A unique type of grinding mill liner has been developed by Waagner-Biro A.G. of Austria. This liner system, termed an angular spiral lining (.ESL), was, successfully tested by Magma Copper Company's San Manuel concentrator in both their 10 Ft x 10 Ft (3.05m x 3.05m) and 12 Ft, 6 In x 14 Ft (3.81m x 4.27m) grate discharge wet grinding ball mills. Magma Copper's savings in power and grinding balls justified conversion of more than half of their twenty-six ball mills to the ESL system.1,2 The ASL system was provided by the Capitol Castings Division of Midland Ross Corporation, the exclusive licensee for such conversions. Capitol Castings proposed the following as expected benefits from installation of an ASL system in an 18 Ft x 21 Ft (5.49m x 6.40m) overflow discharge wet grinding ball mill at the Pinto Valley Operation of Cities Service Company: "(a) Reduction of power consumption per ton of ore milled = 12%, (b) Increased throughput = 6%, (c) Reduction of ball consumption = 6%."

Problems associated with fines (minus 6 mm, 1/4-inch) production, preparation, and utilization have long plagued the coal industry and are now more acute than ever. Continuous deep mining systems create more fines which have moisture; content greater than natural levels from dust control spraying and often add substantial levels of mineral matter due to mining selectivity constraints. Frequently, during preparation, more -fines are developed to achieve improved component liberation. Coal consumers often specify small sizes whether for carbonization, combustion, or conversion. Wet beneficiation systems process fines by several' types of unit operations, but usually must also incorporate costly and complex dewatering systems to reduce the moisture content of the products. Existing pneumatic preparation systems are constrained between product equality and yield by the sharpness of separation. These limitations become more severe with decreasing particle size and increasing feed moisture content. Control of particulate emissions, both process and fugitive, during pneumatic preparation, can be forbidding. A pneumatic preparation-process which would overcome these constraints, could be most enticing. The DryFlo system is being evaluated to quantify performance characteristics as regards these constraints.

Risk assessment is an essential component of mine feasibility studies. However, it is often challenging to identify the appropriate analysis and derive the required input data. The uniqueness of a mining project and the associated technical issues require customization of the risk assessment approach to meet both requirements and characteristics. The uncertainty driving the operating risk in mine feasibility studies and its assessment through Monte Carlo simulation as a component of a cash flow analysis are discussed in this paper. The paper introduces the use of the analytic hierarchy process for derivation of qualitative input and conducts quantification of the three main sources of operating performance delays, equipment, ground and schedule problems, in a cash flow simulation. A methodology for the assessment of operating risk in mine feasibility studies is presented.

The strongest magnetic roll separator available on the market enhances certain industrial minerals purity to levels not reached previously. Exceptionally strong forces can also be utilized for processing relatively fine particles at feed rates several times greater than for prior art electromagnetic induced roll separators. Since the unique machine does not work with an air-gap, coarser particles than what has been considered practical can be separated at rates up to 20 tph per single machine unit and 40 tph for a double machine unit. Examples for all these three application areas will be given. While the roll separator can be used only for dry processing presently, the other new separator can be used for both wet and dry applications. It is a medium-intensity, high- gradient magnetic separator employing a filamentary matrix. It was primarily developed for recovery of weakly magnetic iron ore fines, but it is finding applications for cleaning of industrial minerals such as wollastonite, calcite, clay and talc. Its main advantage is a simple design resulting in a very lm cost machine both with regards to total capital investment and operation. A significant technical advantage exists also. The metallurgical performance is similar to conventional electromagnetic separators, while the cost per ton is about half of such separators.

Communication was the buzzword for health and safety products at the 2008 MINExpo, and it is still important in 2012. Products unveiled following the Miner Act in 2006 have been upgraded and improved. Saving lives and reducing injuries through better leadership, planning and practice is the goal of every mine professional.

