"FLEX 31 is a chemically enhanced sodium isopropyl xanthate. Developed by Charles Tennant & Co (Canada) Ltd and has shown improved collection properties over SIPX for sulphide minerals flotation. Improvement of recoveries, grades, faster kinetics, lower dosages, high pyrite and pyrrhotite rejection capabilities have all been exhibited by FLEX 31. Recent plant trial carried out in the copper circuit at one of the largest copper mine in Zambia shown over US $ 2.00 Million annual improvement on the bottom line over SIPX at current copper prices. Data produced also showed superior grade and recoveries from rougher concentrates that previously had not been attainable with other reagents effectively. Flex 31 has also shown positive outcomes with zinc, Copper/Zinc, arsenopyrite and copper/molybdenum ores.IntroductionSodium Isopropyl Xanthate (SIPX) is one of the most popular flotation chemicals on the market today. Somewhat more specific than amyl xanthate, SIPX is used in a variety of ores like copper/zinc, lead/zinc, arsenopyrite/pyrite, and many others (Melis et al., 1991). An investigation carried out by the research division of Charles Tennant & Company (Canada) Limited has produced a chemically enhanced SIPX. This product has shown all the advantages of normal SIPX along with improved recoveries of copper and copper activated minerals. The product was named “FLEX 31”."

"Maximizing the value of each tonne of processed ore is the goal for all operations. Cyanidation processing of gold-copper ores has been challenging since its first use in 1889. The current practice treats a bleed or the total flow of mill solution to recover copper as copper sulfide (by sulfidization, acidification, recycling, and thickening), or to recover the cyanide (by acidification-volatilization neutralization). The process presented uses the adsorption of copper cyanide by carbon and the selective elution of copper from carbon to concentrate copper into a smaller stream. Copper contained in the smaller stream is precipitated as copper cyanide.RÉSUMÉ Toutes les exploitations ont pour objectif commun d’optimiser la valeur de chaque tonne de minerai traité. Depuis sa première utilisation en 1889, la méthode de traitement par cyanuration des minerais aurifère et cuprifère s’est révélée complexe. La pratique actuelle traite la saignée ou le débit total d’une solution de traitement du concentrateur pour récupérer le cuivre sous la forme de sulfure de cuivre (par sulfuration, acidification, recyclage et épaississement), ou pour récupérer le cyanure (par acidification, volatilisation et neutralisation). Le procédé présenté dans cet article utilise l’adsorption sur charbon actif de la solution de cyanure de cuivre et l’élution sélective du cuivre depuis le charbon pour concentrer le cuivre en un plus petit jet. Le cuivre contenu dans ce plus petit jet est précipité sous forme de cyanure de cuivre.INTRODUCTIONProcessing gold-copper ores by cyanidation has been a cost-control challenge since the cyanidation process was first used in 1889. Copper cyanide is stable only in the cuprous state, not the cupric. This factor results in the oxidation of a mole of cyanide per mole of nonchalcocite copper extracted. Each mole of copper extracted forms a cyanide complex with a minimum of 3 mol of cyanide. This cyanide-to-copper mole ratio is required to dissolve gold. The oxidation of cyanide and copper complexation with cyanide results in high cyanide consumption for copper-gold ores, which is a significant operating cost.One challenge in processing gold-copper ore is the cost of cyanide related to the extraction of copper. Processing 10,000 t/d of ore containing 1,000 mg/kg copper and 10% copper extraction yields 1,000 kg/d of copper. Currently, processes to remove copper from cyanide leach solution treat either the total flow of the barren or a bleed of the barren. The two processes used for copper-gold ores are sulfidization, acidification, recycling, and thickening (SART), which produces a copper sulfide product for sale; and acidification- volatilization-neutralization (AVR), which recovers the cyanide from a gas and produces a low–cyanide content solution. This low–cyanide content solution can be recycled to the process or might require additional treatment before being disposed from the operation."

Net Present Value Impact of Discount Rate The Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method of valuations is universally used and accepted. The main criticism of the method is that it does not recognize the value of projects long life projects. This can be seen in the preceding graph where the present value of cash flows in later years are small for discount rates over about 10%. This graph covers a project that has a 25 year operating life. It is clear from the low height of the NPV bars at 10% and 15% in the last years of the project that an additional 25 years would add almost no value to total project NPV. As an example of this effect, an colleague undertook the evaluation of a pulp and paper project. The plant could be justified, but it was not possible to justify planting the trees as they took too long to grow and so had not appreciable NPV. The plant had to purchase wood to feed the plant.

