Green algae have been found to be much more resistant to heavy metals than blue-green algae. Several mechanisms for resistance to toxicity have been recognized in laboratory strains of Cyanidium, Chlorella and Chlamycomonas. Cyanidium and Chlorella both grow at low pH in acid mine water. Cyanidium removes metal ions from solution by precipitation as metal sulfides whereas Chlorella complexes metal ions to the cell surface i.e. cell wall) and therefore functions as an efficient ion exchange vehicle. We have shown that Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ and Na+ are of critical importance in both the resistance and bioaccumulation of toxic heavy metals.

The new, 2.600 m long pipe under the river Elbe in Hamburg/Germany required for 2 traffic lanes, emergency lane and space for utilities a boring diameter of 14,20 m(46,6 ft). According the geology (glacial deposits consisting of clay, sand and marl, all containing big boulders) a Slurry-Shield with crusher was selected. With a minimum cover of 7 m and a maximum pressure of 5,6 bar extensive ground treatment was necessary to make the drive feasible. The machine contains a lot of new developments. The drive was finished in spring 2000 so all experiences can be reported. A special risk sharing contract avoided completely litigation.

"A longwall mining method is a productive mining method of coal extraction that involves the complete removal of large, rectangular panels of coal. Since this method causes deformations through the overlying strata to the ground surface, the surface- and ground-water regime above the longwall panels may be adversely affected and drained into the lower strata. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of longwall mining subsidence on surface- and ground-water systems.This study is a site-specific hydrogeologic analysis conducted before, during, and after panel retreat at a site located over two selected longwall panels in the Pittsburgh coal seam in Greene County of Pennsylvania. Mine subsidence causes fractures in the overlying strata and enlarges bedding plane separations, increasing the effective porosity and storativity of the overlying strata. Generally, the water in deeper aquifers located in the lower fractured zone drains into the mine void due to the vertical fractures. Moreover, the water level does not recover after longwall mining (but may recover when the mine is flooded). The upper aquifers over the thick aquitard layers may maintain the water level or drop slightly during longwall mining and recover very quickly. The reason is that the underlying aquiclude layer has less change in porosity and permeability after longwall mining (Carver, 1994).A groundwater flow model-MODFLOW was used to predict the water table contours for the periods of pre- and post-mining conditions. The hydraulic gradients of post-subsidence became larger outside the panels and smaller inside the panels than that of the pre-subsidence. The groundwater hydraulic heads above the longwall panel dropped a maximum 50 ft in the study panels. The shallows monitoring wells that were less than 50 ft deep from the surface were deeply affected by longwall mining subsidence. For the intermediate wells that were more than 85 ft deep from the surface, where strata movement acted as a unit during longwall mining subsidence, there were little impacts of longwall mining on the intermediate wells in the study area. For the deep wells that were located below the Waynesburg sandstone, the water was drained to the underlying strata or even into the mine gob."

Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, I'd like to take just a moment of your time before we examine the current position of the asbestos industry and its market outlook to take a searching look at the product itself. I feel that if we are to understand the problems that beset this basic mining and manufacturing industry and, more important, if we are to appreciate the solutions to these problems that I plan to put forward in a few moments' time, then we had better look at asbestos from the proper perspective. Asbestos has a unique combination of properties - properties not found in any other natural substance or man-made material. This has resulted in asbestos finding its way - in fact, being welcomed - into literally hundreds of applications.

Adequate understanding of the subsurface conditions along the alignment of a planned tunnel is key for managing project risk. For achieving this understanding, geotechnical borings are conducted during design. Where their spacing cannot reduce the risk of encountering differing site conditions (DSC) in-between borings to an acceptable level, supplemental exploration methodologies or data evaluation approaches may be required to bridge the data gap. This paper compares the exploration design approaches of recent tunnel boring machine (TBM) and microtunnel boring machine (MTBM) projects in the quaternary deposits along the Eastern Seaboard, the glacial geology of the Pacific Northwest, the sedimentary rocks of the South, and metamorphic rocks in western Germany, describing their respective effectiveness of managing DSC risk.

