Selected members of the slag system were reduced in graphite crucibles in an argon atmosphere, and the physicochemical properties of the reduced derivatives of the slags were determined in inert crucibles. It was found that slags having magnesium aluminium titanate as the primary phase before reduction underwent an increase in liquidus temperature, accompanied by a change in the primary phase. No analogous behaviour could be detected for the slags having perovskite as the initial primary crystallization product. In most instances, the viscosity of the melt passed through an initial minimum, followed by an increase as the reduction time was extended. Increased MgO/CaO ratio. basicity, titania content, and reduction temperature all served to accelerate thickening. During reduction, the electrical conductivity of the slags tended to rise relative to the value for the unreduced melt.

The paper addresses pipe flows of aqueous medium-sand slurries at velocities lower than the deposition-limit velocity. Laboratory test results including measurements of particle concentration distributions are used in order to describe a flow with a (pseudo-) linear concentration gradient above a stationary bed. Particle dispersion within the flow is evaluated and a stratification-ratio equation is formulated, estimating a portion of contact load in the flow. The formula is incorporated in the proposed predictive model for the hydraulic gradient for a medium-sand flow above a stationary bed.

The pipeline transport of paste, backfill or thickened tailings slurries is an important component of the tailings disposal process in many mines around the world. These mixtures contain significant fractions of fine (clay) and coarse (sand) particles, causing them to exhibit non-Newtonian flow behaviour and high frictional pressure gradients. There is often economic incentive to operate these pipelines in the laminar flow regime. Irrefutable evidence has shown that coarse particle settling can occur during the laminar flow of these slurries even when static settling tests show no indication of such behaviour. Previously, a ?rule-of-thumb? minimum frictional pressure gradient of ~1.5 to 2 kPa/m was suggested to ensure effective sand transport, based on the results of tests conducted using viscous Newtonian oils. In this paper, we examine the results of laminar flow tests of non-Newtonian, coarse-particle laden slurries conducted with pipeline loops of 50, 100, 150 and 250 mm in diameter. The results indicate that the ratio of the mean wall shear stress to the mean surficial particle stress is abetter indicator of laminar flow settling tendency than frictional pressure gradient.

This paper summarizes the characteristics of Southern African coals, presents a fundamental approach to the combustion performance of coal, and reviews some of the recent developments in the fields of technological evaluation and boiler design for coals typical of this region. This includes a summary of the petrographic constituents of coa~ highlighting the differences between the Palaeozoic coals of the northern and southern hemispheres (Laurasia and Gondwana respectively), and the effects of these properties on the combustion performance of coal as seen in terms of laboratory, pilot-scale, and full-scale operating conditions. Recent developments in boiler design linked to advanced characterization studies and commercial experience have led to unprecedented use, with maximum effect, of the low-grade, high-ash, high-inertinite coals typical of some parts of this region. In the light of this success, more adequate understanding and better methods of assessment of the coals typical of the Gondwana region are called for, particularly in the light of the price premium for high-grade coal and the more cost-effective lower grade coals on the international steam markets.

Actual observations of rockburst damage, together with some theoretical considerations, strongly suggest that conventional approaches to the design of tunnel support are inappropriate where there is a significant seismic risk. The present widely used support systems, which are based on stiff, fully grouted re-bars, are inadequate where rock displacement velocities exceed 1 m/s. It is shown by means of a simple conceptual model that yielding of the support elements is essential to ensure their survival when they are subject to the high strain rates typical of severe rockbursts. The model proposes that the total load in the element is an impulsive tensile force imposed and sustained by a single 'tributary' block ejected from the tunnel wall. The stability of the system is determined from a comparison of the kinetic energy developed by the block with the energy of deformation absorbed by a grouted steel tendon. A novel test procedure was developed for the validation of this approach, and for an examination of the energy-absorbing capacity of stiff and yielding tendons. The results of an initial series of tests showed that the recently developed cone-bolt is an effective yielding device. It absorbs twenty times more impulsive-load energy than is consumed by the complete fracture of grouted re-bar of equivalent strength, and it remains totally unscathed. Importantly, the results demonstrate that the ejection model is not merely an explanatory concept, but can be used as a representative and valid design method.