At the last annual meeting of this Institute the programme very properly was drawn up and carried out with the special object of calling attention to the Dominion's position and problems with regard to fuel supplies. That subject, always one of serious concern, was a source of considerable anxiety twelve months ago. It is still so, but in a decidedly less degree than at that time. So far as the immediate fuel situation is concerned our anxieties have been relieved. And I think we can safely say that such a consciousness of our difficulties and determination to overcome them, has been developed in the minds of our people that there will be no slackening of the offensive until a final solution is reached. In selecting a subject of major importance for the present occasion I have felt free to digress from the pressing problems of last year and to go back, for a starting point, to the presidential address of two years ago .. I do not, however, wish to enter the controversy that has developed as a result of that address, though in spite of my own failure to amass a fortune from participation in certain mining ventures, I am decidedly inclined to the optimistic view that Dr. Corless presented of the future of our mining industry. You will perhaps have observed that in its general wording the title of my paper bears a marked resemblance to that of that address. This simila1ity of titles is not accidental. It is intentional on my part.

"This paper reviews the history of modern iron-control processes in hydrometallurgy. Attention is paid to processes developed in the electrolytic zinc industry for removal of iron from zinc sulfate leach liquors and the problems faced by the industry in the safe disposal of the iron residues produced by these processes. Past lessons learned are projected onto current efforts to develop hydrometallurgical processes for treatment of copper sulfide concentrates. It is argued that any attempt to create a “hydrometallurgical copper smelter” will fail, unless methods are developed that can recover iron in a form that can be directly used by the steel or pigment industries.RÉSUMÉ Cet article passe en revue l’histoire des procédés modernes de contrôle du fer en hydrométallurgie. Il accordera une attention particulière aux procédés développés dans l’industrie du zinc électrolytique pour l’élimination du fer dans les liqueurs lixiviantes de sulfate de zinc anhydre, ainsi qu’aux problèmes rencontrés par l’industrie en termes d’élimination sans danger des résidus ferreux générés par ces procédés. This was to take the form of a plenary lecture at the 4th Symposium on Iron Control in Hydrometallurgy, which formed part of the 28th International Mineral Processing Congress, held in Quebec City in September 2016.I was naturally flattered that the invitation was to give the lecture at an IMPC, the prestigious conference series that has been held since the 1950s. That this particular IMPC was to include the 4th Symposium on Iron Control in Hydrometallurgy, a conference series held only every 10 years, made the invitation even more appealing and appropriate. This was because I had been co-chairman of the First Symposium on Iron Control, together with my erstwhile colleague, John Dutrizac, which was held 30 years ago in Toronto."

"Traditional comminution tests are a vital component in every mine plant design. Comminution behavior governs both the cost of equipment and its operating efficiency. Most comminution tests are conducted off site on a limited number of samples, owing to the high costs and long lead times involved. Therefore a strong incentive exists to find alternative means for efficiently characterizing comminution behavior for a truly representative suite of samples. The potential for inferring comminution behavior from drill core is investigated in this paper. Our approach involves development of small scale comminution tests on the one hand, and measurement of a wide range of core attributes on the other. Our focus is the relationship between petrophysical properties and comminution behavior.Petrophysical properties of archival diamond drill core from the Ernest Henry Mine (Queensland, Australia) have been measured using a Geotek multi-sensor petrophysical core logger. We have investigated the relationship between the petrophysical properties and the corresponding small scale A*b and estimated Bond mill work index test results for 2m composites of the core. Core samples were petrophysically classified by means of cluster analysis. Comminution behaviour was then modeled for each cluster via multiple regression. The results suggest that prediction of the comminution behavior on the basis of petrophysics is viable at Ernest Henry.INTRODUCTIONMineral processing is the most important downstream operation for mining engineers and metallurgists since most mined materials are subjected to some type of comminution or beneficiation operation (SME, 1992). Comminution or size reduction is typically the first stage of processing. Size reduction steps (crushing and grinding) in any plant consume large amounts of energy, normally more than 50% of total energy (Weiss, 1985). Therefore, it is desirable to obtain laboratory results to design the size reduction equipment appropriately. One of the main factors that control the selection of hard-rock crushing equipment and the design of a crushing circuit is the mechanical character of the ore(s). Work index, density, abrasivity, compressive strength and clay content are essential parameters for ore characterisation (SME, 1992)."

