This paper outlines the position and capabilities of Western Canada's bituminous coal industry, and indicates the increasing importance of Japan as an export market. The use of coal in Japan is reviewed, especially as regards future trends, and an appraisal is made of Canadian coal in comparison with domestic Japanese coal and imports from other countries. The importance of maintaining a solid nucleous within the Canadian bituminous coal industry is emphasized. I N RECENT years, Japan has emerged as a valuable market for Canadian exports. The first major product exported in volume to Japan was wheat, which has become very successfully established in Japanese markets. Following this, iron ore gradually found a market in Japan, with exports usually based on long-term contracts. "The Pine Point area is on the south shore of Great Slave Lake, 510 air miles north of Edmonton and J JO miles south of Yellowknife, N.W.T. The occurrence there of lead and zinc was reported in J 899 by R. Bell (5) of the Geological Survey of Canada, and in the following years several claims were staked and some prospecting was done. In 1928 Atlas Exploration Co. took over the property containing the discovery occurrences. In 1929 The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Ltd. (""Cominco"") and Ventures Ltd. participated with Atlas in forming the Northern Lead-Zinc Co., which, under the direction of J. M. Bell, carried out 24,499 feet of drilling in the discovery and surrounding areas. Two shafts and many surface pits were also sunk. This work showed that the discovery deposits contain about 500,000 tons of lead-zinc ore, but no new orebody was found.In 1936 D. F. Kidd (11) drew attention to the highly significant space relations between the base-metal discoveries at Pine Point and the projections of certain major Precambrian faults mapped earlier by C. H. Stockwell. Geological work by Cominco in 1940 and subsequent years suggested the presence of mineable deposits within a belt of land including part of the area of earlier field work and extending far beyond it. Between 1946 and 1954 exploration financed by Cominco and Ventures Ltd. included 182,950 feet of diamond drilling, 383 feet of sinking, and 240 feet of drifting, raising, and crosscutting. This work was successful in finding substantial quantities of new ore in places where bedrock is completely concealed.The topography is one of low relief, characterized in many places by swampy muskeg and shallow, marl-bottomed ponds. The area where ore has been found is generally higher ground which, though not well drained, is comparatively dry. It is also marked by raised beaches and a few sand dunes overgrown by small spruce and pine. Bedrock is generally overlain by a variable thickness of hard, glacial boulder clay. This in turn is covered by silt, sand, and gravel, probably deposited from the waters of Great Slave Lake, which formerly extended many miles beyond its present southern shore."

In this study, the effect of silicon on the microstructure, mechanical properties and hot tearing susceptibility of permanent mould cast AZ91E magnesium alloy was investigated. Varying amounts of silicon (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt.%) were added to AZ91E in the form of an Al-53 wt.% Si master alloy. The phase formation, grain size and solidification behavior of each alloy were characterized and related to their tensile properties and hot tearing susceptibility. The results showed that the addition of silicon resulted in the formation of Mg2Si particles. The presence of these particles led to an increase of the hardness, but was detrimental to the tensile strength and elongation of AZ91E. However, silicon significantly reduced the hot tearing susceptibility of AZ91E. This was attributed to the reduction of the grain size and the decreased freezing range of AZ91E, which contributed to improve the interdendritic feeding during the last stage of solidification.