Numerous seismic techniques have proven to be important and cost effective aids to both coal exploration and nine planning. Projects conducted by Sandia in recent years have sham seismic refraction is a valuable tool for determining overburden properties while high resolution, 2-0 and 3-D seismic reflection surveys are the primary means of napping coal seam distribution, structure, and continuity. Further, seismic methods utilizing existing boreholes (e.g. downhole, crosshole and guided wave) provide detailed measures of overburden/interburden modulus variation, seam continuity, and calibration for other seismic surveys. Examples include mapping faults of 2-10 m threw in seams 3-15 m thick at depths of 80-300m.

The concept of "heat recuperation" for the grate-kiln pelletizing system was first implemented at the Sydvaranger plant in Norway in 1974. Essentially, heat recuperation involves bringing hot air from the second stage of the pellet cooler to the drying zone to increase drying-air temperature to the maximum limit. 'Burner-fuel savings result from a lower kiln secondary-air mass flow at a higher temperature. Because of the fuel benefits achieved at Sydvaranger, heat recuperation has been included innumerous new grate-kiln plants built since then, and some older plants have been retrofitted for heat recuperation. In recent years there has been much confusion about the fuel benefits of heat recuperation. To answer some of the questions, a mathematical model was developed and plant tests were conducted at Minntac Phase 111. Minntac is a magnetite taconite concentrating and pelletizing plant, and Phase III has two indurating lines. This paper presents the results of the studies and plant tests.

Coal mine ventilation systems are often subject to high leakage rates. As a result, changes in airflow resistance will strongly affect the efficiency with which air is delivered to the working place. One major source of airflow resistance is the line brattice used to direct air from the last open crosscut to the working face. Because it is a great distance from the fan, the resistance of the line brattice can result in more overall leakage than an equivalent resistance closer to the fan. Substituting auxiliary fans for brattice eliminates this source of resistance, with improvements in system efficiency and cost. Also, in some mines, the leakage that leads to spontaneous combustion can be reduced. The benefits obtained by several different brattice and fan substitutions have been studied by Mine Ventilation Services, Inc., under contract to the Bureau of Mines. Changes in main fan duty were compared with additional costs associated with auxiliary fans. Results indicate that in some circumstances, considerable leakage reductions and cost savings are possible.

The systems optimization approach to mine planning has led to the adoption of a number of mathematical and computer models for short, medium and long range planning of mining operations. In the realm of open pit mine planning, the most common uses of such an approach have been in the areas of optimal pit design and planning of materials handling operations. Since a truck-shovel combination is the most widely used method of materials handling in open pit mines, a number of models have been presented in the past to analyze and optimize such systems. Broadly, these models can be divided into two categories. The simulation model, which is primarily used as an aid in analyzing the performance of either an operating or a proposed haulage system under the influence of externally alterable parameters, and the linear or integer model which is used as a tool for short or medium term optimization of the system under the operating constraints. In the first part of this paper, a brief discussion is presented of the linear/integer optimization models presented in the past, and in the second part a new model is described which is actually a combination of the simulation and the integer programming models. In its bare essentials, the model consists of an integer optimization algorithm, but the constraints are regularly and dynamically updated by incorporating the conclusions drawn from a stochastic simulation model of the mine haulage system. Since the successive optimization is performed by the mine operator who manipulates the constraints to guide the model towards the optimum, the mystical black box approach is minimized and should help in adoption of the model by the mine personnel. Also, by combining the stochastic simulation model and the deterministic integer model, some of the advantages of each are acquired.

Paste tailings disposal was successfully implemented at the New Jersey mill in Kellogg, ID with two different types of ore feed, a gold ore and a silver ore. The purpose of this paper is to describe the production of paste tailings, including operational problems during commissioning, and also highlight the environmental and economic benefits that were realized versus conventional tailings disposal such as the recycling of process water, increased shear strength and reduced permeability of the tailings mass, and reduced environmental permitting.

The high-rate floc blanket clarification process developed by the Anglo American Corporation of South Africa is capable of continuously clarifying gold and uranium pregnant solutions containing 200-2500 mg/L suspended solids to below 25 mg/L solids at an average rising velocity of 8 m/h at the low process cost of R0,001-0,002 per ton of liquid treated. Overall process cost savings are mainly due to increased polishing filtration cycle times.

