Several rate models for the adsorption of gold cyanide from aqueous solution onto activated carbon are given in the literature. The purpose of this study is to critically examine their ability to simulate the adsorption process over a wide range of conditions. An account is given of a comprehensive set of experimental work on the kinetics of gold adsorption onto a coconut shell- based activated carbon. Equilibrium isotherms were also determined. It is concluded that the homogeneous surface-diffusion model fits the experimental data reasonably well and provides a good balance between simplicity and descriptive accuracy. The model contains two parameters: the extra-particle mass-transfer coefficient and an effective intraparticle surface-diffusion coefficient. Both can be evaluated readily from simple adsorption experiments.

Practical mining aspects should be considered when conducting pillar designs for bord-and-pillar layouts. The current methodology for pillar design will result in increasing pillar sizes with depth. This affects the extraction ratio and will result in onerous ventilation requirements when cutting large pillars. A holistic approach, including all mining engineering requirements, is required to ensure that the rock engineering designs are optimized to ensure efficient mining operations and sustainable production. Bord widths should not only be a function of the rock mass ratings, but should also be selected to fit the specifications of the mechanized equipment. The use of a ‘squat pillar’ formula for hard rock is discussed in the paper and the formula based on the exponents of the Hedley and Grant pillar formula, is explored. The effect of abutments and geological losses on average pillar stress is also explored. These factors must be considered when designing layouts at increasing depths.

Iron, in the form of steel and stainless steel, is the most commonly used metal in the world. Plain steels corrode and oxidize easily, while stainless steels exhibit improved corrosion and oxidation resistance. It has been found that rare earth metal (REM) additions, such as cerium and erbium, result in the improvement of the abovementioned properties in iron-containing compounds. Gadolinium is a REM, however, there is very little information available on the influence of gadolinium on the microstructure and mechanical properties of iron-containing compounds. Thus, the purpose of this research project was to determine the influence of gadolinium additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of mild steel and 316 stainless steel. Ten alloys were produced for the purposes of this research. Five of the alloys had a base composition of mild steel while the remaining five had base composition of 316 stainless steel. The alloys for each of the base composition contained gadolinium additions of 0.1, 0.5, 1.2, and 5 weight per cent. The as-cast and the cold-rolled alloys were analysed. The alloys responded well to the cold-rolling with the exception of the 5 weight per cent gadolinium mild steel and stainless steel alloys. These alloys were extremely brittle and underwent a significant amount of cracking during the cold rolling process. A microstructural analysis of the alloys was conducted using a light optical microscope, while the chemical analysis of the alloys was conducted using energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The resulting microstructures and EDS analyses revealed that the gadolinium displayed minimal solubility in the ferrite matrix of the mild steel alloys and minimal solubility in the austenite matrix of the stainless steel alloys. Instead the gadolinium formed as an interdendritic secondary phase in both alloys. EDS analysis revealed that the secondary phase in both alloys was gadolinium-rich. Vickers microhardness tests conducted on both alloys revealed that the alloys were composite-like, with a hard, brittle gadolinium-containing compound dispersed throughout a softer, more ductile matrix. The corrosion resistance of the alloys was determined through potentiodynamic anodic polarization tests. Two solutions were used for the corrosion rate tests: a 0.5 weight per cent NaC1 solution and a 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. The results from the mild steel alloys revealed that in both the solutions, the corrosion potentials and the corrosion resistance of the alloys increased with increasing gadolinium concentration up to 1 weight per cent. The corrosion rate test results from the stainless steel alloys revealed that the passivation current density and corrosion resistance of the alloys increased with increasing gadolinium concentration in both solutions. The oxidation resistances of the mild steel and stainless steel alloys were determined through the use of a Netzstch Simultaneous Thermal Analyser. For both the mild steel and the stainless steel alloys, it was found that the oxidation resistance of the alloys increased as the concentration of gadolinium increased when compared to the as-received mild steel and stainless steel samples. This could be due to a strongly adhering gadolinium oxide scale that formed on the surface of the alloys and resulted in the protection of the mild steel and the stainless steel.