Stope back caving in a mine using open stope mining interrupts the planned mining sequence and causes oversize muck and dilution with adverse economic implications. As many underground mines are mining or have plans to mine at depth, stope back caving could have significant impact on the mine sustainability. Therefore understanding the caving mechanism is important in preventing future occurrence and improving the mine economic performance. Falconbridge Ltd Kidd Mine is an underground mine using open stope method producing more than 2 million tonnes per year. Its current lowest mining level is approximately 2070m below surface and the lower portion of the orebody is being developed. In years of 2002 and 2003 the back of three stopes of approximately 1900m and 2040m below surface caved and caused substantial mining difficulties at the mine. As these caved stopes are subject to stress concentration, seismic activities and near major geological structures, the caving mechanism is much more complex than that of stopes near surface. In addition to the recorded caving history by site observations, the mine carried out cavity surveys and test drilling to define the caved profiles. The mine seismic monitoring database provided information at these stopes. Stress modeling work conducted by an external consultant provided the stress patterns at the caved stopes. Based on the field collected data and stress and seismic information, this paper presents details of the stope caving process and cavity surveyed profiles, reviews the predictability of the stability graph approach for these cases, discusses the caving mechanism and proposes preventive measures to stabilize the stope back.

A study was conducted on the seismic activities and associated rockburst events that took place at an underground Canadian metal mine over a period of five years. In the first stage, a back analysis of the microseismic database led to the identification of clusters of major events. The locations of these clusters were identified with respect to the local geology and the planned mining sequence. In the second stage, a numerical model was constructed using the finite difference code FLAC3D to simulate the in-situ stress, mine geometry, local geology, and stope sequence. Mining-induced stress fields were compared against two rockburst events that took place during this period, as well as against the various geologic units present. It was shown that by combining microseismic analysis and numerical modeling, it was possible to provide a basis for evaluating the influence of the in-situ stress regimes and stope sequencing on mining-induced seismic response.

AS THE LOCAL electric generating plants increased in size and capacity and costs of producing electricity came down, it became apparent that it was no longer good economy to operate individual boiler plants at the Company's various collieries to power steam hoists and compressors. Great economies could be made by burning the Coal at central power plants and using electric power at the collieries. During the period after the end of the war, a steady and continuing programme of replacing first the smaller steam-driven units, and later the steam-driven compressors, was undertaken, and finally the larger hoists, those at No. 12 Colliery in New Waterford and No. 20 Colliery in Glace Bay, were the last units operated by steam.

The rates of return on investment are examined for several major Canadian mining companies. Because we are dealing with a highly cyclical industry, subjected to widely fluctuating metal prices, rates of return are examined over a 20-year period. Conveniently, the first decade examined reflects the period when the industry enjoyed incentives to develop deposits; during the second decade, incentives were reduced and the industry became the most heavily taxed industry in Canada. The high rates of inflation since 1973 have distorted the real rates of return on investment if one considers replacement cost.

"IntroductionIN 1940, in a series of articles, M. W. von Bernewitz(l) reviewed in detail roasting of gold and silver sulphide ores and concentrates. Since that time some significant developments in roasting have taken place, and a number of papers have appeared in the Canadian technical literature, dealing severally with the roasting of a particular ore or concentrate.The purpose of this paper is not only to review some of these Canadian papers and bring the information on Canadian roasting practices to .date, but also to analyse the mechanism of roasting. Hence, it is proposed to start with a study of physico-cl1emical factors fundamental in roasting, the knowledge of which, by creating a sound basis for a proper roaster design, makes good roasting possible.Physico-Chemical FactorsRoasting can be defined as heating sulphide ores in presence of air below fusion points of the constituent minerals, at such temperatures as to convert metallic sulphides to oxides. Hence, roasting is a chemical process.The object of roasting is, by changing, chemically, mineral constituents of sulphide ores, to make the economic recovery of the desired •Constituent metal by a subsequent standard treatment possible. For instance, pyritic ores, containing gold in sub-microscopic form which no amount of grinding would release, are roasted in order, by oxidizing the sulphides, to open up their structures to such an extent as to enable cyanide solutions to come into contact with the gold and dissolve it. The production of porous calcine is, therefore, the object of roasting of refractory auriferous sulphide ores or concentrates. Such a porous calcine may be defined as a desirable calcine, and the roasts which produce desirable calcines can in their turn be termed desirable roasts."

