Simulator technology has advanced to the point where the cost of mining equipment simulators is beginning to make commercial sense. Simulator-based evaluation allows operators or potential employees to be assessed in a pseudo-real environment under surface and underground mining conditions. Simulator training also allows operators to be exposed to emergency and advanced situations such as brake or steering failure or a tireblowout. ThoroughTec, of South Africa, provides simulator equipment to the mining industry. The company’s various packages of simulator products provide an unbiased evaluation score that removes human error from the assessment process. This same evaluation score is also presented at the end of normal training or refresher training sessions. In this way, the simulator helps eliminate bad habits and improve efficiencies.

Theoretical and analytical analyses of three mitigative measures- plane fitting method, trenching, and tension cable led to the development of a total protection plan to eliminate or reduce damages to the residential structures subjected to surface movements caused by underground longwall mining. The protection plan was applied to twelve residential houses and two external garages. The success rate is overwhelming. This paper describes the methods employed for protection and results of those case studies.

The Samira Hill gold mine represents the first commercial gold project for the landlocked country of Niger in West Africa. It began production in October 2004 as the result of over 10 years of exploration and development work. There were several administrative, social and technical challenges that had to be overcome to realize the successful development of the project. The Samira mine is located on the geological structure known as the ‘Samira Horizon’ which is developing as a promising district for additional discoveries and other mine developments.

As most mining companies are taking advantage of the high market prices for base metals such as steel, copper and zinc, numerous challenges still face them. While demand is strong from countries like China and the United States, demand is still mixed in Europe. This leads to the question of how long these high prices and overall high global demand will last. The tremendous market prices of most precious and base metals have enabled many companies to pay down a significant amount of debt accrued during acquisition and capital expenditure phases. Additionally, mining companies have been able to internally fund and engage in large projects to address future growth, (Less, 2006), thus maximizing the performance of the existing asset base, driving maintenance costs down, and improving and empowering the work-force (Mining Journal, 2006). Market prices and general efficiency gains have addressed these issues to some extent. However, critical issues still face operating managers in the mineral pro-cessing side of the industry. Energy prices, for example, continue to have a negative impact on cash costs for producing an ounce of gold or ton of a given base metal (Cummins, 2003).

Coal that meets customer specifications is often stored in silos before being loaded into cars. It is often found that coal in a particular car does not meet customer specifications due to the mixing of coal inside the silo. Some new contracts require meeting specifications on a per car basis. Silo flow models are used to predict quality in such cases. However, coming up with an accurate silo flow model for each case is very difficult and time consuming. This paper examines the viability of using an online analyzer at the loading end of the silo in conjunction with a feedback circuit, to optimize the quality of the coal being loaded into trains, so that each car meets quality specifications.

With the exception of the development of large scale mining equipment (haul trucks, draglines, shovels, etc.), there are likely few other candidates responsible for the ability to exploit large tonnage, low grade deposits, than the development of large capacity comminution equipment and circuits; crushers and grinding mills. Ball mills are often the final step in the comminution process and are responsible for providing what should be the optimum particle size distribution of ore to subsequent mineral concentration steps in the flowsheet. Because comminution processes are such high cost centers for milling operations, both capital and operating costs, an enormous amount of research has been conducted to study and model their performance, in order to improve efficiencies (Kelsall, et al., 1969; Austin et al., 1984; Napier-Munn, et al., 1999; Powell and Smit, 2001). With respect to modeling ball mills, estimates of the breakage rates for individual size classes of ore particles are fundamental, as are the particle size class breakage functions (the progeny of particle sizes produced from breaking a coarser particle size class), also termed appearance functions. Fundamental research into particle breakage in tumbling mills focuses on how much energy is input into single particles versus how they break and what size distribution of particles results. Several test methods, including JKMRC?s well known dual pendulum test and drop weight test, have been developed for the breakage of coarse particles down to 6 mm in size (Napier-Munn, et al., 1999). Work on the breakage of finer particles is still an area of intense research and single particle breakage is being investigated as are multiple particle, fixed bed methods (Hoffler and Herbst, 1990; Bourgeois et al., 1992; Whiten, 2007).

The Bureau of Mines has studied the problem of cracking in residential structure walls from vibrations produced by blasting in surface mines. Direct observations were made of blasting damage consisting primarily of cosmetic cracking in plaster and gypsum board walls. Measurements of structure response and also application of the response spectra analysis single-degree-of-freedom model were used to quantify the frequency dependence of the safe level criteria. An overall summary analysis was performed using the new Bureau of Mines damage observations and data obtained from nine previous studies, including the three analyzed earlier by the BuMines for Bulletin 656, published in 1971. Separate analysis of the high- and low-frequency damage cases, structural response, and two types of construction resulted in the establishment of safe vibration levels ranging from 12 mm/sec to 50 mm/sec (0.5 in/sec to 2.0 in/sec).

The Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) is to be constructed at the defunct Homestake Mine, in South Dakota. As a cornerstone of DUSEL?s research program, it is intended to conduct experiments into the fundamental nature of neutrino and proton particles. The experimental apparatus required to con-duct these experiments will be housed in large rock cavern(s) sited at depths of over a kilometer. As conceived, these cavern(s) are planned to have mined volumes of up to half a million cubic meters, and spans of approximately 50 meters. The paper will describe key end-user requirements, and outline the in situ rock conditions and mine site constraints that are likely to play determinant roles in identifying candidate sites and developing cost-effective design options(s).

The Duval Corporation porphyry copper deposits at Copper Canyon and Copper Basin, though widely separated, form an economic unit requiring integrated exploitation. Contrasts in mineralization, host rocks, and mode of occurrence present unique mining and milling problems. Mixed oxide-sulfide ore is treated in extensive dump leaching facilities in both areas. Complex copper-gold-silver ore is treated in a 4,000 tpd mill at Copper Canyon. In both areas, hypogene metallization occurs within large aureoles of metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration related to quartz monzonite intrusions of mid-Tertiary age. Supergene processes further altered the rocks and enriched the hypogene protore. At Copper Canyon, hypogene copper and iron sulfides with gold and silver occur in fractures, as partial replacement of favorable beds, and as disseminations in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The lower part of the Pennsylvanian Battle Formation was a particularly favorable host. Metallization occurs to a lesser extent in quartz monzonite. Metal zoning is well developed. The deposits at Copper Basin consist principally of supergene copper minerals in arenites of the Cambrian Harmony Formation. Oxidation of hypogene copper and iron sulfides in tactite zones has formed at least two commercial deposits; intersections of fractures with favorable beds exerted important ore controls.

More than 95 percent of the barite mined today is used by the petroleum industry as driller’s mud. The rest is used in the industrial market and the medical field. Most of the barite mined in the United States is in Nevada. This year, mining activity has increased due to an increase in oil exploration/development. This was caused by an increase in the crude oil prices.

Dimension stone is a natural stone (granite, marble, limestone, sandstone and slate) that can be quarried, cut and shaped to conform to acceptable industry standards for size, consistency and durability. There are numerous outlets for the finished product in exterior and interior architectural and design applications. A continued growth market is with residential usage— particularly in new, upscale construction. This has become a competitive market between domestic producers and lower cost imported products. These imported products have become available at many of the building supply retail outlets and have increased the use of stone in residential construction and renovation. The traditional architectural application of dimension stone is tied to commercial and institutional building construction trends and market. There has been a noticeable increased usage of stone in the Sun Belt. This stone is usually supplied by local fabricating shops. It is used in the exterior and interior of shopping malls. This market generally uses local stone sources. It has increased the demand for sandstone, limestone and quartzite in this region of the country.

Underground mining of coal by longwall mining methods has not been a predominant technique in Ohio. To date, only five mines in the state utilize this method, however, the technique has sparked a certain amount of controversy. As a mining technique, longwalling was introduced into southeastern Ohio in the early 1970's but it did not attract public attention until the mines began moving into privately held surface lands. This occurred coincidentally at about the same time that the state of Ohio began to regulate the environmental impacts of underground mining. Prior to the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act in 1977, (SMCRA), Ohio's reclamation law, Chapter 1513 Ohio Revised Code (O.R.C. 1513) did not regulate underground coal mines. As a result of SMCRA, the Ohio Statute was amended in 1978, to include regulation of the surface effects of subsidence. The inevitable result was that existing mines were immediately subject to regulations that were not considered during the initial mine planning process. (For an excellent survey of Ohio Laws that deal with coal mine subsidence, see Zima, 1985. ) The problem faced at that time by both the coal industry and the Ohio Division of Reclamation (the agency within ODNR charged with implementing O.R.C. Ch. 1513.1, was that of attempting to superimpose permitting requirements, and design performance standards onto mines that' had been operational for a number of years.

