Over the last few years Lonmin Platinum and Sandvik have embarked on a unique partnership of collaboration through a systematic approach to developing equipment to mechanize and automate narrow reef platinum mining. After the initial design and manufacture of the equipment the key aspect is the integrating equipment, people and method into a mining system. Another key a spec of mechanization is the optimization of equipment utilization and this philosophy has ensured continual evolvement of mining methods. This paper describes the trials and development that have resulted in the mining method described as Lonmin mechanized breast.

In recent years, the amount of ferritic stainless steel production has increased. However, the rust formation by the salt spray test was pointed out in the past. At the centre of the circular rust zone, pitting corrosion where water-soluble nonmetallic inclusions were embedded was observed. These inclusions originated from the suspended refining slag and consisted of multi-phase oxides and sulphides. By the experiments and thermodynamic consideration of the water-solubility, not only CaO or CaS, but also lime rich calcium-aluminates or calcium-silicates have shown large water-solubility. The composition of oxide phase in the inclusions was almost the same among the samples from molten steel, slab, or cold rolled sheet. On the contrary, CaS was clearly observed around the oxide in the sample of cold rolled sheet, although it was not found in the molten steel or slab samples. The enrichment of sulphur occurred from the desulphurization reaction of the suspended slag particles in the molten steel and also occurred from the diffusion of sulphur to the oxide inclusions during the heating of the slab. The optimization of refining slag composition has lead to produce the ferritic stainless steel without rust formation. In the synopsis, the author concludes that ?high levels of seismicity do not coincide with high rockburst rates?. Implicit to an appreciation of this statement is the necessity of a common understanding of what is understood by the terms: ?high level of seismicity? and ?high rockburst rates?. With respect to the former term there is no difficulty in that the level of seismicity is traditionally measured in terms of the Richter Scale. The latter term however presents a problem in that the author defines it as a particular sort of seismic event?viz: ?Rockburst? is understood as a seismic event that causes damage to an underground excavation with subsequent injury, loss of material/equipment or production shifts? (p. 322). No scale is given of the amount of: ?excavation damage ?level of injury ?material/equipment loss ?production shifts lost whether separate or cumulative, for a particular seismic event to be classified as a rockburst. A further difficulty arises in that in common usage the words ?rockburst?, ?seismic event? and ?earthquake? are all used to describe the same event.

A risk study was carried out at the Cerrejon coal mine in order to assess the impacts of pit slope failure in terms of safety of personnel and destruction of equipment with economic consequences. Results of the assessment enabled the definition of risk treatment requirements and the identification of key aspects to consider in a risk treatment plan. The approach included the following tasks: (1) Assessment of the total probability of failure (POF) representative of the stability conditions of typical footwall and highwall slopes. For this purpose, stability analyses were carried out to define the Design POF, which accounts for the variability of strength parameters and represents the normal conditions considered for slope design. Strength parameters for highwall slope analysis were derived from borehole data obtained with a geotechnical drilling campaign. The Total POF was estimated through the use of Source Response Diagrams (SRD) in order to incorporate other sources of uncertainty not accounted for, like changes in geometry, variability of rock conditions due to geological or operational factors, changes in groundwater conditions and occurrence of seismic events. (2) Assessment of the consequences of footwall and highwall slope failure on safety of personnel. The assessment was performed through the use of event tree analysis to establish the probability of fatality caused by slope failures, from the Total POF defined in the previous task. This analysis required the evaluation of personal exposure to slope failures. Also, the assessment included benchmarking of acceptability criteria in terms of probability of fatality and the evaluation of options of risk mitigation to comply with these criteria. (3) Assessment of the consequences of footwall and highwall slope failure in terms of economic losses associated with impact on equipment. The analysis included the evaluation of equipment exposure to slope failures, and it was performed through event tree analysis to establish the probability of an economic loss associated to total or partial lost of equipment, from the total POF value defined in the first task. The magnitude of the economic losses was estimated from the costs of damaged equipment, lost production and site restoration. Options of risk mitigation were also examined in terms of economic losses. The risk assessment process applied to the Cerrejón mine showed how the system can be applied to evaluate the consequences of failure in terms of personnel safety and economics and to identify the more adequate risk mitigation options. The system can be an extremely powerful tool in the mine design process and provides the opportunity to rationalize the geotechnical information requirements, once the risk criteria have been defined by management. The main purpose of this paper is to present the process; therefore, the emphasis has been put on the methodology followed rather than on the actual results obtained.

