Canadian nickel-copper ore deposits have been a major source of nickel, copper, cobalt and precious metals for more than 100 years. The two main minerals of interest, pentlandite (Pn, (Ni,Fe)9S8) and chalcopyrite (Cp, CuFeS2), are usually accompanied by large quantities of pyrrhotite (Po, Fe1-xS). Until the 1950s, Po containing small amounts of nickel was routinely smelted as part of the valuable Ni concentrate. The rapid growth in Ni demand following the Second World War created impetus to treat the Po separately. This action would liberate a valuable smelting capacity for higher value Pn, allow for recovery of Ni locked in Po, convert the Fe to iron oxide or metallic iron pellets, and recover S as sulphuric acid or elemental sulphur. The roasting process also has the potential to produce energy due to the highly exothermic oxidation of Po. The Ni industry would then have a “waste-free” process. Both Inco (now Vale) and Falconbridge (now Glencore) developed processes and built large industrial plants for this purpose that operated with some success. But technical issues and tenuous economics were continual challenges. By the early 1980s these industrial operations were closed. Sophisticated froth flotation methods of rejecting Po were developed, and Po containing up to 1% Ni became a waste material reporting to the tailings stream. As part of a major study on possible processing methods of Po for both value recovery and waste remediation, this paper presents a historical perspective on Canadian Po tailings with regards to their generation, inventory, value, and attempts to process them.

CANADIANS are world leaders in marketing metal and mineral products. Noranda Sales Corporation Ltd. is an international metal and mineral product marketing company operating from Toronto and London, England, where it operates a wholly owned sales subsidiary and is a 50% partner in Rudolf Wolff and Company Ltd., a charter member and the largest metal broker on the London Metal Exchange. Noranda Sales employs 97 people, of whom 52 are university trained and professionally competent in international resource product marketing. We market for 19 companies or divisions in the Noranda Group and 39 companies for whom we act as agent, consultant and purchaser of resource production. Our business in 1976 was 1.5 billion dollars carried out in 45 countries and covering 24 products and materials. Today, ownership of most of the mining industry in Canada has transferred back to Canadians, and this is said with the knowledge that a significant part of the Canadian industry has been Canadian owned and managed from its very early days. Noranda Mines Limited is such an example. It was born in 1922 as the result of a copper-gold showing at Noranda, Quebec, discovered by Ed Horne, a prospector, financed with a grubstake by a syndicate mainly composed of New York businessmen. Shortly after the discovery, when the shares of the company had risen, the syndicate was sold to Canadian interests and, since that time, Noranda has been dominantly Canadian owned and certainly Canadian managed. Today, over 90% of Noranda's shareholders are Canadian, who hold an equivalent percentage of the stock.

The conditions for rockburst occurrence are traditionally identified as: high stress, high extraction ratio, strong brittle rocks, folding, faulting, and unfavourable excavation geometry. Based on a critical review of case histories, this paper identifies oblique loading of orebodies by the major far field principal stress as a cause of rockbursts. Orebodies subjected to this loading condition are termed orebodies in shear. Orebodies in shear are subjected to compressive and shear loads. The case histories presented unambiguously show that the magnitudes of the far field principal stress alone, and a knowledge of the conventional rockburst causing factors are not sufficient for mine planning and design. The orientation of the major far field principal stress, or for that matter the driving stress relative to the orebody axis, should be recognised as one of the causes of rockbursts. It is suggested that since stress orientation is an important factor, and orientations from stress measurements are so variable, orientations from stress measurement data be complemented with underground observations from borehole and excavation breakouts to determine the actual in situ stress orientation, whenever possible. Also stress modelling for the design of critical elements (pillars) should include a sensitivity analysis on the relative critical field stress direction. If the metals sector is to contribute successfully to sustainable consumption we must adopt principles and practices which address the entire life cycle of the materials we produce. Progress must be founded on a sense of shared responsibility for the resources we utilize and the materials we create - it is this integrated approach which lies at the heart of materials stewardship. Materials stewardship means mining and metals companies producing materials in a responsible manner and then working with others, beyond their site, to ensure that the downstream material flows and applications are managed properly to create maximum societal value. In September 2006 ICMM published 'Maximizing Value: Guidance on implementing materials stewardship in the minerals and metals value chain'. This document takes a practical view presenting structured guidance as well as good practice case studies. In the publication, materials stewardship is described in terms of the range of activities that can be undertaken to ensure that all parties work collectively toward the responsible use of metal and mineral resources. This paper introduces the materials stewardship concept as set out in `Maximizing Value' and describes the business case for implementation as well as the ICMM framework for promoting materials stewardship.

