This paper presents comparison of proposed future solution and in-situ mining methods for in-situ leaching and recovery of uranium, gold, silver, and copper. We propose to show that in the future new extraction methods for each metal will eventually evolve for each hydrometallurgical process step, i.e. in-situ leaching, recovery, and concentration; precipitation and reduction; and drying, when required--without generating waste or bleed streams. In the future, to be highly profitable, these forms of mining will develop into an integrated system to eliminate waste streams using safe, powerful lixiviants. This integration will include, with some exceptions, improvements in the following areas of process development: 1. Lixiviant selection and in-situ leaching technique, 2. Target metal recovery and concentration (at a surface hydrometallurgical facility) from the circulating pregnant lixiviant stream, 3. Target metal precipitation or reduction, where decant water from the precipitate dewatering step is reusable for resin or solvent strip liquor (eluant), 4. Final preparation of target metal for sales, i.e. drying, purification, casting, packaging, 5. Restoration where most of the groundwater restoration process is performed at the same rate as multi-wellfield mining.

A geologic investigation of mineral resources in South Carolina first began in 1825 when the General Assembly authorized Lardner Vanuxen to conduct a "Geological and Mineralogical Survey of South Carolina." Vanuxen, South Carolina's first State Geologist, reported in 1826 on the limestones (marble) of the Piedmont which during those early years, were burned in many shall, scattered kilns in the region wherever suitable raw material was available. He also mentioned the possibility of using marl from the Atlantic Coastal Plain province for direct application and enrichment to the soil. Since before the year 1844 industrial minerals in South Carolina have been commercially produced literally from A to Z, asbestos to zircon. The first pub¬lished reports of actual commercial production, not just an occurrence, are referenced in Table 1 for 33 known industrial minerals and rocks in South Carolina. Known or suspected occurrences of undeveloped non-metallic mineral resources in South Carolina await future verification by geologic mapping, sampling (including coring), possible beneficiation, and market analysis. These industrial minerals and rocks include, but are not limited to, special, clay minerals (e.g. bentonitic clays, zeolites and others), sillimanite, argillite (lightweight aggregate), kaolin (alumina) and marl (underground storage and tunneling medium). In addition other non-metallic minerals, once mined but still worthy of reconsideration, include topaz (industrial), heavy minerals, barite, feldspar, and monazite. Finally, possibilities for new reserves, as an expansion of existing mine output, might develop for fuller's earth, limestone (lime), sericite (finely divided mica), vermiculite, kaolin (paper coating and filling, other filler), and metallurgical gravel. Official South Carolina data from the U. S. Bureau of Mines for 1974 indicated a total value of mineral production of $105.2 million. The ability to detect and quantify ground movements in underground mine workings is of the utmost importance to the safety of miners and continuity of operations. Rib sloughage is one of the most common forms of underground deformation. Remote sensing techniques, such as laser scanning, can be used to quantify this rib sloughage, by recording precise, timelapse point clouds of mine workings. In order to determine sloughage volumes and locations, two sets of laser scans were performed 42 days apart at a working section of an underground limestone mine. During this period, significant sloughing and scaling occurred, allowing for differentiation between the initial and final point clouds. Volumetric changes of 2.3-2.6 m3 were detected on rib faces during the time-lapse study. In addition, displacement in the mine roof was, as expected, not detected, suggesting well surveyed scans and an appropriate scan resolution.

Colony Development Operation is a joint venture currently consisting of four active members; The Oil Shale Corporation (TOSCO); Ashland Oil Inc.; Shell Oil Company and Atlantic Richfield Company, operator of the project. The initial efforts on the Colony project began in the spring of 1965. Pilot mining and semi-works engineering programs continued, in phases, to completion in the fall of 1972 when commercialization of oil shale was deemed realistic. Since that time, Colony efforts have been directed toward evaluation of the data collected during the semi-works operation and in designing a commercial operation. In October of 1974, Colony announced: "because of economic and national energy policy uncertainties it was suspending plans to start construction of a commercial oil shale plant on private lands in northwestern Colorado, scheduled for spring of 1975."

Washington State has a variety of industrial minerals and although not many are produced currently (1982) most have a history of production (table 1). The value of industrial minerals produced in the state exceeds by several times the production value of metallic minerals. In 1981, 15 minerals - cement, limestone, clay, gemstone, pumice, sand and gravel, stone, diatomite, gypsum, olivine, peat, talc, garnet, silica, and dolomite - were produced. Combined value of nonmetallic production for 1981 is estimated at $218,999,000. Cement had the largest estimated value at $102 million, followed by sand and gravel at $47 million, and crushed stone at $29 million. These figures are from the US. Inco acquired majority interest in the nickel laterite concessions in eastern Guatemala in 1960 and, through its subsidiary Exmibal, extensively explored the deposits until 1965 to define the site for project development on the north shore of Lake Izabal. This paper outlines the exploration methods used to evaluate the Guatemalan laterite deposits.