A typical sub-level block cave mining extraction method employs an undercut level to establish a cavity in hard rock, and as such requires special support methods and products to be installed during the development phase. The undercut level development in the block cave orebody is then sacrificial, and support elements will eventually report to the crusher and perhaps conveyor belt systems for transportation to surface. The choice of support products installed in the undercut level development should take cognizance of the detrimental effect these could have on the mining system such as cutting of conveyor belts, obstructing crushers, safety aspects, and productivity. This work explores the probability and practicality of making use of new-generation support products to make the operation safer as well as enhance productivity in the development phase and during the undercut operation. This paper will investigate the use of glass reinforced plastic(GRP) rockbolts and GRP mesh instead of conventional steel bolts and mesh along with resin capsule-filled holes with the GRP bolts. Complementing this with thin spray liner (TSL) application as another means of creating a safer operating environment, as well as a productive support medium, will also be addressed. These proposed items are envisaged to reduce production downtime and improve the safety of our people. These items are all easy and light to handle, cuttable and crusher friendly, as they will break up during the crushing process.

The introduction of extra low profile (XLP) mechanized equipment within Anglo Platinum is aligned with the overall New Mining Technologies strategy to focus on continuing modernization of our mining operations` incorporating injury-free production and cost-effective mining technologies. The method allows for the introduction of a suite of ultra-low profile equipment in narrow reef (1.2 m) stoping operations. For the first time it is now possible to achieve total trackless mechanization at these widths and indications are that XLP mining has the potential to add more value when benchmarked with conventional mining and low profile (1.8 m) room and pillar methods. Various mine layouts were tested at different sites within Anglo Platinum and the XLP breast mining layout proved to be the most effective. This paper describes the results of the trials at Waterval Shaft and concludes with recommendations on our future strategy on implementation of XLP technology within Anglo Platinum.

Energy efficiency is a cost-effective way of both bolstering energy security and limiting the harmful effects of energy use on the environment. Mining is an inherently energy-intensive activity, and the 2008 revision of South Africa’s National Energy Efficiency Strategy (NEES) set a target of a 10% reduction in energy consumption by 2015 for the mining sector. In this study, we investigate the effectiveness of the NEES in improving energy efficiency in the South African coal mining sector by surveying energy intensity at a number of operations, and analysing energy efficiency trends and energy use by process and energy carrier at an underground coal mine in Mpumalanga. Most mines surveyed exhibit an increase in energy intensity over time. At the case study mine, the increase was primarily due to increased energy use in the beneficiation and discard reclaiming processes. Trends in energy consumption are a poor reflection of trends in energy intensity, as a decline in energy consumption is most easily achieved by reducing production. A more appropriate metric for energy efficiency at coal mines is energy intensity, defined as energy use per unit of saleable product, relative to a multi-year baseline. The evidence suggests that the NEES has been ineffective in promoting energy efficiency in South African coal mines. We propose that greater success could be achieved by monitoring and reporting on energy intensity at the process level, and by incentivizing energy efficiency gains.

One of the valuation approaches applied to Advanced Exploration Areas and Pre-Development Projects is the so-called ?in situ Mineralization Method? or the ?Yardstick Method?. This method is based on the concept of a known undeveloped Mineral Resource being worth a certain fraction (the ?Yardstick?) of the contained commodity value (?metal in ground?), using commodity prices ruling at the date of valuation. The Yardstick value is derived usually from an average market-based figure obtained from an analysis of recent transactions and is expressed as a monetary value per ounce or per tonne. It maybe modified to accommodate the quality (e.g. grade) and category (e.g. confidence level) of the Mineral Resource/Reserve involved and the time, effort and expenditure expected to be involved in bringing the project to fruition. Some eighteen recent and relevant transactions were analysed, allowing the following general conclusions to be reached: ? a Yardstick with which to value undeveloped PGE mineral resources is likely to range between 0.5% and 2.5% of the in-ground contained metal value ? the expected method of mining (especially with regard to mining costs) and the grade of the mineralization both have a strong influence on the Yardstick ? the status (classification) of the Mineral Resource has some influence on the Yardstick and ? the ruling price of platinum and the regional location of the deposit appear to have insignificant influences on the Yardstick.

All large-scale applications of conditional simulations intend to benefit from the ‘correct’ (or’ accurate’) characterization of uncertainty, adequately describing the variability observed from the data and its impact on the final objective. This paper discusses a number of relevant issues that highlight the extent to which, in reality, a model of uncertainty is dependent on the random function model chosen. Often in the presence of large number of conditioning data most available random function models will provide similar models of uncertainty. When conditioning is scarce, the resulting models of uncertainty will vary more widely, since the final output will depend mostly on the underlying assumptions of the model chosen. The application described in this paper is taken from a large porphyry Cu operation in northern Chile, and it demonstrates the impact of several variables on the resulting models of uncertainty. In particular, some of the decisions involved include the number of conditioning data and the underlying Random Function model used (Gaussian or indicator-based). Also, implementation-specific parameters must be decided upon, such as grid size used, random number generator, simple or ordinary kriging, multiple-grid simulation, and simulation of irregular three-dimensional bodies (as opposed to regular grids). Some practical guidelines are proposed to deal with these decisions.

