Tables based on 1985 data, which were not available in time for publication of the "1985 Minerals Yearbook," are included in this chapter; corresponding tables for 1986 are not yet available. Raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1986 had an estimated value of $23.5 billion, an increase of $0.25 billion over the 1985 value. This is the fourth consecutive year that the value has increased, and except for a de- crease in 1982, the value each year has increased since 1971, or 14 out of 15 years. Industrial minerals growth slowed from a 3% increase in value in 1985 to a 1.5% increase in 1986, reflecting the slow growth in the domestic economy. The value of industrial minerals, more than three times larger than the value of metals, easily offset the less than 0.5% decline in the value of metal mine production. Although the decline was small, this decrease makes 1986 the fourth year in the past 6 years in which a drop in the value of metal mining production occurred in the United States. U.S. production continued to lag behind the growing world production. Overall, the estimated raw nonfuel mineral production rose 1% over that of 1985. Domestic mine production of ferrous metals declined as follows, in decreasing order of production: nickel, iron ore, tungsten, and molybdenum. All remaining domestic primary nickel and tungsten mines had closed down by yearend. Nonferrous metals that similarly declined included titanium, rare-earth metals, lead, silver, zinc, and magnesium. For the second consecutive year, aluminum, produced predominantly from imported bauxite, declined in production, while imports reached record-high levels. Somewhat modest gains were made in beryllium and copper. As has been the case for a number of years, gold was a bright spot in the domestic and internation-al metal mining industry. Gold production was spurred on by the increasing usage and development of heapleaching techniques that make lower grade ores, which were previously uneconomical, profitable. Additionally, various mining companies, the U.S. Mint, individual States, and a number of foreign countries began production of gold bullion and commemorative coins. Gold output in the United States increased from 2.43 million troy ounces (revised) in 1985 to about 3.73 million troy ounces in 1986, a dramatic 54% rise.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has obtained data by differential thermal analysis of the various minerals that represent the nation's resources in manganese. These data are supported by X-ray diffraction analysis, chemical analysis, mineralography, and optical mineralogy, and provide fundamental information on the response of each mineral to thermal treatment in oxidizing, reducing, and neutral atmospheres. The information can be applied advantage¬ously in the identification of manganese minerals. Its greatest potential value, however, lies in the application of the quantitative data on the reaction temperatures, rates, and products to the more efficient extraction of manganese from U.S. ores. Thermal analysis curves are presented for certain manganese minerals, namely hausmannite, bixbyite, braunite, pyrolusite, lithiophorite, cryptomelane, hollandite, manganite, rhodochrosite, and rhodonite. The original minerals and the products of their thermal decomposition were identified by X-ray diffraction analysis, supplemented by chemical analysis and mineralogical identification.

In connection with air-pollution studies, the Bureau of Mines is cooperating with the U.S. Public Health Service in investigating the use of solids for removing sulfur dioxide in concentrations of less than 0.5 percent from combustion and waste gases. Removal of sulfur dioxide at flue-gas tempera¬tures would no longer result in the cooling of scrubbed gas, which is inherent to liquid scrubbing processes used exclusively in industry today. Results are reported of extensive investigation, using metallic oxides as absorbents, adsorbents, and oxidation catalysts at 130° and 330° C. (temperatures at which flue gas may be treated in powerplant practice). The most active absorbents tested were the oxides of manganese, cobalt, copper, and alkalized alumina; 23 to 33 grams of sulfur dioxidn were removed by 100 grams of absorbent at 130° C., while scrubbing more than 90 percent of the sulfur dioxide from a simulated flue gas, and 19 to 61 grams of sulfur dioxide were removed at 330° C. A more detailed study is reported on absorption and regeneration, using manganese oxides and alkalized alumina. Adsorption of sulfur dioxide on activated carbons and molecular sieves at elevated temperatures is considerably less efficient than removal by absorption--a maximum of 7 to 8 grams of sulfur dioxide could be removed with 100 grams of adsorbent at 130° C. A potash-promoted vanadium pentoxide is effective in converting sulfur dioxide to trioxide; complete conversion in a simulated flue gas containing 0.35 percent sulfur dioxide was obtained at 365° C. Pilot-plant and cost studies are being made by the Bureau to determine the economic feasibility of removing on an industrial scale the sulfur dioxide present in gases in low concentrations.

