Smooth roll crushers are widely used as secondary crushers, operating most effectively when set for size reductions in a ratio between 3 or 4 to I. The feed supplied to these units varies from 13 to 102 mm in size and the product obtained ranges from 13 mm to about 20 mesh. Smooth roll crushers produce very few fines and absolutely no oversize. The diameter otfhe rolls varies with the clearance between them, feed size, and the coefficient of internal friction ofmaterial to be crushed, Detailed calculations of this relationship may be found in Unit operations of Chemical Engineering, (McCabe, W. L., and Smith, J. C., 1967, McGraw Hill, NY, Chapter 26, pg. 825). The geometrical arrangement of the roll crusher is shown on the accompanying sketch. During 1963 more than 200 million tons of coal was consumed by the public utility industry. Ash residual, from the burning of this coal has caused disposal problems. In order to prevent air pollution, dust collection systems have been installed to suppress the fine ash emitted from boilers before it is discharged into the atmosphere. The collected ash, called fly ash, must be removed from the dust collection facilities and disposed in some manner, usually at a substantial cost to the utility. Many years ago fly ash disposal was not a serious problem because the demand for power was relatively low and coarse coal was burned on stoker type traveling grate machines. The low burning rates utilized on these grates did not produce large quantities of air-borne coal ash while the mechanics of this system of burning resulted in a clinkered residue of cinders. Both of these conditions resulted in the production of only small quantities of fly ash. As the demand for electricity increased, a method of burning pulverized coal was developed and was introduced to the public utility industry in 1918 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin.1 This method of firing was considered a significant advance in steam electric generation as it (1) permitted the use of coals that could not be economically fired by other methods and (2) has generally resulted in improved efficiency, greater generating capacity and lower costs.2 The utilization of larger generating units using pulverized coal substantially increased the quantity of fly ash which resulted in a' more severe disposal problem.

The main electrophysical properties, i.e., dielectric constant and electrical conductivity, of pure calcite, quartz and wollastonite mineral samples were measured and their triboelectric charge attributes were investigated by contacting minerals particles with different tribochargers made from different materials. In addition the energetic work function values for mineral samples were estimated due to their acquisition charge. Besides, the behaviour of triboelectrically charged of different particle size fractions of mineral samples were inferred. Finally an attempt were made to translate the findings from single mineral systems to a real carbonate ore. The results exposed good prospects to beneficate the examined minerals by triboelectric separation.

In many multiple-sulphide ore flotation processes, it is desirable to concentrate each of the various valuable minerals into separate products. Although there are a variety of techniques and chemicals which can be employed to produce efficient separation, two basic types of flotation circuits are used: The Differential Flotation Circuit and the Bulk/Selective Flotation Circuit. Figure I depicts these two circuits in their most simplified form for the production of two concentrates and one tailing product. If three or more valuable minerals are present in an ore, a variety of combinations or extensions of these two basic flowsheets may be used. There are many examples of the successful application of both circuit types with ores containing similar minerals. Each ore must be tested individually to decide on which circuit is best. However, the following general statements can be made: 1) The differential circuit will have higher capital and operating costs than will the bulk/selective circuit due to higher rougher capacity requirement. 2) The differential circuit will achieve better separation than will the bulk/selective circuit since it is usually easier to reactivate a depressed mineral than it is to depress an already active mineral. If the deactivation problem with the bulk/selective circuit . . in can be overcome, there is a clear economic argument for its use

Vertically stirred media mills are a highly effective low-footprint solution for the ultrafine grinding of industrial minerals. This work investigates the effect of media density on flow patterns within the mill. Direct irradiation of a media particle leads to decay through positron emission, consequently forming two anti-parallel gamma rays, which allow for the real time tracking of particle position. Grinding media of the same size, but with a range of specific gravities are followed using this method, and the effect on the flow within the mill is revealed. The technique is seen to be an effective method to highlight the velocity profiles within the mill, as well as the zones where grinding is less efficient ? areas of relatively low velocity and high residence time. The changing media is seen to effect the overall flow patterns within the mill, having consequential effects on the efficiency of the grind.