The production of sulphuric acid from sulphur generates heat. The majority of this heat is recovered as steam and is often used to generate electricity. Heat not recovered as steam is rejected to cooling water systems. The design of the turbine, condenser, and cooling water systems impacts the overall water, energy, and environmental footprint of the plant. This review considers a conceptual 2000 t/d sulphuric acid plant with several alternative cooling water systems. The review utilizes Hatch?s 4 Quadrant sustainable design tool to compare the alternatives on both an economic and a weighted sustainability scale.

With the end of the official apartheid legislation in the early 1990s, South Africa was heralded as a non-racial country. However, racial awareness has been reintroduced into the country with the Affirmative Action and Black Economic Empowerment legislation. Gender and racial transformation are the current order of the day. All organizations are required to reflect in their make-up the demographics of the population as soon as possible. Scorecard shave been drawn up to measure the rate of transformation for gender and race in organizations. The mining industry in South Africa has been in the forefront of this transformation legislation and scorecards. This paper seeks to show the effect of gender and racial transformation on mining engineering education and professionalism by analysing the changing demographics of graduating mining students at both the South African universities offering a degree in mining engineering, the professional registration of mining engineers with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), and the membership of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), the vocational institute for mining engineers. It also demonstrates the absurdity of gender and racial quotas based solely on the demographics of the current population of the country. This paper shows the degree to which mining engineering has transformed in both gender and race.

The objective of this work is to quantify the effect of the rock mass surrounding a stope or a tunnel on the seismic signal so that the rockburst damage on the excavation can be derived. It has been shown that the transfer function of rock mass surrounding an excavation can be modelled using a damped oscillator. The method of estimating the transfer function is extended in this paper. The parameters of a damped oscillator are estimated using inversion techniques and the transfer function is modelled as a time-varying system. The technique is tested on data acquired at three different sites in two deep gold mines. Employment of a modal model of the transfer function was suitable in two cases. Application of this technique is essential to track the time variation of the natural frequency during ground motion caused by a seismic event.

The selection of stripping dragline is a complicated problem. Several factors, such as the deposit buried conditions, the demand of mine production rate, cast blasting result, the mining/stripping operation method and parameters, etc. may comprehensively influence the optimal selection of technical specifications of the dragline. Under these circumstances, the basic thinking and procedures for dragline selection are put forward as follows. •Step 1—Initially estimate the dragline annual stripping rate and stripping bench height according to the annual coal production rate and advancing speed of mining front. Then the feasible alternatives of dragline sizes can be calculated and selected from the existing dragline series. •Step 2—A computer simulation model is developed to simulate the dragline stripping operation, to obtain a series of working face parameters, then to select the best dragline alternative. This step can be interactively iterated until the satisfactory results are obtained. •Step 3— Sensitivity analysis can be done with the systems simulation model by changing the stripping bench parameters, e.g. stripping bench height and cut width, etc. to verify and modify the selection results if necessary. The mathematical model for dragline stripping simulation has been set up. The flowchart of the model is shown. A case study for a large surface coal mine with annual production rate of 16 Mt/a is followed. The dragline bucket capacity and operation radius, stripping bench height and cut width as well as other parameters are comprehensively optimized and selected. This paper describes a simple finite element (FE) modelling approach which leads to the computation of seismic energy release rate (ERR) and strain energy storage rate (ESR) which result from mining. The concept of critical strain energy is introduced as a means to help evaluate the strainburst potential in mine structures. A new, energy-based, burst potential index (BPI) is proposed. The use of ERR, ESR and BPI is demonstrated by a cut-and-fill stope case study. The merits of using such energy parameters in the interpretation and analysis of strainburst phenomena are discussed. While the study gives promising results, site-specific back analyses would be required to first calibrate the model and fit it with the local mine conditions, before it can be adopted as a routine design tool.

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that active seismic measurements could have an impact in helping solve rock engineering problems experienced in the South African mining industry. The paper presents a variety of experimental and numerical results where seismic waves show clear differences in wave-speed and amplitudes due to different degrees of fracturing. It presents results from the ?Omnibus? project commissioned to develop new ultrasonic technologies for diagnosing fracturing for nuclear waste repositories. This included using models to investigate assemblies of cracks where the effects of crack density and crack size on waveforms are shown to be coupled. Results indicate that these effects can be decoupled in the frequency domain, where the Fourier amplitude aids in estimating crack size, while the low frequency phase-difference has a direct relationship to crack density. Models are also shown to aid interpretation of waveforms by isolating geometric effects from the effects due to cracks. Two rock engineering problems experienced in the South African mining industry are investigated through numerical examples. These demonstrate that determining whether ?crush? pillars have failed and determining the degree of fracturing in the hangingwall of stopes, may be possible through the use of active seismic surveys.