Perlite is a generic term for naturally occurring siliceous rock. It is a form of natural volcanic glass the main constituent of which is amorphous silica (70-76%). Perlite, when heated rapidly to its softening temperature range, expands from four to twenty times its original volume, due to the presence of 2-6% ?combined? water, in a manner similar to popcorn as the H2O molecules vaporize and create countless tiny bubbles, which account for its exceptional physical properties: light weight (30-150 kg/m3), low thermal conductivity, cellular structure, in general. These properties make perlite adaptable for numerous end-uses, which can be distinguished into 2 categories: Expanded perlite applications in: a) Construction Materials market (e.g. Acoustical Tiles, light-weight insulating Mortars, self-levelling Concrete), b) Agriculture (e.g. Hydroponics), c) Food and Chemical industry (e.g. Filtration Media, Filler, etc.), d) Insulation and Heat resistance technology (e.g. Cryogenic vessels, Refractory Bricks, etc.). Unexpanded Graded perlite applications in: a) Phosphoric Fertilizers industry (additive in H3PO4 production), b) Foundry technology (slag-aid, insulating and heat resistance agent).

This paper presents an evaluation of tailings dam incidents from the 1994 USCOLD Tailings Dam Committee report. Comparisons are also made with water storage dam incidents from USCOLD reports and recent tailings dam incidents. The evaluation results show that tailings dam incidents are due to a number of factors including overtopping, static and seismic instability, seepage and internal erosion, and foundation conditions, and that no particular type of tailings dam or operational condition is more susceptible to incidents. In addition, the results confirm that tailings dams should be located, designed, operated, and reclaimed with a thorough knowledge of site conditions, mill operation, site monitoring, and tailings characteristics.

Introduction The domestic copper industry has suffered for some time from declining ore grades; rising costs associated with conventional mining, milling, smelting and refining; tightening environmental restrictions; and shrinking markets due to materials substitution. Ore grade depletion is a major problem. It is illustrated by the decline in average copper yield shown in Fig. 1. From 1979, copper grade has dropped 60%, lowering yields from 1.2% to 0.49% (Sousa, 1981). The US copper industry is taking drastic measures to enhance its competitive posture and to guarantee its future worldwide position. In a sense, this involves a general restructuring of the processing philosophy of US copper producers. Judging from recent trends, this restructuring relates to the application of solution mining techniques to the treatment of copper ores and low grade waste material. Recovering copper by leaching techniques has been practiced for centuries. As early as the mid-16th century, some Hungarian copper mines were recycling copper bearing leach solutions through waste heaps (Nash, 1912). In the US, recovering copper from dilute mine waters has been carried out for more than 100 years. There are, however, certain technical innovations that have elevated the importance of solution mining as a process for copper recovery. These include: • Advances in solvent extract-electrowinning (SX-EW); • Developments in acid and acid ferric cure processes for oxide and mixed oxide sulfide ores; • Improvements in heap and dump construction; and • Advances in in situ leaching technology. Generally, solution mining enjoys certain intrinsic advantages over conventional mining and milling. Compared to conventional milling, the combined capital and operating costs of leaching facilities are normally lower, start-up times are faster, and the leaching operation usually has less impact on the environment. Furthermore, solution mining represents an expedient way of extracting metals from small shallow deposits, and is particularly suited to the treatment of low grade sources. And, in the case of waste dump leaching, there is a tremendous resource in-place that has the mining cost already off the books. This paper updates current US copper solution mining trends. Solution mining systems Schlitt (1980) summarized the characteristics of the principle leach systems in the US. He pointed out that the wide variations in copper deposits make solution mining a more site-specific activity than conventional mining and milling. Heap leaching is usually selected for moderate to high grade ores having a copper mineralization that is amenable to acid leaching (oxides, silicates and certain sulfides). Higher grade ores mined specifically for heap leaching are usually treated to optimize copper extraction, therefore, crushing and some pretreatment (acid curing) may be justified. On the other hand, dump leaching practice usually involves leaching low grade waste rock placed on large dumps as dictated by topography and haulage costs. Mine waste is therefore treated in an uncrushed run-of-mine condition. Finally, in situ leaching is appropriate for either very deep ore bodies or for recovering copper from low grade rock left behind in abandoned pit walls, stopes, and subsidence zones from earlier mining activities. True in-situ solution mining should be defined as the leaching of ore in its original geologic setting. Heap leaching Heap leaching has a long history as a hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery. The methodology of heap leaching established at Rio Tinto in Spain more than 300 years ago is basically the same as that used today. What exactly does clean coal mean? Mining coal creates dust and releases methane gas. And burning coal liberates CO2 and emits particulates, including SO2 and NOx. Coal creates wastes that are often stored in unsightly and potentially dangerous slag heaps and lagoons. When clean coal technology is discussed, it sometimes seems that creating modern or ?ultra super critical? coal-fired power stations is presented as the main or even the only answer. However, there may be a more holistic approach. Using the energy potential of coal is always going to have environmental impacts. Some of these will be negative. But the need to secure future energy resources demands that society tackle these negative issues and find ways to minimize and offset them.

