It is a well-known fact that usage of reverse cationic flotation in magnetite ores processing enables to improve the quality of magnetite concentrates. We designed an iron ore concentrate technology (with 70 -71 % of iron) including reverse cationic flotation in pneumo-mechanical flotators RIF (developed by RIVS Corporation, Russia) with good biodegradable etheramines as collectors for flotation of quartz. Practical application of high biodegradable flotation reagents decreases environmental impact risk of objects and enterprises of mining industrial complex. This work presents results of development of flotation technology for production of high quality ferruginous concentrates from magnetite ores of Russia and Ukraine deposits. "The separation of fine or even smaller size mineral particles with conventional methods is inefficient due to the specific properties of fines (small mass, high specific surface area, and high surface energy per unit area). Hence, the production of high-grade concentrate with high recovery is very difficult to impossible and a significant share of mineral values is lost to the tailings. The aim of the current research is to investigate the possibility to efficiently separate value minerals from gangue of fine particle size. The objective of the current work is to develop separation schemes of fine mineral particles by combining an initial stage of particles agglomeration with the use of collectors (hydrophobic agglomeration) with a subsequent conventional separation method. In the current research, magnesite was used as mineral value to be separated: a) from quartz, and b) from mineral mixture (serpentine, ilmenite, and olivine). In each case, tests on single minerals and artificial mixtures were carried out. After hydrophobic agglomeration, the separation of magnesite from quartz was achieved by settling; in the second case (gangue: serpentine, ilmenite, and olivine), magnetic separation of the co-agglomerated gangue was applied. In both cases, the results of the preliminary tests on single minerals suggest that the separation of mineral value is feasible and efficient. These findings were also confirmed from the results of the tests on artificial mixtures of magnesite and gangue, either quartz only or mineral mixture. Both separation schemes provided with magnesite concentrates of commercial grade (95% magnesite) with high recovery. INTRODUCTION The generation of fine particles is inevitable in many operations of mineral commodities processing. Especially in the case of low-grade ores, the mineral value is finely disseminated in the ore, and considerable liberation occurs at a fine size range. Although there is not a uniform classification system with respect to mineral particles size, fines are usually characterized the particles with a size range of -100µm+20µm, very fines those of -20µm+5µm, ultra fines of -5µm+1µm, and colloids smaller than 1µm (Sivamohan, 1990)."

"Different types of impact crushers use the physical effect of impact to crush rocks. The rocks can vary from soft to hard and from ductile to brittle but they should never be abrasive. Since the principles of impact crushing of larger rocks are hardly investigated these crushers are still sized rather by empirical than by scientific approaches.In order to investigate the principles of comminution by impact of large rocks a test rotor was developed and rocks of different dimensions were tested. The integrated measuring devices of the rotor enable the recording of impact forces and of absorbed impact energy with high resolution during the contact time.Since impact crushers stress the rock particles with a defined velocity the main crushing properties are gained as a function of the applied velocity and the particle size of the rock: likelihood of breakage, contact time, maximum crushing force, mass specific crushing work, surface related crushing ratio and crushed fragment shape distribution."

"Copper(II) can be recovered or removed from acidic copper sulfate solutions as cuprite or metallic copper powder by reduction with carbohydrates (van der Weijden et al., 2001, 2002). In order to make this process suitable for a commercial scale pipe reactor, process conditions and reactor configuration need to guarantee proper throughput of the dilute suspension. This is where crystal engineering also comes into view. Copper powder characteristics, such as size and shape of particles, influence the tendency to adhere to reactor walls and to agglomerate, which in turn influence the throughput. Furthermore, separation, drying, packaging and product quality, are dependent on the powder characteristics.In this paper the effect of both chemical and physical parameters on the shape and size of particles were systematically studied in a number of autoclave experiments. These parameters include mixing, Cu(II) concentration, pH, temperature, seeding, use of additives and reactor materials. Additionally, Monte Carlo simulations of copper growth inside a Kenics static mixer were made. Results show that the use of additives, and the use of static mixers influence particle characteristics the most."