Komatsu America has introduced its 2-MW (2,700-hp), 930E-3 ac electric drive truck with a 290-t(320-st) capacity. The truck is designed to provide increased productivity, lower cost per ton hauled and improved speed and control. The 930E-3 is powered by a Komatsu SSDA16Vl6016-cylinder engine. It is capable of speeds up to 65 km/h(40 mph) and is a 15-percent to 20-percent more productive unit than 218-t (240-st) trucks, at a lower operating cost per ton. The 930E-3 also provides enough torque and speed to get up and off ramps easier than mechanically driven trucks. And it can climb at altitudes up to 3,650 m(12,000 ft) without any fuel deration.

American Girl Mine is located in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains in the southeastern Imperial Valley of Southern California. Production from the current open pit mine and heap leach recovery system began in early 1989. Previous mining and gold recovery took place commencing in 1987 at the Padre Madre site, situated adjacent to the American Girl site to the southwest. In mid-1990, a 790-tonne-per-day underground gold mine and mill went into production. Approximately 6,500 troy ounces of gold per month are recovered from the combined open pit underground mine operation. Copper in the form of Azurite [Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2] and Malachite [Cu2CO3(OH)2] are abundant in the mined ores (Henshaw, 1942). The high solubility of these minerals in caustic cyanide solutions has a negative impact on carbon adsorption and electrowin processes. This paper presents the results of monitoring programs, process chemistry, and control changes introduced at American Girl Mine to abate production complications in the refinery and measures taken to minimize solution gold losses in the adsorption circuit(s).