Mining is likely to be targeted by The United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) as one of its key enforcement targets for fiscal year 2002-2003. Identifying the mining industry as an enforcement target, coupled with an increase in enforcement activity in recent years, places each mining operation at increased risk of receiving enforcement attention. A properly developed and implemented Environmental Management System (“EMS”) tailored for your operation is invaluable in reducing the risk of incurring liability for non-compliance. At the heart of an effective EMS is an audit program that checks the company’s compliance with environmental requirements. In addition, audit privilege (in select states), voluntary self-disclosure, and the attorney-client privilege serve as very effective tools for managing those liabilities that may arise during auditing a well-developed program. Of course, these latter tools are effective only if the auditing program is properly structured and properly managed. EPA and some states also provide varying degrees of immunity for environmental violations that are voluntarily disclosed in writing by the company. However, self-disclosure laws and policies typically prescribe stringent requirements for parties seeking to take advantage of them. For example: U.S. EPA has recently extended the time period in which to provide full written self-disclosure to 21 days. However, U.S. EPA’s revised Self-Disclosure guidance also addresses when a company obtains knowledge of a violation for purposes of triggering the 21-day clock and specifically extends the knowledge requirement to include the company’s agents and consultants. This expansion increases the difficulty companies may have in clearly defining and managing when they obtained knowledge. The coal mining industry must be able to compete with alternate sources of fuel for the utility and industrial customers. If the industry is unable to control transportation costs, either due to government interference, or for other reasons, then mining costs must be kept down. Australia, South Africa, Canada, (and later Colombia) will take larger shares of the export market if mining costs are not kept competitive. The government's environmental regulations must be met without incremental increases in mining costs. Entrepreneurial instincts must be retained by the industry to provide for their investment in the future. What are the Problems with Existing Research? Government funding for coal mining research has been reduced or virtually eliminated. BCR (Bituminous Coal Research) is now a membership- supported organization, but its primary focus has been on health and safety-oriented research. BCR, however, is now attempting to widen its scope and conduct other types of research. There are almost no funds in EPRI's (Electric Power Research Institute) program for coal mining research. Large mining companies do some research for their own purposes and needs, but this is proprietary and therefore results are not shared with the remainder of the industry. The mining industry as a unit is not undertaking productivity (systems) oriented research in any common or cohesive manner.

Improved liberation and flotation of kerogen from eastern oil shale were accomplished with high-temperature grinding and a1 so with the addition of fuel oil during the grinding stage. Liberation measurements indicated that possible coalescence and aggregation phenomenon of kerogen particles during grinding may reflect this behavior. Additionally, ultrasonic treatment of the rougher concentrate prior to cleaning improved the quality of separation.

The first Model 480 SALA-HGMS R carousel high gradient magnetic separator was recently manufactured (Figure 1). The carousel's design was based upon the high gradient magnetic separation technology developed and owned by Sala Magnetics Incorporated, Cambridge, Massachusetts. After a short (approximately 300 hours) in-house mechanical and electrical test and break-in period, the carousel was ready for a long term demonstration test. This paper describes the demonstration plant and operational performance of the Model 480 HGMS treating a low grade iron ore tailings. A location convenient to Sala International's main office in Sala, Sweden was desirable because Sala engineers and technicians were to operate the demonstration plant. The Strassa iron ore mine in central Sweden was chosen because it fit most of the criteria that was important for a good demonstration site. The Strassa mine is part of the state owned Svenskt Stal AB. The mine produces about 320,000 tons of iron concentrate per year consisting of 200,000 tons of magnitite concentrate and 120,000 tons of hematite concentrate.

The cases of no auxiliary ventilation and ventilation with tubing were mathematically modeled, using a turbulent dispersion model. The scooptram that is used to load is modeled as a variable-speed, variable-strength source of pollutants moving in and out of the dead-ended drift. Model predictions are compared to experimental measurements. A parametric analysis was performed to determine the effect of exhaust pipe location and time spent out of the drift, as well as to determine if a relationship existed between CO2 and NO levels. It was concluded from this analysis that when modeling a load-haul-dump cycle, it is necessary to use a model that has the capability of predicting changes in source strength as well as source location. It was also determined that four relevant factors include effective heading height, apparent longitudinal diffusion coefficient, transverse concentration gradient at the face, and average dispersion width of the exhaust jet. As these factors change with heading geometry and ventilation configuration, they were determined experimentally, Carbon dioxide was used as a tracer to calibrate the model; since, knowing the fuel flow rate, it is possible to calculate CO2 production. The above four factors in the computer model were calculated using a regression analysis, comparing predicted local concentrations to measured local concentrations. The model was then verified after this calibration process using additional experimental results. With the calibrated model, it is possible to predict pollutant concentrations at any location in the heading using an engine map and the previously calculated flow field. A parametric analysis shows that the exhaust pipe location can have a significant impact on operator exposure to exhaust gases. It was also shown that NO concentration varies directly with C02 levels. Predictions using the dynamic model are contrasted with constant source strength (pollutant flow rate) results. An analysis of these predictions for computing time-weighted average NO shows the dynamic model predictions of operator exposure to this pollutant to be less than one-half of the value predicted using a constant source model.