In recent times, the transportation of minerals and their tailings has become a major concern across the world. There exists a huge demand of efficient and cost effective transportation system which poses minimum environmental damage. One of the economically and environmentally viable techniques which potentially offer a solution to the above problem includes transportation of minerals and their tailings in the slurry form through pipelines. Slurry transportation through pipelines is reported to be more beneficial in terms of cost, environmental impact, maintenance and safety when compared with other conventional modes of bulk transportation such as train, truck, barge and conveyors. The main challange associated with hydraulic transportation of slurries is to obtain a non-settled slurry and to design a pipeline system which results in the optimum energy requirement for transporting a large throughput to longer distances at a lower cost. The feasibility of hydraulic transportation of slurries through pipes mainly depends upon slurry properties and flow conditions in the pipe. Results from rheological studies exhibit the presence of shear thinning flow behaviour of minerals and their tailings in water. The flow behaviour index (n) and consistency coefficient (k) obtained from the rheological analysis are further used for the specific energy consumption and energy losses during transportation. The cost of transportation in USD per ton per 100 km and transport capacity in tons per day are calculated from the specific energy consumption to transport these slurries. The results demonstrate that the slurries can be transported to long distances (say, 100 km or more) corresponding to optimum energy consumption and dissipation rate at a substantially cheaper cost than the existing rail and road transport in India. Although we have carried out transportation studies with coal fly ash (CFA), lignite & bauxite slurries, for paucity of space, the results reported here are essentially for CFA slurries. Details of our investigations with lignite coal & bauxite will be reported seperately.

"The effect of ultrasonication on reactions at solid/liquid interfaces was investigated in two slurry systems, i.e. gold cyanidation and geopolymerisation. The kinetics of gold extraction were significantly enhanced and the cyanide consumption was reduced in the cyanidation of a pyrite concentrate using ultrasonication, probably due to the prevention of leaching passivation, the improvement of the dissolution of the gold host sulphides and the oxidation of soluble sulphides to sulphate. The effectiveness for ultrasonication was improved with the injection of oxygen and the addition of dithiophosphate through enhancing the formation of the oxidation radicals and selectively inducing cavitation bubbles directly at the sulphide interfaces. Ultrasonically enhanced cyanidation could render currently uneconomic deposits viable for extraction by improved cavitation efficiency with the aid of surfactants.Ultrasonication increased the compressive strength of the formed geopolymers through accelerating the dissolution of the Al-Si materials, strengthening the bonds at the solid particle/gel phase interfaces, enhancing the polycondensation process and improving the formation of semi-crystalline to crystalline phases. The use of power ultrasound will yield high-performance geopolymer materials."

