A number of forces are at work that are now having an influence on coal handling systems. Changes are occurring and will be occurring at an increasing rate during the next few years. 1. Environmental concerns will dictate that dust pollution and spontaneous combustion and its resulting problems be rigidly controlled. 2. Slurry pipelines will be a reality despite the opposition of the railroads because they are economical and make good business sense. Artifical roadblocks can only survive for a limited time. 3. Coal is now and will remain the most economic fuel, particularly for power generation. This is true in most of the developed nations not just the United States. Increase in demand requires a close inspection of transportation systems. 4. A projected major increase in the export of U.S. coals may never occur without major port developments not the least of which will be the ability to accommodate large ships without demurrage time now affecting such shipments at U.S. Ports.

The Velvet mine is located in the Big Indian district of the Colorado Plateau. The general area, also known as the Lisbon Valley district, is about 65 kilometers southeast of Moab, Utah and about 120 Kilometers southwest of Grand Junction, Colorado. As shown by the slide, the Velvet area is typical of the high desert of the southwest United States. The elevation at the decline collar is 1,967 meters above sea level. To date, the Velvet has produced 1.5 million kilograms of U308 and 2.1 million kilograms of V205. The current production averages over 4,000 metric tons of ore per month. Access to the Velvet mine is by a 1,160 meter long decline. Fresh air is supplied through the decline and a 152 centimeter cased borehole. Contaminated air is removed by two 152 centimeter cased boreholes. This study evaluated the effects of collector type amide-amine compared with those of conventional etheramine acetate (both cationic collectors) on the surface properties of quartz and hematite. An examination of certain properties of the reagents indicated that the new collector amide-amine has CMC (critical micelle concentration) and pKa values (100 mg/L and 8.2, respectively) significantly lower than those of etheramine (800 mg/L and 9.4, respectively). Microflotation tests showed that the recoveries of quartz with amide-amine in all the concentrations tested were higher than those with etheramine. This is attributed to its lower CMC and pKa values. The selectivity window between quartz and hematite flotation using amideamine was higher at pH 10.5 (approximately 80% for 5 mg/L). Therefore, the use of starch is not necessary in siliceous itabirite flotation by amide–amine collector. Zeta potential measurements and infrared spectra reveal that the adsorption of amide-amine collector on quartz surface occurs mainly by electrostatic attraction. Considering the better collectability of amide-amine for quartz flotation and lower adsorption affinity for hematite surface than etheramine, the amide-amine is a promising collector to be used in reversal iron ore flotation.

Alluvial deposits of major rivers often provide relatively uniform tunneling conditions. However, these conditions pose specific challenges due to the tunneling behavior of the granular soils as flowing ground, if unsupported. This paper describes the design considerations and construction experiences gained during the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) drives for the Annacis Island WWTP New Outfall System in the Vancouver, B.C. metropolitan area. Meeting the design criteria for connecting two (2) deep on-land shafts with an in-river riser manifold required advancing a 5-meter-diameter slurry TBM through the Fraser Rivers sands and at a tunnel invert elevation with a baseline hydrostatic head of 3.4 bar.

Many unique ventilation problems have been faced as Avery Island Mine's large openings have been mined. High humidity of outside air combines with the hygroscopic salt to create a corrosive atmosphere. Massive rooms preclude routine use of brattices to direct air flow to the working faces. Large amounts of explosives are consumed in single blasts. Resulting concussion pounds air control structures and ANFO ignition creates large amounts of nitrogen dioxide in single rooms. Geologic constraints confine new shafts and slopes to areas thought to be free of potential ground water hazards. Dust control techniques are limited by dry product demanded by customers. The Avery Island Mine's ventilation system has evolved to deal practically with the conditions and to dependably provide fresh air to the miners. International Salt Company's Avery Island Salt Mine, a multiple level room and pillar operation, has been mined steadily since about 1900. It is known as one of the "Five Island" salt dome mines of South Louisiana's Gulf Coast. Production from the area places Louisiana first in United States rock salt mined tonnage, according to the United States Bureau of Nines, 1982 (1). International Salt Company is a major force in U.S. salt production, as it also operates mines in Detroit, Michigan; Cleveland, Ohio; and Retsof, New York; a solar salt facility in Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles; and a solution mining plant at Watkins Glen, New York.