FTIR measurements using a special ATR cell were carried out to investigate the adsorption of two thiol collectors, potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) and sodium diethyl dithlophoshate (NaDTP), on an unoxidized lead sulfide surface. Both qualitative and quantitative determinations of the collectors were made at the coverages from two monolayers down to 2% of the monolayer. The experiments revealed that the thiol collector species coordinate to the lead atoms at the surface of lead sulfide but the surface products distinctly differ from the precipitated bulk lead compounds. There exists a linear relationship between the coverage and the signal intensity of the IR spectra within the coverage range studied.

The paper describes the unique operating features of the Lebanon Concentrator Plant wherein both magnetic concentration and froth flotation are used. Chalcopyrite is selectively floated by the use of dual collectors, Aerofloats and secondary butyl xanthate. Both potassium ethyl xanthate and sodium isopropyl xanthate (dual collectors) are dissolved and emulsified with pine oil for the flotation of the pyrite. Sketches describing the plant operations are presented and plant operating metallurgical results obtained are also given. The optimum production of minerals by the froth flotation process is normally achieved [ ] smooth operating conditions, The process, because of its many variables, becomes an art as well as a science. Therefore, any phase of the operation which will aid the operator in his control of the numerous variables will help produce a smoother operating plant, One of the most important variables which the operator deals with is the addition of reagents, These are usually costly items and should be used discretely with minimum amount of waste, The danger is that ,this emphasis may reduce the reagent amount to a point below that required, or, on the other hand an excessive amount is added, Both conditions usually yield poor results. The drea of the metallurgist is to provide the operator with the tools enabling him to produce a good mineralized froth at all times. Normally the operator has no control concerning the type of reagents which he must use. This has usually been worked out for him in the laboratory and by plant-scale tests. He does have limited authority to control the amounts of the reagents at his disposal. This, I believe, is as it should be. However, the operator should be provided with the best combination of reagents for his particular job. The providing of this combination of reagents for his particular job, The providing of this combination is often difficult, yet it is very important in order to yield good results, With this in mind, the dual collector idea was introduced for the selective flotation of chalcopyrite, and also later for the flotation of pyrite at the Concentrator Plant of the Bethlehem Cornwall Corporation in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Supplying several types of collectors has given the operator an additional effective tool, even though great variations are encountered in ore tonnage treated and in ore composition, This paper deals with the use of the dual collectors and with the addition of the reagents in the form of a pine oil emulsion, or more accurately, a pine oil suspension. It is hoped that other operators may find the ideas helpful. There does not seem, to me, to be definite scientific fact which would substantiate the necessity for the use of dual collectors. However, in actual operations, the metallurgical results at Lebanon became more uniform with the use of dual collectors, I look upon it as an "insurance policy" which greatly aids the operator during those periods when he is having trouble, One theory has been advanced, i.e. one collector has a greater tendency to float the coarser minerals, whereas the other one may float the finer ones. Consequently, a combination of the two collectors will result in optimum recoveries, There has been some evidence that this is true, but it is not conclusive, on the other hand, the use of a xanthate-pine oil suspension (or emulsion) should speed up the surface reaction of the collector with the sulfide minerals, result¬ing in more uniform flotation, This has definitely happened in our particular case. A more interesting unexplainable observation has also occurred; i.e., the xanthate solution does not appear to lose its strength as rapidly when it is in the form of an emulsion (or suspension), This was first observed when a 50 gallon drum of a 20% ethyl xanthate solution was taken to Wilmington, Delaware, for a laboratory test, using a homogenizer to produce the xanthate-pine oil emulsion. Upon arrival, the drum of xanthate had developed a considerable internal pressure, The relief of this pressure was accompanied by a strong odor, When the emulsion was returned to Lebanon for the plant test orders were issued to release the pressure prior to emptying the emulsion. Nopressure had developed within the drum and there was no unusual odor present, Since this time it has been observed that xanthate pine oil suspensions have greatly decreased the possible decomposition of the xanthate solutions. In fact, suspensions have been exposed for more than a month without apparently effecting their reactions in the flotation plant. On the other hand, we found that the regularly mixed concentrated xanthate solutions, after standing for several days, did not give the same results as the freshly made ones. This effect was greatly reduced by the use of xanthate pine oil suspension (or emulsion)