Electrokinetic dewatering of kimberlite slime under constant direct curents of 0,5 to 2 A and dewatering under constant applied potentia Is of 16,5 to 46,5 V are considered. The combined efects of electrophoresis and the addition of 8,3 x 10-3 M Mg2+ ions on the one hand, and 1 to 10 p.p.m. of the anionic polyacrylamide flocculant Praestol 2935 on the other, were investigated in a 3-litre Perspex electrophoretic cel. .The electro-osmotic dewatering experiments were conducted in a 3-litre Perspex electro-osmotic cel at various electrode spacings, as well as with a moving anode (top electrode). During electrophoretic dewatering, the zeta potential of the kimberlite particles did not change significantly, whereas the pH and temperature showed marked increases with time. The addition of Praestol 2935 enhanced the setling of the sludge bed owing to the additional effect of flocculation. The addition of electrolyte Mg (CIO4)2 retarded the separation process, partly as a result of gel formation in the slurry. During the electro-osmotic experiments, the rate of dewatering was found to be approximately proportional to the applied constant direct current, and to be independent of the electrode spacing. In general, electro-osmotic dewatering seemed to be more energy-efficient than electrophoretic dewatering.

A method is proposed to estimate the gold content of the ore in the size intervals during size reduction. The method uses the population balance model to trace the gold deportment through the size fractions and monitor the generation of liberated gold grains during the size reduction. The model is calibrated using batch grinding test results of a gold ore. During the period October 2003 to June 2004, a containerized optical sorting pilot plant was operated at Kloof Gold Mine on a waste rock dump. In this paper, we describe the test work and its results leading to the decision to operate this pilot plant. This paper presents the operational data and financial figures achieved during this project, in particular, for the month of June 2004 when the plant was run at full capacity on three shifts, 24 hour operation. These results are also extrapolated and presented to show the profitability of such an operation at today?s gold price levels and cost structure.

Pressure leach autoclave circuits are employed in the leaching of ores, concentrates, mattes, alloys and intermediates for the recovery of metals into solution. Once the metals are extracted into solution, the value metals can be recovered by hydrometallurgical means such as by purification followed by electrowinning, hydrogen reduction, pyrohydrolysis, crystallization and other unit operations. In many of these integrated flowsheets the pressure leach step is pivotal to the recovery of the value metals from the host material. Furthermore, the autoclave circuit invariably is a high capital cost component of the plant and an area that is carefully scrutinized when debottlenecking and capacity increases are being considered. This paper identifies a unique proven way of increasing the capacity of existing or new exothermic pressure oxidative leach autoclave circuits by as much as two or three times.

The electrical control of three-electrode submerged-arc furnaces suffers from a number of complexities, mostly due to the nature of the furnace electrical circuit providing power to the furnace where the three electrodes are interconnected within the furnace through the molten metal bath. This gives rise to what is known as the interaction effect 2, where variations in one electrode?s current can cause comparable changes to the currents in the other electrodes, particularly in larger furnaces with low power factor. Resistance-based control of the electrode penetration has largely alleviated these problems, since the resistance encountered by each electrode is predominantly dictated by the length and conductivity of the current path from the electrode?s tip to the molten metal bath, which acts as the three-phase circuit?s floating neutral point. Hence resistance changes due to tip position or conductivity changes beneath one electrode do not affect the resistances beneath the others, effectively decoupling the control of the individual electrodes1. Although resistance-based control is therefore generally accepted as superior to current-based control for the regulation of submerged-arc furnace electrode penetration, a few furnace operators still prefer to use current control under specific furnace conditions. This paper presents the results of analysing the performance of both current and resistance-based control in typical scenarios encountered on industrial furnaces, taking into account a number of factors including electrode penetration, power distribution, efficiency and asymmetry of the electrode currents. In order to accomplish this, three typically encountered scenarios were simulated. The results obtained show that resistance control provides more benefit in all cases, however, the uneven electrode current distribution generated by resistance control when electrodes are on top stops may cause some concern if baking of the electrodes is required in this scenario.