Modification of hydrophobic part of carboxylic collector molecule is an upcoming trend for producing new reagents and changing its flotation properties such as activity, selectivity, sensitivity to hardness salts that inevitably present in the pulp liquid phase in the processing of ores containing calcium minerals. A wide range of apatite collectors ? monoalkyl ethers and monoalkylamides of dicarboxylic acids ? succinic, o-phthalic and maleinic acids have been synthesized by the addition of aliphatic alcohols and amines with various hydrocarbon radical value (from ?11 to ?16) to anhydride of the corresponding acid. Using computer modeling based on ChemBio 3D program of specialized complex Chem?ffice the calculation was carried out of charge distribution on atoms, energy parameters of molecules for investigated compounds. Calculated values of absolute hardness (?=6.75 ? 12.36) and absolute electronegativity (?= 5.67 ? 8.90) of the reagents showed that monoderivatives of dicarboxylic acids refer to the ?hard? type of bases. The degree of a charge transfer during calcium compounds formation of considered collecting agents (?N=0.009 ? 0.143) has been computed. Dissociations, micelle formation in solutions of these reagents and its hydrophobic and collecting properties were investigated in respect to apatite. Dependence of bulk, surface and collector properties on collector molecule architecture (double bond or benzene ring and non-ionogenic functional group in the structure of hydrocarbon radical) has been established. It is shown that experimentally determined dissociation constants (??a=5.16 ? 5.60 for succinic acid derivatives and ??a=3.32-3.78 for maleinic and o-phthalic acid derivatives) perfectly correspond to acidic properties predicted by computer calculations. Compounds of monoalkylderivative dicarboxilic acid have been determined optimum in composition and structure. The results of apatite flotation from apatite-nepheline ores of the Khibiny deposit (the Kola Peninsula) are presented here and show benefits of selected reagents. Spent automobile catalyst is an important secondary resource of PGMs (platinum group metals) and the recovery is significant. Various methods of recovery technology have been reported and applied in practical production, including pyro- and hydrometallurgical processes. Since the grade of PGMs in the catalysts is so low, approximately 0.5 wt. %, the present recycling technologies require high energy-consumption, it is of great significance to enrich the PGMs with some energy saving physical separation methods as a pretreatment. Automobile catalyst is usually composed of cordierite phase as a substrate and alumina phase, with PGMs, which covers the cordierite phase. We adopted the quenching pretreatment, one method of thermal shock, to generate micro-cracks between the two phases and separate the alumina phase from cordierite. Quenching was carried out by heating the catalysts in an electric furnace of different temperatures followed by rapid soaking into cold water. It was found that the phase boundary between alumina and cordierite was broken in the quenching and selective separation (detachment) of alumina from the cordierite could be achieved in the following surface grinding. The effect of quenching was checked by microscopic observation, hardness measurement, and chemical analysis. This paper figures out the stress formula of the quenching process, which is largely connected with layer thickness and temperature gradient by using an FEM (Finite Element Method) simulation and clarifies the mechanism of crack generation in the quenching process. The adsorption patterns of potassium amylxanthate on the surface of high purity malachite subjected to prior sulfidization with NaSH have been followed and elucidated. DRIFTS spectroscopy has been used to trace the associated physicochemical alterations as well as the chemical species present on the mineral surface. Varying the collector concentration from 5.10-4 to 1.10-2 mol/L has led to different degree of surface coverage of the alkyl groups and to formation of organometallic hydrophobic complexes of CuX or CuX - X2 type. The results reveal that the CuX complex formed on the malachite surface without sulfidizing agent is more unstable and prone to dissolution-precipitation phenomena. Based upon the constructed adsorption isotherms and upon the degree of statistical coverage, different zones of mineral-reagent interactions could be distinguished. They correspond respectively to the monolayer, bi-layer and tridimensional condensation domains. In each of the identified zones mono or double layer adsorption patterns of the collector are proposed leading respectively to formation of surface compounds with different degree of hydrophobicity. The results suggest that sulfidisation remains an important prerequisite in view achieving efficient flotation of the malachite from the studied copper ore.

Geopolymerisation has emerged during the last few years as an industrial and ecological approach to construction and waste management. By utilizing waste materials and their reactive properties, it is now possible to create geopolymers systems that not only mechanically durable enough to be used as construction materials but are also potential stable immobilisation systems for toxic waste. Previous studies by Van Jaarsveld et al. (1997) and Van Jaarsveld et al. (1998) have reported on the numerous applications of geopolymers in the immobilisation of toxic metals. Research into the possible utilisation of geopolymers as an encapsulation media for organic waste has however been rare. This paper therefore provides an insight into the possible utilisation of geopolymers as a binder for hazardous organic materials.

