"The extreme depths and consequent expense of drilling and sampling the gold-bearing reefs of the Witwatersrand Basin have resulted in limited data being available for estimation of grade ahead of the mining face. There is, however, a wealth of information from mined-out areas of these deposits. This estimation challenge resulted in the development of a unique method of Mineral Resource estimation.AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) utilizes a technique termed macro cokriging (MCK), which allows for the integration of the limited advanced borehole data with the large chip sample data-sets from the previously mined-out areas by adopting a Bayesian geostatistical approach. The MCK process, in short, is the estimation of mixed support size data together with the application of four-parameter distribution models.The gold value estimation for the Carbon Leader Reef (CLR) on the AGA TauTona Mine is used in this paper as a case study of the process and to demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique through production reconciliation. The current method has been proven over the last 20 years and is now an established part of the Mineral Resource evaluation process within AGA.IntroductionOwing to the extreme depths of the goldbearing reefs at the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Witwatersrand operations and the prohibitive expense and time involved in drilling boreholes to the required depth, only limited drilling and sampling data is available ahead of the mining face. Underground mining and particularly dipping narrow tabular orebodies are difficult to mechanize appropriately, given the low gold price and other external factors. Particularly in the deep level mines in South Africa, there is little choice left but to mechanize if the industry is to remain competitive and a significant global player. This paper presents a design philosophy for appropriate mechanization intended to generate solutions that can be implemented using the people currently employed in South Africa mines. The design philosophy is based on the ability of high-pressure water (hydropower technology) to deliver enhanced performance to users and on simplicity in the eyes of the user. Four examples of systems and equipment are described to illustrate the approach to Appropriate Mechanization. These include: • The Development End System, • The Monorail Raise Climber, • Automatic Pump Control Valves, and • The Energy Recovery Pump. The equipment is presented with the following critical issues foremost in mind: Safety, Working Environment, Performance, Cost effectiveness and Implementation. Although the appropriate mechanization approach is described in the context of the South African underground mining industry, much of the Appropriate Mechanization equipment has worldwide applications. The increasing transportation of solids by pipeline, in South Africa and internationally, replacing the conventional transportation methods of rail, road, and conveyors, has resulted in much research into this area of solids transportation. Pipeline wear continues to be an area of specific concern, since it constitutes a major cost during the life of a pipeline installation. Wear data from an accelerated wear test and actual pipeline tests are presented. Trends in the performance of the pipeline materials tested are discussed, and possible solutions to the problem of pipeline wear are presented.

The Phoenix Programme takes the Mining and Mineral Processing Industry into the Science Classroom In the early years of mining, methods were crude, simple, labour-intensive, and very slow. Human resourcefulness, however, created innovations (mechanization, and computerization), that resulted in faster development, greater tonnages of ore, more efficient separation, and a superior final product. This expansion occured an ever-increasing rate, and resulted in a booming mining industry and a growing economy.

The paper discusses the claim that the remains of mines in Southern Africa date from ancient times, rather than from a more modern period. The evidence indicates that these mines were excavated by Iron Age Black people, who moved into South Africa from about A.D. 100 onwards. Details are given of the finds made in 1981 in an investigation of the remains of copper mines in the Dwarsberg, which probably date from the nineteenth century.

The paper reviews the restrictions imposed by the Department of Mines (now the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs) on the surface use of ground that has been undermined at shallow depths (down to a depth of244m). The reasons for the restrictions are discussed, with special reference to the early records kept by the Department of Mines on subsidence and fracture of the surface. A discussion of the nature of the strata overlying the ore-body, and the effect of undermining, is followed by a detailed account of investigational work, particularly since 1970, on the stability of shallowly undermined ground. The significance of the data collected during the investigations is considered next, with special reference to the social and economic implications. These are so farreaching, that it is proposed that the already flexible approach of the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs in considering what structures may be built on undermined ground should become even more flexible. To this end, the appointment of a Commission is proposed to collect as much information as possible on the stability of ground undermined at shallow depth, and to revise the current overrestrictive conditions or guide lines that are in use.

This paper gives a technical review of the history, occurrence, mining, and metallurgy of iron in South Africa. The reserves of iron ore worldwide and in South Africa are reviewed, and potential new developments In the iron-and-steel industry in South Africa are examined. The paper concludes that the exploitation of lower-grade iron deposits will probably supplement the reserves of high-grade hematite ore in the distant future, and that, accepting this scenario. South Africa will be well placed to provide iron ore for its expected internal steel requirements, as well as supplying quality Iron ore for the export market.