"Vale has been actively evaluating new technologies to curtail diesel emissions. This paper discusses the selection, installation, operation, and evaluation of the MANN+HUMMEL SMF®-AR diesel particulate filter system to reduce diesel particulate matter emissions in underground mines. The system uses a sintered metal filter element, an iron fuel-borne catalyst with an onboard dosing system, an electric heater that uses onboard power, and a sensor-based control unit. More than 6,000 h of testing demonstrated that the system represents a breakthrough in the successful control of soot emission from light-duty vehicles with differing soot emission levels, exhaust temperatures, and duty cycles.RÉSUMÉ La compagnie Vale évalue activement de nouvelles technologies pour réduire les émissions de diesel. Le présent article discute du choix, de l’installation, du fonctionnement et de l’évaluation du système MANN+HUMMEL SMFMD-AR de filtrage des particules de diesel pour réduire les émissions de particules de diesel dans les mines souterraines. Le système utilise un élément filtrant en métal fritté, un catalyseur à base de fer dans le carburant avec un système de dosage intégré, un élément de chauffage électrique qui utilise l’alimentation incorporée et une unité de contrôle avec un capteur. Analytical predictions of the rate and magnitude of settlement of deposited oil sands tailings slurries generally overestimate how fast pore pressures will dissipate. Field deposits of nonsegregating tailings to mature fine tailings show continued high pore pressures near the surface which impede surface reclamation. In geotechnical analyses which predict the consolidation behavior of soft soils a finite strain theory is used. Effective stress-void ratio and void ratio-hydraulic conductivity relationships determined from laboratory large strain consolidation tests, are used in the finite strain predictions. This theory, however, cannot predict the full range of sedimentation, consolidation and pore pressure dissipation which occurs in large scale deposits of thixotropic tailings slurries. A new large strain consolidation model which assumes that the creep rate of the slurry exceeds the pore pressure dissipation rate is being investigated. This model is relevant for rapidly deposited, low permeability thixotropic slurries where the upwards drainage path increases by several meters a year, such as, in oil sand fine tailings ponds and nonsegregating tailings deposits. The model will be verified by analyzing the 10m high column of fine tailings at the University of Alberta which has been monitored for over 20 years and in which the excess pore pressures are still very high.

In 2001, at the CIM AGM in Quebec, a paper discussing poor ground conditions in a newly opened area at Agrium?s Vanscoy Potash Operation?s, suggested load transfer around old workings as a possible reason for the early room failure. High closure rates are expected in deeper regions however the rapid failure of walls immediately behind the face resulted in protective guards being mounted on and behind the borer. The high closure and early rib failure continued well past any reasonable distance to be explained by load transfer around old workings and investigations continued into possible reasons other than simply depth. Detailed investigations into the mineralogy and crystal fabric of the ore zone provided one possibility, which combined with a changed borer cutting profile are now believed to have contributed greatly to the poor conditions.

"The treatment of water is required at many mining operations to remove metals and prevent the discharge of contaminated water to the environment. In other cases, water treatment is used to provide better quality water for recycle to the processing plant, or to process bleed streams in hydrometallurgical operations in order to prevent deterioration in metallurgical performance or process equipment. BioteQ Environmental Technologies Inc. has developed and commercialized the BioSulphide® Process which can provide an alternative for these treatment needs and which can also be used for profitable metal recovery, particularly in cases where conventional metal winning techniques are not economical. The BioSulphide® Process is a high rate anaerobic biotechnology for on-site production of H2S from sulphur species, although for smaller flows and metal loadings, the use of chemical sulphide reagent might be more cost effective. Both new projects and existing commercial operations, used for removal and/or recovery of copper, nickel, and zinc, and which range in sulphide generating capacity from 50 kg/day to 3.7 tonnes/day, are discussed. Particular focus is placed on the results of operations at the Raglan Mine in Northern Quebec where dissolved nickel is removed from contaminated water at a high efficiency through the precipitation of nickel sulphide. Plant effluent is discharged directly to the receiving environment and the high-grade nickel sulphide product is combined with the nickel flotation concentrate produced at the mine. The plant at Raglan will replace the existing conventional water treatment plant and will eliminate the need for on-site storage of treatment plant sludge.INTRODUCTIONThe BioSulphide® Process, which produces low cost H2S for use in selective metal precipitation, offers a low capital cost alternative which can operate efficiently and cost-effectively within a wide range of flows and solution grades. Since the technology can be used to recover metals from solutions with low flows and metal grades, the technology is also applicable to environmental applications for water treatment, with the sale of recovered metals providing an offset to treatment costs. For environmental control, the technology has a distinct advantage in being able to meet strict effluent discharge criteria due to the very low solubility of metal sulphides. To date, BioteQ Environmental Technologies has designed and constructed three plants for metal sulphide precipitation, with another three projects in the advanced development stage."

