In the United States, chromium has been consumed in three major markets: chemical, metallurgical, and refractory. The predominant end use for chromium in the United States is in the metallurgical market as an alloying element in the production of stainless steel. In addition to being a major stainless steel-producing country, the United States is a major world producer of chromium-containing chemicals and has used substantial amounts of chromite ore for refractory applications. Chromium use is not easily further subdivided within the chemical and refractory industries because there is insufficient publicly available information to do so; however, chromium use can be subdivided among metallurgical industry uses based on the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported shipments of stainless steel by market classification (agricultural, aircraft, automotive, etc.). It is the goal of this study to determine the distribution of U.S. chromium apparent consumption among major markets in the United States. The distribution is expressed in the form of dimensionless fractions that are computed based on documented chromium consumption by major market. The distribution of chromium among markets within the metallurgical market is computed in a similar manner. Distribution factors are first computed for the major markets, then for markets that are subdivisions of the metallurgical market. The distribution of chromium among major markets has changed substantially over the time period of analysis. The fraction of chromium consumed by the metallurgical market has increased while that of the chemical and refractory markets has declined. Within the metallurgical market, the service industry market accounts for the greatest fraction of chromium consumption followed by transportation. Electrical, machinery, and fabricated products markets account for a substantial share of the metallurgical chromium consumption.

Mechanization in low-stope panels situated in hard rock infers roof support by tensile bolting to allow free passage of trackless mining equipment in the production areas. This is in sharp contrast to conventional mining, where compressive roof supports?such as timber and grout packs?have traditionally been used, up to 1.5 metres from the production face. Bolting is a hazardous operation because material is dislodged from the roof during the drilling activity. Even with temporary roof support installed, small pieces of rock are dislodged by the percussive action of the drifter. Operations with the man situated directly under the drill, during the drilling activity, are hazardous. The only way to remove the hazard is to move the man away from the machine for as much as possible throughout the complete cycle Costs associated with safety cannot be quantified, but need to form part of the decision-making process. Machine selections based on purchase and running costs alone do not justify the investment cost of mechanized bolters. The equipment selection process needs to take into account the total cost of mining as well as the human safety impact and loss of production costs from having to re-bolt roofs in a production panel to prevent falls of ground. Labour costs in mechanized low-stope bolting are between one-quarter and half the labour costs of non-mechanized bolting. This paper reviews the mechanized bolting option versus handheld bolting from a mining process and cost perspective in a hard rock, low-stope room-and-pillar mining operation in the platinum and chrome industries.

This study examined the group differences in accident susceptibility among underground coal mine workers accounting for their personal and workplace characteristics. A logistic regression model was used for this purpose. Data were collected from five underground coal mines for a period of four years. The case study results revealed that different age and experience groups of workers bear no significant differences in their accident susceptibility; however, the workplace location and occupation groups show significant differences in their risk of injuries. It is inferred based on the logistic model results that among the three occupation groups, the face workers are more susceptible towards accidents/injuries compared to the haulage and other workers. Ongoing rockpass problems on mines within the South Africa region, prompted AngloGold Ashanti to embark on a risk assessment of major rockpasses. This commenced with the collection of relevant data to identify gaps in the available knowledge and identify existing problems. This was followed by an assessment of rockpass layouts to determine existing and potential interactions with other excavations. An initial risk assessment has been completed and the rockpasses have been ranked in terms of their risk profile. The lack of geological data and an easy and reliable method of surveying rockpasses have been identified as problem areas. Shortcoming is terms of rockpass management procedures have also been identified. Further work is required to quantify the risk in terms of probability of occurrence and consequences.