An aggregate resource study was done for southern Washoe County, Nevada, which contains the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area and a population of about 300,000. The study included an inventory of existing operations, projection of future demand, identification of potential aggregate resources based on geology, and determination of economic potential of these resources. Economic potential was determined by the integration of GIS layers that included aggregate potential, distance from market, distance from major and minor transportation arteries, and elevation. The investigation resulted in a determination that resources of high quality aggregate sufficient for future consumption are present in southern Washoe county; the limiting factor for future utilization is accessibility.

While the late 1960's are known as the years of the public recognition of impending environmental crises, the 1970's will be known as the decade of public concern for improving the quality of that environment. One of the present major environmental concerns is the temporary disturbance resulting from coal surface or open cast mining. To realize that this concern will continue in the future, one need only observe the daily news media. Increasing energy demands in the U.S., a doubling of electrical power consumption each decade during the present century, and the projected needs for the remainder of the century are indica¬tions that coal surface mining as a major extractive industry will continue. Coal and lignite, prime energy resources and extremely abundant in these United States, in the face of seemingly limited gas, oil and uranium reserves, are both destined for expanded future use. Presently some extremely serious techno-logical and environmental problems are associated with the develop¬ment and use of nuclear power. It is true that the extraction and use of coal as an energy fuel poses disruptive problems for the environment, but the solutions to many of the problems are known or can be solved within a reasonable time framework. Certainly our national well-being and continued survival, as a free nation within the world community, automatically dictate the continued use of the coal resource for energy. Concurrently, those engaged in coal surface mining, with the temporary disturbance of the land and water resources, must also realistically conclude that public concern for maintaining and improving the quality of the environment will not diminish. The combined study of ground water regime and rock deformations has resulted in the theoretical substantiation of the common principles for analysis of the hydrodynamic and geomechanical processes Within the scope of unique scientific direction -hydrogeomechanics (Mironenko and Shestakov, 1974). The hydrogeomechanical models are widely used now for the analysis and forecasting the extremely important processes connected with the safe and efficient mining operations, as well as with the protection of geological medium. Among these processes are: -deformations of the open-pit slopes and spoil dumps; -consolidation of rocks due to the ground-water pressure drop; -water-end-rock material inrush into mine workings caused by deformations of the undermined rock mass; -geodynamical processes due to the changes in ground water regime; -artificial hydrofracturing in rocks; -transformations of clay linings under the tailing ponds and other technical water basins.

Coal in most refuse ponds including those owned by Consolidation Coal Company can be recovered by froth flotation techniques. Laboratory studies show that the flotation conditions required for coal recovery varied greatly from pond to pond. The variables found to be most important for high coal recovery and low product ash were: a) the amount and type of flotation reagents and b) the degree of conditioning before flotation. Coal recovery at a rate of 0.504 kg/s (2 tons/hr) was demonstrated at a pond site employing a mobile froth flotation unit.

Adequate planning for the development, operation, and reclamation of a surface mine requires attention to present and future uses of land, both on the mine site and in the mine vicinity. This paper outlines land use implications of surface mining, and suggests procedures that could link mine planning, mine operation, and reclamation to more general land use concerns. Mining is viewed as a temporary use of land that may irretrievably commit land resources away from some future activities, but may allow other uses, some of which may have been impossible without mining. The paper accepts the premise that surface mining should attempt to minimize environ-mental damage and to maximize future alternative uses of land by appropriate reclamation. I. The plastics industry runs into the billions, both in the dollar value of its finished, products and in the pounds of plastic raw material produced. It is, too, one of the fastest growing industries with a 300 percent increase in production in the past ten years. Informed estimates set 5.9 billions pounds as the plastic volume for 1959. Statistically, this is equivalent to a per capita consumption of 25 pounds in the United States. Plastics are man-made materials in contrast to natural materials like wood and are a family of materials -- not a single material - each member having special advantages. A generally accepted definition; for plastics is; a large and varied group of materials which consist, wholly or in part, of combinations of carbon with oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, and other organic and inorganic elements. This, while solid in the finished state, at some stage in its manufacture is soft enough to be formed into various shapes, most usually through the application either singly or together of heat and pressure. Many combinations and many different materials are thus possible. Therefore, for purposes of simplification, most plastics can be classified under one of 14 recognized basic family groups. These groups in turn generally can be further classified into one of two major subdivisions - thermosetting or thermoplastics. A few plastics are in between and they can be formulated to be either thermosetting or thermoplastic.

