"Rio Tinto’s Western Australian expansion, combined with mining within structurally complex geology and increasingly below the water table, presents challenges in effective slope management to ensure safe and economic mining.The Geotechnical Management System (GMS) was developed by Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) to manage geotechnical risks identified during the design process and implementation, and to ensure feedback based on the ‘as-found’ conditions. The GMS utilizes a risk-based approach to geotechnical risk management and is centred on the geotechnical risk and hazard assessment management system (GRAHAMS). GRAHAMS is used to assess pre- and post-control risk for future potential risks (planned slopes), current risks (as-built slopes), and actual geotechnical hazards (realized risks) identified in the pit. This serves as a core operational risk management tool in identifying and prioritizing key risk sectors and management of critical controls. The system’s database reporting functionality supports effective communication of operational risks to operational personnel, as well as reporting the risk profile across operations to management.A rigorous engagement process between design engineers and sitebased engineers is implemented to ensure that key design assumptions, limitations, risks, and opportunities are understood by the site teams. This information, together with mine plan schedule details, is used to assess the design risk and develop appropriate controls. These controls typically include slope performance monitoring and slope reconciliation. The design feedback loop is closed through sharing of key slope performance and reconciliation data with the design teams.The GMS has been successfully implemented in RTIO pits and is fundamental to successful geotechnical slope management. Improved characterization of design assumptions has allowed for re-assessment of the pit design and improved hazard management in high-risk pits. The GMS, GRAHAMS, and other processes reduce the incidence of unexpected slope instability. Improved understanding of rock mass conditions has allowed for economic optimization through redesign of slopes, allowing for an improved understanding of risk and fewer unexpected conditions (surprises), hence an increased realized value."

Geostatistical modelling aims at providing unbiased estimates of the grades of elements of economic interest in mining operations, and assessing the associated uncertainty in these resources and reserves. Conventional practice consists of using the data as error-free values and performing the typical steps of data analysis - domaining, semivariogram analysis, and estimation/simulation. However, in many mature deposits, information comes from different drilling campaigns that were sometimes completed decades ago, when little or no quality assurance and quality control (QA/AC) procedures were available. Although this legacy data may have significant sampling errors, it provides valuable information and should be combined with more recent data that has been subject to strict QA/QC procedures. In this paper we show that ignoring the errors associated with sample data considerably underestimates the uncertainty (and consequently the economic risk) associated with a mining project. We also provide a methodology to combine data with different sampling errors, thus preserving the relevant global and local statistics. The method consists of constructing consistent simulated sets of values at the sample locations, in order to reproduce the error of each drilling campaign and the spatial correlation of the grades. It is based on a Gibbs sampler, where at every sample location, the actual sample value (with error) is removed and a conditional distribution is calculated from simulated values at nearby sample locations. A value is drawn from that distribution and kept only if it satisfies some statistical requirements-specifically, the global relative error and local means and variances must be reproduced. All sample locations are visited and simulated sample values are generated iteratively, until the required statistics are satisfactorily attained over all sample locations. This generates one realization of possible sample values, respecting the fact that the actual samples are known to carry an error given by the global relative error. Multiple realizations of simulated sample values can be obtained by repeating the procedure. At the end of this procedure, at every sample location a set of simulated sample values is available that accounts for the imprecision of the information. Furthermore, within each realization, the simulated sample values are consistent with each other, reproducing the spatial continuity and local statistics. These simulated sets of sample values can then be used as input to conventional simulation on a full grid to assess the uncertainty in the final resources over large volumes. The methodology is presented and demonstrated using a synthetic data-set for clarity.

Cave mining is an underground mass mining technique. The largest projects, which are known as ‘super caves’, produce hundreds of thousands of tons of ore per day, which involves large footprints with considerable column height, and have a life of mine of over 20-40 years. These operations are typically located deep, under high stresses and in competent rock masses, making initiation and propagation of the caving process harder to manage. These challenges must be confronted by optimizing the fragmentation of the orebody to achieve smaller size blocks that will result in consistent caving and improved flow of the ore from the drawpoints. To achieve better performance from the drawpoints, preconditioning is applied to fragment and damage the material required to cave. We present a proposed design for preconditioning in underground mines, considering the challenges that these large-scale mines are already facing, based on a comprehensive analysis of current design parameters, case studies, and sensitivity analyses using numerical models.