S. Budirsky J.B. Gwiazda's article deals with an interesting problem that has not been studied thoroughly up to now. Gwiazda has proposed a technical solution that eliminates horizontal load imposed by the supports on the roof. That load is due to a discrepancy between the trajectories of the canopy and the overlying strata. It is true that the improved lemniscate guidance system proposed by Gwiazda could eliminate the horizontal load but, on the other hand, it would represent a higher cost of the supports, and it would complicate the already complicated mechanism of powered supports. That is why we must be convinced that the proposed improvement is actually needed. From that point of view, the following questions should be elucidated. As shown in Fig. 1, the point 0 travels along the curve a, which produces horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the coal face. As stated by Gwiazda, "such a high load is capable of destroying the roof above the support, causing rock debris to be scattered around the face." The results of our measurements carried out in coal mines of the Czechoslovak part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin show that the convergence in the modern type of powered supports does not exceed several millimeters (not more than 10) per hour. Similar conclusions were drawn from field measurements performed in the Polish part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (see S. Romanowicz and H. Szopka in Proceedings, Scientific and Technical Symposium Simmex'85, Katowice, Poland, pp. 73-83). The small vertical closure of the supports also induces a small horizontal displacement of the canopy. In addition to this, the transmission of forces between the roof and the canopy is influenced by the layer of debris on it, i.e., the canopy slides without imposing a greater horizontal load on the roof. This was deduced from field measurements of Voest-Alpine F 4/4500 powered supports equipped with rams instead of the common front lemniscate links (denoted as 1 in Fig. 5). In these supports, the pressurizing of the space of piston rod (1a in Fig. 5) causes the rams to close, which induces horizontal load on the roof in a direction toward the coal face. After the setting of a support unit, the pressure in the piston rod space was found to drop, frequently to zero, because the small horizontal sliding between the canopy and the debris or inside the debris caused the horizontal reaction from the roof to fall to zero, although the debris were pressurized by vertical setting load. As a consequence, there was no horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof. A rise of the horizontal load was recorded only after the passage of the shearer and during lowering of the adjacent units. Thorough information on the results of the aforementioned field measurement is given in the paper, "Analysis of the performance of shield powered supports installed in a thick seam," published in Mechanizacja i automatyzacja gornictwa, 1982, No. 12, pp. 38-46. An English translation of the paper is available from the author. We have deduced from our observations that horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof in the direction toward the coal face is useful for roof control because it limits the displacement of the immediate roof toward the gob particularly during the rise working. We came to the conclusion that horizontal load on the roof toward the coal face should be induced on purpose. Could Mr. Gwiazda prove with the results of field measurements his contrary opinion? Has the small horizontal displacement of the canopy toward the face actually had an adverse effect on the roof? As shown in Fig. 2, during the setting of a support unit, the canopy imposes a horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the gob. In this case, I share Gwiazda's opinion that the horizontal load could have an adverse effect on the roof. Nevertheless, two important circumstances were neglected - the horizontal compliance of the supports and the interaction of adjacent units. The question of the compliance was analyzed precisely by I. Krumnacker in Gluckauf-Forschungshefte, 1984, No. 5, pp. 219-223. In this first report, we present a preliminary model based on the simple binary sys¬tem of component B occluded in a matrix of compo¬nent A, for the case where fracture planes can pass with equal ease through A or B. By assuming that the volume fraction of B in AB in the overall matrix is small, which is realistic for many prac¬tical systems, the problem is reduced to a one-¬dimensional treatment which is conceptually easy to understand. The model was programmed for Monte Carlo simulation, and an analytical solution also developed based on the assumption of zero or one mineral fragment per particle. Preliminary ex¬perimental confirmation using a synthetic "mineral¬-host matrix" of known amount and size of B in AB is presented.

Further discussion includes: critical examination of the recently completed EPA Areawide EIS; potential effects of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976; the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977; current local and state laws; and summary of studies on radiochemical effects of mining, seepage from gypsum ponds, and dewatering of waste clays.

This paper is primarily a report on the process of using oolitic aragonite, as received from Marconi& Ocean Industries, Ltd. without further processing, for a major portion of the raw feed to a rotary kiln producing cement clinker. Oolitic aragonite is a high purity calcium carbonate material, dust free, with the appearance of a course, white sand. It is farmed when under the right conditions of temperature ocean currents, and ocean floor topography. The calcium carbonate will precipitate into small spherical particles on the ocean floor. These oceanic conditions are correct to cause precipitation of the calcium carbonate near Ocean Cay in the Bahama Island chain. The present growing deposit near Ocean Cay is in the billions of tons and is mined by a relatively shallow-operation hydraulic dredge. The aragonite thus formed is en orthorhombic crystaline form of calcium carbonate with a specific gravity of approximately 2.9. At a temperature of 505°C. (940F), the aragonite converts to the hexagonal crystal of calcite with a specific gravity of 2.6 to 2.7. This change in specific gravity weakens the structure of the particles but the individual pieces are still fairly hard. When the material is then calcined at 900°C (1650°F), the particles retain their shape but become soft and will break up under finger pressure.