"The following is a review of the advance of raise boring and its current position. The viewpoint presented is that the mining industry, through its worldwide acceptance of raise boring, has acknowledged the success of the method in general. Acceptance, however, does not imply complete satisfaction with either the equipment or current operating costs. Therefore, a brief review of how boring costs are being r educed is presented, citing examples. Recent raise borer applications of special interest are presented to show adaptability of current equipment, and some special projects in the planning stage are highlighted."

Golder Associates provided overall radiological direction and assistance to the client in their interactions with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and operational radiation protection services for the remediation of a calciner that had been used to process uranium. The project was somewhat unusual in that the radioactivity from within the calciner room was removed from the site and the cleaned steel recycled. The presence of yellowcake within the process equipment required stringent radiation protection measures. This project was completed successfully with minimal radiation exposures to the workers and the effective protection of the environment.

DOME MINES, Limited, is a gold producer situated in the Porcupine area of Ontario, 500 miles north of Toronto. During the year 1960, '71 4,600 tons of ore were milled, yielding gold bullion valued at $6,025,370. Prior to conversion to natural gas, an average of 3,200 tons of coal was consumed annually, one third of which was obtained from Canadian sources with the remainder coming from the United States. Due to the distances involved, the freight charges increased the pithead cost by as much as ISO per cent. Steam is generated at a central boiler plant and used for timber treatment, plant heating and process steam. Until August, 1960, steam was supplied during the winter months by two water tube coal-fired boilers, each rated at 200 boiler horsepower at 100 per cent output. "Most geologists and mining engineers, in the course of their professional careers, frequently become involved with the appraisal of metalliferous mineral deposits and develop a familiarity with and standard approach to the evaluation of these deposits. When the same individuals approach the industrial mineral field, however, their usual approach pattern can be rudely disturbed.This paper highlights the difference in appraisal approach and outlines the factors common to both but which have entirely different emphasis. These comprise geological appraisal, analytical requirements, the importance of transportation, marketing requirements and standards, including appropriate allowances for product development, and marketing penetration.Out of these ""different"" considerations, however, a pat-tern or standard approach emerges which is as common to the industrial mineral field as that used either consciously or subconsciously in the metallic field.The paper reviews the different factors and points of emphasis and offers an outline of the common pattern of appraisal for industrial minerals."

"Pillars left to ensure the stability of major underground coal mine infrastructure (shafts, drifts) often contain substantial quantities of coal. Recovery of this coal is an efficient use of the resource, but often presents safety hazards; pillar extraction destabilizes the protected structure, and can make its use dangerous. In this study, the stability of an active shaft at an underground coal mine situated in the Soma- Manisa region of Turkey was investigated during the recovery of the coal in the shaft safety pillar.A proprietary three-dimensional finite element analysis model (ANSYS) was used. An elastic-plastic material model utilizing the Drucker-Prager failure criterion was employed. The three-dimensional Drucker-Prager formulation was preferred over the two-dimensional Mohr-Coulomb model because it was thought to more accurately represent the strain hardening behaviour shown by most geologic materials.Stresses and deformations formed around the shaft support were estimated using the model and the results were verified by in situ observations. The results show that stress distributions around the shaft and the subsidence of the shaft support are influenced by the location location of the extraction front and the break angle of the overlying material."