This paper describes mining and milling methods of the American Smelting & Refining Co. at the Morning mine in the Mullan area of the Coeur d'Alene mining region in Idaho and is one of a series of Bureau of Mines reports dealing with methods and costs of mining throughout the United States. The Morning mine has been described previously in a Bureau of Mines report published in 1930,2/ and the milling methods and costs at the Morning concentrator were presented in a Bureau of Mines report published in 1932. 3/ These reports are supplemented by this publication, which presents data to show the effect of changing times and conditions on a typical medium-size mining operation during the latter part of its history, when costs were rising and production was from increasingly greater depths. The report contrasts two periods in the history of the mine-periods not too far separated in years but considerably different in economic conditions. During the first period (1939) costs of labor and materials were moderate, mining operations were just being transferred from the main shaft to deeper workings opened from the offset shaft, and the operation prospered. During the second period (12 years later) production costs had increased following the national trend in all industry, mining was from greater depths near the bottom of the ore body, and the operation was becoming unprofitable. Mining on the lower levels of the property ceased in 1953.

In Kansas, almost every oil well drilled into a limestone formation is treated with hydrochloric (muriatic) acid upon completion. This is done to increase the potential capacity of the well and thereby increase its "daily allowable" production (see p. 9), to shorten the time required to produce the recoverable oil, and to increase the quantity of oil recovered ultimately from the reservoir. The porosity and. permeability of limestone formations seldom are uniform throughout the proved area, consequently the production capacities of completed wells vary considerably. Acid treatment of wells tends to increase production capacity and to equalize potential capacity. "INTRODUCTION In the ammonium sulfate process for the production of alumina from clay,,3/ the clay is baked with amonium sulfate at about 400ºC. to form anhydrous ammonium alum and free ammonia or ammonium carbonate. The alum is leached from the baked product with water and circulating liquors and is purified by recrystallization. Aluminum hydroxide is precipitated by treating thus alum the alum the ammonia or ammonium carbonate from the baking step. Ammonium sulfate is recovered from the filtrate for reuse, and the aluminum hydroxide precipitate is calcined to produce high-purity alumina. In this process, as in other acid processes for the production of alumina, 4/ a large part of the iron in the clay is extracted. The iron tends to build up in the leach liquors and contaminate the crystals, so that its elimination is one of the most important problems in the process. A number of large clay deposits occur in the Western States. Those that have boon explored most extensively 5/contain an average of 24 to 30 percent available A12O3 and 2 to 8 percent available Fe2O3. 6/ The available Fe2O3 content of various other clays ranges from less than I percent to more than 20 percent. The available Al2O3 or Fe2O3 is usually 90 to 98 percent of the total but may be much less. In generals the iron content bears no fixed relation to the alumina content and may vary widely within a given deposit."

In initial attempts to mine taconite by conventional open-pit methods, the material tended to break into tabular blocks that were too large to be handled by conventional shovel dippers and were unsatisfactory in an ordinary crusher feed. A great amount of secondary blasting was necessary, which added considerably to the cost of mining. The Bureau of Mines and others are engaged in studies designed to contribute to the solution of taconite-mining problems. These studies concern problems related to drilling techniques and patterns, types and methods of use of explosives, and other factors relative to effecting maximum fragmentation at minimum cost. This report, is concerned with study of the application of shaped charges in drill holes, the effectiveness of shaped charges as compared to capped charges in secondary blasting, and the merits of different drilling patterns and methods of detonation of conventional-explosive charges. Fragmentation of taconite at or near the surface is controlled or strongly influenced by joint and bedding planes. Since all tests in this study were made in a jointed and bedded area, a definite conclusion as to the relative effect of a shaped charge in a drill hole, as compared to a conventional charge at greater depths and tighter ground, is precluded. However, application of shaped charges in primary blasting of taconite appears to be of no advantage. In secondary blasting of taconite, conventional, capped charges produced better breakage than shaped charges of the designs tested. Based on the results of conventional blasting practice in horizontal-, inclined-, and vertical-hole tests, no better fragmentation is obtained from blasting either horizontal or inclined holes, compared to vertical holes. Holes drilled in staggered parallel rows that intersect both series of joint planes at the greatest possible angle, give maximum breakage compared to rows paral-lel to one of the series of joint planes. Methods of detonation made little difference in breakage; but the milli-delay caps produced the best conditions for moving the broken rocks.