During 1996, US mines produced 319 t (10.26 million or) of gold metal valued at $4 billion. At yearend, mine reserves were estimated to be 4.7 kt (151 million oz) of gold metal. Almost all of the production was from western states. Nevada accounted for about 68% of national production. Information for this article was obtained through annual reports of mining companies, US Geological Survey (USGS) databases and other public sources. Table 1 shows production and reserves by mine. It divides the mines into two categories. These are producing mines whose primary product is gold, and producing mines for which gold is a byproduct or coproduct. The mines listed in Table 1 accounted for more than 98% of US gold production during 1996. Except the Daisy Mine, the table does not include mines that produced less than 31 kg/a (1,000 oz/year). You have been involved with research activities in froth flotation and size reduction. What do you think the future holds for these technologies? Froth flotation and size reduction are essential processing steps common to almost all current mineral-processing operations. The most significant recent advances in both of these technologies have been in the increased size of equipment and in some alternative machine designs, such as the column cells and the high-pressure roller mills. I believe that the next major area of improvement in size reduction will be at least partially driven by an improved awareness of controlling the conditions that influence the efficiency of particle breakage. This would include factors such as water-chemistry influences, the influence of fines from classification, chemical grinding additives and better rheology control. In froth flotation, significant changes are currently taking place in the plant use of frothers. Also, there will be an increasing number of new collector chemistries for certain types of flotation, such as with oxide minerals, oxidized mineral recovery in sulfide systems and improved selectivity with certain sulfide mineral systems. You have been active in implementing new engineering technology in industry. What do you think will be the technological future of mineral processing? Being involved in the invention and industrial implementation of new technology has been one of the most positive experiences of my career. I also have had the unique experience of working in the chemical and petroleum industries as well as in mineral processing. In my opinion, the future of mineral processing will be an exciting, wonderful work area in which to be involved. The development of new technology in minerals processing offers a special challenge compared, for example, to that of chemistry or chemical engineering. In successful industrial innovation involving minerals, having a sound theory is not enough. Instead, what is required is a valid blend of a good idea, meaningful laboratory characterization and, most key, the experience necessary to adjust the plant in such a way to incorporate the idea. The complexity of engineering systems that contain solids, liquids and gases, as well as highly variable natural mineral properties, means that nothing new comes easily. In some cases, it has been difficult to explain how processes practiced in industry for decades actually work, in terms of physical and chemical fundamentals. On the other hand, when a new idea is successfully implemented, the economic and professional returns can be very rewarding. I know of no more challenging field of engineering than minerals processing. What is your view of the future of the minerals industry in general? The need for minerals, metals and coal will be with us for decades to come. In many aspects, the minerals industry became global much earlier than some of the other industrial sectors that are currently experiencing globalization. I believe that fair international competition is beneficial to the users of minerals, metals and coals and to those involved in producing such materials. The key word here for a global economy to work is "fair." So the various playing fields involved such as finance, profit return, regulation and labor should be relatively level for all the players involved. Competition is an amazing driving force for innovation. This has been true in the minerals industry during the last few decades. The mining industry is producing more at less cost per unit than ever before in our history. I anticipate that this trend will continue as long as the global political situation remains relatively stable.

Underground construction environments, especially those with limited airflow such as shafts, cross passages, and stations, necessitate effective dust control. This requires combining existing measures with adapted approaches for more efficient and productive operations, cleaner jobsites, and decreased worker exposure to contaminated air. This paper will discuss new configurations and trends in dust collection on Australasian infrastructure projects including WestConnex, Melbourne Metro Tunnel and City Rail Link, all of which have applied innovative methodologies for mobile at-source dust collection. Mobile dust collectors can be track-mounted dust collectors operate alongside equipment, use hydraulic stepping systems to advance with roadheaders, or compact castor-mounted units are used within cross passage confines.