The selection of open-pit slope angles involves high-value decisions with small changes in slope angle, often representing significant changes in net present value. The existing methods used to define design acceptance criteria have evolved from factor of safety to probability of failure (P[F]) to risk consequence to risk frontiers, which represents current state of the art. Current design acceptance measures are based on references to published tables representing the experience and judgement of their authors, who did not specify the purpose of the measures contained therein. As the purpose of the published design acceptance criteria is not specified (i.e., definite stability, marginal stability, optimization, etc.), such tables cannot be used to achieve optimum slope angles that maximize profitability. This paper develops a design acceptance criterion that maximizes profitability by defining a formulation for optimum risk that balances expected risk and reward. The model developed is titled the Mining Risk Model (MRM), and is applied to open-pit slope angle selection through an equation for optimum probability of downside (P[D]O) that balances the upside or opportunity, the P[F], and the downside impact. This formulation for optimum risk is unique, as many authors have presented objective functions for their risk models that can be optimized, but none of the sources reviewed contained a formulation for optimum risk. The MRM is sufficiently flexible to allow the design performance measure that drives P[F], and hence P[D]O, to be selected based on the intended goal. Furthermore, the essential information that must be known to quantify optimum risk is defined. This allows users to determine what information to collect for optimum risk decisions. A further benefit of the MRM is that slope angle decisions and pit shells can be ranked to select the best option, and a threshold is provided that separates acceptable from unacceptable decisions. Finally, the workflow and information required to determine optimum risk are presented.

The features of smelting slags from South African prehistoric sites and of related cinder material are described. Chemical analyses of twelve slag samples found in the Transvaal, Swaziland, and Botswana are reported and discussed. An attempt is made to establish a relationship between these slags and the ores collected at the Early Iron Age site of Broederstroom, which date between AD 350 and AD 600. The liquidus temperatures of29 slags were determined by the use oh hot-stage microscope. The major mineral phases of 16 slags were identified by X-ray diffraction and microscopic examination. It appears that the slags investigated were formed at temperatures below 1250°C or - in some cases - at temperatures only marginally in excess of 1250°C.

The design of in-pulp adsorption vessels in the gold industry has, for the most part, been seen as a problem involving the suspension of fine particles o ore in a slurry. The need for the vessel to be designed as a mass-transfer contactor has received insufficient attention. The current series of papers addresses this need The previous paper considered the question of the scale dependence of the film transfer coefficient. This paper examines the mixing considerations that are relevant. A review of the literature and an examination of a limited set of data provide some insight into the mixing conditions needed for the dispersion of the particles of adsorbent. The mixing requirements for the suspension of the ore particles are also considered, and conclusions are drawn in regard to the design of mechanically agitated vessels for gold in-pulp adsorption circuits.

The flotation plant tailings at Kamoa Copper Mine concentrator were found to contain a high proportion of extremely fine particles. The potential issues with settling these fine solids were resolved by the use of a poly-di-allyl-di-methyl ammonium chloride (DADMAC) coagulant, Flobead DB 45 VHM, in conjunction with a standard anionic polyacrylamide flocculant. This paper outlines some of the issues encountered and how they were resolved at the Kamoa concentrator. The potential to use this process and technology at other sites is also considered

"The mining operation at Namdeb’s Southern Coastal Mine (SCM) is unique. It targets gravel layers up to 30 m below sea level, which continue to dip deeper, further west, under the Atlantic Ocean. On this storm-dominated coastline, severe water seepage into mining areas, rugged orebody footwall characteristics, and highly variable resource grades all contribute to a challenging operational environment. Namdeb has a proud history of innovation, and as the mine progresses further westwards and associated technical and economic challenges increase, this innovative culture has become essential to the future of the mine. The Theory of Constraints (ToC) has been widely used at SCM, and across the mining discipline, to focus efforts on improving overall business profitability. Through analysis of the mining processes, opportunities were identified, solutions developed, and initiatives implemented with staggering results across all three mining disciplines, i.e. stripping, load and haul, and bedrock bulking and cleaning. This paper outlines the solutions adopted and the results of the ToC analysis. IntroductionSouthern Coastal Mine (SCM) is one of three Namdeb operations located in the southwestern corner of Namibia, between the Orange River in the south, the Namib Desert to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west (Figure 1). These three geographical features set the backdrop for the world’s greatest marine diamond mining placer (Badenhorst, 2003). SCM is situated along the coastline extending from the mouth of the Orange River to Chameis Bay approximately 120 km to the north. The active mining area, called Mining Area 1 (MA1) is, however, limited to very narrow strip, 30 km in length, in the south of the licence area, close to the town of Oranjemund.Namdeb, a wholly owned subsidiary of Namdeb Holdings, is a 50/50 joint venture between De Beers and the Government of Namibia. Diamonds were first discovered along the Namibian coastline in April 1908, close to the town of Luderitz, but mining operations started in the SCM mining area only in February 1929 (Schneider, 2009). Initially all Namdeb mining operations exploited massive land-based deposits, producing nearly 40 million carats from MA1 between 1920 and 1977 (Schneider, 2009) when mining targeted onshore raised beaches west of the high water line. Since 1977 however, SCM and Namdeb have developed a unique mining method to economically extract the resource which extends westward under the Atlantic Ocean."