The Ore Mountains in Germany have a history of more than 850 years of underground mining activity. This has created a situation where thousands of old mine shafts and adits are due for rehabilitation. While no long-term stable rehabilitation was executed in previous centuries, those abandoned mine sites which date back to the uranium mining boom from 1945 to 1962 were rehabilitated immediately after mine closure according to state-of-the art technology. Over the years, however, it has become obvious that most of these sites are not long-term stable and thus it has become necessary to rehabilitate them a second time. Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg is carrying out a research project on the optimization of this process. 70 mine site rehabilitation projects, the technology and the materials used have been assessed. A technical guideline for future rehabilitation projects, based on the outcomes of this assessment, is under development with the goal to make it easier, faster and more economical to select and apply suitable designs and construction materials for dams, plugs and other rehabilitation structures in former uranium mines.

A clay binding agent has been investigated to enhance flotation recovery of bitumen from Canadian high fines oil sand in the Clark Hot Water Extraction (CHWE) process. Selective adsorption on fine particles and subsequent agglomeration are critical for the success of clay binder enhanced oil sand flotation. A number of flotation tests have been performed at different reagent dosages under different operating conditions such as pulp pH to evaluate the reagent performance. Dissipative Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM-D) analyses of clay binder adsorption on quartz were carried out to better understand process mechanisms. It has been found that use of clay binder in flotation resulted in an absolute bitumen recovery increase of 18%, 25%, and 11% for the high-, medium-, and low-grade oil sand samples, respectively. The QCM-D analyses have revealed that the clay binder was strongly adsorbed on the SiO2 surface.

The Golden Grove Project area is located 220 km (137 miles) east of Geraldton in Western Australia (Fig. 1). The project is a joint venture involving Amax Exploration (Australia) Inc. (Amax), Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. (EZ), and Esso Exploration & Production Australia Inc. (Esso), each with 31 116% interest, and Aztec Exploration Pty., Ltd. (Aztec), with a 3 1/2% carried and a 3% contributing interest. The venture covers two significant volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits and some 40 km (25 miles) of highly prospective Archean volcanics. During the course of the past 12 years (to 1983), all four companies were responsible for operating the project at one time or another and all influenced the discoveries. The Gossan Hill and Scuddles deposits are typical examples of volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits associated with Archean explosive submarine acid to intermediate volcanic complexes. They are located in the northwesterly trending Yalgoo greenstone belt of the West Australian Archean Shield. Gossan Hill, located in 1972, is essentially a copper deposit with minor zinc lenses; to date, 97 diamond holes have delineated a geological resource* estimated to contain 13 Mt (14.3 million st) of of 3.4% Cu and 13 g/t (0.38 oz per ton) Ag in the main lenses with minor lenses totaling 2 Mt (2.2 million st) of 3.7% Cu and 17 g/t (0.49 oz per ton) Ag and 1.7 Mt (1.9 million st) grading 1.5% Pb, 14% Zn, and 87 g/t (2.8 oz per ton) Ag. Scuddles is a zinc-copper deposit with gold and silver credits. It *Resource estimate provided by Esso for inclusion in Aztec Exploration Pty. Ltd. 1982 Annual Report was discovered in 1979 and, to the end of 198 1, had been delineated with 42 diamond holes. On the basis of this drilling, a geological resource* of 26 Mt (28.7 million st) has been estimated in three coalescing lenses. The lenses comprise 7.5 Mt (8.3 million st) of 2.1 % Cu, 12 g/t (0.35 oz per ton) Ag, and 0.3 g/t (0.009 oz per ton) Au; 7.6 Mt (8.4 million st) of 0.4% Cu, 9.9% Zn, 73 g/t (2.3 oz per ton) Ag, and 0.7 g/t (0.02 oz per ton) Au; and 1 1.0 Mt (1 2.1 mil lion st) of 1.1 % Cu, 9.3% Zn, 8 1 g/t (2.6 oz per ton) Ag, and 1.5 g/t (0.044 oz per ton) Au. Cleveland-Cliffs’ Northshore Mining Company operates a magnetic iron ore (taconite) concentrator and pelletizer in Silver Bay, MN. These are two recent cost reduction projects: 1. Rougher Magnetic Separators were upgraded throughout the concentrator; throughput and recovery were simultaneously improved. 2. Green Ball Roll Screens on one agglomeration circuit were upgraded from 3.5-inch to 2.5-inch rolls. Throughput improved by 24% from 62 to 77 LTPH. Green ball size distribution improved as an added benefit.
