Splaine, in opening the discussion on Mr Perlman's paper, asked whether the model, as fitted by data up to 1963, predicted the rise in the price of copper in 1967, and whether the model could be used to capitalize on short-term price fluctuations.Answering the second question first, Mr Perlman said that the horizon used is six months to one year. In the very short term the activities of speculators obscured the effect of the fundamental econometric variables. This effect, however, was removed if one moved to a longer term, say, quarterly. In 1963 the model had predicted a price rise in 1964 and 1965 and a drop in price in 1966. The rise in 1967 had been caused by a strike, and imponderables such as large strikes were difficult to include in the model since they were unpredictable. Model simulation can be used to show the effect of strikes on price and the effect of small strikes is small.Mr B. R. van Rooyen said that because models are both calibrated and tested on historical data a bias was introduced which gave rise to an overoptimistic estimate of the accuracy of the forecasts. To this Mr Perlman replied that there seemed to be no alternative to the use of historical data for calibrating and testing models, and thus little hope of avoiding the bias. A second point made by Mr. van Rooyen was that manage¬ment tended to be suspicious of complex models and that frequently more heuristic models were sufficiently accurate and preferable for investment decisions. He added that if management were not involved in the model building the econometrician might easily go astray, Mr Perlman replied that symbiosis between data analysts and users of the model was essential and that the experience of the practitioner must be reflected in the model.Mr M. R. Fuller-Good remarked that a clear understanding of future price trends was essential for effective capital planning, and asked, first, how one went from the compiled data on supply and demand to the determination of their effect on price, record, whether necessary data, for example, capacities, could be obtained timeously, and, third, when strikes restricted supply, whether stockpiling by consumers induced large price fluctuations."

Automation in mining requires accurate maps of road networks on site. Because roads on open-cut mines are dynamic in nature and continuously changing, manually updating road maps is tedious and error-prone. This paper investigates the possibility of automatically deriving an accurate representation of the road network using GPS data available from haul trucks operating on site. We present an overview of approaches proposed in literature and test the performance of publicly available methods on GPS data collected from trucks operating on site. Based on shortcomings seen in all tested algorithms, a post-processing step is developed which geometrically analyses the created road map for artefacts typical of free-drive areas on mine sites and significantly improves the quality of the final road network graph.

The results of development of technologies for flotation concentration of two types of complex beryllium ores are presented: beryllium-fluorite in apocarbonate metasomatites (Type I) and rare-earthberyllium in feldspar metasomatites (Type II). The researched samples of Type I ores contain a mineral complex that is difficult to separate by fatty acid flotation, including phenakite, bertrandite, fluorite, and carbonate minerals. The ores are characterised by an increased content of fluorite and carbonates. The sample of Type II ore contains such rare-earth minerals as bastnesite and orthite, and a beryllium mineral - cleiophane. The size of individualised grains of cleiophane does not exceed 0.04 mm, which significantly limits the possibility of extracting the mineral into the enrichment concentrates. For the Type I ores, a technological process for the extraction of fluorite using a phosphorus-containing reagent from the class of dialkylphenyl polyethylene glycol esters of phosphoric acid (DAPEGEPhA) has been developed. The use of DAPEGEPhA enables the production of a high-grade fluorite concentrate (95% CaF2). The production of commodity phenakite-bertrandite high-grade (10% BeO) flotation concentrate from the fluorite flotation tailings with using a fatty acid collector is based on binding calcium in the flotation pulp using soda, sodium hydroxide and sodium tripolyphosphate. The use of a combined collector based on fatty acids and DAPEGEPhA made it possible to produce a collective rare-earthberyllium- lithium concentrate with high REE extraction (88%) from the Type II ores. This paper provides a review on coloured gold, platinum, andpalladium intermetallic compounds, and discusses the models thatwere developed to obtain these materials. These compounds have acrystal structure of high symmetry, such as the CaF2or CsClstructures, ensuring distinct electron band structures. Variousexamples of coloured gold, platinum, and palladium intermetalliccompounds are provided. More in-depth discussion is provided on thepurple gold (AuAl2) and yellow platinum-aluminium (PtAl2)compounds with CaF2structure, as well as the purplish-pinkpalladium-indium (PdIn) compound with CsCl structure. Precious metal intermetallic compounds are used in jewellery andprovide a new dimension to design. Some of these compounds havealso found use as barrier coatings on turbine blades for jet engines,and more recently, research has been conducted into their potentialuse as catalysts, electro-catalysts, sensors, capacitors, and fordecorative coatings.

