The amount of nitrogen contained in an austenitic stainless steel affects its properties significantly. The maximum content of nitrogen feasible in a range of experimental low-nickel austenitic stainless steels containing significant additions of copper is evaluated The nitrogen content is calculated based on published interaction coefficients, and by use of the FACT thermodynamic computer program and database. The differences between the two methods of prediction can be attributed to inaccuracies in the published interaction coefficients. The calculated nitrogen contents of some experimental alloys are compared with the actual nitrogen contents obtained when the alloys were produced in an induction furnace. The actual nitrogen contents obtained were higher than those predicted by either method, and this is believed to be due to a super saturation of nitrogen occurring in the melt, which was not relieved during the short period in which the charge was molten. It was evident that the experimental alloys can contain between 0,25 and 0,40 per cent nitrogen (depending on temperature, composition, and nitrogen pressure) when melted in a sealed induction furnace, and this is more than adequate for the purpose of forming and stabilizing the austenite phase.

A computer-based, real-time mine management system has been installed in a number of underground operations. The system’s innovative software application is coupled with wireless data acquisition and database management to provide complete mine monitoring and control execution in closed-loop control fashion. The system is well suited to automatically assign equipment, acquire status, and reassign resources based on status; and to automate information handling. The system has provided mines with improved utilization of the equipment fleet and mining crews, and reduced workplace cycle time. This paper describes the deployment of systems at a number of underground mining operations and discusses future development of the system. The use of face conveyors in gold mines by N. C. JOUGHIN. B.Sc. (Eng.). Ph.D. (Wits) (Member) and A. C. BUCKMASTER; M.A. (Cantab.) A mechanized stope-cleaning system has been developed around an armoured face conveyor, which was tested on the surface and in two underground trials. In the second underground trial, an average face advance of 8,5 m per month was obtained with a labour productivity of 27 ca/worker/month on a two-shift blast cycle. Two new face cleaning systems have been built, each incorporating an armoured face conveyor, a loading plough, a collapsible self-advancing barricade, and an integral roof-support system. These are about to be tested. A new type of reciprocating flight conveyor is being developed for stope use. This is cheaper, lighter, and more compact, and exhibits better wear characteristics, than an armoured face conveyor. In the early stages of the trials, this conveyor frequently achieved a singleshift blast cycle. It should be possible to achieve face advances of up to 40 ca/worker/month with a consistent one-shift blast cycle. The use of drill rigs and a self-advancing roof-support system would improve the productivity to over 50 ca/worker/month.

SYNOPSIS A prototype collimated radiometric face scanner was tested in the Harmony Gold Mine. The results obtained during the pilot study indicate that in situ radiometric uranium assays are statistically indistinguishable from those obtained conventionally from channel chip samples. In addition, the study demonstrated that reasonably reliable gold estimates can be deduced from the radiometric measurements, by use of the ratio of gold to uranium within a mine. The instrumentation, calibration procedures, and background determination are described briefly.

From its early beginnings, shortly after the Witwatersrand gold rush of 1886, Randfontein Estates was planned as a heavyweight operation. The venture was capitalized by J .B. Robinson to the tune of £2 million at time when syndicates were loath to invest £50000 in ventures in and around the new metropolis, Johannesburg, which had sprung up midway along the Witwatersrand. But by then Robinson was a colossus among his contemporaries. Operating as a loner as he had done on the Kimberley diamond fields, where he created his own individual fortune and commanded the sort of respect which, early in his career, led to his election as Mayor of Kimberley. When news of a third gold discovery in the Transvaal (the first two had been in the Pilgrim's Rest and Barberton areas) reached Kimberley, Robinson's pioneering spirit was further stired and he hastened to the new goldfield to stake his claims before his business adversaries- Rhodes, John X. Meriman, Hans Sauer, and Caldecot-could entrench themselves. Once the new Witwatersrand goldfields had been proclaimed, claimpegging started in earnest. But the question was: where to start? Diamond men al, not one of the financiers had any knowledge of the geology of the gold-bearing formations.

Recent publications have demonstrated the important role that can be played by a priori information of the grade levels, variability, and spatial patterns in adjacent or nearby areas in improving the quality of grade estimates for virgin or sparsely drilled areas. A research project was therefore conducted involving the collection and analysis of extensive sampling and borehole data from 7 reefs on some 30 Witwatersrand mines. This paper shows that the 'equivalent' log variance for the two-parameter lognormal model provides a good basis for the study and comparison of the levels and behaviour of relative variances. The trends of these against the corresponding log areas were found to form distinctive patterns, which are useful for these purposes. The patterns for the Basal, Vaal, Carbon Leader, and Main Reef Series form a reasonably close group, whereas those for the V.C.R.(particularly where the facies are mixed), B Reef, and Kimberley-Elsburg Reefs (particularly for narrow channel widths) do not always conform. The patterns shown by underground chip samples are also compared with those obtained from borehole cores. It is shown how this information can be used to improve the borehole valuation of new mines and of virgin areas in existing mines.