The El Soldado copper mineralization occurs as relatively high-grade irregular ore bodies with assay contacts and with frequent inclusions of barren rock. The sampling method must be timely for production grade control purposes, as well as accurate and inexpensive. Sampling techniques evolved from sampling dump cars at the haulage level to sampling scooptrams at the loading pockets. These were abandoned in favor of sampling production blast holes. Several sampling alternatives are discussed. These involve the selection of optimum volumes and sampling frequencies while taking into consideration geological parameters and statistical analyses of sampling data.

The redox reactions that occur on pyrrhotite and pentlandite in contact with oxygenated deionized water were examined using voltammetry. Reactions were put forward in which both minerals were progressively hydroxylated to form thermodynamically metastable surface intermediate products. These intermediates were modelled as metal deficient sulphides where a sulphurous layer was coordinated onto the remaining metal sites via polysulphides. Prior to hydroxylation pentlandite exhibited changes in the surface stoichiometry which were not related to pH effects. The formation of polysuiphide-sulphur intermediates were believed to promote collectorless; flotability for the two minerals. Microflotation tests (0.3 g samples) verified that the surface potential and particle size affected the flotation response, excessive oxidation inhibiting the minerals' flotability. Larger scale tests using ore samples (30 g) confirmed that the extent of pulp oxidation, particle size distribution and the presence of frothers affected the flotation response, the findings being in accordance with the postulated model for the hydrophobic species generated on the pentlandite and pyrrhotite surfaces.

European Union's transition to a low-carbon and digital economy highly depends on securing the strategic autonomy of the Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) supply chain. This paper introduces a European Commission-funded research and innovation action, AGEMERA, which aims to create detailed geological and people's concerns maps to unlock the CRMs potential in Europe. Furthermore, the project will develop educational packages for schools and universities, publish online CRM-related games and news flashes, and arrange public events to ensure a basis for socially accepted and sustainable exploration and mining of CRMs in Europe. 1. IntroductionCritical Raw Materials (CRMs), crucial for shifting to a low-carbon and digital economy, should focus on maintaining Europe's overall supply-demand balance (Birol, 2022). Therefore, to proactively address the surge in demand and ensure the strategic autonomy of European industrial supply chains, the exploration and extraction of CRMs must be scaled out across the continent. Moreover, mobilizing Europe's domestic potential is vital for the EU to become more resilient and to establish open strategic autonomy as the demand for CRMs continues to increase quickly on a global scale (European Commission, 2021). Base metal extraction and mining have a long history in Europe. Nevertheless, CRMs mining projects have shown less success, although these have a lot of potential (Guzik et al., 2021). The main barriers are a lack of investment in mining and exploration, complicated and drawn-out national permitting processes, and low levels of public support (European Commission, 2020). It is necessary to have a vast amount of knowledge and intelligence about CRM's potential and market impact. Novel non-invasive geophysical survey techniques that enable sustainable exploration must be created and used to enhance mineral system models of ore deposits incorporating CRMs. The minerals policy framework significantly influences the mining industry's performance, stability, and sustainability. However, the EU Member States' mineral policy frameworks differ significantly (MINLEX, 2017). In addition, the Fraser Institute Annual Survey of Mining Companies offers concrete information on how managers and executives of mining companies view key policy areas that impact mining activities in the jurisdiction in which they operate or are familiar (Jackson & Green, 2015).

Calcium carbonate is one of the most widely used industrial minerals in applications like cement, lime, agriculture, power plant fluegas desulfurization (FGD) and construction aggregates. Most applications are generally high-volume and low value ($9/t or $10/st) or less free-on-board (f.o.b.) mine site) uses of this material. Specialty uses of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) are typically referred to as ?performance mineral? or ?extender and ?ller? applications. Primary specialty markets for GCC include paper and plastics as well as a number of construction applications including joint compounds, carpet backing, paint, and adhesives, caulks and sealants (ACS). Other important specialty applications for GCC include rubber, food and personal care products. A new and growing application for GCC is in nonwoven fabrics, where this mineral replaces a small percentage of the polymer. Typical specialty applications for GCC are color sensitive and require extremely white/bright materials. Although deposits of limestone are located in most states, high brightness resources are relatively rare and controlled by a limited group of suppliers.

