal Mine was investigated in detail and the reasons for the changes were determined. Furthermore, determining the optimal working environment for the mine workers was also an aim of this study.

Eighteen coarse taconite tailings samples were collected in 2000-2001 from five western Mesabi Range taconite (iron ore) operations located in northern Minnesota, i.e., EVTAC, Hibbing Taconite (Hibtac), USX Minntac, Ispat Inland (Minorca), and National Steel Pellet Company (NSPC), to test their physical, geological, chemical, and mineralogical properties [Zanko, L.M., Niles, H.B., Oreskovich, J.A., 2003. Properties and aggregate potential of coarse taconite tailings from five Minnesota taconite operations, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Local Road Research Board, St. Paul, MN, Report No. 2004-06 (also as Natural Resources Research Institute technical report, NRRI/TR-2003/44)]. The goal was to assemble a body of technical data that could be used to better assess the potential of using a crushed taconite mining byproduct like coarse tailings for more widespread construction aggregate purposes, primarily in roads and high¬ways. An important part of the mineralogical assessment included X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses and microscopic (polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, i.e., PLM, SEM, and TEM, respectively) evaluation of the size and shape (morphological) characteristics of potentially respirable microscopic mineral particles and fragments. Quantitative mineralogy, based on XRD analyses, showed that the dominant mineral in all samples was quartz (55-60%), followed by much smaller amounts of iron oxides, carbonates, and silicates. Specialized microscopic analyses and testing performed by the RJ Lee Group, Monroeville, PA, on both pulverized (-200 mesh, or 0.075 mm) and as-is sample composites showed that no regulated asbestos minerals or amphibole minerals were detected in the western Mesabi Range samples. A small number (26) of non-asbestos and non¬amphibole mineral cleavage fragments/mineral fibers were detected by SEM out of 1000 fields analyzed, but most were identified as min¬nesotaite and talc, silicate minerals common to the Biwabik Iron Formation. Amphibole minerals, absent in coarse tailings samples from the five western Mesabi Range taconite operations, were present in a single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample collected in 2003 for Lake County from the Cliffs Northshore operation in Silver Bay, MN. Importantly, the Superfund Method for the Determination of Releasable Asbestos in Soils and Bulk Materials [United States Environ¬mental Protection Agency (USEPA), 1997. Superfund method for the determination of releasable asbestos in soils and bulk materials, EPA 540-R-97-028, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington], as modified by Berman and Kolk [Berman, D.W., Kolk, A.J., 2000. Modified elutriator method for the determination of asbestos in soils and bulk materials, Revision 1: Submitted to the U.S. Envi¬ronmental Protection Agency, Region 8, May 23, 2000] failed to generate any protocol fibers, i.e., fibers longer than 5 µm and thinner than 0.5 µm, from either the western coarse tailings samples or the single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample. The combined findings suggest coarse tailings and other taconite mining byproducts should be treated with the same common sense safety and industrial hygiene approach practiced for all mineral-based materials that have the potential to generate respirable dust. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2010 draws upon available information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2010: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2010, as compiled by the USGS, and 3) regional events including economic, social and political conditions that affected exploration activities. These were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists.

The concept of mine safety is highlighted in the literature of sustainable mining but not extensively discussed. This study analyzes various aspects of underground and surface mine safety and emphasizes its importance in the context of sustainable mining. More specifically, this research attempts to find the relationship between mine hazards and demographic characteristics, examine and compare the perceptual difference among miners, and determine the impact of mine hazards on workplace safety and safety climate. Descriptive analysis, chi-square test, independent samples t test, and linear regression modeling were conducted to achieve study objectives. Results confirmed that mine hazards were significantly associated with age and experience. Miners perceived lower levels of management safety practices, followed by supervisor safety, coworker safety, and job safety. The analysis showed that underground miners reported lower safety scores than surface miners. There was a statistically significant difference between miners’ perception of safety climate (p < 0.05). The results showed that the higher prevalence of mine hazards predicts poor workplace safety and a low safety climate. The regression models revealed that mine hazards have a significant effect on workplace safety (p < 0.05) and safety climate (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the distinctive model of mine safety presented here contributes to the monitoring and design of comprehensive safety interventions and helps to better understand how certain factors interact on multiple levels to influence the overall safety of the industry. In this study, some suggestions are put forward to provide directions to develop a sustainable mine safety system.

The basic operating characteristics of the wet, overflow rod mill are described, and significant operating variables are reviewed in terms of their effects on mill power draw, power efficiency, and practical aspects of circuit operation. Key factors for improving the economic performance of rod milling circuits are identified.