PorterIn introducing his paper, Mr Roman said that whereas in manufacturing plants the yearly production levels were usually chosen to produce the largest annual cash flow, in a mining operation, the raw materials (ore) were exhaustible so that the production had to be scheduled to maximize the total net present worth of the operation. This optimum production schedule could be determined by using dynamic programming. The required information was readily available to management at most mines. The 'possible operating range' of production rates lay between the rate with the highest profit per ton. and that with the highest profit per year. The optimum production rate started typically at the top of this range and decreased slowly as the deposit was depleted.Dynamic programming was used to determine several production schedules for a hypothetical mine-mill complex. The effects of changes in the ore grade estimates, size of deposit and acceptable rate of interest on the production schedule were taken into account. Apart from the fact that the net present worth of the overall profits was larger than that obtained by conventional methods, it appeared from the cases studied that the amount of metal recovered was also greater.Dr it P. King commented that this was a very interesting application of dynamic programming. He pointed out, however, that the market price of the metal was likely to vary significantly and randomly during the life of the mine, and he suggested that the problem should, therefore, be reformulated as a stochastic dynamic programming problem.If the price of the metal rose to abnormally high levels, a much higher than normal production rate could be expected. The results of analyses given in Table 5 showed that the production rate was a function of market price. In his view the stochastic problem could be solved just as easily as the deterministic problem.In reply to a question by Dr King as to whether the function relating recovery to production rate (Table I) was based on real data, the author replied that it was based on the results of an analysis conducted at the Union Carbide Corporation's Pine Creek tungsten mine in California.Dr D. M. Hawkins stated that costs were incurred when the production rate was altered, for example, in appointing or laying off staff, and that in practice it may be necessary to take these costs into account in finding the optimum production rate. Mr Roman replied that, while normal administrative costs were accounted for, the additional costs incurred in appointing and laying off staff were not taken into account."

The use of dilute sulphur dioxide (SO2) gas mixtures for the oxidation/precipitation of manganese has been explored widely in recent years. The technical merit of the concept is well proven and implementation of the technology on commercial scale is imminent. This paper reviews the technology of manganese removal by means of dilute SO2 gas mixtures and highlights some of the challenges associated with its implementation on industrial scale. A brief review of the technology is presented; the review considers both the mechanism and chemistry of manganese oxidation/precipitation with dilute SO2 gas mixtures. The impact of variables such as temperature, pH and SO2 concentrations on the manganese removal process is assessed. Challenges associated with implementation of the technology on industrial scale are discussed. Gas dispersion is highlighted as a critical design consideration.

Opening: On Tuesday, 9th June, The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy held a well-attended Colloquium on Milling at Mintek, Randburg. The meeting opened with a short address by Dr H. Wagner, Director General of the Chamber of Mines Research Organization. In his address, he highlighted the cost of the milling process to the industry. The fact that the industry at home and overseas had, at considerable expense, sent some 270 delegates to the Colloquium demonstrated the industry's concern at the high cost of this process. Clearly, this cost could be reduced only by greater understanding and interchange of information, which was the purpose of meetings such as these. Mine water The Third International Mine Water Congress is to be held in Melbourne from 23rd to 28th October, 1988, the year of Australia's bicentenary.

The mining industry has yet to fully accept and embrace the strategic role of technology and innovation in successful business planning and execution. In this study, we empirically determine the factors that influence acceptance of technology solutions in the mining industry in South Africa, assess critical success factors influencing adoption of advanced technology in the South African mining industry, and explore challenges faced by the mining industry in South Africa in adopting advanced technology in its operations. Thematic content analysis is employed in the data analysis. Results show that critical success factors to the adoption of mining technology include learning culture, knowledge sharing, high labour costs, and behaviour of other firms in the industry; commonly identified challenges include inadequate engagement with external stakeholders, uncertainties, the cyclical nature of the sector, and high risk related to the adoption of unproven technology and performance systems focused on volumetric production. The study encourages mining companies to implement usage of technology. This can be properly done through regular engagement with the Minerals Council South Africa.

An assessment is made of the possible scope for the use of activated charcoal as the solid adsorbent in an upflow fluidized-bed contactor, and a pilot-plant programme for the recovery of low concentrations of dissolved gold in this contactor is described. It was found possible to produce an effluent that contains less than 0,01 p.p.m. of dissolved gold.

It is suggested that an increase in the production from thin coal seams in South Africa is necessary, and that a substantial amount of any increase will be mined by the bord-and-pillar method. For the purpose of this study, a thin coal seam was regarded as any seam 1,5 m thick or less to the minimum thickness at which mechanized equipment can operate in bord-and-pillar workings. The equipment being utilized in thin-seam bord-and-pillar layouts includes conventional equipment, load-hauldump cars (scoops), and drum-type and Fairchild-Wilcox continuous miners. Comparisons are made of these types of equipment for bord-and-pillar mining at various seam thicknesses within the thin-seam range. The evaluations involved production rates and the cost of extraction for South African conditions, use being made of an existing computer modelling technique in the generation of production rates. The indications are that, for seam thicknesses greater than 0,9 m, drum-type continuous miners utilizing continuous haulage are the most productive and cost-effective equipment at present operating in thin-seam bord-and- pillar workings. Where seams thinner than 0,9 m are to be exploited, Fairchild-Wilcox continuous miners, particularly the Mark 22, produce the most coal at the lowest cost.