Mud rushes are hazardous occurrences that have occurred frequently in mines in South Africa, and have been the cause of numerous fatalities in the past. Mud rush incidents not associated with accidents are believed to be common occurrences that are not generally reported. Many such incidents are probably associated with the operation of chutes and box fronts. This paper describes the conditions necessary for mud rush occurrences, postulated mud rush mechanisms, and methods of combating the mud rush hazard.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Phd.(Process Engineering) degree Process modelling is an essential element in the development of advanced (model-based) process control systems, accounting for up to 80% of the cost of development. Often, models based on historic process data are the only viable option when dealing with processes that cannot be modeled cost-effectively from first principles. Despite major advances that have recently been made in the field of nonlinear process modeling, some basic idea of the dynamic behaviour of a process system is important prior to system identification. While many process systems seem unlikely to be linear, the possible nonlinear aspects of their dynamics are not necessarily supported by the data. This may have significant implications for subsequent system identification or interpretation of the data. For example, it is quite possible that an underlying nonlinear deterministic signal may be obscured by a high degree of measurement or process noise, to the extent that it may be critical in the choice of model to fit to the data. The method of surrogate data analysis has recently been proposed as a means to classify the underlying dynamics of complex systems, and in this paper the use of Fourier transform surrogates to classify process systems is explored. Defects which occur at the surface of a continuously cast slab impede the throughput of final product, because an extra stage in the process is required to grind the defects away before further processing can take place. Defect prediction and the minimization of the occurrence of defects is required. The use of two models to define the defect propagation is explained. Both models are derived using system identification techniques such as auto-regression with exogenous input(ARX). One model is used to determine the effect of manipulated variables such as casting speed and measured disturbances such as mould level on temperatures within the mould. The other isused to determine or indicate the effect of the mould temperatures on the occurrence of defects such as transversal cracks. The latter model can be used to predict when the defects will occur and the former can be used to control the occurrence of the defects. Traditionally, mineral reserves management at most underground mines in Zimbabwe focus on maintaining large mineral reserves so that the time between development and production is as long as possible. Historical data at Shabanie mine, a Zimbabwean sub-level caving underground mining operation, confirms this practice. However, the high cost of underground development means that the luxury of large buffer mineral reserves cannot be justified. Furthermore significant increases in the costs of production, exacerbated by the current unfavourable economic climate, make the wisdom of extending development workings well ahead of use questionable. Poor ground conditions at Shabanie mine, mean that some development ends have to be re-mined two or three times due to partial or complete closure between the time they are mined and the time they are utilized. In order to reduce the inordinately high support costs associated with closure of development ends a new ?just-in-time? (JIT) approach that provides development ends as and when they are needed, has been adopted. Accordingly a model to determine an appropriate ?just-in-time? rate of development has been created. The JIT development model indicated that the mine could reduce development rates from 330 m/month in 2001, to 160 m/month in 2002 and achieve savings of about 50% on annual support costs, but still assure customers of a long-term product supply. The mine accepted the model in November 2001 and began implementing it in 2002. Results of the implementation will be reviewed in 2003.

The Outokumpu steel belt sintering technology is used for manufacturing chromite pellets that are charged into smelting furnace for ferrochromium production. Hot air is blown through the moving bed of raw pellets. Direct temperature and flow measurements are difficult to do in the bed of a real scale belt sintering process. Therefore, a tested and reliable mathematical model would be a valuable help for optimising operational parameters of the process and designing new constructional improvements. The aim of this work is to present a mathematical model that calculates the gas flow and temperature distribution in the bed of pellets and the atmosphere. Computational fluid dynamics program FLUENT is used to calculate the gas flow, composition and temperature of the gas in the sintering bed during processing. Energy equation for the bed, containing the effects of evaporation of water and oxidation of carbon and iron oxide, will be added to the model to obtain the temperature of the pellets. The porous media model used for pressure drop calculations in the bed is shortly discussed. A comparison between CFD-calculations and experiments with a pilot scale batch-sintering reactor are also presented. The final model can be used as an engineering tool when developing the process and the equipment further. Different designs can be easily tested with the model and the effects of the changes to the flow pattern and temperature distribution can be studied.

Mintek has been involved in the development of bioleach technology for many years, initially for refractory gold extraction, and more recently also for base metals extraction. Mintek, in collaboration with its Australian technology partner (BacTech), is the technology provider for the Beaconsfield refractory gold bioleach plant. At present Mintek, BacTech and Peñoles are constructing a demonstration bioleach plant for copper-zinc concentrate treatment. Bioleach liquors produced in all applications have to be neutralized. In the copper-zinc case, neutralization is required for bleeding iron from the circuit and for adjusting the pH value ahead of solvent extraction. In the refractory gold bioleach circuit, neutralization is required for producing a stable iron-arsenic residue. Some of the challenges encountered in each of these neutralization applications are discussed, and examples of results obtained are presented.