MINExpo International is billed as the largest exposition for the mining and mineral processing industry. And the 2012 edition, scheduled for Sept. 24-26 in Las Vegas, NV, is no exception. Put on by the National Mining Association (NMA), attendance at this year?s show is expected to be significantly more than the 38,500 who attended the last MINExpo in 2008. The exhibit will also be quite a bit larger in 2012 than it was at the previous MINExpo. More than 1,800 companies, representing more than 30 countries, will fill the Las Vegas Convention Center. The more than 850,000 sq ft of exhibit space will include the North and Central halls as well as South Halls Nos. 3 and 4. And the Silver Lot outside of the front door, under construction in 2008, will be filled with more exhibitors. The 2008 show attracted about 1,220 exhibitors occupying more than 600,000 sq ft of exhibit space.

The control of quartz levels in the respirable dust requires an approach different from that used to control respirable coal dust. The unique physical properties of quartz have to be utilized when developing quartz dust control systems. Also, techniques that modify the surface properties of quartz dust so that conventional dust control measures are effective should be explored. For instance, the wetting characteristics of quartz can be modified so that the capture efficiency of the quartz dust can be improved. Foam sprays assist in modifying surface wetting characteristics. This paper summarizes the results of a study that was conducted in an operating mine to evaluate the effectiveness of a compressed air foam spray system installed under the boom of a continuous miner and directed so as to cover the pan and the gathering arm. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the effect of the foam underboom sprays on (1) the respirable dust concentration in the ambient air, (2) the quartz concentration in the respirable dust. The engineering design of the foam generation and delivery system is described in the paper, followed by a description of the mine and the dust sampling strategy. The data were analyzed to study the effect of foam on respirable dust and quartz concentrations at the miner cab, face return and the intake. The results of the data analyses and costs are presented in the paper.

Historically most mine management teams have been forced to operate in a more or less subjective manner. The objectives of mine management are simple and clear. Like other operational managements, mine management teams have the traditional well defined goals of improving efficiency and production while decreasing costs. Unlike other operational managements however, mining teams deal regularly with a vast assortment of uncertainties caused by: - Key production tools being mobile and widely dispersed, and - Non-uniform mining conditions At best in most operations these conditions cause obstacles to productivity and at the same time cause long delay in managment awareness of the obstacles. Planning with delayed feedback of information about necessary deviations is incomplete planning. For these reasons increased operational efficiency remains a constant though somewhat elusive goal.

A 1/20 scale experimental dozer push test rig was designed and constructed to quantify the expected production rates (loose cubic meters per hour) for dozers operating in hard-rock bulk push applications. The particle size distribution of the material employed in the test rig was modeled on a fragmented muckpile representative of that for a typical surface copper/gold mine overburden. Buckingham Pi theory was applied to mathematically develop factors for scaling up dozer productivity parameters, including blade loads and push times. Dozer production rates were investigated for various dozing distances and slope angles. A series of instantaneous productivity curves were produced which are applicable for use in hard-rock dozer push operations. The productivity curves produced demonstrate that dozer productivity declines rapidly over the range of 10 to 40 m.

The disposition of world mineral resources is such that a vital need exists for both the most efficient development of existing resources and the rapid disclosure of as-yet undiscovered resources. The technological developments described in this report are directed primarily toward the acceleration and increased efficiency of mineral-resource exploration program. In the past decade the use of computers in the mineral industry has grown exponentially. Most computer applications in mineral exploration are designed to be implemented either before or after data collection. Few, if any, computer applications are designed to be used during the collection of data. One major reason for the lack of development of computer applications in this area is that comunications links do not exist between computing systems and the remote areas that host mineral-deposit exploration programs.

What unusual features are there about finding, winning, and using the industrial minerals of Canada which may be of interest and yet not widely known. Have you, for example, ever wondered where the raw material for those distinctive greenish grey statuettes, so readily recognizable as Eskimo carvings, comes from? Although stone suitable for carving is obtained at several northern locations, in recent years the Federal government, the Quebec government, and one or two private companies have shipped supplies of various rock types from other sources to central distribution points in the Canadian north for the express purpose of providing Eskimo artists with raw materials for carving. Canada is well endowed with industrial minerals, the extent and variety of which may be observed by a perusal of Table 1.