This geometallurgical study examines the gangue mineral variability at the Bingham Canyon porphyry copper mine in Utah. Understanding an orebody?s mineralogy is important for mine and mill planning because it provides information on the size, texture, and distribution of ore minerals, the relationship between ore and gangue minerals, and the extent and type of alteration. Quantification of the mineralogical variability and properties of an orebody provides valuable input to the ore model and may have a significant effect on recovery optimization. This study was designed to be carried out on an initially detailed scale in order to develop a robust methodology for measuring and quantifying specific parameters, such as the distribution of mineral phases, alteration assemblages and fractures from key ore domains at the Bingham Canyon mine (Figure 1). Details of the methodology are reported below. This technique can be applied to testing the impact of mineralogy on a number of processing parameters. [ ] Figure 1. The samples for this study were collected from the northwest part of the deposit circled on the map. PROJECT BACKGROUND Geology The Bingham Canyon deposit is a large porphyry Cu-Mo-Au deposit with associated skarn and base-metal replacement deposits mined in an open-pit mine measuring about 2.5 miles across and 4,000 feet deep. The deposit is hosted by the Bingham Stock, a Late Eocene to Mid-Oligocene intrusive complex. The skarn is hosted by the Late Carboniferous-age Bingham Mine Formation, which is comprised of quartzites and basal limestones (Babcock Jr. et al., 1998). The Bingham Stock is a composite intrusive complex that was emplaced over a period of about two million years. The oldest phase is described as a fine-grained equigranular monzonite (MZ), which intruded the country rocks at 39.8 ± 0.4 Ma (U-Pb zircon TIMS age) (Parry et al., 2001). Subsequently, the quartz monzonite porphyry (QMP) was emplaced, followed by intrusion of a latite porphyry (LP). The final intrusive phase, which forms narrow dikes that crosscut the Bingham Stock, is represented by a quartz latite porphyry (QLP), which is dated to 37.5 ± 0.4 Ma by 40Ar/39Ar dating of sanidine (Deino and Keith, 1998). Also present, are a minette dike in contact with a QLP dike (Waite et al., 1998; Deino and Keith, 1998), and a biotite porphyry (BP), a quartz latite porphyry breccia (QLPbx), and a pebble dike (Redmond, 2002). The copper orebody is centered above the Bingham Stock and forms an inverted cup shape with three high-grade copper zones extending to depth. Molybdenite mineralization occurs within and extends below the copper orebody, but is not correlated with copper mineralization. The main sulfide assemblage is chalcopyrite, bornite, molybdenite, and pyrite. Gold is locally intergrown with chalcopyrite and bornite (Babcock Jr. et al., 1998; Phillips et al., 1998). The surrounding country rocks host skarn deposits with three main ore types - garnet skarns, massive sulfides, and iron oxides. The garnet skarns contain chalcopyrite and pyrite with magnetite veins. In the massive sulfides chalcopyrite and pyrite occur either in banded sulfides or in unconsolidated microbreccias. The iron oxides contain disseminated chalcopyrite with minor chalcocite and bornite (Harrison and Reid, 1998). The deposit is overprinted by several stages of alteration. Potassic alteration is concentrated at the center of the deposit. It is surrounded and partially overlapped by a propylitic alteration zone. Both zones are overprinted by sericitic alteration. In the northern part of the deposit evidence for argillic alteration can be found (Bowman et al., 1987). Similarly, the skarn deposit was also overprinted by several stages of alteration: wollastonite, idocrase, and garnet in cherty limestones, and quartz and diopside forming in calcareous quartzites. Distally, diopside was replaced by talc, tremolite, dolomite, secondary calcite, and pyrite, and quartz and sulfide veinlets with biotite and actinolite selvages are present. Andradite garnet, diopside, quartz, magnetite, hematite, and copper sulfides were overprinted by wollastonite (Babcock Jr. et al., 1998). Because the monzonite, quartz monzonite porphyry, latite porphyry, and quartz latite porphyry host the bulk of the mineralization, our research is focused on these lithologic units. Geometallurgy On the basis of geological (lithology, alteration assemblages, fracture density, copper mineralization) and metallurgical properties, the deposit has been divided into 33 ore domains by mine geologists and metallurgists (Figure 1). In map view, these domains cross geologically defined boundaries (MZ, QMP etc.). These domains reflect regions of the deposit that have particular, mapable attributes or properties. They reflect a combination of geological and mineralogical characteristics that combine to impact processing. Alteration, for example, as shown by talc mineralization, is one such key feature. One of the challenges in the development of mineral processing simulators is the modelling of liberation characteristics of particles produced by comminution circuits. Understanding the mineral characteristics of these particles is one of the keys to predicting their behaviour in separation circuits. While more fundamental research seeks to model the non-random breakage of ores this work examines whether we can move forward now by using observed characteristics of ores to model the composition of particles generated in comminution processes. The current work examines a range of ores and identifies which of these exhibit the pattern of similarity of composition for particles in a given size class that has been produced as the result of a variety of breakage conditions. The impact of mineralogy and texture on the evolution of liberation characteristics for both valuable and gangue minerals is discussed.

Recent research has shown that traditional sensitivity, what if and best case/worst case analysis of metallurgical data has the potential to over estimate the value of mining projects. Use of simulations, which rely on the input of statistical information, may provide more realistic predictions of the value of future projects. Actual metallurgical data is used to demonstrate that analyzing the data from a statistical perspective can give insight into completing an optimum amount of metallurgical testing and a mechanism to determine that samples used for the testing are truly representative of the ore that will be processed.

Gas outbursts occur as sudden eruptions of gas and minerals from the face of a mine heading as the heading approaches potentially burst-prone (or anomalous) zones of rock. Such outbursts have resulted in considerable damage to equipment and in some cases lives have been lost. Characterizing these anomalous zones and detecting their presence is therefore vital to safe mining. Certain significant characteristics associated with the outburst-prone zones are: (1) the presence of fluid inclusions, (2) unstable stress conditions, (3) characteristic geologic structures, (4) certain physical properties of the rock, and (5) micro-seismic activity. Geophysical and engineering methods for detecting these characterisitcs are discussed and are considered with respect to their past success and future potential for predicting gas outbursts.