SYNOPSIS Heart rates, oral temperatures, shovels/min and number of 3/4 ton cars/hour trammed over distances of up to 350 ft were measured in samples of 6-10 miners, engaged in tram-shovelling, at 76°, 84°, 86°, and 89°F wet bulb temperatures in stopes in a mine. From the results it has been concluded that a man with an 'average' maximum oxygen intake capacity of about 2. 8 litres/min should be able to work: at 6 shovels/min, or 30 cars/shift per two men, at 76°-84°F; at 5 shovels/min, or 27 cars/shift per two men, at 86°F; and at 4 shovels/min, or 24 cars/shift per two men, at 89°F wet bulb air temperatures. INTRODUCTION A number of gold mines in South Africa still use tram-shovelling extensively. In this method of rock removal from the face of the stope, Bantu mine workers load rock into cars and tram the cars to a centre gulley where they are emptied. Previous studies from this Laboratory3 have shown that tram-shovelling is one of the most arduous tasks underground. The rate of energy expenditure is relatively high, being an oxygen consumption of about 1.4 litres/min over a period of some hours. In cool air conditions the upper limit to the rate of production of the well-motivated men employed on tram-shovelling has been shown1 to depend upon their capacities for physical work of an endurance nature (as measured by their maximum oxygen intakes). However, in hot conditions the factors which set the upper limit to the rate of production are different. They are primarily the ability of the body to maintain a heat balance between the rate of heat production, due to physical work, and the hot atmosphere, so that the men do not develop excessively high body temperatures8. In order to give mine managers guidance on the 'optimum' rate of production of Bantu mine workers engaged upon tram-shovelling under different temperature conditions underground a study was carried out in a mine. The number of shovels per minute and cars per hour were recorded and heart rates and oral temperatures were measured throughout the duration of the shift on samples of 6-10 Bantu mine workers in different air conditions. The results of the study are recorded in this paper and conclusions are drawn as to the number of shovels per minute and cars per hour which Bantu mine workers of 'average' maximum oxygen intake capacity should be able to produce at wet bulb air temperatures of between 76° and 89°F without either excessive fatigue or danger of heat illness.

Minera La Parreña, S.A. de C.V., Milpillas operation is an underground mine designed to process 8 352 tons of ore per day for the recovery of copper through crushing, heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning facilities. In order to optimize copper recovery during leaching, the ore is crushed to 13 mm and subjected to primary sampling every 15 minutes for metallurgical accounting. At the same particle size, primary sample goes to secondary sampling and then, the secondary sample is crushed to 2 mm before tertiary sampling. The tertiary sample is sent to laboratory where a final sample is obtained and pulverized to 106 microns for copper assay. This paper shows a review of sampling strategy focused on minimizing or eliminating sampling errors and an experiment designed to determine copper head grade profile as well as the best sampling frequency.

Process and steel chemistry differences in hot rolled Al-killed low carbon strip steel between the hot charge route (HCR) as practised in a compact strip production (CSP) plant and the conventional cold charge route (CCR) have been studied. This was done with reference to differences in reheating practice, hot rolling practice and steel chemistry through emphasis on the effects of solubility and reprecipitation of AlN in the two process/product combinations and its effect on ferrite grain size development. An earlier modelling study on the evolution of the austenite grain size in both of the above hot rolling processes has also now been extended to include an estimate of the possible effects of retained strain after the last finishing pass on the ferrite grain size. As part of this study the equilibrium solubility trends of AlN in a number of boron-free low carbon Al-killed strip steels with low and high sulphur content from the two respective processes was investigated by the thermoelectric power (TEP) technique and differences in the effects through the derived solubility equation of Log[Al][N]=2.6?9710/T at typical slab reheating temperatures was demonstrated. Ferrite grain size modelling using the significantly lower Ar3 transformation temperatures generally found in hot rolled low carbon strip steel produced in the CSP plant using the HCR compared well to the larger grain size produced in the conventional CCR strip rolling plant. AngloGold Ashanti has been proactive in the field of energy management for many years. AngloGold Ashanti is a signatory to South Africa?s National Energy Accord of 2005 calling for a15% reduction in energy consumption by 2015 for the mining sector. This target also supported our internal targets that were already set. AngloGold Ashanti?s seven South African mines consume on average 440 MW. Due to the dynamics of gold mines, and the large numbers of relatively small energy efficiency initiatives and awareness campaigns made measurement and verification of energy efficiency very difficult at a macro level since some initiatives could get lost in the fluctuating load profile. This paper will discuss the methodology and process followed to quantify the impacts of the combined energy efficiency initiatives at macro level. It will quantify the energy efficiency impacts in megawatt-hours (MWh), financial, and equivalent carbon emissions (CO2e) reduction with reference to our baseline year, 2004, for the Vaal River and West Wits mine clusters.