"Efficiency and penetration rate during percussive rock drilling significantly affect the speed of tunneling and excavation. Many researchers and engineers have continuously engaged in the advancement of rock drilling performance. Development and modification of the rock drills based on test data are timeconsuming and costly. Hence it is essential to make effective use of numerical simulation. However, most of the numerical models proposed in previous studies were too simple in comparison with the actual percussive rock drilling in which many factors are involved. The objective of our research project is to construct a new realistic numerical model of continuous percussive drilling, which is based on the previous Okubo-Nishimatsu’s model. In this study, the parts of the previous model involved in stress wave propagation and attenuation were modified. The two models were prepared for HD712 hydraulic rock drill mounted on crawler drills and HD210 hydraulic rock drill mounted on drilling jumbos. Stress wave propagation was computed with the discretized one-dimensional wave equation. The calculated results were compared to the stress waves measured on a rod during percussive drilling. In both models for HD712 and HD210, the measured stress waves can be reproduced with the one-dimensional model of the same acoustic impedance as the actual piston, shank rod and rod combined with the CI+spring model as a rod joint. The calculated results indicate that the spring constant in the model of a rod joint needs to be set appropriately depending on drilling conditions. The piston in the drill body is reciprocated by hydraulic pressure and collides with the shank rod a few thousand times per minute. Stress waves generated by the collision propagate and attenuate in the rods and rod joints, and then reach the bit. The bit penetrates and crushes rock. During percussive drilling, the components mutually affect each other and self-induced oscillation occurs. The number of blows and the rate of penetration are determined by the practical drilling conditions such as hydraulic pressure, thrust force, number of rods and mechanical properties of rock. Development and modification of the rock drills based on test data are time-consuming and costly. Hence it is essential to make effective use of numerical simulation. However, most of the numerical models proposed in previous studies were too simple in comparison with the actual percussive rock drilling in which many factors are involved."

THE Eustis concentrator is located about nine miles southwest of Sherbrooke, on the main line of the Quebec Central railway. The concentrator is served by a side track parallel to the main line, and all supplies for both the mine and mill are delivered at the mill yards. The concentrator treats 250 tons of copper-iron ore daily by preferential flotation, whereby, first, the copper sulphides are floated and the iron pyrite is depressed, and, second, the iron pyrite is reactivated and floated, resulting in an iron pyrite concentrate and tailing, the latter going to waste. During 1934, 71,709 tons of ore were treated, averaging 3.712 per cent copper and 32.1 percent iron, with a small amount of silver and a trace of gold. The recovery was 93.77 percent of the copper, and 70.43 percent of the iron as iron concentrate. The copper concentrate produced averaged 25.623 percent copper and the iron-pyrite concentrate averaged 42.13 percent iron and 49.173 percent sulphur. HISTORY The first mill at the Eustis mine was built in 1904 (1). For a few years previous to this rime, some jigs had been operated to concentrate the fines from the mine, the coarse ore being hand-sorted. Both the fines and sorted lump ore were shipped to acid plants. The building of the mill was based on test work carried out by Professor Robert H. Richards at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The method of concentration consisted in careful classification in a Richards classifier, which made six different sized products. These products went to Wilfley tables, where a concentrate, middling, and tailing were made. The middling was returned to the rolls. Crushing was done by a jaw crusher and two sets of rolls, resulting in a screen size of about five-mesh.

"The Bushveld Complex is a large layered igneous intrusion, located in the northern parts of the Republic of South Africa. The complex hosts the largest known reserves of Platinum Group Metals in the world. On the western limb of the complex, mining of the Merensky economic horizon and UG2 chromitite layer has been conducted for many years by several mining companies, including Impala Platinum Limited. Over the past decade, Impala has planned a new generation of greenfield vertical shafts, commencing with comprehensive geological and geotechnical studies. As part of the geotechnical studies, numerous tests have been conducted to quantify the mechanical properties of the various near-reef rock types. These tests include point load tests conducted in the field, as well as uni-axial compressive strength, triaxial compressive strength, and Brazilian disc tensile strength tests conducted in specialist laboratories. The authors have compiled an extensive database containing a large number of tests for different rock types, ranging from felsic Anorthosite to mafic Pegmatoid. The database was analysed to quantify the mechanical properties and values for Mohr Coulomb and Hoek Brown failure criteria for each rock type typically exposed by mining. The paper will provide a data set of rock mechanical properties typically used in numerical modelling and other design processes. Using the significant number of tests available, data describing the variability of the various parameters will be included."