A new hydrometallurgical process has been developed to recover copper from sulfide ores. Copper is leached in a staged reactor system utilizing nitric and sulfuric acids at 105°C. Iron is removed from the pregnant liquor as a jarosite and cathode copper is electrowon directly from the purified pregnant liquor. The spent electrolyte is recycled. Nitrogen oxides evolved from the leach are reconverted to nitric acid and are also recycled. Sulfur is rejected as S°, jarosite and gypsum. The process is highly versatile and can recover precious metals, molybdenum and zinc, when these elements are present. Continuous, integrated, semi-pilot plant operations using chalcopyrite ores demonstrated 99% copper leaching and production of cathode grade copper. Economic evaluation shows that the process is competitive with pyrometallurgical and other hydrometallurgical processes.

TBMand roadheader are two dominating excavation machines in underground tunnelling projects. The performance of these two tunnelling machines has been reviewed and analysed individually by many researchers from multiple points of view. However, there are almost no studies that have made an extensive comparison between these two machines, mostly from financial points of view. The current study is intended to characterize both financial and technical status of these two mechanical tunnelling machines in one of the biggest coal mines in Iran. The main objective of this study is to define the best method and equipment that meets a predefined economic goal, which is mainly to maximize the net present value. To this end, a technical and financial model based on the geomechanical and financial parameters involved in the project has been prepared and the financial part of the project has been carried out by applying COMFAR III financial analysis software. Subsequently, a sensitivity analysis of the model was conducted in order to evaluate the effect of involved parameters on the project. According to the results, a roadheader has better economic justification than a TBM, while the TBM has a better advance rate than the roadheader.

Over the years the coal industry in Alabama has generated about 150 million tons of fine waste coal, increasing at a rate of 2 million tons/year, during mining and cleaning operations. Reclamation of the fine-size wastes containing 20-60% by weight clean coal provides, free of charge, mined and crushed feedstocks for coal recovery and eliminates a major source of acid water pollution. Tests were made on the impounded wastes and current plant discharges to recover the coal fraction by sizing, gravity and flotation techniques. Gravity separation of the plus 100 mesh material produced commercial grade coal averaging 8.2% ash, 0.8% sulfur and 13,350 Btu/lb. However, the coal recovery was relatively low at 50-65%. Froth flotation using mechanical and froth column methods gave similar coal products at much higher coal recovery of 87-93%. The coal produced analyzed 10% ash and 1.1% sulfur.

When studying the feasibility of using autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding, operating and engineering companies frequently request assistance from the mill manufacturers in three areas - 1. Recommendations for studying the suitability of autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding for the specific ore. 2. Mill sizing, to accomplish required grind. 3. Recommendations on mill design and operation. Rod mills and ball mills are selected by the use of bench scale standard grindability tests and established calculation procedures, of which the most frequently used are the Bond Grindability tests and the Bond Work Index equation(1). The accuracy of these have been reviewed by C. A. Rowland in his papers, showing the correlation of work indices calculated from plant operating data and laboratory grindability tests(2)(3). The selection of autogenous and semi-autogenous primary mills has not reached the stage where mill size selection can be made from bench scale tests. Considerably more extensive testing will be necessary than required for selecting rod mills and ball mills.