Microcystaline silica has been mined in Illinois from the Clear Creek formation since the turn of the century, especially in the area around Tamms in Alexander County, in the southernmost part of the state. Production of this silica, consumed mainly by the abrasives and coatings industries but also sought after for many filler/extender uses, has grown with the economy with several new applications overshadowing traditional markets in recent years. Such an important commodity was given the early attention of the Illinois State Geological Survey and a very complete report was issued in 1953 (Report of Investigations No. 166), authored by J. E. Lamar. The mining and processing of the silica ore has changed very little since the first reported production in 1906, although emphasis has been placed on the production of the finer sized grades to meet newer market requirements. Industrial Mineral Notes 40, published by the Illinois State Geological Survey in June 1970, describes a method by which a less than 1-micron fraction could be commercially produced from the readily available finest commercial grade presently being marketed (99% minus 10 microns). The finer grades exhibit to a lesser degree the reinforcement, high flatting efficiency, thickening and dry brightness properties associated with the synthetically produced silicas. It is expected that the extremely fine grades of microcrystaline silica will become accepted in the markets that now use a combination of precipitated silica and less expensive extender/filler minerals such as kaolin or calcium carbonate.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multi-element ground support system there is a need to know when the material has developed a threshold early compressive strength of approximately 1 MPa (145 psi) for safe re-entry of miner and machine into shotcreted mine workings. This equates to the material having developed enough strength to be self-supporting and allow for emplacement of the remaining support elements that require drilling of the shotcrete layer without degradation. NIOSH researchers have developed methods and portable test equipment to measure shotcrete strength on-site in the first six hours after application using the ASTM C 116-90 (1990) standard. These advances were demonstrated in tests on five commercially available shotcrete mixes, sprayed as dry shotcrete using the field expedient methods and equipment. The strength values from these tests allowed for real-time identification of the early strength threshold and were consistent with strengths reported using laboratory-type equipment. The findings of this NIOSH research for determining shotcrete early strength can improve mine safety by providing a method for determining initial site specific material property values to be used for design and as a means to conduct on-site quality control and monitoring during production.

Wet scrubbing of fine coal from Thermal dryers poses a number of problems in adapting the gas cleaning equipment for required clean-up of the fine particulate matter. Among then are: 1. The dust In the gases leaving the Thermal dryer cyclone-s is often extremely fine with high percentages of the total dust loading less than one (1) micron in size. 2, The flue gas entering the scrubber is corrosive since the coal fired in the thermal dryer furnace is in the range of 0.7% by weight sulphur or higher. Therefore comparatively high cost stainless steel alloys or corrosion resistant linings are required for a satisfactory service life. 3. Requirements for residual coal loadings leaving the gas e scrubber are continually being lowered while modern coal preparation operation is imposing heavier burdens on the collection system through introduction into the Thermal dryer system of very fine coal previously not recovered. The advent of flotation systems in increasing numbers is typical of this trend 4. The installation of a scrubbing system on Thermal dryers is made primarily to reduce air pollution and product recovery value is of little or no value. Therefore the operating costs, that is, of gas pressure drop and water requirements must be held to a minimum.

Standing supports have been used in coal mines for decades to enhance roof support capability. Sometimes standing supports are used as a tool to resist the lateral movement of spalled ribs. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are conducting a testing program for different types of standing supports (steel and timber) to investigate the effect of lateral loading on their vertical loading capacities and the factors affecting their lateral loading capacities. In this paper, the mine roof simulator (MRS), at the NIOSH Pittsburgh research facility, was used to determine the response of steel props to vertical and horizontal loadings. Finite element models (FEMs) were developed and verified using the tested steel props. To justify the testing program for testing standing supports with end-conditions of rock-like materials, the verified prop models were used to study the effect of a wide range of roof and floor materials (gray shale, shale, and claystone) on the critical buckling loads of the steel props. Also, several lateral loading scenarios were evaluated in which the steel props were laterally loaded at different heights. The critical buckling load for steel props setting up against a claystone roof and floor was found to be one-half of that shown by the MRS test where roof and floor platens are made of steel. Minimum prop performance was observed when the lateral load was applied at the mid-height of the steel prop, especially at small lateral displacement (less than 2 in).

The Cities Service Company's Pinto Valley mine and concentrator lie about 6 miles west of the town of Miami, Arizona at an elevation of approximately 4,000 feet above sea level. The concentrator started its first ballmill in July 74 and all six were available by November. Every effort was made to reduce capital costs, consequently, each unit process was studied critically to eliminate excess capital costs without loss of efficiency. Equipment selection was made on the basis of proven dependability and operating costs rather than on low bids. The result is a very workable plant with some important innovations. The concentrator is nominally 40,000 tons per day. The flowsheet is typical with 3 stage crushing, single stage closed circuit grinding, flotation, regrinding of rougher concentrate and cleaning of the rougher concentrate. The Copper Canyon Cu-Au-Ag deposits include two geologically distinct hypogene ore bodies developed primarily in late Paleozoic rocks adjacent to a 38-m.y.-old potassic-altered granodiorite, whose emplacement seems to have been controlled largely by the Virgin fault, a north-striking normal fault. Widespread but subeconomic concentrations of sulfides as fracture and cavity fillings in skarn apparently preceded the final intrusion of the granodiorite. In the west ore body, metals reached ore-grade concentrations through the massive replacement of andradite by chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and pyrite mineral assemblages. The east ore body probably formed after the granodiorite reached its present level. Calculated 6dD values of water in equilibrium with primary and secondary biotites range from -76 to -99 per mil at temperatures indicated by d180 values from coexisting quartz and biotite. The lightest values are in secondary biotite from the east ore body. These data suggest that fluids associated with potassic alteration here were most likely composed of magmatic water mixed with some meteoric water.