Globalization creates investment opportunities for enterprises around the world. Attracting foreign investment has been a key challenge for economic growth in developing countries. Corruption, political instability, armed conflict, and other internal problems affect foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows negatively. A framework of criteria provides a basis for comparing non-commercial risk (NCR) among twenty-three mineral economies. Countries competing for foreign direct investment inflows are ranked from least to most risky. This study compares Inward FDI Performance Index (IND) with NCR ratings in developing countries and shows that risk is increasingly mitigated by means of appropriately structured insurance. Given the option for countries with similar mineral potential, investors will generally invest in the country that offers lower non-commercial risk. The thermodynamic activity of MnO was measured in MnO-CaO-MgO-SiO2 slags that are typically encountered in the production of manganese-containing stainless steels. A gas equilibration-quenching technique was employed in measuring the activities. Activities of Mn in Pt-Mn alloys were redetermined at 1600ºC, which reconfirmed earlier results of strong negative deviations. MnO activities were then measured by equilibrating slags of various compositions based on a statistical experimental design procedure with Pt-Mn alloys under controlled partial pressure of oxygen in MnO saturated platinum crucibles at 1600ºC. Activities of MnO were found to increase with increasing concentration of MnO, basicity and CaO to MgO ratio. Two multi-coefficient regression models were developed to predict the activities and activity coefficients of MnO in slags at 1600ºC. Keywords: activity, MnO, slag

The Discrete Element Method (DEM) is a model that is used to simulate the motion of the media in a grinding mill. The sum of the energy that is lost in inter-media and media-wall collisions represents the power drawn by the mill. The fact that the DEM predicts the power drawn by grinding mills over a large range of diameters has been used to show the validity of the DEM. However, the power drawn by a mill is a function only of the sum of forces of the load on the shell liners. A more accurate and detailed validation of the DEM would be to measure these forces as a function of angular position as the liner moves under the load, and to compare these measurements with predictions generated using the DEM. An experimental mill has been developed to reproduce exactly what the 2-dimensional DEM simulates. The 0,55 m diameter mill has a length of 0,023 m, which is fractionally larger than the diameter of the media used in the mill. One of the lifters in the mill has been instrumented so that the forces on the lifter can be measured as the mill rotates. The DEM simulation will be used to predict these forces. This will give experimental evidence of the validity of the DEM for modelling load behaviour in rotating grinding mills.

Longwall panels facing wind blasts have been investigated at both Newstan and Moonee Collieries in the Newcastle Coalfield under the Wind Blast Project of the School of Mining Engineering, The University of New South Wales. The fluid mechanics involved in the compression and expulsion of air during wind blasts have been defined and the overpressure and air velocity time histories utilized to determine the wind blast parameters and define the relationship between them. The characteristics of wind blasts pressure pulses in mine roadways show some similarity with transient phenomenon like air blasts from explosives and shock waves from the failure of pressurized vessels. The peak wind velocities in roadways, however, exhibit marked deviations from theoretical predictions based on compressible fluid flow and Rankine-Hugoniot relationships applied to goaf air displacement and panel geometry. Peak overpressures and wind velocities have shown a positive correlation with the areas of goaf falls, with the values peaking off for larger areas. The field investigations have helped the mine management in risk assessment and in evaluating the success of induced caving by hydrofracturing to mitigate the hazard.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of M.Sc.(Chemical Engineering) degree Chromite and talc are two major gangue minerals in platinum bearing UG2 ore processed from the Bushveld Complex in South Africa. During flotation, talc is effectively depressed by the addition of depressants. Chromite, on the other hand, is considered to be hydrophilic, its recovery is believed to follow water recovery and therefore recovered by entrainment only. In certain cases it has been shown that chromite can be activated by the reagent suite and hence is made amenable to true flotation. The aim of the work was to investigate the effect of the addition of copper sulphate as an activator and the effect of the depressant type and dosage on the recovery of chromite. The results of these experiments showed that copper sulphate, at higher dosages, activated the chromite. Low dosages of copper sulphate resulted in no chromite activation. This was observed at low depressant dosages of both IMP4 (guar gum) and KU5 (carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)). When the depressant dosages were increased, at higher copper sulphate dosages, it was observed that the activated chromite was depressed by IMP4, but that the activation was still significant with the use of KU5. The activation of the chromite is attributed to the form of the copper species present in the solution and on the mineral surfaces at pH = 9 enhancing collector adsorption and thereby increasing hydrophobicity. These species were not measured directly and it is recommended that this should be further investigated using surface mineral techniques. Keywords: flotation; depressants; chromite; copper sulphate