Difference between plant feed specifications in practice and design feed is a problem that most of processing plants face during operating and commissioning. This topic has led to inappropriate operating and necessitates repeating the basic tests on new feed. Gol-E-Gohar fourth concentrate line with a capacity of 2 MTPY, located in Kerman province, is the first iron concentrate plant in Iran in which High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) technology has been applied. Plant&apos;s feed consists of 30% AG mills pebbles of lines 1-3 and 70% run of mine crushed ore whose Fe=51%, Fe/FeO=2.5, S=1.7% and work index=15 kWh/t. Desired concentrate has Fe>68% and S<0.7%. After the plant construction and operation commencement, providing design feed was not possible due to the crushing unit`s not being complete, therefore the plant was fed by AG mills pebbles. For predicting optimal conditions of the plant and investigating the possibility of improving the current concentrate specifications, sampling from the new feed and laboratory and pilot tests was performed again. Studies showed that new feed has Fe=41%, Fe/FeO=3.5, work index=17 kWh/t. Results of laboratory tests with Davis tube device and pilot tests run using magnetic separators with simulating the plant`s circuit showed that with current feed, achievable recovery in industrial scale would be 75.52% which compared to plant&apos;s recovery in studied period (75.94%) shows that plant operated in optimal conditions. To improve the current concentrate specifications (Fe=66%, S=1.03%, Ferec=75.94%) and for achieving desired concentrate, samples were reground to four fractions with k100= 300, 212, 100, 45 and Davis tube tests were performed on each of the samples separately. Results showed that the fraction whose k100=212 µm or k80=200 µm has respective Fe and S grades of 68.27% and 0.681% which are consistent with the desired concentrate.

Amine collectors with different structures and length of carbon-chain have been widely used in oxide minerals flotation. In this paper, we synthesized one kind of binary amine, N-dodecylethyl- enediamine, and studied its flotation performance. From the results, we can see N-dodecylethylenediamine which has excellent frothability, is a new type of chelating surfactants. And it also has fine catchability to quartz and hematite. The recoveries of quartz and hematite increase with the augment of N-dodecylethylenediamine concentration. When the dosage of collector reaches 100g/t, the recoveries of quartz and hematite achieve 95.30% and 87.89% respectively. Meanwhile, the influence of pH on the flotation recovery of hematite is studied and test results showed that, as pH increases, the flotation recovery rises until pH=9. And the recovery reaches its maximum in alkalescence. The collector has better flotation capability to quartz than to hematite. And the maximum recovery of quartz is gained in alkaline media, which reaches 97.87%. Finally, the flotation mechanism of N-dodecylethylenediamine is discussed through the measurement of infrared spectroscopy.

Flotation of chalcopyrite and unactivated malachite with xanthates (ethylxanthate, butylxanthate, octylxanthate and dodecylxanthate) is studied in this paper. Minerals interacted with xanthates are detected by FTIR, and simulated by molecular mechanics. It shows that chalcopyrite can be floated with 4 kinds of xanthates, and unactivated malachite can?t be floated with ethylxanthate but can be floated directly with later 3 kinds of xanthates while characteristic absorption peaks of those four kinds of xanthates are all detected by FTIR on chalcopyrite and malachite surface. After simulating the interaction between xanthate and mineral, it shows that H2O and OH-can interact with chalcopyrite and malachite, and their interaction energy may be so called energy bulwark which must be overcome by collector when collector interacts on minerals; the two sulfur atoms in xanthate group interact with copper and neighbor iron atoms on chalcopyrite. It also shows that molecular mechanics results with logP of collectors can interpret the mechanism of xanthate-mineral on atom scale.

Crystalline silicon solar cells are the most important solar cells manufactured today. This will most probably remain the situation the next decade. The future silicon feedstock is most likely not reject from the production of electronic-grade silicon. There will probably be a more direct solar-grade silicon route, excluding the electronic-grade silicon "detour". Estimated global solar energy demand in 2001 required approximately 5,500 tons of silicon feedstock. This required 65,000 tons of quartz. If the trend continues, the solar energy demand in 2010 would require approximately 30,000 tons of silicon feedstock and 350,000 tons of quartz, although the need for quartz probably will be lower than this. Quartzite has been regarded as the most suitable primary raw material used in the silicon solar cell production chain. This may change as the raw material requirements for the production of metallurgical-grade silicon are most likely to change. In addition, quartz or other silica-containing minerals from other rocks may be of a higher purity or contain lesser amounts of the most harmful elements. This favours increased beneficiation of primary raw materials in the future solar silicon feedstock production chain.