Selective leaching of phases in charge chrome is used in a variety of industrial processes for the production of chromium chemicals. A mineralogical study was made of a range of local charge chrome samples, at various stages of leaching in sulphuric acid (20g/l at 90°C), using mainly a scanning electron microscope (SEM) together with an energy-dispersive spectroscopy analyzer (EDS), and X-ray diffraction techniques. It was found that the leaching behaviour of the different types of charge chrome depends largely on the nature of the secondary phases, which in turn depends upon whether the silicon content is above or below 4 per cent by mass. The leaching behaviour of high-chromium ferrite is anomalous, and it is postulated that the process is analogous to the corrosion of brass by dezincification. The purpose of the investigation was to assess various options for increasing the efficiency of the conveyor belt transporting system used at 4 Belt Shaft at Lonmin?s Marikana operations. The reason for the investigation was to prevent the occurrence of a ?bottleneck? at the main ore passes delivering ore to the conveyor belt system, thus creating more fluent operational conditions. The options assessed for increasing the efficiency of the conveyor belt transporting system were: ?Variation of the conveyor speed ?Concurrent tipping from two ore passes on the belt ?Increase the available drive unit power ?Increasing the feed rate from vibratory feeders ?Change in belt width/belt specifications The report shows that the most preferable option to the current situation at 4 Belt, Lonmin, would be the option of concurrent tipping from two ore passes to the belt.

Decision-making regarding plant-scale reagent dosage regimes and air rates is a topic of ongoing investigation and high importance. The current work explains some techniques that have proven useful in deciding on plant-scale flotation operating regimes. Specific focus has been placed on the reagents: frother and depressant, as well as some discussion around the control of air rate and froth depth. Air rate has been selected based on its effects on the froth phase. Froth velocity and froth height above the cell lip are the two variables measured and used to select the operating air rate. Pulp level is then adjusted to increase or decrease mass pull. A technique has been developed using the Anglo Platinum Bubble Sizer on an industrial flotation cell to determine the relationship between bubble size and frother concentration. This technique has been extended to measure the equivalent frother concentration or frothabilities of various streams on a rougher bank. A mass balance for frother was performed successfully, and this provided a better understanding of the way frother moved in the rougher bank. With this knowledge, more informed decisions can be made about frother addition required in subsequent flotation stages. For depressant, a new protocol for deciding on dosage rate has been developed. The depressant dosage should be based on the amount of fresh feed material reporting to a bank. Currently 400 g per ton of fresh feed has been assumed a reasonable starting point, with promising results. Improved froth stability and grades were observed. There is scope for more accurately defining the optimal dosage rate. Importantly, the combined effect of changing the chemistry and the hydrodynamics together has been demonstrated. A significant upward shift in the grade-recovery relationship for a cleaner bank was observed.

It is an honour to be invited as a speaker to this ICCR conference and a pleasure to be with you here in South Africa. I have been asked to talk about the competitiveness of coal versus other energy alternatives. Coal supplies nearly one-quarter of the global primary energy. Its most direct competitors are gas, nuclear and renewables. Oil is predominantly for transport fuels. Fuel oil is competitive with coal when crude is below its long-run average price and has some niche opportunities. But I will confine my comments to nuclear, renewables and particularly natural gas as the most potent current competitive threat to coal. Competitiveness is more than just cost and price; there is environmental acceptability, security or reliability and increasingly image. These factors are more of a spectrum than discrete issues. Dollars and cents remain the key issue for competitiveness but one must recognize the impact of politics in sustainable development and energy security.

Palabora Mining Company operates a low grade underground copper mine situated in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. Full production was first reached in May 2005 after a successful transition from an open pit operation to an underground block cave operation. The operation faces a number of technical and operational challenges, not the least being fragmentation of a competent rock mass and external dilution. The cave is subdivided into three main sectors being the east, the west and the central sectors. Caving was initiated from the weaker central sector, which has the majority of its drawpoints located directly under the open pit bottom currently filled with about 130 million tons of waste material from the pit wall failure incurred in 2004. About 48% of the ore reserve has to be extracted from the western sector, which has a much courser fragmentation compared to the other two sectors and only 25% from the central sector with the finest fragmentation. The main constraint during the ramp-up stage has been secondary breaking of drawpoint blockages. Ground-breaking secondary breaking and cave management initiatives and practices have made it possible for Palabora to realize and sustain high production rates.