"This paper describes the development of a milling circuit for the complex Midwest orebody, containing a high-arsenic uranium ore typical of that found in northern Saskatchewan. The results of preliminary bench-scale test work are summarized. Data from a pilot-plant program carried out at the Ontario Research Foundation are provided for the selected mill flowsheet. Also described are waste circuits which have been established to produce effluents of acceptable quality. Pilot-plant testing of sub-aerial tailings deposition is also described. The applicability of manufacturers' equipment for the various circuits in the flowsheet is discussed.IntroductionThe Midwest uranium deposit is in northern Saskatchewan, 700 km north of Saskatoon, near the eastern edge of the Athabasca BasinDevelopment work on the project is directed by Canada Wide Mines Ltd., a subsidiary of Esso Resources Canada Limited. Participants in the project are Esso Resources Canada Limited, Numac Oil and Gas Ltd., Bow Valley Industries Ltd ., Mink Mining Corporation and Midwest Mining Corporation.The deposit consists of a series of flat lenses of massive ore overlain by a halo of lower-grade sandstone ore. The massive ore is formed of pitchblende and nickel arsenides, along with clay, and averages about 10% U and 9% Ni, The principal minerals are pitchblende (UO2-UO3), coffinite (U(SiO4)1-x(OH)4x), gersdorffite (NiAsS), niccolite (NiAs) and rammelsbergite (NiAs2). The sandstone ore, a friable clay-rich sandstone with sooty pitchblende, averages about 0.4% U and 0.6% Ni. Typical expected mill feed analyses are given in Table I.A bench-scale development program ore was carried out during the period from August 1978 to May 1981 in the laboratories of Lakefield Research of Canada Ltd. (Lakefield), (Lakefield, Ontario), the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute (CSMRI), (Golden, Colorado) and, to a lesser extent, the Ontario Research Foundation (ORF), (Mississauga, Ontario) and the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC), (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan). It concludes with a selected bibliography.Surveys Utilizing Leakage HalosLeakage halos can be used as scalar or vector quantities in thesearch for deeply buried blind mineral deposits. In the first case, the occurrence of a leakage halo (e.g. a small pitchblende seam) may simply indicate the possible presence of pitchblende mineralization or orebodies; in the second case, the areal or three-dimensional distribution of leakage halos may, by their increasing frequency and I or increasing metallic or gangue element content, provide a means of vectoring in on loci of mineralization and orebodies. Examples of both cases are given in the following text.Leakage halos are of many types, as shown in Figure 2 (Part 1), and are best discussed with respect to their associated mineral deposits. Furthermore, it should be noted that leakage halos are frequently offshoots or extensions of enveloping halos. Where this occurs, careful tracing of the leakage halo(s) downward or upward respectively will often lead to the apex or nadir (bottom) of the enveloping halo(s) and ultimately to mineralization or ore."

"As one of the most typical additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, selective laser melting (SLM) removes many of the shape restrictions that limit materials design, thereby allowing computationally optimised and high performance structures to be directly produced and tested. Due to the high reflectivity and lower absorptivity of Al alloy A357 powder during high temperature laser melting, one of the issues SLM might bring is the surface roughness and defects present on the parts. In this regard, this study investigates the surface roughness – fatigue property relationship for a heat-treated aluminium alloy A357 after SLM. Via the adjustment of SLM parameters, an ultrafine microstructure can be obtained due to the fast solidification rate. Therefore, comparable or even better mechanical properties can be achieved with respect to traditional A357 casting counterparts. Meanwhile, the surface roughness conditions of the SLMed Al alloy are also influenced by various processing parameters, raw powder properties, and sample building methods. For selective laser melted Al alloy A357 specimens, a dense part with a smoother surface would be expected to correspond with a good fatigue performance.INTRODUCTION Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, is a process in which a complex part is fabricated layer by layer from a digital design package (Martin et al., 2017). AM has the potential to conserve raw materials, reduce the energy consumption, part cost, and fabrication time. Furthermore, as a typical additive manufacturing (AM) process, selective laser melting (SLM) was originally developed from selective laser sintering (SLS) based on higher quality lasers (Rao, Zhang, Fang, Chen, Wu, & Davies, 2017b). Different from conventional casting consuming valuable time and energy, SLM is now used as a cost effective method for the manufacturing of metals, such as Al-Si alloys, to produce almost full density parts using fine metallic powder and high power laser beam (Tang & Pistorius, 2017)."