The mining rock-mass rating (MAMA) classification system was introduced in 1974 as a development of the CSIA geomechanics classification system to cater for diverse mining situations. The fundamental difference was the recognition that in situ rock-mass ratings (AMA) had to be adjusted according to the mining environment so that the final ratings (MAMA) could be used for mine design. The adjustment parameters are weathering, mining-induced stresses, joint orientation, and blasting effects. It is also possible to use the ratings (AMA) in the determination of empirical rock-mass strength (AMS) and then in the application of the adjustments to arrive at a design rock-mass strength (DAMS). This classification system is versatile, and the rock-mass rating (AMA), the mining rock-mass rating (MAMA), and the design rock-mass strength (DAMS) provide good guidelines for the purposes of mine design. However, in some cases a more detailed investigation may be required, in which case greater attention is paid to specific parameters of the system. Narrow and weak geological features that are continuous within and beyond the stope or pillar must be identified and rated separately. The paper describes the procedure required to arrive at the ratings, and presents practical examples of the application of the system to mine design.

The issue of evaluating the economic impact of large mineral projects in developing countries was studied by the use of econometric models. The evaluating system is demonstrated by its application to an example from Namibia. Three-dimensional graphics are used to illustrate the procedures leading to an assessment of the economic effects of the mineral development. The analysis allows the assessment of the overall economic consequences of mineral developments where there is a need to incorporate in the evaluation issues that are broader in scope than the pure financial objectives. Sets of technical coefficients are exploited for the development of input-output models of the productive structure of an economy. The models are refined to incorporate country-specific behaviours. The increased flexibility of the enhanced semi-input-output model permits a more confident investigation of the economy wide effects associated with a new project in the mineral sector of a developing country. Synthetic measures of profitability at market and shadow prices are introduced, and the cost/benefit ratio is used to rank mineral projects according to their economic profitability. The cost is the capital mobilized for the development of the project and for increasing the productive capacity of the related satellite industries. The benefits are identified with the economy-wide increase in value added induced by the project. 80th costs and benefits are initially valued at market prices. Their ratio is likely to be an index of economic profitability superior to measures that concentrate exclusively on the benefit side of projects. To allow for market distortions, the concept of shadow prices is introduced, and accordingly project-related costs and benefits are re-evaluated. A new cost/benefit ratio at shadow prices is recalculated, which is more meaningful to the policy-maker than decision-making based on socio-economic issues.

"The determination of the oxidation state(s) of an element present in a solid sample may be required for a number of reasons, including the assessment of the degree of reduction which has taken place during a multi-step production of a metal. In addition, possible flaws in a metal may result from small amounts of oxides included in the solid. The analyte of interest may be present as a major component of a sample of interest, or as a minor impurity - beneficial or requiring removal - in another matrix.Numerous methods have been established for the analysis of species in solution samples - for example, Fe2+ and Fe3+ by titration, Cr6+ by colourimetric means, etc. With appropriate knowledge of the solution being analysed, many of these methods are fairly straightforward, extremely reproducible and accurate. In those instances where the analyte in a solution is known to be in only one form, the analysis is even more straightforward, since it can be achieved instrumentally (by AAS, rCP-OES or rCP-MS, for example).However, the situation with respect to the analysis of solids is not as simple. Various techniques - such as X-ray diffraction - are routinely used by our mineralogists to obtain information about the various minerals present in solid samples, and thus about the oxidation states of the analyte elements present. However, these techniques usually give results that are qualitative, or semi-quantitative at best. They are also usually time-consuming and expensive. One of our colleagues at Mintek, Deshenthree Chetty, has done extensive work in developing a method for the quantification of manganese species in solids using mineralogical methods, and this is no small achievement."

Traditionally it has commonly been believed that the only problem with inductive reactance in a submerged-arc furnace is that it leads to difficulties with the electricity supply as a result of the Iow power factor. This paper sets out to show that inductive reactance can also give rise to the following problems in the metallurgical operation of a furnace: (i) dead and live phases (fairly well known in openarc furnaces), (ii) lack of sensitivity to electrode movement, (iii) interactions between electrodes. These problems increase with increasing inductive reactance relative to resistance, and thus they increase with furnace size. Each of these effects is discussed in detail, and suggestions are made for their alleviation.

Computer control of flotation at the Ecstall concentrator By M. P. AMSDEN, C. CHAPMAN, and M. G. READING Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, operates the Kidd Creek Mine, a 10000 tons per day base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different types of ore are mined and milled: copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous on-stream X-ray analysis. Recently this system was automated further by the addition of computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery by 1,1 per cent, zinc recovery by 1,4 per cent, and have reduced reagent costs by 16 per cent. Although not expected, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved slightly as well.