"Many mines in South Africa were inappropriately closed and left unattended during the last century. These old mines are potential sources of environmental pollution and may pose a health risk to local populations, since the surrounds contain elevated levels of toxic elements. Soil from the old Edendale lead mine property in Mamelodi Extension 11, east of Pretoria, which was suspected to be contaminated with lead, was analysed. The mine, which primarily extracted galena, was decommissioned in 1938. During this study, the old mine property and surrounds were screened for zinc and lead using a field-portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometer. The metal concentrations, which ranged from 18 to 7 300 mg/kg for zinc and from 50 to 21 000 mg/kg, for lead, were plotted together with the GPS coordinates to produce a concentration distribution map for lead and zinc. This map revealed three anomalies of unacceptably high concentrations, possibly corresponding to areas where ore had been piled or dumped to waste from the old mine. Thirty-six of the soil samples that were analysed by pXRF on site were selected and analysed in the laboratory using inductively coupled plasmaoptical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) for verification purposes. The zinc and lead concentrations obtained from the two analytical methods were compared using linear regression analysis. Excellent correlation was obtained between the results from the two methods (r2 = 0.99 for zinc and r2 = 0.95 for lead). IntroductionEarly economic development in South Africa was based mainly on mining. However, these activities left a legacy of approximately 6 000 improperly closed mines scattered throughout the country (SAI, 2009; van Schie, 2012). Due to their proximity to settlements, these abandoned mines may pose a potential health risk to humans and an environmental hazard. Mining activities generate large amounts of waste, mostly in the form of overburden and process tailings, which often contain high concentrations of toxic elements. Bioavailable toxic elements can contaminate crops growing in the polluted area (Kala, 2010; Marwa, Meharg, and Rice, 2012) or eventually migrate and detrimentally affect the groundwater (Rösner and van Schalkwyk, 2000). Moreover, sulfides accumulated in mine waste generate acid minewater (Rösner and van Schalkwyk 2000). Unfortunately, owners of mines, closed before the promulgation of the Minerals Act more than twenty years ago (Act 50 of 1991), avoided the compulsory rehabilitation of the environment enforced by this legislation. Toxic elements, such as lead, which were confined within ores, may become exposed through mining and are therefore more easily mobilized within the environment. Elements essential to human and plant metabolism, such as zinc, when exposed by mining activities, may become hazardous due to elevated concentrations (Aslibekan and Moles, 2003; Wuana and Okiemen, 2011). Humans exposed to potentially toxic metals may experience harmful effects as discussed elsewhere (Nriagu and Pacynar, 1988; Wayne and Ming-Ho, 2005)."

"In open pit dozer bulk push operations, the material left resting against the highwall after blasting poses an issue. This is because dozers cannot physically get in behind the waste to begin the bulk pushing process. Instead, an excavator can be used to side-cast this waste for the dozers to access. An alternative technique is to have the dozers ‘side-cut’ the material, which involves the dozers running parallel to the wall, digging out the material, and eventually rotating their blades to begin bulk pushing. Industry practices suggest the latter technique is less productive and economical than using an excavator. However, such excavator sidecasting ‘economic viability’ assumes that smaller/ancillary type excavators are used (i.e. less than 23 m3 bucket capacity). So, what happens if some mine sites are restricted to using relatively larger excavators (> 23 m3 bucket) that are preferred for higher priority digging tasks? When can they avoid using their excavator? This paper explores multiple scenarios that have been designed and developed to simulate data results, which identify conditions in which the dozer side-cutting technique becomes more economically viable than excavator side-casting in terms of decreased unit cost per loose cubic metre. IntroductionOptimizing the cost of waste removal operations is important for the profitability of opencast coal mines. In the past decade, dozer bulk pushing has emerged and taken over from traditional waste removal operations such as dragline and truck-and-shovel methods at various sites around the world (Beatty, 1994). In a typical bulk push operation, once the bench has been blasted, waste is left resting against the highwall, which can either be cleared using a loading unit or by having the dozers ‘side-cut’ the highwall.Dozers perform most effectively when slot dozing side-by-side, perpendicular to the highwall. However, when dozers are required to remove material off the highwall, they must push parallel to the highwall, rather than perpendicular, hence ‘side-cutting’ the material to ensure a clean face. While dozer sidecutting is possible, it has been found that the majority of mine sites use a loading unit in this situation to avoid dozer inefficiency. Other perceived issues with dozer side-cutting include higher maintenance requirements and safety risks to dozer operators working in close proximity to the highwall."