Upbeat, surprisingly so, might describe the mood at the2002 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Phoenix, AZ. More than 4,000 mineral professionals gathered for three days of education, networking and product perusal. The Annual Meeting featured the theme, “Minerals for the Future@ SME” at the Feb. 25-27 gathering. Meeting attendance reached 4,039along with 479 exhibit booths show-casing 325 companies. Exhibitors found a good mix of industry types:37% from mining, 19% from processing, 20% from manufacturing and 28% from environment, education and government.

Newmont Mining has a large, integrated gold-mining operation in northern Nevada with several mines, stockpiles and processing facilities. There are more than 90 defined metallurgical ore types and more than 60 defined gold-recovery process options. Newmont developed a mine plan and process model to take better advantage of the available synergies at its Nevada mines. This plan includes a mixed integer and linear programming optimization tool. This system is maintained and operated by a Nevada planning group. Standard in-house planning software tools and methods have been implemented at all mine sites. These changes have allowed a reduction in mine engineering staff and have increased the effectiveness of mine planning.

Secondary use of mined-out space in underground limestone quarries is emerging in the Kansas City area where abandoned quarry sites are being renovated into warehouses, factories, and offices. Mining techniques, ceiling heights, and pillar distribution are being altered as planning for the secondary use of mined-out space is combined with the quarrying process. Even the historic urban- quarry land use conflict invites a reappraisal in that this development provides a potential resolution of the problem. Mutual subsidization by dual rock and space interest is changing the economics of rock production. A city is much more than a surficial adjunct superimposed upon the topography of an area. Its development and growth are deeply rooted in the resources, benefits and problems of its underlying geology. The environmental geologist must address himself to more than the quality of a particular resource. He must comprehensively relate resource extraction and processing with the urban emphasis of optimal use which favors long term usage of land over one time economic ventures. Limestone quarrying, closely allied with the growth of many cities, has commonly left a series of scarred landscapes in the path of the burgeoning metropolis. These abandoned quarry sites are barriers to orderly city growth and fail to serve the people as useful and taxable land. Where quarries are functional, supplying the city with needed growth minerals, problems of blasting damage, noise, and dust exist. Technology faces the challenge of making mineral production and processing good neighbors to the urban market they serve. Continued growth of cities may require more efficient use of space below as well as above the surface optimizing land usage so that long term economic benefits may be reflected in improved mining methods.

The Allen Park Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) Tunnel and relief sewer project, located in the city of Allen Park, MI, is a long-term corrective action designed to bring Sanitary District One?s sanitary system into compliance with its 2005 consent order and service contract with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD). The $20 million project is intended to reduce Allen Park?s wet weather discharges to DWSD, reduce bypass pumping to the Ecorse Creek and limit the future risk of basement flooding by providing storage during wet weather events and eliminating hydraulic bottlenecks in the sanitary sewer system.

In response to the FY2008 Consolidated Appropriations Act (H.R. 2764; Public Law 110?161), the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) issued the final Mandatory Reporting of Greenhouse Gases Rule (MRR). The rule, signed by the USEPA Administrator, Lisa Jackson, on September 22, 2009, requires reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from large sources and suppliers in the United States, and is intended to collect accurate and timely emissions data to inform future policy decisions. The MRR will go into effect on January 1, 2010, and a report of the total emissions for calendar year 2010 will be due to the USEPA by March 31, 2011. Under the final MRR, suppliers of fossil fuels or industrial greenhouse gases, manufacturers of vehicles and engines, and certain facilities that emit 25,000 metric tons or more per year of GHG emissions are required to submit annual reports to the USEPA. The gases covered by the rule are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), perfluorocarbons (PFC), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), and other fluorinated gases as outlined in Table A-1 of Subpart A of the MRR, which is also provided in Appendix A of this report.

Lost foam casting patterns are foamed polystyrene shapes glued together into the shape of the part to be cast and are coated with a refractory material consisting of a mineral mixture and binders. Prior to casting, a significant number of the patterns are damaged and inevitably land-filled. In this study, a process is developed for the recovery of foamed polystyrene from the coating and glue contaminants. The process consists of shredding, impact comminution, size classification and density separation. It is successful in separating up to 97% of the contaminants, while recovering 95% of the polystyrene.

A heavy-mineral deposit about 1.6 kilometers (I mile) in length and averaging about three meters (10 feet) in thickness is exposed approximately130 kilometers (80 miles) east of Denver, along Interstate 70, in Elbert County, Colorado near the town of Limon. The deposit is exposed in a geomorphic feature known locally as Titanium Ridge. The dominant heavy minerals, accounting for about 70% of the total heavy mineral suite by weight, are ilmenite, garnet, and zircon. The mineralized zone appears in a series of visually interpretable facies that are stacked vertically and represent subtidal, forebeach, backbeach, washover fan, and aeolian depositional environments. These paleoenvironments are analogous to depositional environments represented by a modern heavy-mineral bearing facies tract on St. Catherines Island, Georgia. Thus, Titanium Ridge provides evidence that heavy-mineral accumulation models for late Cenozoic deposits in the Georgia and Florida coastal plains are applicable to heavy-mineral deposits of the Western Interior subsurface and, by implication, the Western Interior Seaway, extending from Mexico to the Canadian Arctic.