Drilling exploration over the Wesizwe Platinum Limited?s Pilanesberg Project has identified the Merensky Reef at depths varying from 594 m to 1 552 m depth. Merensky Reef thickness varies from 0.05 m to 3.63 m and contains PGE(4) mineralization above a cut-off grade of 1.0 g/t over intersection widths of 0.95 m to 2.63 m. Four distinct facies types have been identified over the property, viz.1) Normal Merensky Reef, generally 1.2 m thick, bounded by thin top and basal chromitite layers and composed of upper feldspathic pyroxenite and lower feldspathic olivine pegmatoids containing base metal sulphide mineralization overlying poikilitic anorthosites. 2) Single chromitite Merensky Reef, generally0.15 m thick and usually devoid of internal silicate material, overlying variable stratigraphy containing significant base metal sulphide mineralization. 3) Detached Merensky Reef, generally1.0 m thick, bounded by thin top and basal chromitite layers and composed of feldspathic pyroxenite or pyroxenite containing base metal sulphide mineralization overlying Merensky Pyroxenite. 4) Normal footwall Merensky Reef, generally 1.8 m thick, bounded by thin top and basal chromitite layers and composed of feldspathic pyroxenite containing base metal sulphide mineralization overlying norites also containing significant base metal sulphide mineralization. The PGE(4) content?s (g/m2) distribution for the global intersection data appears to be lognormal, and conversion to lognormal space produces a near normal distribution which could be interpreted as a compound lognormal distribution. The mean PGE(4) contents estimated by these three different distributions are the same, and thus do not impact on the contained metal. Data for the Normal Merensky Reef facies type are sufficient to indicate that a normal distribution is followed for this facies type, and therefore does not need to be transformed to log space for estimation of the mean and the 90% confidence limits. A global evaluation based on all of the data is compared with a facies-weighted evaluation. The latter method is noted to provide a better definition of the associated estimation errors and thus potential classification of Mineral Resources. A valuation of $20.95 for Inferred and $41.90 for Indicated PGE(4) ounces is applied to both of the evaluations and compared. The global evaluation is considered to over-value the project by approximately 40%, thus indicating that valuations based on global summary sampling data that have a compound distribution may be materially flawed, and that cognizance of the underlying geology is crucial for unbiased valuation.

A project was funded by the Australian coal industry to investigate the mechanisms that might lead to sample bias when using cross-belt cutters, in order to help coal industry personnel to make better decisions about the purchase, maintenance and operation. It concentrated on DEM modelling of skew cutters. These are set at an angle to the belt with the intention of minimizing disturbance to the non-sampled material. Two bias mechanisms are likely to cause bias for cross-belt cutters. Waves of material are bulldozed off the belt by the upstream side of the body of square cutters and material is thrown by the leading edges of cutter blades for all types of cross-belt cutters. These mechanisms cause some parts of the load of material on a belt to be over-represented. The effects of these mechanisms cannot be made to be negligible, so cross-belt samplers cannot be trusted to produce unbiased samples, especially for segregated streams of material. However, it is possible to give a bound on the maximum likely bias. The grades of two portions of the stream can be estimated by stopping the belt and shovelling off 1/3 of the cross-section of the load on the belt into a container, concentrating on the final side of the belt and the top of the load. The remaining material should be put into another container and the difference in grade determined. The maximum likely bias is typically about 10% of this difference. For a cross-belt cutter, having an extraction ratio near to 100% is not a reliable indication that the cutter has little or no bias. Some bias mechanisms affecting cross-belt sample cutters make sample mass too high and some make it too low, so an extraction ratio near 100% can occur if two bias mechanisms are both active. The complexity of metallurgical processes in the non-ferrous metals industry. especially changes in the process conditions in combination with a diversity of metal processing furnaces, requires a precise knowledge of the system for the selection of refractory products. However, particular importance is still focused on the specific refractory consumption being as low as possible. The addition of recycling material with a high amount of impurities and the increase of low-grade ore concentrates used in the base-metals industry also entails a significant change of slag chemistries, process temperatures, etc., which influence the performance of already approved linings. This acknowledgement of process changes with decreased brick lifetimes provided the motivation for RHI AG to develop high-performance refractory bricks especially for non-ferrous metals applications. The internal laboratory tests with fayalitic slag showed very promising results compared with our approved magnesia-chromite bricks for this application. In order to identify suitable refractory products and to improve the life of the refractory lining, innovative product development has to be undertaken. In addition, the practical corrosion testing methods and facilities available within the RHI Technology Center, such as the induction furnace and the rotary kiln test equipment, allows the best possible understanding of brick wear at a laboratory scale. Based on the results of the test work, the optimal refractory solution can be recommended for a field trial at the customer?s site.