Various morphological parameters that affect the flotation recovery of sphalerite were modelled and optimized using the response surface method (RSM). The effects of roughness value, shape factor, and collector concentration were investigated using the central composite full design method. The results were evaluated by analysis of variance. The optimum roughening time was found to be 25minutes, the optimum roughness value was 2.9071 μm, and the optimum collector concentrationwas 0.001 M. Using these values, a flotation recovery of 98.01% was obtained. Similarly, in shapefactor studies, the optimum grinding time was 15 seconds, the optimum roundness value 0.7421, and the optimum collector concentration 0.0009 M, which resulted in a flotation recovery of 94.30%. The average error between the optimization results and the experimental results was estimated to be less than 6%, and the R2 values were greater than 90%. The study shows that RSM can be effectively applied in finding the economic optimum condition for obtaining maximum flotation recovery with minimum reagent consumption.

For predicting the energy consumption during the size-reduction process, the Bond approach is often used. In this work, the PFC3D discrete element method (DEM) software was employed to model the crushing behaviour of some rocks with different mechanical properties in a laboratory jaw crusher. FLAC3D software was adopted to analyze the stress distribution in the rocks. The rocks studied were modelled as granular assemblies in the shape of a sphere and/or a cube located between two jaws, and the work done by the jaws in the crusher was determined. Nine different types of rocks were studied and the energies consumed by the crusher were compared to those of the Bond comminution energy estimated from the Bond index. There is considerable difference between Bond crushing energy and work done by the jaw crusher for rocks. It appears that the Bond approach is not a suitable method for predicting single particle fracture energy done by the crusher. To verify the results obtained from DEM models, the fracture behaviour of the crushed rocks was examined and was compared to the PFC3D results. The tensile mode of fracturing is favourably modelled by the PFC3D software while the delamination mode cannot be well modelled by PFC3D software. Oebswana's Jwaneng Mine (south-central Botswana) is the richest diamond mine? in the world and has been contributing substantial revenue to Botswana since the mine started operating in 1982. The resource consists of 3 separate volcanic pipes/vents namely North, South and Centre pipes (2 additional small kimberlite bodies have also been intersected within the mining pit) which erupted through Transvaal strata and the overlying Karoo sediments -245 million years ago. Although earlier drilling and geophysical surveys suggest that the 3 pipes extend to depths greater than 1 km below the surface, the resource is only at an indicated level of confidence to a depth of 400m, and mining activities will start exploiting the inferred resource material below 400m in 2014.

In most auriferous hydrothermal deposits, gold is preferentially associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals, with higher economic gold values noted for the latter and arsenian pyrite minerals. In this paper, surface (Cryo-XPS) and solution (EDTA extraction) analysis were used to characterise pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals under different aqueous conditions involving electrokinetic study and collector interactions to better understand ways of improving the separation of pyrite and arsenopyrite. The evidence showed higher surface oxidation at solution pulp pH values in the range of 4-11 for arsenopyrite relative to pyrite. The observed highest ratio of pyrite to arsenopyrite selectivity was 1.7 at collector concentration of 50 g/t and decreased with an increase in collector concentration. Current technological advancement has increased the exploitation of deeper ore bodies using underground methods. In certain cases, the mineral deposit starts near the surface and continues deep within the earth's crust. Such deposits are best mined with both underground and surface methods. Two main techniques are used to determine the optimal transition depth from surface to underground - a disintegrated approach and an integrated approach. Both methods have limitations in their use to determine the optimal transition depth. The objective of this research is to investigate the conditions in which an integrated approach to the transition depth problem is superior to a disintegrated approach. Three binary integer linear programming models are developed for this purpose: a surface and underground model for the disintegrated instance and an integrated model. A case study is performed to validate the models, with a comparative sensitivity analysis to obtain operational insights.