The past decade has seen a tremendous revival of the base metal industry in Africa, coupled with an unprecedented increase in the prices of base metal commodities in the last couple of years. The theme of the 4th Southern African Base Metal Conference, is therefore, ?Africa?s base metals resurgence?. This conference will explore the contributions made by the mining and metallurgical disciplines to the base metals industry in Africa. It will also investigate how the base metals industry in Africa can capture the maximum potential from the increase in base metal prices through research, innovative thinking, new ways of operating and project implementation. The conference will also consider the influence of Europe?s REACH programme on the base metal industry in Southern Africa. The conference will include a technical visit to Rössing Mine (Uranium) and will be followed by technical visits to Ongopolo (copper), Skorpion Mine (zinc) and Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation(zinc and lead). The conference, to be held in Swakopmund, Namibia, also confirms the commitment of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), to hosting a regular forum on base metals in the Southern African region. Swakopmund is an ideal conference venue for local and international mining and metallurgical professionals to be exposed to the latest advances in exploration, resource evaluation, projects and technological advances in Southern Africa?s base metal industry. This study was aimed at a comparison of the efectiveness of a new axial-flow type of mixer impeller (the Prochem design) with the traditional inclined-blade turbine. The intended application of the mixers was in carbon-in-pulp plants for the extraction of gold from cyanide-leached pulps. The first part of the project involved water and ion-exchange resin, and measurement of the power drawn by the various sizes of impeller to fully suspend the resin. The rate of reaction between the resin and the solution was measured as a function of the power input to the mixer. In the second part of the project, use was made of activated carbon, silver cyanide solutions, and ore pulps. The rate of absorption of silver from the solutions and pulps was determined, as well as the rate of attrition of the activated carbon caused by the various impellers in clear water. The Prochem design of axial-flow impeller was shown to fully suspend solids at only one-quarter of the power requireabyan inclined-blade turbine of similar size. The axial-flow pattern produced was responsible for the more uniform vertical concentration profile of suspended beads produced by the Prochem design. These measurements verified the observations of other researchers that the rate of reaction is not affected by the ;design of impeller provided that al the solids are fully suspended. The Prochem design of impeller therefore achieved the same reaction rate as the conventional turbine at a quarter of the power input. The atrition rates of activated carbon could be correlated, in terms of the energy absorbed, by the same equation for al the impellers. Higher concentrations of activated carbon increased the amount of carbon fines produced. These results emphasize the importance of designing mixers for minimum power consumption.

"The objective of any mining company is to sustainably maximize the net present value (NPV) throughout the life-of-mine (LOM). The expected NPV over the LOM is calculated based on a mine plan, yet the actual value realized by the mining company depends greatly on the level of intertemporal execution against the mine plan. Consequently, a major key performance indicator (KPI) that is often overlooked in open pit mining, due to a greater focus on temporal KPIs, is the degree of spatial compliance to the mine plan. Such focus sometimes leads to short-term actions being detrimental to long-term plans. In this paper we describe the development and implementation of a spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation approach for an open pit mine. Application to a case study open pit iron ore mine in South Africa indicated a significant improvement in the spatial mine-to-plan compliance, from 69% to 94% over a three-year period from 2014 to 2016. These results indicate that implementation of the proposed spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation approach can contribute positively to improving the level of spatial execution and assists in improving the alignment between short-term, medium-term, and LOM plans.IntroductionThe objective of any mining company is to maximize the net present value (NPV) throughout the life of mine (LOM). Hydrogen peroxide is gaining acceptance as a reagent for the treatment of mining effluents containing cyanide. In this paper some of the chemical and environmental aspects of treatment with hydrogen peroxide are discussed, and one way of improving the economics of the process is described. This is known as selective detoxification, which involves the oxidation of the less stable (cyanide) complexes while not affecting the more stable complexes, which contribute very little to the concentration of free cyanide or to the toxicity of the treated water.

It is difficult to evaluate exploration properties in a manner that is transparent, repeatable and easily re-calculated to cater for different geological interpretations, but the risk-based assessment methodology, the Geological Risk Method, developed and described by Lord et al (2001) attempts to satisfy all these criteria. This paper examines a case study example based on valuations of exploration projects conducted by SRK Consulting using this methodology, and describes some of the advantages and limitations of the method.

An electrochemical technique based on the solid oxide galvanic cel Mo / Mo + MoO2/ ZrO2-MgO / Fe + (FexO)slag + Ag / Fe was used in a determination of FexO activities in liquid slag systems. The emf measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and microprobe analysis of the cross-sections of the electrolyte tubes used in direct contact with the slag melts indicated that slag attack did not affect the open-circuit emf values during normal cell operation, The reliability of the cell was confirmed by the good agreement between the standard free energy of formation of liquid Fep obtained in the present study and those reported in the literature, The FexO activities were determined in FexO -CaO and FexO-SiO2 slags at 1673 K, and are in good agreement with those measured by the conventional gas-equilibrium technique. The experimental technique was successfully extended to the measurement of Fe2O activities in the complex slags that are used for the external desilliconization of the hot metal product of the blast furnace.