An existing mining company plans to extend their surface coal mining operations in central Pennsylvania. Although the proposed site contains pyritic material, the results of the acid-base accounting for the site show an overall NP:MPA ratio of 4.26:1 for the entire site. The pyritic material is, however, associated with the lower of the three seams to? be mined. If traditional dragline mining methods were used, this would result in the acidic material being placed at the top of the spoil piles, exposing it to air and water, and therefore to the formation of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD). Further concerns are associated with the fact that the alkaline material is not distributed evenly over the mine site. In order to prevent the formation of AMD, the company has proposed to mine the area using Truck/Shovel mining methods. This technique offers a more flexible alternative for cut sequencing and for the selective placement of waste material. Working with the Department of Mineral Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, a mine plan was developed for this site. This plan results in the layering of the alkaline and acidic spoil in order to achieve an overall net alkalinity in all spoil areas. Mining of this site should therefore not result in the formation of AMD.

This paper presents the results of column flotation of a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design is used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to achieve a concentrate of high grade and recovery. A concentration of 15 ppm of non-ionic frother is found to be enough to maximize the recovery at the pH of 9.5.

[The Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corporation, a. mall company engaged in producing coal in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, is currently engaged in a struggle of destiny to increase their production from inclined seam operation to compete with highly mechanized horizontal bed mines. This paper introduces some of the problems encountered it pitch seam mining as they apply to the convention, room and pillar system employed at the present time. Further described is the test work now being conducted to overcome these obstacles with an. attendant increase in productivity. Included in this test work is a mining machine designed especially for pitching seams, an automated longwall, and hydraulic mining of the latter compared with those of conventional work presently employed.]

The effect of various flotation depressants and surface treatments on the floatability of coal derived pyrites in the presence of XIBC was investigated with a modified Hallimond tube microflotation cell. The floatability of pyrite particles which had been cleaned with hot dilute (5%) hydrochloric acid was relatively large. However, the floatability of such particles was reduced greatly by the addition of specific depressants such as calcium hydroxide and also by treating the pyrite with an aerated warm alkaline solution. Although this treatment and these depressants also had some effect on the floatability of coal particles, the effect was much less than on the pyrite particles.

Crystals of native gold occur in placer-type deposits. Gold, as a pure metal, is the most malleable metal known; therefore, delicate gold crystal forms should not survive mechanical transport and concentration processes involved in placer formation. To test the hypothesis that the crystalline gold is currently forming in place, two active gold-placer operations and an unmineralized background area in Alaska were examined. At these sites, rock outcrops, soil profiles, and native vegetation were sampled. At one sampling site, the soil was panned and yielded crystalline gold, as well as the more common rounded nuggets. The plants and soils were analyzed for their major, minor, and trace-element contents, especially gold. Two procedures, one a simple demineralized water leach and the other a partial digestion with acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide, were also used to extract gold and various anions from soils. The water-extractable gold ranged from <0.02 to 15.0 ppb Au in the extracting solution. This represents as much as a 104 enrichment in gold over average river water. This extractable gold is probably available to the native vegetation. Gold concentrations in the unashed dry plants from the two placer sites ranged between 0.4 and 106 ppb compared to a background range of <1 to <4 ppb Au. The presence of dissolved organic matter in the soils is thought to be responsible for the dissolution, transportation, and precipitation of gold in these placer soils, and this process is presently active in these soil profiles.

The authors have previously described a method of enhancing the magnetic susceptibility of pyrite by a mild alkaline oxidative pressure leach (Hall et al, 1985). This finding was successfully applied to enhance the magnetic desulfurization of an Eastern Canadian coal (Hall and Finch, 1984). This paper reports on enhancement of the magnetic susceptibilities of iron-containing sulfides (arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite and marcasite) upon similar treatment. It also explores the application of this pretreatment in the magnetic separation of fine sulfides from oxides and other sulfide minerals. In the latter case galvanic interference effects have a serious impact on the potential use of this method.