Doré process is unique way to treat precious metals in the copper electrorefining plant, since it uses anode slime as a raw material. In this pyrometallurgical process, also slag is produced together with Doré metal. However, the process is never ideal, and a part of metal is always lost into the slag. By using Doré slag as raw material for simply mineral acid leaching, some of the lost elements can be extracted and recovered, thus, increasing the sustainability and keeping metals in the circular economy loop. The Doré process itself is developed to convert almost all precious metals and PGMs in the Doré metal, leaving other elements into the slag fraction. The Doré slag consist of slag formers, such as borax and silica based minerals, but contain also traces of sealing materials. In addition, the Doré slag is rich in metals present in the anode slime, such as Cu, Bi and Sb, which are not converted into the Doré metal. There are only few published applications at the precious metal plants, where conservative grinding and flotation circuits have been utilized for the enrichment of valuable metals present in the Doré slag fraction (Godbehere, P.W., 1983; Segawa, C. and Kusakabe, T., 1996). However, the present study shows an alternative approach for the recovery of metals present in the Doré slag by hydometallurgical approach. The study focus on direct mineral acid (aqua regia) leaching of metals present in the Doré slag. The initial dissolved concentrations of Cu, Bi and Sb from Doré slag in the temperature range of 30-50 °C under oxygen purging with addition of 1 vol-% of H2O2 are presented. Chemical and mineralogical analyses were performed for the raw material, leaching residue, and leaching solutions in order to ascertain the leaching behavior of the metals of Bi, Cu and Sb.

Mechanism of the action of nonpolar physically adsorbed reactants in froth flotation is under discussion in the paper. It is shown that their basic influence on flotation includes removing of the kinetics restrictions of the flotation complex formation. Experimental data and practical evidence reported in the paper sustain the proposed mechanism. There are discussed potential dependence of the kinetics of dixanthogen formation on platinum and its influence on the induction time (IT).

"Carbonate minerals are very important mineral source of extracting metal, radioactive element and rare earth elements. Furthermore,some carbonate minerals, such as calcite and dolomite, are common and important components of sediments and sedimentary rocks. Many flotation processes involve the separation of valuable minerals with carbonate minerals. So it is of great significance to the flotation theory and industrial practice to investigate the flotation behaviors of carbonate minerals. As regulators, metal ions play a major role in minerals flotation. The study of influence law of metal ions on minerals flotation is helpful to eliminate or utilize the effect of metal ions. In this study, calcite and smithsonite laboratory scale flotation, surface analysis and zeta potential determination in the presence of Fe(II) ion were performed to investigate the effect of Fe(II) on carbonate flotation. The results show that Fe(?) depresses the flotation of calcite and smithsonite. The depression effect of Fe species on calcite and calamine flotation can be improved with the increase of Fe(?) concentration. The zeta potential measurements and surface analysis show the existence of iron hydroxide products on mineral surface, which may be link to carbonate site instead of exchanging with calcium on the mineral surface. Fe species on the mineral surface inhibit the interaction between the reagents and calcite/smithsonite through the formation of surface precipitation coating on the calcite/smithsonite surface when the Fe(?) concentration is higher."