PROGRESSIVE industrial organizations have recognized the importance of maintaining an adequate reference library of volumes covering all phases of their particular branch of industry, but it has been the experience of the writer that few engineers know how to use to the best advantage this store of extremely -valuable information which has been accumulated for their service. Nor does the average engineer appreciate the fact that it is only through the current technical literature that he can keep abreast of the rapidly developing fields of engineering. The present-day ramifications of the engineering field are of such wide scope that the human mind is not capable of storing away more than a small fraction of the information available on any particular topie; yet, from time ? to time, such information would prove invaluable. An engineer can know intimately only a small part of his own branch of engineering; but he cannot afford to neglect to take the fullest possible advantage of all that is already known in his own particular field. Technical information may be obtained by one or more of the following methods: (1) by enquiring of the individual who knows; (2) by performing the experimental investigations necessary to ascertain the facts; (3) by consulting the technical literature, where a record may be found of the work of others. This last method is the one we wish to examine. Our main consideration is the question of how to use the library, but first it is necessary to give some attention to the kind of enquiries one takes to the library, and to the nature of the sources of information available.

YOU have been kind enough to ask me to speak to you on "The War and Anglo-American Relations." A speaker always takes the liberty of putting his own interpretation on the scope of his subject. I am going to exercise that privilege, and try to look back over a generation of Anglo-American relationships and forward beyond the present war. I should like particularly to consider responsibilities as well as relationships. A more accurate caption for what I am going to say would be "Anglo-American Responsibilities.?? THE WAR WILL BE WON I am assuming that sooner or later we shall win this war. History and economics point to the same conclusion, that Germany has attempted the impossible and that the seeds of defeat are already sown. As to one ecof1:omic factor, I am already on public record as believing that Germany's oil supply is inadequate for the war she has launched. That opinion is unchanged. Aside from such tangible factors, moreover, I am convinced that the spirit of freedom is unquenchable, and that no combination of powers will be able to rout it from the British Commonwealth of Nations and the United States. Stronger even than this conviction is my faith in a God who will not suffer the defeat of man's aspiration to be master of his own soul. I am sure that all of you share that faith, and that we need not argue it. We can start with the assumption that the war will end in victory. The subject we are to consider, then, is the relationship of the English-thinking peoples during the conflict, and their joint responsibilities in the difficult days that will follow it. A CANADIAN-AMERICAN No talk on such a subject is worth listening to unless the audience knows the background and fundamental beliefs of the speaker. No human statement stands alone; behind and beside and within it are the ideals and the bias of the man who makes it. Because I am a stranger to most of you, I am constrained to talk about myself before I talk about more important matters. The review may be profitable, not because of the subject, but because it may illustrate the evolution of an attitude toward England.

The decommissioning of uranium tailings facilities often requires the design of a suitable cover system. In northern climatic environments there is a portion each year that can be considered to be ?inactive? while the remainder of the year can be considered to be ?active?. There are numerous engineering design assumptions required when analyzing both the ?active? and the ?inactive? portions of the year. Cover systems are subjected to complex boundary conditions and nonlinear unsaturated soil properties. The proposed paper describes the steps necessary for the preparation and the analysis of a multi-year climatic database for the design of a cover system in northern environments. The paper also explains how climate can be classified and how observed variations from one year to the next can be taken into consideration in cover design. The results of climatic records at two different sites are used to illustrate conditions that need to be taken into consideration when designing soil cover systems.