"Using batch flotation experiment, contact angle measurement, particle size analysis, and scanning electron microscope (SEM), the influence and difference of pH value on the flotation rate of talc and chalcopyrite were investigate without collector at the pH range of 3~11. The results showed that, the flotation rate of talc decrease with the increasing of flotation time, while that of chalcopyrite hardly affect by flotation time, besides, the flotation rate of chalcopyrite is much less than that of talc, so the laws of flotation rate of the two minerals are independent of pH value. The flotation test data of two minerals are simulated with first order and multi-rate flotation kinetic model respectively. The simulation results showed that flotation of talc only meet the first order kinetic model, while chalcopyrite’s meet the both. In addition, According to test results of talc and chalcopyrite by the particle size distribution, SEM photographs and the contact angle measurement, the reason why talc did not conform to the first order kinetic model is not because of particle size distribution, but of particle shape. That is to say, because of sheet structure of talc, the contact angle of layers and sections are 74°and 52°respectively. At the same time, the contact angle of layers and sections are different between the particles. So flotation rates between talc particles are difference.INTRODUCTIONPossessing superior self-induced, collector-induced and sulfur-induced floatability, chalcopyrite exhibits good floatability at a wide range of pH values and potentials. Serpentine are regarded as the most difficult selected type in various chalcopyrite ore, and the predominant reason is that it contains talc. Talc, as a nonpolar layered silicate mineral, is one kind of common associated mineral in sulfide ores (Lu, 2010). Concentrate quality and flotation process of chalcopyrite are influenced as a result from the presence of talc. It is because that talc has inherent floatability which makes it readily mixed with the floated mineral and talc is easy to slime causing the slime coating of the valuable mineral (Beattie et al., 2006). Thus in order to improve the flotation effect of chalcopyrite, methods can be introduced from two respects. One method is that fast-floating talc mineral is floated preferentially, and the other is that sulfide mineral is floated prior to talc by depressing the flotation of talc mineral (Beattie et al., 2006), nevertheless, no matter with which the flotation effect of fine-sized chalcopyrite is not positive. Therefore, in order to realize the flotation separation of talc and chalcopyrite, the difference between the inherent floatability of fine-sized chalcopyrite and talc is researched and analyzed in terms of flotation dynamics in the absence of collector and frother."

Dissemination of selenium and tellurium in sulphide minerals results in the contamination of pregnant leach solutions and electrolytes in the hydrometallurgical treatment of sulphide ores and residues. The selenium and tellurium content of the copper sulphate-sulfuric acid solution may be reduced into insoluble precipitates of copper selenides and tellurides using cuprous ion. This study presents the use of the thermodynamics and kinetics for the removal process of selenium and tellurium in real life application. Dominant species of selenium and tellurium in acidic copper sulfate solutions were identified and the reduction rates of species were compared. The findings were applied to industrial conditions by modeling the Vale’s CRED (Sudbury, Canada) plant’s selenium and tellurium purification circuit. Rate reducing factors on selenium and tellurium removal were identified and discussed.

"Observations are reported on the pressure leaching of material produced by subjecting chalcopyrite to two types of heat treatment. Calcination of the mineral at 825°C, in the absence of oxygen, induces some sulphur loss by volatization, producing a material from which copper can be leached more rapidly than from chalcopyrite. Treatment of the mineral with elemental sulphur at 475°C leads to sulphur uptake accompanied by a change in mineralogical structure of the chalcopyrite. Copper is prefer-entially and rapidly leached from the sulphur-treated material. A tentative explanation of the sulphur-chalcopyrite re-action is presented."