Effective thermal conductivities of packed beds of chromite ores by M. L. YOUNG, B.Se. (Rand), M.Sc. (Rand) (Visitor) and J. B. SEE, B.Sc. (Hons), Ph.D. (New South Wales), M.I.M., M.I.M.M. (Member) The effective thermal conductivities in stagnant air of packed beds of fines, lumps, and indurated and pre-reduced pellets of two chromite ores with different chromium-to-iron ratios were determined in the temperature range 300 to I 100°C by the heat-sink technique. Packed beds of fines, whether of the size fraction between 20 and 65 mesh, between 65 and 100 mesh, or between 100 and 150 mesh, were found to have the same values of effective thermal conductivity. For one ore, the effective thermal conductivities of packed beds of fines between 20 and 48 mesh at tem peratures above 600"C were higher than those for finer particles. This difference is explained as being due to the increase in importance of radiation heat transfer, but no definite conclusions are reached about the relative contributions of conduction and radiation heat transfer to the effective thermal conductivities of packed beds of fines between 20 and 48 mesh. Two published models were used for the theoretical prediction of values for thermal conductivities of the indurated and pre-reduced pellets as well as of lump ore. The experimental and theoretical results were in good agreement in view of the uncertainties in the assumed values of emissivity and thermal conductivity of the chromite ore.