Professor R. P. Plewman graduated with a B.Sc. in mining engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1943, after which he had two years of military service. Mr P. W. J. van Rensburg attended St Andrew's College in Grahamstown before proceeding to the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a B.Sc. (Eng.) degree cum laude in mining and metal. lurgy at the end of 1942 and was awarded the Chamber of Mines Scholarship and Gold Medal. Dr M. G. Atmore, Deputy Technical Director of the Anglo American Corporation of South Mrica, is also Manpower and Education Adviser to the Chamber of Mines of South Mrica and a Visiting Professor at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London. Mr D. A. Vi1joen attended Queen's College, Queenstown, and then Rhodes University, where he gained a diploma in chemistry and a B. Comm. degree. Mr B. E. Protheroe, C.Eng., obtained a degree in Physical Metallurgy at University College, Cardiff, and an M.sc. in corrosion science from Swansea University. Mr N. J. Devine holds a B.Sc. in Metallurgical Engineering and a G.DE Mining Engineering, both from the University of the Witwatersrand. Dr Oskar Steffen graduated as a civil engineer at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1961, and obtained his master's degree in 1963.

A large opencast gold mining company in Africa had just completed a feasibility study for the expansion of the operations. A traditional net present value project valuation methodology had been used that showed a very positive net present value (NPV). The project team had conducted a qualitative risk assessment that identified and logged all potential project risks and had subjectively incorporated ?risk? via the discount rate and other assumption contingencies around gold price expectations, operating parameters etc. Management requested that an independent quantitative risk modelling approach be adopted to obtain a better understanding of the impact of risk on the overall project valuation and confidence level in the final valuation. A detailed project valuation model was configured in the Carbon Modelling Technology and the stochastic modelling module used to perform the Monte Carlo simulations. Analysis of historical operational performance data relating to actual achievements versus planned and budget determined the historical variability of the underlying parameters as well as variance to budget. This was done at a detailed level for mining rates and costs, processing rate, costs and recovery, and other operational efficiency measures. External market assumptions relating to gold price, exchange rate, and inflation were modelled and the dependency between them modelled using a copula. This case study will demonstrate the approach taken to building and populating the quantitative risk model and the overall results of the Monte Carlo simulation. The final valuation demonstrated that the project had a 44 percent probability of an NPV less than zero i.e. 44 percent chance of project finance loss.

Over a million rands worth of equipment will be on display, the Electra Mining Exhibition being rated among the four or five largest in the world. The 1978 Electra Mining Exhibition was attended by 24 000 visitors. "Project Management in the Metallurgical Industry", "Mine Fires" APCOM International Conference by H. W. GLEN The 17th APCOM Conference (under the auspices of the Council for the Application of Computers and Mathematics in the Mineral Industries) was to have been held in Moscow during the last week in October. South Africans have always given enthusiastic support to the APCOM series of meetings, since their inception in 1961. The conference was held in the Republic in 1972.

All mining and milling complexes can, within limits, operate at a variety of production rates. Factors of economic importance that are affected by production rates are costs per unit production, recovery and product grade. Once the relationship between the production rate and cost is established, dynamic programming techniques can be used to define the optimum production schedule (that is, the production schedule that maximizes the present worth of the operation) for the life of the deposit. In general, assuming that the capacity and efficiency of the physical plant remain unchanged throughout the life of the deposit, the optimum production rate is not constant for the life of the deposit, but declines gradually as the deposit is being exhausted.

"Simulation is a technique for studying the operation of systems by synthetic experimentation. With digital computers it is possible to simulate even the complex production processes in gold mining. This has great potential in that it enables the investigation, analysis and comparison of mining systems to be done accurately, rapidly and at low cost. Two programs have been developed to simulate the principal underground production processes in gold mining.These are the simulation of any stope contract and the simulation of underground transport operations. The programs synthesize these mining activities from a large number of small unit operations. The stope contract program simulates rockbreaking by drilling and blasting and the cleaning of the panels by face and gully scraping. The transport program simulates the functions and movements of all vehicles running on rails on one underground level. The simulation programs provide an effective means for experimenting with mining activities."

The 10.5–12.5% chromium, titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel (FSS) plates used to fabricate coal line jumbo wagons is susceptible to undesirable chromium depletion during welding with 309L electrodes. In this work, non-stabilized FSS plates were welded using 308L welding electrodes. The objective was to weld non-stabilized FSSs using gas-shielded metal arc welding without causing sensitization. The welding process was optimized by lowering the heat input. Sensitization was assessed by rigorous etching techniques and anodic polarization scans. In addition, the welds were subjected to tensile testing, and their fracture surfaces were examined for intergranular cracking. Non-stabilized FSS plates were successfully welded using gas metal arc welding.