Proper illumination is critical to a miner?s ability to detect hazards in underground mines. Moving hazards are often located in the miner?s peripheral field-of-view, while slip/trip/fall hazards are often located in the forward field-of-view. The objective of the research described in this paper was to determine if light-emitting diodes (LEDs) improve visual performance as compared to traditional incandescent (INC) cap lamps. The research presented focuses on comparative studies of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) prototype LED, a commercial LED, and an INC camp lamp. Thirty subjects participated in these studies; ten subjects in each of the age groups: 18 to 25 years, 40 to 50 years, and 51+ years. Visual performance was quantified by the subjects? speed and accuracy in detecting hazards, while visual performance for disability glare was quantified by the use of contrast sensitivity tests. Results suggest that LEDs with a visible spectrum containing a higher concentration of the shorter wavelengths can enable visual performance improvements with respect to disability glare, the detection of moving hazards in the peripheral field-of-view, and the detection of floor hazards in the forward field-of-view. The NIOSH prototype LED cap lamp provided the best visual performance improvements for the older age groups in every test. Hecla Limited, Magee Scientific and the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) combined efforts to evaluate an in situ air filtration system for use in an underground mine environment. The purpose of the collaboration was to determine the efficacy of such a technology for reducing the concentration of airborne diesel particulate matter (DPM), with the aim of improving air quality in underground hardrock mines. A secondary goal was to evaluate the use of an aethalometer as a means of real-time measurement of black carbon as a surrogate for DPM. The evaluation included measuring the DPM-capture efficiency of the filter when it was preloaded with dust. Toward this end, rock dust was introduced at the filter inlet to create a dust layer on the filter surface, with the intent of providing improved capture of the much smaller DPM particles. The filtration efficiency for DPM was assessed by comparing measurements of DPM taken at the inlet and outlet of the system, using both realtime and time-weighted-average approaches. The real-time measurements were performed with a Model AE33 aethalometer, and filter samples analyzed by the NIOSH 5040 method were used to assess the effects of the system on time-weighted-average concentrations of total carbon. Results showed a reduction in DPM concentrations in the range of 82 to 89 percent. While the calculated efficiencies based on the two different measurement methods were similar, the DPM levels reported by the aethalometer were higher, possibly due to differences in the performance of the size selectors used for the two methods: impactors versus cyclones. More research is required to develop a robust correlation between the two methods to support the use of the aethalometer in future mining applications. The advantages of the aethalometer are that it can measure and record DPM levels for weeks at a time and can be directly connected to a mine monitoring system, potentially at multiple locations. Ideally, such data can be used to initiate the startup of the filtration system should DPM concentrations reach an action level. This work demonstrated that in situ filtration systems, modified to collect DPM and coupled with real-time monitoring, show promise in reducing DPM concentrations in the mine environment.

"In June or July 2005, the European Commission will present its Thematic Strategy on the Sustainable Use of Natural Resources proposal to the Council and European Parliament, one of the seven Thematic Strategies to be developed and implemented under the 6th European Environment Action Programme in support of the European Union’s Sustainable Development Strategy defined by the European Union’s Head of State at the Göteborg European Council, in June 2001. The time scale for this Thematic Strategy is 25 years (2005-2030). This paper discusses some of the key issues related to the EU minerals and metals industry that needs to be addressed by the Strategy. These are: - the need for access to mineral reserves in the EU and abroad; - the need to strenghten the capacity of developing countries to sustainably promote and regulate the use of their mineral potential; - the need for an EU mineral resources intelligence capacity. There are additional important needs, which are not discussed in this paper, such as: - the need to foster further innovation in mining, ore beneficiation and metallurgical technologies; - the need to integrate and simplify the exisitng complex regulatory framework applicable to the EU mining industry and to effectively implement existing legislation."