Advance knowledge of roof conditions can lead to improvement in roof control strategies that will reduce roof falls and ultimately will reduce injuries to mine workers. J.H. Fletcher and Company, in cooperation with West Virginia University, has been developing a system to meet these needs by collecting torque, thrust, and rotation speed data during drilling operations. Recent improvements in analysis algorithms to detect anomalies in the roof structure as well as various display enhancements for real time mapping and evaluation of roof structures have been incorporated into current Fletcher Information Display system. The unit has also been housed in an explosion-proof container to allow use in coal mine applications. Recently, the system has undergone extensive field trials in several limestone mines and one coal mine. During these trials, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health assisted Fletcher in verifying the accuracy of the roof mapping capability of the system by comparing the display information to bore hole scoping observations and drill corings. It was concluded from this assessment that the intelligent drilling system can complement scoping and core analysis to provide a more complete picture of roof strata and is capable of seeing features or conditions that are not always obvious in these more traditional methods.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the impact of the depletion allowance upon the economic availability of copper from domestic deposits. The potential long-run percentage depletion deduction, cumulated over the life of the properties, was estimated at approximately $2.5 billion for producing properties and up to $11.7 billion for nonproducers. The income transfer, in the form of higher Federal income tax payments if the allowance were repealed, was estimated at $1.5 billion for producing properties and up to $8 billion for nonproducers. The percentage depletion allowance, through its role in determining Federal income tax liability, was found to be very significant in affecting profitability. Repeal of the allowance could result in major domestic copper availability reductions at all price levels, now and in the future, as a result of reduced profit margins for current producers, and postponement of development decisions for nonproducers. It was demonstrated that a 50-percent reduction in the percentage depletion rate applicable to copper would also result in a significant decrease in profitability for nonproducing properties. For producing properties, the percentage depletion rate on copper was shown to be less significant than the income limitation that is placed upon the total amount of the depletion deduction. Repeal of the minimum Federal tax provision was shown to be significant in enhancing profitability for both producing and nonproducing deposits. The report concludes that the percentage depletion allowance operates as an important method of capital recovery and production incentive.

Although falls of roof, face and rib (or side) of coal mines were the third ranking cause of disabling accidents in 1966, the accidents from these falls resulted in the most serious injuries and accounted for approximately 50 percent of the total fatalities (I). Further breakdown of these statistics shows that 88 percent of the fatal accidents occurred within 100 feet of the working face and that 96 percent of the deaths were in bituminous mines, with only four percent taking place in anthracite workings. These figures demonstrated the need for improved reinforcement procedures in operational coal mines, and they provided ample justification for research in the area of accident prevention. The purpose of this project was to investigate the use of polymers and of related techniques to achieve rock bonding and reinforcement of coal mine structures, in order to obtain better or permanent ground support (e.g., drifts, entrees, coal and ore passes, galleries, tunnels and shafts) by the fill ing of fissures in the rock, thereby preventing or delaying the onset of serious rock degradation processes.

This publication describes mining and milling methods and costs at the Madison mine of National Lead Co., St. Louis Smelting & Refining Division, in the Fredericktown district of southeast Missouri and is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods, practices, and costs of mining and milling throughout the United States. The are bodies of the Madison mine are known for the complexity and diversity of their are minerals. Sulfides of copper, nickel, and cobalt occur in commercial quantities with lead sulfide, which is the most valuable metallic mineral in are bodies of the Bonne Terre formation in southeast Missouri. Several attempts were made by various operators to mine the complex ores and separate the sulfide minerals before 1927 when National Lead Co. became interested in the Fredericktown district. Operating then as the St. Louis Smelting & Refining Co., the company began mining and milling ores from the Madison mine in 1944 and has operated continuously since then. A recently built refinery produces copper, nickel, and cobalt metal from a concentrate containing iron sulphides and small quantities of copper, nickel, and cobalt sulphides.

This report is the 24th in a series summarizing research on coal and related investigations3 by the Bureau of Mines. The coal programs of the Bureau of Mines include a wide range of theoretical and applied studies--such as fundamental studies of coal structure and properties, the development and evaluation of new mining techniques, and work toward more effective processing and utilization of coal. The scope of these programs is indicated, in topical outline, by the table of contents. These investigations are integrated into a broad but coordinated effort to develop information on coal that will benefit the coal mining industry and the coal consumer while promoting the wise conservation and utilization of our national coal resources. Any attempt to summarize in one volume the progress in all of the program areas indicated must necessarily be limited to a brief review of developments, without detailed reporting of the data. However, while the brief discussion in each section will present only the highlights of the Bureau's work during the year, details of many of the operations or investigations described here can be found in the publications cited throughout the text. Other work, reported here for the first time, will be covered in greater detail in later publications.