The lignite deposit at Onakawana on the Abitibi river is of particular interest at the present time, since the Ontario Government has recently decided to proceed with the extension of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway to James bay. Forty-five miles of steel will be laid this year to the crossing of the Moose river. This will cross the lignite field. It has been known for many years that lignite occurred in the Moose River basin, but it was not until drilling was commenced at Blacksmith rapids (or Onakawana, as the camp is now known) in June, 1929, that a seam of economic thickness and extent was found. Early in 1929 the Ontario Legislature voted $25,000 for the carrying out of a drilling programme in the Moose River basin. This came as a culmination of two summers' exploratory work by the Geological Branch of the Ontario Department of Mines, and as the result of a report which said; in effect, that further information concerning the mineral resources of the basin could only be obtained by drilling, and that such a drilling programme was well worth while in order to establish once for all whether lignite, fire-clay, or oil or gas did or did not exist in economic quantities in the region.

"Mineralization at the Main zone of the Clarence Stream gold deposit in southwestern New Brunswick occurs within a parallel series of quartz veins that occupy a NE-trending, steeply north-dipping, brittle-ductile shear zone related to the nearby terrane-bounding Sawyer Brook fault. This deformation zone cuts volcaniclastic sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Silurian Waweig Formation, and is intruded by mantle-derived East Branch Brook gabbroic dikes and a number of felsic dikes. Intermittent shear-zone reactivation during local magmatic activity induced heterogeneous deformation and alteration of the country rocks and dikes. The terminal phase of shearing is associated with narrow pegmatite-aplite dikes that grade laterally into granophyric granite, and into an auriferous quartz vein. Gold, aurostibite, and gold-antimony intergrowths, predominantly with vein quartz, are associated with a low ƒO2 sulfide mineral assemblage (pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, and berthierite) that has a sulfur isotopic signature consistent with a magmatic source. Gold saturation and deposition occurred episodically between 300° and 360°C at low activity of sulfur, predominantly in response to pressure reduction during brittle failure combined with the effects of decreasing temperature and sulfidation reactions during fluid-wall-rock interaction. Geochronological studies demonstrate that the timing of the emplacement of the pegmatite-aplite dikes and associated auriferous veins overlap with that of the Early Devonian Magaguadavic granite. Moreover, the composition of the dikes is consistent with their derivation from this granite as late fractionates. The Main zone of the Clarence Stream deposit is therefore interpreted to be intrusion-related, with the Magaguadavic granite being the ultimate source of the gold-bearing fluids. La minéralisation de la zone principale du gisement aurifère de Clarence Stream dans le sud-ouest du Nouveau Brunswick occupe une série de veines de quartz parallèles dans une zone de cisaillement fragile-ductile de direction NE et à pendage abrupt vers le nord apparentée à la faille de Sawyer Brook avoisinante qui délimite deux terranes. La réactivation intermittente de la zone de cisaillement durant l’activité magmatique locale a entraîné la déformation et l’altération hétérogènes des dykes et de l’encaissant. La phase finale du cisaillement est associée à de minces dykes d’aplite-pegmatite qui passent latéralement à des granites granophyriques, puis à des veines de quartz aurifères. L’or, l’aurostibite et les intercroissances d’or et d’antimoine principalement associées aux veines de quartz sont associés à un assemblage minéral de sulfures à faible ƒO2 (pyrrhotite, arsénopyrite et berthierite) présentant une signature isotopique du souffre compatible avec une source magmatique. La saturation en or et la précipitation a eu lieu épisodiquement entre 300° et 350°C dans des conditions de faible activité de souffre, principalement en réponse à la baisse de pression durant la rupture fragile ainsi qu’aux effets de la baisse de température et aux réactions de sulfuration durant l’interaction entre le fluide et l’encaissant. Les études géochronologiques indiquent que l’âge de la mise en place des dykes de pegmatite-aplite et des veines aurifères qui leur sont associées coïncide avec le granite de Magaguadavic, d’âge Dévonien Précoce. De plus, la composition des dykes est compatible avec une origine provenant de ce granite sous la forme de phases fractionnées tardives. Le gisement principale (Main zone) de Clarence Stream est ainsi considéré comme étant associé aux intrusions, le granite de Magaguadavic étant la source ultime des fluides aurifères."