"INTRODUCTION Contemporary city is made of layers. Physical structures layers (built fabric, residential, commercial industrial etc. ), infrastructural layers (below and above ground), “green” layers (parks and open spaces), and also informational layers, i.e. connections, links, between sectors of the city and other territories. The “city of layers” concept represents the exercise of “rebuilding the city” per each layer, highlighting those physical built structures that are functional to define a relation. For example, if consider the “connection” relation, the city is re-designed by considering only transportation built structures. The layer obtained in such fashion is hence the “transportation” layer, including below grade infrastructures (subways) and above grade lines (rail, bus, tramways etc.), as below shown in Figure 1.In this sense, the contemporary city is represented by separate constructs assembled together according to a specific functionality (e.g. “connection”). As a consequence, the relation between what is built underground, and the related above-ground development, can be perceived in his most evident appearance. What could happen within the contemporary city if the planning process would begin from below to above and not vice-versa?INTERACTION The question risen in the introduction is strategic when approaching the difficult task of designing (or re-designing) a multi-level organism like the contemporary city. Nowadays, the theme of integration between underground and at-grade master planning has become the subject of many urban renovation projects, where the design process has begun within the transportation layer, underground, and further developed by interacting with at-grade structures already existing or in phase of design.A series of case studies where below/above interaction plays a key role in the project will be further analyzed. Moreover, it is relevant to understand the mechanics of an urban transformation process that originates within the transportation layer and ends up with the design of entire sectors of the city. The Transit Oriented Development approach is a useful tool to clearly understand such transformation process. TOD has become, in particular in the last decade, one of the most effective tools for urban design, in order to solve simultaneously the many different instances related to transit planning, urban design and real estate market."

Three major suites of igneous rocks were erupted in the Great Basin in middle and late Cenozoic time. The first, most likely, resulted from sub- duction of a Pacific plate (Farallon plate) beneath the North American plate, resulting in eruption of andesitic rocks in the northern Great Basin between 42 and 43 m.y. ago. Between 34 and 17 m.y. ago, igneous activity migrated to the southwest, largely as eruption of volumincus rhyolite-quartz latite ash-flow sheets, ending about 17 a.y. ago with the onset of crustal extension and north-south-trending Basin and Range (rift) faulting. The second volcanic suite erupted between 17 and 8 m.y. ago in the northern Great Basin; is mostly basaltic or bimodal basalt-rhyolite. The third volcanic suite consists of andesitic and rhyolitic lavas and some basalt erupted between about 22 to 6 m.y. ago in the western Great Basin along the northwest-trending Walker Lane fault zone. Hydrothermal ore deposits are associated with all suites of igneous rocks, but the largest production has come from mines associated with andesitic rocks of the third (western Great Basin) suite. The oldest (34 to 42 m.y.) andesitic rocks (first suite) of the northern Great Basin have produced some large deposits; slightly younger silicic rocks of this suite are mostly barren. Many small ore deposits are associated with the 17- to 8-m.y.-old basalts (second suite) of northern Nevada.

Fluoride activation has been evaluated by Hallimond tube flotation of collophanite in terms of fluoride concentration, conditioning time, pH, and temperature. The results reveal that efficient oleate flotation of collophanite can be achieved by fluoride activation. Experimental results of fluoride adsorption by collophanite suggest that, at low fluoride concentration, a fluoroapatite-type compound may form on the collophanite surface by chemisorption of fluoride ions at calcium sites. At high fluoride concentration, calcium fluoride appears to form at the collophanite surface involving a surface precipitation phenomenon. The formation of CaF2 on the surface of fluoride-treated collophanite is further substantiated by the FTIR spectroscopic measurements, which suggest a metathetic exchange with phosphate from the collophanite lattice during the surface precipitation process.

Phytotechnologies use plants to remediate various media impacted with different types of contaminants. These technologies can be implemented either in situ or ex situ. The affected media in which phytotechnologies can be applied include soil, sediments, groundwater and surface water. They are best applied at sites with shallow contamination of organic, nutrient, or metal pollutants that are amenable to one of five treatment options: phytoextraction, phytotrans-formation, rhizosphere, bioremediation, phyto-stabilization or rhizofiltration. Phytoremediation can be used along or, in some cases, in place of mechanical cleanup methods. Phytoremediation can be used to clean up metals, pesticides, solvents, explosives, crude oil, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and landfill leachates.