Frozen backfill for mining operations in permafrost must be delivered in such a state so as not to thermally impose on the host rock surrounding the filled stope. The placement process, the material strength demand, and the freezing time delay are the parameters that control the applicability of the method. A two-year research program was carried out in the field and using a laboratory-scale apparatus, designed to simulate a pour of frozen backfill, to study the mixing, thermal properties and segregation. The frozen rock and tailings must be at a below zero temperature and get fully wetted so the surfaces cause adherence of the particles to one another and enhance the solidification of the poured backfill. The results provided a recipe and a process for mix design for open stoping operations in cold regions. The testing evaluated the sensitivity of the test parameters that included the amount of water added in the mix, the temperare of water, the rockfill/tailings ratio, and the temperature of solid constituents.The paper presents the result of this environmentally friendly, innovative technology. The distribution of the materials and the mixing process are instrumental in achieving the properties required for open stoping applications.

The presence of a high iron concentration, 9.1 g/L, in the raffinate of the Sarcheshmeh copper heap bioleach process led to the formation of various types of jarosite, (K,Na,NH4,H3O)Fe3(SO4)2(OH)6, on the heap mineral surfaces. This study probes iron removal from the raffinate using a bio-oxidation process based on A. ferrooxidans bacteria in the presence and absence of jarosite seed. The jarosite seed was biologically synthesized using A. ferrooxidans bacteria. The effect of solution pH (1.5 to 2.5) and jarosite seed dosage (0 to 15 wt.%) on iron removal was examined. It was demonstrated that the concentration of iron ions present in the raffinate decreased from 9.1 g/L to 2.5 g/L with the addition of 10 wt.% jarosite seed at pH 2 and 130 rpm mixing rate at 32°C. Three different types of raffinate including (1) native raffinate containing 9.1, 3.4, 5.7 g/L of total, ferric and ferrous iron, respectively, (2) bio-oxidized raffinate in the absence of the jarosite seed containing 8.5 g/L total iron (mainly ferric with negligible ferrous), (3) bio-oxidized raffinate in the presence of jarosite seed containing 2.55 g/L total iron (mainly ferric with negligible ferrous) were used in mesophilic, moderate thermophilic and thermophilic bioleaching processes. The results of the flask tests showed that the highest copper bioleaching recoveries of 9.4, 49.4 and 90.8 % were achieved using raffinate (3) with mesophilic, moderate thermophilic and thermophilic bioleaching processes, respectively.

Several mining operations are currently evaluating the feasibility of changing their mining method to Block Caving. There will also be several deep low-grade ore bodies that will face the need to go underground in following their ore to depth. There are two main reasons why Block Caving is attractive: firstly, it offers the lowest operating costs amongst all the mining methods; and secondly, it is truly a massive mining method, offering the highest potential production capacity. Despite its longstanding popularity, there are still significant components of the method that are not clearly understood. Also, the lack of availability of key geomechanic information still presents a major obstacle to developing mine planning and production scheduling. There are several key issues in block caving that can make it feasible such as cavability, fragmentation, stresses will condition the way that a block caves and the way that material is drawn from the draw points. Consequently Block Cave mining method is a good example where the ore body has to be related to design and mine planning. The concepts of dilution, draw control as well as sequence definition are reviewed in this paper to illustrate the idea of integration. There have been some examples of mines where some of the components of mine planning have not been integrated causing a disaster in terms of economics or safety. "In order to avoid pollution of water in Flemming Brook and Little River, which drain the area in which the Brunswick No. 12 Mine and Concentrator are located, the company has gone to considerable expense in preparing tailings storage and effluent setting ponds. The attached drawing gives a plan of the six settling ponds together with elevations of the dikes and the effluent weirs.All original dikes for the six ponds were constructed from humus-free clay and rock material, which was obtained, preferentially, by excavating from within the dike area. Run-off water, precipitated on the outside slopes of the dams will drain off without contacting the tailing material. A ditch was made north of the dam site to deflect surface run-off to the east into a branch of Flemming Brook.A secondary dike, made from tailings, has recently been erected on No. 1 and No. 2 tailings pond inside and above the earth-filled dike which serves as a roadway. Run-off from the tailings dikes will be retained inside the ponds by ditching between the roadway and tailings dike into ponds 4 and 6."