Introduction O WING to the mineral discoveries which have recently been made in the Great Bear Lake region and the possibility of the need for fuel for transportation and development, it seems.timely ro review available information regarding the oil prospects in the vicinity of Great Slave lake and Mackenzie river, where a vast area is underlain by Palreozoic and younger sediments that undoubtedly are petroliferous. Exploratory surveys were carried out in this area by the Geological Survey and others in the latter part of the 19th century, but it was not until 1920, when drilling for oil actually began, that any serious attention was paid to the oil prospects. This is readily accounted for by the remoteness of the region, the lack of quick transportation facilities, and the shore summer season. Numerous and copious oil seepages had been reported, however, from widely separated localities, and interest was stimulated by the knowledge that these occurred in Devonian strata which had given a remarkable record of sustained production of high-grade oil in the oil-fields of southwestern Ontario. . Accordingly, during the four years 1920 to 1923, inclusive, several parties sent out by the Geological Survey made as thorough an investigation of various parts of the area as seemed warranted at that time, and from these surveys most of our information regarding the details of the stratigraphy is derived. In such a large area, it is inevitable that the lithology and thickness of rocks of the same age would show wide variations, and hence it should be recognized that conditions as regards oil prospects in the vicinity of the west end of Great Slave lake are quite distinct from those that occur near Fort Norman, 400 miles farther to the northwest, and these again are in all probability quite different from those in the less well known Arctic Red River area, 250 to 300 miles still farther north.

"An initial test of this unique application demonstrated that hot gunned refractory would adhere satisfactorily. Subsequently, it was found that the proportion of material sticking during application increased with increased vessel temperature and when a mix containing pitch was used. About 75 per cent of the latter type adhered when it was applied at 1600°C.TBRC availability increased from an historical average of 62.5 per cent to 64.7 per cent during four campaigns when hot gunning was routinely practiced. Refractory cost was about 20 per cent less than that anticipated without gunning. Average parameters per campaign with gunning ranged as follows: 90 to 108 heats, 10 to 37 applications and 1.4 to 2. 7 hours per application. Prior to gunning, the average number of heats per campaign was 73.IntroductionThe Top Blown Rotary Converter process at Inco's Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery converts copper-nickel-sulphur concentrates to a material suitable for carbonyl refining (1),(2).Operating conditions are particularly hard on refractory. Batch cycles finish at temperatures up to 1650°C, with occasional excursions over 1700°C. New heats are then usually initiated immediately and the refractory is subjected to intense thermal shock from the cold feed. Temperature cycles are also introduced three to four times during a heat when the process is interrupted for scrap charging, temperature measurement or sampling.Abrasion wear results from rotation of the converters at speeds up to 15 RPM and from agitation of the bath with supersonic-velocity oxygen. Mechanical damage also occurs when chunks of scrap or solid matte are processed. Chemical corrosion is also present, as we know from our own laboratory work(2) and reports of operations elsewhere. As a consequence, refractory material and installation form a very large proportion of the converter plant costs. Equally important is the loss of converter availability during rebricking; this significantly reduces plant capacity."

It had not complied with some of the basic safety measures ordered. One of those measures was to complete the escape way ladder.

Due to the high specific strength and excellent corrosion resistance, Ti-6A1-4V has been widely applied in aerospace industries. In this study, the welding performance of 3.2-mm and 5.1-mm thick Ti¬6A1-4V sheets was studied using a 4 kW continuous wave Nd: YAG laser. It is found that the use of filler wire, matching the parent metal composition, can bridge the joint gap and produce full penetrated welds up to a width of 0.6 mm without cracking. The laser welds were characterized in terms of the bead geometry, defects, microstructures, and hardness. With increasing joint gap, the percent porosity area increased, reaching just over 1% of the fusion zone area at a gap width of 0.6 mm for the 3.2 mm and 5.1 mm thick sheets. The maximum underfill depth in the Ti-6A1-4V laser welds was about 5% or 7% of the sheet thickness for the 3.2-mm and 5.2-mm thick materials, respectively, meeting the AWS D17-1 specification. The microindentation hardness was maximum in the fusion zone and sharply decreased through the heat affected zone until reaching the base metal value.