Mintek and BacTech have joined forces to provide the metallurgical industry with bacterial-oxidation processes for the treatment of sulphide ores. The processes are aimed at both refractory gold-bearing and base-metal concentrates. Previously, BacTech had commercially implemented the refractory gold process at the Youanmi Gold Mine in Western Australia. More recently, the process has been incorporated in the Sulphide Treatment Plant at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in Tasmania, Australia. In addition, Mintek and BacTech have recently signed an agreement with the Laizhou Gold Metallurgy Plant in China?s Shandong Province, which will see the third commercial realization of the technology for refractory gold. Development of the base-metal technology is the subject of several papers in the proceedings of this colloquium. The implementation of the refractory gold technology at Beaconsfield is discussed in detail. Some important aspects that are covered include: ?Test work, and the choice of bacterial culture ?Process design choices, and the advantages of the Mintek-BacTech process ?Inoculum build-up ?Plant commissioning ?Plant performance. Besides the Laizhou project, Mintek and BacTech are currently investigating several other commercial prospects for the technology. These include the use of the technology for a gold-copper deposit, where the production of both gold and copper is envisaged.

Input-output analysis is a major branch of quantitative economics, and is used to analyse the flow of goods and services between production sectors in a national economy. Its purpose is to determine the relative value-adding capacity of each sector. The model has also, in recent years, found increasing use in assessing the environmental and ecological impact of development projects. It has, however, never been applied to individual production facilities, such as large mines, which themselves have complex economic structures, through which there is a flow of goods and services. Conventional cost and accounting systems, as used on mines, treat production sectors as separate cost centres, and do not determine the inter-relationships between them. This can lead to incorrect conclusions on the relative value of sectors and their impact on the total economic performance of the facility. This paper explains the basic principles of input-output analysis, and presents an example of its application to a simplistic model of a mine, which is used in the absence of any real data. The paper concludes that, by forcing definition of the value adding function of each sector, input output analysis will facilitate control of inputs, or costs. This will result in optimal application of resources and exploitation of ore reserves. The authors realise the model needs to be tested on an operating mine, and hope this paper will result in an opportunity to do so. Eng (Metallurgical Engineering) degree This work was done to characterize the leaching of a uranium containing pulp processed by a South African producer to identify parameters that could be adjusted to increase the extraction of uranium in the existing circuit. Batch leach tests were used to characterize the leach properties and especially the influence of the oxidant concentration on the leaching achieved. It was found that relatively high extraction could be obtained even at room temperature by using a high liquid-to-solids ratio and that increasing the oxidant concentration significantly improved the leaching of the uranium minerals.

The exploitation of stone (trachyte) at the ?Srebro? open pit mine, located on the northern slopes of the Fru?ka Gora National Park (Serbia) central area begun in 1964. Stone exploitation in this locality does not endanger the environment in an ecological sense, does not pose a threat to plants and animals, and apart from the terrain configuration changes, it did not leave behind permanent consequences to the environment. Projects for permanent cessation of mining operations and for land reclamation and spatial arrangement were completed in these circumstances. The paper gives a short review of the condition at the open pit mine; furthermore, the key problems and basic demands are presented, together with a concept of technical and biological land reclamation and the spatial arrangement of the mining complex. The method used to salvage South Deep?s Main Shaft after it was flooded by an inrush of water at about 450 m below collar on 1 May1996 is described. The individual techniques employed in the salvage were all proven technology, but the combination in which they were applied is considered to be novel. The operation involved the following activities in order of occurrence. ?the dewatering of the shaft with submersible pumps ?the placement of a French drain on the shaft bottom muck pile ?the positioning of large diameter heavy walled draft tubes, and smaller tightening up, grout intrusion and reverse flow pipes ?the casting and curing of a structural concrete plug; the capping of the draft tubes; the intrusion of several thousand tons of cement grout into the aquifer by pressure induced reverse flow ?the sealing of the aquifer ?extensive probe drilling and sealing of the zone around the inrush point with cement and other specialized grouts ?the mining out of the plug and the re-establishment of normal sinking routines.