"Multimetal gold-antimony ores are complexed processing products, since they are characterized by veindisseminatedsulfide mineralization with fine-dispersed submicroscopic gold, low content and uneven distribution ofAu, which is concentrated together with iron sulfides (pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite). Such ores are classified asrefractory ones and characterized by low gold recovery rates during cyanation. A particular feature of gold-antimonydeposits is the presence of antimony in industrial concentrations therein, along with gold that significantly increasesthe value of these deposits. The main antimony mineral is antimony sulfide - antimonite (stibnite). Gold-antimonyores undergo flotation concentration with producing collective gold-containing concentrates or gold sulfide andantimony concentrates. The purpose of the work is an experimental study of the flotation separation mechanism ofsulfide minerals of copper, antimony and arsenic using tannin-containing modifiers during processing of multimetalgold-bearing ores. During the research it was established that for the selective separation of antimony and arsenicsulfide minerals into concentrates of different kinds, it is possible to use vegetable reagents capable to be selectivelyadsorbed on the arsenopyrite surface. Using the laser KEYENCE VK-9700 and electronic LEO-1420 VP INCA-350microscopy methods, it has been established that the film of a vegetable modifier was not washed off with water andfixed firmly enough on the surface of the polished sections of arsenopyrite. In the X-ray spectrum there are C and Obands related to the reagent structure. The vegetative reagent is fixed both on the pre-adsorbed phase of the collectorand on the areas free from the collector. On the polished sections of antimonite before and after a contact with thetannin solution, only partial adsorbed tannin phases are detected, which disappear as a result of subsequent washingwith water.The reported study was funded by RFBR according to the research project ? 16-05-00646 ?."

"Mineral processing unit models require information on particulate properties such as particle size, solids flowrate and mineralogical composition to model their operations. Process models that describe the separation process can be classified based on the level of information required from the ore, i.e. the feed stream to the separating unit. The most comprehensive level of mineral processing models is the particle-based modelling approach. Particle based modelling describes a modelling approach where mineral composition, mineral liberation and textural information of particles making up the process streams is used in modelling. The advantage of this approach is that all model streams carry particle level information (size, liberation, shape). This information is obtained by applying automated mineralogy techniques such as Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by Scanning Electron Microscopy (QEMSCAN) analysis which provide accurate and detailed information on process stream particle properties. Currently the use of liberation information in modelling and simulation is rare, due to the limited number of separation models that liberation data as input. The objective of this study is to develop a particle based model for a dry magnetic separator, where mineralogical information is used directly to simulate a dry magnetic separator operation. Magnetic separation tests were carried out on high, medium and low grade magnetite ores using a laboratory magnetic separator. Streams from the separator were sampled and sized for chemical and liberation analyses. A sized mass and elemental balance around the magnetic separator was carried out. The elemental assays of each stream were converted to mineral quantities and a sized mineral balance was done. QEMSCAN measured liberation data was reconciled to the mineral balance based on mineral quantities obtained from chemical assays. This was followed by the development of a particle based model that calculates the trajectory of a single particle based on its mineral composition and textural properties. The model was tested on experimental data and was able to predict the effect of variation in process feed stream mineralogical attributes (liberation, grade, particle size) on magnetic separation performance. Results of this study highlight the benefits of the particle based modelling approach. INTRODUCTION The extraction of mineral values from ore requires liberation of the value minerals from the gangue followed by their separation. Liberation is achieved by size reduction operations (Desmond, 2008; Fuerstenau and Abouzeid, 2002). Separation of gangue material from value mineral takes place in various mineral upgrading stages such as classification, magnetic separation and flotation. In these concentration stages value minerals are separated from gangue minerals based on the physical properties of the ore particles making up the feed such as size, liberation, volume of magnetic material and density. The success of separation is related to the liberation of the feed particles, the performance of the separation technology applied, as well as the inherent characteristics of the feed material (Leißner et al., 2013)."

Calcined calcium oxide from limestone is hydrated to manufacture calcium hydroxide, and then precipitated calcium carbonate is synthesized from calcium hydroxide. Precipitated calcium carbonate of various morphologies is obtained by controlled conditions of each step and characteristics of limestone, calcium oxide and calcium hydroxide. Especially characteristics of calcium hydroxide have the most influence on morphology of precipitated calcium carbonate character. In this study, therefore, it is investigated the specific surface area of calcium hydroxide and morphology of precipitated calcium carbonate according to hydration temperature. Calcium hydroxide hydrated at high initial temperature has larger particle size than that hydrated at low initial temperature. And formation yield of aragonite precipitated calcium carbonate has improved by using calcium hydroxide had larger particle size (hydrated at high initial temperature).