Australian mining companies are actively exploring for and developing mineral deposits throughout the world with interests in emerging markets such as Africa, Asia and South America. It is important to understand emerging market risk as this will affect the willingness of mining companies and financial institutions to invest in a country, especially with reference to their key asset, the mining licence or operating/concession agreement. Mining companies looking to develop new projects in emerging markets have different risk profiles than projects in countries such as Australia and Canada. Examples of key risks faced in emerging markets include: 1. political - expropriation, nationalisation, contract frustration, currency inconvertibility, war, terrorism, strikes, riots and civil commotion; and 2. legal - mining legislation, arbitration and dispute resolution, trade agreements. There is a problem in the difference in risk perceptions between mining companies, financial institutions and insurers. This can cause different stakeholders to carry out different evaluations of the risks faced by a project, resulting in confusion about the risk margin attached to any project. In a time where resource nationalisation and energy security are prompting governments to become more involved in the mining sector we run through some recent examples of mining companies that have had problems due to the key risks highlighted earlier. Importance of carrying out the right due diligence to replace perceptions with reality: ? early identification of risks - detailed due diligence on emerging market risks that may arise will help with their identification and mitigation, ? make use of companies that can help identify risks and suggest solutions, ? control the cost of financing - risk margin applied to a project ? finance loan will be influenced by the risks faced, and ? risk management and using political risk insurance. There are plenty of opportunities in emerging markets but it is important to recognise the associated risks. Detailed due diligence at an early stage will provide long-term benefits.

Notches are used routinely for measuring the flow rate of water with free surface flows. As far as can be ascertained, no work has been done to investigate the performance of these flow rate measurement devices for non-Newtonian suspensions. The Flow Process Research Centre at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology has investigated the flow rate of kaolin and bentonite suspensions from a tank for two notch shapes, namely rectangular and triangular, and for 3 different concentrations of each suspension. The notches were calibrated using water and then the kaolin and bentonite suspensions were tested in them. The rheological characterisation of the fluids was done with a Paar Physica MC-1 rotary viscometer fitted with a cup and roughened bob. Analysis of the results shows a significant increase in discharge coefficient with increase in concentration, and the discharge coefficient has been correlated to the yield stress. This is the first such study, and further investigation is needed to confirm and extend these findings.

Fugitive dust from mineral extraction and processing activities can significantly influence air quality, the environment, and the health and quality of life of workers and surrounding communities. Poor engagement and communication between experts and lay persons, disciplinary silos and polarised viewpoints have made it difficult to develop a holistic understanding of the complex health issues associated with environmental emissions of mine dusts, and consequently to design meaningful and integrated approaches to address such issues. The collaborative Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Mine Dust and Health Network, hosted by Minerals to Metals at the University of Cape Town, serves as a collaborative think-tank to inform research directions within and across disciplines, government policy and regulations, health monitoring programmes at public clinics, industry best practice, community healthcare and impact prevention programmes. It focuses initially on the southern African region, but with the intention to expand to mining-intensive developing countries within the rest of Africa, South America and Asia. This paper outlines the approach and activities of this global transdisciplinary and intersectoral network and presents some of the key outputs and achievements to date. Although the incidence of heat stroke in South African gold mines is small, work continues on its reduction. This paper proposes limits of heat stress that are applicable to South African underground conditions, with the warning that they should not be extrapolated to other situations without careful consideration having first been given to their limitations. These limits of heat stress take physical and physiological considerations into account, and they correspond to there being a 10-6 risk of an essentially nude man developing a rectal temperature in excess of 40°C. It is recommended that further work should be undertaken on the development of equations for the calculation of the heat transfer from clothed men, the derivation of equations that quantify the physiological conductance and sweat rate response of humans, and on establishing the frequency distributions that describe variations in rectal temperature response between individuals in different types of environment.

A large new underground platinum mining project required that all different mining options were investigated during an option study before proceeding to the prefeasibility stage of the project. The capital project team identified 21 different options requiring investigation. These options considered 10 different access methods and 4 different mining methods. Each of the 21 options required a mine design, a valid production schedule, and the associated economics in order to facilitate a comparison on project Net Present Value (NPV) and other metrics. The project sponsors required this work to be completed in 3 months and therefore the project team decided to adopt an object-oriented modelling approach as implemented by Cyest Corporation. This would allow all 21 options to be valuated within the tight time frame due to the generation and re-use of templates. Standard objects were configured into templates containing the mine layout, design, and scheduling logic. These templates could then be assembled into a model to represent the option being investigated. The adoption of rules-based design and production scheduling then allowed for the rapid generation of a valid production schedule for each option with different iterations of varying production ramp-up and mining efficiency assumptions. The activity-based operating costs, labour, and capital were also linked to the standard templates such as a half level or barrel, which were then replicated to represent the overall mine structure for each option under consideration. Using this approach for each option, a full production schedule was produced per mining activity, the operating costs were calculated using activity-based costing, an infrastructure capital expenditure estimate was determined, the development capital requirements costed, and an overall NPV determined. This options study was completed in an unprecedented 10 weeks and a recommendation was put through to the Business to take three of the options to the next study phase.