Slope failures very commonly occur during a long period of heavy rainfall and groundwater rise. The failures pose a substantial risk to people, infrastructure, and equipment downslope. In the recent past, the mining industry has faced an increase in tailings dam failure due to several reasons including pore pressure increases in the dams. Many failures have been observed to occur during times of water level fluctuations but the critical factors that influence the initiation of slope failures still need to be adequately clarified. To investigate these factors, laboratory experiments were conducted on model sandy slopes to determine pore pressure-induced slope failure initiation. This study also presents a method to examine water seepage through soil slopes using an ultraviolet (UV) dye and a UV flashlight. The small-scale model test simulation demonstrated failures induced by either water percolation from the upslope tank at a constant level or by raising the water level at intervals. A bottom chamber fully filled with water to replicate groundwater rise was also simulated. The soil slope was monitored at every stage to study the deformations and behavior until failure occurred. Results gathered from the controlled laboratory conditions were useful for the verification of the numerical modeling method created in the computer program Slide. The analysis showed that slope failure always occurred when the toe was fully saturated. High pore pressures and seepage forces reduce the shear force at the toe to almost zero causing it to slide. A comparison of slope height to water level also indicated an average of 96% water level to cause a failure. At this point, the soil slope is fully saturated and has no matric suction. The findings in this study show that, by monitoring the moisture content of slopes, failures can be predicted.

An AIME transaction by P.L. Allsman (1960), "Analysis of Explosive Action in Breaking Rock," contains many useful concepts applicable to blast design. Of special interest was the derivation of a heave blasting burden formula, which is important in establishing the maximum burden. Unfortunately, its derivation contains a fundamental error and then a compensating one. This formula was: [ ] The derivation used the impulse-momentum principle, with a 0.3 m thick (1 ft thick) radius of rock mass being acted on by an explosive impulse. However, the rock weight was not converted to mass by dividing by the gravitational constant. This mistake can be verified by checking the units in the formula, which resolve into m%-sec instead of meters. Adding the gravitational constant corrects this: [ ] If the minimum velocity is now taken as 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec), as was recommended, excessively large burdens result. Any appropriate rock velocity should be capable of throwing the rock mass a minimum distance so that the swell needed for breakage can occur. Unless the burden is extremely small and the bench height is very high, it is unlikely that a velocity of only 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec) will be sufficient. A review of the literature indicates that average rock velocities observed by camera studies typically range from 15 to 30 m/sec (50 to 100 ft per sec) (duPont deNemours and Co., 1977; Tansey, 1979). On this basis, a minimum rock velocity of about 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) would be expected and not 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). When a velocity of 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) is inserted into the corrected formula, the results approximate those of the original formula with a velocity of 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). Unfortunately, mining and mining accidents have gone hand-in-hand since man first started to extract ore from the ground. In the first published treatise on mining, De Re Metallica, Georgius Agricola (1556) stated that cold, water, dust, stagnant and foul air, roof falls, falls from ladders and demons all caused injury and death in the mines of his day. Although demons are no longer considered a cause of accidents in modern mining, the other factors remain with us still. The United States government started keeping track of fatalities with the establishment of the federal Bureau of Mines in 1910. Successor agencies, such as the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) continue to track fatalities today. Looking at the records, it can be seen that coal mine fatalities dropped from 2821 in 1910 to only 27 in 2004. The reduction in fatalities and injuries didn’t “just happen.” It took concentrated effort from the entire mining industry: miners, supervisors, safety officials, mining inspectors and mining researchers. But first, specific hazards must be identified before they can be corrected. In past, coal mining accidents have been analyzed by: type (roof fall, electrical, etc), mine attribute (location, seam height, etc.), and aspects of the mineworker (work experience, job classification, etc). Much of this research helped to direct the industry’s attention to where additional vigilance and safety training was needed. No doubt this directed effort has led, at least in part, to the decrease in coal mining fatalities. This paper takes a novel look at coal mining fatalities: it examines the risk of fatalities based on how long the mine has been open.

Coalbed methane (CBM) is currently being produced from a relatively small area in the Dunkard and Pocahontas basins, in the northern and central parts of the Appalachian Basin, respectively. In general, much of the production occurs where the coal beds are beneath 500 feet or more of overburden, where the rank of the coal is high-volatile B or greater (%Ro >0.8), and where the natural fracture system is enhanced by structural deformation. It is anticipated that near-term CBM development will continue within these areas and will expand in the Appalachian basin as technology improves and as the price of gas rises.