This paper investigated the pre-concentration amenability of sovite (carbonatite) ore to enhance the grade of rare earth elements (REE) bearing minerals by rejecting calcite, and to improve total rare earth elements (TREE) recovery using gravity and magnetic separation. A high proportion of calcite affects downstream processes like leaching due to high acid consumption. Multiple flowsheets combining gravity and magnetic separation were employed to target > 60% TREEs recovery to the final concentrate and > 60% calcite rejection to the tailings. Head analysis of the feed showed the sample’s main constituents as Fe (15.61%), Ca (16.04%), SiO2 (7.13%), and lastly TREEs (1.12%). Mineralogy liberation data at 2mm top size indicated poor liberation of TREEs, with the majority of minerals displaying < 30% mass greater than 80% liberated. Grain size distribution data showed that the majority of REE minerals are fine grained and report to the < 20 μm size class. Calcite liberation mineralogy showed < 60% mass greater than 80% liberation.A combination of a single-stage shaking table with a wet high intensity magnetic separator at a magnetic intensity of 7520 G was found to be the optimum flowsheet. For a shaking table feed with P80 of 150 μm followed by tails regrind to P80 of 45 μm as feed to wet high intensity magnetic separator, the overall mass balance results showed that 60.5% TREEs are recovered to the concentrate while 63.0% calcite is rejected to the tails. Generally, regrind circuits are used to increase the degree of liberation of value minerals which are fed to flotation circuits. At the regrind circuit of the Sarcheshmeh copper complex, four ball mills are in closed circuit with their hydrocyclone clusters. In the initial design of the plant, feed and underflow percent solids, and pressure drop of the hydrocyclones were 39% and 65%, and 15psi, respectively. Over the years, due to a reduction in the feed grade from 1.17% to 0.67% and changes in the operational conditions, the feed rate to each hydrocyclone cluster has decreased from 401 to 70t/h and consequently the pressure drop, feed and underflow percent solids have reduced to 4psi, 17% and 25%, respectively. The main objective of this research was to audit the feed solids concentration and pressure drop of the hydrocyclones and make the necessary modifications based on the Plitt’s model. The results of sampling showed that water recovery to underflow was 59% which was higher than normal values. By reducing the number of operating regrind mills from 4 to 2, the feed rate to each mill increased. After this modification and taking necessary measures in the plant to implement the new operating approach, the pressure drop, feed and underflow percent solids increased to 18psi, 28% and 58%, respectively. The water recovery of the hydrocyclones underflow decreased from 59% to 12%. These changes in addition to increasing the circuit efficiency saved 1000 kWh energy and decreased ball consumption by 925 ton/year because of reduction in the number of operating ball mills. This paper focusses on the identification of operational opportunities in a 1100 tph pellet plant to reduce the specific energy consumption in its comminution circuit, which is designed to process magnetite ore and produce pellets to be used as raw material in the iron and steel industry. The assessment is carried out through a frequency analysis for three of the four processing lines of the plant, consisting of one ball mill each with an installed power of 4.5 MW and 280 tph of mill throughput design capacity. The methodology, as described in this paper, facilitates the visualisation and quantification of plant performance and provides a good first approach to prioritise alternatives for optimisation. In a pellet plant, grinding is a critical stage due to its high energy consumption and its major impact on the physical properties of the iron pellets, which quality depends to a large extent on grind size and Blaine index. From the evaluation that was performed it can be concluded that production line 2 has the lowest specific energy consumption of 15.1 kWh/t, while line 1 has the highest with an average of 16.6 kWh/t for the same type of ore. On the basis of the results and current operational practices, it is recommended to increase the average mill throughput from 240 tph to 265 tph, translating into specific energy reduction of 10%, without affecting the chemical and physical properties of the final product. The implementation of an HPGR for regrinding the magnetic concentrate is proposed to assure adequate specific surface area in case grinding coarser becomes an alternative, which would also be beneficial for the subsequent water recovery stages. Traditional fire assay dates back over 3000 years and has changed very little over that time. The only improvement is to replace the gravimetric finish with dissolution of the Precious Metal bead followed by AA or ICP analysis of the solution. The newly developed FIP A (Fast In-line Fire Assay) method allows full automation of the fire assay process from sample preparation to spark analysis of the Pb button. This results in fully quantitative analyses for Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, lr, Au and Ag in typically less than an hour after a sample is entered into the system. Detection limits are theoretically Pt 0.08 ppm, Pd 0.002 ppm, Rh 0.002 ppm, Au 0.08 ppm and Ag 0.002 ppm but in practice the lower measurable limits are about double these figures. Few opportunities have been available to present data obtained using the FIFA system as all FIFA laboratories have been in the domain of a Pt mining company which prefers to keep all Pt analytical matters confidential. However, IMP has recently participated in the round robin exercise to establish recommended values for a new series of Merensky Reef and UO-2 Layer reference materials produced by African Mineral Standards. The precision of the results was excellent being on average Pt 2.05%, Pd 1.25%, Rh 4.08% and Ru 4.94% being expressed as Relative Standard Deviation. The excellent precision is a reflection of the efficient collection of POEs in the Pb buttons and the homogeneity of the Pb buttons. However, the accuracy was not as good. The poorer accuracy is interpreted as the calibration of the spectrometer not being as good as desired due to the difficulty in acquiring a suitable range of standards with reliable recommended values for the PGEs. The most recent spectrometer was calibrated with the greatest care and produced slightly better results for Pt, Pd and Rh and slightly worse for Ru.

In this paper the authors present a walking robot dedicated to the inspection of a belt conveyor’s transportation system in an underground mine. The developed robot can independently diagnose all of the key rotating elements of the belt conveyor (pulleys, bearings, drums, gears, engines) based on vibration and acoustic signals as well as typical RGB (red, green, blue) and thermal images. The article presents key diagnostic procedures applied to real industrial data obtained during robot testing.The work was developed as part of the ‘THING–subTerranean Haptic INvestiGator’ project. The authors presented the main assumptions of the research methodology developed for the needs of technical diagnostics of conveyor elements typical of inspection work performed by mining staff. Based on industrial data, the use of algorithms for elements such as rollers, drive stations, and the conveyor belt were shown. The main assumption of the research is to develop a robot adapted to the conditions of a deep mine, capable of carrying out an autonomous inspection of mining infrastructure. The conducted tests and the developed fault detection algorithms were aimed at preparing the robot for underground tests in the operating conditions of the mine.