The removal of gravel from the seabed using a hydraulic mining tool is a complex multi-phase problem that cannot be analysed using traditional continuum based simulation techniques. One potential approach is to simulate the behaviours of the solid phase via the discrete element method and the liquid phase via finite volume based computational fluid dynamics. The interaction between the phases is accounted for by Eulerian coupling. The feasibility of using the combined computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method to simulate gravel entrainment from an idealized seabed is evaluated. The simulation results are validated using experimental data. It is concluded that while the current approach appears feasible, further work needs to be done to improve the accuracy of the simulation and to evaluate the approach?s ability to model more complex behaviours.

(Graduate Member) A first attempt is made at optimization of sample spacing in South African gold mines. The De Wijs model, which is shown to give a good representation of the geostatistical properties of gold values, is used to analyse the influence of the distance between samples along a stope face on the error of estimation of the stope value. The influence of other factors such as the face advance before resampling, the sample density, and the stope size, is also considered. Practical conclusions are drawn concerning the optimum sampling policy to be followed in various situations, and it is shown that sampling on a regular grid does not necessarily give the best results.

Comminution is a critical stage of mineral processing which aims to reduce the size of ore particles through breakage, consequently increasing the likelihood of liberation of valuable minerals. Several factors, such as pre-existing cracks, mineralogical composition and particle size, are known to affect ore breakage behaviour. While investigating the contributing role of each factor is essential to improve understanding of breakage, isolating individual factors by experiment is typically impractical. Numerical techniques such as the Bonded Particle Model-Discrete Element Method (BPM-DEM) have been developed as a means of studying closely controlled breakage conditions. This study evaluates this technique in modelling the effect of pre-existing cracks breakage behaviour for synthetic ore specimens during impact breakage in a short impact load cell (SILC). Synthetic ore was modelled as a collection of discrete entities connected by brittle-elastic beams. Model parameters were calibrated against macroscopic material properties of a conventional homogenous synthetic ore. The extent of pre-existing cracks within specimens was prescribed by varying discontinuities between the connecting entities. An approach with the insertion of seed points was used to model the mineralogy of the specimens. Results showed that pre-existing cracks resulted in a decrease in the fracture force as the crack density increased. Additionally, the irregularity of fracture patterns within rock specimens after impact became more apparent as the crack density increased. The findings were used to emphasise some of the attributable causes of the variation observed between ore hardness characterisation tests and in situ ore behaviour. "Tenke Fungurume Mining Company (TFM), located in Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), began production of copper cathode and cobalt hydroxide in March 2009. Copper production capacity was 115 000 t/a utilizing a semi-autogenous grinding, agitated leach, countercurrent decantation process followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW). Cobalt production capacity (as cobalt hydroxide) was 8000 t/a utilizing a three-stage purification/precipitation process treating raffinate from the copper SX-EW process. Recently a phase II expansion was completed, in which copper electrowinning capacity was doubled and four stages were added to the SX plant. Corresponding enhancements were made to mining, milling, and processing to bring production to 195 kt/a copper and 15 kt/a cobalt. An additional sulphuric acid plant is currently being constructed, adding 1400 t/d sulphuric acid to bring total acid production to 2250 t/d for use in leaching at TFM.Initial copper electrowinning results were satisfactory, but cathode quality and current efficiency decreased as copper production increased. The Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) Technology Centre and TFM personnel began operation of two bench-scale copper electrowinning cells in the tankhouse to diagnose chemistry effects on the cathode and anode. The results indicated an excellent electrolyte chemistry, producing finely crystalline copper at 430 A/m2 current density with 98% current efficiency. Attention next turned to the physical factors of the electrowinning cells, including electrode insulator geometry and performance. A demonstration cell was selected in the tankhouse and was operated with varying cathode and anode insulator geometries. Operation of the demonstration cell with a three-side cathode edge strip, A-style anode insulators, and an improved cell furniture design increased current efficiency from 77% to 89% at 400 A/m2 current density. Cathode quality improved correspondingly. TFM is now operating at 92% current efficiency."