The EarthProbe DCIP system deploys tightly spaced electrodes connected to a centralized data acquisition system that enables arbitrary selection of current and potential electrodes through relays. Rapid data collection (approximately 1000 readings per hour) and advanced signal processing allow for efficient use of conventional and novel arrays and the removal of natural and cultural noise. What is unique about the system is its electrode and borehole cable design, which allows seamless integration of borehole and surface measurements. EarthProbe operates in four configurations - surface, borehole, borehole-to-borehole, and surface-to-borehole (a variant of the borehole-to-borehole configuration).

"On the basis of analyzing current design and applications, the structure form, working loads and design principles of shaft sinking headframe are summarized in this paper. To overcome the insufficient bearing capacity and geometry size of the finalized shaft sinking headframe in China, a series of new large shaft sinking headframe were developed under vertical shaft construction conditions of maximum net diameter of 12.0 m and maximum depth of 1200 m. The new series shaft sinking headframe include two sets (with single sheave platform and double sheave platform), three dimensions (optimum shaft diameter <8.0 m, 8.0-10.0 m, and 10.0-12.0 m, respectively) for each set, and has innovation and optimization on structure of the sheave wheel platform (MU type) and bracing frame (REN and ZHONG type). The largest new shaft sinking headframe can arrange up to 4 hoisting equipment simultaneously and has bearing capacity more than 10000 kN. Two of the new shaft sinking headframe were successfully applied in practical engineering, such as the Hulusu auxiliary shaft, the Dahaize 1# auxiliary shaftand Sishanling auxiliary shaft. These applications showed that the new shaft sinking headframe has sufficient bearing capacity and reliable applicability. The new shaft sinking headframe could provide an effective guarantee for safety and efficiency sinking of deep-large shaft in the future.INTRODUCTIONShaft sinking headframe is one of the basic shaft sinking structures and it is mainly for hanging hoisting containers and sinking facilities in sinking a vertical shaft (Yu & Shi, 1991; Wang, Jing, & Liu, 2007). Currently, 7 types of steel pipe sinking headframe are used in China, which are mainly finalized by the Ministry of Coal Industry of China (Wang, 1988). As shown in Table 1, V-type is the largest of them and it is only suitable for sinking shaft of diameter less than 8 m and depth less than 1 000 m(Yang, 1982). However, with the increase of mining depth and scale of mineral resources in China, the diameter and depth of newly built vertical shaft are increasing continuously (Xie, Zhou, Xue, Wang, Zhang, & Gao, 2012; Qi & Pu, 2013). At present, the maximum net diameter of vertical shaft is close to 12 m, and the maximum depth is more than 1600 m (Yang & Chen, 2015; Xu, Yang, Liu, & Qin, 2015). The shaft sinking headframe has become the main restrictive factor for the development of sinking equipment, such as the height of muck discharging platform cannot meet the usage requirement of hydraulic umbrella driller, the size of sheave wheel platform is difficult to arrange the increasing hoisting and suspension equipment, the bearing capacity is insufficient to meet the needs of multiple hoisting loads in sinking a deep-large shaft, etc. Therefore, development of new shaft sinking headframe for deep-large shaft (>1000 m in depth and 8~12 m in diameter) is urgently required for China and also the whole world."

This study focuses on the flow characteristics of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys in thin sections. The pattern assembly consisted of spiral horizontal patterns, 6.25 mm (0.25 inch) and 12.50 mm (0.50 inch) in thickness with a common sprue. Al-Si alloys with silicon levels of 14%, 18% and 22% were poured with superheats of 60°C, 115°C and 170°C. It was observed that metal fluidity (in terms of flow length and metal velocity) increased with increase in silicon levels and superheat for both section thicknesses. It was also observed that, for a section thickness of 6.25 mm (0.25 inch), silicon level had more pronounced effect on the metal fluidity. For 12.50 mm (0.50 inch) thickness, both silicon level and superheat affected the metal fluidity. The surface hardness of the castings increased with an increase in silicon level of the alloys at the gate and the flow tip. Detailed study of the flow tip was also carried out with a view to understanding the effect of silicon level and superheat on undulated flow length, surface hardness and microstructure.