Underground observations in a coal mine have indicated failure oft he immediate roof above the bords. Careful observations and photographic recording of occurrences of these roof failures, termed ?roof guttering?, have been made. The occurrence of guttering results directly in roof instability, and indirectly, due to the interaction of the guttering with natural planes of weaknesses in the immediate roof rock. In this paper, relevant observations of roof guttering, possible mechanisms of formation of roof gutters, laboratory testing for determination of material strength and deformation properties, and numerical analyses to explain underground observations are described. Mapping of roof failures showed that these took place mainly towards the centre of the roadways. Roof guttering was observed often to occur violently and with little warning. Occurrence of roof guttering has a negative impact on production?some panels are abandoned, production times are increased and safety of workers is compromised. The numerical stress analyses showed that, although none of the constitutive behaviour criteria used predicted the observed underground failures correctly, the extension strain criterion gave the best agreement.

Due to environmental limitations and the scarcity of freshwater, flotation using seawater or desalinated seawater as process water becomes more common for mining operations. On the other hand, seawater has been reported to affect the flotation behavior of sulfide minerals. Few reports are available on influence of pyrite depression, recycled seawater and lime consumption on flotation by using seawater. In this study, the flotation tests were performed using ore sample to investigate the effect of pH with seawater and process water used in plant on the flotation behavior in a laboratory-scale flotation cell and a pilot plant-scale. The results of laboratory scale flotation indicated that copper and molybdenum flotation kinetics decreased with increasing pH. Furthermore, the iron (mainly pyrite) recovery decreased with increasing pH. The pilot plant-scale flotation test showed that water with a higher concentration of magnesium and calcium (plant processes water) consumed a higher amount of lime. Because of low lime consumption and high copper and molybdenum recovery and grade, pH 8 is suitable compared with pH 8.5 for flotation. Over many decades, numerous feasibility studies have demonstrated, that the production of sulphuric acid remains the most viable option of sulphur recovery from smelter off gas and abatement of SO2 emissions to the atmosphere. This is particularly more pronounced as smaller but more concentrated off-gas flows are to be treated from smelters, and enhanced sulphuric acid processes become available. Off-gas handling systems represent a significant capital and operating cost burden to the metallurgical operation. Modern pyrometallurgical smelter processes for sulphide ores based on the use of oxygen-enriched air, produce relatively small off-gas flows with high SO2 concentrations in the smelter gas of 30?60%-vol. of SO2. This is a prerequisite for substantial cost reductions in the smelter off-gas handling and treatment system. As an alternative to sulphuric acid production, numerous scrubbing concepts with alkali or dual-alkali combinations as well as organic absorbents have been proposed. Also the reduction of the SO2 to elemental sulphur has frequently been studied. Very few of those alternative processes have been built in industrial scale, but all were generally characterized by none-sustainable operation due to cost reasons, problems with issues related to chemicals used and by-products or poor availability. Thus the traditional concept of converting the SO2 to sulphuric acid is most common, although regarded as uneconomic, but is at least a proven, environmentally sustainable and reliable way of sulphur gas processing. With the high acid price levels these days, operating companies are even able to generate significant revenue with their otherwise ?fatal? acid. Even though smelter gas is available at high SO2 concentrations, in a conventional acid plant one would add large amounts of air to dilute the gas down to a suitable concentration of 12?13 (14) %-vol. SO2. Dealing with higher SO2 concentrations in smelter acid plants is not feasible, as the gas exit temperature of the catalytic oxidation step would exceed the allowable limit for the catalyst. Hence those conventional acid plants are characterized by the use of large equipment, i.e. high capital cost, high energy consumption and limited flexibility. The newly developed LUREC® process can handle off-gas with significantly higher gas concentrations, even in excess of 25%-vol. SO2. It is entirely based on well-proven equipment and unit operations. The first industrial application, operating with 16?18%-vol. SO2 will be presented in this paper, along with the fundamentals of the process. It will be demonstrated that the process requires inherently lower capital cost, fewer operating costs, and offers better energy recovery and lower emissions as compared to conventional design. While most existing smelter acid plants would have some built-in spare capacity, any significant increase of smelter capacity, say of 30%, can basically not be accommodated without installing an additional parallel new acid plant unit. An add-on LUREC® module can remove any such restriction, while simultaneously debottlenecking the existing acid plant. The paper also discusses the present status of the add-on technology for smelter acid plant expansions with respect to technical boundary conditions of different process alternatives as well as economic and environmental aspects. Application of the LUREC® process to modern smelter acid plants operating with high SO2 gas concentration, will lead to a substantial reduction of the specific size of the gas processing equipment and equivalent savings in capital and operating cost. The LUREC® process is patented worldwide by OUTOTEC.