From Sept. 22-24, the Las Vegas Convention Center will be home to MinExpo 2008, the world?s largest mining equipment show that comes along once every four years. Sponsored by the National Mining Association (NMA), this year?s show is on pace to be the largest ever. Nearly 1,300 exhibitors have purchased nearly 55,700 hm2 (600,000 sq ft) of booth space. At the center of it all will be some of the most impressive mining equipment that the industry has to offer. And in the shadows of the massive haul trucks, drill rigs and bulldozers, attendees will be able to see the latest and greatest products including hand tools; the latest in automation and robotics; safety and communications equipment; longwall mining equipment; engines and parts; materials handling and processing equipment and services; pollution control equipment; reclamation equipment and services; computer applications; consulting and financial services and more. While many companies will be on hand to display the tried and true, there will also be plenty of new things to see. ?We anticipate that a whole range of new products will be introduced at the show,? the NMA said of the show that has been called the world?s richest deposit of mining technology, services and products. In addition to the show that will take place in Center Hall and North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, MinExpo 2008 includes a conference program with 20 educational sessions that will tackle the most timely and pressing issues affecting the mining industry. Many of the industry?s top professionals will lead the discussions.

The Subtropolis mine is a room-and-pillar mine extracting the Vanport Limestone near Petersburg, Ohio. In February 2018, mine management began implementing a heading reorientation to better control the negative effects of excessive levels of horizontal stress. The conditions in the headings improved, but as expected, stressrelated damage concentrated within crosscuts. The mine operator has worked to lessen the impact of the instabilities in the outby crosscuts by implementing several engineering controls. With the implementation of each control, conditions were monitored and analyzed using observational and measurement techniques including three-dimensional (3-D) LiDAR surveys.

San Martin Mine is an open pit, gold heap leach operation located approximately 70 kilometers from the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa. Mining operations commenced in 2000 and were completed late in 2007, while heap leaching operations continue. Reclamation was executed concurrently with operations to the extent practical. The area has distinct rainy and dry seasons and closure objectives include: prevention and mitigation of acid rock drainage, sediment and erosion control, and mitigation of visual impacts. Final closure is well underway at San Martin and this paper describes the closure processes conducted to date, problems encountered, and the subsequent lessons learned.

Gold ores containing antimony suffer from poor recoveries of gold in cyanidation due to the impact of antimony on the cyanidation process. Techniques such as lowering the pH for cyanidation can improve gold recovery, nevertheless a limit can be reached where high cyanide consumption makes traditional processing uneconomic. The paper outlines a process for the pre-treatment of gold-antimony concentrates to remove the antimony resulting in a low-antimony content gold-bearing residue suitable for efficient treatment for gold recovery through cyanidation. This hydrometallurgical process produces a by-product credit of commercial grade antimony trioxide as Senarmontite that can significantly offset the cost of the pre-treatment.

The two candidates in the upcoming presidential election in the United States each say that they have their own solution to the nation?s energy problems - solutions that will increase the amount of energy available, lessen the nation?s dependence on foreign sources and reduce the amount of pollution released to the atmosphere. Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama and Republican candidate Sen. John McCain both advocate research funding for coal-to-liquids and clean coal technologies. McCain also supports increased oil and gas drilling offshore. And Obama has even made some noises in that direction, although his plan leans heavily on the increased use of renewable energy sources. The energy debate is not new to this election. Congress and whichever party is in the White House has for years been trying to craft a comprehensive energy policy. One difference in this latest debate is that the increased use of nuclear energy has gained more attention. Current President George W. Bush has said he favors the increased use of nuclear power as part of the nation?s energy package. And McCain said he supports the building of more nuclear power plants. Obama has not said much about that. The American public is also showing signs of changing its stance on nuclear energy. To be sure, images of Three Mile Island and Chernobyl are still alive in some minds. However, the American public has said it wants cheaper energy and they want it produced more cleanly. With nuclear, the nation can have both. In the United States, nuclear accounts for slightly less than 20 percent of the electrical power used (see interview with Gary Steele of Energy Fuels on page 27). Globally, that figure is about 15 percent. And there are several nations that derive better than half of their power from nuclear sources. Add to that the world?s increasing need for more energy and the future of nuclear is bright.