An economic and operational evaluation of the unrecovered metal, physical conditions, and chemical environment in a leach pad should be made prior to decommissioning. This evaluation will help determine the possibility and method of secondary and/or enhanced metal recovery and the method(s) to be used for detoxification and heap closure. The evaluation requires quantitative sample collection in a locally variable, yet grossly homogenous material. An assessment of a valley fill heap leach pad was made using a technique borrowed from placer technology called sonic drilling. The sonic drilling technique produced very satisfactory core recovery and sample quality. At this site, drilling results demonstrated that the method of heap construction produced expected features after extensive long term leaching. Rather than a uniformly homogenous pile of metallurgically depleted crushed ore, an assemblage of solution channels, un-oxidized sections, unleached areas, and compaction due to various factors, were found. These conditions are thought to represent a normal, rather than unique, situation for a valley fill heap leach. The lack of this information can have a significant impact on the economics and methods of heap re-handling and ultimate closure.

Minerals beneficiation commonly requires initial crushing and grinding so that the mineral phase we seek to concentrate is adequately liberated to obtain a product of specified grade at optimum recovery. To some degree this also is true for coal preparation. In the comminution process we liberate not only the product but also the tailings phase. The true objective is, therefor, to eliminate from the comminution circuit whatever particulate matter has reached specified liberation, regardless of whether the particle is product or tailings material. Overgrinding either of the two phases ties up mill capacity and usually also burdens the downstream processing steps by increasing costs or decreasing recovery, or both. In view of this situation, one would expect concentration steps to be commonly incorporated into the cominution circuit. The reasons this is not done may vary, but probably include the desire to utilize large scale unit operations, e.g., large mills, in conjunction with very simple processes. Hydrocyclones have satisfied this desire but may not always be employed for the right reasons. Hydrocyclones are indeed simple. They also are rugged and forgiving. Unfortunately, these virtues are frequently misused. The direct results are inefficient classification and overgrinding. The indirect results are added costs through recovery losses, unnecessary recirculation, and so on,

The Grangcold Pellet Process - for which patents have been applied or already granted in a number of countries - uses a hydraulic adhesive such as Portland cement, slag cements, pozzolanic cements, etc., for the production of cold bonded pellets. The idea of using a hydraulic binder for the agglomeration of iron ore fines is not new. Portland cement was proposed as an adhesive for cold bonded iron ore briquettes in patents granted more than 50 years ago (1). In a report on the briquetting of iron ore fines, published in Stahl and Eisen 1959 (2), it is stated that briquettes bonded with Portland cement are used on a small scale at on ironwork in Germany. According to the report, the briquettes showed excellent strength in the blast furnace although their general use was made impossible because they required a long hardening time, during which they are sticky, soft and difficult to store and handle. The Grangcold Pellet "recess has overcome this particular disadvantage by mixing the balls with a suitable amount of the balling concentrate before storing them. The pellets are embedded in the concentrate during storing in such a way that they are isolated from each other and thus prevented from sticking together to form clusters. Thanks to the embedding concentrate, the pellets are subjected to a more or less uniform pressure from all sides which does not deform them. Thus the mixture can he stored in a stockpile or in a silo until the pellets have hardened sufficiently. The concentrate is separated from the pellets by means of screening. The concentrate is returned to the balling operation and the pellets are either shipped to the blast furnace or stored for final hardening.

Classifiers that are used to separate granular materials into a coarse and a fine stream, are considered. Fundamental Equations are presented which apply to all, such Classifiers and all feed size distributions. The practical, real Classifier is compared quantitatively with the perfect. Classifier. A Formula is introduced for the Real Classifier Selectivity, that defines what portion of each particle size is sent to the coarse outlet duct. This selectivity function is characterized by three Parameters, one of which (b) is a numerical measure of the sharpness of classification. A new dimensionless variable (J) appears in Equations and Graphs for recirculating load, product size distribution and specific surface in the classified product. This variable combines the effects of sharpness of separation, Classifier setting and fineness of a Rosin-Rammler Type feed to the Classifier. Classifier efficiency is defined, based on Specific Surface.