The literature dealing with the electrical conductivity of solid dielectrics, including all its aspects and its relationships to other physical properties of these materials, is extensive and scattered in many books, phamphlets, and periodicals. It is believed that most of the important contributions to this field up to October 1943 have been listed and abstracted in this circular. Also included are some general references on static electricity. Methods of removing static charges are described; methods of and conditions for measurements of resistivity are discussed; equations for the calculation of resistivity are given; and methods of resistance measurements in Situ are reviewed. Data on the variations of resistivity with changing conditions as well as explanations for them have been collected, and three tables showing the resistivity of various dielectrics at different humidities are included. The appendix contains a short development of the mathematical formulation of the charging and discharging currents due to interfacial polarisation. INTRODUCTION Methods for Removing Static Electricity Of the various means employed for preventing or removing accumulations of static electricity in industrial processes, grounding is the most common and most generally effective. It is a precaution readily applied to stationary machines anti may often be utilized to good advantage to rid persons and portable equipment of an acquired charge. There are many situations, however, in which direct low-resistance grounding cannot be used, either because the charged bodies are insulators or are inaccessible, or because contact to a ground lead might give rise to a hazardous spark. If the charged body is a conductor, contact made to a neighboring conductor, even though the latter be insulated from ground and of relatively small capacitance, may also result in the occurrence of an incendive spark. In such instances, static electricity can sometimes be removed most satisfactorily by means of strong atmospheric ionization produced by radioactive material, X-rays, ultraviolet light, or A. In September 1985, the Chairman of the Transportation, Aviation and Materials Subcommittee of the House of Representatives requested that the Director of the Bureau of Mines address the issue of South Africa and critical materials dependency in testimony before the Subcommittee. Subsequent to the testimony, the Bureau has prepared a technical report focusing on the importance of South Africa and, in some cases, its neighboring countries as suppliers of six key materials. The report includes a qualitative analysis which examines the supply shortfall resulting from a potential disruption, options that are available for mitigating the impact, and their likely effectiveness, and quantitative analyses which estimate the economic impacts in the chromium and manganese markets resulting from peacetime disruption scenarios specified by the Subcommittee Chairman. The concluding section treats the role and capabilities of the Bureau of Mines in dealing with mineral supply disruptions.

Iron ore deposits in south-central Missouri have emerged as a possible resource for the rare-earth elements. The Pea Ridge Iron Mine is one such deposit. Rare-earth minerals at the Pea Ridge Iron Mine are contained in breccia pipes consisting primarily of silicon oxides and feldspars. These pipes extend up through the magnetite ore body and appear to be alterations and replacement of earlier hematite. The mineralogy of these pipes is very complex and varied, which could complicate the concentration and extraction of the rare-earth minerals. This U.S. Bureau of Mines !eport represents a study by characterization of the mineral phases to assess the amenability and development of concentration and extraction techniques. Previous characterization of rare-earth minerals has been mainly by transmitted light microscopy. This method along with reflected light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction was used to identify and characterize the rare-earth and associated minerals. The minerals identified were the major ore minerals, magnetite and hematite; the rare-earth phosphates, monazite and xenotime; the rare-earth silicate, allanite; the minor associated minerals, cassiterite, pyrite, and apatite; and the gangue minerals, feldspar, quartz, and actinolite.

Data recently released indicate substantial improvement in mineral industry performance for 1984. Business plans to increase plant and equipment spending in 1984 by 14.8 percent, according to a recent survey conducted by the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis (table 1). In contrast, capital spending by all industries declined 4.8 percent in 1983 and 2.3 percent in 1982. The latest estimate of planned expenditures for 1984 is $2.2 billion higher than the comparable estimate based on the survey conducted in late January and February 1984.1/ [ ] Of particular significance to the U.S. mineral industries are the 15.5-percent increase in capital spending planned by manufacturing in 1984 and the planned 18.6-percent increase in spending by durable goods manufacturing, where the largest increases are planned in the transportation equipment (26.4 percent) and electrical machinery sectors (23.5 percent). Capital expenditures in manufacturing declined in both 1982 and 1983.