The techniques used in this study of the non-oxidative dissolution rates of high- and Iow-grade nickel mattes in hydrochloric acid involved leaching and the use of a rotating ring-disc electrode. It was found that the rate of metal dissolution depends on the potential at which the matte dissolves, a maximum rate of dissolution being observed at -0,2 V to 0,3 V (relative to a saturated calomel electrode). The results are comparable with those obtained in work on the dissolution of synthetic nickel and iron sulphides. The adverse effect of excess sulphur on the rate of nonoxidative dissolution is explained in terms of the mixed potential of the reaction. The leaching studies showed the feasibility of processing a high-grade nickel matte by non-oxidative dissolution, and indicate that maximum rates can be obtained in the presence of fairly Iow concentrations of oxidant. A relative selective dissolution of iron can be obtained from the Iow-grade matte under reducing conditions, thus resulting in a significant upgrading of this material. SYNOPSIS A back-analysis procedure based upon 35 mm photography was developed on a laboratory scale for the pur¬pose of determining the percentage of oversize particles known to be present in heaps of fragmented rock. Eight simple blends of crushed stone containing varying percentages of oversize on a 1:40 modelled scale were examined. Simulated test conditions for the following were subjected to the photographic study: (1) a bench heap, (2) the surface exposure of a partially excavated heap, (3) a gravity-sorted surface as occurs on an apron dump, and (4) four quadrant views of an incrementally built conical heap of rock fragments. The best back-analysis determinations were obtained from (4), the cone, over all eight blends of fragments. The mean error was within -0,16 per cent of the true value, with a range of ± 1,872. This was for oversize contents of 5 to 20 per cent where a minimum 25 per cent of the photograph area was processed by digitizer. The worst results were from the apron dump at - 1,462 per cent for a mean error of ± 4,174 per cent. The intermediate results were from the undisturbed bench at -0,186 per cent with a mean error of ±2,862 per cent.

"Geometallurgical models are a strategic tool used primarily in planning, diagnosis, and process optimisation. This paper discusses the development of a predictive model for flotation recovery at Kansanshi concentrator in Zambia as a function of key operational parameters. Daily data for milling and flotation from the circuit processing the copper sulphide ore was analysed. This data, recorded over a period of one year of production, was collected from diverse sensors measuring semi-autogenous milling and flotation parameters. Statistical analysis showed that copper head grade, acid-insoluble, and acid-soluble copper, SAG mill throughput, ball mill load, and tonnage of feed material to the SAG mill in the -125 +63 mm size fraction contributed to the prediction power of the proposed empirical model by as much as 90%. Finally, a proposal was made for the development of a simulation model under MODSIM®, a flexible tool for mineral processing applications. This was to test the limitations of the empirical model for future refinement. IntroductionKansanshi is the largest copper mine in Africa and the world’s eighth largest copper producer, with a total of 253 272 t of copper produced in 2016 (Newall, 2017). It is located approximately 10 km north of Solwezi, the capital and administrative headquarters of the North Western Province, Republic of Zambia. The ore deposit consists predominantly of chalcopyrite and malachite with variable amounts of chalcocite, bornite, chrysocolla, and azurite. Because of the varying proportions of sulphide and oxide copper minerals, the ore is classified into three distinct categories: sulphide, mixed, and oxide ores. As such, three separate processing circuits are used to mill the ore down to a standard targeted grind size of 80% passing 150 µm before froth flotation and leaching.A lot of research and development has been done to improve the performance of the sulphide ore circuit at Kansanshi. Despite the research efforts and subsequent operation, the sulphide ore circuit did not attain the target recovery and grade for 2016, primarily because of the complexity of the orebody.The constant drive to achieve the set production target of recovery and concentration grade after froth flotation motivated the development of a tool for the prediction of recovery. The anticipated benefit is not only to enable the plant to apply corrective actions when needed, but also to make a tool available for the quick assessment of the plant performance of the. For that purpose, data spanning June 2016 to May 2017 was analysed, cleaned up and curvefitted to an empirical model. In doing so, key parameters were determined and calibrated to represent the behaviour of the plant."

The investment decision under uncertainty by H. M. WELLS, Pr. Eng., M.Se. (Fellow) The future outcome of a proposed investment is uncertain at the time the decision must be made to accept it or reject it. This uncertainty can be expressed in the form of a probability distribution. An attempt is made to rationalize the investment decision under these circumstances, especially when the range of possible outcomes extends into both the acceptable and unacceptable domains. A rigorous definition of risk is proposed, and a criterion of risk aversion is developed that forms the boundary between acceptable risk and unacceptable risk (called the loss limitation line). It is shown that this decision criterion can also serve as a quantitative yardstick in the evaluation of various possibilities for 'tailoring' the proposal to mlke it more compatible with the particular financial circumstances of the company concerned.