"Face mapping is a simple but invaluable means of geological and geotechnical data acquisition whereby intact rock properties, rock mass properties, discontinuity properties, and structural orientation can be assessed. Although traditionally done via direct contact with the mapping face through techniques such as line mapping or window mapping, remote face mapping using various digital techniques has become increasingly popular in recent years. Sishen is a large open pit mining operation requiring a comprehensive geotechnical data-set to evaluate pit wall design and stability with the necessary level of confidence. Geotechnical borehole data, face mapping data, geotechnical laboratory testing data, and implicit structural models provide the main sources of this information. Although a large geotechnical borehole database has always been maintained at the mine, face mapping has in the past been restricted to sporadic and isolated stability assessments. In 2013 the mine acquired a terrestrial laser scanner with the resolution, photographic capabilities, and software required to carry out geotechnical face mapping. A face mapping procedure was set up based on accepted face mapping methods, the data requirements of the mine, and capabilities of the laser scanner system. Mapping data obtained from the scans was integrated into the Acquire geological data management system, a purpose-designed structured query language (SQL) database system used for storing the mine’s geotechnical data. Within the geotechnical design process, having face mapping data available has improved confidence in the properties of the rock mass and structural environment, allowing for better definition of geotechnical design sectors. Overall, the face mapping and geotechnical analysis features of the terrestrial laser scanner in use make it an invaluable geotechnical data capture tool, provided a system is in place to store mapping data in a manner that allows for meaningful rock mass and structural information to be produced. IntroductionFundamental to the geotechnical design process is the acquisition of a reliable and complete geotechnical data-set. Geotechnical data acquisition will typically commence during the early stages of a project and continue well into the operational life of the mine, with the data confidence progressively increasing as the amount of data captured increases. Sishen mine currently bases all open pit geotechnical designs and geotechnical risk assessment on geotechnical borehole data in conjunction with interpreted structural models. Boreholes are logged and the data is captured in an ongoing process. This process forms the initial step in the geotechnical design and risk assessment process whereby the raw data is used to classify the strength properties for each lithology, provide inputs for geotechnical block models, and ultimately provide the inputs for slope design analyses. To date, borehole data has provided the only largescale, organized data-set for input into geotechnical analyses at Sishen. Although borehole data is the best and most comprehensive form of geotechnical data, there are some shortfalls that can be addressed by other data collection methods. Sperrylite (PtAs₂) comprises about 21% of the platinum group minerals (PGMs) in the Platreef ore and regularly reports to the tailings due to its poor floatability. Hence, improving its recovery will be of great economic value to the South African PGM industry. The reasons for its poor floatability are not yet clear. This paper seeks to understand the interactions occurring between PtAs₂ and common thiol collectors, viz. potassium normal butyl xanthate (PNBX), sodium normal dibutyl dithiophosphate (SNBDTP) and sodium normal mono butyl dithiocarbamate (SNBDTC). By understanding its interactions with these collectors, it is hypothesised that it will be possible to suggest ligands that may help improve the floatability of sperrylite. Mineral-collector interactions were studied by determining the molar energy of interaction using isothermal titration calorimetry and electrochemical techniques. The hydrophobicity of the mineral before and after adsorption of the collectors was determined by heat of immersion and its flotation response determined by microflotation tests. Microflotation tests using synthetic sperrylite at pH 9 showed low collectorless recovery of 34.8% and after adding the equivalent of one pseudo-monolayer of the PNBX collector, the recovery of 32.5% was obtained. Moreover, the addition of up to three pseudo-monolayers coverage of PNBX did not result in any increase in flotation recovery. A small recovery improvement was noted when synthetic plant water with the ionic strength of 0.0484 mol/L was used, but this did not hold for all collectors, with SNBDTP exhibiting higher recoveries in distilled water.
